letter from the editors The beginning of the school year marks a fresh start. Whatever party fouls, bad grades and/or dining hall mishaps were committed in the spring are swept under the rug (well, theoretically). This fresh start not only applies to students, but also to extracurricular activities.

With a transition in leaders (shout out to Ted Nehrbas and Lily Siff!), fall was the perfect time for The Continental to reevaluate its place on campus. We started this process by addressing the inconsistencies of the magazine in both content and design. We’ll spare you the nitty-gritty details, but after much analysis, we concluded that The Continental lacked cohesion.

With any publication, there exists a tension between sticking to tradition and updating based on the time and that publication’s needs. In order to do the latter without losing the former, we located our strengths and diagnosed our weaknesses. At the risk of complete failure, we’ve made bold changes – systematically, editorially and aesthetically – in order to further strengthen the magazine.

First, we assembled an entirely new staff that represents every grade, as well as a wide range of communities at Hamilton. Our editors, writers and photographers were not only extremely supportive during The Continental’s transition, but also excited about the changes. They worked tirelessly to see them through.

Editorially, we reorganized the sequence of the magazine. By eliminating Society and adding Entertainment, we attempted to further distinguish each section – hoping to reestablish their identities. Furthermore, we decided it was important for The Continental to reach beyond its inner circle. We generated an article list with a range in style and tone, from Carrie and Jessye’s Campus Safety endeavors (page 4) to Risa Nagel’s reflections on being an American abroad (page 24).

Our Creative Director, Sarah Moore ’16, assumed a number of new responsibilities this semester. Overseeing everything from the cover to the page numbers, we gave Moore the liberty to redesign the magazine. You’ll notice we’ve taken on a new visual identity with an emphasis on photography, which was spearheaded by Ben Balick ’16. Every line is deliberately placed and every photo meticulously edited.

Finally, this thirst for change inspired our cover article (page 14), which explores the relationship between Hamilton publications and the student body. While it is not only an important piece for the campus, it also holds a personal significance for The Continental during this change. It has helped us understand in what ways we must adapt in order to stay relevant.

On that note, while we’re still ironing out the kinks, we’re proud to release a new generation of The Continental and hope reading it brings you as much pleasure as making it did.

Unfortunately, we’re neither. Hi, we’re Carrie and Jessye. You might know us from our hit column “Thumbs Up Thumbs Down” in the Spec, or from our hit and run.

With an interest in the brotherhood of Greek life but a fear of binge drinking, hazing, and The Breakaway Lounge, we weren’t sure where to turn. As Campo broke up a rowdy party we were near (but not at, of course), we realized our fun lies within ruining someone else’s fun. For two gals who love rules, point systems, and parking citations, we knew we had to pledge KPO: Kampus Police Officers.

We spent the whole rush season trying to prove our worthiness. With the officers, we attended wine and cheese events, crawls, and darties, all of which we got to see shut down. Awesome!

Then, one fateful night, we both received calls from an upset sounding Francis Manfredo. Our thoughts started racing: were we about to receive points for being too close to a tapestry? He told us to climb into the Campo cars waiting for us outside of our dorms. We were safely buckled into the backseat and transported at exactly the speed limit to the Campus Safety HQ. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our future brothers with their flashlights flickering to set the ambiance, in lieu of open flame. There we received our official bids and our pledge names: Officer Carrie and Officer Jessye.

After the best night of our lives, the hard work began. Our pledging tasks were neither simple nor easy, but we knew that the friendship of twenty middle-aged men would make all the late night lineups worth it.

Here were some of our tasks: • Find 30 underage drinkers per weekend night • Determine whether cigarettes contain drugs or tobacco based only on sight • Sniff out a fake ID through a Barbour jacket • Get personalized official KPO haircuts from Officer Wayne Gentile • Eat 3 well-balanced meals a day • Know every officer’s full name, age, and year he started taking heartburn medication • Memorize all offenses that result in points • Role play honor court circumstances to estimate how many points someone will get before their trial even happens • Show kindness to one and all • Use a Ouija board to locate TDX Of course, even the most dedicated pledges mess up sometimes. There was the time that we suggested building a jail cell inside KPO HQ for anyone who was written up. Another time, we recommended staging a fake rager to catch partiers. We also attempted to prove our strength by challenging Officer Hollywood to an arm wrestling contest. All ideas were immediately vetoed on the grounds of being “immoral” and “a huge mistake.”

Toward the end of the process, we were invited to the annual Hamilton KPO and Kirkland Police Officers Mixer. Apparently, there’s been tension over the acronym for years. But after enjoying some salt potatoes and chicken riggies while watching Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood music video, scores were settled and lifelong friendships were formed. Shoutouts to our new buds Rich, Richie, and Big Richie down at Kirkland.

During our final drive around campus before they officially bequeathed us the keys to the cars and the college, we learned what KPO is all about: community, safety, and splitting a single Utica Club twenty-two ways at the end of a long hard week.

Dining Hall Stereotypes

It’s no secret that Hamilton’s numerous dining options attract different types of people. Commons generally entices athletes just looking to stuff their faces with whatever is offered. McEwen, on the other hand, is home to more “health conscious” individuals looking to spice up their lives with some gluten free options (typically in the form of an unknown bean patty that looks all sorts of appetizing). This article will delve deep into the individuals that frequent the two places to eat across campus, taking four stereotypes —meat loving football boy, gluten free, dairy free, paleo girl, hippie vegan, and someone who’s just sick of Common’s chicken — and their typical meals as examples.

Starting with our meat loving football boy, we have Bill Gordon ’18 (as you’ll quickly see a typical meal for Bill could in itself sustain a small village). A normal meal for Bill consists of four glasses of chocolate milk, a few double cheeseburgers, two pieces of chicken, a Caesar salad, a bowl of cereal, and a couple scoops of ice cream or a cookie or two on his way out of Commons. When asked what foods he avoids, Bill simply replied, “nothing really, I’m not that picky.” Bill did get a little nostalgic though, saying that he misses Ronnie’s eggs. As we all know, getting creative with your dining options is crucial, and Bill gave some insight into his creative process. Bill said, “I like to take the tortilla chips from the burrito station in Commons and make nachos in the microwave and then top them with rice, beans, and chicken.” As for his favorite place to eat on campus Bill expressed his love for the diner, something I’m sure most of us could agree on.

Taking a look at our gluten free, dairy free, paleo girl, we have Heather Tomkowicz ’18. If Bill represents one side of the Hamilton College meal spectrum, Heather is on the entirely opposite end. When asked about a typical meal, Heather said, “I usually just fill up my plate with lettuce and a bunch of vegetables. I’ll throw in some hard-boiled eggs as well to make sure I get enough protein. I really love the salad bars!” As for something she can’t go a day without, Heather professed her love for Sriracha sauce, saying she puts it on everything to spice up her meals. Heather also talked about how she likes to get creative by mixing a lot of different foods together to see what works well together.

And her favorite dining hall, if you haven’t already guessed, is… “McEwen, hands down.”

Meg Josephson ’18 is our choice for hippie vegan and Instagram celebrity (check out her food instagram @ withalmondbutterontop if you’re looking for some inspiration). When asked about an everyday dinner, Meg said, “a typical dinner for me at school is rice, potatoes, and a lot of veggies. When I’m home, I’ll make pizza, pasta, stir fry, curry, or sushi.” Meg made it clear that she stays away from meat, dairy, and eggs (all animal products). As for her favorite foods that she can’t live without, Meg expressed her love for sweet potatoes and bananas. If you look at her instagram, you’ll see that Meg gets creative by taking regular, popular foods (especially desserts) and turning them into vegan versions, saying it’s actually easier than you might think. Like Heather, Meg’s favorite dining hall is also McEwen.

Lastly, we have someone who’s just sick of Commons’ chicken,

something I’m sure all of us can identify with in one way or another — Natalie Klingher ’18. A typical dinner for Natalie includes “some cold cuts with some chips, sour cream, and cheese thrown on there from the taqueria, some pieces of lettuce from the salad bar, and a couple of tomatoes on top.

Then usually some cereal or pasta to postgame.”

When asked what she stays away from, Natalie replied, “I usually avoid the hotdogs and the bucket of onions next to them.” As for what she can’t live without, she felt very strongly that the bagels are a safe bet for every meal. Everyone knows that it is difficult to get creative and mix things up in Commons, but Natalie has some keen insight into doing so. “I usually add some salad dressing to my meals to mix it up and stay a little healthy.”

To avoid Commons’ chicken, she likes to eat at both Opus and the Diner; she remarks, “My favorite dining hall is Opus, even though it doesn’t really count as a dining hall, but I frequent both Opuses approximately three times a day. When I’m sick of Commons’ chicken, I go to the diner for a buff chicken sub with some fries, but if I’m trying to be healthy, I’ll get a chef salad with buff fingers and blue cheese and some salt and vinegar chips on the side.”

Hamilton is certainly home to a diverse group of individuals, which is reflected in the various dining options and the people who frequent them. Whether you’re an athlete, a vegan, or simply someone who’s sick of Common’s chicken, Hamilton has got you covered.

Are you a mutant?” These are a few examples of engaging all-campus email subject lines. While the subject-lines grab the attention of and inform the Hamilton community, they also clog up inboxes and detract from other all-campus emails, often the most important ones. All-campus emails are common at Hamilton, but are they necessary?

Pro: What’s a better way to reach out to the entire Hamilton community than with all-campus emails? These daily emails inform the community about the myriad of opportunities and events that develop students’ intellectual, spiritual, physical, and professional skills. They also allow the sender to quickly and efficiently reach the largest number of community members. If all-campus emails were banned, attendance at events on and off campus would drop because an essential element, awareness of the event, would be eliminated.

Even though most all-campus emails aren’t relevant to us personally, many engage students and have benefits.

Student organizations have long been a revered Hamilton feature that adds excitement and opportunities for involvement on campus. The best way to inform the community is through allcampus emails. When you send a catchy email about watching Scandal at Sadove, avid watchers and television-lovers know they have a place to watch and bond over the show, as well as a chance to meet new people. They have the ability to perpetuate what Hamilton prides itself on being, “a tight-knit community.”

Before writing emails off, it is important to understand how they might work 8

positively.

In addition, many all-campus emails have witty subject lines that are entertaining in their own right and spark amusing conversations. As explained by Alexander Popovic, writing all-campus emails “doubles as a solid creativity exercise away from normal tedious school work” and allows writers to “have a little fun while sending out the email.”

If those emails weren’t so catchy, you wouldn’t screenshot and send them to friends. Let’s be honest, we all thought Bundy parties were cancelled indefinitely and we all sent a screenshot to our groupchat with the caption “OMG wut?”

Those who complain about a cluttered inbox, full of what they consider “spam” mail, are unaware that Hamilton has a service to fix that. The Listserv “line limit” is available to help eliminate large graphics and attachments that slow down mail downloads. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, anyone can immediately unsubscribe from emails received from unwanted sources. In fact, all you need to do is address an email to listserv@listserv.hamilton.edu and in the body of the message type: Unsubscribe listname (replace listname with the name of the list from which you are unsubscribing).

Why isolate yourself from the multitude of opportunities Hamilton has to offer and the little humors that come from these emails? Does receiving ten or fifteen all-campus emails negatively impact your day? No, it just takes a second to delete those you don’t want to read!

Con: Do you really want to tick people off?

Send an all-campus email! They’ll be sure to slow everything down including: inboxes, phones, computers, and your

By Caroline Langan ‘18 brain. Not only that, but you’ll also make sure people miss important emails because they’re too busy trying to avoid the ones that don’t pertain to them.

Since we seem to receive at least fifteen all-campus emails a day (too many already), the last thing I want to see clogging up my inbox and slowing down my iPhone is an all-campus email titled “Free Chipotle.” For starters, don’t get my hopes up. Second, all-campus emails should be informative: telling me who, what, when, where, and why, in a brief, organized manner. The ListServ Policy says, “each message must have a subject line that is descriptive of the event”—does “Fall Break Shortened, Now Beginning Oct 17” relate to the Archery Club event?

No! Subject lines like these not only don’t make sense, but also suffer from overuse.

What once were witty subject lines have become repeated ideas, recognizable, and, quite frankly, “old.” Frustration with all-campus emails has produced “hate” mail responses as well as ridicule on social platforms, mainly Yik Yak. Finally, the annoyance of unwanted all-campus email is exacerbated by the “reply all” problem. Even if you quickly delete an all-campus email that is of no interest, you risk one of the recipients hitting “reply all,” which starts what I call a “replyallcalypse.” The “reply all” email is then followed by an “I’m sorry for replying all” email, which is then followed by a “Don’t worry, Tim!” email. The result is that you have now received the same unwanted email four times.

There seems to be little hope that allcampus emails will decrease so my advice would be to recognize the domain names of those who send these petty emails and use that delete button (and try not to miss anything important.)

WHAT’S UP WITH STUDENT ASSEMBLY

hile the weekly Student Assembly (SA) minutes may not sound like the most compelling read, the transcripts can be both funny and, at times, bizarre. SA attempts to tackle a wide variety of issues on campus and, as religious readers of the minutes will know, sometimes propose creative solutions (such as suggesting public shaming to discourage students from misbehaving on the Late-Night Jitney). The minutes at the beginning of this year, however, were more of a puzzle of how student organization funding, which should last the whole semester, disappeared within the first few weeks of the semester.

For the past four semesters, student organizations have been required to submit a budget proposal, and SA uses 80% of its budget, the Strategic Budget, to fund these groups. The other 20%, referred to as the Non-Strategic Budget, is meant for periodical use throughout the semester to fund more spontaneous events. Before this systematic division, clubs applied for funding whenever they needed it. “The problem was,” Student Assembly President, Andrew Fischer ‘17 explains, “that as money ran out we became more selective with the proposals.” A new dilemma came about this year, when many well meaning and well established clubs were unable to apply for Strategic Budget funding.

Two factors led to underfunding (or a complete lack of funding) of student organizations this year. One is the persistent problem of groups over-requesting for money, expecting SA to cut them down and to their desired level. This puts a burden on SA to discern where that level of funding lies; “We don’t know if we are cutting the fat or the meat” says Fischer ’17. Oftentimes this results in clubs sitting on money that will rollback to SA at the end of the semester, money that could have gone to funding other clubs. Yet, this became an even more substantial issue this year because many clubs missed out on Strategic Budget funding.

Several clubs did not complete the pre-requisites to apply for funding, such as basic leader training and other necessary deadlines, so by the time they could properly request funding, the Strategic Budget, 80% of the money, was gone. “Of course, I’d love to say, ‘no, you missed the deadline and we can’t fund you this semester,’” Fischer says, half laughing, “but most of these were good clubs who just made a mistake, so my E-board and I agreed to use the Non-Strategic 10

Budget.” This money, however, was never intended to fully fund student organizations for a semester, but rather just to support clubs finding themselves in the need of more money and spontaneous events. Before the end of September, SA has spent the entirety of its budget, Strategic and non-Strategic, for the semester.

The silver lining can be found in the fact that funds from the fall will rollover into the spring, and all the extra money that certain clubs are sitting on will go towards spring funding. “Last year we had enough extra to spend $15,000 on Class and Charter Day,” Andrew Fischer boasts. Next semester, there should be no issue in funding, he assures me, hopeful that this past fall will remind student organizations of the importance of meeting deadlines on time.

drive up Campus Road can mean many things: a start to a new semester, returning from a night out with friends, or hurrying back for class. But for eight young men, this drive means a world of opportunity.

Down the road from the Bristol Center and Admissions is the ABC house, located at 3989 Campus Road. ABC, which stands for A Better Chance, is a national program founded in 1962 at Dartmouth College that aims to prepare talented high school students of color for college and beyond.

The program attracts students from inner cities across the country where they have limited higher educational opportunities, and places them into high schools with stronger academic and extracurricular programs. The Clinton chapter of ABC is composed of eight young men who attend Clinton High School and live in a house on Hamilton College’s campus. Since 1972, the Clinton and Hamilton communities have opened their hearts and homes as teachers, mentors, host families, and especially as friends to the ABC scholars. Over the years, these incredible young men have contributed their talents and perspectives both inside and outside the classroom. This year, there are two returning seniors, one

an academic level as well as a personal level. In addition to academic enrichment, Hamilton students are encouraged to spend time with the ABC students outside the classroom setting. This year, Hamilton students will join the young men to cook a Thanksgiving dinner in early November.

A

long with the Class of 2019, Hamilton welcomed a new

community this fall—birds! This past summer, Hamilton demolished 3994 Campus Road and in the residence hall’s place built an aviary for the Biology Department.

Hamilton’s aviary provides an on-campus wildlife laboratory available to all students for in-class instruction and research opportunities. Assistant Professor of Biology Andrea Townsend plans to use the aviary in upcoming years to continue her behavioral and pathological research on crow populations.

The aviary has a simple design, but is specially and effectively structured for research purposes. In individual living units, each bird has a nesting box, water feature, and heater to regulate body temperature.

Once Townsend secures licenses to capture crows, students and researchers will observe the birds in a heated classroom adjacent to the living units. Townsend hopes to have crows in the aviary by this spring. In the meantime, the aviary will be home to European starlings.

“Like crows, they are a really smart, very social species of bird,” Townsend explains. “They are also an invasive species and considered a pest at local dairies, so we will be working with these birds as part of labs this fall.”

Townsend joined Hamilton’s faculty in fall of 2014.

She received her Ph.D. in behavioral and disease ecology from Cornell University. There, Townsend studied the relationship between inbreeding and the prevalence of West Nile disease in crow populations. Crows mate for life and, due to their social structure, often with a not-so-distant relative. Unsurprisingly, Townsend observed that inbred crows acquired disease far more frequently than non-inbred crows. At Hamilton, Townsend continues to research the effects of inbreeding on crow populations, but with a focus on urbanization.

At the aviary, Townsend will tag crows to study their migratory patterns through urban and rural areas. The project surveys crow populations in Sacramento Valley, California and Upstate New York. Hamilton’s new aviary will be the home base for research on the east coast, while Townsend’s colleagues at the University of California, San Diego will monitor populations on the west coast.

With the addition of the aviary, Hamilton students have the unique opportunity to observe and shadow Townsend’s research. Seniors Jessica Sofen, Blaire Frett, and Marian Eckerman spent last summer in Clinton assisting Professor Townsend. They tagged crows and observed birds’ behavior. Outside of Townsend’s research, Hamilton students have the opportunity develop their own hands-on research projects. Townsend remarks, “There are an enormous number of potential behavioral experiments that we could try, and my idea is to carry out a series of these experiments with my classes, summer students, and senior project students each semester.” In years past, Townsend has advised Rachel Landman ’15 and McKenna Kelly ‘15 on their senior theses. Landman studied the effect of crows’ neophobia of objects in urban settings, while Kelly analyzed feces of American crows in proximity to intensive care units.

This fall will mark the first ecology class able to work in the aviary. “Right now, they are each researching, designing, and proposing different experiments that we could try,” said Townsend. Students have come up with a number of interesting ideas so far. “Some of the projects that they have proposed include exploration of their ability to use tools, testing their degree of social learning, and understanding the extent to which they can distinguish human faces and voices.

As a class, we are going to decide on one experiment to carry out this semester.” Hamilton is excited about the addition of its new aviary, an incredible resource for a campus of its size.

“How many Hamilton publications can you name?”

On Monday afternoon, I posted up in Kirner-Johnson to probe students about Hamilton publications in order to gain insight into student readership. “How many Hamilton publications can you name?” was the first question I asked.

The majority of interviewees responded with an initial, “umm…” before racking their brain for a few newspapers and magazines that they were pretty sure their friends worked on. Six was the average number of Hamilton publications students could name.

There are fifteen (see end of article).

Not only were students unable to list more than half of Hamilton’s publications, but it also became clear that there were only five that were widely known. The most common answers were: The Spectator, The Daily Bull, The Duel Observer, The Enquiry and The Topical. Depending on the interviewee and their interest, other publications received a brief moment of fame before floating back into the abyss.

Why is it that students don’t seem to know the bulk of Hamilton publications?

If you compare the ones listed above, though extraordinarily different in content, they all have one thing in common: they come out at least once a week.

“I know we have a style magazine and a travel magazine,” said freshman Julia Gorlovetskaya, “but I haven’t seen them yet.” She went on to explain that the only reason she knows these other publications exist is through the emails they send.

She’s right. Only seven of the fifteen publications have been released this fall. The rest are published between one and four times a year, which may have to do with why they were forgotten.

“The publication timeline is a real concern,” said Senior and Media Board Chair, Brian Sobotko, “but it also isn’t possible for some of them to publish more than they do.”

While sheer quantity is a reason publications aren’t well known, there is also a general lack of interest. Whether or not publications come out once a week or once a year, students aren’t choosing to interact with them.

“Most people I know aren’t engaged in reading [on campus publications],” explained Senior Bryon Banman, “so I don’t feel like I need to be engaged.”

When students are engaging, it is for reasons of convenience, controversy or a direct personal interest.

“I don’t seek [Hamilton publications] out,” Senior, Abby Quirk said about her reading habits, “but if it’s placed on a table in front of me – on a table where I am – I’ll read it.” When interviewed, every student said they interacted with publications most frequently at dining halls.

“I read The Bull and The Topical even though they’re the least substantial.

They’re the ones at the dining hall tables.”

Banman explains. “When I’m in KJ, I’m most likely doing work.”

It’s clear that convenience and location play a huge role in readership. As Banman alluded to, students rarely peruse publications in workspaces. So what drives students to pick up publications outside of the dining hall?

Sophomore Michael Mac BolsterHoughton remarks that he tends to pick up a publication if someone has asked him, “Did you hear about X article in X place?” His motivation is driven by outside sources, not necessarily the publication itself. Nodding in agreement, Alec Neal added point blank, “I usually only read about articles that are controversial.”

Over the course of last year, however, only a handful of articles were considered controversial. In 2013, The Duel Observer released a satirical article about tenure, which caused a stir amongst faculty members and students due to its delicate subject matter.

It’s always a risk to write something controversial, however, “controversial articles can drive campus dialogue in ways that are valuable – even if you disagree with them,” says Sobotko.

For some, controversy is not the only pull.

Gorlovetskaya explains that she reads publications that bear a direct relevance to her interests. “I read publications when I’m looking for something. To confirm gossip or if I want information about a Hamilton event, like the fall concert.” She finished her thought with a very poignant observation.

THE BREAKDOWN The Green Apple Hamilton’s feminist publication, The Green Apple, according to Hamilton’s website, “seek[s] to provide a space in which each and every Hamilton student, regardless of race, gender sexuality, etc., feels he/ she can safely express his/her thoughts and both discover his/her own voice and inspire others to do so as well.” The Green Apple accepts a variety creative – through prose, poetry and visual art. All articles are anonymous. The Green Apple has a blog that is updated weekly and will have a small, print publication by the end of the semester.

time they want to put into being involved.”

Should we entertain Gorlovetskaya’s notion or are there other ways people can be informed on campus?

Quirk is self aware of the way she interacts (or doesn’t) with publications. Her habits are practical. “I don’t have a good reason [for not reading most publications], but I feel up to date with things going on on-campus without having to read them.

With social media, Yik Yak and talking to friends, I’ve usually already heard the information” before it is published.

Most information we receive outside of Hamilton is “snackable.” Think, The Skim, Buzzfeed and Apple’s newest installment News. Students don’t have a desire to read long articles, especially when they can get most of their information from social media, friends and emails. How do we increase the presence of publications amongst students?

While, for Gorlovetskaya, The Daily Bull’s signature yellow and The Duel Observer’s muted blue “stick out the most” amongst the other publications, for Quirk, “you get used to the blue, yellow and beige. If there was something new,” she continued, “I would be more likely to read it.”

The difference between the interests of Freshman Gorlovetskaya and Senior Quirk proves that, over time, students’ curiosity in publications declines as a direct result of familiarity. The magnetic pull of a publication weakens the more you encounter it and the less it is changed, which leads me to question how often publications should update.

“If publications were to change their color every now and then, that could be something,” said Sobotko, “but I don’t know if a permanent change would necessarily have beneficial effects.”

So far, the answer to increasing readership remains a mystery. Readership appears to occur on a case-to-case basis. Whether students are reading because they’re bored in McEwen, looking for gossip or seeking out a particular article of interest, it’s safe to say that there aren’t many dedicated readers. If Hamilton wants to be an informed community, school publications must assume a more prominent role in student life. The specific reasons are not clear, but whether the publications are inaccessible or students have been unwilling to read the work of their peers, there is clearly a disconnect between the publications and their audience. the continental | fall 2015

Routes is the newest publication on campus. The goal of the magazine is to share off-campus experiences, local and international, of Hamilton students with the community on-campus. The intention behind Routes is far greater than communicating Juniors experiences abroad and/or trips over the summer. Debra Boutin: Guidance by Land and Sea

Mathematics Professor Debra Boutin grew up in Massachusetts with an aspiration to serve her country. During her childhood, she was stirred by 1940s-era movies and their exhilarating depictions of the military. She was also influenced by an aunt who worked for the Navy in Washington, D.C. during World War II. During her junior year of high school, Boutin began to seriously think about joining the United States Navy.

When she made her decision to join, her mother was on board, while her father reluctantly agreed. During her senior year of high school, she found her options to be limited. At the time, there were few jobs women were allowed to do in the Navy. Boutin was placed on the waiting list of every recruitment center she called.

Finally, in July of 1975, Boutin got the call

to attend boot camp in Orlando, Florida.

She found basic training to be difficult and demanding; she was the youngest of her group and was disliked by a superior.

However, she found her experience in boot camp to be useful when she entered the naval fleet.

During her four years of active duty, Professor Boutin learned a lot about leadership and how to adapt to new jobs.

She began as a seaman apprentice and later retired as a Chief Petty Officer. She said her experience as a Chief taught her a great deal, describing the position as “middle management but with a lot more respect.” Officers came to her when issues arose and she had to encourage and support them. Her time in the Navy introduced her to a variety of people from all over the United States. She connected

with people she never would have met otherwise, and built strong bonds with the people she worked with. After she retired from service, she found that the experience of the Navy offered context for dealing with difficult professional relationships. “I no longer have a ‘chain of command,’ but I try to incorporate the ideas of protecting and encouraging the people, including students, with whom I work,” she said. At Hamilton, she continues to give guidance by mentoring new faculty, undergraduates, and graduates. “I completed my Ph.D., went out into the mathematical ‘fleet,’ and have done pretty well,” she said. Her motivation and endurance have served her well.

THE CHANGE On August 18th, 2015 the Hill was awash with excitement, nervousness, and freshman. The class of 2019 is the first class to be required to participate in “Adventure Trips,” a group of orientation programs that aim to equip all students with the tools and knowledge needed to make the adjustment from high school to college. In previous years, students could either opt to participate in Adirondack Adventure (AA), Outreach Adventure (OA), or, as of 2014, Exploration Adventure (XA), or forgo the program entirely. AA trips took to the Adirondacks for hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, and sea kayaking, while OA trips headed to a variety of locations in the greater-Utica area to volunteer students’ time and skills to the community.

In its pioneering year, XA trips varied from beekeeping, to cycling, to a trip called “Finding Your Inner Lorax”, in which students visited “multiple facilities and projects that impact the local environment and whose efforts increase sustainability in various ways.”

REACTIONS The newest iteration of Hamilton’s orientation process seems to have been a huge success. Dan Snyder, an Adirondack Adventure student-intern, said that this year’s program “involved a lot of new and unfamiliar moving parts,” especially when it came to setting up the relatively new XA trips.

Snyder considers the shorter length of the on-campus portion of orientation a “positive change” because in years past, orientation had felt “drawn out, especially for students who had already done a pre-orientation trip.” Georgia Miller, a member of the class of 2019, really enjoyed her orientation trip. She thinks that making orientation required was smart because she “knew that the entire class was going through the same thing,” which helped people relate to each other. The addition of XA to the preexisting AA and OA options also makes the program diverse enough to accommodate a variety of interests.

With so many options, there is no good reason for students not to want to participate. I have not met any freshman students who are bitter about the required orientation programs. On the other hand, I can rattle off a whole list of upperclassmen who wish they had participated in one of the programs.

Crazy for Color:

Thoughts on Today’s Colored Hair Trend

By Emily Fisher ‘16 Last year, I experienced a strange impulse to color my hair. Now, this was not your run-of-the-mill “a few shades, lighter, brighter, what have you” impulse, but rather an urge to have blue hair. Specifically, I wanted my hair to be some conglomeration of mermaid, flower child, rocker chic, and New York Fashion Week blue hair.

I spent several months with this idea brewing in the back of my mind until one day, I bit the bullet and made an appointment to have it “dip-dyed” at a salon. My feelings about my new blue hair fluctuated on a moment-tomoment basis; I simultaneously loved and hated it.

Several months and copious amounts of deep conditioner later, the blue was gone. I realize that caring about my hair color at all was pretty unnecessary, but at the same time I’m proud of myself for testing the (blue) waters. At a point when my life was beginning to take an undeniably serious turn (toward the reality of the career world), I reclaimed a glimmer of spontaneity.

The history of color-dyed hair began in 1863, when an English professor named William Henry Perkin created the first synthesized dye out of coal tar. From Perkin’s findings, August Wilhelm von Hoffmann derived paraphenylenediamine, or PPD, which is the basis for most hair dyes today. French chemist Eugene Schueller was the first 20

to bottle commercial hair dye, which he called Aureole (and subsequently, L’Oréal).

Unusual colors have ebbed and flowed in and out of style over the years, flaring up during the punk movement of the late ‘70s as well as ‘90s grunge, the bubblegum vibe of bright millennial hair, and they are now coming up again with the pastel bohemian strands all over Pinterest today. Oddball color is nothing new, though. Take Marie Antoinette, who has remained in the pop culture landscape for centuries for her daring style and fashion choices during her reign as queen in 18th century France. Despite Marie Antoinette’s meeting with the guillotine, her outrageous poof and extensive use of pastel hair powder lives on. Today, the options are endless. Colored hair connoisseurs can pick up temporary hair chalk at CVS, order custom colored extensions from “Kylie Hair Kouture,” or go all-in with permanent dyes of any shade imaginable.

Whether today’s colored hair movement springs from celebrity inspiration, blogger trends, personal expression, or economic anxieties (as some fashion writers posit), there’s no doubt that it adds some much-needed variety to the usual pool of brown, red, black, and blonde. Even if you decide to stay on the sidelines for this particular trend (I’m right there with you at this point), it’s definitely fun to watch.

Wellness Classes

By Anna Rich ‘18 With an increasing attention to wellness, particularly on college campuses, Hamilton’s Wellness Program is more relevant than ever before. According to Hamilton’s website, “The Hamilton College Wellness Program provides information, educational opportunities and a wide range of activities designed to promote personal health and fitness.” This comprehensive program offers various sessions to promote wellness in our population for both students and faculty. While the program boasts offerings of screenings, flu shots, and wellness coaching sessions, the fitness classes and lecture series are the aspects of the program most geared towards students.

The Wellness Program offers a range of FItness classes that hit upon different interests.

Currently, the program offers Tai Chi, Pilates, Learn to Swim Better, Noon Yoga, and Power Yoga. The most popular classes amongst students are Noon Yoga and Power Yoga. While practicing yoga has obvious health benefits, the Wellness Program offers these classes at convenient times: noon in the dance studio and 4:30pm in the multipurpose room in the Athletic Center. Student can easily work these classes into their schedules.

While the other classes tend to lean towards faculty enrollment, students are welcome to participate, as well.

These classes are not like other PE classes; they are offered for the fitness and recreation of the college and attendance is not mandatory. Students and faculty alike

choose to enroll for the sake of their overall fitness and wellness.

In addition to merely getting their exercise in, students enjoy taking these classes. Lily Capstick ’18 has taken Pilates and according to her, “The environment is totally friendly, so even when I fail at everything I still love the class and the exercise. It’s fast paced but that’s the fun part.” Samantha Donohue ’18 has also enjoyed the numerous classes she’s taken: “I took Cardiokick, Body Bar with Step, and Spinning last year. They were all great, especially spinning. I took spinning as a gym class and my teacher told us that her husband taught it as a wellness class Wednesday evenings and that he had extra space in his class. I went a few times with my friend and it was a great workout! The Cardiokick and Body Bar classes were fun, too. I always got a kick out of those because I was always the only student so it was me and Hamilton employees.” Signing up for a class with a friend or two would definitely be a fun and different way to exercise just once a week.

Next semester, the program will likely bring spinning classes back into the mix; the classes offered vary semester by semester. While mental health is critical to overall wellness, physical health is key factor, as well. These classes are fun ways to explore fitness in a welcoming and low-stress setting and as the program continues to expand and options increase, everybody should be able to find a class that appeals to them.

Jakob Martin Kraft ‘17 Annie Whitehurst ‘16

Although we may inhabit a small community in rural New York, Hamilton itself is quite the fashion hub.

Students from all parts of the country and world bring their unique sense of style to campus. The runway that is Martin’s Way features everything from street style get-ups to more timeless looks.

There are always a few students whose style stands out in the crowd. The “Spotted” article in each of our issues features two such students; we get to hear what they have to say about their style and outfit inspiration. This fall, I sat down with Jakob Martin Kraft ’17 and Annie Whitehurst ’16 to talk fashion.

Though both share a passion for clean-cut and classic style, they take different approaches to their respective wardrobes.

Jakob, who is a History Major, member of the Fencing Club, a second bass in the Hamilton College Choir, the founder of the History and Monarchist Clubs, and the Student Leader of the Christopher Dawson Society. I found that his eloquence shines through not only in his clothing, but also in his words: AG: How would you describe your personal style? When you get up in the morning to get dressed, what do you think about?

JMK: I think… ‘down on his luck’ Polish noble from the 1920’s.

AG: So the ‘20’s is an inspiration for you?

JMK: 1920’s, especially 1920’s England. If you watch the ’81 TV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, you’ll probably see a lot of my influences in there. A cross between that, Steve McQueen, and Cary Grant.

AG: So you just go by what makes you feel good?

JMK: Basically, and what I can afford. In the immortal words of Zorro, The Gay Blade, “Remember my people: There’s no shame in being poor, only dressing poorly.”

AG: I love that! That is so accurate – especially for us as college students!

JMK: JC Penney is a go-to for me because they have good quality shirts. 100% Cotton – I wear nothing else – at least as far as shirts go.

AG: I see here a blazer, a button-up, and a tie underneath. What is your go-to outfit?

AG: So do you have any family inspiration, or is this kind of just your own look? Do your parents dress well?

JMK: Dress shirt, dark jeans or maybe khakis. Something with a little bit of color in it. And then dress shoes, usually not too dressy – it depends on the occasion.

JMK: We’ve always been a pretty well dressed family. My grandfather was in a tango band, played accordion – and they always wore tuxedoes. And I grew up watching old films, so a lot of it comes from there. I used to walk around with my grandpa’s hat on when I was seven, and a straw, cut to look like a cigarette.

AG: So semi-casual?

JMK: Yeah. Then almost always a blazer, unless it’s extremely warm out, but I’ll usually bring it along just in case. Some form of neckwear – tie, bowtie for special occasions. And always a pocket square.

mom’s style is also very simple, but she tends to mix old and new together. I think I’ve adopted that same preference. My grandmother, as well, has been a huge inspiration in terms of style. My mom and grandmother’s styles are very different.

My grandmother, she was an artist so she had a good eye for color and statement pieces, whereas my mom always favors the classics. So I guess I like the interaction of those two. I don’t have too many statement pieces, but I do like to add a few things to make simple pieces pop out more, and it’s great that I have been able to inherit so many wonderful things from my grandmother.

AG: Do you have any particularly precious items from her?

AW: Yeah, the watch that I always wear is from my grandmother.

It’s by Hermès.

AG: And you mentioned that fabulous Gucci bag!

AW: Yeah, that was my grandmother’s. She had an amazing eye for simple things as well – very understated.

AG: What is your go-to outfit?

Annie, a good friend of

mine and a Chinese Major and Economics Minor, is what I like to call “fab on the low.” She always looks classy and put-together, but in a seemingly natural, effortless way. She broke down her style approach for me: AG: How would you describe your personal style?

AW: I tend to stick to more simple things. I tend to focus more on the individual pieces of the outfit and the quality of those pieces and how they interact to form an outfit.

AG: Where do you get your wardrobe inspiration? And how did you come to develop this look? Has your fashion sense always been the same?

AW: The majority of my fashion sense comes from my mom. My

AW: Honestly, probably white vans…probably jeans – they’re like slightly mom-ish jeans, and then, right now because it’s fall, just a simple black sweater. The sweater I’m wearing now was my Mom’s…a lot of my sweaters were my Mom’s. Obviously this watch as well. Sometimes a necklace. I just like a very clean look.

AG: And your favorite labels or designers?

AW: My favorite store is probably Madewell. And then… yeah, I don’t know…I just like getting things from my mom and sister, too. It’s nice to be able to share with them.

Despite the obvious differences between Jakob’s and Annie’s wardrobes, they both offer looks that are clean, classic, and polished. Their styles exemplify the values of simplicity and quality.

style The Fashion Blog: Dead or Alive?

The blog is deadbut bloggers aren’t.

Just as Facebook replaced MySpace, and text messages became Snapchats, the traditional blog website has fallen to the wayside as fashion bloggers turn to Instagram and Snapchat to reveal intimate, real-time snippets of their lives. While I will sometimes visit a blogger’s website for an in-depth look at one of his or her outfits, I follow most of my fashion icons through Instagram, the holy grail of social media.

One of the most exciting events this summer was “Revolve in the Hamptons,” where Revolve Clothing, an upscale contemporary clothing website, brought top bloggers to the Hamptons for weekend activities and free clothes. The event, publicized on Instagram, was wildly successful and prompted a second trip to Croatia. Bloggers still have a major influence on fashion and sales, and while it’s harder than ever to break into the top ranks, the ones that do are forces to be reckoned with.

This summer, Eva Chen (@evachen212), formerly Editor-in-Chief of Lucky Magazine, made the leap from editor to director of the fashion bloggers (her official title is Head of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram). With almost half a million followers, Chen shares snaps of beauty products with her personal reviews in the comments. Her photos also include baby care and accessories, as well as her dynamic wardrobe of bright designer clothes and shoes. Her adorable baby, Ren, undoubtedly has something to do with her Instagram popularity as well.

Leandra Medine (@manrepeller), author of the blog The Man Repeller, is another one of my favorite bloggers. Offbeat and usually tongue-in-cheek, Medine portrays a side of fashion that is all about risks and dressing for yourself and no one else.

While her outfits are often only appropriate in the world of high fashion (and some are downright bizarre), Medine is one of

the elite few who have conquered the blogosphere and have not sold-out; she rarely does collaborations, and you won’t see her promoting any products for cash. The Man Repeller is an exception to the death of blogging websites, as it is a full-blown destination for all things luxurious, wild, and empowering in the fashion world.

Julia Engel (@juliahengel), author of Gal Meets Glam, bases her empire on feminine silhouettes and dreamy pastel palettes.

Ready for Resentment: An American Abroad Reflections on Vietnam and Bolivia

onsider the American. Can you imagine the stereotypical, work-obsessed, gun-toting, freedom-loving, french fry-munching, loud, obnoxious American man? Most of the developed world would easily agree, critiquing America from a lofty place of mutual international sway. The developing world, however, sees America much differently.

government to privatize Bolivia’s water. This raised water prices, decreased quality of services, and actually made it illegal to collect rainwater. The backlash from the Bolivian people and mass citizen-run activism that followed this act managed to actually reverse the privatization. Somehow, Bolivia, one the poorest countries in South America, threw out a powerful American corporation.

Waiting for my Vietnamese host family to pick me up, I was preparing myself for articulate apologies on behalf of my country. I figured a handy preliminary statement, something along the lines of “The atrocities my country committed against yours are irreconcilable, but like, can we still be friends?” A quick rundown of the Vietnam War, for those who have only read U.S.-made high school history textbooks: Vietnam fought hard and long for independence from France. As they finally succeeded in kicking one colonial power out, it was America who swooped in, attempting to crush Vietnam’s revolution for independence due to ideological differences. Pretty soon, the U.S. was losing the war, so we spat Agent Orange—an intense herbicide that was intended to destroy Vietnam’s forest—and as a result poisoned the Vietnamese people, leaving generations of impoverished Vietnamese children with life-altering birth deformities. Basically, we waged chemical warfare, something that is strictly against the international code of law. Needless to say, given this past, I was not expecting warm greetings.

Through my study abroad experiences in Vietnam and Bolivia, I learned a lot about how America is perceived on the world stage. In general, the United States government tends to intervene in international affairs, and as a result of many of these actions, it is important to be cautious of American stereotypes while travelling. Although Europeans’ ideas of Americans—that we’re nationalist, consumerist workaholics—might be true to some degree, it’s relatively harmless when compared to what America has done in countries such as Vietnam and Bolivia. The citizens themselves will probably not take offense to you or take out their anger on you as an individual, but it is worth understanding their perspective. So, if you get the chance, begin a conversation with someone abroad about his or her experience with the United States, and you may get to hear about U.S. history from a uniquely non-American viewpoint.

Thankfully, I was wrong. I was never treated with the hatred I thought I would receive as an American. In fact, on the basis of my whiteness and United States citizenship, I was celebrated and seemingly adored by most people I met in Vietnam, something that almost disappointed me. I wanted Vietnam to be mad at America, because they had every right to be. But, then again, they really couldn’t be mad at us; Vietnam relies heavily on the American economy, as they continue to transition to a more capitalist market; culturally, they’re embracing consumerism and academically, they must learn English to succeed in Vietnam. No matter how much I felt like the Vietnamese should hate the United States, I learned that they simply couldn’t.

Ironically, the resentment toward America that I was expecting (and almost hoping) to feel in Vietnam was something I found not there, but in Bolivia. Although most in Bolivia were friendly and welcoming, I quickly learned that politically, Bolivia loathed the United States.

The current president, Evo Morales, has formally kicked the United States Agency for International Development out of Bolivia, publically called Obama an imperialist, and shunned the Washington consensus of neoliberalism in favor of full-on socialism. While in Bolivia, I discovered that the basis for Evo’s rage comes from the Cochabamba Water Wars, where Bechtel, an American company, paid off the

Pizza Rock is my favorite in downtown Las Vegas. They have great live music on late Sunday mornings, and the best and most diverse selection of pizza in town.

Favorite going out spot?

Luv-It Frozen Custard right off the strip. The area is a bit sketchy, but you will often find long lines because it’s so good.

Try the Western Special or an Oreo shake.

Best thing to do with friends?

In Las Vegas, driving or walking around downtown is pure entertainment. People watching is a lot of fun, and you never know what you might see.

Even if they’re clichéd, go see the Blue Man Group, or any Cirque du Soleil show one night.

Tourist trap you should probably avoid: Although you should definitely see one, don’t go to more than one Cirque du Soleil show… it’s not worth it. Also, the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel is just not worth the flocks of tourists for the site itself.

If you do nothing else: Go to any buffet and eat as much food as you can.

If the weather is nice: Get outside and hit the Red Rock Canyon hiking trails.

Best place to shop: Called “The Shopping Wonder of the World,” the Caesar’s Palace Forum shops are an awesome place to spend hours shopping for any and all things you might want. With amazing architecture, a big aquarium, and a variety of restaurants, it’s a giant mall that serves as its own attraction.

If the weather is bad: The weather isn’t really ever bad…

My favorite place to go in Miami, hands down, is Kush in Wynwood. It’s the best burger place in the city, uses all locally sourced ingredients, and is in a super cool part of town. If you go to Kush, try a craft beer from their awesome selection, and order the Florida Alligator Bites and the Kush & Hash Burger on a waffle bun.

Best place to chill with friends?

I love going to Lagniappe in the Design District because it has the best vibes in the city. It’s a chill wine bar with live music every night. Great place to chill with friends and have a drink if you don’t want to go clubbing. However, if you’re looking for a club, Miami doesn’t disappoint; head over to WALL, Story, Liv, or Mansion, but plan for the dress code. If you wanna stay out all night, go to e11even, the only 24 hour club in Florida!

Fun day trip: Wynwood is a super trendy neighborhood right now, filled with galleries, cool bars, cafes and restaurants. Check out Miami’s art scene at the Wynwood Walls for some cool street art.

If the weather is nice: GO TO THE BEACH! Any beach, really, but if you want the cliché Miami vibes, head over to South Beach on Ocean Drive and 2nd.

If the weather is bad: Go to the PAMM (Pérez Art Museum Miami), a cool looking modern and contemporary art museum in Downtown. Totally worth the visit if you’re into art or need an indoor activity after lots of sun.

Tourist trap you should actually go to: South Beach, Ocean Drive. Totally a tourist trap but a must see place.

Tourist trap you should probably avoid: Sawgrass Mills is a ginormous mall that you don’t need to go to. Look for sales online and enjoy the Miami weather outdoors instead!

The Galley. It’s a steakhouse and bar, and the oldest restaurant in Santa Monica. Great place for a cold beverage, with a bit of an older crowd, so there’s a very relaxed atmosphere. Same goes for Chez Jay, which is a similar, chill bar nearby.

If the weather is nice: Go for a hike for good views and a fun day trip; Temescal Canyon is my neighborhood spot.

If the weather is bad: Luckily, it’s never bad.

Tourist trap you should probably avoid: Don’t go to Rodeo Drive. It’s bland and parking is impossible.

Unless you’re actually trying to buy Versace leather jogging pants, you’re best off browsing online.

If you do nothing else: Go to one of the Gettys. Getty Villa is by the beach, and is a recreation of a Greek villa, with a great collection of classical art and other historical artifacts. Getty Center is in Brentwood and is massive. It has interesting architecture and the worst work from every painter you’ve ever heard of. Big names, small game.

What’s the restaurant (or restaurants) you look forward to going to every time you’re home?

Victor’s 1959 Café is my favorite spot for unbeatable Cuban cuisine. Tied with that is the World Street Kitchen, a foodtruck-turned-restaurant with the best rice bowls I’ve ever had.

Favorite going out spot?

First Ave, known in the city as the “downtown danceteria since 1970,” is an awesome spot if you want to go out and dance with your friends. Chino Latino is also great to grab some drinks with your friends and listen to live music.

Best place to chill with friends?

If you’re hanging out with friends, you wanna go to the lakes.

In the summer, people rent paddleboards or canoes and explore the chain of lakes in Minneapolis. In the winter, it’s perfect for cross-country skiing or joining in for a pickup game of hockey.

If the weather is nice: Go to a concert at the Bandshell (and while you’re there check out the Lyndale Rose Gardens and the Robert Bird Sanctuary).

If the weather is bad: See a show at the Guthrie Theater or tour a few of the local breweries.

Tourist trap you should actually go to: The Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Museum. It offers beautiful views of the city and is a great spot for a picnic.

Tourist trap you should probably avoid: The Mall of America – not worth the overwhelming stress and sheer number of bodies that you’re sure to encounter.

Grab a baguette from a bakery (Maison Privat is my favorite) and a cheap bottle of wine (from a nearby Nicolas wine shop) and sit in front of the Eiffel Tower. The baguettes in France are so fresh and make the best cracking sound when you rip them.

Michael Breslin graduated from Hamilton College in 2013 with degrees in Comparative Literature and Theatre, and was awarded the college’s Bristol Fellowship upon graduating. He undertook a project titled “Gender Play: Displaying, Transgressing, and Transcending Gender Identity in World Theatre,” and traveled to Poland, Germany, England, Northern Ireland, Brazil, Indonesia, and France in order to “understand how theatre artists and audience members alike enact and react to this complex gender play.” Currently, Breslin is performing various productions of his original play “kiss me just once more” in New York City’s Dixon Place Theater.

Exploring Gender Abroad

Deasia Hawkins: Did you find the cultural environment inPoland, Germany, England, Northern Ireland, Brazil, Indonesia and France to be conducive or obstructing to the overall goal of your project? What factors contributed to this?

Michael Breslin: I was looking specifically at how theatre and culture interacted in these countries.

I was really interested in how I could “read” theatre as an expression of the contemporary politics of each country. Poland was particularly exciting for me—the director I was researching, Kryzstof Warlikowski, is credited with sparking the queer rights movement in Poland through his radical, transgressive theatre productions. He asks questions about gender, sex, and identity that are tied to existentialism and philosophy. In Indonesia, I was struck by the bravery of my teacher (Didik Nini Thowok, a cross-gender dancer) in the face of very strong homophobia and transphobia in Java. He fights oppression with humor, beauty, and incredible dance technique.

entertainment DH: What was the best experience you had when studying theater abroad?

MB: One of the highlights of my trip was attending the Festival d’Avignon in the South of France, curated

by French theatre master Olivier Py. For four weeks, the festival takes over the whole city of Avignon with theatre and dance performances in all sorts of found spaces: churches, basements, the Palais des Papes.

Olivier Py, a self-identified “Catholic homosexual,” curated a full festival of shows that ask questions about gender and sexual inequality. It was astounding.

DH: Do you believe that at the end of your project abroad, both you and the actors, directors, playwrights and audience members you worked alongside understood gender to be more than the binary categorization of ‘man’ and ‘woman’’?

MB: I went into the project almost wanting to discover theatre artists who were working “outside” the gender binary. Interestingly, at the end of the year, I wasn’t interested in that question anymore. I was more interested in what happens when an artist or an actor transgresses from one category to another. What are the political implications of this crossing? What does it express about larger questions regarding mortality and life? Cross dressing and role play have been a part of theatre since its creation. So what does the act of transgressing a gender boundary say in our contemporary culture(s), what possibilities does this act in theatre open up for audience members and the culture at large when thinking about their own identities? In case you haven’t already discerned, I ended the year with far more questions than answers.

DH: What was the inspiration for your play “kiss me just once more”?

MB: The idea for the piece came to me while I was traveling, actually. I picked up a copy of “Swann’s Way” in London and was emotionally moved by the first passage. I found parallels between the narrator’s description of isolation in childhood and my experience of isolation in my travels. In my work at Hamilton and in my research, I’m always interested in feminism and queer theory and how these two ideologies work with and against each other. I thought that the relationship between a boy and his mother embodies that conflict. I was also looking to make a theatre performance for myself, to delve into the form of solo performance in an artful and meaningful way,

and to collaborate with Alison McLaughlin ‘11.

DH: What challenges have you faced in the process of getting your play produced?

MB: The economic landscape of performance in New York makes it very difficult to produce your own work without the generosity of private donors and a determination to make work on a budget. I was incredibly fortunate that Vanessa Paige ‘88 helped me with rehearsal space at her Sounddance Studio space in Williamsburg. As for the Queer New York International Arts Festival, I submitted my show with a description and a video of a workshop production to an open call that the festival posted on Facebook. When I found out “kiss me just once more” was selected for the festival, I was surprised and deeply grateful that it would have an opportunity to be presented.

DH: What advice can you give to Hamilton students who strive to attain the success you have?

MB: I don’t think I’ve achieved any success, I think I just had ideas and feelings that I wanted to communicate and worked diligently to develop and market the show.

DH: What is/was your favorite thing about Hamilton?

MB: My professors I had - Carole Bellini-Sharp, Craig Latrell, Nancy Rabinowitz, Vivyan Adair. They showed me a completely different way of looking at the world and making art that is crafted, political, and contemporary.

Look at America Now: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton”

In every generation there is a musical that transcends all others and creates a place for itself in history. “Oklahoma!” was the first modern musical; “Company” was the first concept musical. “Phantom of the Opera” was, and still is, the longest running Broadway musical of all time. Yet “Hamilton” surpasses them all.

This modern—yet incredibly historical—major musical follows Alexander Hamilton, the orphan immigrant who helped shape America. Its writer, composer, and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who recently won a MacArthur Genius Grant, was inspired

by Ron Chernow’s biography of the country’s least-known founding father. From the moment he finished Chapter Two he had visions of “Hamilton” on the stage—in the form of a hip-hop musical. Indeed, “Hamilton” is a love letter to hip-hop, not just in its music, but also in the structure of the musical itself.

Amir “Questlove” Thompson, front man of The Roots and the producer of the “Hamilton” cast recording, describes hip-hop as an art form that “draws on old pieces of multiple traditions but gives them a new context and new life.” This, in essence, is “Hamilton.” The musical draws from numerous sources, from “South Pacific” to The Notorious B.I.G. Miranda does this in single lines (the last line of “Say No to This,” the adultery ballad of the musical, references Jason Robert Brown’s “Nobody Needs to Know,” which Miranda calls “the ultimate infidelity jam”) and in entire songs (“Ten Duel Commandments” samples both the title and tempo of Biggie Smalls’ “Ten Crack Commandments”).

Just as Alexander Hamilton’s obsession with the written word helped him emerge as a prominent public figure, the musical “Hamilton” stands out because of its script’s power with words. Miranda’s brilliant score roughly quadruples the word count of comparable American musicals. This is possibly due to its heavy reliance on rapped lyrics. In the fastest-paced song, a verse of 19 words is sung in just three seconds. And although many songs cram detail into a few seconds, the tempo of the entire musical is incredibly varied. Some songs follow upbeat, passionate rap battles, some are heartfelt R&B ballads, and some even mimic British pop idols. Because Miranda is a genius with the pen, all these genres come together effortlessly to tell an entire history in just under two and a half hours.

Given all this, perhaps the most incredible feat of the musical is its complete redesign of the faces of American history.

The casting of “Hamilton” is completely race-blind. The framers of America, typically played by white actors, are instead portrayed by Black, Latino, and Asian-American actors. In my Broadway-loving opinion, these actors are the founding fathers. Daveed Diggs, typically a rapper rather than an actor, arguably plays a more convincing Thomas Jefferson than any past performers have done. Renée Elise Goldsberry is Angelica Schuyler. Period. The only white actor to grace the stage is Jonathan Groff, who plays King George III. He is deliberately portrayed as a foil to the passionate revolutionaries raising hell in New York City.

His pomp and circumstance are designed to be ridiculed; his whole character and demeanor are a caricature of a man. And that brilliant design is flawlessly delivered.

Fall Concert Series: The Making of the Show

The Fall and Spring Concert Series are staples of the Hamilton community, and are often among the biggest events of the semester. Past concerts have included artists such as RAC, Macklemore, and, most recently, Zella Day. Zella, an up-and-coming indie pop artist from Pi-netop, Arizona, put on an energetic, hypnotizing performance with her incredible vocals and lyrics.

While most Hamilton students know that the Fall and Spring Concert Series are organized by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), they probably aren’t aware of the sheer amount of work that goes into putting these concerts together. In order to get a better idea of what goes into the making of these shows, I spoke to the CAB Concert Coordinator, Ondine Jean-Baptiste.

Olivia Paradice: Where do you get ideas for who would be a good artist to bring to the Hill?

Ondine Jean-Baptiste: For the fall, we have to book during the summer. So as soon as the Chainsmokers concert was done, I started going online and looking for artists. I did a lot of going through Spotify, because you can see whom your friends are listening to. You can’t just think about what you like to listen to. You have to consider not only what the majority of the school likes to listen to, but also what’s lacking. When I came into the position as Concert Coordinator, I realized that we don’t get a lot of women performers; so ideally, I wanted the opener and the headliner for the fall to be women. My apprentice and I made a master list of around 50 artists and then sent that over to our agent, who’s a middle man between us and the artists, and he told

us who does college shows, who’s in our price range, that kind of thing. And from there we made the list a lot smaller.

OP: Do you contact multiple artists to see who is interested?

OJB: We’ll have an initial person, but we’ll also have some backups in case they say no, or if they are out of our budget. That happened a lot with our openers for this show—we would send out an offer and they just wouldn’t respond, or they wanted more money than we had in the budget so we just had to keep moving on.

OP: What part of the show is the most difficult to coordinate?

Ondine: Publicity maybe?

This is my first show, and every show is different. I can try to gauge how much publicity is needed based on other shows, but every artist

is different and the campus’s exposure to each artist is different. So it can be hard to gauge how many posters to put up, and how many emails to send, and how often.

OP: Do the artists ever request that you provide anything for them?

OJB: Every artist will have a shopping list of things that they want us to have for them in their dressing rooms when they arrive. If they’re coming off a tour, they will also ask for stuff to put on their bus for the next city or venue. Generally it’s food; sometimes they ask for underwear or t-shirts. I know the Super Mash Bros asked for condoms to throw out into the audience.

OP: Do you get to relax and enjoy the concert, or are you still running around?

OJB: Oh yeah. I was awake from like, 7 a.m. until 1 a.m. the entire day of the Fall

Concert. I’m in charge and if anything goes wrong it’s on me. So I have to be there at all times, supervising everything. I had a massive to-do list—assigning people to do merchandise, to go get the food for the artists and set that up, signing in volunteers and making sure that they’re there. For this show, one or two tech crew people were sick.

Serendipitously, Zella was late so they had a little more time to set up the stage for sound check, but that could’ve been bad.

OP: Can we get any sort of hint as to who you’re looking at for the Spring Concert?

OJB: Like I said, we’re looking at what type of genre or artist that we don’t get often here. We’ve heard a lot of people saying they want more hip hop and rap on this campus, so….we’ll see!
