This is our annual celebration edition which pays homage to family, fashion and all things festive.

Editor’s letter SIXTY-FOUR … it’s a number that has been immortalised in folklore, in song and now (for us, at least) in print. Fitting really that this is our annual celebration edition, which pays homage to family, fashion and all things festive. Let’s start with home-grown hero Chris Hemsworth. Not only is this Bryon Bay local one of the most popular actors in Hollywood, he is also a renowned family man. In our feature interview Chris talks movies, surfing and finding the perfect work/life balance. Still on the subject of families … our Iconic Brand in this edition focuses on eponymous jewellery label, Jan Logan. Jan developed her skills while bringing up three boys in the small country town of Narrabri. Today she has stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast … and her son Angus works side by side with her in the business. Moving on to fashion. Apart from our gorgeous cover which features a dress by one of Australia’s leading designers, Carla Zampatti, the Looking Good section has a distinctly international feel about it. His proportions, and booming Australianaccented voice, are pure superhero. The second myth is that actors don’t like talking about their private lives: Chris, 34, gamely jokes about daily life with his wife and children in Byron Bay. “It’s a totally different life there,” he says of the decision to relocate his family from LA in 2015. “It’s all about the ocean, being outside, salt water in your hair.” Which makes the notion of the Hollywood star – who adds that his idea of bliss is a surf and a few beers with the boys – preening before the bathroom mirror a slightly incongruous one. “I owe any sort of grooming regime to myFor wife,” he laughs. “She’s the one making sure I moisturise and put on an SPF because it’s hot as hell where we live. “When I’m not filming, I’m outdoors, exposed to the wind and elements, so it’s important to look after my skin.” It was his wife, Spanish actress Elsa Pataky, who also had the final say in his union with international label Hugo Boss and its signature fragrance, which launched in 1998 and is now its bestseller. “She’s a fan of the scent, which is the most important thing – if she wasn’t there’s no way I would be allowed to wear it.

“I like scents that are light and summery, not too overpowering, but she gets ultimate approval.” Happily, the blend of bergamot, cinnamon, clove and vetiver passed muster. The actor – who got his big break in the soap Home and Away and played Captain Kirk’s father in 2009’s Star Trek before starring in Thor and Snow White and the Huntsman – was never the academic sort. “In school, I only cared about looking out of the window at the trees.” (Not out of any particular love of greenery, but because the direction the wind blew in would tell him what subscriptions please call +61 5577 the surf would be like that day.) “In talking about scents now, it’s funny because there are certain coastal plants that, when I smell them, totally transport me back to those moments of running down to the beach from school. “It instantly hits me: who I was dating, where my life was at that moment,” he says. “Certain board waxes, certain sunscreen too … they remind me of when there was just nothing to worry about but catching that next wave.” Life is rather more complicated now. The third film in the Thor franchise has just been released, followed in 2018 by the new Avengers movie, in which he also stars. >>

Despite being a ‘board shorts and vest top’ sort of guy, he enjoys the dress-up involved in red-carpet events and the structure of serious tailoring, something Boss does very well. “If you’ve been lucky enough to have a suit fitted, you learn how it’s all about the tailoring and how it sits on you. It’s also important to me because of my size,” he says. “I can’t really fit off-the-rack so it’s great to be able to feel good in something that’s more formal, instead of [feeling] like I can’t move in it.” His suiting repertoire comprises three variants: “Thor-build suits, in-between-Thor suits, and then normal me.” Out of the pinstripes and starched shirting and away from the demands of the film lot or press call, it’s clear that it’s the wholesome pursuits of his home that keep Chris centred. “Surfing is meditative for me … you can’t fret about work when you’re purely focused on not drowning,” he laughs. “Whenever I get cranky my wife sends me off to get some waves.”

THERE’S A WONDERFUL sense of completeness about the fact that some of Jan Logan’s best-known clients now come from Hollywood, the very place that continues to inspire her exquisite designs. “I’ve always been influenced by Hollywood,” she says. “From a very young age I loved films – especially musicals – and I still draw a lot of inspiration from those. I loved the glamour of Hollywood, and still do.” There was glamour at home, too, where the young Jan saw her parents, who lived on the land, practise an uncommon level of elegance with their attire for the local balls.

Such was their love of dance and style that Jan’s father, a farmer and grazier, kept special dancing pumps for these swish occasions – a measure of his exceptional taste and finesse. As the middle child in a widely-spaced family of children growing up in the rural community of Narrabri, Jan was somewhat isolated and, like many only children, she developed a vivid imagination. With her love of dressing dolls bolstered by the glamour inherent in the films she adored, a move into fashion was likely inevitable but, as we all know, the creative path is never quick and seldom straight.

Marrying young, Jan busied herself being a wife and then a mother to her three boys but, once they were older and at boarding school, there was at last time for something more – and here, fate stepped in. Jan’s new role, which was promoting the Narrabri Chamber of Commerce, saw her spending a lot of time in the shop of the town’s chief jeweller, who was the Chamber’s president at the time. With her innate creativity coming to the fore, Jan began contributing design ideas that so impressed the jeweller he offered her a 20 per cent stake in the business, and she was on her way.

Continued success and positive word-ofmouth inevitably led to expansion, which saw the travelling jewellery shows Jan had undertaken previously give way to international trade fairs and an ever-growing client list. It also meant Jan could no longer do everything herself. “We have a senior designer with us now, who is responsible for most of the work we are putting out, but I still have input in the design process and I set the design philosophy,” she says. One of the most satisfying elements of what she does is collaborating with fashion designers.

“In our early days we started out with Collette Dinnigan for her Paris show, and the following year we worked with Akira Isagawa,” says Jan. “The challenges involved in my getting into their minds and having them get into mine to create a beautiful and unique collection is always a great pleasure,” she says. Jan’s current client list not only spans the globe but includes style icons such as Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Watts, Joan Chen and Rose Byrne. With stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, she’s not content to rest on her laurels just yet – or ever, in all likelihood.

“I’m excited about continuing to grow the Jan Logan brand and maintaining its authenticity as we move it forward,” she says. “And I’m always excited to make my annual visit to New York – my son lives nearby, and I find I get a lot of stimulation from the city. The annual collection comes after that – the elements of design will reflect the influences of the trip. “After all these years, I still find the design process exciting, and I love dealing with people and with our staff,” she says. “I’m always ready and happy to go to work.”

SUMMER IS A WONDERFUL TIME. The warm weather breathes life into nature and people alike; and the mood for playful fashion is infectious. This season, the Northern hemisphere catwalks are exuding feminine style with edgy twists as the major fashion houses draw inspiration from their iconic prints and pieces. It’s a revival of the classic, where the trends of old are reimagined to suit today’s sartorial climate. Nobody does a fashion quite like the Americans and Europeans, and the Spring Summer 2018 collections have not disappointed. SINCE OPENING its doors three decades ago, the Gold Coast City Gallery has hosted countless exhibitions, workshops and events. But in what is perhaps the biggest coup to date, the venue is set to unveil a major international exhibition, Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast. Produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, which is based in the United States and Europe, this stunning collection brings together 100 years of the world’s greatest fashion photography; ranging from classic 1920s shots of Broadway actresses to some of the most recognisable photos of the supermodel era.

Condé Nast, the powerhouse publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour, has opened up its photography archive to the public, allowing access to iconic images by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and Mario Testino. The exhibition also looks at early work by luminaries such as Horst P. Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Corinne Day, Deborah Turbeville and Sølve Sundsbø. Gold Coast City Gallery is the only venue in Australia that is taking the whole exhibition and Gallery Director Tracy Cooper-Lavery is incredibly proud and excited to be involved with this milestone event.

“One of the things that is great about the show is it charts the early careers of many of the world’s most famous fashion photographers. There are around 150 photographs that look at 100 years of fashion photography and in some of the later works there will be a lot of recognisable models and faces. “It’s a great fit for the Gold Coast as well because we love fashion, we love glamour and this exhibition has got it all.” Exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, was given unprecedented access to the Condé Nast archives in New York, Paris, London and Milan, selecting images that show the sharp contrast from the early 20th century compared to the modern day.

“I was not looking for specific photographers or icons,” she says. “I wanted to make a selection that represented the history of fashion photography but also included those iconic photos that stood well enough on their own, across any era. “Some images made in the 1940s could still work today on a magazine cover. They belong to a specific period but are still visually strong, without regard to the page it was on, the era it came from or the product it was selling.” In addition to the iconic photographs, the exhibition will also include a selection of vintage couture fashion from The Darnell Collection. >>

“Based out of Sydney, The Darnell Collection is the largest private collection of vintage and contemporary couture fashion in the Southern Hemisphere,” says Tracy. “There are around 8,000 gowns and we have worked with the curator, Charlotte Smith, who has put together a selection of 12 couture gowns from the period that the exhibition covers.” In another exciting initiative, the Gallery and The Arts Centre Gold Coast will also present an array of public programs during the exhibition – from talks by international curators through to hands-on workshops and a micro film festival with a curated selection of the most seminal films and documentries about fashion. According to Tracy, who stepped into the Director’s role 18 months ago, Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast is just a taste of things to come for the Gallery, which will move into a new space in 2018. “I was raised on the Gold Coast and actually started my career at the Gallery in the 90s so I’m really thrilled to see how much the art community and the art culture has developed,” she said. “It’s a fantastic time to be back and be in the very fortunate position to be leading the development of the new gallery.” Plans are well underway to developing a cultural precinct at Evandale including a new purpose-built art gallery and a pedestrian bridge across from Chevron Island which will allow greater access to the site. “Space has been a critical issue for a number of years,” Tracy explains. “When the gallery opened in 1986 as part of The Arts Centre, the collection would have been under 1,000 works and over the past 30 years that’s expanded to almost 5,000. “In this transition period we are starting to get a sense of what we have in the collection, what the real strengths are and what the themes and the stories are so that when we open in the new space we can have dedicated areas. “In terms of size, the new gallery will be one of the largest regional art museums in Australia and will have the capability to take international, national and local exhibitions. “It will be so exciting for the city and for the visual arts because we are going to have a great opportunity to reintroduce the community and visitors to this wonderful asset. “One of the reasons I was keen to bring this exhibition to the Gold Coast was to give our audiences a taste of what they can expect once the new gallery opens and to raise our profile within Brisbane and Tweed to show there are some really exciting things happening.”

FOR TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER, the Gold Coast played host to one of the most expansive, and expensive, coloured diamond collections in the world. Valued at $150 million, the showcase included more than 60 fine jewellery pieces and important fancy coloured diamonds from the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia and from across the globe. With an international clientele and stores in London, Sydney and, of course the flagship Marina Mirage boutique, master jeweller, John Calleija, worked closely with the private owners to show the collection in Australia. “This collection has just been shown at the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles, and after months of negotiation we were able to bring it to the Gold Coast,” John explains. Ranging from yellow and orange, through to pink, blue, violet and red diamonds, only one in 10,000 diamonds produced in the world is a

natural fancy coloured diamond, making them extremely valuable. “These Argyle diamonds are so precious and so rare, and over 30 years of existence some amazing diamonds have come out of the mine, but once they are sold you never see them again. They go into vaults or private ownership so it’s very hard to get them back again. “To get a collection like this into our store for our clients to view is a real honour.” The highlight of the exhibition was the Argyle Violet™, a stunning 2.83 carat Fancy Deep Greyish Bluish Violet diamond recovered from Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia. Polished from an extraordinary 9.17 carat rough diamond, the oval shaped stone is now set in an exquisite ring surrounded by vivid pink diamonds. “The Argyle Violet was mined in 2015 but was officially unveiled as part of the 2016 Argyle

Diamonds Tender so it’s fresh out of the ground,” says John. “Of course, it’s been underground for a billion years – that’s how long they take under natural stresses and strain – and when it was being formed it mixed with another element to give it its colour. “Only 20 violet diamonds have ever been offered at the Argyle Tender and each year you would be lucky to get a teaspoon of red and blue diamonds and a handful of pink to supply the entire world.” To put this rarity in perspective, of the approximately 20 million carats produced from the Argyle Diamond Mine, less than one percent are pink. And with the mine closing in 2021, it is estimated that there are less than 500 tender quality pink diamonds left to be discovered. John has been an Atelier for the Argyle Pink Diamonds for nearly 30 years and says the gems are highly collectable.

“You have to think ‘What else in the world lasts forever?’ A diamond is something that comes out of our natural earth and is so rare and so beautiful. It’s there way beyond our lifetime … it’s an heirloom.” Given the rarity and intrinsic value of a diamond, coloured or clear, how much pressure is there to design something spectacular? “No pressure … it’s pure love,” John responds. “It’s an honour to take that beautiful piece of art that nature has been working on for so many years and craft it into a masterpiece for the wearer. I have to create it, design it and form it into something befitting. “You have to make sure you look after that precious little gem because they have to be set in a certain way to show their colour and life off beautifully so that it’s timeless. “Beyond the exhibition we always have an amazing collection of coloured diamonds,” he says. “Every diamond has been on a billion year journey and the most important last three feet is between me and the client.”

Sweet treat This delicious dessert is on the menu at the Brisbane Marriott Hotel.

Crème brûlée Ingredients 2 cups pure cream 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 5 egg yolks 1/3 cup caster sugar 2 tablespoons caster sugar for caramelising Method: 1. Preheat oven to 150°C/130°C fan-forced. Place a folded tea-towel in base of a roasting pan. Place four 3/4 cup-capacity ovenproof dishes in pan. 2. Place cream and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. 3. C ook, stirring occasionally (don’t boil) for 8 to 10 minutes or until just simmering.

Makes 4 serves 4. Meanwhile, whisk egg yolks and caster sugar together in a heatproof bowl. 5. G radually whisk in cream mixture until combined. 6. Strain mixture into a heatproof jug. 7. P our into dishes and place into pan with boiling water halfway up sides of dishes. 8. Bake for 35 minutes or until almost set (mixture will wobble slightly). 9. R emove dishes from pan. Set aside for 30 minutes to cool. Cover. 10. Refrigerate overnight. 11. S prinkle caster sugar on top of cooled crème brûlée and caramelise with a blow torch.

Food revolution Cuban cuisine is a melting pot of delicious flavours and cultural influences.

THERE WERE FEW PLACES more glamorous than Cuba in the 1950s. Situated only 160 kilometres off the coast of Florida, Cuba was a favourite destination of jet setters, movie stars and celebrities. According to Cabaret Quarterly, Havana at that time was “…a mistress of pleasure, the lush and opulent goddess of delights.” But as Studebakers lined the streets, mojitos flowed and showgirls danced, few noticed the poverty of those who served them. On the horizon, trouble was brewing, the pot of discontent simmering until it spilled over in 1959 with these words: “I am Fidel Castro and we have come to liberate Cuba.” Revolution had arrived. During the subsequent United States trade embargo and isolationist policy that would last for 50 years, the Cuban people waged courageous resistance, living by necessity on goods produced on their island. Hardship was hardly new to Cubans. Cuba, like many colonised nations, had endured a history of exploitation and social inequality. Following its colonisation by the Spanish, the number of native inhabitants of Cuba dwindled so African slaves were imported to operate mines and plantations. The blending of these two national influences, Spanish and African, forms the core of Cuban cuisine. Spanish brought cattle, pigs, citrus fruit, rice and vegetables to the island, planting sugar cane as a major crop.

While the African slaves brought no food with them, their culinary influences can be seen in dishes containing cassava, maize and okra, as well as in the most beloved food of all – tostones, fried flattened plantains. Throughout centuries of trade, French, Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese cultures also added to the culinary melting pot of the island nation. Cuban food, with its slow-cooked meat and seafood laced with the flavours of garlic, cumin, roast tomato, onion and capsicum with olive oil, is an eclectic mix of many cultures. Black beans (already grown on the island before colonisation), rice (a direct Chinese influence), lime (Caribbean), plantain bananas and yukka also feature on its menus. Some dishes such as churros and empanadas are a direct take on Spanish cuisine while others, such as Mojo Chicken and Arroz Congi or Moros (a mix of black beans and rice also known as ‘Moors and Christians’ – the black beans representing the dark Muslim Moors, the white rice the Christians) show a more obvious blending of different cultures. Coffee is another Cuban staple, with tiny cups of potent steaming black coffee passed through windows to the street, milk and sugar optional extras. “Cuban coffee is very powerful, very sweet, and a little dangerous – just like the people who drink it,” singer Gloria Estefan is quoted as saying. Though many Cuban restaurants today are government owned, in privately owned paladares, where people open their homes to visitors through

local contacts, you can taste the best food that Cuba has to offer. This is the cuisine that Harley Dhessi, owner of popular Gold Coast restaurants, The Cuban Bar and Lounge Dining and El Patio de Cuba, experienced with her family while travelling the Caribbean. Her chefs recreate the rich flavours of pre-revolutionary Cuban cuisine in settings inspired by the décor of that time. IF, LIKE MOST AUSTRALIAN WINE DRINKERS, you count the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy as the brightest-lit indicator of red wine in Australia and the direction it is heading, you might be surprised (possibly thrilled, possibly mortified) at the turn the results have taken. For the record, I am in the thrilled camp. In the 56 years since the inaugural trophy of 1962 it has been awarded on all but three occasions to either cabernet, shiraz, a blend of the two, or a wine dominated by either variety. Yabby Lake broke the mould in 2013 with its 2012 Block 1 Pinot Noir, 50 years after the award’s inception. And it created quite a bit of brouhaha. Another pinot – 2014 Home Hill Kelly’s Reserve – won in 2015. And this year, 2017 – hoorah, hoorah – it went to a bright, slurpy, fruit-driven but beautifully built Barossa old vine Grenache: Turkey Flat 2016. The shift runs deeper than mere variety, seeping rather emphatically into style. There has been a distinct move away from the bold, muscular, high-octane reds that enthralled us through the 1980’s, 1990’s and early 2000’s, to more savoury, lighter drinks. Which brings me to the point. High alcohol, oak-rich, ultra-full-bodied reds are still enjoyed by some folk, but there is a seminal shift to things that are easier to drink and more loveable in their youth. And it comes on the heels of a startling but overdue change to the Jimmy Watson award that took it from a selection of one year old reds (most, if not all, of the decent ones still resting in barrel) to a mix of one and two year olds. Much better … thank you. There is sentiment involved in wine judging, despite the fact that all involved try their damnedest to be unsentimental. The 2017 Jimmy Watson lineup included a terrific sangiovese, a cool-climate pinot noir, two cabernet blends, the winning Grenache and a beautiful, peppery shiraz. I was among the judges and I tipped in favour of the shiraz followed by the Grenache, but I had a hunch the Grenache would get up because – given two extraordinarily great reds – there’s something refreshing about a Grenache taking the honours. Sentiment. And, for the record, I’m sentimentally pleased. I don’t think Grenache could have made such a convincing case a decade ago.

It has behaved a bit like the second child – loved but ignored – that becomes a piano prodigy, Mensa member, athlete: it doesn’t matter which … just gifted. Right now it is strutting its stuff. Australia has had a long relationship with the variety, stretching back to 1832 – -viticulture’s beginnings for our country – with the James Busby collection. It thrived and for much of the 20th Century it was the most prolific variety in the country, much of its production destined for fortified wines. And in more recent years the Grenache strongholds – the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale – have used it as a useful blending tool with shiraz or made very rich (it’s a variety prone to high sugar, therefore alcohol stats), heady reds. My intuition is that the producers have realised that Grenache isn’t shiraz and it’s kind of foolish to try and eke shiraz out of an unwilling variety. Unlike shiraz, Grenache doesn’t take kindly to excessive oak, so ageing in old oak or stainless steel tends to give better results. And even though the best, old vine wines should have body, tannin and frame, Grenache relies on perfume, lightness and silky fruit. The result of this rethinking has been a plethora of Grenache that hits the very sweet spot of bright fruitiness, medium body and an immediate enjoyment, even if it has the potential to improve in the cellar: warm climate pinot noir. It’s slightly counterintuitive if you consider the global hot-spots for the variety – the southern Rhone and Priorat, where blustery, alcoholic reds (particularly in Spain) tend to be the most prized. Turkey Flat is no maverick; the transforming of Grenache has been happening steadily for the past decade. D’Arenberg has championed the variety for generations, and across its rather formidable range it produces five Grenache and three Grenache blends. They are shaped by their McLaren Vale origins and the D’Arenberg philosophy – plush, rich, built to age – but amid the bluster is perfume, freshness and brightness, only the ritzy wines from the oldest vines seeing much oak in their makeup. And Ben Riggs crafts a beautiful rendition (Mr Riggs The Magnet Grenache) made from a parcel of 100-year-old vines. It’s a little more savoury than many (that’s a good thing) but also light on its feet, pretty … perfumed.

To the north in the Barossa Valley Kevin Glastonbury worked his Grenache-magic early, possibly even catalysing much of the change. He has spent the last 18 years making wines – mostly reds – for Yalumba. And his Tri-Centenary Grenache epitomises the contrary characters of perfume, lightness and finesse coupled with the headiness and power that comes from vines that are close to 120 years of age. The variety does pop up in regions beyond South Australia and there are some nice wines coming out of Heathcote (Tellurian, Heathcote Estate), and even Queensland has some plantings. But South Australia is the state with the old vines, the warmth and the savvy to make consistently great Grenache, regardless of stylistic fashion. The move to fresher versions is – I reckon – applaudable and non-refundable; it’s a keeper. And that is sentiment echoed (or, more correctly, amplified) by the Jimmy Watson wine. Well done Turkey Flat.

THE OLD ADAGE ‘a break is a good as a holiday’ could easily have been written with Toowoomba in mind. Nestled at the top of the Great Dividing Range, this charming city is just a short drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast and is renowned for hosting the annual Carnival of Flowers in September. Since its inception back in 1950, the Carnival has morphed into a cultural spectacular with live concerts, dining experiences and arts and crafts displays. I headed up there for this year’s event, and discovered a township blooming (pardon the pun) with culture and character. Staying at the recently completed Potters Hotel in the heart of the CBD was the perfect starting point to explore both the Carnival and the city. Not only was Potters stylishly appointed with all the amenities you would expect from a newly

built hotel, it was also within walking distance to stunning parks, gardens and the Grand Parade route. And what a parade it was … thousands of spectators lined the streets as float after float – all decorated in the most heavenly flowers and fresh produce – wound their way through the streets, before coming to a stop in a market place setting where you could purchase the bouquets and floral arrangements straight off the back of the entries. In addition to viewing some of the most spectacular public and private gardens I’ve ever seen, over the weekend I also came across Disney Princesses performing in the park, listened to The Angels rock out under the stars and taste-tested my way through a variety of flavours and cuisines. And while there is no doubt the event attracts huge crowds, Toowoomba somehow manages to retain the charm and welcoming atmosphere of a big country town.

This is definitely a destination that is worth a repeat visit. The stunning Japanese Gardens are open all year round, as are Queens Park, Laurel Bank Park and the aptly named Picnic Point lookout. On a clear day you can literally see Brisbane from here, that’s how close this beautiful city is for a day trip or weekend escape. If gardens aren’t your thing, why not catch a show at the Empire Theatre, a heritage-listed building in the heart of the CBD, or head to the Cobb and Co Museum which displays an array of horse-drawn vehicles including wagons, buggies, sulkies and of course the famed Cobb & Co coaches. Another tourist spot to check out is Scotty’s Garage. Paying homage to the Rock’n’Roll era, the fun attraction contains a huge range of collectable cars and memorabilia, as well as the fabulous 1950’s T Bird diner.

Touring car A loveable little Fiat Panda took Chris Nixon to places no tour coach could reach.

AT SOMEWHERE around 130 kmh in a little Fiat that is screaming its head off, I realise I’m not the driver I thought I was. Tatty delivery vans are zooming past at 150kmh. It’s raining and my reactions are on high alert. Driving in Italy isn’t for the faint-hearted. England is calmer, but congested. In Finland, speed limits appear to be sacrosanct but the country produces the fastest rally drivers in the world. And wherever you go, be prepared for arguments with your normally-placid companioncum-navigator. My work trips to Europe have usually involved short visits with everything organised. This time was not so rushed, certainly not organised, and offered a chance to do things only a driving tour allows. ‘We don’t know how lucky we are’ must be the mantra of most Australians returning from driving overseas. Our roads and traffic jams really aren’t too bad, directional signs are everywhere, parking is rarely a problem. Still, an overseas trip wouldn’t be as exciting if there weren’t challenges. So for the guidance of readers contemplating their own driving adventures, here are a few of my observations:

You can’t divert spontaneously to some picturesque hilltop in village in Tuscany in a tour coach; if coaches go there it’s probably not worth seeing anyway. You realise in Italy why Europeans like very small cars. They squeeze down narrow roads, they’re easy to park and manoeuvre and drink less of that expensive petrol. I advise renting a small car, rather than something you’re used to in Australia. My baby Fiat Panda hired from Milan was perfect for exploring off the main roads. You might feel intimidated on the Autostrada, but elsewhere it’s ideal. Yes, Italians drive very fast on the highways but they’re well-behaved. Everyone stays out of the fast lane except when overtaking and flashes their headlights when they want to pass. I saw none of the impatience and aggression commonplace here. Speed cameras? Forget ‘em. At the rental counter, you will be offered an insurance excess waiver, GPS navigation and mobile wifi. The last two should be covered already if you have a smartphone/tablet with reliable internet access and a map App – both absolutely vital, by the way. I’d buy the excess waiver because it should ensure any unfortunate business can be handled directly with the rental company.

The same cover incorporated in your travel insurance is likely to mean you pay the rental company the excess first, then have to endure the rigmarole of claiming a refund from your insurer. Take a video with your smartphone all round your rental car when you collect and return it. It will be your record of condition if there are disputed damage claims, especially if no-one is there to receive and sign off the car at the end of the rental. In Italy, road signs seem optional in many places, or might be handsomely carved in stone but set high on a building almost out of view. Sometimes GPS can’t keep pace when streets and intersections are close together in small towns and Italian-ish pronunciations can be incomprehensible. Buy a decent paper map as back-up; you’ll use it often. Forget all that when the reward for selfdriving is to find my appointment with a Fiat expert in the serene village of Maleo, just up the road from another village, Stradivarius. Yes, that Stradivarius. Or driving in the Milan region, where signs point to some of the most enticing destinations in Italian motoring lore, such as Modena (home of Ferrari), Mantua (birthplace of legendary racer Tazio Nuvolari), Mugello (a racing circuit), Turin (home of Fiat) and Siena (way-point on the Mille Miglia rally).

Parking in Italy is scarce and tightly-regulated, but asking a local often finds areas where you can leave a vehicle free for several hours or overnight. Don’t expect most small hotels to provide on-site parking. There’s not much except pine trees, farmland and deep-green lakes around Jyväskylä, were I went to see the Rally of Finland. A Skoda hire car cost 300 euros for 48 hours, but when you’re in a strange place and need to see and do as much as possible, that’s a justifiable expense. Since this was a rural area, most roads off the highway were gravel. But smooth well-cambered gravel that brings out the best in the talented genre of drivers known as the Flying Finns. An Aussie feels at home, too. Finland is a beautiful country, calm, orderly and unspoiled. Long-distance driving is easy and stress-free, but taking one of Finland’s superb inter-city trains and hiring a car locally is a good option if you’re looking for an overseas driving holiday with a difference. Touring the lanes of southern England by car brings a surprise at every corner. Endless lanes, endless postcard villages, endless pubs, endless delight. I recommend basing yourself outside London, taking the train into the capital and using the car to explore the glorious countryside. Parking almost anywhere in England was at a premium during my visit. Even in little villages, the choice was often a paid car park a block or two from where I needed to go. Still, that’s better than a car park on the M5 motorway, which it often can be. Leave early for Heathrow.

An early retirement decision was cut short when Lee and Clare realised they were not ready to sit back and put their feet up just yet. “We had our own business in fashion, but when the GST came in it destroyed the fashion industry so we moved over to the grocery business,” Clare explains. “Sadly we lost everything in the Rocklea floods and had to rebuild from scratch, which completely exhausted us so we sold it and moved to Europe for a few years, where we opened an Australian plus size fashion company with 26 stores. “Following that we moved back here and asked ourselves ‘what do we do next?’ “We retired, but eight months later we were bored as we are very active people with three grown up boys so we did the next crazy thing and bought Carts’n’Parts.” What does Robert have to say about working with his parents in the family business? “I enjoy working with them … we have lots of fun and are a great team,” he says.

Property sweet spot The outlook remains positive for the Gold Coast property market. WORDS NICK NICHOLS

THE GOLD COAST housing market is expected to keep hitting the sweet spot for another three years, although the pace of price growth is slowing, according to new research. And despite concerns over the crackdown on lending by banks, one prominent researcher believes some analysts may be overstating its effect on property sales. In an upbeat assessment of the Gold Coast property market, the QBE Housing Outlook report, compiled by BIS Oxford Economics, has forecast average growth of 6 per cent in the median house price to $665,000 by mid-2020. That’s an average rise of 2 per cent a year, well down from an average of 3.5 per cent per annum over the past two years. Despite the pullback in Gold Coast growth, the report says it will come at a time when Sydney house prices are forecast to dip slightly in 2018 and 2019. The QBE Housing Outlook report reveals the Gold Coast market has been well supported by strong regional employment figures from the infrastructure boom leading into the Commonwealth Games, and it’s not forecasting a downturn any time soon. “Market sentiment (on the Gold Coast) is expected to remain positive as local economic drivers keep employment strong,” says the report. More broadly, the report warns that tighter lending by banks will dominate the market over the next year, leading to a slowdown in price growth nationally – particularly Sydney. However, property researcher Terry Ryder is not so sure, preferring to back the resilience of local economies to keep driving the market. “We think they’re over-rating the impact of national events, such as the APRA measures to slow investor borrowing, and under-rating local economic events,” says Mr Ryder on his Hotspotting website.

If there’s cause for concern in Gold Coast property it’s generally around the apartment market, but this time it’s not a matter of too much supply. Researcher Urbis in its quarterly Apartment Essentials report has shown supply and demand for apartments to have been in balance for at least two years. The most recent Apartment Essentials report for the June quarter has revealed that new apartment sales are now biting into existing supply levels. In the year to June 2017, Urbis recorded 1,264 new apartment sales with supply levels sitting at 1,137 apartments. At this level there is a little bit less than a year’s supply of apartments on the Gold Coast, although new projects released in the current quarter are likely to ease some of that pressure. Lynda Campbell, senior researcher at Urbis, says the prevalence of smaller boutique apartment projects, especially in the fringe suburban areas away from the beachfront, has kept the local market in balance. “There are several large projects in the wings which will alleviate any supply issues, but in the meantime supply levels remain low in some precincts,” she says. “If developers are able to deliver the right product, in the right location, at the right price to the market, sales will continue to be achieved.” According to James Branch, Knight Frank’s director of commercial sales, supply is being impacted by a waning appetite by banks to fund major developments despite no signs of oversupply. This has led to a strong focus on smaller-scale projects. “Because of funding constraints even the bigger groups have tighter constraints when looking at larger projects,” Mr Branch said.

“We’re not seeing a strong enough level of sales in these larger projects to give providers of debt comfort to back them yet. “A development with 120 apartments is considered a big project at the moment, so many developers would rather undertake three separate 60-unit projects than one 180 unit project. “So there’s now greater interest in scale-able projects right up and down the Coast, and not just in the major central development areas of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.” Mr Branch, who has been heavily involved in dealing with Chinese buyers casting an eye on the Gold Coast, says there is still Chinese appetite for Gold Coast property but the heat has definitely come out of the market, particularly due to new Chinese government capital controls. “However, we have recently sold a site in Broadbeach to a group from Nanjing in China, which shows that this market still exists although it is becoming more patient and discerning,” he said. “The biggest change over the past 12 months is that the Chinese groups paying super premiums for development sites has gone for now. “We are still also seeing groups from Singapore and Malaysia very interested in our market, but they are also far more astute and patient in their approach.” According to Chinese real estate website juwai.com, Chinese property buyers have remained active in offshore markets despite the capital outflow restrictions imposed on them earlier this year. Many are looking for lower value transactions and taking mortgages in the country of purchase. Juwai foresees the push by the Chinese government for financial reform will ‘amplify Chinese property investments abroad and bode well for a stronger flow of deals in the coming years’.

Dragons live forever. In the myths of old, dragons are beings of glorious purpose, noble and magnificent in deed and character. Their scales, imbibed with the light of the heavens, glisten and gleam in seas and storms, the stage for grand displays of power. The ancients spoke of these sacred creatures, which reigned over the earth, spreading blessings throughout the land. As time passed and legends faded, they hid, and were nearly forgotten. Relics of a distant era, buried under dust – until a delicate touch brought them back to life. In the morning of a new millennium, Shen Yun Performing Arts has awakened the sleeping myths of old into the present. And the result is nothing short of splendid. History of Shen Yun Established in 2006, the New York-based performing arts group has grown from a single company to five – each complete with a dance troupe, singers, and live orchestra – that now tours annually around the world. Its performance is grounded in classical Chinese dance, an art form almost as old as China itself. Nine years and five continents have seen nearly 3,000 successful shows performed in sold-out

venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and Palais de Congrès in Paris, among others. What started as a wish to revive traditional Chinese culture has exploded into a global sensation, earning the praise and admiration of art lovers from all walks of life. Art at its Essence True art does not need translation – its message reaches beyond the boundaries of language and speaks directly to the soul. The very best of China’s culture, spanning 5,000 years, is skilfully woven into original dance pieces and compositions made by Shen Yun’s in-house choreographers and composers. Some are portraits of its greatest heroes – the strategist Zhuge Liang, the heroine Mulan. Others paint scenes from folklore and fantasy – the exploits of the Monkey King, the halls of the Dragon King’s palace. Many are simply expressions of grace, beauty, and strength, poetry given physical form in gorgeous group dances brimming with masterful choreography. “In the soft moments, the quiet moments, and the energetic moments, you are really transported – it’s really beautiful,” said Canadian celebrity chef Christine Cushing after seeing the performance in Toronto.

From the vast steppes of Mongolia to the Himalayan heights, and from the battleships of ancient warriors to the gardens of an imperial court, each program by Shen Yun is a colourful leaf in the ever-growing tree of history. Though each piece stands alone, all are part of the whole, a colourful canopy nurtured from the seeds of a breathtaking past. Seeing Is Feeling Perhaps what touches audiences most is the message behind it all. There is an element of sincerity in the entire production. From the expressions on each dancer’s face to the lilting notes of each singer’s song, every sight, sound, and sensation intertwines as a harmonious whole. There is a real sense that the audience is not only seeing the show, but experiencing the lives of its characters as well. This is especially poignant in pieces that take place in contemporary China, illustrating issues involving human rights and the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual meditation discipline. The combination of traditional morality in a modern-day setting outlines the enduring essence of ancient beliefs and illustrates the strength they give for overcoming hardships in the present day.

SHOOTING A MAGAZINE COVER is an exciting and challenging proposition. Not only does it set the tone for the entire issue, it also has to reflect the theme, the season and the integrity of the publication. And each decision has a direct effect on the final outcome. What photographer do we use? Where do we shoot? Inside or outside? One model or two? Blonde or brunette? What should she wear? Do we need props? Planning can take weeks, even months. But sometimes things just fall into place … like it did with this issue. Location – Pacific Fair Piazza (although shooting here on a busy Thursday afternoon provided its own challenges). Dress – a gorgeous Flame red ‘Be My Bow’ Carla Zampatti gown. Accessories – Hardy Brothers kindly supplied the covetable pearl, diamond and gold pieces. Shoes – to-die-for Tom Ford gold sandals from Australia’s Luxury Department Store Harrolds. The result is a relaxed yet stunning shot, just perfect for our annual Celebration edition.
