Afrovibes is a biennial festival of arts from South Africa and beyond, which originated in the Netherlands. It is now in its ninth edition. The festival launched in the UK for the first time in 2010, and plans are already being made for 2014.

Between 1 and 20 October, Afrovibes 2012 is visiting a total of 11 venues in the UK. From 24 to 29 September it can be seen in the Netherlands in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

And the Girls The Market Theatre Johannesburg in association with Tick Tock Productions presents

in their Sunday Dresses Imagine…a time when food is scarce and prices have rocketed sky-high.

In this play, described by many as an African ‘Waiting for Godot’, the process of waiting turns out to be more significant than the anticipated result. Finally, the two women resolve to stop waiting and seize control of their lives.

Imagine… the gap between rich and poor has widened so far that you are one or the other.

Imagine… waiting for days on end just to buy the basics to survive.

A hugely entertaining production, And the Girls…was the hit of the 2009 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

It is in one of these queues that The Lady (a retiring prostitute) and The Woman (a fiery domestic worker) meet. Although they come from different walks of life and have had vastly different experiences, an unlikely friendship develops.

The roles of The Woman and The Lady are played by Lesego Motsepe and Hlengiwe Lushaba — two of South Africa’s most celebrated award-winning comediennes.

The Lady has brought her chair, the Woman her lunch — and thus they become mutually dependent as they discuss their trials and tribulations, their triumphs and disappointments in the daily struggle for survival.

The play’s director, Princess Mhlongo, was Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Drama (2012).

Mother to Mother FreeVoice Productions presents

American Fullbright scholar Amy Biehl is killed in the Gugulethu township of Cape Town: it’s a pointless murder, carried out by four youths. The mother of one of them tries to make sense of it all by recounting events in an imaginary conversation with Amy’s mother.

Poignant, moving and ultimately uplifting, this is a personal testimony that captures the soul of an ordinary woman. We hear of the Mother’s unbearable guilt because of the part she played, knowing that another mother is now ‘without, because of me’.

This tour-de-force monologue of forgiveness and reconciliation is powerful theatre, delivered with dignity, sensitivity and humour by leading South African actor Thembi Mtshali-Jones. Music interwoven with the text heightens the mood as the tragedy unfolds, and the use of Xhosa phrases punctuating the English text lends a gritty authenticity.

Original novel written by Sindiwe Magona.

Adapted for the stage by Sindiwe Magona, Janice Honeyman and Thembi MtshaliJones.

Thirst Sibojama presents

Written and directed by James Ngcobo Choreography by Gregory Maqoma

Thirst depicts the fortunes and misfortunes of three water carriers from an African village that is desperate for water. On an eventful journey to find the source of their dried-out river they encounter mysterious characters, riddles and provocations.

This is magical, innovative theatre based on Baldini’s ‘The Water Carriers’: a mythic tale resonating with both past and future, its ecological message chiming with our times.

It’s enriched by dance, physical theatre, song and African storytelling.

Together the writer/director and choreographer have created a unique performance style, pulsing with succinct symbolism and potent imagery, set to an intriguing soundscape. Every shard of broken clay pot, every grain of sand, every fighting stick, every foot stamp, counts in this inspirational piece which bursts with fresh theatrical expression.

The production draws on Nguni mythology to create a show suitable for everyone, including families, children and schools.

It was nominated for the Naledi Award 2010 for Best New South African Play.

African Indigenous Orchestra Put on your dancing shoes and get down to the shebeen where the exuberant ten-piece Sibikwa Orchestra give audiences a lively exchange of rhythms and beats — a great example of crossover music as Afrobeat meets Township Jazz. Performances involve high levels of audience participation with everyone on their feet in a heady feast for the senses, refreshing musical tastebuds and evoking the true spirit and ancestry of South Africa.

My Exile

Is In My Head

My Exile is in my Head is a solo dance / physical theatre piece inspired by Wole Soyinka’s prison notes, ‘The Man Died’.

Qudus Onikeku, from Nigeria, explores the theme of solitude and forms of exile, looking especially at the contradiction between our mental idea of ‘home’ and the reality of the place one returns to.

This fascinating and physically challenging work is sophisticated, slick and wonderfully enjoyable. It’s filled with angst, beauty and resignation; with acrobatic moves, high energy and a spirituality summed up in the voice-over: ‘When I dance I am closer to God.’

Qudus Onikeku is part of the brilliant new generation of dancer choreographers springing up from Africa. He is a graduate of the National Higher School of Circus Arts in France, his work combining traces of Nigerian dance, hip hop, Tai Chi, Capoeira, acrobatics and contemporary dance vocabularies, as well as drawing on his Yoruba culture and several other influences.

My Exile is in my Head was one of the most critically acclaimed works when it was performed at the Johannesburg Dance Umbrella festival 2011.

Inception Choreographed and performed by Sonia Radebe

Inception is a complex, textured dance solo: an intensely physical and psychological journey into the psyche of a female dance artist. Originally performed in 2011, it has already evolved into a classic.

As the brooding sound of the Taj Mahal Travellers’ music reverberates around the darkened auditorium, a presence emerges from the wings: a beautiful body lit from above by its headgear. The figure in this mining helmet / straw hat / diving gear turns out to be a woman, whose gazelle-like movement pulls her into a succinctly layered universe of experience.

Embellished by Suzette le Seuer’s lighting and challenged by a techno whale song score by Nhlanhla Mahlangu, this gloriously graceful being surfs reality and imagination.

Finally, breathing and screaming, she starts to run, fighting her destiny.

Sonia Radebe learned to dance in Soweto from the age of eight, and trained at Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) from 2001.

Now a principal dancer, choreographer and teacher at MIDM, her range is impressive: she has appeared in Dada Miselo’s neoAfrican ‘Swan Lake’ as well as in Mark Hawkins’ ‘Hotel’, in an exuberantly dramatic performance.

Walking the Streets

The Three Furies The Three Furies is a dynamic poetryin-performance film, written, devised and performed by Zena Edwards (UK), Mbali Vilakazi (South Africa ) and Clara Opoku (Netherlands). It was shot partly on location, partly in the studio and during two live performances: one in London and one in Amsterdam.

The three performers translate and embolden the energy of the Greek mythical legend of the Three Furies.

First and foremost the protectors of women and children, they were feared as the most terrifying spectres of vengeance in the ancient world. Also known as The Eumenides — “The Solemn Ones” or “The Kindly Ones”, The Furies bring balance to injustices done to the Family. These three female poets translate the power of this myth into contemporary representations of womanhood to present an multi-media examination of women’s anger in the 21st century.

The Three Furies was filmed in Amsterdam by Sharon Jane (www.sharonjane.com) and in London

by Nathan Jones and Didi Jaleru.

Film edited by Nathan Jones (www.soopanatural.com) The production was commissioned

Zena Edwards

Zena Edwards is a London-based performance poet, writer and musician. Her vibrant performances are inspired by her experiences of travel, particularly through Africa, as well as traditional African music and song. She will be touring key dates with a special live set to introduce and contextualise The Three Furies.
