THE MODERN WEDDING GIFT LIST
EDITOR'S NOTES
No wedding day look is complete without some pretty accessories, and we found the perfect golden pieces to add a dusting of sparkle. The Moonstruck pendant and earring set from Ivory & Co provided a heavenly addition.
Our model Zoey wears a show-stopping golden gown by Savin London. The drop shoulders and unique neckline set it out from the crowd. Alice from ABK Make Up swept back Zoey's hair in an on-trend low bun, with some faceframing tendrils to soften the look. Natural make up with glossy rose lips finish the bridal style to perfection.
This pretty and ultra chic bouquet was the icing on the cake for our cover look. Created by Chic Weddings and Events, the white and green array features a stylish mix of blooms that would make any bride swoon.
Peeping out from under the gown were the divine Phoenix heels from Emmy London. The cream and gold shoes with a glorious beaded peacock-style feather are the epitome of elegance.
Anna-Marie DeSouza Editor
One of my very favourite people is getting married next year; I can’t wait to see her walk down the aisle and celebrate two fabulous people tie the knot. She asked me for some recommendations for photographers and other suppliers, and as happy as I was to offer my suggestions, I knew that, in the end, she would choose to work with whoever she got on best with – and that is absolutely what she should do. I remember receiving similar advice when I was prepping for my big day, and those sage words are something I hope all of you reading Confetti take on board, too. I went for a make up trial, and I knew almost instantly that the beautician didn’t really like the sound of what I was trying to achieve. She discussed three different looks for me, and told me which one I would look best with (although I knew it wouldn’t suit my style…or my skin tone). I wanted to look as natural as possible; so when she started applying the LONGEST fake eyelashes you can imagine, I began to suspect she wasn’t on my wavelength. So long were the falsies that I could barely see; but what I could see was an ultra bold finish with dark smokey eyes and an almost orange pout. It just didn’t look like me…which perhaps she thought was a good thing. Anyway, I digress. My point is, you’ll be spending the day surrounded by those that love you, and who you adore in return. So make sure that includes the boutique you buy your dress from, the person taking your pictures and the florist who will be translating your favourite blooms into a bouquet that suits you perfectly. Oh, and a make up artist that doesn’t make you look like a clown…

The happy couple tied the knot at Ed’s parents’ farm to make their wedding even more personal.“We had no set theme, but as I’m Sri Lankan, we tried to include traditions into the wedding as much as possible,” explains Shalini. “Kandyan dancers paraded us to the garden reception, we lit a traditional Sri Lankan lamp, served Sri Lankan food and gave our guests elephant cookie favours.”

There’ll be three big moments that you’ll always remember at the heart of your church wedding ceremony.
The first comes as you stand in the doorway of the church, pause, and then begin to walk down the aisle.
You’ll be walking in the footsteps of generations of brides before you. Whether you are surrounded by bridesmaids, walking with a father or a friend, or by yourself, whether you feel nervous or excited, or both, the church will hold an atmosphere that’s special and spiritual, which just can’t be replicated anywhere else.
Then you arrive at the front, your husband-to-be will be waiting for you and you’ll then make unique, timeless and amazing vows in the presence of your family, friends and God.
There’ll be another friendly face too – the vicar. You’ll have spent a lot of time with them beforehand. You’ll have shared your story with them, talked about your hopes for your wedding day, asked them for advice on hymns, readings and prayers. They will have helped you rehearse this moment and reassured you that they’ll do all they can to make things run smoothly, just as you want it to be.
The final unforgettable moment comes soon after this – when together, you walk back down the aisle, newly married and ready to celebrate with all your guests.
“To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish”
Special Day, Special Place
“Our advice would be, if you’ve got a dream for your wedding, don’t be afraid to ask the church what you can do. You might be surprised at the answer you get.”
Did you know..?
• You can be married in church regardless of whether you’re christened or not, and regardless of whether you regularly go to church or not.
• If either of you are divorced, there may well still be a way forward for having a church wedding –just ask the vicar to talk this through with you and they’ll explain what’s possible.
• If you already have children together, the vicar will make your children welcome too and will suggest ways of involving them on the day.
Just like any other wedding venue, getting married in church is a legal ceremony, so there are a few legal requirements. This applies to your choice of church and you may find that there are lots of beautiful churches where you can legally marry. Visit yourchurchwedding.org/find-a-church for more information.
Within the legal ceremony framework, a Church of England wedding is flexible to accommodate both traditional and unusual tastes. Many couples love the sound of a church organ, hymns and well-loved wedding readings, while others will want to be inventive and may decide they don’t want a ‘white’ wedding.
That is all possible in a church wedding, and the vicar can still help you plan a service with a difference.

QAm I being unrealistic to expect to achieve a social media free wedding?
AYou can try! Social media is often second nature, so while you can pull out all the stops, a few images may still end up online. Consider that most of your guests will have their phones, and they will, most likely, take pictures. If you don't want those photos to
the best time to mention this is with a note in your wedding invitations, and again at the speeches when everyone’s paying attention. As you've asked guests not to use smart phones, you could provide disposable or Polaroid cameras and a photo booth at your reception instead.

Real bride ADVICE
Plus ones…
“We had a rule that if we didn’t know someone’s partner personally, then they wouldn’t be invited. After the invitations were sent out, a couple of friends asked to bring their partners – we ended up agreeing they could. Not even a year later and those couples have split and we are left with wedding pictures including strangers. In hindsight, I wish we had stuck to our guns!”

Maids Checklist

• Be prepared with dresses, shoes, and accessories. Make sure you’ve double-checked that you all have every piece of attire. No missing earrings!
• Getting into a complicated wedding dress is a challenge in itself. Maids must be on hand to help with dressing.
• Have an emergency kit filled with deodorant, stain remover, a sewing kit etc. You’ll save so much stress by having this should the need arrive.
• Mix with the guests. The newlyweds may not immediately make their appearance at the reception, in which case it falls on the wedding party to keep guests entertained and to introduce those who have not met before.
• Dance your heart out! After the first dance, it's time for guests to join in the fun. A major bridesmaid duty is to lead by example and head to the dance floor.
TOP TIP
that you’ll be prepared for anything that might go wrong. We have heard horror stories where a but thankfully having insurance saved the day. And, if for any reason, you need to cancel your wedding, this will be a godsend.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL
Take the search for your wedding photographer seriously. You want someone who’s a professional, not just handy with a digital camera and a good website! Meet up with many weddings they have worked on and so on. See how they handle situations like bad weather or small spaces someone with experience and the ability to consistently capture great moments will be worth their weight in gold.
DON’T WAIT TOO LONG
that you get on with, that you like the style of and that has a good reputation, then book them! Good photographers will get busy a year or more in advance so they won’t have your date available forever. There's nothing more frustrating than choosing a photographer, waiting too long and then discovering someone else has snapped them up.
SET A SCHEDULE
Talk to your photographer when setting your schedule for the day. You need to consider things like shooting in natural light and what time of the day certain pictures will look best in. For example, midday sun can cast harsh,
schedule! Being an hour late somewhere can make or break your images. Don’t just assume it only takes 10 minutes to get the right shot!
REMEMBER THE DETAILS
Take some time to discuss what you’d like images of aside from the bridal party and guests. You may want to have all your table settings shot before people sit down, or the there may even be something that a friend or family member has made for you that you want to remember.
you to get photographed along with your table settings.
ASSISTANTS MATTER
If you want to save money, photography isn’t really the place to do it. You get what you pay for. Sometimes
hands, but consider this: the second photographer or assistant will provide another totally unique point of view throughout the entire day. The principle photographer can capture the moment you say 'I do' while the second can see what your guests' reactions are.
ORGANISE GUESTS
You can’t do this yourself, so designate your most organised and assertive friend to be in charge of gathering the right people for portraits. That person can direct them on what shots they’ll be in, and then thank them when they’re done.
AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS
photos’. They may think that they are doing you a favour, and they may get some great shots, but in reality they will almost always get in the way, making the professionals miss their shots and even making them feel uncomfortable. If this sounds like someone you know…. tell them to leave the camera at home and to just enjoy their time at the wedding.
LOOKING GOOD
Before the wedding, show your photographer pictures of yourself that you like and those that you don’t so that they can get a grasp of the angles you feel you look your best in. If you hate having your picture taken, try not to shy away. So, when you are walking down the aisle remember to look up and smile, or at least keep your head up. Your photographer can also make sure to get lots of candid shots so you don’t have to feel on show all the time.
EMBRACE THE TREND FOR FIRST LOOKS
glimpse of each other before the ceremony. It’s a great way to get some really intimate and personal shots away from the eyes of the crowd. This is a great way to ensure you have plenty of couple shots and don’t feel rushed to get the guests photographed before the sun goes down!

Kids or no kidsTHE BIG DEBATE
WE SPEAK TO TWO BRIDES– ONE WHO INVITED CHILDREN TO HER WEDDING AND ONE WHO DIDN’T. THEY EXPLAIN WHY IT WAS THE RIGHT DECISION FOR THEM
Yes to kids! Children make the wedding day extra special...
No kids allowed! You should be able to host an adult only day...
"We
wanted everyone to be a part of our wedding. Inviting children
didn't affect the day at all – if anything it made it even better"
Tammy Lyon happily invited children to her wedding when she married her husband Craig in September 2007. Their five-month-old son Henry and two-year-old daughter Isobel were also a big part of the celebration. Tammy says: “It felt so lovely and special to share our big day with our children. It was a celebration of our family and not just of us as husband and wife. My girl and I love looking at all the makes the day feel extra special. travelling from Glasgow to Solihull for the wedding, there was no way she could leave such a young baby at home. All of Craig’s family live in Glasgow so it was invited children, none of his family with kids would leave them behind with babysitters. It meant so much at all, if anything it made it better. I was concerned some parents might not enjoy the evening but they still had a great time. Feeding children wasn’t a problem either and they were easily catered for as we had a ceremony or through the speeches, but I think it’s more perfect when it’s not perfect. Our day felt really informal and fun, which is exactly what we wanted.”
Emma Bardsley had a strict no-children rule at her wedding when she married her husband Craig in September 2011.
Emma says: “I was adamant that I didn’t want kids at my wedding, in my opinion they would have spoilt the day. I just wanted to let my hair down, to relax and not have to worry about running around after children. It did annoy a few of our guests and unfortunately some come. However, I think if you really want to be a part

children at weddings changes the dynamic. Some parents have to go to bed early, they can’t drink as much or can’t enjoy themselves fully. You also end up with a about me and Craig, it was our day. I’ve been to so many weddings where children are shouting and screaming during the speeches. As parents you don’t get much time for fun, so I think our times of fun should not be interrupted by children. I also think it’s disrespectful for any guests to be grumpy if they can’t bring their kids. It’s up to the couple who they do and do not want to invite to a day that has essentially cost them thousands of pounds.”

Guest lists MADE SIMPLE
Who should you invite to your big day? If you don’t know where to begin, this handy guide will help you formulate a realistic list…
KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Before you can begin, it’s important to think about your wedding budget. Unfortunately for many, it’s not always possible to invite everyone you want. It goes without saying that the more guests you invite, the more expensive the wedding becomes. Many venues publish set price per head costs online, which can give you a good indication of the number
total budget. If you’ve already booked your venue, or you’re
venue’s capacity, too. It’s better to be conservative than can and can’t make it.
DECIDE WHO TO INVITE
Traditionally, the guest list was the responsibility of the bride’s parents, who would be footing the bill; nowadays most couples pay for their special day themselves. If this is the case, you’ll need to decide together how to split the guest list. It’s easy to think there should be a 50/50 split, but that's not always the case. Remember to consider who you really want to spend your day with and who you’re make up numbers.
FAMILY & FRIENDS
dearest, making a list of your immediate family and the
that you don’t feel you have to invite everyone you know
because there’s a family connection, it doesn’t mean they should automatically receive an invite. Similarly with friends, think about who you have spoken to and heard from recently and only invite those that are special to you.
COLLEAGUES
Depending on how well you get along with your colleagues, you may want to invite them to your wedding. If you work in a small team and feel uncomfortable only inviting a few and leaving others, it’s worth considering inviting them all to the evening reception instead. If you wouldn’t meet with your shouldn’t be invited.
PLUS ONES
Adding a plus one to your single friends’ invitations will drastically increase your overall wedding size, so, if you’re struggling to stick to budget, being ruthless with this can be a smart option. It’s completely understandable that you wouldn’t want your single friends to be lonely, but allowing plus ones could result in people you hardly know attending your special day. If you’re feeling uneasy about the decision, why not have a singles table at your wedding so your friends don’t feel left out and can mingle?
DON’T FEEL GUILTY
it’s your wedding and the decision lies with you. It’s easy to let family dictate your decisions or to feel you should invite someone to your wedding solely because you
who you actually want to be celebrating with you. Those that complain about your choices are not worth having there anyway and, most of the time, people will understand and know how stressful the situation can be.

Part your hair down the middle into two equal sections on the left and right, and tie one side out of the way. Pick up a triangle shaped section at your hairline and divide it into three. Start your braid by crossing the side strands underneath the middle strand. Next, start incorporating hair into the side strands and continue crossing them under the middle strand, plaiting the left section into a Dutch braid from the hairline to the nape of the neck. Gently pull on the edges of the braid to make it fuller, then tie the end. Repeat on the other side and then combine the two braids together and tie into a low ponytail. Remove the elastics from the individual plaits and divide off a small section from the ponytail and wrap it around the band, pinning it underneath. Braid the ponytail into a fishtail by splitting it in half and crossing small sections from the outer edges over to the opposite side until reaches the ends. Pull on the edges of the braid to make it fuller and tie.

Soft, glamorous waves
then pin the curl at the base to hold.
3 Repeat this process until you have completed your whole head - it is often easier to start at the top and work your way down on both sides. Once you have tonged and pinned every section, apply hairspray all over. Let it set for 15 to 20 minutes.
4 Carefully unpin each section from the bottom up. At this stage you want to avoid breaking the shape.
1 Brush hair through making sure that there aren’t any knots, and then you need to create a side parting. You can use the arch of your eyebrow as positioning.
2 Start taking one inch sections of hair sideways from your parting. Wrap the hair around a hot tong, and
5 Take a Maison and Pearson brush, and using the edge of it, brush carefully from the parting down across the whole head. Apply hairspray directly onto the brush to prevent the hair from getting static.
6 Brush again, focussing on the ends, to create waves and movement, applying more hairspray for a longlasting effect. That’s it - you’re all set.
This up do gives a nod to Meghan Markle’s signature style. It’s demure and pretty, with a little height, making it a great style for all face shapes. It’s engagement shoot or for a sophisticated day out with
1 Part your hair in the middle and follow steps one to three of the previous guide. For this style, you’re just trying to add a little texture for volume - so you don’t have to be quite as delicate.
2 Separate the top and bottom of your hair, as if you were trying to tie back your hair in a top knot style. Pin the upper section gently out of the way.
3 Take a snag free hair band, and tie the bottom
section of your hair into a low ponytail.
4 Take another hair elastic and pull the ponytail half way through, to create a bun-style look.
5 Moving back to the top of your hair, take the section to the right of your parting, cross it over to the left side of the bun, leaving some of the wave exposed, and pin into place. Take the section to the left of your parting, cross it over to the right and repeat.
6 Take a pearl hairpin, or something equally as pretty, and place it where the two pieces of hair cross the chignon. For extra security, you can use additional bobby pins if required.
7 Apply a good spritz of hairspray for a long lasting effect, and if you want to relax the look, pull out some soft tendrils from the top of your parting to frame your face.
If you’re marrying outdoors, this no-fuss, high-fashion style is perfect for you. Use a beautiful accessory to sweep your bouncing blow dry off your face and match with ultra-luxe make-up – we’re talking metallic eyes and perfectly highlighted cheekbones that will look breathtaking in your wedding photos.

Dishevelled texture adds a modern twist to the classic low ponytail. Tong tousled waves into your hair before scooping it into a loose ponytail, and gently teasing sections out to achieve this artfully messed up style.
LOOSE BRAID
BEST FOR: Classic brides
Rather than the intricately detaile d braids we’ve seen before, back to basics plaits are having a real moment this year. Sidestep the countless deftly intertwined strands; this look is all about the classic plait, a style that takes us back to our childhood in the best possible way. As with many traditional hairstyles, the great news is it suits any kind of wedding gown, too.
HIGH BUN
BEST FOR: Glam brides
Brides dreaming of a princessworthy look on their wedding day will love this chic, high bun. It exudes sophistication, without being overly fussy. Keep the style from being too severe with loose tendrils, or add fresh flowers for a boho vibe. The best thing about this ‘do? If strands escape when you’re on the dance floor it’ll just add to the effortlessly undone look.
TEXTURED BOB
BEST FOR: Trendsetting brides
Short hair looks every bit as fabulous as long locks, as this modern bob proves. Add height at the front and tong the lengths to add movement and volume to this cool style. Pared back hair like this would work wonderfully with a feminine wedding dress with bow detailing and a full skirt.
LOW BUN
BEST FOR: Polished brides
Undone ELEGANCE
This wedding season we’re seeing brides embrace a low-key approach to their w-day hair; gone are pristine hairstyles in favour of a laid-back, perfectly imperfect look
In contrast to the laid-back look of the high bun, this low bun is sleek and smooth, but without slicked back ballerina vibes.. Wear with statement earrings, a sweetheart neckline and feline flicked eyeliner to amp up the glamour.

We were advised to set up our wedding gift list a good few months before the big day.
