A Celebration of The Country School’s Giving and Volunteers
A message from Head of school John D. Fixx Dear Country School Community, A great pleasure every year is writing this letter to the school community to thank everyone for their generosity of funds and time. Thank you. In this Celebration of Giving and Volunteers for the 2022-23 academic year, I give special thanks to our Annual Fund Parent Chairs Micaela and Michael Darling; Board of Trustees; Parent Association Presidents Maddey McGrath and Aleagia Mercer-Falkoff; all donors to the 8th Grade class gift; Spring Gala 2023 Event Chairs Shannon Byrne, Tim McNamara, and Kate Vetrano; and the multitude of dedicated volunteers who helped make the year a success. Our children watch us devote time, expertise, and funds to their school, and they learn philanthropy from our example. Teaching our students to give gladly to others is an important part of our school Elmore Leadership culture and I know that spirit is important to our families. Because of your fundraising efforts this past year, the operating budget was balanced, the endowment grew by $406,897, students now enjoy a new Welcome Pavilion at Clark Circle, our STEAM program is stronger than ever, and our campus security and communication system has been upgraded and is operational. A message from development director jeanette brooks Dear Country School Families and Friends, In my short time here, I have quickly learned how special The Country School is. The beautiful setting alone pulled me in; the campus is a hidden gem tucked away on 23 acres. But the people are what makes Country School a truly special place. This is evident in the symbiotic relationships among all members of the school community. Our slogan is designed to continue to promote these priceless relationships: A world built for students so they can take on the world. So much of that world is built by the families, friends and staff. We look to the school community to continue to unlock opportunities for our students as we prepare them to take on the world. This community’s extraordinary generosity has me excited about the potential of The Country School. I hope you will take both pleasure and pride in knowing that your generosity this past year has been instrumental in ensuring that another generation of students receives the skills they need to take on and lead the world. Annual Fund: The Basics What is the Annual Fund and why is it necessary? As in most independent schools, tuition and fees by design do not cover the full cost of a student’s education. The Annual Fund provides funds that directly impact each student by enhancing academic and extracurricular programming, retaining outstanding faculty, and ensuring that a Country School education is accessible to an economically diverse population. How much should I give? A gift that is meaningful to your family is meaningful to Country School. While the amount varies for each family, a gift at any level makes a difference. Last year, gifts to the Annual Fund ranged from $10 to $100,000. The average parent gift was $2,750, and the average alumnus gift was $1,000. Above all, we strive for 100% participation. Why is 100% participation so important? A gift of any size is an endorsement of Country School and has a greater impact than its financial support alone. High parent, faculty, and alumni participation is an important factor that foundations and corporations consider when deciding to invest in The Country School. Does it matter when I make my gift? Though the Annual Fund runs from July 1 to June 30 every year, we encourage donors to make a gift or pledge before December 31. Making a gift or pledge early significantly helps Country School in budget planning. How is the Annual Fund different from the Campaign and the Spring Auction? The purpose of The Talent Within Campaign is to raise funds for the construction of our new buildings and endowment. The Spring Auction raises additional funds for Country School programs. Participation in either does not count as 100% participation in the Annual Fund.

Gifts to the Ensure Our Programs Continue to Grow and In Teacher Endowment For 67 years, Country School teachers have cared for and instructed our most precious commodity–our students. Today, 59 faculty members exude our mission. They make a living and make a life on campus, often wearing hats beyond the classroom–as coaches, as parents, as advisors, as trip leaders, as committee chairs. Academic leadership and teaching delivered by our faculty represent the heart of The Country School and its mission. The school must therefore continue to offer competitive compensation to attract and retain the best educators. This endowment allows us to increase salaries and stipends, bringing us closer to public school compensation and better-endowed independent schools. The Country School provides the finest elementary and middle school experience available, a responsibility that rests on the strength of our faculty. Outstanding teachers immeasurably advance the school’s academic reputation. The Teacher Endowment Fund allows all generations shaped by The Country School to honor teachers. Donors may make a gift in honor or memory of the teachers, staff members and administrators whose impact lives in their hearts. Today, the ability to competitively compensate our valued teachers presents a challenge as costs of living are increasing more quickly than tuition can be increased. Over the past two years, 10 families have come together with gifts to initiate the Endowment Fund for Teachers, hoping to inspire our entire community to make a difference to the teachers who shaped the lives of our alumni and continue to mold the minds of our future alumni. We aim to add $2,650,000 to the Teacher Endowment, with the annual draw earmarked specifically to invest in three key areas for faculty: compensation, professional development, and eventual retirement. nvestments in the Future of The Country School David and Marcia MacLane Scholarship Endowment Fund To honor the work and legacy of the late David T. MacLane, The Country School’s first headmaster, and his wife, Marcia, a special scholarship fund was created in 2012. Established by the MacLanes’ son, Duncan ‘64, and his wife, JoAnn, the MacLane Endowment creates learning opportunities for those whose options were previously limited, benefiting both the scholarship recipients and The Country School community as a whole. The David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship is a perpetual scholarship fund, tied to the permanent Founders’ Promise Fund. Since its establishment only a decade ago, the fund has grown to $292,000, already helping to educate 16 students who otherwise could not have afforded to attend and become leaders at The Country School and then beyond. John Lee Public Speaking Endowment Fund Founded in 2022 in memory of Dr. John Lee and in honor of Dr. Lee’s wife, Sang, and their children, Emma ‘22 and Kai ‘25, the John Lee Public Speaking Endowment Fund celebrates courage at The Country School by securing the delivery of excellent and effective public speaking education. One of The Country School’s Signature Programs, Public Speaking nurtures young leaders to speak comfortably and confidently, assertively, and intentionally, in all arenas of life, to adults and peers, family and strangers. Knowing and using their voices and empathetic listening, our students learn that what they have to say is important and that what others have to say is worth hearing. Country School students learn that successful orators understand and engage their audience in specific ways that can be taught and learned. From our youngest PreSchool learner to our 8th Grade Elmore Leaders, Country School students mature as public speakers through guided and deliberate practice. Elizabeth Coyne Scholarship Fund Founded in 2022 in appreciation by Dr. David Yuh P ‘22, P ‘22 and Dr. Bonnie Hiatt P ’22, ’22, the Elizabeth Coyne Scholarship Fund is awarded to deserving 6th-8th Grade students who live the mission of our school. The receiving students are leaders in all aspects of our mission and exhibit creativity, a sense of wonder, and intellectual curiosity. Recipients rigorously approach academics and seek to empower their peers to serve the common good–on campus and off. Recipients of The Elizabeth Coyne Scholarship Fund are selected based on need and merit as well as personal promise and their potential to grow as leaders at The Country School. Scholarships are renewed each year that the students are enrolled at The Country School, provided the recipients stay in strong academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship. These Coyne Scholarship recipients contribute significantly to the life of The Country School, creating a stronger overall experience for all students. Founders Promise Fund Inspired by the Burt Family’s generosity to scholarship in the 50th year, the Founders’ Promise Fund for Scholarship Endowment was founded by the Daitch Family during The Country School’s 55th Anniversary to honor the school’s Founders. The Founders’ Promise Fund Endowment is an investment in the future and is an essential component in our mission to provide an education that lasts a lifetime. Gifts to the Founders Promise Fund provide tuition assistance to more than 20% of our students. By assisting the school as we recruit and retain students, it gives more and more children the opportunity to realize their potential, which fulfills the Founders’ vision for the school. Class of 2023 Pavilion Legacy giving is a long-standing tradition at The Country School, as families of the graduating class have come together each year in kindred philanthropy to build upon the vision and generosity of previous classes who built the school that we all enjoy today. As a way to give back to their school, the students of the Class of 2023 came together to make a gift Class of 2023 Endowment and Welcome Pavilion. Class of 2023 Endowment Fund provides long-term financial stability and makes an immediate difference, while at the same time, continuing to secure and provide for the school we care about far into the future. The Welcome Pavilion is strategically placed in the Clark Circle, a gift from the outgoing families to leave a gift to help welcome new families into the school outside the building that houses our youngest students, an embrace across years and, eventually, generations, connecting us all. In addition to the pavilion, the class gift provided the essential landscaping work and the blue stone patio that sits under the pavilion. This space allows students, faculty, families, and admissions visitors a place to gather. This is particularly useful for bad weather during drop-off and pick-up. Spring Soiree & Auction The Kentucky Derby Party Auction and Fundraiser, chaired by Kate Vetrano P ‘26, Shannon Byrne P ‘23, ‘24, and Tim McNamara P ‘28, was held at the Guilford Yacht Club with trustees, former trustees, current and past parents, teachers, and alumni in attendance. Competitive bidding began with the kickoff of the online auction and culminated with a lively auction.
