By Cecily Ross Sylvia Wiggins’attempt to stop wpd Canada Corporation from erecting eight wind turbines on land near her Clearview Township farm pits her and husband John against their neighbours, the Beattie Brothers, who own the land on which the proposed wind farm is to be built. “This is the first time that the lessor of the land is also being sued,” said Eric Gillespie, the Torontobased environmental lawyer retained by Wiggins. Gillespie is involved in several other claims against wind developers in the province, but he said this one is “unique.” The Wiggins suit, which was filed last week against the Beattie Brothers and wpd Corp., is seeking an injunction to halt the project and $2 million in damages, alleging among other things that the proposed project has resulted in a reduction in property values. According to the statement of claim, the Wiggins purchased the property located on Nottawasaga Concession 6 North in October 2006 as a horse farm. (See “Wiggins” page 3)
Art About Town Foran brings literary legend to Creemore Don’t miss your final chance to bid on a Peter Adams’, a Liz Eakins’ or even a small masterpiece by an as-yet unknown local artist. CreemoreCentric, a month-long extravaganza of tiny perfect paintings (and photos, sculptures and collages), draws to a close this Saturday and Sunday at the Mad and Noisy Gallery. This event, through both the sale of the canvases and the art, helps to raise funds and awareness for the cooperatively run gallery as well as allow the community to collaborate on one big wall-of-art. To end things with a bang, Purple Hills Arts and Heritage Society is hosting a party at the gallery on Saturday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm. There will be refreshments as well as a chance to out bid fellow art lovers. The party is open to PHAHS members and their guests as well as anyone else who is interested in joining the society. Then on Sunday afternoon between 2 and 3 pm, the Gallery will hold a final live auction of the over 120 original works of art. Who knows what treasures you might take home?
By Chris Greer In his efforts to chronicle the life of Mordecai Richler, author Charles Foran spent five years living with the ghost of the Canadian literary icon, visiting haunted rooms and speaking with those who once knew him. “He sustains that kind of attention,” Foran says, “because he belonged to an era when artists were self-consciously outrageous.” With the publication of Mordecai: The Life and Times in 2010, the Peterborough-based author became an object of wide critical acclaim. The Globe and Mail describes the biography as “probably the single most awarded book of any genre in the history of Canadian literature.” Among the accolades it received are the 2011 Charles Taylor Prize and the 2011 Governor Generals Award for non-fiction. On Sunday, February 19, Foran will be the special guest at a lunch hosted by Curiosity House Books at Chez Michel between noon and 3 pm. Tickets for the event are still available and cost $35. Later, Foran will be available to sign copies of his book at the bookstore. Foran says he appreciates the awards he has received
Charles Foran but he does not write for the sake of recognition and so does not feel pressured to repeat his past success. “I don’t feel that I have to live up to Mordecai,” (See “Time” page 7)
