Winter 2022

CLUB LIFE I had the pleasure of attending several holiday-related dinners at our Club recently, and at each of them, I was reminded of what a tremendous staff we have. They work tirelessly to give us the great experiences we are used to receiving at our Club. So as we end 2021, we need to recognize the fine job that Eli Edgerly, Grant Simpson, Chef Scott, Jamie Walker, Emily Lovejoy, and Brittany Fandrey do to keep our dining rooms running at such a high level, especially when we have been shorthanded so often this past year. And I must point out that not only do we have the best food in town, but our Club’s wine list rivals that of any restaurant in northern Ohio! Looking ahead to the new year, our membership levels, member parties and wedding bookings all look to be strong and the Board is very excited to see several of our long-range plans finally coming to fruition. We will begin 2022 with the opening of our new racquet facility, and we are excited to have Matt Powell join us in January as our new Greens Superintendent. Brian Mabie will be retiring, but has agreed to act as a consultant to the golf course restoration project. So with Gil Hanse, Brian and Matt leading the project, our golf course restoration is certainly in great hands and we look forward to an August start to that project. Our committees are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. Our racquet professional, Chris Klampe, and the Racquet Committee met this past week to formulate plans for the opening of our new Racquet Center and scheduling of court usage as well as some new events. The Golf Committee is working on a schedule of tournaments and events for the 2022 season, one that will be condensed slightly to accommodate the course restoration project. The House Committee and the Construction Committee will soon begin prioritizing and pricing the list of needed improvements to our Clubhouse that we hope to begin scheduling in 2022, such as exterior chimney repair, roof replacement, and renovation of the ladies locker room. As we approach 2022, our membership totals continue to be very healthy. This is directly attributable to the fine work of our Membership Development and Admissions Committees, as well as to you, our members, who continue to recommend strong membership candidates. Earlier this year, the Board evaluated all membership levels and their usage, and established maximum levels for all membership categories. The Charter Member maximum remained at 375, while the total number of Junior, Subscribing and Intermediate members have been capped at 90. The total Clubhouse Associate members are capped at 100. As a result of these limitations, we currently have a waiting list for the categories under age 40 and the Clubhouse Associate category. Since we lose an average of 25 members per year, the majority of which are Charter Members, we certainly encourage everyone to continue to nominate strong new candidates for membership. So the new year will be a busy and exciting one at Country. As always, we will keep you informed and up to date on our progress. I hope everyone is having a healthy and joyous holiday season . . . . and here’s to a great 2022!

CLUB LIFE 2022 is going to be a memorable year for The Country Club! The Club will be opening a one-of-kind Racquet Facility that will serve paddle, tennis, and pickleball. Preparations will begin to restore the Club’s remarkable Clubhouse. The Golf Course Restoration will begin in August and will be one of the most significant moments in the history of the

Club. The Racquet Facility will open on Saturday, January 8th. Several COVID-related challenges throughout the project have caused delays with materials and labor. However, we have been able to navigate through most of the challenges, and we are excited to open the doors to the Membership. A few finishing touches will still need to be addressed after we open the facility. A few items inside the facility will be completed once back-ordered items arrive; we will also need to come back in the spring to finish the parking lot, add the pickleball courts, and address the landscaping. However, none of the things should delay your ability to utilize this firstclass facility. Whether or not you are a racquet enthusiast, I would like to encourage you to come to the Open House on January 8th.

Matt Powell will be succeeding Brian Mabie. Matt joins us from Dedham Country & Polo Club in Dedham, Massachusetts, where he has served as their Superintendent since 2016. At Dedham, he successfully led a restoration project like our plan for Country. Previously, he spent ten years at Muirfield Village Golf Club, where he rose to become their Course Superintendent, reporting to the Director of Grounds. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, with a major in Turfgrass Science and a minor in Agriculture Business. Please join me in welcoming Matt, his wife Amy, and their son Jack to Country.

Another change we will be making to the staff at Country is to transition Faith Winkelman to a role as the Director of Communications. Faith began at Country in 2016 as an Intern and earned a full-time management position upon graduation. She has continued to take on additional responsibilities at Country and has proven to be an asset to the Club. Most recently, as the Asst. Catering Manager and Director of Club Activities, her responsibilities included designing The Courier and sending email communications. Evolving technologies and increased responsibilities necessitate that the Club dedicates a position. By transitioning Faith into this focused role, she will further expand and align our website content and online registrations, implement online dining reservations, and As we head into 2022, there will also be some changes with explore other means of communication such as private social the staff at Country. CLUB LIFE It has been a true pleasure to see so many members and your families enjoying the Club this holiday season. The traditional Thanksgiving dinner was well attended and to -go offerings an even more popular option. The annual Gingerbread Workshop and Kid’s Christmas events were as popular as ever and who could leave out the return of the spectacular Wassail Bowl after last year’s hiatus. Many members also frequented the Club for various holiday parties and a la carte dining with friends and family throughout the month. The Club atmosphere is so special this time of year and Its great to see so many members take advantage of everything Country has to offer. As we transition into 2022 there is no lack of excitement for the upcoming year. The Food and Beverage Team is happy to once again introduce the Country Tavern beginning in January. This casual cozy concept is a member favorite and operates Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings through March. We look forward to welcoming the many regulars who enjoy this space during the “off” season however, if you have not enjoyed this venue, I encourage you to give it a try. The completion of the new racquet’s facility in Mid-January will undoubtably create a lot of buzz in and around the new space but throughout the Clubhouse as well. It will be exciting to see how members embrace this new venue.

Emily Lovejoy Banquet & Event Manager

With the transition of Faith Winkelman from events and catering to her new role as Director of Communications there was a void left to fill in the Events Department. I am happy to report that these duties will be now be fulfilled by two skilled and deserving women. Emily Lovejoy whom began her tenure at Country in June of 2019 as an Assistant Food and Beverage Manager and was later promoted to Food and Beverage Manager responsible for banquets and events and Abigail Innes a current senior in Kent State’s Hospitality program and our summer 2021 Catering and Events Intern. Emily will begin transitioning at the beginning of the year and Abigail will continue to help on a part time basis until her graduation in May of 2022 at which point, she will join the Country team in a full-time capacity. Both ladies with the oversight of Alisha will continue to be actively involved in event execution and maintaining the high standard members are accustomed to. We are excited for both their futures and continued career development. As always, please feel free to contact me at gsimpson@thecountryclub.com should you have any comments, questions, or concerns.

FOOD & BEVERAGE I believe we can agree that we could all use a little more luck in 2022. Every culture has its own ways to ring in a lucky new year. For example, some cultures believe that what you’re wearing when the clock strikes midnight is exceptionally vital to your luck, wealth, health, and love life for the next 12 months. In Denmark, broken dishes are a sign of good luck. People break dishes on the doorsteps of their friends and family, and the more shards there are in front of your home the next day, the luckier you will be. So, whether you choose to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a Dinner here at Country, a quiet night at home watching movies, or planning for an achievable resolution, we hope you incorporate traditions that will bring you a prosperous and happy New Year! If you want to try something new this year, we invite you to indulge yourself this winter with one of our specialty cocktails or exceptional glasses of wine from the Coravin list. Brittany outdid herself once again, crafting the perfect sense of balance in flavors and providing a delicious finish within each cocktail. Nevertheless, if you are wine lovers like us, our Coravin Wine by The Glass Program is designed to pour wine without removing the cork, so each glass of wine always tastes like it has recently been opened. This program allows us to offer a more expansive wine by the glass program. Please never hesitate to ask our Assistant General Manager and Certified Sommelier, Grant or one of our knowledgeable teammates if you need a great recommendation with your next meal in the Dining Rooms! We are excited to welcome back the Country Tavern beginning January 7th. For the newer members who have yet to hear about our pop-up dining experience, we take full advantage of utilizing our Men’s Grill area for the Winter season and turn it into a family-friendly space for all to enjoy! You will have numerous opportunities to make reservations for this cozy and comforting dining space. The Country Tavern will be open Friday through Sunday night starting in January and ending in March right before we head into our annual shutdown period. Please make all reservations through the Front Desk, and as always, we hope to see you around the Club very soon!

FOOD & BEVERAGE The Club has had a very successful food and beverage season, and I would like to thank you for your continued support. I would also like to thank everyone who donated to the scholarship and holiday funds this past year. I have heard from many of our team members who have expressed their gratitude. These contributions are among the many reasons we all enjoy working at such an incredible Club. They also help us attract and retain quality people, which is essential in this current market. We still have three months left in our fiscal year, and we are looking forward to the return of Country’s Tavern (in the Men’s Grill) on January 7th. This extra dining option will offer comfort and fun casual fare, and it will be open for dinner Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We have also planned some great themed brunches, a movie night, ‘Open That Bottle Night’, and of course, the Gamblers Sale to close out the season. As always, we look forward to seeing you around the Club and hope that you have a safe and Happy New Year.

GREENS I would like to take this opportunity to thank the membership at Country. It has been a privilege to serve as the Golf Course Superintendent at the Country Club for the past 13 years. I am proud of the many things we have accomplished during my tenure. It was an honor to prepare for the 2012 US Women’s Amateur, design and build the new Golf Maintenance Building and set up the course each day for the members. I am grateful for the membership’s support of our improvements to the golf course, driving range, and clubhouse grounds. The Golf Course Maintenance facility is a pleasure to arrive at each morning, and it helps make the maintenance operation very efficient. I am appreciative of the membership’s support for building a first-class facility, and it should serve the Club well for many years to come. I want to thank the members who served on the Green Committee for their support over the years. I would also like to give a special thanks to Clarke Jones, James Taylor, and Bob King for the insight they provided me as Green Committee Chairmen. All these gentlemen provided me with guidance while at the same time showing an appreciation for my experience and providing me the necessary freedom to do my job.

The Country Club is a remarkable Club with a great membership, and I am grateful that the Club entrusted me over these years with the care of its greatest asset.

The buzz surrounding the upcoming golf course restoration has been very positive, and our golf team Men’s Opening Day is excited to be a part of this transformational Saturday, May 7 endeavor! While we are still working on details of the project, we do know that construction will begin on Ladies Opening Day Tuesday, May 17 August 2, which means our tournament schedule will be compressed into May, June, and July. Look for more Guest Day information about registration details in early March. Additionally, our Invitational Men’s Invitational field has been expanded to include 96 teams (the Thursday, June 9 previous limit was 60). Competition rounds will be 18 holes each on Thursday and Friday, and 9 holes followed by the playoff and dinner Ladies 9-Hole dance on Saturday. The registration opens on March 15, with a deadline Guest Day Tuesday, June 15 of April 15. RACQUETS Greetings racquets enthusiasts! I am VERY excited to present the upcoming schedule of events to you so you can get the dates on your calendar. The new facility looks amazing, and I am anticipating great interest in the facility. As we are planning the upcoming events, we wanted to make sure there were opportunities for everyone to utilize it. Competitive options will be Member-Guest events and local tournaments, social options will be informal round robins, kids will have Pizza and Paddle nights, and new to the sport players will have Saturday mornings to get on the court with a pro and be introduced to the sport. As we open the facility, we are going to have it staffed from 9:00am to 10:00pm on Mondays-Thursdays, and 8:00am7:00pm Friday-Sunday.
