All Yesterdays Gone ELENA

drew the heavy drapes apart and raised the Venetian blinds rattling them

unnecessarily, a morning ritual when one doesn’t expect an extraordinary event to take place, during an ordinary day but watches something that isn’t an everyday occurrence. The disturbing, grinding noise, the clatter, made her jump out of bed; the same bulldozer plus a crane were grinding their way uphill as the heavy bulldozer had done for weeks already. Six flights up and the maddening noise reached her as nerve wracking as if she were on the first floor. They won’t let up to let people sleep even on a Saturday, not that she ever slept late after a lifetime of alarm clocks and hasty six o’clock showers. Looking at the traffic mess the bulldozer was creating with its slow ascend, she remembered that it wasn’t Saturday after all; it was Friday. Lately she was forgetting things, simple, unimportant things and that was scary. What annoyed her more was the thought that she had to reconstruct recent events, names, memories, to back up to yesterday or the day before; to remember what she ate or where or with whom. It’s that silly construction from dawn to dusk her heart insisted, or hoped; trucks full of debris, bulldozers uphill, downhill, blasting... Face it Elena, she reminded herself as she plugged in the coffeepot. It’s not the bulldozers or the
