Dear class of 2022, *listen to Hannah Montana’s “I’ll Always Remember You” while reading* Graduation is upon us. Four years later and here we are, free. For many, the years have been more– middle school, elementary and preschool. The freedom is invigorating, yet scary. All the constants in our lives for the last 18 years will change. Hello ice-cream for breakfast… or something like that. We’re adults… or something like that. Greetings to the start of the rest of our lives. New things are coming, but we’re grateful for the past. We strive to present all sides of an issue fairly and without bias while being as resourceful to our readers as possible. From time to time, we make an error. When this happens, we try to correct it as soon as possible. Students and community members are encouraged to write for The Cougar Press and to submit photos and videos. Dear Ventura High School’s Senior Class of 2022, As we exit these gates, take a couple pictures and celebrate this accomplishment. We’re leaving the safe space we’ve created for ourselves over the last four years and now, we have to go out into the world and create new spaces and plans for ourselves. You’re here today with a stance. You’re either ready to leave this place and everything that came with it, or you’re not. Either one is fine. It’s a little difficult to imagine a life when you’ve been guided your whole life. “Get good grades” “Behave well”* “Get a job” “Graduate” Okay, now what? “Follow your heart!” Seriously? Now we’re encouraged? Some decisions we shouldn’t take lightly. Every decision you make will affect your outcome in the future, just like your decisions have led you here, about to receive your diploma. Want to become inevitable? Don’t get comfortable, don’t settle. Life is hard, we’ve reached the point where we already know that. It’s even harder, when a light like Austin Gambill is taken from us and we’re forced to stay in the dark until we find a new light. Then I realized it’s his light shining over us, over this track and over this entire school. His light is eternal. To the number of Latinos I represent and graduate with today, I’m so proud of us. We’ve endured guilt, disappointment and stress, but today we celebrate achievement and accomplishment. Regardless of how we ended up here I am so happy to be part of the group that proves once again to society that we are good for more than just labor. We bring color and variety, our scars represent perseverance not weakness, and most importantly we bring good food. Do everything in your plans, on your terms but do NOT get comfortable. Go out and explore the world and get to know who you are but do NOT get comfortable. Get out of your comfort zone, quit playing it safe and take risks worth taking. Although memories are immortal, life isn’t.

To everyone here and students of class 2022 We did it. We all have gone through so much anxiety, stress that we have accomplished one of the important early milestones of our lives; highschool graduation. This is a big step into our journey of our lives. I have enjoyed my senior year, making friends, getting close to so many people you thought you would never get close to. The last few months of high school were crazy, so many emotions were flying around that you can’t tell the difference between excitement, nerves, or grief. Nobody wants to say it but we’re all thinking about all of our lasts, or if we’ll ever see each other again after graduation. As I look at this crowd, we have so many people coming from different places, different backgrounds, hobbies and also with different fears, different scars. As a Mexican American, being hispanic means everything I live, breath and stand for. To me hispanic means family, culture, unity, sacrifice, risks, and love. Growing up in a Mexican household allowed me to embrace the meaning of family and welcome the core values that have been kept in my heart and spirit. I am honored to be taught how to work hard physically and mentally, to cmmout and lead causes that are worth the fight. Not only was I led by examples like these, but I had great opportunities to see it in a hispanic community. My family is my main source of Inspiration and I am very thankful for that. My family has always motivated me to go forward and look to the future. They have helped me see the reality of what it’s like to make a Mexican family proud. As a teenager moving into a whole different journey is a big opportunity but I know that my family is there to help me through everything. Dear Class of 2022,

Oh, Seniors! I will miss you…even though it has been a long time since I’ve had any of you in class. Freshman year seems very far away right now, but maybe also like it was just a moment ago, right? That’s the trouble with growing older. Time dilates and squints and plays all kinds of tricks on you. Anyway, Before I get too melancholy… No, you know what? I’m going to lean into it! Remember all of the things you read in English 9, and how everything was super depressing and a big bummer? George and Lenny, Romeo and Juliet, Gene and Phineas? Maybe The Odyssey wasn’t too sad, but then so many characters died, the “happy ending” didn’t really stick? You don’t remember? Aha. Good. I hope that’s because your mind has taken in SO MUCH during the past four years – all kinds of academic tricks of the trade, social knowledge, emotional confidence, and just plain good times. The Romeos, Juliets, Boo Radleys, Georges, Lennys, and Circes became a faded backdrop to the joy that you found at VHS. What I hope you REALLY learned at VHS is that you are strong, you are intelligent, and you are loved. Strong like a Cougar – paws out, claws out! Intelligent like a Cougar – sharp and mindful! Loved like a Cougar – fiercely and forever! As I was writing this, I had to look up what you call a group of cougars. You know, like a pride of lions or a pack of wolves. Turns out? Nothing. There is no name for a group of cougars, because they are solitary animals. They stick with their mother and littermates until they’re ready to strike out on their own. That’s kind of perfect for your current situation, isn’t it? It also made me realize that OF COURSE there’s no name for a group of cougars. We already have the perfect name – Ventura High School. And even though you leave the litter now, we love you. We love you wherever you go and whatever adventures you seek. We will love to see what you can do, and hear about who you continue to become. I have two quotes to share that got me through some tough times after high school. The first is from my favorite author, Mary Shelley. She wrote Frankenstein when she was eighteen. (Hey! You’re 18! Someone write my new favorite book – quick!). In Frankenstein, the Monster says, “Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.” I have sometimes felt like the Monster, confused and abandoned by those who should have helped me. I have rarely felt fearless in my life. But when I have felt fearful, this quote helped me feel stronger. The second I learned from my step-dad when I was about 4 – “Don’t let the turkeys get you down.” Turns out my step-dad was editing his quote for younger ears – it’s actually “Don’t let the bastards get you down,” which was a dog Latin phrase created in WWII: “Illegitimi non carborundum.” We’ll stick with turkeys – I like the silliness of it. You’re going to meet many a turkey in the world. But their turkeyness does not make you any less yourself, any less strong, any less intelligent, any less loved. Turkeys stand no chance against a Cougar. Safe travels out there, Seniors. You are strong. You are intelligent. And I love you!

You have come of age during times that will define your generation and our world - BLM, Ukraine, COVID, the Capitol insurrection, fake news, and much more. As you mature and continue your journey into the future, your life’s path will be shaped by how you understand and respond to the uncertainties and challenges posed by this dual reality in human nature and the human condition. Your character will be defined by where you choose to stand, what you choose to believe, and how you choose to act. This ending is just the beginning! Please understand that high school is NOT supposed to be the best time of your lives! The best is still to come. Each one of you will now be on your OWN path. Please remember that you CAN do hard things so don’t give up when things get tough. There are parts of being an adult that are awesome. Your path will twist and turn but my greatest hope for you is that you find something to do for work that you enjoy so pick something that is worth doing. Stay kind, hardworking, and content! You will always hold a special place in my heart class of 2022. I have been a participant in many of your lives from the time you were little until now. I am so proud of you and the adults that you are becoming. And to my son, Dane Dathrego, I am so proud to be your mom! Class of 2022, you are standing at the base of life’s springboard, it’s time to decide just what kind of splash you want to make. I wish you the best, in everything.

The varsity basketball team faced a lot of changes, mainly getting a new coach, “being a first year head coach after 36 years of coaching I really thought we grew, it was something where we all had to get used to each other. I am a little different than coach Larson,” said neqw coach Feliz Cortez. This team had a lot of accomplishments for this reason, mainly reaching the highest league possible, and finishing their season with 18 victories. “A memorable game was against Buena. We lost to them by 36 for the first time. Our last game of the season was against Buena and we beat them in overtime,” said Cortez. On Feb. 2 VHS made a comeback against their hometown rival Buena. After the first quarter VHS was down by 11 points and by the end of the second quarter they were up by six points. Finishing that game up with a winning score of 70-66. When asked what his favorite memory was, Cortez said, “We actually had fans. I heard from so many people, parents and kids how much fun it was for students.”

Girls Waterpolo

VHS girls basketball coach Ann Larson led the team this year. Her team is the only D1 team within VHS school and their stats show why. Ranked first in the Pacific View League, the girls varsity basketball team worked long hours and hard practices in order to accomplish this. Although they lost their last game to King Girls Basketball, this girls team made other strides. When asked about it, senior Jayden Marshall said, “If you want to go to a winning basketball game go to a girls one for sure.” With a league win to lose score ratio of nine to one and an overall win to lose score of 19-8, the team had success and has encouraged others to join. According to players, this team is well supported and tight-knit. Inside source says they even have dinner at Denny’s after winning games as a sort of celebration party. Overall, the VHS girls basketball team had an eventful season.

During the boys water polo season of 2021-2022, the Ventura High School team took 17 wins and 11 loses. The team was champion of the Pacific View League, with nine wins and one loss. They made it to the CIF championship but lost in the first round against Westlake. The team only had one senior (Jack Lowell), who according to team coach Tyler Remnant “paved the way for a successful Fall 2021 season.” According to Remnant, the “best win” of the season was a 10 to nine win against Dos Pueblos. Boys water polo player sophomore Mick Lowry said, “I thought the season was fun, especially with the team I was on.” According to Lowry, the biggest games of the season were the two games against Buena High School. Freshman Ian More agreed with Lowry, “The two Buena games were very fun and intense.” More said, “It was a fun season for my freshman year. Our team really improved over the season and I am very excited for next year.” Junior Jake Eulenhoefer, who will be captain of the team next year, said, “I think we had a good season, but we have been working very hard to come out and compete with the top teams next year when we are admitted into the highest bracket in our area.”

Varsity Girls water polo ended with twenty two wins and six loses as well as one tie. Captains of this season are Martie Pecht and Emily Ball. They started off their season with a game against Westlake and winning eight to five. Their first league game was against Downey. Their score was a win of eleven to eight. The girls also won against Buena both times, finishing the first game at an away conference game with the score sixteen to four. The second game was at home and finished out at the score of thirteen to four. They also won in the Oxnard tournament, which according to coach Cherrie was, “a season highlight”. This game moved them up to number five in CIF division two. Furthermore, Rio Mesa with a score of eleven to three and Moorpark eleven to zero. They ended their season with a win in the championship against Santa Monica. Ending this season with a national ranking of thirty ninth. They are ranked thirty ninth in California as well.

Although the past few years haven’t been the most conventional, the VHS football team coached by Tim Garcia kept fighting. After the cancellation of their first game against Simi Valley the season started off on a weird foot, but things eventually turned around. After winning against both Newbury Park High School 48-35 and Cabrillo High School the team headed off to compete on the CIF level. “Keeping players healthy was a battle during our pre-season schedule and it made it difficult to get all our pieces of the puzzle together,” said Garcia, the team won their first CIF game against Rialto High School 37-27 but unfortunately lost their second CIF game against Colony High School 14-2 which ended their CIF run. “It wasn’t until late in the season that I felt our team really came together and it showed by making it to the playoffs and making a run to the semi-finals,” said Garcia. The varsity football team ended their season losing 14-2 against rivals Buena High School. “Our seniors deserve a lot of credit for working through situations their junior and senior season that they had no control over. They handled it well and I couldn’t be more proud. ​They will be missed,” said Garcia.

During the 2021-22 season, the Ventura High School cheer team was able to cheer in person for fall sports such as football and winter sports such as basketball. They even made their way to the Division 2 CIF championships, but did not win. Even though they didn’t place in CIF, they still had an eventful season. This was the first year the VHS cheer team qualified for CIF. They were able to compete in other championships, including the Hollywood Crown World Class Championships, in which they came in first place. They also were able to perform in the Ventura St. Patrick’s day parade. This year, they were able to continue on the tradition of “Cougie Camps” where they invite kids aged five to 13 to perform with them at events like the halftime show, or when they march in parades like the St. Patrick’s Day parade. This is a long standing tradition that they were unable to do last year because of COVID-19. Overall, the VHS cheer team had a successful recovery from the COVID-19 shutdown, and had a year of being able to cheer and support VHS team’s, as well as compete and earn titles for themselves.

Ever since COVID-19 happened back in 2020 this year was the first opportunity to have a “normal season.” Senior Cooper Anderson said, “We had a really young team this year, we didn’t have a lot of seniors. In the beginning of the season we only had ten seniors on the team but then we got more students from other sports to join track. We really came a long way, this is the farthest I have seen a team come, from where we first started in the beginning of the season to where we are now. We were the best team in Ventura County. We had a lot of stand out athletes, the number one standout athlete is freshman Sadie Engelhardt, She has the world record, broke the world record for age group for multiple things, she has the school record for six events now, she had a great season.” The track and field coach Kory Anderson said, “The track and field students had been working really hard and they helped each other, they were also encouraging one another.”

“The biggest highlight for me though was the summer and how the boys and girls teams came tightest to become the Ventura Cross Country team,” said coach Tyree Cruz. With hours spent running together before the season and time to bond at the annual cross country Mammoth trip the team was a force to be reckoned with. Both teams worked together to qualify for the California state cross country meet. Unfortunately, the team didn’t run as fast as they would have liked at the state meet. “They were ready to run fast and just did not race like they had been up to that point. I want a do-over on that one. I think they could have been on the podium,” said Cruz. At the end of the season, the team had a lot to be proud of. They got to number one in the Pacific View League, another shining moment of the season was when Freshman Sadie Engelhardt broke 16:00 for three miles and set a freshman record. “The boy’s team went from being talented young runners to being one of the best teams in the state. It was too much fun!” said Cruz.

VHS’s boys tennis team has played a variety of exciting and electrifying games this season. This team is coached by the one and only Alison Ferguson. These boys work long, solid hours for their success and triumph. This team practices almost two hours a day from Monday through Friday. So far, their hard work has brought them over five wins this season after winning their most recent game on the last day of March. The players celebrate their victory and accomplishments by congratulating each other and by posting on their instagram. @ Cougartennis2022 on Instagram posts updates on the boy’s victories. When asked to describe their team, junior Reece Pickett said one word, “Awesome.” This goes to show how skilled and confident the team is. This group of boys are precise and determined when they are on the court. Lengthened practices have helped these boys enormously. “I could totally see the progress our team has made since the season started,” said Pickett. This just goes to show how hard work pays off in the end. “We have the most success during matches when we practice,” he added.

Just before the 2021-2022 school year started, the Ventura High School girls’ tennis team began their fall season in August. With new coach, Alison Ferguson, the practices were daily with the exception of Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays, were game days. The varsity girls’ tennis team went their whole season undefeated and qualified for CIF. While the team lost in CIF, a couple girls, playing singles, continued on. They won against there crosstown rival, Buena High School. The captains are junior Jocelyn Wood and senior Tess Luoma. Luoma has been playing for VHS varsity tennis since her freshman year. This season was led through the combination of Luoma’s experience on the team, as well as Ferguson’s new presence leading the team. It was Ferguson’s first time teaching tennis. To prepare, she went to “oodles” of tennis clinics where she worked with coaches on technique and drills. Ferguson’s preparation, although her first time coaching, resulted in a successful tennis season for the VHS varsity girls. The season ended in late October. They won their first CIF lineup against Ayala High School 11-7, but lost their second CIF lineup against Whitney High School 14-4.

During this year of 20212022 at Ventura Highschool, the boy’s golf team had a successful year with no defeats or losses in their league record (100), reigning as the undefeated champions for the Pacific View League (PVL). Furthermore, the team was able to qualify for CIF playoffs and senior Logan Erickson was able to qualify for CIF playoffs as an individual. In addition , several players were named as All-League Honors. These players being Logan Erickson, Adam Reinhold, Nathan Long, Ryan Palmisano, and Taj Marzhal. Throughout the year, the team capitalized on their strengths and skill sets to pull through with their victories. According to coach Norris, “We were old and we had the most skill as a team.” The boy’s golf team worked hard this year and had various awe-inspiring achievements. Overall, as stated by coach Norris, “No bad parts of this season. It was awesome.”

VHS’s girls golf team, coached by Ryan Cybulski, had a smooth running 2021-2022 season despite changes that occured. Cybulski was new to the team, but adapted well and led the team to success. The players made it to league finals and placed second against challenging opponents who strengthened the girls’ game. Two of the players placed top ten in the league. These are seen as some of the highlights of the season. The team gained several new players who maintained spirit and determination throughout the season. Elyce Peck is a senior in her first and only year at Ventura High, “I feel like if we had a second coach to help with the newer players during practice while six of us were away at matches, I think it would’ve been less stressful to have two coaches instead of one for everyone.” The girls overcame challenges and the new players were able to learn confidence, motivation and independence in their game which made the team and their skills stronger in the long run. “The only thing that would have made it a better season is if we beat Buena,” said Cybulski.

The Ventura High School varsity boys’ wrestling team began their winter season in early November with coach Michael Gacha. The boys practiced after school from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.. To continue in a still COVIDimpacted season, the team had regular mandatory COVID testing. The captains of the 2021-2022 season are seniors Chris Egbert, Josh Smith, Clayton Lee and Elijah Flores. Gacha also coaches girls’ wrestling at VHS, along with teaching American Democracy and Criminal Justice. The team won their six-team league, which includes Buena, Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Santa Barbara, Santa Inez and VHS. 11 of 13 boys qualified for and competed in CIF. CIF places from VHS include Egbert, Lee and Flores at the tournament in Indio, CA. Egbert said, “I will miss the challenge of wrestling and the joy it brought me and my friends. Wrestling is a great sport and I would recommend it to anyone.” The VHS boys’ varsity wrestling team challenged themselves with a number of opponents, including the cross-town rival, Buena High School. VHS beat BHS 36-34. This is their fourth year in a row as Pacific View league champions.

Throughout the school year, the girls wrestling team has been continuously training every weekday, and occasional weekends. Despite the team not winning the league this year, the girls kept persistent with many victories throughout the season as well as obtaining some CIF players. Some of their main competitors were Pacifica and Santa Maria, who put up a strong fight. This season, the team got to travel for tournaments. Some out-of-county tournaments included Pacifica, Channel Islands, Huneme, and Ontario. One junior on the team, Alanna Meyers said, “I’ll miss the overnighters when we got to travel, bond, and win tournaments as a team.” After a long season of countless hours of training, the girls wrestling team has faced victories and losses. Even after the season has come to a close, the team works together weekly to help raise money for the next season’s tournaments and new gear. They also get together for friendly games of gacha ball and slap-back. Overall, the girls wrestling team has made great achievements after a year of distance learning and minimal training in the 2020/2021 season.

This season, Ventura High softball played against 22 schools. This year, the varsity softball team was led by Robert Dixon, head coach, and John McClain, assistant coach. They started out the season on Feb. 18, with a game against Santa Clara, which resulted in a win, 15-1. The team won 15 games, and lost 12. They are currently ranked fourth in the Pacific View League. They have 15 players on their roster. Junior Sammi Barnard had the top batting average of the team, at 0.524. Senior Bella Peinado had the highest on base percentage, of 0.591. Junior Cece Perez led the team in home runs, with a total of 5 home runs this season. Junior Savanna Higgins had the top amount of stolen bases, at 9 this season. The team has had 14 home runs and a total of 255 hits. This year, the team lost against the cross-town rivals, Buena. The season finished on Thursday April 28, with a 6-2 win against Santa Clara.

Head coach, Anthony Espitia has led the team through an action packed season. The VHS varsity baseball team is placed second in the Pacific View league. The team’s first game of the season was an 11-1 loss against Agoura, on February 12. The season was a pretty even break of wins and losses, but they have had success against all their crosstown rivals including Foothill, St. Bonaventure, and of course, Buena. They won 12-2 against Foothill on March 26, 3-1 against St. Bonaventure on February 25, and 5-1 against Buena on March 15. Senior Dane Dathrego said, “The season has gone pretty well so far, we beat Buena which is always amazing. We practice everyday for three hours after school, it’s kind of a lot but it’s fun.” The Cougars have a batting average of 0.298, above the national average of 0.278. They have a fielding percentage of 0.954, also above the national average of 0.887. So far, they have only had three errors, meanwhile the national average is 15. Regarding the post pandemic return to sports, Dathrego said, “It feels nice to have long seasons again.”

For the 2021-22 season, Varsity boys soccer played 21 games. The team lost nine games, won six games and tied for six games. They are ranked fifth in the Pacific View League. Junior Fransisco Ramirez had the highest goals per match. Senior Aiden Kelly had the most goals this season, eight total. Senior Aiden Kelly also made the most points on the team, 16. As a whole, the team made 29 goals this season. Senior Jairo Gallegos said “It was a fun season, we probably could have done better but it was overall a fun season, it was nice with all the teammates we all got along with.” He also said, “One of the best games was the Semi Final, or the Oxnard game.” Head coach, Claudio Lonardo also agreed with this saying “It was a fun season, we had a good time. We should have done better, because it was such a good group of seniors, but because of the major injuries it made it hard.” He also gave a shout out to “Moyo Orozco as the overall MVP, as well as Sawyer Brooks getting first team, and Aiden Kelly was top scorer.”

During the 2021-2022 girls soccer season, the Varsity team ended with 12 wins, seven losses and two ties. This year’s team had seven seniors. They placed second in their league. They also made it to the second round of CIF. In the varsity team’s first round, they beat Beverly Hills High School 2-0, but fell short in their next game against Mayfield High School. They lost that game 0-3. Ventura’s girls varsity soccer also had some success in their Buena rivalry games. In their first home game against the Bulldogs they won 3-2. After being down 0-1 for most of the game, the Cougars rallied to score three goals in the final eight minutes of the game. The second face off between Ventura and Buena was an away game that did not end as well as Ventura had hoped. They lost 0-1 after Buena scored an early goal that the Cougars could not recover from. The JV girls ended their season with 10 wins, six losses and three ties.

Boys Volleyball

The Venturs Beach volleyball team walked away from league meets against Buena, Oxnard, Rio Mesa, Camarillo, Oak Park and Bishop Diego with wins. Since becoming an official CIF sport, coach Artie Maidman describes Ventura players as driven and committed to becoming the best they can be. Especially seniors Grace Morton and Olivia Sletten who he said are highly skilled with controlling the mental aspect of beach volleyball, and are persistently optimistic leaders and students. Ventura faces competition within schools in Santa Barbara. The first season after the COVID-19 lockdown, the girls were unable to play, however, this year they were able to compete against other teams in their league, including Buena, Dos Pueblos, Oxnard, Rio Mesa, San Marcos, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez. Ventura was able to win a number of points. On their home courts at San Pedro these 28 athletes brought wins to VHS, and faced competition within the more established Santa Barbara teams, however, they were able to have a successful first season of playing as a CIF sport.

Boys volleyball finished their season with 3-14 wins and losses. They started off the season well, one of their biggest highlights being beating Buena on their home court, but there were some injuries and illnesses among players. The team had to adapt and they adapted pretty well, some of them even had to play in new positions. Another highlight was against Oxnard high school, when senior Garrett Hadrys, who is a middle blocker, had a number of great blocks and kills on Oxnard. The intensity of the team was definitely high, sophomore Scott Vreeland brought great intensity to the team. Seniors Colin Vaglica and Kai Sodergren brought a lot of energy and athleticism to the team. The setters and main hitters had a really good season, especially the setters they had a lot of aces. “It’s been good [the season] but we’re a brand new team so it’s been hard to come together and play to our best strengths.” said Collin Valgica.

This year’s team captains for swim and dive were seniors Emily Wright and Jack Lowell. In this season, students competed in the thirteenth annual Ventura County Championships. Girls swim and dive took first place and boys swim and dive came in fourth at the championships. VHS brought home the girls crown with 528 points. This is the tenth consecutive year that the girls have brought home a victory from the championships. Freshman Sarah Beckman, senior Emily Wright, junior Ella Montano and sophomore Delaney Shelton-Burrier set a meet record during the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39:71. The boys team for the 200 freestyle relay also took first with a time of 1:31:43 and a team of sophomore Paul Patterson, senior Jake Burns, Steven Byran and senior Owen Robison. Swim and dive coach Matthew Cherrie shared, “[I’m] most proud that the girls get excited to race and compete. The bigger the race the more they fire up!! It’s awesome to see that competitive fire! Our captains both exhibit this quality, Emily Wright and Lexi Zimpelman. Also their attitude helps everyone else.”

Meeting everyday during seventh period, the 2021-2022 dance team has worked hard on each of their dance numbers and performances. This year’s team captains were junior Ariana Goulette and senior Eden Harnar. The team has performed at every home football and basketball games. They also performed at many school rallies during lunch. The team held a “cougie camp” fundraiser, rallying together kids from all over the community to choreograph and teach a dance to the kids. They had their showcase at the end of the first and second semester, sharing all of their hard work and student choreographed numbers. The dance team has held many fundraisers like their food faire fundraiser, alongside their cougie camp. With end of the year auditions for the team coming to a close, decisions for the 2022-2023 school year will be out with the newest members of the team who are excited to share their moves with the school! “The year was really great with our team! I really wish we had more people on the team,” Goulette said.

This year, the Ventura High School drama department was able to have their first live show since before the pandemic, albeit with masks.The initial performance of the school year was the WHAT? Improv troupe’s fall show in the little theater. The show ended up with a full house, and then some. The outcome was, “a blast,” according to Junior Lourdes Lopez, and the audience seemed to agree. The first full drama production took place in the fall. Auditions were announced, and ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ was decided as the annual fall play. The show was staged with actors sitting separately, wearing clear masks, and props were in bins next to their chairs. This was the first show in the larger auditorium. “I really liked the way Ms. Rossiter did it. Especially with this year,” said freshman Zoey Pence who played Meg, one of the main protagonists. ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’ was performed in the spring. Originally featuring a cast of only the peanuts, Stefoni Rossiter, the head of the drama department, added in ensemble pieces as well to expand the cast. This was the first musical to be performed live at VHS since 2019’s Mamma Mia.

In the 2021-2022 school year, the Ventura High School music department had the opportunity to do things that they haven’t been able to do since the beginning of the pandemic. As a whole, the department was able to have many concerts throughout the school year, and they have even been able to attend local and national festivals. Senior Kylie Cloutier, who plays flute in the Wind Ensemble Honors, said, “I’m so happy that we got to go back to normal this year, and we were able to play super fun pieces and get the full music experience.” The Wind Ensemble, the String Orchestra Honors and the Wind Ensemble Honors attended a local festival in Camarillo, where they scored Excellent and Superior (the highest scores). The String Orchestra Honors and the Wind Ensemble Honors traveled to Chicago, Il. and competed in a national festival against schools all around the country. Both ensembles took home a first place trophy.

Show choir is a zero period class run by Heidi House. Show choir started with rehearsals over the summer in August, in which they would rehearse for multiple hours. Once school started, they met four mornings per week at 6:00 a.m. on their regular schedule. However, they would then meet frequently on weekends, especially with shows coming up. In the 20212022 school year, the show choir did shows such as the “Share the Joy” holiday concert, the “Tribute to the Tony’s” cabaret concert in the winter and the Disney themed “Seasons of Love Concert” in the spring, which included senior solos. Some examples of senior solos from throughout this year include Wyatt Mojo’s “I Am What I Am,” Alina Reitz’s “Love Will Come and Find Me Again,” and Charlie Cook’s “I Could Write a Book.” Because the show choir class is district wide, the performances included students from not only Ventura High School, but a variety of schools from VUSD, including Foothill Technology High School, Buena High School and El Camino High School. The all-district high school choir is called Company, while the middle school choir that also performed is called Crescendo.

For the 2021-2022 school year at Ventura High School woodshop worked on a plethora of different kinds of projects. Students built table top locket chests, and tables, hanging wall shelves and will be finishing up the year building an exterior bench for a porch or garden area. Students learned and were reminded of the many do’s and dont’s of the shop and how to safely conduct work within the woodshop. The woodshop program has many different tools that students can learn how to use including drills, saws and power machines. One of the more challenging pieces students were working on was the end table. Tim Garcia, teacher of the woodshop class and football coach said, “I personally enjoyed working with them on the chest. For many, this was their first build in a shop class and it was exciting seeing them light up with confidence as they navigated through the process.” The class prioritizes safety while making all of the different projects. Garcia’s goal with the woodshop course was, “Every student to dirty their hands.” He used this course to give students, “The opportunity to use as many different power machines as possible.”

Banner Bold is our school’s literary magazine that is run entirely by students and advised by teacher Greg Raney. They began the year by voting on the theme of this year’s magazine, which is “Unbound,” and formed committees. The Banner Bold staff has worked on reviewing pieces submitted into the poetry, fiction, nonfiction, photography, and arts categories to bring VHS artists to the forefront. They spent the majority of the year so far getting the word out about submissions and prizes. In order to do that, they have made posters, talked to different English classes, and sold Valentine’s Day grams for fundraising. They passed the submission deadline and have received writing/art from a large number of students. They worked at formatting the magazine and choosing the winners. Senior Lizzy Gonzalez said, “I’ve really enjoyed the fact that Banner Bold brings together the Creative Writing class, and everyone contributes their ideas and hard work to make everything work smoothly. I am very proud of the work we have done so far, and can’t wait to see the magazine!”

After two years of makeshift lessons and skill building practice through Zoom, the Ventura Highschool robotics team finally got to meet in person and build a robot for the 2022 competition season. The class of 20+ students met every Tuesday and Friday from 5:30 to 9. As the season progressed, they met up to 16 hours a week in order to perfect their robot. The class is a student lead class, with occasional oversight. They also have many mentors who rotationally intertwine with help and guidance in building preparation. The class began in the fall semester with basic building skills, prepping the students for the season. They have four departments– mechanical, electrical, business, and programming, in which all collaborated to build this year’s robot, “Milo.” They started building Milo in January and finished in late February, but continued improving it throughout the rest of the year. The team made it to the semifinals for the Ventura regional competition in Port Hueneme. There was also a series of many more competitions throughout California. The team was also awarded with the “graciously professional” award for great attitudes in their competitions.

In the Auto Shop class this year, teacher Scott Hayes had three classes: Intro to Auto Mechanics, Auto Mechanics 2 and an advanced class. In the intro class, students can walk in without experience. Hayes teaches students the basic maintenance of taking care of cars, sometimes their own car. Intro classes focus on the vital knowledge needed to own and run a car, from learning how to do an oil change to changing a light bulb. The second year class puts a bigger emphasis on auto care. The third year students were out on internships at local mechanics, which are treated like jobs. A big project the advanced students worked on this year is that they’re rebuilding engines, while the intro classes are starting their engines up. Autoshop is a part of Ventura High Schools Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway program, which helps lead students towards careers in the automotive field. Hayes said that Ventura and Oxnard college both have amazing automotive programs that some students attend after high school. Auto Shop is open to all students interested. Whether students want to work on their own car, want to go into it as a career or just to learn a little bit more about cars in general, auto shop is open.

At Ventura High School, students are offered a variety of electives to choose from. One of them being Floral Design. The teacher, Amy Lewandoski, spends her class period making floral objects. Floral design is the capstone class meaning it’s the final class of the three class agricultural business pathway and they focus on design of flowers for events such as wedding, funerals, parties and themed activities. They did flowers for sports teams and banquets as well.The class learns the basic skills during quarter one and two and then they spend the rest of the time doing events, learning bigger and better designs. They also study the business aspect of it. They have to learn how to budget, count flowers so they know how many they exactly need to complete things, and make a profit off what they create. Senior Ellie Melendez said, “The most valuable thing that stuck with me were the seven elements of floral design being line, form, space, texture and pattern, color, size, and fragrance.”

Mock Trial

The Ventura High School culinary arts class is taught by Kayla Hernandez, who’s shown her students a variety of skills in the kitchen. The class began in the fall semester as an introduction to basic knife skills and sanitation guidelines surrounding the kitchen and food preparation. After their introduction to the class, they headed into the kitchen and prepared to cook a wide variety of meals, ranging from sweet to salty to savory. This year they’ve made chicken parmesan as well as pizza from scratch. They’ve learned about different regions around the world and discovered the meals they cook in that area. Each section they learned about, covered a dish they made. They learned vegetable preparation, different soups like broccoli cheddar and chicken noodle soup, they’ve made different salads and even sushi. Surrounding the US region, they’ve covered simple, but delicious meals like biscuits and gravy and hot chicken. For sweets, they’ve gotten to make scrumptious banana trifles, and blueberry muffins. The class also had a cookie party where they chose a cookie of their liking and created it from scratch. Hernandez has been very busy this year teaching her students the rich and plentiful art of cooking.

Mock Trial is one of the many afterschool programs offered at VHS, where students are able to participate in imitations of a real court trial. Over the year of 2021-2022, they have completed two homicide cases total. Within this program, students are given a case to handle with there being two main sides along with different roles. The two sides being the defense and the prosecution, each one fighting for their own verdict. There are also different roles being witnesses, attorney, bailiff and clerk. In between cases, there is a lot of time given for direct and crossexaminations, direct examinations being where the attorney conducts an examination of their own witness to highlight or bring out facts of the case. Cross-examinations are where the attorney of the opposing side examines the witness to do things such as impair the credibility of the witness’ words. One of the main highlights of this program is when students are able to compete against the opposing sides of another school. While participating students are able to learn about courtroom etiquette, unusual laws, speech and debate. Over the year, meetings took place on Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30.

Hip Hop

During the 2021-2022 school year, the Ventura High School hip hop team had a successful season. They were able to perform at the halftime shows during all of the football games that took place at the home stadium. They performed at games like the Homecoming game and the Buena-Ventura rivalry game. They were recognized during Senior Night, where they were able to walk on the field with their parents, and had their names announced over the loudspeakers. The VHS Hip Hop team is mainly made up of sophomores-seniors, with it being at least their second year in dance. However, anyone is welcome to audition, and it is not uncommon for freshman or firsttime dancers to make the team. Overall, this year’s Hip Hop team had a very prosperous bounceback from the COVID-19 school year, and they were able to have a full in-person season.

Ventura High School’s prom took place on May 9, 2022 at the Ventura Beach Marriott. After two years of being unable to hold a prom due to COVID, this is VHS’s first prom fully back in swing.
