IN

the depths of winter in Upstate New York, it is often easy to forget about what’s going on outside the boundaries of whatever building you’ve burrowed yourself up in. However, the last few months (hopefully!) of the winter season are shaping up to be quite exciting, from big worldwide events like the Olympics and the celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, to smaller on-the-hill happenings like the hockey team’s 100 year anniversary. While it’s tempting to look forward to spring, when the snow will be melted and you’ll be able to walk outside without putting on three layers of clothing, we wanted this issue to be a little reminder that there is still joy and intrigue to be found in the cold winter months.

Sick of the social spaces on campus? Have no fear. Our Features Editor Thomas Duda has you covered on page 21, where he walks you through a step-by-step guide on how to build your own igloo. On page 8, you can find our exclusive interview with the operators of Hamilton College Memes, a Facebook page that has gained wild online popularity over the last year.

We’re also excited to feature student-artist Jaleel Davis, both on our cover and in our Entertainment section. Jaleel started a portrait business last year, and produces some of the most detailed and accurate drawings and paintings of people that we’ve ever seen, for very low prices.

His raw talent is uncanny, and we feel lucky to work with him. He can be contacted on instagram @jaleeldraws for business inquiries.

We also want to mention how much we appreciate the effort of two of our Section Editors, Meredith LaBelle and Maura Colley. Although they’re abroad this Spring semester, they worked hard on their sections for this issue, and were an immense help to us in the process. At the same time, we welcome a host of new members to the Continental team, including Travel Section Editor Charlotte Zonis, On The Hill Editor Catherine Pierce, Director of Photography Alex Chalk, as well as new layout designers. We’re excited to work with them for the next Spring issue.

ON THE HILL IN

the upcoming spring semester, President David Wippman will be co-teaching International Law, a twelve person 400 level Government seminar, here at Hamilton. I had the privilege of asking him a few questions about it.

I began by asking what motivated President Wippman, arguably the person in highest demand on campus, to add teaching a course to his plethora of responsibilities. He responded, “I really like to teach…I love the subject and it’s a subject that is really exciting and is changing quickly. So I asked the government department ‘Could I teach this course?” President Wippman taught the course to law students in Cornell’s Washington D.C. program, and is excited to bring his take on the class to Hamilton.

President Wippman is co-teaching the class with Professor Nicholas Rostow, a visiting Government professor at Colgate University. Wippman and Rostow met in law school at Yale and have kept in touch for upwards of 30 years.

President Wippman’s goal is to use their differing political views to expose students to divergent perspectives on the curriculum, “I think this is sort of a mini-version of Common Ground in that Nick has worked for two different Republican administrations and I’ve worked for a Democratic Administration on international issues, so we bring a somewhat different perspective and I think that’ll be a good thing for classes.” Co-teaching will also allow the class to maintain a consistent schedule despite President Wippman’s frequent need to travel on Hamilton administrative business. However, the primary purpose of co-teaching is to give students the broadest understanding possible, “I suspect Nick and I will agree on a lot more things than we will disagree on but we will definitely have a different perspective on some areas of the law and that’ll be good for people.” Although it is not the goal of the course, President Wippman would be pleased if the collaboration of Colgate and Hamilton faculty further improved the relationship between the students of both schools.

International Law is an impossibly mammoth subject to exhaustively cover in one course. Wippman and Rostow will be focusing on a few subtopics that interest them and are especially relevant in our current political climate.

President Wippman shared the topics he is most excited to cover, “I’m particularly interested in the ‘Law of War’ and ‘Use of Force’. Those to me are the most exciting; that’s where international law is both most important and also at its weakest…How do we constrain the behavior of states with military forces at their disposal through things like treaties and law? It is a really interesting question that I hope students will find interesting as well.” President Trump’s open affinity for aggressive U.S. military action in other countries gives these issues immediate relevance.

President Wippman also spoke on the current hectic American political climate and its connection to international law. “There’s so much going on. I tell people you really could teach international law from the front page, from the headlines, because whether it’s war or humanitarian issues, refugees, treaties, there’s so much that’s just being debated on the international law front right now and there’s so much that’s unsettled that I think it’s a really interesting time to study it.”

Could taking a course with the President of the College cause students’ nerves and awe to get in the way of participation? President Wippman doesn’t think so, “I don’t think that’ll be a problem. You know, I talk to students all the time. They seem quite able to express themselves and their views and I think the subject is incredibly exciting.

There’s so much going on in international law that it will, I hope, naturally generate some discussion…And if not we use the Socratic Method.”

AN EXCLUSIVE interview with hamilton college memes

With a following of over 1,000 people, the Hamilton College Memes Facebook account is a comedic sensation among students. Simply put, their memes are straight fire. I had the privilege of asking the creators of this page a few questions.

M: What originally inspired this meme account?

M: How strict are you about remaining anonymous?

HCM: So there are three of us as of now, and we were all friends before the account was started. One of us was home for Thanksgiving break and got the idea while looking through the meme page for a different liberal arts college, then texted the others to see if it was a good idea and none of us have any impulse control so we just did it. The page is a way to unify the dark and light sides and bring the campus together under the banner of dumb jokes and irreverent stupidity.

HCM: We try to be somewhat anonymous with it but most of (if not all of) our friends found out one way or another. We’re not too bothered if someone finds out because it’s a small campus and if someone really wanted to do some digging it’d be pretty easy to figure out who we are, but we try not to tell people we don’t know well or who will be careless with the info. Or freshmen. Or the feds (cough cough Frank Coots cough cough).

M: At 1,098 likes (and counting) this is one of the most ‘liked’ Facebook pages affiliated with the College. Did this popularity surprise you?

HCM: Honestly, it happened so gradually that we didn’t realize it was going to be this big until it already was. When the Daddy Bull started ripping us off published us we took that as a sign of impending world domination.

M: How often do you receive fan submissions?

Do you generally post all submissions, or is it a selective process?

HCM: We receive them from time to time, but our inbox isn’t overflowing by any means. We try to post all of our submissions, so if we didn’t post one of yours, please understand that we are tired and overextended public servants, meaning the meme was probably A+ and we just forgot we’re so sorry you are very funny we promise.

M: Favorite meme ever posted?

M: Where do you see the future of this meme account going? Will this be something you will pass on to future generations of Hamilton students?

HCM: We will be holding a series of physical and mental trials within the next few months to try to find worthy successors. Look out for our ads in the Daily Bull; we will need your bench max, bank account information, firstborn children, and social security numbers.

ric and Monique Holloway, both alumni of the class of ’87, met at Hamilton during their freshman year. Discussing their first time meeting, Monique shares: “We had a mutual friend and met in a J-term class—English 120. It was a small class –less than 10 students. And we peer reviewed each others papers. We didn’t talk much then. Spring semester we had History together.” During their second year, they both resided in Bundy. “One memory we all share is all having lived in Bundy during our stays at Hamilton,” explains Eric. “It’s not the most loved or sought out after dorm but we all ended up there at some point and can share that experience, both good privacy and getting a single as a freshman or sophomore, and bad - walking up the Hill in the cold.”

Monique tells us, “We had some time the first year or two to make our own friends and have separate experiences,” and Eric agrees, adding that, “it was nice to have the first couple of years to find ourselves in college before falling into a committed relationship at the end of sophomore year. We had established our own identities at school and the relationship expanded our experience by being able to see the school from another viewpoint.”

Speaking more on their experiences at Hamilton, Eric elaborated that the two “...both loved Hamilton before we met one another and subsequently having a relationship start while at school and extend to today and then have both our kids attend the school only serves to enhance the memories and experience.

Because the two ran into each other going to 10:30 classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they decided to have breakfast together in Bristol. “Back then,” Monique says, “it was the only option after 9:00am.” Sometime later during their sophomore year, they began a relationship. According to Eric Holloway, “We ended up going to a party together at Chi Psi and a play at Minor Theater together that spring of 1985, and we fell into a relationship.”

Eric and Monique graduated from Hamilton in 1987. After graduating, Monique worked in publishing in New York City while Eric studied for a specialized degree in Industrial Distribution. Despite being long distance, both Eric and Monique visited one another regularly. Eric notes, “We drove to TAMU together during the summer and found me a place to live and subsequently saw each other every 6-8 weeks. It was a period of low fares on Continental Airlines which helped.”

Both Monique and Eric admit that it was nice to begin a relationship after they had adjusted to life on the hill.

Eric proposed to Monique a year after their graduation from Hamilton, and they married 4 months after Er-

ic’s graduation from TAMU a year later. “We had a whole contingent from Hamilton at our wedding,” says Eric.

“We were married in NYC and hired a large yacht to take us around New York Harbor. We probably had 30 people from Hamilton at our wedding.

We have a picture of everyone in a picture with the former World Trades Center behind us.

As for now, Monique works as a financial advisor, having previously worked in nonprofit and as a magazine editor.

Eric, a serial entrepreneur, owns four different businesses. He attributes his success to Hamilton’s educational values and “a liberal arts education … that … teaches you to think, speak and write clearly. With these skills, he says, “You can learn and do anything.”

Indeed, Monique and Eric retain their strong connection to Hamilton and continue to keep in touch with their Hamilton friends. “It is very nice to be able to relive memories of college with someone all the time who shared the same experiences,” says Monique.

“And then we were so happy to be able to reconnect with Hamilton and have a reason to visit at least once a year when both our children, Ben ’14 and Dana ’18 attended. It is something now that the whole family can share. We feel very fortunate. Hamilton meant a lot to us and helped form who we became as adults and we are happy the school was able to do the same for our kids.”

all begins with the dreaded email from the Registrar’s Office: spring classes are available for viewing. You look at the course offerings hoping for the best schedule, only to have your dreams crushed because all of the classes you want either conflict with each other or are not offered at all. The classes you must take to satisfy major requirements have limited spots. Despite crossing your fingers and doing a rain dance in the hopes you will secure an early registration time, your registration time is 10:45am, which makes your prospects even worse. Registration is a time of the semester during which your friend from your sociology class with a better registration time becomes your worst enemy, you lose your sanity, and you’re willing to do anything it takes to get the classes you want.

You plow ahead, outlining your schedule on the Student Planning page of WebAdvisor, which replaced the much easier, more efficient PlanItHamilton.com, coming up with alternatives and praying for a bit of luck.

At 7:00am on registration day, the Registrar’s Office announces, “Ladies and gentlemen, let the Registration Games begin and may the odds be ever in your favor!”

Throughout the morning, you wait anxiously at your computer for your allotted registration time. The race for a seat in a class you really want is as stressful as ever. Your firstchoice schedule is full and several students are already on the waitlist. The spaces in

your backup courses are diminishing as time continues. Despite your preparation, you sit at your laptop scrambling to find classes as your registration time approaches. Finally, it’s your registration time but the stress is still building. If you don’t click “submit” fast enough, you’re waitlisted. Partial success—you’re able to get into one of your top choices and two of your backups, but you’re taking a random writing intensive course in a discipline in which you have no knowledge or interest, and you’re waitlisted for three of your other top choices. Typically, the schedule you end up with includes at least one class you did not have on your preparatory lists. Rarely are you truly excited about your schedule.

We’ve all been there—registering for classes can either work out perfectly or be the worst experience of your semester, but is typically the latter. Some students are lucky enough to show up on the first day of class or email a professor and get into a course they were closed out of during registration. Sadly, many others aren’t so lucky. Registration is a very frustrating and detrimental process for those students who have bad registration times and can’t get into classes that they are really interested in or need as prerequisites for other courses in their majors or minors.

wo words: utter savagery. Kiss goodbye to playing nice and put on your game face. Your bestie Becky got 369 and you’re stuck with 420, and you don’t have time to crack a smile. Time to schmooze with that girl from your Lit class, hopefully she remembers you.

Hamilton doesn’t do personal space, so better start preparing for that quad life, or send half your suitcases home to burrow into that Bundy double. Maybe you should have done sub-free after all…but I guess you’ll need a drink (or 7) after all of this.

Walking into the barn for the housing lottery is like going up in a plane to skydive, but the place has a 2.5 star rating on Yelp.

LUCY MARR HOUSING LOTTERY You’ll probably be okay, but…wait. Excuse me sir, did you buckle that correctly? The future is utterly out of your hands. Hello, God? It’s me, number 420. You glare at the happy sub-100s, what strings did they pull to get that?

At first, you think everything may be okay, there’s no way everyone wants a single…right? But oh wait, Rick, the guy that always seems to be at the first square table in Commons just told his buddies he pulled the last darkside single. Oh no. Not the hill. Not the 45-degree-angle, ice-cold, snow-ridden, sub-freezing, leave-your-room20-minutes-early hill. Just remember to breathe. You didn’t do Power Yoga to “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” for nothing. A school you pay this much for couldn’t screw you over…or could it?

Hours pass, the barn starts to feel like those Annex parties from freshmen year—barren, awkward, and no happy end in sight. Number 300 is called and Becky slyly sneaks off with that girl she works with at Phonathon. Nice try, Becky. I thought we were besties, Becky. Fuck you, Becky. You look around at your fellow warriors. Not all heroes wear capes. Finally, you hear your number through the cringe of the announcer. You enter the Annex and look to your fate. Only one room left on all of campus: I hope you like wearing black clothes, making people feel unsettled and waking up early, because the early bird gets the worm, and you’re living in the crow sanctuary by the overflow lot. Hey, on the bright side, at least you’ll never have trouble finding a parking spot!

This past year, California saw one of the worst wildfire seasons in its history. A dry and hot summer left California landscapes covered with dead and dry vegetation, perfect fuel for large-scale wildfires. For centuries, wildfires have been common in California, caused by fallen power lines, lightning, cars parked on vegetation, or clumsy campers. So why have you heard so much about this year’s California wildfires? Wildfires beginning in October in the LA area brought devastation to local communities, killing a total of 43 people and destroying many homes and businesses. December’s wildfires exceeded October by destroying upwards of 200,000 acres of land. These wildfires are one of a string of extreme climatic events that have occurred this year, leading people to wonder; why?

Following years of terrible drought, a wet and rainy spring season in 2017 promoted fresh vegetation growth throughout northern California. The extremely hot and dry summer that followed killed the young ground vegetation and created more fuel to feed fires.

According to the National Weather Service, downtown Los Angeles received just 0.12 inches of rain since October 2st, 2017. Once the firesstarted, the strong October winds, sometimes reaching 70 mph or more, helped spread the fires across acres of valuable and inhabited land (Turkewitz, 2017). The public was particularly alarmed because much of the land destroyed is in Sonoma County, America’s wine country. While this is bad news for wine lovers, it is worse for

California’s economy, which makes money from wine production and its related tourism industry (Daniels, 2017).

This particular fire was so strong and spread so quickly that residents in the area barely had time to evacuate their homes. Many of the 22 deaths occurred in homes, or while residents were trying to escape (Watkins, et. al.

2017). In addition to the tragic loss of lives, the fires destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings, leaving behind almost nothing for those who escaped. The cause of the October wildfires are still unknown.

ia S E R I F D Unfortunately, October was not the end. From the beginning of October to the end of 2017, fires burned 127,667 acres of land in California, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

The Thomas Fire, which started in Southern California on December 4, 2017, was 100% contained on January 12, 2018 after burning 281,893 acres of land and destroying 1,063 structures (CA Dept of Forestry & Fire Protection, 2017). Although the California wildfires were out of the spotlight at the end of the year, they were still burning.

Although the fires mentioned here are currently 100% contained, there is great potential for more, and bigger fires, to burn. The forestry service has identified 100 million dead trees that have not yet been burned, which remain a huge source of fuel for future fires. Homes that are still standing may be uninhabitable because of smoke, dangerous chemical exposures, or structural damage. The surrounding natural environment is

also at risk from ash and chemicals that can leach from landfills into surrounding ecosystems. As clean up moves forward, state officials are taking steps to ensure the safety of the human population, as well as the natural environment (Fuller, 2017).

Experts and climate change-supporters alike point to the correlation between the wildfires and climate change.

Wildfires have been happening in California for centuries, and the wildfires we have recently seen are not started by climate change. However, the sporadic periods of rain followed by the drier and hotter summer climate that California has experienced, gave rise to greater opportunity for wildfires to take hold (Turkewitz, 2017). Climate scientists predict that climate patterns we are seeing will become more severe in the future, making it likely that wildfires will become more common and destructive.

: A Review

BY PHILIP MARKS ‘20 The Career Center switched its student network this year, from HamNET to Handshake. Handshake is an estbalished career development platform where students can discover employers and employment opportunities, submit job applications, and register to attend career fairs, events, and lessons. To learn why the Career Center made this switch, I sat down with Discovery Team member Chris Klein ‘18. Klein recalled that many students were disillusioned with the old website and that the Career Center had received reports that HamNet was not user friendly. With that in mind, it chose a new service: Handshake. Not only is Handshake easier for students to navigate, but Klein reports it saves time for Career Center’s employees and increases responsiveness.

Envisioning life after college, or even just looking for an internship, can be a daunting experience for any student. Thankfully, Handshake makes both processes much simpler. When logging onto Handshake, there is one thing you must do: fill out your profile as completely as possible. As Klein explained, “By filling out your profile, you are making Handshake more specific to you.” Once you complete your profile, Handshake starts offering you events, internships, and jobs specific

to your interests and abilities. Additionally, you begin to receive emails from Handshake alerting you to job application deadlines that match your profile.

Although Handshake has a few different tabs, according to Klein, the most important are “Jobs” and “Events.” These titles may seem self-explanatory; however, there are a few nuances to each that enhance the user’s experience. When navigating a job or internship search on Handshake, you should remember that all listings are targeted at Hamilton students.

This may increase your chance of getting accepted, especially if you add the search criteria “Match All Employer Preferences.” This feature narrows the listings to only those for which you are well qualified. However, there are a few kinks, as Handshake is not always updated. For example, the seniors’ class year has not been changed, so jobs aimed at seniors do not appear under this feature. The “Events” tab lists the dates for Career Center workshops and for employer visits to campus chronologically. Klein advises students to glance at this tab early in the semester in order to be aware of all expected employer visits.

The Handshake website has a few other advantages in addition to its “Jobs” and “Events” features, specifically the information under “Career Center: Resources.”

This page offers students guides to the job application process, including information on preparing a resume and cover letter as well as essential skills for interviewing and networking. The guides’ useful materials include sample resumes and strategies for answering generic interview questions. This tab also contains graduate school guides, such as a Law School Guide that includes a comprehensive plan outlining the application process and answers to questions concerning this process.

Based on my experience and discussions with Klein and other students, Handshake has produced encouraging results. Handshake is a valuable resource to any Hamilton student, regardless of their class year or place in the job process. Handshake will by no means guarantee every Hamilton student an internship or job, but it is a great starting point and useful tool throughout the process. That’s reason enough to complete your profile as soon as possible!

This February will mark the 43rd annual celebration of Black History Month. Originally established in 1926 as Negro History Week by the Association for the Study of Negro Life (founded by historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson,) this observation was created with the intent of illustrating the absence of African Americans from the traditionally told American narrative.

he many successful contributions made

by African Americans to the history of the United States were rarely recognized at this time, as illustrated by James Baldwin’s 1963 Talk to Teachers: “If one managed to change the curriculum in all the schools so that Negroes learned more about themselves and their real contributions to this culture, you would be liberating not only Negroes, you’d be liberating white people who know nothing about their own history.”

Many institutions only nominally celebrate Black History Month, by simply hanging inspirational posters of prominent African American figures each February. But the observance is about so much more than just reading up on prominent Black figures such as Robert Moses (Hamilton Class of ‘56,) who served as field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the Civil Rights Movement and helped to register hundreds of African Americans to vote.

In 1970, through the urging of members of its Black United Students group and African American professors, Kent State University became the first institution to participate in and popularize this monthlong celebration by integrating its curriculum to include more aspects of Black history. Just a few years later, in February of 1976, U.S. President Gerald R. Ford made a statement officially recognizing February as Black History Month. It has been celebrated annually ever since, and even spread to the United Kingdom in 1987 and Canada in 1995.

According to Professor A. Todd Franklin of the Philosophy and Africana Studies Departments, the true intent of Black History Month is to serve as a time to “reflect and recognize how far we’ve come, but also how far we have to go.” It’s important that we acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans from the past, present, and future not only during the month of February, but all year long in our classes, families, and communities.

SKATING THROUGH THEIR CENTENNIAL IAN NICHOLS ‘19

U

nfinished business is the recurring theme for this year’s Hamilton Men’s Ice Hockey team. For all the success and records set last season, the team ultimately fell short of their end goal of winning both the NESCAC and National Championships. However, the team is not dwelling on the past, as they have begun a new season, with new opportunity. Although the team lost some important players from last year’s senior class, Coach Haberbusch has brought in a strong freshman class, along with three Division I transfers, which should allow the Continentals to continue to build on last season.

The last season saw the team finish with twenty wins, five losses, and four ties. The team started off red hot, remaining the last undefeated team in the country posting an 11-0-2 record in their

first 13. The Continentals rode that momentum to the NESCAC regular season title. After defeating Bowdoin in the first round of the playoffs, Hamilton hosted the NESCAC tournament for the first time in program history. After a thrilling come from behind victory against Wesleyan in the semifinal, the Continentals lost a hard-fought final against Trinity on an unlucky bounce in overtime. Fortunately, the team’s record was strong enough to receive an at-large bid to the National tournament where the Continentals defeated the Oswego State Lakers in the first round. Hamilton’s magical ride ended in the quarter finals however, with a loss to the eventual champion Norwich Cadets.

This season marks the 100th anniversary of Hamilton hockey, and the team intends on making it the most memorable year yet.

The Continentals plan to celebrate the centennial season with an event held February 9-11, in which the program will thank past Hamilton College athletic director Albert Prettyman, who has been credited with introducing hockey to the area in 1918.

With a current record of 11-6-1, the Continentals are picking up right where they left off last sea-

son. The team has been getting contributions throughout the lineup, and continued their strong defensive play that was a hallmark of their success a season ago. Neil Conway ’18 has been happy with the performance of the team thus far, but knows they can’t get complacent. “It’s a long season. We’re happy to be [doing well] but know we have a long way to go. Our toughest games are ahead of us and we’ll have to step it up a notch to finish at the top of the league again this year.

We won’t be satisfied unless

we’re holding a National championship at the end of the season.”

There’s expectations around the team this year, but it appears that the Continentals are up for the challenge. With a strong leadership group, and the guidance of head coach Rob Haberbusch and assistant coach Max Mobley, the team has a solid foundation in place moving forward. They know there’s much more work to do, but the Continentals are looking to place an exclamation point at the end of this special, centennial season.

Commonly associated with the Eskimo peoples, igloos were actually predominantly used by tribes in both Canada’s Central Arctic region and Greenland’s Thule area. The term comes from the Inuit word iglu, simply meaning “house” or “habitation.” Truly an ingenious invention, the Inuit people realized that snow makes an excellent insulator, even though it’s a somewhat unorthodox construction material. What even the Inuit people didn’t realize however, was just how lit you can get in an igloo. Today, with careful preparation, igloos can be a dope spot for sick hangs, my dude.

THE NEW RACE TO THE MOON

E

ver since the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, the Cold War between the United States and Russia, and Neil Armstrong becoming the first person to step foot on the Moon, the entire world has been obsessed with space travel. Scientists and engineers have built, tested, and rebuilt rockets to carry cargo or send astronauts who have been training for years to explore unknown parts of the galaxy. It’s been a race to see who can fly the farthest, the fastest, and the longest – and live to tell the tale. But until now, it's been a race exclusively between the world’s most powerful nation-states.

Aerospace engineers and space-travel proponents all over the world have been calling for a more proactive approach to Moon landings. Early in his presidency, Donald Trump made the promise that the U.S. would soon have people on the moon. NASA, though, has vetoed the idea, at least for 2018. Due to lack of funding and the slow-moving nature of bureaucracy, NASA doesn’t have any take-offs planned any time soon. If governments can’t or won’t do it, though, then private companies will.

As of 2017, Google launched a worldwide Moon landing competition called the Google Lunar XPRIZE challenge, in an attempt to jump-start the space engineering industry. The competition presents three simple core challenges to participants: they must first successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon, then have it travel at least 500 meters, and finally transmit high-definition video and images back to Earth. The team of engineers that achieves all three elements of the completion earns 20 million dollars – and teams who complete one or more parts of the Moon landing competition receive varying second-place prizes of about 5 million dollars. And, the teams only have until the 31st of March 2018 to complete their Moon landings.

Five teams of aerospace engineers are competing in Google’s race to the Moon. They’re all non-government affiliated, but a number of the teams identify strongly with, and are based in, the team-members’ home countries.

The five final teams are HAKUTO (Japan), TeamIndus (India), Moon Express (U.S.), SpaceIL (Israel), and Synergy Moon (International).

While Google’s competition won’t mean that a person will be landing on the Moon, it does signal a major shift in how space travel is evolving. The days of national conflict and political alliances dictation space travel are over – private companies (and their CEOs) are the main players now.

Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and co-founder of PayPal and Tesla, also has a stake in the space-travel race. Musk’s rocket-manufacturing company SpaceX, founded in 2002, is devoted solely to creating new rockets and space-crafts, with the aim of eventually sending passengers to outer space, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Musk’s efforts to create the most successful, privately-owned spacecraft manufacturing company have paid off. The company’s website notes its accomplishments and the flights of its rockets, including multiple low-orbit missions and trips to the International Space Station.

As a privately-owned and operated company, SpaceX is free from some of the bureaucratic tensions that hinder even the most proactive NASA engineers. With the aggressive track record of ground-breaking accomplishments that the young SpaceX company has already accumulated, it’s easy to imagine the private company piloting the next journey sending passengers to the Moon.

The Falcon Heavy, one of the most recent rockets produced by SpaceX, can carry over 119,000 pounds, and, unlike some NASA space crafts, is also designed to carry passengers. The SpaceX website boasts that, “When Falcon Heavy lifts off in 2018, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world,” but it’s not clear yet when exactly the lift off will happen.

As deadlines for both Musk’s Falcon Heavy as well as the Google lunar race are fast approaching, the spacetech community can only hope that at least one of the advanced space-crafts will succeed. This new age of privately-owned and operated groups could, hopefully, continue to foster international competitions such as the Lunar XPRIZE, and further incorporate designs from aggressive and energy-conscious companies like Musk’s.

The outcome of these projects over the next few years will have significant impacts on the future of space travel. Who knows? 2018 could be the year when space travel becomes defined not by governments or bureaucratic policies, but instead becomes contingent on the will of individuals.

Charity after Calamity: Making a Difference following Hurricane Season

T

hough the 2017 hurricane season has come to an end, the names Harvey, Irma, and Maria still strike fear into the hearts of many American citizens.

The damages caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana alone totaled nearly 180 billion dollars. In addition to wreckage by flooding, the storm endangered oil platforms, forcing workers to evacuate and causing gas prices to rise.

Hurricane Irma, which hit Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, resulted in roughly 200 billion dollars in damages.

There was an immense amount of destruction that left areas including the Florida Keys devastated. Major flooding occurred in cities like Jacksonville up the eastern coast.

The strongest storm of the season, Hurricane Maria, hit Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands the hardest. There could have been as many as 500 people killed because of the storm. The 100 billion dollars in damages is devastating the already bankrupt US territory. Even a month after the catastrophe, much of Puerto Rico was still without power and with limited access to food and water.

Times of crisis such as these demand action. As Hamilton students and as humanitarians, we can help – here are some ways to do something for those in need.

D ONAT E Go Fund Me is a platform that hosts a multitude of campaigns, personal and community-based, for those impacted by the hurricanes of 2017. The Greater Houston Com-

munity Foundation, The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and United Way of Greater Houston have relief funds for Texas victims of the storms. The Center for Disaster Philanthropy centers around long-term recovery for those most in need.

To help in Florida, a number of organizations have set up relief funds. These include Bridge to Help, Miami Foundation, Southwest Florida Community Foundation, and The Community Foundation of the Florida Keys all focus on relief for storm victims.

All Hands Volunteers and Mercy Corps are two organizations that are providing support to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands specifically. They rebuild and assess homes and schools, remove debris, and even provide cash cards to meet the urgent needs of vulnerable families.

VOLUNTEER If so inclined, you can also donate your time to the cause, with organizations that help storm victims. The Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity both have chapters in all of the affected areas. Convoy of Hope is searching for clean-up teams in Houston, Texas. Groups of 10-20 may apply to help as part of the organization, and housing would be provided. In Florida, the United Way of Miami-Dade and The New Florida Majority are recruiting volunteers. Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD), which pairs volunteers with teams, is the best way to help in Puerto Rico. This year’s alternative winter break went to Jacksonville, Florida, where Hamilton students joined with local Jacksonville organizations to aid in disaster relief.

amilton College sits atop a picturesque hill in small-town Clinton, New York. Getting dropped off on the first day of school means getting up the Hill and reaching food and friends. But let me tell you, there is a whole other world off the Hill. However, getting down may be trickier than getting up. No friends?

Sorry, I meant no friends with cars? Don’t want to ride the Jitney for the hundredth time, or face its delays?

It’s all good! Not to worry fellow Conts, no matter what time of the year it is, there are always creative ways to get off the Hill.

While the summer heat still lingers, how about a refreshing ride down a slip n’ slide? Some strong tape will attach an ample number of slippery tarps together to bring you and your friends to your destination. Slip n’ slides are also good on the curves — the flexibility of the canvas achieves a perfect grip to the contours of the ground.

If you like water, but don’t want to get wet, a nice canoe ride down the Oriskany Creek is another potential option. But where is the creek, you ask? Physical Plant recently added a Largemouth bass to the KTSA pond to limit the goldfish population that has overtaken the creek. That means that in the ecosystem of Hamilton College, even a secluded pond has an opening to the pastures beyond the Hill. If the goldfish can do find it, you can too.

When campus is hidden beneath four feet of snow, you may think your mobility is limited, but no! All that snow just means there is more usable surface area to get you where you want to go. The Glen House rents out skis (free of charge) which you can strap on and use to glide to the bottom. But hey, that’s a lot of effort. If you don’t want to stand, there are also snow tubes, which accommodate multiple people, snow saucers, and sleds upon which you can sit.

All you need is a good friend or snow-dogs to pull you along!

For aspiring Olympic athletes, the trip down from 198 College Hill Road is surprisingly similar to luge tracks. Here in upstate New York, big furry dogs are in demand and canine-loving students are in withdrawal. If there are huskies, goldens, labs, or any comparable breed that can bear the weight of a hibernation-oriented college student, you can actually combine skiing and dog-sledding — officially known as skijoring. Dogs! Snow! Off-campus food!

You can’t lose.

As the snow melts off the telephone wires that line the road, it reveals the perfect conditions for creating a zip line. More than one student can partake in this act of gliding down from the Wellin Museum to the Cider Mill. Who needs a tropical vacation ziplining through a jungle when you could zipline through those leafless, winter-time upstate trees? These thrill-seeking students can find themselves an invigorating trip down the Hill with breathtaking views on this adventure.

Finally, come springtime, should there ever be a flood, College Hill Road is the perfect condition for white-water rafting! The width of the road can accommodate rafts and its turns will allow the water, and you, to flow freely down to Park Row in Clinton.

Happy rafting!

College students are known for being resourceful so getting off the Hill is no challenge. Just because you don’t have a car doesn’t mean you are stranded atop the hill waiting for the next Jitney to roll around.

The New Health Center and Our Community’s Needs

s each semester concludes and exams draw nigh, students at Hamilton receive teacher and course evaluations. The purpose of these evaluations is to provide respectful and constructive feedback to departments and professors about courses. It creates a dialogue between students and administration wherein feedback can be given without personal attacks. A diatribe against a professor is not conducive to effecting any change. Consider then, if you will, this article about the new Counseling Center at Hamilton College to be an evaluation of the pros and cons from two students. My co-author, Cameron Baker, and I are not protected by anonymity the way that students who complete course evaluations are. Nonetheless it is our hope to provide honest and introspective feedback in a way that can be readily digested by you, our valued reader, and any member of the administration who happens to peruse The Continental.

The first and most pressing point of concern about the new Health Center surrounds the clinicians working in the building. Providing a new space for the same number of people to operate in does not do anything to address the issues that the Hamilton College community is facing right now. It is entirely possible that there are plans to bring on new providers for the mental health team at Hamilton College, but if those plans are made they are not readily available to the average student and raise questions about transparency. It is the opinion of the writers of this article that, especially given the extremely unfortunate losses of students in recent semesters, there needs to be more information going out to the student body. Hamilton stands on a hill and the vast majority of students who need medical assistance will pursue it on campus. We, the student body, currently feel a need for more clinicians and better access to psycho-pharmaceutical care.

Many students are forced to wait weeks for a consult with the psychiatrist at the Counseling Center or face the prospect of a $300 initial evaluation and $150 follow up with a provider in town. How does building a new space change how mental health is treated on campus? What if the money spent on this new space was instead spent on hiring a fulltime psychiatrist and a full-time medical doctor?

How is the student body to feel when the systems

in place to ensure our health is a priority are not made readily clear? To the students struggling right now with mental illness, how does the painstakingly slow construction of a new building assuage their concerns or address their needs? In the current machinations of counseling at Hamilton, students have little efficacy when addressing their own mental health. We are at the mercy of the men and women who do their best to stem the tide of students coming in and out of the Counseling Center.

We need more providers and more options for medications, not just a bigger building.

In addition, we feel that with the construction of a new Health Center, its services need to be more readily available seven-days a week. Requiring on-campus living, the student body of Hamilton is comprised of almost no “commuter� students. Hamilton is our home, and the lack of health care from the hours of 4PM on Friday until the possibility of an appointment on Monday at 8AM is unacceptable.

Granted, Hamilton provides emergency aid, but not every health issue is grand enough for EMT assistance. Many other NESCAC schools have weekend Health Center hours. Colleges including Middlebury, Colby, and Williams offer services on Saturday or Sunday and do not share our Health Center’s luxurious 75-minute-long lunch break. Moving forward with this expensive and highly anticipated building, efforts should be focused upon improving quality for students on the hill, not appearance for applicants.

We would be remiss if we did not applaud the efforts of the administration this semester and their overarching efforts. The Mental Health Taskforce has met several times, has already made actionable strides toward changing the dialogue about mental health, and has formed plans on how to best educate students on the options available to them at Hamilton.

Minds for Change, a student-run organization aided by the Counseling Center and administration, hosted their annual Speak Out, allowing students an opportunity to share their experiences in dealing with mental health. The Counseling Center has partnered with the Jed Foundation, and efforts are certainly being made to best serve the needs of the students that call Hamilton home.

Students on campus take part in a variety of activities beyond their academics, such as community service, arts, and athletics.

But what most do not know is that a small group of Hamilton students participate in the Reser ve Of ficers' Training Corps, or ROTC, in addition to their academic, athletic, and social lives at Hamilton. Students participating in ROTC train as commissioned officers of the US Armed Forces. Many also receive merit based scholarships in return for service to our country. Because there is no ROTC program on campus at Hamilton, its participants travel to surrounding universities to complete training.

For example, Katie Tenefrancia, a junior on campus, travels to Syracuse University at least once a week as part of her ROTC training. Additionally, she goes to Utica College four days a week for physical training, trains for one weekend per semester at Ft. Drum, NY, and in the summer travels to Ft. Knox, KY for Advanced Camp. Tenefrancia, although very passionate about her participation in ROTC, said, “Balancing ROTC with my athletic and academic obligations is definitely challenging because many of my assignments for ROTC require long hours or a lot of time away from Hamilton working with other cadets.” Though, as many others do, Tenefrancia decided that she wanted to pursue ROTC because she has “always wanted to serve my country and want to pursue a career that constantly challenges me. Military service also runs in my family and ROTC was an important consideration for my college decision.”

Other students, though, are very surprised when they hear that some on campus are in ROTC. Tenefrancia included her perspective and explained, “usually other students are pretty surprised to find out that we even have an ROTC program that students can take part in.” She insisted, “while I have experienced very mixed reactions across the community, my teammates and coaches are extremely supportive which really helps me balance ROTC while in soccer season.”

After graduating college, many students in the ROTC program immediately go on to serve in the military for numerous years, as Tenefrancia will also do after graduating in May 2019.

are a surprising amount of accomplished musicians, actors, and artists.

One such artist is Jaleel Davis, a talented illustrator and painter. I took some time to sit down with Jaleel to gain insight about his artistic inspirations, aspirations, and technique.

When did your passion for art begin?

I began drawing when I was only five in kindergarten.

An older kid saw me tracing from a book and told me how it's really easy to just follow along the lines of an already complete picture, but it means much more when you create that picture yourself. From that moment on, I never stopped drawing. I practiced and practiced whenever I could get a hold of a pencil and paper. I always found new ways to improve and the more I grow, the more I feel inspired to keep creating and expressing myself through art, whether it's a drawing, painting, photography, or even a poem.

Who and what are your art inspirations?

Anime and cartoons were a big part of my childhood, so when I was a kid, that's all I would draw, like characters from shows like Dragon Ball Z and The Fairly Odd Parents.

But, I'd have to say my inspiration comes from my life. Art is my outlet, the way I talk, the way I truly pour out how I'm feeling. With all the insanity in the world, I need to express what everything means to me. I feel free when I'm moving my pencil or brush across a page. Some inspirations include Kehinde Wiley, Andy Warhol, George Condo, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Joey Badass, and many others.

As an art major, I've taken a number of art classes.

I've taken a couple in drawing, a couple of painting classes and even classes in photography, ceramics, and printmaking.

Outside of the classroom, I am on the E-Board of Grasping Roots, a Hamilton publication, as the graphic designer and I often submit art to the paper.

What is your favorite subject to draw or paint the most?

And why?

I draw people because everyone has a different story.

Just someone's eyes or the positioning of their mouth can tell you how someone is feeling. The positioning of their hands displays their mood. The uniqueness of every face is also very interesting to me. I adore drawing eyes the most.

What is the most 5 challenging part of your creative process?

The most challenging part of my creative process would have to be the fact that I don't have the ability to paint or draw every single thing that comes to my mind. I have so many pieces in my head and I need to let them out.

How do you incorporate art into your future plans?

A

For the best future I plan to work in the marketing department of a business that really resonates with my life values and love for art.

Long term, I actually think I want to become a professor of the arts like [Professor Bruce] Muirhead. He was my first drawing teacher at Hamilton and I appreciate the old guy.

Behind the Rings: 2018 Winter Olympics

I

t’s February, and the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics are upon us. Whether you are a winter sports enthusiast or not, it is difficult to stay away from the excitement of the games.

Even as I write this, weeks before the games start, the whole country of South Korea is buzzing with the heat of the torch lighting and anticipation for upcoming opening ceremonies. Behind the magic of all the talent, shiny medals, and flashy ceremonies, however, are South Koreans that are working night and day without compensation, solely for the success of the games.

The buzz of the games can be felt especially in Kangwon National University, a school conveniently located near the snowy Olympic stadium.

With such a global event happening near campus, students and professors alike are actively participating to help lead the 2018 Olympics to success.

I had the chance to talk to a few 2018 Olympic volunteers there: Professor Jin Jeong Chul, a senior student Lee Woo Young, and Professor Hong Seok Pyo of the Pyeongchang Olympics Committee. They have all gone through a highly selective application process, finished their basic training and English education, and are currently receiving individual job training.

Q: How do you feel about being an important part of such a global event?

Prof. Jin: I feel especially intrigued by the

fact that it’s the winter Olympics, which I feel is more of a “youths’ festival” than the summer Olympics. (laugh) I don’t think there will ever be a more wonderful opportunity in my life. I chose to do the notorious traffic volunteer job in the snow field. I know from experience from the test events that it will be freezing, but I also believe it will be more rewarding.

Lee: I feel pride in serving as the face of our

nation. I feel very responsible towards doing my assigned work and making sure the crowds and athletes are always comfortable.

Q: What role do you think Olympic volunteers play in hosting the Olympics?

Lee: I like to think of the athletes and the au-

dience as the main characters of this event, and our job is to ensure that their enthusiasm and enjoyment are at their highest. I want to make sure that everyone has an unforgettable experience at the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Prof. Jin: It is impossible to host the Olympics without hundreds of volunteers. Therefore, for the host countries, volunteers are the faces of this mega sporting event. That’s why we go through a special training where we learn and embrace that we are also the “national athletes” for our country and the games.

Q: What was the hardest obstacle you faced as a volunteer so far?

Lee: The freezing weather.

Prof. Jin: The cold. And how long the volunteer period is. The games themselves are long, but we also have to work starting weeks before the actual games.

Prof. Hong: I think it’s when something

Q: Do you think the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics will affect South Korea’s economic or political status? If so, how?

Prof. Hong: The Olympics has a great impact

on many aspects of the society. Idealistically, the social overhead capital will become more accessible, and lead to increase in tourism, local economic development, and population inflow. However, I’m worried about the excessive facility investment for the Olympics and the lack of post-utilization measures. The games are currently expected to have an economic deficit. That’s why it is absolutely essential that we develop a long-term strategy of utilizing the event for greater profit.

Prof. Jin: The Pyeongchang Winter Olympic

Games are very different from those of other European cities. In a society where a centralized political order has been established, the region of Kangwon Province has attracted this international mega sporting event solely on its own initiative, which is politically very significant itself.

Q: What are some of the key features to look forward to in the Pyeongchang Olympics/Paralympics?

Prof. Hong: First, the Pyeongchang Olympics will be an IT Olympic game. As world’s first, we are using 5G network to provide a new Olympic experience to participants and watchers.

During the games, many events introducing Korea’s diverse culture (food, shows, art…) are planned. Taking part in these events will lead to the best Olympic experience.

Also, there will be diverse performances combining South Korea’s traditional culture and modern k-wave, during the opening ceremony.

(Star Wars) lives in a Root single.

He’s a legacy, and never stops talking about what Hamilton was like when his dad and uncle went here. He applies to work at Opus every semester, but has never been hired. He has a show on WHCL, but has never gotten a good time slot—he’s always stuck with 1 am. He spends a lot of time in his room, and wears all black whenever he goes anywhere.

He’s an interdisciplinary major, and his neighbors say they hear him pounding on the walls in the middle of the night—by himself.

Bruce Wayne

(DC Comics) says he lives in a Fergusson single, but secretly lives in a Kirkland loft with his upperclassman friend Alfred Pennyworth. He plays on the football team, but is always late to practice. He is a member of DU, and their head of social programs. He plans great parties, but always seems to duck out of them early. When not working out, he spends a lot of time in the crow aviary, writing angst-ridden poetry that he submits to Red Weather under a pseudonym. He’s an econ and physics double major, and though he frequently skips class, he’s up at all hours of the night doing homework.

Jonathan Byers (Stranger Things) is an art

major who lives in a Macintosh single. He’s very into photography. His latest photo project was “A Study of the Beauty of the Human Form,” featuring the four girls he could convince to pose in their underwear. There’s a girl who works at the mail center he says is his muse, but he’s never talked to her, he just orders one pair of socks at a time so he has a reason to see her. He keeps to himself, and spends a lot of time skyping his family and friends from home. He and a couple other students spend a weird amount of time in the Glen, and he was once spotted with a bear trap, which he said was for his job with Physical Plant.

Buddy (Air Bud) is a light side jock. He’s the

star center on the Hamilton basketball team. He lives in a triple in Carnegie because he loves to be around people. He is a member of Student Assembly, and though he’s not the most active representative, he gets re-elected every year.

He eats lunch at the Little Pub every day (or as he thinks of it, the Little Pup). He’s an econ major, and every time he has an interview with a finance firm, he puts on his best bandana and his tail wags all day. There’s no rule that says a dog can’t go to Hamilton!

Stannis Baratheon (Game of Thrones)

is an RA in Skenandoa, where he makes sure all rules are strictly enforced. He serves as a representative to Student Assembly. He ran for SA vice-president, but lost, and has never really gotten over it. He also serves on the Honor Court, and is notorious for being very strict in the proceedings. He regularly hooks up with a dark side girl who dyes her hair red, but she doesn’t let him call her his girlfriend.
