After chatting to a group of friends, I discovered that – on reflection –every single one of us would change something about our wedding. Was it fashion decisions? Venue choices or entertainment? The amount of booze or food choice? In fact, it was a little bit of everything. The common factor is that the elements we would change were all done to please other people. One friend didn't love her wedding dress; she decided on it because it was her mum’s favourite, and her mum hadn’t liked what she felt was her actual dream dress. Another friend was irritated about the, in his words, “random family members” in attendance. He hadn’t talked to them for years before, and hasn’t talked to them since – his parents insisted on inviting them. Another pal regrets following traditions. She said they hadn’t practiced the first dance, so it felt awkward and she hated everyone gathering round and looking at her. She also didn't like spending the night before the wedding apart from her spouse-to-be, she said: “If you’re planning the biggest party of your life, why would you cut yourself o from the joint party planner.” And now me… We didn’t o er plus ones, everyone in attendance was part of a family group or bigger circle of friends, so nobody would feel alone or awkward. That said, a couple of people asked if they could bring their new partners at the time – and we hadn’t actually met either of them. We said yes, then both those couples shortly split up, and now we have people (who’s names I don’t remember) all over our wedding photos. I wish we had just stuck to our guns and said no. But my other half is a massive people pleaser and I’m the world’s biggest push over (what a match). Anyway, the point in me telling you all of this is, it’s perfectly fine to have regrets, everyone does. But, don’t have regrets based on decisions you are making for other people. It’s your wedding, you should have everything as you want it – it genuinely doesn’t matter what anyone else’s opinion is. If you don’t want to invite your family that you aren’t close to, then don’t. If you aren’t keen on speeches, don’t include them. And if you don’t want to wear a white dress, then there is a spectrum of colours you can rock instead. It’s your wedding, do it your way – we know this issue will inspire you to do just that.

Kennedy and Alex first met in 2015, after being introduced by Kennedy’s dad at an ice hockey game. “I’m from Utah and Alex is from Elgin in Scotland,” explains Kennedy. “He was out here playing ice hockey. As soon as we met, we both felt an instant connection. But, as Alex is quite shy, we didn’t talk to each other.” It wasn’t until after they got home and found each other on social media that the conversation started flowing.
After Alex proposed to Kennedy on a beach in Scotland, the soulmates began planning their wedding at Alex’s dad’s home. “We decided to have a humanist wedding in a marquee – my family is very Christian but Alex’s family isn’t, so we didn’t want to offend anyone,” she says.
The couple wed in June 2022, with a beautiful summer garden theme. They kept things simple by decorating the tables with vintage vases filled with colourful wild flowers and fresh blooms from the garden, alongside pastel-coloured candles. “It turned out perfectly, and exactly how I envisioned it,” says Kennedy.
For her big day look, Kennedy employed Pritchett Bridal in Utah to custom-make her dream gown – a fitted white dress with sheer puff sleeves, beautifully enhanced with intricate beadwork – while Alex wore a traditional kilt made by Pam of W Blackhall, a small kilt making shop in Aberdeenshire. “He chose the same Forbes Tartan that matched the colour and pattern of his father’s kilt, which was also handmade by Pam years ago,” says Kennedy.
Catering for both their Scottish and American guests, the couple served two options for each course: a BBQ pulled pork slider or a battered haddock wrap to start; a choice between a slow-cooked smoked Brisket or a baked chicken breast for the main; and to finish, either a classic summer fruit cheesecake or Cranachan – a traditional Scottish pudding. “Everything was perfect and delicious,” says Kennedy. They finished the celebrations with traditional Scottish cèilidh dancing.
Planning tip If you organise the wedding yourself, give yourself plenty of time. And, if it gets too much, don’t be afraid to ask your bridesmaids, groomsmen and family for help.

Verity had planned to propose to Juliet at her favourite restaurant. But that same night, Verity's best friend Tom stole her thunder by asking her to be best person for him at his wedding. With her plans scuppered, she decided to go ahead and propose anyway, after dinner at a coffee shop. Juliet said yes immediately.
Soon after, the couple began looking for a venue that could hold 60 guests. They finally opted for Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham, London, where they could have their ceremony in the beautiful Grade I Listed Octagon Room, followed by a vintage afternoon tea party in the on-site Coach House. “The venue is beautiful and everyone employed there was an absolute dream,” says Verity.
The couple hired external caterers for their big day, who came recommended by the venue. “Jam and Tea were amazing. We couldn’t fault them,” says Juliet. They also provided the wedding cake – a delicious two-tiered vegan naked cake, decorated with fruit and berries. Wine, tea, coffee and beer were also served, along with a selection of homemade lemonades.
To achieve the vintage look, Verity and her mum sourced a collection of mismatched crockery and vases from various charity shops and had their florist, Jessica Eliza Flowers, fill the vases with a stunning array of pastel-hued wildflowers.
“We found her on Instagram and immediately fell in love with her beautiful, delicate style,” says Juliet.
The personal vibe continued as Juliet’s mum made both of the brides' gowns. “We both looked at lots of different styles for inspiration, which helped us decide on what we wanted to wear,” says Verity. “We wanted to ensure they would complement each other on the day.”
Getting married at the beginning of August 2021 meant that there were still some pandemic restrictions in place. So, instead of dancing, the couple organised a pub quiz, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all their guests. They then served a nacho bar in the evening to finish off the fun and relaxed vibe of this special day.
Planning tip Keep the day simple and try not to get bogged down with what people expect. Remember, it’s your wedding!

After being introduced by mutual friends in May 2018, Donna and Archie knew they had found something special in each other. Fastforward to March 13th 2021, the day before Mother’s Day, and Archie proposed. “He had arranged for our one-year-old son to be minded by our friends whilst he decorated our music room with candles, Champagne and a picnic style lunch,” says Donna. “Our song was playing when I came down the stairs. He said he wanted to show me something, bent down to open a guitar case and produced a box with a beautiful ring. It was very emotional.”
Nearly four years to the day of meeting, the couple tied the knot at St Peter’s Ad Vincula Church in Coggeshall – with their little boy as ring bearer. Donna wore a beautiful A-line dress by Evie Young. “It was dreamy, comfortable and I fell in love with it as soon as I tried it on at Abigail’s Collection in Colchester,” she says. She teamed it with a pair of green velvet shoes from Forever Soles based in Brisbane. Archie wore a tanned suede jacket that he had bought when they visited New York together in 2019. “I was pregnant at the time, so it has sentimental value,” says Donna.
From the start, the couple wanted their wedding to have a festival theme; they fell in love with the Browning Bros venue at Chalkney Water Meadows in Colchester. The woodland setting and lake felt perfect for them. “They have log cabins there, which we hired for the weekend, along with glamping tents, which many of our guests stayed in – including us on our wedding night! We danced around the fire pit after the party was over and slept under the stars,” says Donna.
In keeping with the festival theme, with a dusting of rock ‘n’ roll, the venue was decorated with air flags, bunting,
pampas and festoon lighting. As Donna’s family is Irish, the colours were based on the Irish flag. The bridesmaids wore dark orange, white and sage green dresses, which also matched the ribbons in Donna’s bouquet. “Our friends have the most beautiful eucalyptus tree on their property, and we used this to style all the tables,” says Donna. “We added lace table runners and empty bottles of spirits with orange and white tall candles to complete the look.”
To add to the personal feel, the couple made a lot of the decorations themselves. This included festival style direction signs and a welcome banner. “We made a special ‘in loving memory’ display on one of the trees, which everyone loved and spent time at.”
Guests were treated to an open bar, which included barrels of ale from The Fat Cat pub in Colchester. “We hired Blackwells Farm Shop to do all our food for the day. They served guests with the most delicious canapés. Then there was a BBQ spread served to tables and a hog roast in the evening!”
Planning tip: For a DIY wedding, get all the big stuff booked ASAP, and then start buying decorations each month leading up to the wedding – we started 10 months before.

The tables were decorated with eucalyptus from a friend's tree. The candles were chosen to reflect the colours of the Irish flag in homage to Donna's family roots
Niamh and Jonah’s parents had been friends since the 1990s, which meant the couple had known each other all their lives. However, it wasn’t until Jonah invited Niamh to see Foals at Leeds O2 Academy, that their friendship blossomed into something more. “After that first date, we basically spent the whole summer together and have been with each other ever since,” says Niamh. With their family playing a big part in their blossoming relationship, it’s hardly surprising that Jonah asked them all to be there at the proposal, which was planned during the pandemic. “Jonah asked me to marry him at the Golden Acre Park in Leeds. His mum, who sadly passed away, has a memorial bench under the blossom trees there,” says Niamh, “Our family hid in the park and surprised us after I said yes! Then we went to the pub to celebrate.”
For their wedding day in January 2022, they chose a late afternoon service at Leeds Civic Hall, followed by an evening
Planning tip If you’re getting married later in the day, consider doing a first look photoshoot before the ceremony. It takes away some of the nerves and allows you time to have a drink together before seeing your guests.
reception with 18 guests at The Reliance. “We knew we wanted something chilled and intimate,” says Niamh. They found the venue via Instagram and immediately fell in love with the look of the food and cocktail menu, as well as the beer on tap. “We also loved the venue itself, with its wooden floors, long tables and tall windows. Plus, they even offered to design us a bespoke menu, which was really cool of them.”
The couple’s wedding style was informal and relaxed, with Niamh opting for a super simple, yet elegant white dress from Whistles, with a leather jacket over the top, and Jonah wearing a timeless black tux from DKNY. It suited their desire for something unique and not too traditional. Niamh’s bouquet was full of luscious white blooms and green foliage, and her bridesmaids wore sage green dresses from House of CB. This colour scheme was also carried through to the decorations at the reception, with one long table covered in flower-filled jars, along with favours for their guests – cans of beer from Leeds’s own North Brew and the couple’s favourite bubble gum and sour watermelon sweets
They served a delicious three-course meal starting with grilled artichoke and cured smoked salmon, followed by north sea cod or pork belly, and baked cheesecake for dessert. For drinks, the guests helped themselves to Aperol spritz, old-fashioned cocktails and pints of beer

Slim and sleek silhouettes havetimelessappeal.A beautifully cut and sculpted gown can give o real goddess vibes, and the lack of adornment means that the quality of the dress can shine through. There is no one silhouette that defines this look, but we’re loving the return of minimalist slip dresses, as well as the form of fit-and-flair styles. GROOM ’ S EDIT
We’ve put together the best buys, tips and trends for your big day…
We know it’s not just the bride who wants to make a statement with her wedding day look. Today’s grooms are also looking to feel their best – and when it comes to fashion, there’s plenty to fit the bill. From suave tuxedos to informal destination attire, you’ll find lots of options across the latest collections.
In terms of trends, black tie suits are really popular and coloured velvet dinner jackets offer a unique twist. Crafted from quality fabrics and with impeccable tailoring, the traditional morning suit isn’t going anywhere either. But, if you want something a bit different, there are ways to upgrade your look instead. We love jacquard and floral print jackets to add a pop of colour! However, if you don’t want something so bold, then relaxed styling will always be a winner. If you’re after an easy-going look, you’ll love the choice of suits in natural earthy tones made from lightweight or tweed fabrics. And, what if you’re planning a wedding abroad? Linen suits in soft shades are always a great investment. The stylish ensemble from Slater Menswear, pictured here, ticks all the right boxes for a seriously cool, pareddown look.

Q&A
Jim Shaw, award-winning men’s hairdresser and owner of Toni&Guy Billericay, chats all things hair…
How many months before the wedding should men start thinking about their big day hair?
It’s a good idea to start thinking about your cut and style a few months before the wedding. This way, you can come into the salon, chat it through and trial the cut first to ensure you like it. You’ll also get the chance to see how it looks freshly cut and will have time to experiment with styling – trialling out polished, sleek looks as well as more messy and effortless styles.
What will be some of the big hair trends for grooms marrying next year?
Sleek styles are really on trend for grooms – think quiffs, comb overs and pompadours that may involve the hair being slightly longer on the top and shorter on the sides. The shorter cuts that have been popular in 2022, including the buzz cut and crew cut, will also be more requested! We will also continue to see men embracing long hair and natural curls, but these styles will be polished in appearance, using curl-enhancing products that give body and dimension.
Are there specific products or treatments that you recommend before the wedding?
I always recommend men come into the salon for a hair treatment and use hair masks at home in the lead-up to the wedding. This will keep hair looking its best and free from damage and split ends. On days when you aren’t using a hair mask or treatment, always use a conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and shiny. Hair oils and serums are also great products to invest in – they can be applied on damp or dry hair and will provide further nourishment while banishing frizz and fl yaways.
Jim’s top 3 styling tips:
1 For an effortless style, spritz texture spray into damp hair and scrunch in before leaving to air dry.
2 Lacking volume and want an instant boost? Try changing from a middle parting to a side parting.
3 To help a slicked-back look retain its shape, apply product (such as a wax, pomade or gel) and use a hairdryer and brush to move the direction of your hair – this will keep it in place all day.
Contemporary COLOUR
If you want to stand out with a cool check suit, this might be your perfect option. Blue wedding suits will never go out of style, and with checks in a rust orange hue, this is a modern and fashionforward take. We love how it’s styled with a matching tie and pocket square –fresh, polished and right on trend.
ALL IN WHITE
It doesn’t have to only be the bride who wears white! White suits and tuxedos are becoming more popular and can be styled in many ways. For a formal look, match a white tuxedo with black tie accessories. Or, for something more casual, choose a jacket in a warmer, o white shade.

Rachel & Lawrence Purvis
Wedding & reception venue: Syrencot, Salisbury
Date: 22 July 2021
Our story: “We wanted somewhere with a mix of modern and rustic character. When driving down the venue’s long approach on our first visit, it was raining quite heavily, but we were still blown away. We immediately fell in love with the location. We thought wow, if we love it on a rainy day, imagine how we’ll feel here if our wedding day was bright and sunny! What stood out was how much character the wedding breakfast room had. As a blank canvas, the open-plan bar and dining area all in one room and the amazing chandelier lights had so much going for it. Plus, the greenhouse ceremony room is really bright and beautiful, with
the choice of an indoor or outdoor ceremony depending on the weather. I’m also a make-up artist, so I know how important it is to have somewhere with space and light to get ready on the morning of your wedding day, and Syrencot has a bridal prep room and bridal suite available for the wedding party to use. If I was to offer one piece of advice to other brides and grooms when choosing a wedding venue, it would be to go with your gut and don’t sweat the small stuff, no-one will even know if your day doesn’t go according to plan!”
Our story: “When we started looking for a venue, we began searching for somewhere where we could both get married and hold our reception at. We also knew that we wanted our wedding theme to be very grand and romantic. As soon as we saw Boreham House, we knew it was the one. You arrive at the venue via a gate and drive through an avenue of trees adorned by a beautiful lake before you reach Boreham House. The entrance is really impressive and we knew it would make our day memorable for both us and our guests. We also loved the idea of tying the knot and having our reception in a Grade l listed mansion. The reception room is filled with original paintings, and wherever you looked there was a glimpse of history, which made it feel very

Wedding venue: Old Marylebone Town Hall, London
Reception venue: Landmark Hotel, London
Date: 29 January 2022
Our story: “We were set on having our ceremony at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in London and wanted the reception to be within walking distance. As soon as we entered the reception at the Landmark, we saw the atrium roof and palm trees and knew it was the one. We loved the intimacy of the Tower Suites, where we had our reception meal, as well as the large atrium roof and glass windows looking down into the hotel, which provided great ambiance as the light faded from day to night. As it was going to be a small wedding party of 23, we wanted a large round table for us to all sit at together, rather than individual smaller groups, which the Landmark Hotel
accommodated. Plus, the service of the staff was amazing, they made us feel extra special on the day itself. I think this is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a venue. Your wedding day is inevitably going to be stressful, so finding a venue with staff that go above and beyond is a necessity – which we were lucky enough to have at both the Town Hall as well as the Landmark Hotel.”
luxurious. The location and views are amazing, too, with the reception doors opening out into the beautifully landscaped gardens with rolling countryside beyond. It felt incredible to say our vows in such a stunning setting and I really loved taking photos in the mansion and outside in the venue’s grounds.”

Wedding & reception venue: Owen House Wedding Barn, Cheshire
Date: 2 May 2022
Our story: “We originally thought we would get married at a church, but when we looked at Owen House as a reception venue and walked into the ceremony room, it just felt right to have our service here as well. We loved the laid-back, relaxed rustic setting, but we also loved that the venue caters for both the bride and groom on the morning of your wedding day. You have access to a beauty shed for the ladies and the Baa-BER shed for the men. It was the only venue that had space for both sides of the wedding party, which we felt was important as it was both of our special day! The set-up of the venue is great, too. As the bride makes her entrance, she has to walk past all her guests to get to the aisle, and seeing all the faces of our friends and family was so lovely. There’s also a shooting gallery that only the bride and groom get access to, so we were able to spend time

Wedding venue: Room 99 at Islington Town Hall
Reception venue: Prawn on the Lawn, London
Date: 20 May 2022
Our story: “We had a small ceremony of only 14 people at Islington Town Hall, followed by ice cream canapés at Udderlicious, before heading on to the private dining room at Prawn on the Lawn for the wedding breakfast. We’ve lived in Islington for years and always loved the town hall building, which was built in the 1920s. We didn’t want anything too fancy, so a fuss-free 20-minute ceremony was perfect. Prawn on the Lawn, our favourite restaurant, just happens to be a 10-minute walk from the town hall, so having dinner there was a no brainer. We kept all the
together having a dance and some photos on our own. Our day couldn’t have been any more perfect, the staff were all amazing and did everything that we could have asked to make our day run as smoothly as possible.”
decorations simple, recyclable and DIY – my mum did the flowers and my niece, who is fab at calligraphy, did the place name cards. The staff at Prawn on the Lawn were fantastic – they were so flexible with the timings of our day, as well as allowing us to tailor the menu. As we had a small group, we were able to splurge a decent chunk of our budget on a gorgeous meal for our guests. We had oysters and cocktails as appetisers, followed by tapas-style starters, including seared tuna, Thai scallops and crab salad with daikon. For the main course it was fresh monkfish and seabass from the fish counter, with spicy crushed potatoes. The food was divine and it was the ideal setting for the intimate celebration we were after.”

THE DETA ILS
TABLE DECOR, BEAUTY TREATS, CAKES, STATIONERY, DREAM GIFT LISTS & MORE
This hand-tied bouquet from The Real Flower Company is a total dream. It features sustainably grown British peonies and a mix of other seasonal flowers. It’s the ideal match for a garden party wedding or for a bride with a boho heart.
Seasonal blooms: Picking your florals
Using British-grown flowers for your wedding is a great way to embrace the UK’s talented florists and flower farmers. No matter what time of year you choose to tie the knot, there will be a varied selection of blooms that will reflect the season. Spring and summer have a bounty of pretty pastel and vibrant blush tones, there is a gorgeous mix of hues from oranges to deep greens that define autumn, and the rich jewel colours of winter are majestic. Here are some of our favourite British grown options to discuss with your florist.
Spring: Anemone • Lily of the Valley
• Lilac • Tulips • Ranunculus
Summer: Peonies • Sweet William
• Roses • Hydrangea
Autumn: Dahlia • Delphinium
• Gladioli • Poppy
Winter: Ivy Berries • Pussy Willow
• Hyacinth • Hellebores
And the bride
The Delilah dress by Wtoo is a delicate work of art, woven from a tapestry of Bixby Burnout
Embroidered tulle. The dress is finished to perfection with the bride’s stunning make-up look. Fresh and glossy, with a warm flash of colour, this is a spring and summer look that feels gorgeous and contemporary. For flawless skin, primer is a must, and this is what’ll help your W-day make-up stay put all day long. Pick a foundation that’s not overly matt so you can achieve a dewy finish and, make sure you don’t skip the setting powder stage to fix everything in place and keep oily skin at bay. Don’t feel intimidated by an orange lip either; it has versatile undertones and there’s a flattering shade for everyone. For warm skin, redish oranges look amazing and, on fairer skin tones, coral is a perfect match. This is THE colour for darker skin, too, think pretty corals, rich pumpkin tones and even vibrant electric shades.

BOHO LUXE STYLING
Hopeless romantics will fall in love with the whimsical decor created for this pretty and relaxed wedding
Photography: Laura Williams, laurawilliamsweddings.co.uk, Instagram: @laurawilliamsweddings
Relaxed and effortlessly chic, this dreamy wedding has been styled to boho perfection. Soft muted colours, the prettiest pinks, as well as a mix of fresh flowers, dried flowers and grasses are a beautiful combination. Waresley Park offers an idyllic setting for this romantic occasion. The house is set amongst 120-acres of beautifully landscaped parkland, laid out by Humphrey Repton, a student of Capability Brown. The house dates back to 1934 and oozes French elegance. Its chateau style is nothing short of picturesque. There’s a bounty of formal gardens that surround the house, including manicured lawns, a picturesque walled garden and enchanting woodlands.
The table setting is given a glorious focal point thanks to the amazing wooden arch, decorated with strings of vintage style lightbulbs with a soft and alluring glow. The floral arrangements in each corner are the perfect match for this boho look, adding plenty of depth and texture to the setting – we can imagine the grasses and flowers gently moving in the breeze. Soft brass tones for the cutlery and candlesticks add to the vintage aesthetic and offer some old-school glamour. A ruched table runner is annotated with small white vases, filled with fresh and dried flowers, and small jar candles make the ideal wedding favours. Woven matts and rustic ceramics look amazing next to the tall pink candlesticks.
The bride wears three totally different looks, but each match the wedding’s boho styling perfectly. The pink jumpsuit from Felisiti Greis is oh so pretty with its long and flowing fabric and gorgeous 3D floral detail at the neckline. The long lace dress by Miller White offers an elegant touch in the most alluring all-over lace – it is the embodiment of romance. Finally, a mini dress with brilliantly retro vibes by Rose Savage is the ideal change of pace for a night of dancing and partying.

MONTERCHI
This stunning village overlooks the Apennine and offers unmatched views over fields of sunflowers. This is the ideal destination for lovers of art to tie the knot, as the town is rich in art history – it is home to a famous fresco by the quattrocento artist Piero della Francesca, painted between 1455 and 1465, which can be seen at the Civic Museum of Monterchi. SANTORINI, GREECE
If you’re dreaming of marrying overseas, the picturesque islands of Greece will no doubt be on your radar. Recently, some of the lesser-known islands have been catching attention, but Santorini will always be a favourite! With its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and breathtaking views, it’s easy to see why –this is a romantic destination that delivers an utterly magical backdrop. Across the island, you’ll find a wonderful choice of venues, with lots of options for a civil ceremony or symbolic blessing. For jaw-dropping views, we recommend checking out the beautiful Le Ciel. This luxury restaurant hosts weddings on their terrace, so you can expect incredible photos as you overlook the sea. And when evening falls? You’ll be in a prime position for one of Santorini’s sensational sunsets.
LAS VEGAS, USA
For a fun and lively affair, you’ll want to consider Las Vegas. This US city is known worldwide for its weddings – and not only the elopements you see in the movies! As a city of celebration, Vegas offers many great places to say ‘I do’ – from iconic chapels to romantic outdoor venues and classic fairytale settings. If you’re after a luxury wedding, Vegas should be high on your list. With its huge selection of lavish venues, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking your favourite. Caesars Palace is famous for good reason – and it’s one you’ll want to note if you’re after dreamy surroundings and next-level service. But, if a simple affair is more your thing, Vegas is still amazing. Pretty chapels are found in abundance with lots of options for hosting a fuss-free, intimate and unforgettable ceremony.
Cast away any notions you have of Ibiza because this is a really romantic spot for a boho wedding. Boasting glorious scenery and sun-drenched beaches, this Mediterranean island does barefoot bliss like no other. Of course, the nightlife is well known, so if you’re after a lively fiesta, this island has you covered. But, for those wanting zen, Ibiza has pretty villages, secluded coves and quiet venues away from the party scene, too. It really is no wonder that so many couples love this paradise island and choose it for their vows! With beautiful fincas, trendy beach clubs and stunning restaurant venues, you’ll find lots of options in heavenly surroundings. One of our favourites is Amante, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the bay of Sol d’en Serra. Set in an area of natural beauty, this is an idyllic spot for a wedding.
South Africa is a diverse country that offers so much more than safaris and vast open plains. An incredible destination with stunning landscapes, it has a plethora of options when it comes to tying the knot. In recent years, we’ve seen so many couples jetting to this country for an overseas wedding that really wows. And, while we love the idea of a safari-centric wedding, one region that comes out on top is the gorgeous Cape Winelands. Here, in South Africa’s wine capital, you’ll find magnificent scenery and exceptional properties for a back-to-nature wedding. There are several venues in the area that will impress your guests, including the luxury L’Atrium at Grande Roche. Set in the foothills of Paarl Rock, this is a sophisticated venue that makes the most of its breathtaking natural surroundings.

AMALFI COAST, ITALY
There aren’t many places that do romance as well as Italy. This is a country that visitors flock to thanks to its interesting cities, quaint colourful villages and enchanting natural scenery. The Amalfi Coast is one of the country’s prized regions and it’s a wonderful setting for an elegant coastal wedding. Rather than sandy shores, here you’ll be treated to picturesque pebbly bays, rich historical charm and plenty of sparkling sea vistas. Boutique hotels and luxe villas are the venues of choice and you’ll find many cliffside options with terraces that are perfect for an alfresco affair. If - like many - Positano is on your vision board, make sure you check out the beautiful Villa Oliviero. This family-run villa is a stylish spot for a wedding, with views that are sure to take your breath away.
TULUM, MEXICO
We love Mexico as a honeymoon destination and it’s also great for getting hitched. Many ceremonies take place in the all-inclusive resorts of Cancun, but Tulum is ideal if you want a rustic wedding with laid-back charm. Located on the Caribbean coast, this part of the country has everything you could want for a tropical beach wedding. Lush palms, crystal clear waters and white sand beaches sum Tulum up perfectly – it’s a paradise destination that delivers a divine backdrop for your vows. Destination WEDDING Q&A
We answer your most common questions about saying 'I do' overseas
QWe want a small destination wedding, just us. Can we celebrate again when we are home?
Yes, yes and yes! This is what a lot of couples end up doing – having an elopement style affair or a small and intimate gathering overseas, with closest family and friends, and then a reception back in the UK. Remember the rules, your wedding your way! If you want to, you can have a full-on wedding reception – the white dress, band, cake, seated meal – or, you can host something more relaxed. You could have a garden party, a BBQ or a fun cocktail party in the evening.
QWhat’s the best way to get the itinerary to our guests?
You will have enough to juggle and plan in the run up to your wedding, and the last thing you want to do is answer 101 questions from Aunty Gladys or your ditzy pal John. We would recommend setting up a wedding website – this way you can have all the up-to-date information available to your guests, and they can easily access it from their phone or laptop. You can have your wedding day timeline, maps, useful phone numbers and more on here. If you want an extra layer of help, designate one of the bridal party to set up a WhatsApp group, that you are not in, where other guests can message them if they are confused about anything.
QWe know guests will have spent a fortune getting to our wedding. Should we forgo asking for gifts?
This is a totally personal choice. Some of your guests will want to get you something as a gesture of appreciation. Others will be pushed to the limit
of their budget. Our advice is to tell guests that their presence is the best present, but if they want to get you something, you have a wedding fund or gift registry that they can take a look at.
QHow far in advance should we let our guests know we want to get married abroad?
As soon as you have made the decision, you could let your inner circle know – giving them ample time to make arrangements so that they can attend. More formally, think about sending out save the dates with location details around seven or eight months in advance. Then, your full invitation can follow around four to six months in advance. Your guests will all need to plan ahead with work commitments, maybe child care, and also just to save up some money, so give them plenty of warning.
QHow will I transport my dress?
First things first, when you are shopping for your dress, make sure you tell your boutique that you are getting married abroad. They will be able to advise you on the best fabrics and silhouettes for hotter climates, as well as dresses that won’t crease too much in transit. They will also be able to box up your gown, or help you pack it in a proper carrier – they will also discuss how you can get creases out and finesse it once unpacked. Most airlines will help you take it on board as hand luggage, and if the plane you are on has a first class or business carriage, they may be able to hang it up for you in a cloakroom space. Call your airline and discuss your requirements and see what they can do to help you out. Basically, do everything you can to avoid it going in the hold!
Caribbean DR E A MI NG
White sands, turquoise waters and year-round sunshine… what’s not to love about the Caribbean? Here are our favourite spots for a honeymoon in 2023
The Bahamas
Lying close to Florida, north of the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas is a sunseeker’s paradise that comprises over 700 islands fringed by coral and glittering azure waters. The Bahamas is a postcard-worthy tropical destination and a honeymoon here is all about relaxation – think glorious boat trips, sunbathing and lazy days spent snorkelling. Each of the main islands is a little different so you’ll fall in love no matter your travel style. We particularly love the idyllic Exumas islands with their white sugar sands – not to mention the adorable swimming pigs! For blissful accommodation, consider Kahari Resort where you can sleep in one of 12 tranquil waterfront bungalows.
Cuba
If you’re looking for an authentic and stripped-back experience for your honeymoon, consider the beautiful island of Cuba. A classic destination in its own right, Cuba offers something extra special – it’s a vibrant and heady choice that oozes old-world charm. Of course, white sandy beaches play a part here, but cultural Havana is often the lure. The colonial capital is renowned for its colourful streets, vintage cars and buzzing nightlife making it a magical setting for a unique break. While other Caribbean islands offer luxury aplenty, ultra-lavish five-star resorts aren’t as abundant here – but don’t let that stop you from booking. Boutique hotels are lovely for a honeymoon with highlyrated properties including A|S Boutique Residency and Residencia Santa Clara.
The beautiful Bahamas defines the word paradise with its tropical palms and sugar sand beaches
Cuba’s colourful Havana is a must-visit if you want to experience the local culture on your honeymoon
Antigua
The twin islands of Antigua and Barbuda are famed for their pristine beaches, sultry sunsets and secluded hotels – an amazing choice for a refined tropical escape. Antigua is the larger of the two and is filled to the brim with scenic spots. Better still, as one of the Caribbean’s smaller islands, you’ll never be far from where you want to go. In terms of beaches, the island boasts 365 – and although you won’t visit them all, you’ll definitely fall in love with those you do! Make sure you see Antigua’s colourful capital St John’s and celebrate at a sunset party at Shirley Heights, too – it’s a magical setting overlooking the English Harbour. For somewhere to stay, check out Blue Waters Resort & Spa or adults-only COCOS for a romantic, rustic-chic option.
Tobago
If you want something different to the glitz of large resorts, Tobago is the island for you. While luxury isn’t shunned here, this is a destination with a rustic approach – favouring idyllic tropical retreats that make the most of nature. Very much an eco-friendly destination, Tobago has been leading the way in conservation. In fact, its Main Ridge rainforest has been protected for more than 200 years. If you’re a nature-loving couple, you’ll undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy from wildlife tours to kayaking and hiking. You’ll also want to check out Bon Accord Lagoon where you can see bioluminescent waters twinkling in the moonlight. As a laid-back option, you’ll find lots of peaceful accommodation. The Villas at Stonehaven promise a secluded hideaway, while Castara Retreats is a gorgeous treetop hotel with an added sprinkling of wellness.
Jamaica
Home of reggae and rum, there’s no place quite like Jamaica! A culturally diverse country with breathtaking scenery, your days here can be filled with so much more than lounging on the beach. For active couples, rafting, horse riding and hiking are a must – you’ll be treated to tumbling waterfalls and lush mountainous jungles. Or, if you want a view from the water, hop on a catamaran cruise and soak up the sun. There’ll be plenty of time for dancing under the stars, too – this island is about good beats and good vibes, after all! If you’re wanting to indulge, this is also the right place. You’ll find incredible luxury hotels in Jamaica that were made with honeymooners in mind – be sure to check out Sandals and Couples Resorts for the ultimate romantic escape.
Grenada
For an under-the-radar destination, you’ll want to note Grenada. The epitome of paradise, this diverse country is pristine, laid-back and free from bustling crowds – perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love this destination, too. Making the most of locally-grown spices, the cuisine you’ll find is fragrant, flavourful and delicious. There are plenty of sweet treats to enjoy here as well – from nutmeg ice cream to quality local chocolate. For things to see and do, Grenada won’t disappoint. Spend your days strolling the picturesque capital, celebrating on a sunset cruise and diving at the underwater sculpture park. To make your trip extra special, upscale hotels like Silversands Grenada, Spice Island Beach Resort and Calabash Grenada will deliver pure honeymoon bliss.

This island goes hand-in-hand with honeymoons – it’s one of the Caribbean’s most romantic destinations and has lots to offer newlyweds. Combining palm-fringed beaches with acres of untouched rainforests, nature lovers will be in paradise. The Pitons are an iconic natural site here – if you’re up to it, a hiking trip will give unrivalled island views. Or, if you want a chilled-out activity, make the most of the volcanic landscape with a visit to the mineral-rich mud baths. As a honeymoon hotspot, you’ll find many luxe resorts in St Lucia, too. One of our favourites is Jade Mountain, which boasts gorgeous open-air rooms overlooking the sea.

This is an island that’s loved by many – including famous faces who regularly stay at the swanky Platinum Coast resorts. One of the most easily accessible countries from the UK, there is endless beauty to discover in this magnificent European destination
We know that Paris is the City of Love, but there is so much more beauty to discover across the Channel than the capital city. There are romantic towns and cities in abundance, the countryside is the epitome of picturesque, and the seaside resorts are famous the world over...
The coast
St Tropez is the jewel in the crown of the French Riviera; it has attracted the rich and famous since the late 19th century. And, today, it’s loved for its luxe beach clubs, diverse restaurants and number of pretty coastal stretches. Surrounding the town is the rocks and woodland of the St Tropez peninsula – it’s a sight to behold in itself, but even more spectacular are the views across the sea to the Maures Mountains. There is layer upon layer to enjoy in this stunning setting, with everything from traditional markets and highend shops, to the glitzy port and ochre streets of the old village. Pampelonne Beach is the most well-known spot to relax. This is the perfect place to celebrity spot, and it is lined with discrete beach clubs and elegant restaurants that overlook the sea. For something more secluded, journey over to Bonne Terrasse; a sheltered little bay, which provided safe harbour for the local fishing boats in times gone by. It is situated in the Cap Camarat, a rugged stretch of coastline that runs around one of the three headlands. Here, you’ll see the iconic lighthouse, and it is also home to some amazing wildlife – native French tortoises and peregrine falcons.
The country
The Loire Valley is named after the 1,000km river that runs through it, beginning in the central Ardèche and flowing through to the Atlantic. It is thanks to this river that the surrounding regions are lush and green, each destination with its own unique culture. The Loire Valley is famed for its array of magnificent chateaux, especially between Orléans and Angers – the beauty of the architecture and gardens surrounding them are breathtaking. There are more than 100 that are open to the public – Azay-le-Rideau is a fairytale castle, complete with turrets and moat, and the largest chateau is the white-limestone Chambord – a spectacle of Renaissance architecture. The Loire Valley is often referred to as the garden of France; there is lush country enveloping the region and it’s famous for its outstanding produce – this is where the best Parisian restaurants source their fresh ingredients from. There are no shortages of vibrant markets in most towns, where you’ll find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, local meats and cheeses, flowers, handmade soaps and other artisan treats. Vinecovered slopes surround the valley, and there are countless opportunities for wine tasting.

Famous for its red wine, there is so much more to discover in Bordeaux. So beautiful is this city that a large part of it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The architecture, streetscapes and riverside are magnificent. Must-sees include the Grand Théatre, Cours du Chapeau-Rouge, Place de la Bourse and Porte Cailhau. Shopaholics will swoon over Rue Sainte-Catherine, which is the longest shopping street in France. Over more recent years, the whole riverfront area has been redeveloped, turning the banks of the Gironde into a wide pedestrian boulevard, punctuated with parks and gardens. This is the perfect place to walk, cycle or just relax, while soaking up the atmosphere and views of the city. The location is also famous for its cuisine; try fresh oysters at the stalls on the river, or head to Marché des Capucins where you’ll be indulged with a luxurious variety of seafood, breads, cheeses, patisserie and chocolatiers – treat yourself to a crêpe or moules-frites. And don’t forget, apart from the stunning city, there are also the surrounding vineyards to visit and, of course, the amazing wine tasting that goes alongside.
Island RETREAT
It’s not hard to see why The Maldives is known as one of the world’s finest honeymoon locations. If you want something picturesque, serene and surrounded by nature, here’s our latest discovery…
It’s really no surprise that The Maldives remains one of the most celebrated and popular honeymoon destinations across the globe. There is so much to discover in this unique setting, and you’ll instantly feel embraced by paradise thanks to its divine Indian Ocean location. After the stress and emotions of organising a wedding, a holiday in this special destination will feel far from the madding crowd –this is an idyllic place to rest, relax and spend time with the love of your life. You’ll be spoiled by the scenic views, the unmatchable tranquil waters and the outstanding hospitality.
Closer look
The Maldives is a set of 26 ring-shaped atolls and hundreds of islands, approximately 1,270 miles off the southern tip of India. One of the most unique aspects of the Maldives is the concept of one island, one hotel – so each resort is located in its very own private retreat. This makes uncovering an exclusive and peaceful environment feel oh so easy. If your dream honeymoon is all about finding tropical surroundings and a luxurious beach setting alongside privacy, impeccable service and a luxe place to rest your head, The Maldives ticks every box.
The Raa Atoll
One of the most lauded destinations is the tranquil shores of the Raa Atoll, where you’ll find InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau. This is a gorgeous location for you to switch off, escape everyday life and immerse yourself in nature – all with the backdrop of one of the most beautifullycrafted resorts in the nation. You’ll arrive by seaplane; you can spot the island’s famous lighthouse when you get close by. And, as soon as you step off the plane, you’ll be welcomed by soft white sand, swaying palm trees and tranquil turquoise waters.
There is a range of accommodation options to choose from depending on your requirements and budget – you’ll find everything from beach and overwater pool villas to beachfront residences. In terms of decor, the resort is a design-lover’s paradise. Warm, welcoming and utterly chic, everything has been created drawing inspiration from ‘Mussafir’ – an Arabic word that embodies wanderlust and colourful nomadic lifestyles. Natural materials are punctuated with pops of colour from the finest furnishings, while traditional Maldivian design has been given a contemporary twist to highlight the architectural features throughout the resort. One of the most tranquil aspects is the AVI Spa – it’s nothing short of a haven. You can enjoy couple’s or singular treatments, crafted with indigenous Asian health practices and incorporating organic botanicals.
Special features
Food and refreshments at the resort are a dream and there are diverse options to enjoy throughout the day. Start with breakfast at Café Umi, with a table on the beach overlooking the water. Head over to the
adults-only The Retreat for lunch or a curated afternoon tea. Don’t miss the sunset with Champagne cocktails in The Sunset Bar, and then take your evening meal at the majestic Lighthouse. Here you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the resort and ocean, before enjoying a gastronomic feast crafted from the finest seasonal ingredients and fresh seafood. For an extra romantic touch, you can request a bespoke dining experience in an intimate island setting – a secluded beach, a remote sandbank or even the privacy of your villa.
It’s pretty clear that your trip to the Maldives will leave you relaxed, revitalised and re-energised. But, if the adventurer in you kicks in, there is plenty to enjoy, too. Maamunagau Island is blessed with a large lagoon that surrounds the entire island and is home to several snorkelling spots, thriving with fish, black tip reef sharks, dolphins and turtles. You can swim amongst manta rays in the Maamunagau house reef, or be inspired by the diverse colours of the corals in the clear blue waters. There’s also a brilliant schedule of activities, so you can try something new everyday if you wish – from yoga and gym classes to turtle safaris, manta ray excursions, dolphin cruises and sunset or sunrise fishing. Looking for something to get the adrenaline going? There are so many watersports to try out, from kayaking to parasailing, jet skiing and everything in-between.

Spencer and Becky's honeymoon was all about relaxing beaches, tequila and tostadas
We put our honeymoon on hold for over two years – we got married in late 2019, just before the pandemic. We had originally planned to go away the following summer. Mexico was top of our wish list from the very beginning and, in December 2021, after a lot of planning and waiting, we finally set off to spend New Year there. We always knew we wanted to stay in a couple of different resorts, but also didn’t want the hassle of having to travel too far. We flew directly to Cancun and, from there, transferred via ferry to Isla Holbox – it took about four hours to transfer. It probably wasn’t the most relaxing first day, but it was worth it when we arrived. We stayed at Punta Caliza, which is a beautiful boutique hotel, and is just by the beach. The atmosphere at the hotel is so relaxing and it looks so rustic and pretty – authentic straw roofs and white walls. Inside the rooms are all wooden; a world apart from anything we had stayed in before. It was traditional and also luxurious. The pool outside stretches wall to wall of the courtyard, which is like nothing we had ever seen before. We didn’t want an all-inclusive hotel and we are so glad that this wasn’t an option. It meant we could enjoy breakfast and then go out and enjoy the beach and local restaurants (a local delicacy is lobster pizza, and we had about three!) Breakfast at the hotel was amazing, there were all the usual things to choose from, and also there was a different local speciality everyday. There aren’t cars on the island, so we enjoyed hiring bikes to ride up and down, stopping for refreshments or to sunbathe. We also did an amazing fishing tour – you get taken out for the morning and are shown how to fish. We then got to try the freshest and most delicious ceviche of our lives! New Year on Holbox was just an amazing experience – it felt like one big street party by the beach. The beach clubs had different music, live and as well as DJs. We will never forget it.
Our next destination was Amansala Chica Resort in Tulum; the transfer was about three hours. The eco resort is so peaceful and they specialise in yoga and health holidays, so we ended up getting really zen for a few days. The hotel has a really lovely small spa and is surrounded by gardens and then the beach. We loved sitting in the hotel bar area and watching the waves. The Tulum National Park is literally 10 minutes away, and this is where the famous Mayan ruins are – they are well worth visiting. There are loads of day trips and activities to do, too, and we booked a snorkelling and swimming day at the cenotes, which are like an open plunge pool and cave. You can do dives there, but you need to have accreditation. It’s a really magical experience. Otherwise, our favourite thing to do was relax and take in the weather and scenery – we would recommend hiring bikes to explore the area. The beaches are out of this world – when you think of a beach paradise, that's exactly what you get.
