ELEMENTARY ARC WORKING ON ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS by Brad Holden If a lack of programming is the School Board’s main concern when it comes to Duntroon Central Public School, why not focus on the quality of programming that’s possible if we look at the school being part of a “family of schools” in Clearview Township? That’s the concept that members of the Accommodation Review Committee presented to interested residents last Thursday at the ARC’s third public meeting, held at Nottawa Elementary School. It’s at the top of a list of several options the committee is working toward presenting as alternatives to the School Board planning staff’s preferred option of closing Duntroon School, when the ARC issues its final report to the Board in March. The entire list, presented by ARC member Stephanie Davenport, includes the following: 1. Close Duntroon but

send Singhampton students to Nottawa (under the staff option they would be sent to Creemore); 2. “Repatriate” the students who live in Sunnidale but are attending schools in Wasaga Beach and reshuffle Clearview attendance areas so that Duntroon has more students; 3. Close Duntroon but allow parents of former Duntroon students to choose what school their kids will now attend; 4. Close Duntroon and send all students to Nottawa (rather than the staff proposal of 40 going to Creemore and 40 going to Nottawa); 5. Close Duntroon and split the students between Creemore and Nottawa but make the closure effective June 2012, instead of this June as called for in the staff proposal; and 6. Keep Duntroon open and maintain the status quo until 2015, when the debate about future growth in Clearview Township has been settled. (See “ARC” on page 3)
SUCCESS ON SNOW In true Canadian fashion, the weather was chilly but the
atmosphere was warm as area residents gathered together at Pretty River Provincial Park last Saturday in support of Snowarama for Easter Seals. With record numbers of snowmobilers and a new cohort of snowshoers taking part, event organizers surpassed their fundraising goal of $10,000. In total, nearly $10,500 was raised at the event with Clearview Township Mayor Ken Ferguson, who organizes a “Mayor’s Snowmobile Run” each year as part of the event, still receiving pledges on Monday morning. All money raised will directly help local kids with physical disabilities.
