It gives me pleasure to welcome our many visitors and friends to this our fourteenth Cork International Film Festival. Since its beginning in 1956. the Cork Film Festival ha carved an important niche for itself in the World of Cinema , and is now one of the very few Festivals which are officially recognised by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations .
We do not think it idle to claim that our visitor di scover a distinctive character and atmosphere in Cork. and that they reali se how sincere is our ' Cead Mile Faitte ·. We pledge ourselves, for one thing. not to let that particular image tarnish through the casualne s that over-familiarity can bring. Cork's reputation for friendliness. hospitality. an unpretentious air of enjoyment and the atmosphere of earnest public interest in the cinema is what we cherish , and what we guarantee when we first welcome our guest s in a way that we hope makes them feel truly at home in o ur midst.
The object of the Festival itself is to foster popular interest in film, and in the short film in particular We are now living in the full tide of a great electronic revolution which has made the visual media more important criteria of ·reality· than even print We no longer live in ' the pale of words ' alone, and it is regrettable that educationalists and academic pay s uch little attention to the effect of such media on the imaginative life of ociety. even a s providing the diversion which the human condition demand s.
To attract the best short film s we have competitions in the following categoric I. GENERAL l!IIT EREST . 2. ANIMATED OR CARTOO . 3. FILMS ON ART
In recent year we have added a new category wh i h we con ider to be of t he highe t i m portance, an d that i for SHORT F 1cr10 FILMS not exceeding 4. 000 feet. The purp o e of thi latter category is to o ffer encouragement and a howca e fo r the yo u ng fil m -m aker
