Russell Maliphant has been a defining figure in British dance and continues to captivate audiences with his enduring artistry. He has been Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells since 2005, and has received numerous accolades throughout his career.
He established his company in 1996, and since that time Russell Maliphant Dance Company has received two Olivier awards, three South Bank Show awards and three Critics’ Circle National Dance awards for best modern choreography and one for best independent company.
Russell gained his PhD from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2020, to stand alongside the honorary doctorate he received from Plymouth University in 2011.
Maliphant is celebrated for his visually rich dance works and groundbreaking approach to flow and energy, continually exploring the relationship between movement, light, and music. He is considered to be one of Britain’s leading modern dance creators, a key figure in the evolution of contemporary dance.
Daniel Proietto is an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer, whose impact on contemporary dance has resonated on the world’s most prestigious stages. Trained at the Teatro Colón, he began his career at 16 with the Ballet de Santiago de Chile, the Ballet del Teatro Argentino, the Ballet Contemporáneo del San Martín, and Carte Blanche in Norway.
In 2013, the Norwegian National Ballet named him Guest Artist, an exceptional recognition for a contemporary dancer. He has mesmerized audiences at the New York City Center, London’s Coliseum, and Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan, among others. His solo AfterLight, by Russell Maliphant, was awarded and acclaimed by critics, along with his celebrated works Rasa and Cygne.
Proietto is a founding member of Norwegian dance and theatre company Winter Guests, its director Alan Lucien Øyen creates many works for him, such as the solo Screened Out - Øyen's first ever work for another performer, Avenida Corrientes - a duet with Proietto and Andrew Wale that would become Øyens first film: Avenida Corrientes The Movie; and most famously, Simulacrum - a duet with Proietto and Japanese Flamenco legend Shoji Kojima.
This World Premiere is the latest creation by Russell Maliphant – a powerful and moving 30-minute solo performance that showcases Maliphant’s distinctive approach as he dances with light and shadows. Seamlessly blending movement, light, and sound, In a Landscape was developed in close collaboration with visual artist Panagiotis Tomaras and features a musical world created especially for the show by long-time collaborative partner and composer Dana Fouras

AfterLight is a 15-minute solo inspired by photographs and geometric drawings of the legendary Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. A single dancer, Daniel Proietto,whirls beneath a dying spotlight, creating a continuous thread of movement accompanied by the spare delicate music of Satie’s Gnossiennes. Fleeting moments from the great Nijinsky ballets inform Maliphant’s choreography and Daniel Proietto’s extraordinary performance
