MARTHA FIENNES
Martha Fiennes is an award-winning filmmaker, director, writer and artist. Her multilayered work is informed by technological developments and ideas in contemporary art whilst maintaining the artistic expression of a highly gifted filmmaker Her debut artwork Nativity, 2011 has been exhibited at the V&A, the National Gallery, Sotheby’s London and Paris and the Venice Biennale 2017 and The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg June /December 2018
Fiennes has directed two high profile feature films including the sumptuous Russian period piece Onegin, starring Liv Tyler and Ralph Fiennes. Onegin, which won the Tokyo Film Festival, was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best British Film in 1999 and won her the London Critics Award for Best Newcomer. Her second feature Chromophobia attracted a star studded cast (Penelope Cruz, Damian Lewis, Kristin Scott Thomas) and was applauded for its powerful contemporary style and ‘icy and superb script’ Chromophobia, both written and directed by Martha closed the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. She is an active member of the UK film industry and has served on several BAFTA juries. In 2015 she headed the Film Jury at the annual Film Festival in Tblisi, Georgia.
GENERATIVE ART
With her production team, Fiennes brings to her work substantial experience of filmmaking and visual effects technology to create dynamic works which are able to perpetually self-generate in a continuous, non-predictable, ‘randomised’ visual display. This means that the works are liberated from the need to be played over or “looped”
By combining coding instructions with prerendered imagery, Fiennes enables video and audio layers to be selected at random and in ‘real time’ from a substantial database of original imagery and recorded sound The works are consequently liberated from the traditional, prescribed and linear film format, as narrative control is relinquished to the computer engine which drives the work This means that the storytelling process is discharged from being fully controlled by the artist/director, making each viewing experience spontaneous and unique.
The technology behind the work enables sequences of video and audio layers to be selected autonomously (i.e. at random) by the machine, in real time, from a substantial database of prerendered imagery and recorded sound. The result is a highly immersive, mesmeric experience
Fiennes explains that these hybrid works are neither ‘film' nor 'video art’ but a new - or hybrid form of moving-image media, in which the work itself possesses its own degree of narrative autonomy.
YUGEN
Yugen is an artwork inspired by the Japanese aesthetic concept of profound beauty and mystery, evoking awareness of a universe beyond full comprehension. It explores the contrast between the material world and alternate planes of existence, blending reality with potential and influence
In Yugen, the actor Salma Hayek-Pinault represents Sophia The work investigates the idea of traversing non-material realms by journeying into and out of a material, 3D world where the artist explores the principle of alternatedimensional influence exerted upon the world of matter by multiple aspects of the ‘ unseen ’ Such forces can be of the ‘light’ as well as of the ‘dark’
“TECHNOLOGY AND ART MEET AND MERGE, CREATING IMAGES THAT EVOKE MYSTERY, WONDER, AND AMAZEMENT. ALMOST HYPNOTIC.”

NATIVITY
Fiennes’ exquisite, perpetually changing take on the classic Nativity scene
Though undeniably influenced by iconic Renaissance paintings, Nativity is inspired by Fiennes’ feeling limited in the moving image world The work is a chance to “challenge the conventions of moving image editing in which images and sequences are ‘fixed’ indefinitely ”
“What fascinated me most were all these Renaissance paintings of the Nativity…And what drew me in were things like the representation of women, the place of the mother figure, all of which have been lost in Christianity. The pull for me was to interpret anew the world of this iconic story by making use of this incredible technology.” – Martha Fiennes in The Guardian
“ENDLESSLY COMPLEX, GENERATIVE, AND CODED IN A MYSTICAL BEAUTY—IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT IN THIS DIGITAL ARTWORK—NATIVITY IS THE ZENITH OF THE AS-OF-YET UNPARALLELED SLOIMAGE TECHNOLOGY.”
"FIENNES’S 'NATIVITY’ GIVES HOLINESS THE HITECH TREATMENT."
