WELCOME Welcome (finally) back to The Coronet Theatre for our new Autumn/Winter 2021 programme.

Amos Gitai returns to The Coronet with his acclaimed production of Yitzhak Rabin: Chronicle of an Assassination following a sell-out run at the Théâtre de la Ville. We are excited to present Le Petit Chaperon Rouge by the internationally renowned Joël Pommerat, as well as the Dutch puppet show Blind by the Duda Paiva Company. Film screenings from Ballet Black, HOME Manchester and Ragged Art will feature throughout the season.

The last year has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging in our industries’ history, but we are proud to say that The Coronet Theatre is back, and is once again presenting unique work that entertains, challenges and inspires. Despite the current global context, our core artistic principles remain the same; we are an outward-looking, internationally focused theatre that commits to presenting exceptional artists from across the globe. We know that this spirit of positive international collaboration is needed now more than ever.

The new presentation of Our Lives by Ben Okri will be joined by the Korean Music Festival, the Coronet Theatre Jazz Festival curated by Byron Wallen, and an exceptional season of poetry.

THE SPIRIT OF PAINTING Mysteriously landing on the cupola of The Coronet Theatre during the quiet of a global pandemic, a lonely figure poses in the adlocutio stance of an Emperor in ancient Rome addressing his troops.

Contra to this heroic posture, this figure portrays the artist in his studio overalls painting the sky with a paintbrush instead of sword, palette as shield.

Originally designed to have a sculpture of Mercury on the roof of the theatre, now the messenger God of commerce has become a prophetic painter of our current hubris.

‘I imagined being ‘in’ the sky, I thought of an oversized paint splattered stepladder on the roof, to help a giant decorator to paint the clouds or change the earth’s light bulb (sun)’ Gavin Turk Gavin Turk uses art historical referencing as a material to question art itself. This figure takes its form from Alfred Drury’s sculpture of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a familiar iconic statue grandstanding in the courtyard of The Royal Academy. Where the Drury sculpture portrays the first president of the RA as a member of the establishment, this contemporary classic presents the artist as artisanal workman. At this time of fierce debate around public sculpture this portrait brings a new provocation to the conversation.

The Coronet Theatre presents an enlightening, cathartic and acerbic new play about identity, maturity and reconciliation from influential playwright Robert Holman, starring Penny Downie, Sylvestra Le Touzel, Matthew Tennyson and Iniki Mariano, and directed by Geraldine Alexander.

Sisters Dolly and Esther grow up in ultra-conservative Harrogate in the ‘60s. 50 years later, following the death of their mother, Dolly comes to stay with Esther – now a successful novelist and living in Little Venice with her younger, inscrutable lodger, Jude. The three go to Norway to meet the rock star grandfather Jude has only ever heard about. Instead, he meets Anila who changes his world. To make a new future these four people will have to be honest, heal old wounds and two sisters learn to laugh together again.

Robert Holman is a stalwart of British theatre, with his extensive writing career including commissions from The Royal Court, the Bush and the RSC. His play A Breakfast of Eels was produced at The Coronet Theatre in 2015.

CHRONICLE OF AN ASSASSINATION

Film maker Amos Gitai returns to The Coronet Theatre with Yitzhak Rabin: Chronicle of an Assassination, a live performance based on his 2015 film Rabin, the Last Day, an investigation into the assassination in 1995 of the Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin, after a demonstration for peace and against violence in Tel-Aviv. The assassination cast a cold and brutal light on a dark and terrifying world—a world that made murder possible, which suddenly became apparent to a traumatised public.

Written by Amos Gitai and MarieJosé Sanselme, and drawn from the memories of Leah Rabin, the Prime Minister’s widow, the production is a fable performed by an exceptional cast of singers and musicians including Natalie Dessay. Four voices are brought together to create a recitative, “halfway between lament and lullaby,” to travel back through history and explore the incredible violence with which the nationalist forces fought the peace project, tearing Israel apart.

‘Listen closely with both eyes’: the spellbinding theatre of Joël Pommerat – The Guardian Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood) was the first of a trilogy of fairy tales adapted by French writer and director Joël Pommerat, and has been loved by audiences across the world. In this new interpretation, created for his young daughter to help her understand his work, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge is neglected by her mother and bravely faces the Big Bad Wolf on her own.

Pommerat’s version of this classic story uses a blend of powerful minimal stage design and perceptive performance to present a show with his trade mark distinctive atmosphere. To be enjoyed by children, as well as adults, as they address the desires, fears, loneliness and freedom experienced while growing up.

In this solo work Duda Paiva used foam puppets to draw on his childhood, during which he suffered an illness that blistered his body and left him temporarily blind. His surreal path to healing involved both shamanic and western medicine. BLIND transforms this experience into a metaphor about disability, rejection and resolution. It creates an in-time theatrical tapestry of dance, puppetry adaptations of Yoruba songs from a unique Afro-Brazilian subculture, and the driving forces of sound and light.

 ‘In Blind Duda Paiva dances with his demons... and adds an extra dimension to puppetry...powerful choreography and direction...strongly supported by soundscape and decor... beautiful puppets from grotesquely realistic to almost abstract...they remind you of portraits by Marlene Dumas.’

Originally from Brazil, Paiva also worked and studied in Japan and India, and, now established in Holland, has developed a new language in/style of global puppetry. ‘My work starts with a passion for movement. I believe our body is more than a combination of cells and atoms; they are filled with memories. We are full of stories. They only come out when the body starts to move. In my work I ask myself how, with the help of moving bodies, I can make clear what it means to be human.

A puppet is gender/culture/religion/ sexual preference-neutral. A quality that makes it possible to discuss taboos in a light-hearted way.’

OUR LIVES; AN INFINITE IMPROVISATION POETRY DANCING 21 — 23 Oct

A dance-drama about life as a constant improvisation, presented by Charlotte Jarvis, choreographer and dance artist, and Ben Okri, poet, novelist & playwright, and writer of The Coronet Theatre’s popular adaptation of The Outsider. They interweave their craft to create something new and intimate, political and meditative.

Poetry responds to movement and movement to poetry. Along the way they brush against history, injustice, the passions of motherhood, and the toughness of hope.

Each day brings new challenges, but dance and poetry respond with ritual and improvisation to the heart of the mystery of life.

Two artists engage this mystery.

This acclaimed production premiered at The Edinburgh Festival, Dance Base, 2019.

PAUL MULDOON

HOWDIE SKELP 20 Oct

We are delighted to host Paul Muldoon for the London launch of his fourteenth poetry collection, Howdie Skelp at The Coronet Theatre on 20 October 2021.

The poems in this collection include a nightmare-ish remake of The Waste Land, and a crown of sonnets in response to the early days of the Covid pandemic.

He was born in County Armagh in 1951 and now lives in New York. A former radio and television producer for the BBC in Belfast, he has been Oxford Professor of Poetry and has taught at Princeton University, where he is the Howard G. B. Clark Professor in the Humanities, for more than thirty years.

He is the recipient of many poetry prizes and awards including the Pulitzer prize in 2003 for Moy Sand and Gravel (2002), The TS Eliot Prize and The Griffin Prize.

Roger Rosenblatt, writing recently in The New York Times Book Review, described Paul Muldoon as “one of the great poets of the past hundred years, who can be everything in his poems – word-playful, lyrical, hilarious, melancholy. And angry.

Only Yeats before him could write with such measured fury.”

London’s Festival of Korean Music returns to the live stage, bringing incredible talents from Korea, and presenting outstanding performances in prestigious venues across London, including two events at The Coronet Theatre.

Before heading to WOMEX in Porto, Dongyang Gozupa joins the festival to perform in our auditorium for a double bill with Sinnoi, a quartet led by vocalist Bora Kim, ‘her flawless voice gliding between the purest of high tones and animalistic growls’ (Songlines).

An exciting night with a true mixture of fresh sounds and immaculately harmonized melodies.

SINNOI Sinnoi was formed by Bora Kim, who mastered the Gyeonggi folk songs and Korean classical court music, and by Lee Wonsool, who has a unique presence in the domestic jazz scene. In a minimalist composition, Sinnoi opens a new musical horizon beyond the boundaries of each musician through the musical background of both musicians as well as their rich and deep musical interplay with improvised and delicate exchange.

A unique presence on the jazz scene, Sinnoi has recently teamed up with new members – the legendary geomungo player Jeong-seok Lee from Geomungo Factory who stormed the first edition of the K-Music Festival, and Go Dam; an electronic ambient sound artist and producer. Pursuing a minimalist composition with rich, deep musical interplay of improvised and delicate exchanges, the band delivers new styles that transcend genres and musical ages.

Pansori, jazz, and modern electronic forces combine to create a truly outstanding and original sound.

DONGYANG GOZUPA In a hard-hitting combination of progressive, post-rock and the psychedelic possibilities of the yanggeum (Korean metal-stringed zither), the name Dongyang Gozupa translates as ‘eastern high frequency’, providing a clue to their music – a trail-blazing, percussiondriven sound with the yanggeum at its centre.

For fans of Jambinai, the trio consists of bassist Minhui Ham, yanggeum player Eunhwa Yun, and award-winning percussionist Dohyuk Jang, who performed at K-Music 2016 with one of Korea’s biggest rock bands Danpyunsun & The Sailors. Dongyang Gozupa’s recent successes include being featured at PAMS (Performing Arts Market in Seoul), Seoul Music Week and WOMEX.

Highly acclaimed poet, playwright and author Glyn Maxwell reads poetry at The Coronet Theatre including from his latest collection How The Hell Are You, which was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize 2021. Glyn has given readings at The Coronet Theatre a number of times and his stage adaptation of Karen Blixen’s Babette’s Feast premiered here in 2017.

IMTIAZ DHARKER 09 Dec

Imtiaz reads a selection of poems from her six collections, mainly the last two, Over the Moon and Luck is the Hook and as well as some unpublished new poems.

Imtiaz Dharker is a poet, artist and video film maker, awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. She has been Poet in Residence at Cambridge University Library and worked on several projects across art forms in Leeds, Newcastle and Hull as well as the Archives of St Paul’s Cathedral. Her six collections include Over the Moon and the latest, Luck is the Hook, with poems featured on radio, television, the London Underground and Mumbai buses. She has had eleven solo exhibitions of drawings and scripts and directs video films, many of them for non-government organisations working in the area of shelter, education and health for women and children in India.

POETRY AND WAR FROM HOMER TO TODAY 14 Nov

The founding poems of Western literature are war poems: the Psalms of David and Homer’s Iliad. The first concerns war’s impression on the human spirit; the second is a memorial to the glorious deeds and names of those who fought. War has inspired poetry and war poetry has inspired war.

Drawing on this rich tradition, from the fields of Troy to the Gulf, and in the company, as ever, of wonderful readers, this latest Dead Poets Live show marks this year’s Remembrance Day by considering the art of war and the art of poetry, and what changes in the one have meant for the other.

Join Ballet Black for their cinematic debut, Eightfold, a film unprecedented in its radical use of light, film and drone technology with some of the most diverse and exciting choreographic talent from around the world and performed by the multi-award winning Ballet Black.

Featuring narration written by Natasha Gordon and voiced by Ballet Black’s Patron, Thandiwe Newton, Eightfold is an extraordinary dance film created at an extraordinary time.

Both film screenings will feature a post-show discussion with Ballet Black Artistic Director, Cassa Pancho, and several members of the artistic team.

R A G G E D ART EVENT 27 Oct

In Spring 2021, in the depths of the darkest lockdown, a group of visual artists created "Through which the light passes”, an exhibition of wall painting, photographs, sculptural interventions, films and live performances at the Ragged School Museum in Mile End. The show was the artists’ varied responses to the evocative spaces of the museum, which once housed Doctor Bernardo’s school for the poorest children of Victorian London. The sublimation of light from darkness was at the core of the exhibition.

In this new iteration at The Coronet Theatre - which also resonates so powerfully with London’s layered history - we search and listen to the echoes of a time past from a suspended present.

Artists: Hélène Binet, Yong Min Cho, Alexandre da Cunha, Oona Grimes, Jefford Horrigan, Liliane Lijn, Kathy MacCarthy, Antoni Malinowski, Katrina Palmer.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH HOME MANCHESTER 12 Nov

The Earth Asleep is a meditative documentary by visual artist Clara Casian about one of the most powerful earthquakes and tsunami ever recorded, original music by composer Robin Richards.

The Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 killed over 15,000 people and caused a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant - the worst such incident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Casian and Richards travelled to Otsuchi in remote North-East Japan to document and observe the experiences of local residents. From those who lost their homes and fled in cars as the waves surged behind, to the present-day pilgrims who journey to a remote phone booth to speak to the silent spirits of those who have passed on.

The haunting travelogue addresses the ways in which our exposure to extreme live trauma in the form of rolling news and citizen reportage has resulted in an inability to process grief at a manageable, human scale.

J A Z Z FESTIVAL BYRON WALLEN 13 – 18 Dec (actual dates TBC)

Byron Wallen presents The Coronet Theatre Jazz Festival.

Wallen has received the BBC Jazz Innovation award (2003) and has been nominated several times for the MOBO award. In 2017 he received the coveted Paul Hamlyn Award. In 2020 his band Four Corners was nominated for the best band category at the Parlimentary Jazz Awards.

Byron Wallen was raised in a musical family and as a child studied classical piano, euphonium, trumpet, flute and drums. In the mid 1980’s the trumpet became Wallen’s primary instrument of choice.

Wallen’s first major work, Tarot Suite, (1994) was inspired by a love of mythology and symbolism, which reflected the archetypal journey of human life through an interdisciplinary pan-continental approach.

Widely recognised as a seminal figure in Jazz, Wallen is an acclaimed writer and producer whose original scores have been commissioned by the Science Museum; PRS, The BBC, Jerwood Foundation, Southbank Centre, National Theatre, Arts Council, FIFA and Sage Gateshead. He has also composed soundscapes for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros and Game of Thrones.
