A Tribute to Jean Benoit-Levy

JEAN BENOIT-LEVY : HU MAN IST AND CRAFTSMAN

IT WAS thro ugh the ioftuence of his uncle, Edm ond Be noit-Levy. a scholar a nd pioneer in the film industry. and the author of some remarkable works of literary c riticism, that Jean Benoit-Levy was initiated into the cine ma. From the o utset his inventive and inquiring mind led him to become absorbed in the many face ts of cinematographic c rea tion : productio n d irection editing. In 1928 he fou nded a production unit for whic h he directed many scientific and c ultural d ocumen taries The distinctive style which characterized these certainly contr.buted to the general e nric hment of mind and the broadening of culture . It was a quality wh ich Jean Benoit-Levy demonstrated thro ughout his caree r. His human awareness as a directo r, however. led him to make a number o f imponant fictional film s focussed on the human situation . and revealing a dee p psycho logical s ignificance During the era of silent films. he dis tinguis hed himself by bringing to the screen s uc h film s as A mes d ' Enfa11ts and Peau de Peche in w hich he displays a n extremely skilful technique and. above all. a vast knowledge of c hild psychology.

Fro m 1930 o nwards. Jean Benoh levy devoted his efforts to the science of film technology and the making of s pectacular films. A true documentaris t. he pro jected himself into the Fine Arts (music. dancing. painting) and the professions: a man o f t he c inema be bro ught to life many mas terpieces deserving of the highest me rit a lmost all of which have become classics of the French screen: La Maternell e. Hile11e. ltto, La Mort Du Cyg,w. Altit ude 3200. He was. mo reover. one of the fi rst to make films o f value in medical and s urgical llelds Gripped by the huma n scene, he was fascina• ted by those a spects o f it which co uld be e xpressed th~ough the medium of the cinema Not conte nt merely w ith t he ' prac tice' of his an he is the author of the extremely ins tructjve Les Grattdes Missiom.· Du Ci11e:11a. published in Canada. His passion for teaching took him t o the United States where he was prnfessor a nd lecturer before tak_ing on the management of the Audio-Visual services of the Un ited Na tions in 1946. After his return to France. Jean Be noit-Levy becam.: the chief delegate t o the Internat ional Council of Cinema and Television, an organization which he had helped t o fo und

Jean Benoit-Levy once wrote that ..the great mission of the cinema is simply th i~: to educate.·· He lived up to this ideal thro ugho ut his e ntire life.
