City of Culture 2021

The Courtyard’s Chairman, Roger Morgan, is chairing a consortium to bid for UK City of Culture status in 2021. A range of local cultural bodies including Hereford College of Arts, Rural Media, Hereford Cathedral, Hereford Cider Museum, Hereford Live and the new University, are already signed up as part of the strategic steering group. Like Hull in 2017, achieving this accolade would raise the profile of Hereford and Herefordshire long term as an exciting and significant cultural destination.

The aim of the consortium will be to bring together a high quality cultural programme tapping into local expertise and reaching a wide variety of audiences. It is hoped that a successful bid would also create a demonstrable economic impact through innovation and investment in culture and creativity across the board.

Chairman of The Courtyard Board, Roger Morgan said: ‘The Courtyard’s work over many years with people of all ages shows how the arts can enhance everyone’s lives. We believe that by bringing together major cultural organisations in the county we can help to bring an improved quality of life to the people of Herefordshire’. Watch this space as plans develop for this exciting project.

Help us this Christmas This year, The Courtyard is partnering with Herefordshire charity Phoenix Bereavement Support Services, helping children, young people and their families who are facing the loss of a loved one. On average 985 children in Herefordshire each year will experience the loss of a parent or sibling; Phoenix, who receive no government funding, aim to extend their unique community service to reach more people. The Courtyard needs further funds to support our community arts delivery across the county.

We are aiming to try to top the record sum of £10,000 raised last year over the Christmas period. Please think of us over the festive season! GUEST COMMENT Peter and Tracey Prosser together run Peter Prosser Hairdressing, which has three salons in Hereford. They have lived in Hereford all their lives and are proud to live in a city with such a strong sense of community.

Supporting local charities and events is of utmost importance to us, both personally and as a business.

Hairdressing is all about people, so it is natural to us to want to build relationships and strengthen local ties in any way we can. The most recent event we were involved with was the fashion show at The Courtyard in aid of the venue and the Little Princess Trust.

The salon team worked tirelessly to demonstrate

some of their work, while local retailers and performers teamed up to make the night a real showcase of Hereford’s talent. The evening was particularly significant for us as Tracey is a trustee of The Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs to children suffering from cancer-related hair loss.

to her that it was founded in Hereford. We’ve gone from a barely-known trust to a charity that has attracted national press and support from some of the best known names in the country.

Of course, the community of Herefordshire is incredibly supportive and this was apparent throughout this fundraiser which saw the generosity of locals raise nearly £10,000 for these two worthy causes. We would encourage more local businesses to get involved in supporting Hereford’s events in any way they can.

The two actors, Ben Ashton and James Howard, worked perfectly together playing Wilfred Owen, renowned war poet, and his friend and mentor, fellow poet Siegfried Sassoon. Their onstage chemistry underpinned the entire play and the audience watched as their friendship blossomed and chuckled merrily along to their light hearted flattery, enjoying the ‘bromantic’ chemistry between them.

Ashton and Howard worked brilliantly in unison to bring to life the heartfelt biographical tale of a friendship at the brink of war.

How have The Courtyard’s development plans evolved since the summer?

After looking at a number of other arts centres in the West Midlands, we have created a series of plans for an extension to the existing building which will be sufficiently flexible to be used in many ways. In doing so, we have tried to minimize the loss of parking.

Will the Arts Council support the development?

The Arts Council have been very supportive of The Courtyard since its inception and we are hopeful that they will continue to do so. However, they are also subject to reductions in government support and therefore nothing is guaranteed when it comes to future funding.

Throughout the play short film clips were projected behind the onstage action, evoking strong images of departing trains, seascapes, exploding muddy trenches and blood coupled with the jarring sounds of ricocheting bullets and booming rapid artillery fire. Iconic moments of WWI were alluded to in abundance, including the epic battles of the Somme where half a million British men lost their lives, and a further quarter of a million British and allied troops died at Passchendaele.

Owen’s stammering and shaking hands betrayed his shellshocked state, his condition visibly improving when he was absorbed in the act of writing, a welcome solace from the horrors of war. MacDonald gives the power and eloquence of Owen’s poetry room to breathe, although at times the script could be fairly self-indulgent in its nod to extensive works of the Literary Canon. Clever stage direction from Eliot Giuralarocca kept the script fresh, the two actors reciting the poets’ letters in engaging monologues, with slight changes of costume (an applied head bandage or removed coat) marking the passing of time.

The poetry-in-progress scene was particularly captivating, as particular words from Owen’s works were experimentally edited and changed for maximum effect, revealing the open and honest way in which the two poets collaborated in the creative process.

The Courtyard needs to replace the £200,000 per annum of sustainable revenue from Herefordshire Council to support The Courtyard in the future; how will the development help achieve this?

We believe that we can raise the £200,000 needed from the hub in three distinct streams; firstly by rent from the arts organisations in the new building, secondly from increased Courtyard outreach work and lastly from higher Café Bar income as a result of more people using the building.

Last seen at The Courtyard with their retelling of Dracula, Blackeyed Theatre Company returned with their adaptation of Stephen MacDonald’s poignant drama Not About Heroes. The play opened to a stripped back set littered with stacks of books and pop-up ‘chalk’ body outlines which cast eerie shadows on the backdrop.

What is the new ‘cultural hub’ and what will it comprise?

Our idea is that by creating a new flexible workspace, we can attract a wide number of Herefordshire’s cultural organisations to create a home in the new extension and thus be able to work even better together in the future.

How will the project impact on the surrounding area?

The major impact will be during the construction phase which is inevitably dusty and noisy, and will include large trucks coming to and from the site on a regular basis.

How much money will need to be raised to make the development happen and how will it be raised?

We currently understand that construction and fit-out will cost about £5m. We hope that half of this will come from the Arts Council, but the rest will need to be raised from other Trusts & Foundations, Courtyard sponsors and private donations.

What is a realistic timeframe for the new build?

We are hopeful that the new development will open during 2017.

A frank and honest account of the futility of war, mocking the commanders who sent thousands to their deaths just so they could move their drinks cabinet four inches closer to enemy lines, the play is unafraid to recount graphic suffering the soldiers endured in No Man’s Land. As Owen writes in his preface, their story is ‘not about heroes’; there can be no glory or honour in war, only death and destruction. Survivors were left with physical and mental scars that haunted them for the rest of their lives, a nod to the post-modernist diagnosis of PTSD that even today causes many sufferers to face stigmatisation. There is a sad poignancy that poor Wilfred Owen was killed by machine gun fire on the 4th November, a week before the Armistice was signed and peace declared.

Not About Heroes brilliantly portrays the same universal themes of loss, pain, war and death that affect today’s modern audience.

A stark reminder of the human cost of war that we must never forget, especially in this landmark Centenary Year.

Owain Denning, age 14, says: ‘I really enjoyed the performance of Not about Heroes. It wasn’t just the fact that the two actors on stage performed their roles so well, it was the sheer intensity and sadness I felt as the story unfolded. It really, in my opinion, depicts a powerful image of what life was like in WW1. My favourite character was definitely Siegfried Sassoon because of his mysteriousness and his willingness to help Wilfred Owen become a young poet. Even though the company do not have

the resources to stage large-scale performances, I thought that they managed to capture the lives of both poets very well with a limited amount of props and people. I really hope you had the chance to see it!

BEHIND THE SCENES Mud glorious mud!

On Sunday 19th October, myself and nine other Courtyard employees took on the Mud Runner Challenge; a seven-mile run at Eastnor Park, consisting of muddy hills, slopes, and water filled pits.

Buzzing with nervous excitement, we waited in our holding pen until the whistle sounded for us to start and within seconds, we were faced with a river, which we had no choice but to run through.

Our next challenge was a VERY steep hill, at which point I was already exasperated. Only another 6.5 miles to go! Wading thigh-high through copious amounts of thick smelly mud, our only option was to keep momentum up and avoid slipping backwards. My saving grace was often a stranger’s arm or a stray branch, which prevented me from falling face first in the mud.

I was elated when we stumbled across the halfway point; a spectacular mountainous view where stewards distributed water to the tired, dirty masses! The fun really started when we encountered the water-pits, which were deceptively deep.

Being a mere 5’1”, and having a fear of deep water, I had many ‘Vicar of Dibley’ moments, confidently entering the water on the assumption I could gracefully paddle through, before finding myself neck-deep, then desperately seeking salvation from my wonderful team-mates who prevented me from going under!

Things got even livelier when confronted with sodden muddy downhill slopes, which could only be tackled by sliding down on our backsides. This sounds relatively easy, and even fun, until you realise while travelling at great speed that there are jagged

rocks poking out of them – ouch! At that point I was ready to go home. I was hot, hungry and dehydrated. My legs ached unbearably and every inch of me was caked in foul smelling mud.

Then I’d think of the £1k we’d raised so far on our Just Giving page, and knew I couldn’t give up, plus the determination of my team-mates gave me a surge of energy.

I was so pleased when the finish The Courtyard Mud Runners line became visible - after one final, very deep river - and I saw my team mates who’d already finished, cheering me on. As I stood clutching a bottle of water and wrapped in a foil blanket, I felt so proud of us all.

I’m not sure that I’d do it again in a hurry, feeling stiff and sore the next day, but it was a memorable event and we raised money for a great cause – The Courtyard! St Owen Street independent optometrists and Business Club member BBR recently undertook its own ‘Great BBR Bake Off’ to raise funds for Optometry Giving Sight - a global fundraising initiative that aims to overcome preventable blindness and impaired vision. Made in Hereford Festive Fair The Courtyard’s Fashion Show on 11th September helped to raise nearly £10,000 for The Courtyard and the Little Princess Trust charities.

Entertainment for the evening included classical music provided by students from Hereford Cathedral School, an acoustic set byJake Gamble, an amazing dance set from Elevate (the Dancefest Youth Company), and onstage performance by award winning Cantabile Choir.

Walking the catwalk were designs from Cherry Savidge, Hat Trick, Pritchards Menswear and Philip Morris, sunglasses from BBR Optometry and the innovative work of Hereford College of Arts’ fashion students, together with cutting edge hair designs by Peter Prosser Hairdressing.

The pre-show online auction raised nearly £3,000 alone thanks to generous prize donations, including a week in a luxury French villa given by Richard Claridge, a box at Ascot donated by CF Roberts, a Go Ape experience day and Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at Castle House. Thanks to everyone who supported this event!
