We would like to thank you all for the support and positive contributions that you have sent our way throughout the press’s nine newspaper editions and countless online articles this school year. As we hope you know, we are a completely student-run publication for the Ventura High School community and strive to present all sides of the story when covering an issue. We are here to provide well-researched information in order to ensure you all are presented with accurate knowledge about what is going on within our school and community. We, the Editors-in-Chief, both will be graduating this June. That being said, The Cougar Press will be sticking around and in the care of a group of hard working individuals. We hope that the press will continue to grow and evolve, providing the community with the most current news in the most relevant ways, so we encourage you to continue to keep an eye on it throughout your years at VHS. Finally, once again, we want to thank you for your unmatched support and your understanding of the importance of the free press. Grad Speeches

Louis Santia To our staff, for putting up with tomfoolery in class, our numerous requests for extensions on assignments and our relentless idiotic questions that cause them to question their choice of work. To our loved ones, sitting on those hard concrete steps in this fuming weather, for what is probably an hour now, waiting for me to shut up so they can watch their child walk down this field, as a wistful feeling pulses through them knowing that this is all over. You don’t have to drive us around any more! Kudos to you. And finally, here’s to you, Class of 2019, this is the day you have thought about for 4 years now. Now, whether that thought has been plagued with anticipation, fear or a general sense of, “ermgnn-meh?” it has come just the same. Now, I watched many graduation speeches in preparation for this ordeal, and most have a list of observations, a set of pointers going on into life or practiced advice on how

to live our lives in this crazy and fluid world. But, I’m just 17, if anything, most of you are older than I. So, instead, I will present to you one, single question: who are you? I mean, surely you’ve heard that before. Whether it’s bringing a pass to Mr. Togneri’s class or on the first day of school walking into room 105 rather than 205. Who are you? Now, I do hope you’re at least mildly perplexed at why I am wasting your time by asking you such a simple question. Though, sometimes, the most simple questions require the most contemplation. For example: What is a color? How do you describe it without referencing another color or an object that is that color? How do you explain chocolate to someone who has never tasted it or tell someone without smell what makes a rose so special. So, again, who are you? Not your name, address, GPA, extracurricular activities, schedule, volunteer hours, annual household income, job and etcetera. What makes you, you? Are you sensitive or tough?

Are you artistic or analytical? Pinpoint that one thing that you have always wanted to do, but been too afraid to do--scared of what people would think of you. Find that favorite song that you listen to at 2:00 a.m. with headphones, so no one hears you. Think about what the people around you do that drives you wild with anger, passion, angst or sorrow. Throw away what you want people to think of you, throw away that wellworn mask that you duct-tape over your face every day. Forget it, take that mask and shatter it with the biggest hammer you can think of, because I promise you that your colors that lie beneath are more beautiful than you know. As I previously mentioned, I spent a couple hours researching other graduation and commencement speeches. And all I found myself discovering was my apparent inability to write a good speech. I always thought I could never write a speech as funny as J.K. Rowling’s speeches or as inspirational as Steve Jobs’. Looking back, I was right. I could never write those speeches. Not because I am not good enough. No, it’s simply this. No one can do J.K. Rowling as good as she does herself, and no one could pull off Steve Jobs better than he could. I stand here before you a hopefully funny and kind, yet damaged individual, who loves his family, friends and his cat. Look, all I can do is be the best me -- only one person could ever hope to do that. So, Class of 2019, I’m gonna be me. Who are you?

Micah Wilcox Graduation is the time where we celebrate our triumph; but today, more than ever, we must recognize a sobering fact. Our country, our world, and our community face real problems: climate change, gun violence, racism, inequality, the list goes on. It’s 2019, and our community and our country and our world have never faced greater challenges. But these challenges aren’t insurmountable. In fact, they’re opportunities for us as newly empowered participants in our society to step up and lead the movement for a better world. Yet all around us - people are checking out - tuning out the world’s problems and dismissing them as unsolvable.

We’ve all seen it: in the adult that sighs and says, “That’s just the way things are,” and the friend that doesn’t read the news, “because it’s depressing.” There is a stereotype continually perpetuated by those in power that young people don’t know or care about what’s happening in the world, that we only care about ourselves and our trends. But when it comes down to the details, we the young people are the ones leading the charge for change. We, the young people are fighting the good fight for civil rights, for economic justice and for climate solutions. We the young people are revitalizing our American democracy. We are the impact generation. We’re the ones who stood up after school shootings. We’re the ones who lent a hand after our community was shattered by fires and shootings. In high school, we didn’t ignore the world around us. We found our voices and spoke our truths. As we exit high school, we can do more than speak our truths. We can act on them. And we must act on them, because no one else will. We can vote; we can donate; we can spend; we can advocate; we can organize; we can march; we can

do so much to make a difference in our communities. Our greatest strength is that we don’t accept the world’s problems; we don’t accept that gun violence will plague our communities forever. We don’t accept that nothing will stop climate change from destroying our homes. We don’t accept that some people are permanently doomed to homelessness. We’ve spoken up as high schoolers. And we need to translate that sentiment into actions beyond high school. Regardless of where we go in our lives, we must never forget the belief in change that allows us to speak up when things have to change. You don’t have to be the president of the United States to create change. You can be an artist. You can be a musician. You can run a coffee shop. You can be an activist. You just need to draw upon the same civic activist spirit that has allowed us to do so much for our communities as high schoolers. Where we had only our voices, we changed the world. We must continue to do so with our voices, but also with our votes and our dollars. Because our community thrives when we care enough about each other to act to make a positive impact.

Peyton Erickson Congratulations Class of 2019, we did it! As we leave here today we will each be embarking on very different journeys, but one thing remains the same. We all are Ventura High School Cougars. Thank you to the faculty and teachers who taught us to be good students and people and whom we learned so much from. Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who have supported us for the last 18 years and prepared us for our next journeys. President Ronald Reagan once said, “The future doesn’t belong to the faint hearted, it belongs to the brave.” Our last 4 years have been a true testament to our resilience and bravery. On the night of December 4, 2017, the Thomas Fire changed our community forever. It was devastating to see so many of our Cougar families lose their homes. But, we didn’t let that defeat us, we came together to rebuild our community and provided comfort and support to everyone who had lost their home. Our class was very active and we volunteered at donation centers, made donation bags, helped clear lots, and supported our classmates and friends who lost their homes in the fire. As we were getting ready

for our AP testing, the Thomas Fire was a massive obstacle in the already infamous rigor of junior year. But that didn’t stop us, we still excelled academically and performed well on our tests that spring . We didn’t just survive the Thomas Fire, it made us stronger and we continued to thrive. As a class, we have excelled both in and out of the classroom. Over the course of our 4 years here, our athletes have broken a multitude of Ventura High School records, won numerous league titles, and we’ve had so many Cougars make the All League and All County teams, and we’ve lead 5 CIF and State Championship teams. We also have the highest rated Music Department on the West coast. Our Ensembles won the Grand Nationals in 2016, every year we send musicians to the All State and All County Honor Bands. Our Robotics team has been to the World Championship twice, and won four regional championships. Class of 2019, we are leaving behind a legacy of bravery and success. Our ideas, ambitions and dedication will be what drives society forward. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “The future doesn’t belong to the fainthearted, it belongs to the brave.” Over the last 4 years we’ve proven our resilience and bravery, and it is imperative that we take that with us as we journey onward. Be brave as you pursue your career and opportunities. Be brave enough to be true to yourself always. Do not let fear hold obstacles in your way. Do not be afraid to fail a few times, before you get it right. As Michael Jordan once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” Class of 2019, be brave as you seize every opportunity that is presented to you, because the future depends on it.

Alexzander Valiente I’ve only been at Ventura High School for my senior year, but I have seen a lot. I’ve seen our senior class work their butts off to get here, and we made it. Now we have this big question: Where do we go from here? Honestly, I’m sure most of us don’t even know the answer to that question yet. Some are going to 4 year colleges straight from here, some are going to community college, some are going straight into the workforce, and lastly some are just winging it after high school. I believe there is nothing wrong

with choosing any of these options, we’re adults now and we have to make the decisions that benefit us the best or do what we believe is right for us. Some of our seniors who are going to 4 year colleges have worked hard for scholarships. Here at Ventura High, we have one of the top decathletes in the USA. Seniors here at Ventura High are warriors, warriors who are about to go out in the world fight for their futures. I’m here to rally my fellow seniors and urge you guys to go into the world fast and hard and working for your futures. We have the rest of our lives ahead of us, and we’re not going into the world for someone else. It’s our lives, let that just sink in. It’s our lives and we are making decisions for ourselves, decisions that will change the course of our lives. Sometimes we won’t always make decisions that are the best for us, but no matter what, we are warriors who get back up and keep pressing onward towards our futures. So Class of 2019, let’s leave here as warriors and let’s promise to never stop fighting for our futures.

Dear Class of 2019, Congratulations! You made it! I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you. The last four years have been character building years considering all you have had to navigate on a local, state, national and international level. Within our own school and community we had to deal with a torrential rain one year followed a couple of years later by one of California’s most destructive wildfires. In both instances, you all rose as one to take care of each other and also others in our community affected by those destructive events. Chris Murphy Assistant Principal

Dear graduating seniors, You have come to the end of your formal secondary schooling, where you are bound by law to attend school at exact times and do what teachers ask you to do. So congratulations! You are formally leaving your childhood and entering adulthood. Gulp! I’ve been asked to supply you with some advice as you move beyond school and, wow, I’m profoundly honored to be able to address you. So, first of all, thanks to The Cougar Press for reaching out. Secondly, thanks to you for reading and considering my thoughts that have been garnered from years of kicking around this planet. Okay, here’s my advice (in this order): 1. Breathe every day. Know you are breathing. More on this

We were also all impacted by national and international tragedies, challenges and differences that affected us at home. Though as a school and class you all might have had your differences on these events and their rhetoric, you at least would all rally around the fact you were “Venturans” and Cougars. I saw this over and over again whether I was with you at a sporting event, play, rally, dance, blood drive, or food drive. When faced with identifying, complaining or tearing down something down, you chose to find a solution and work towards a common positive goal. More often than not, you chose to forgive and look for common ground. As a result you raised money for the victims of natural disasters, gave blood for those in need, organized marches that led to new “orgs” on campus designed to educate and promote well-being, and take of yourself by taking care of others. When all is said

and done, when faced with challenges, you chose to make it a great day by finding solutions and pressing forward positively. Is it no wonder we have so many underdog championship stories to talk about from this class. I have great hope for you and the class of 2019. You are bright, hardworking and reflective. I wish you the very best whether you are going off to work, the military, a gap year or college. Whatever you do, remember that you are loved and cared for by us and more people than you can count or measure. But most importantly remember to love yourself- you are unique and special and there is no one else just like you. So enjoy your senior year and joyfully prepare for what is next. So here is to a long and triumphant journey. I know you will do great- you already have. Go Cougars! Best wishes Class of 2019.

Be the superhero. 3. Vulnerability = courage. Be vulnerable to what life has to teach you and live to discover what truth means to you. Without vulnerability we think we understand things when we really don’t. With vulnerability we continue to question our assumptions, continue to push ourselves to greater clarity. 4. Education = liberation. ‘Nuff said. 5. Your life does not belong to the critics that will judge you. Your life belongs to the

blood, sweat and tears you give. Your truth will never be fully understood by the world; you must witness your life with love and compassion and daring. Have a plan, make small, easy to accomplish goals to build momentum and confidence. And the critics? Shoot, they’ve been around since the dawn of time – like flies. Swat ‘em away from your cares. 6. Failure is your friend. If you’re not failing 20 percent of the time, you’re not trying hard enough. Dream big, study your mistakes, be kind to yourself, and refocus yourself (and/ or your dreams). Check out the life of Abraham Lincoln for an example of this. 7. Surrender to your reality. You belong here, now. Dreaming big is great, but it’s the here and now that gets you there. 8. Dear Class of 2019: As you go out into the world, think of yourself as a tree. Yes, a tree. Maybe a downtown Mission Bay Fig, or an iconic Two Trees eucalyptus, or a King Palm, waiting at C-Street for a perfect offshore breeze. Maybe you stay small but produce buckets of lemons. Maybe you grow into a historic landmark, large and powerful, earning plaques that tourists come to see. Maybe you’re transplanted to Rodeo Drive, tall and elegant in the middle of it all, or maybe you settle into stoic, slow growth in the lost depths of a Redwood Forest. Whatever kind of tree you are, as you now negative judgements every single day. Especially to yourself ! 9. Again, breath and know you are breathing. Seriously. Know what it really feels like to breath. Know your breath and you know your mind. Know your mind and you know your reality. Know your reality and you know your power. Know your power and you know your possibilities.

I know you will be a good tree because you have strong roots. You have Ventura roots, Cougar roots. And no matter where you are transplanted, your Cougar roots will hold you steadfast. They will anchor you in storms, feed you through long winters, and give you the strength to grow stronger and taller. We’ve nurtured and shaped you. Kept you safe as you grew. And now as we send you out into the world, grow forth from your Cougar roots and be a good tree. The world needs you.

Sports Recap Boys Tennis

As returning CIF Division III champions, Boys Tennis returned to playoffs, now in Division I. The team was able to advance past the first two rounds, but lost in the semifinals. The tennis team was able capture league titles in singles and doubles, and finished the season with an overall record of 17-1. In their season loss in the semifinals, Ventura tied 9-9 with Sage Hill but lost in overall points. Boys Water Polo

The Girls Tennis team placed second in Pacific View League behind Rio Mesa this year, and played very well against all other team’s in the league. The team went to CIF, only losing to Foothill in extremely close matches, bringing an end to their season. Several of the girls on the team individually qualified for CIF and made it past a few rounds.

Ventura High School Boys Volleyball defeated Rio Mesa in a wildcard match to make it to CIF for the first time in 8 years. Ventura did end up losing to Carpenteria private school Kate, eliminating them from playoffs in the first round. Tim Mays coached his second year for the Cougars. VHS ended up getting second place in Pacific View League with a record of 6-5 in league and 14-12, overall.

This year, the Boys Cross Country team competed very well. The team won Pacific View League and several runners went to CIF finals. The Girls Cross Country team dominated in the new Pacific View League this year, winning every single dual and becoming PVL champs. A portion of the team competed in Mt. Sac relays, one of the largest and most famous cross country meets around.

This year, the football team played against new team’s in PVL, beating Channel Islands and rival Buena. Senior Noah Conboy made the PVL all star team, and football had two new coaches this year, Coach Norris and Coach Gardner. The Cougars started off the season 0-7, becoming 1-7 after beating the cross town rival Bulldogs.

The Boys Water Polo team went undefeated in Pacific View League, ending Rio Mesa’s win streak of over 100 games. Overall, the team played very competitively, competing in the Servi Tournament in Orange County with some of the best D2 and D3 schools and getting third place. The boys made a strong run at CIF finals, ending their season at that competition. The team won league with a 7-0 record, leaving them undefeated.

The Varsity Girls Water Polo team had a record of nine wins and only one loss. They were Pacific View League Champions along with Oxnard High School. The girls made it all the way to the second round of CIF. They also defeated Buena High School both of the times they played them during league, once 19-1 and the second time 20-0. Overall, the girls had 304 goals for and 163 goals against.

This year, baseball went 13-15 and 8-7 in Pacific View League, qualifying for the playoffs but losing first round. This year baseball finished third in league, but was able to place second in the prestigious Bishop Gorman Desert Classic tournament. In the tournament the Cougars beat Bishop Gorman who is ranked number 2 in Nevada.

The Varsity Softball season did not finish strong, with 3-12 record in league and 0-4 record in non-league games. This put them in the fifth place position in Pacific View League. Fifth place did not qualify the team for CIF Playoffs. Their first win of the year was against Channel Islands, with a final score of 9-3. Kaylee Price led the season with runs batted in. She was also the ace pitcher.

Wrestling won league against Channel Islands and took third in CIF. “The last match was a scrappy team of a couple players versus a bunch of people that were sought out and selected for wrestling. We did a lot better than the tournament anticipated,” said junior Luc LeVasseur. Three players qualified for state this season: LeVasseur, Diego Garcia and Riley Beeson. The Varsity Girls team went undefeated in the PVL, making them PVL Champions.

Boys Basketball had a record of 21-9 this season, and took a place of second this season in CIF. Junior Andrew Ramirez (number 20) and senior Derrick Young (number 41) were named season MVP’s. Boys basketball also had a perfect 10-0 record in their first year of Pacific View League. The team beat Buena twice with scores of 62-60 the first game and 62-44 the second game.

The Varsity Girls Basketball team finished their first season in the Pacific View League with an overall record of six wins and four losses. The team is ranked 235 in the state of California. The girls defeated Buena High School the first time they played them, ending the game with a score of 4327.

For the girls team’s accomplishments, the girls Varsity Swim Team won Pacific View League this year and placed 4th as a team at CIF. They also won Ventura County Championships in March. Junior Téa Laughlin broke the CIF D3 record and school record in the 100 meter backstroke. She also set a school record in the 200 meter individual medley.

In boys JV and Varsity, track and field found themselves as undefeated champions in the Pacific View League. Boys Varsity seniors Derek Pekar, Charlie Hammel, Carlos Aviles and Ben Maidman, was claimed their first CIF championship since 1999. Girls JV and Varsity were undefeated PVL champions. Varsity girls competed at the state track in Clovis at West Coast Relays.

The Girls Golf team placed second in the PVL league this year and several players went to CIF. Boys Golf was able to beat Buena in their last league match, and finish with a record of 5-5 in league. Boys golf was also able to rack up an overall record of 10-8. Suraj Ranchod, a senior on the team, placed fourth in league, and advanced past the first round of CIF.

Arts & Entertainment Recap The music department ends the year on a high note This year, the music department has held about a dozen music performances, raked in “gold” ratings at festivals state and nation-wide. Tanya Turchyn

The jazz ensemble this year has brought several performances, featuring pieces such as “Off the Hook” and broadcasting soloists such as seniors Malia Matthews, Mackenzie Jones, Jonathan Van Hyning and more. The String Ensemble and Concert Band closed their year with a concert on May 16, at which the strings performed “Serenade for String Orchestra” by Leyden and “Arlington Sketches” by Del Borgo among others and the latter performed “Toccata for Band” by Erickson and “Prairie Dances” by Holsinger, among others. The String Ensemble is finishing the year with senior Peyton Erickson as concert master violinist and Andrea Evangelista as principal. Concert band, majority of which has consisted of freshmen this year, has seen “large improvement” as stated by director Paul Hunt. The Honors String

Orchestra has brought to the stage both full orchestra and string orchestra repertoire. It performed at the West Ranch festival where the musicians earned a “gold” rating and were lucky to perform extremely challenging music. The year is coming to an end with many prominent musicians such as first-chair players junior Lola Bobrow, sophomore Nikhil Maserang, Elizabeth Callahan and violist sophomore Madeline Locher. Its two honors quartets have received great ratings at local festivals as well. The Wind Ensemble II Honors has performed professional-level repertoire with pieces by composers such as Sparke, Shostakovich, Nelson and more. Its lineup at the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational in Atlanta featured repertoire such as “Rocky Point” by Nelson, and other pieces that elicited great feedback from the invitational’s esteemed judges and was some of the highest-level repertoire performed at the invitational.

The VHS drama department arguably had one of their most successful years yet, with “Night Watch” filling the little theater multiple times and “Mamma Mia!” raking in about $5,000 on the first two nights alone. “Night Watch’s” nine-person cast was the second-smallest to take the stage since drama department head Stefoni Rossiter obtained her position at VHS and is debatably one of the darkest plays to be performed on the VHS stage. “Mamma Mia!,” on the other hand, had quite a tonal departure from “Night Watch” and brought in the largest crowd Rossiter has

ever seen for a Ventura High theater production on Friday, May 10. As per usual, a Winter Showcase and Spring Showcase were put on in the Little Theater and were themed after the Wild West (“The Showcase Showdown”) and televised talent shows (“VHS’s Got Talent”), respectively. Despite the “What?” Improv Troupe only seeing five returners from last year’s 2017-18 lineup, one of Rossiter’s largest troupes to date was assembled after tryouts, with seniors Acacia Harrell and Louis Santia elected as its captains. The 22 person troupe put on two “Backstage Cafe” productions on the main stage and performed in both showcases as well.

VHS on... Summer Plans

“I don’t have any special plans this summer, I’m just going to hang out with my friends a lot and hopefully go camping a couple of times,” said sophomore Jake Nichols.

Junior Dylan Manning shared, “This summer I’m planning on getting a job to earn some extra money and I’m going to go tour some local colleges.” “This summer I’m working at CMH, Im very excited to get an inside perspective on what being a doctor is like,” said sophomore Logan Wilkov.

Senior Antonetta Gutierrez said, “My favorite spot on campus would be either the wrestling room, because I’ve wrestled for four years, or this bench, because I’ve hung out here all of high school.” Freshman Remi Young told us, “This summer I’m going to Italy with my family, I’m excited to eat amazing food and lots of gelato.”

Junior Aldo Garcia said, “I can’t wait to go on summer vacation to Hawaii. You already know I’m going to have the time of my life.”
