TIPS & TRICKS THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP: “OUT OF THE BUCKET AND ONTO THE FLOOR” Leaving the epoxy too long in the bucket will cause it to heat up and start smoking. DO NOT POUR HOT EPOXY ON YOUR PROJECT. 1.5 - 3 mixed gallons at a time for easy mixing Use The Concrete Protector’s l arge low viscosity mixing wandfor mixing. This is the correct mixing wand to ensure that you are not whipping air into your epoxy. For more even coverage, add anti-skid additives into both seal coats. On larger projects, utilizing a Hippo or barrel mixer is a great way to speed up the mixing process. When installing line striping, apply all three coats (Base Coat, Sealer Coat, and Sealer Coat). Then, when dry, tape out and install the desired lines. This will reduce back taping, and will prevent any unneeded sanding if applied within the recoat window. CUTTING IN: Many times, contractors will just pour the epoxy in puddles or ribbons just a few inches from the edge of the walls so they will be able to quickly grab the epoxy with their 2” chip brush or 4” mini roller. By utilizing a notched squeegee, the product can be applied at a preferred mil rate per square foot. This technique is more time effective than dipping and rolling from a paint tray. PROTECTORTHANE: You must wait until the floor is “tack-free” (no longer sticky anywhere) to proceed on to your 1st coat of ProtectorThane. Do not wait to apply ProtectorThanepast 24 hours. If it is past 24 hours able to get a chemical bond to the previous coat (if you miss your recoat window, you will have to sand/abrade the entire surface, vac and solvent window, you will have to sand/abrade the entire surface, vac and solvent wipe before continuing with the next coat). ProtectorThane has a much longer “Pot Life”. Meaning that once it is made up, you can just leave it in the bucket and pour it out as you need it (no rush to quickly get it out of the bucket and on to the floor.) The pot life of mixed ProtectorThane is about 30-40 minutes. Application of Protectorthane in the 123 System can be done a couple of different ways. You can “cut-in” on walls and edges just like you did with the Base Coat Epoxy and use an 18”, 3/8” nap roller cover. • Use an 18” paint tray and dip and roll OR • Pour out puddles/ribbons and use your roller as a squeegee (slight down pressure on your roller to push the urethane back and forth to coat the floor and then roll (just like you did with the Base Coat Epoxy . . . North and South, followed by East and West.

TIPS & TRICKS 1 A lower pressure setting on your washer is best when prepping for this application. You want the surface to be clean but you do not want to create a striping pattern. The ideal time to apply the sealer is when the concrete is transitioning from a dark color (from water saturation) to a lighter color (drying). In reality, mixing this sealer is easy! Pour 2 concentrated bottles of TCP sealer into a 5 gallon bucket, fill bucket up the rest of the way with cool, clean water, mix thoroughly with drill & paddle or broom handle. A super easy way to get to your “9 parts water -1 part concentrate” mix! Also, when mixing & adding water to your bucket, don’t blast the sealer with the water from a hose/water nozzle. Things will get bubbly and frothy if you do. You’re not making a frothy cappuccinos here . . . so let’s stick to making up sealer. Your coverage rate will not be as good on windy & warmer days (on excessively windy days, go fly a kite). A battery operated sprayer strapped to a hand cart makes life easier. Your sealer will spray on “milky white” (looks like skim milk

) and will dry clear in a few minutes.

Use a stiff bristled broom to move the sealer evenly across the surface. Brooming the sealer is not 100% always necessary . . . only on inclines (see tip below). If your client is watching the process, at least make it look like you’re working to earn that Do not let sealer “run” down in strips on inclines/slopes/verticals/edges (use broom to brush out the “runs”). Heavy runs of sealer may cause slight discoloration. Don’t walk or allow others to walk in the sealer when it is wet on the surface (footprints may be left behind) . . . unless “footprints” are a decorative look you’re going for It’s best to wait 24 hrs. before allowing vehicle traffic (secure caution tape across end of driveway). While disconnecting the Hover Scrubber and pressure washing wand from the pressure washer, pull the trigger, relieving pressure for an easy disconnect. Try to pop that hose off without 1st relieving pressure and you’ll understand why.

1 Set up mix station

2 Combine 4 parts of EPDM rubber granules and 1 part of ElastaThane AR Polymer or ElastaThane UV 550 in wheelbarrow (products measured by weight) 3 Mix for 3 to 5 minutes with a shovel until all granules are coated with binder. 4 Place the granule mixture at the starting point in small stacks with the trowel. Start spreading and level the granules to a thickness of 3/8” or desired thickness with medium pressure to squeeze the granules together. 5 Once the granules are well distributed, moisten the trowel with liquid release agent. Smooth the surface, take care not to leave any loose granules. 6 Let Dry

ELASTASTONE TIPS & TRICKS 1 These products are mixed by weight, not volume 2 Use release agent to keep rubber from sticking to tools during application 3 Using a wheelbarrow for transporting mixed product will result in faster application 4 There are 2 kinds of Elastathane : AR (non- UV resistant) and UV (uv resistant), however, AR may be used for prime coat outside 5 This can also be installed using a screedbox and a thickness gauge. 6 The product may stain clothing and footwear, wear gloves and a mask. Protection and goggles are suggested. Wearing long-sleeved clothing is also recommended. 7 The outside temperature is very important for a successful installation. The temperature must be between 50 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit during installation and for the next 24 hours. 8 When priming, apply in small areas which can be coated with rubber before the primer dries. 9 Moisten your trowel constantly during the smoothing period, never place the granules further than the distance of one arm at a time. 10 Use a mixture of urethane grade solvents or liquid release agent to clean dirty tools 11 A return to service period of 48 to 72 hours is recommended, and you must wait until the surface is no longer sticky before stepping on it. 12 Elastastone can be installed on vertical surfaces using Cabosil powder 13 On certain applications, such as parks and playgrounds, a safety layer may be required.

EXAMPLES OF AN EASY WAY TO MIX:

ACCELERATOR:

A five-gallon pail of Permaflex has a deep lid (compared to the one-gallon pail of Permaflex) and it is hard to remove . . . UNLESS, you use the following method to remove it: •With a utility knife, cut every 2.5 - 3 inches around the lid and then use a plastic pail opener to remove. • After removing the lid, premix your Permaflex to color consistency • Pour half of the pail of Permaflex into another same-sized pail (visually verify equal amounts in each pail) • Open the catalyst associated with the Permaflex (an 8 oz bottle for a 5-gallon pail and a 1.6 oz bottle for a 1-gallon pail) and pour half of that bottle into your split Permaflex (visually verify half of the bottle). • Open the accelerator associated with the Permaflex (a 32 oz bottle for a 5-gallon pail and a 6.4 oz bottle for a 1-gallon pail) and pour half of that bottle into your split Permaflex if your objective is “Regular Acceleration”. (If your objective is “Double Acceleration”, pour the complete bottle of accelerator in). • Mix for 30 - 45 seconds • Add solvent (typically 10 - 20% by volume). • Mix for another 2 mins. or so until well blended The “slow-set” or “regular-set” time is 4-6 hours (and is what you get when you add the accelerator that automatically comes along with your Permaflex). This slow set amount is 5% accelerator by volume (6.4 oz of accelerator per gallon). Additional accelerator can be purchased to speed up set time to a 1-2 hour set time (“fast-set”). Humidity in the air is the biggest factor on speed of set . . . the more humidity, the faster the PermaFlex sets! 10% accelerator by volume is considered “fast-set” (12.8 oz of accelerator per gallon).

PRIME COAT:

Extra solvent may be required when slab temps are extremely cold. Permaflex hitting a cold, cold slab will thicken and make it harder to work with. Consider going with high solvent percentages (not exceeding 25% solvent by volume. PermaFlex will not completely solidify in your pail during your application. After Catalyzed and Accelerated it can only form a skin on the surface (needing removed) and/or thicken up a bit if application is long delayed. Just thin it down again and you’re ready for application! You can either “dip and roll” your prime coat (out of an 18” paint tray) or pour it out, squeegee (using an 1/8” notched squeegee) and then back roll evenly with an 18” 3/8” roller cover. You are going for 240 sq ft per gallon. Permaflex is not like paint where it goes on one color and dries another color (Permaflex goes on one color and stays that color). A great idea is to tint your prime coat a slightly different color. For example, adding 3 to 4 oz of another color of Permaflex per gallon is a good way to shift the color (many contractors will add 8 oz of Black Permaflex to each 2.5 gallons of Permaflex to tint).

BROADCAST COAT:

If outgassing occurs (bubbles) it is advised to reroll (even if extremely tacky) to allow the bubbles to lay out. You can apply Permaflex the same way on this coat but it may be advised to “dip and roll” this coat before broadcasting to ensure a thin, even coat. What you DON’T want to have happen is to make up your Permaflex a bit on the thick side, pour it out and then fail to roll it out evenly (which can happen to inexperienced installers). If this happens, then there is a chance of your Permaflex penetrating up around your flakes in the thick spots on the floor and making the floor look blotchy. With our color flakes there are endless color combinations and endless possibilities!

TIPS & TRICKS THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP:

“OUT OF THE BUCKET AND ONTO THE FLOOR” Leaving the epoxy too long in the bucket will cause it to heat up and start smoking. DO NOT POUR HOT EPOXY ON YOUR PROJECT. You must premix Part A for 3 minutes BEFORE pouring out of the bucket and adding metallic pigment to it. 1.5 - 3 mixed gallons at a time is a typical amount to work with for each color batch (use appropriate workforce for the size of project that you are doing). It is a good idea to have each area of your whole project premeasured & marked off before starting with your prime coat. Even though this is not as critical in the prime coat, you’ll definitely want to be getting your average of 60 sq. ft. per gallon when you get to your marble coat. When Magic Troweling your marble coat: Pull the epoxy across the floor to blend one color over the other and evenly cover the previous coat (use the magic trowel to pull and apply epoxy along the edges of the walls and around other obstacles). After you have your batched area coated, walk back into the epoxy to where you started, and lightly float the magic trowel over the surface of the colored epoxy (like washing a window with a squeegee . . . lightly floating the magic trowel over the surface of the epoxy to help level it out). All colored ribbons, drips, and puddles should be manipulated with your magic trowel, rollers or a combination of these to “smear” one color over top of and with the other colors to blend and marbleize. Single Metallic colors look great as well as 2 color combos. Keep in mind that the more colors you do, the more complex the project becomes (with a greater chance for error). Use The Concrete Protector’s large low viscosity mixing wand for mixing. This is the correct mixing wand to ensure that you are not whipping air into your epoxy. Do not use a high-speed drill. Do not mix so fast that you get the “tornado effect” in the product as it spins around the bucket (at this speed, you may suck air down into the epoxy . . . potentially entrapping it and possibly causing bubbles). Make sure the room is at a steady temperature or the temperature is on the decrease when applying the epoxy. A room with floor temps rising while curing may cause the slab to breathe out and possibly cause outgassing bubbles). It is a good idea to have ALL of your Marble Coat batches premeasured ahead of time (for both colored Part A Resin & Part B Hardener). This is called “batching”. This way, all your mixer has to do is pour the Part B into the colored Part A and then mix. The less thinking involved in the mixing step, the less chance there is for mistakes. Use the appropriate labor force for the job that you’re doing. Most residential projects may require 3 workers. One person dedicated to mixing only. One person as your “runner”, taking buckets of mixed epoxy from the mixing area to the floor, and one person as the main applicator/finisher. Mark all “job” buckets to visually indicate the job buckets from mixing buckets. Apply painters tape around the buckets that you are designating as “job buckets” to clearly indicate which buckets are job buckets and which buckets are mixing buckets. You DO NOT want to take mixing buckets (with possible unmixed Part A or B dripping off the bottom of it from a messy mixing station) onto your floor. TIPS & TRICKS (CONT.) When mixed epoxy is poured into your job bucket, make sure that the job bucket is sitting on a clean surface. While removing the tape from the borders, you may notice a little bit of bleed. Any bleed can be removed by using a cloth dipped in xylene or acetone, scraping with a razor blade, or both. Utilizing cardboard placed on both sides of the border while spraying the border with marbelizing spray is an easy way to protect the rest of the floor from overspray.

Whenever you break a kit, you must premix Part A for 3 minutes BEFORE pouring out of the bucket and adding metallic pigment to it. For example: If you are not using a full 1-gallon pail of Part A in the batch that you are making, you must premix the full 1 gallon of Part A (in the original bucket) before pouring out of it & adding metallic to it. If this is not done, the metallic powder may absorb additives that have risen to the top and it may have negative effects on your epoxy. If you are mixing a whole kit at once (pouring and scraping the sides of 2 complete one-gallon Part A pails into your mixing bucket), you don’t have to premix the Part A. 1.5 - 3 mixed gallons at a time is a typical amount to work with for each color batch (use appropriate workforce for the size of project that you are doing). EXAMPLE if making 3-gallon batches: The popular color combo of 50% Deep Mocha and 50% Lincoln Penny = 3 gallons x 60 sq. ft. x 2 colors = you should be working in 360 sq. ft. areas. Measure out 360 sq. ft. areas and use painters tape on the wall (each side of the room) as a visual reference to indicate each area. In this example, you are putting down 3 gallons of Deep Mocha and 3 gallons of Lincoln Penny within a 360 sq. ft. area. 360/6 gallons = 60 sq. ft. per gallon. It is a good idea to have each area of your whole project premeasured & marked off before starting with your prime coat. REPAIRS IF NEEDED:

SCRATCHES: Using a non-scratch Scotch Brite pad, rub surface, then clean to see if that removes the scratch. You may then have to “spot wax” with our acrylic floor finish (High Noon or Satin Armor Floor Finish) . . . only if necessary. If there is a deeper scratch and the Scotch Brite pad/wax doesn’t do the trick, use 220 grit sandpaper or screen (or higher) to lightly sand the spot/area then 1 - 3 coats of acrylic floor finish.

This is a good method of prep in addition to shot blasting for cementitious and epoxy applications.

TIPS & TRICKS Statistics show 73% of all coatings fail due to bad or improper prep. Prep is the most important step in the installation process 1 ACID ETCHING: Acid etching removes laitance, but cannot remove curing compounds or many of the contaminants found in industrial settings, such as oily deposits and water-insoluble materials, any of which can interfere with the adhesion of a coating. Improper surface preparation can result in poor bond and lack of coating adhesion. Mask off any areas not wanting etched. Mask off any metal objects that may corrode when acid vapors are present (brass thresholds and brass door kickplates). Ammonia (6 parts water + 1 part ammonia) is a great alternative to neutralizing instead of using baking soda.

CONCRETE PREP

TIPS & TRICKS 2 SHOTBLASTING: The handle of the shotblaster can be adjusted to allow you to blast in hard to reach places. The shot gate can be adjusted wider for quicker/deeper profiling. All four wheels must be on the floor while the machine is running (you will throw shot around the room and it can potentially hurt someone). Always wear eye protection while running the machine (same goes for others in the area as well). Always move the shotblaster while it is running (stopping in one spot will allow the blaster to chew into your concrete). When done, collect shot on the ground with magnet, release magnet into cardboard or paper and pour shot into a small bucket to reuse again. 3 GRINDING: A 16/20 or 30/40 grind is typically where you will want to be to prep before coating. Do not use a finer diamond grit before coating (a deeper scratch pattern is required for proper adhesion). Note: grinding is not a proper preparation method to get the full benefits of Permaflex (shotblasting or the acid etching method is needed). The smaller the grinder head the more marks you are prone to leave on the surface. The idea of grinding before coating is to “break the surface tension” of the slab to allow the coating to properly penetrate. Hard concrete requires soft bonded diamonds for effective grinding. Soft concrete requires hard bonded diamonds for effective grinding. The “bond” refers to the metal matrix that is holding the diamonds. Further in-depth details on diamonds: It seems counterintuitive, but a hard concrete floor requires a low wear resistance, or “soft bond;” while a soft concrete floor requires a high wear resistance, or “hard bond.” The terms hard bond and soft bond aren’t technically correct, but for the purpose of simplicity let’s stick with them. A bond must be matched to the material it is intended to grind or the tool will not function well. For example, if a soft concrete floor is ground with a tool designed for medium concrete, the tool will only have a fraction of the intended life and will wear out prematurely. This is because the wear resistance of the bond is too low for the concrete, which results in the tool needlessly wearing away and releasing new diamonds before the surface diamonds have broken down. Diamond size is sorted by mesh or grit size and there’s an inverse relationship between the size of the diamond and the grit number. This means a large diamond has a small number (18/20, 30/40) and a small diamond has a large number (80/100, 170/200). Large diamonds are used for aggressive removal while small diamonds are used for honing and polishing. See chart below.

TIPS & TRICKS 1 Use The Concrete Protector’s large low viscosity mixing wand for mixing. This is the correct mixing wand to ensure that you are not whipping air into your epoxy. 2 On larger projects, utilizing a Hippo or barrel mixer is a great way to speed up the mixing process. 3 Flake size matters! The more imperfections the concrete has (pitting, cracks, etc…) the more you should lean towards selling your customer a larger-size of color flake. Larger the flake size= more hide of ugly imperfections in concrete. Smaller the flake size= more concrete imperfections will show through. 4 Use a good quality tarp to mix on to protect the surface under your mixing station. Be careful not to step on any spilled Part A or Part B that might be present on the tarp. 5 Many times, contractors will just pour the epoxy in puddles or ribbons just a few inches from the edge of the walls so they will be able to quickly grab the epoxy with their 2” chip brush or 4” mini roller. 6 After ‘cutting in’ along walls and other areas, now you will want to utilize a 1/8” notched squeegee to spread the Base Coat Epoxy across the floor. With a little down pressure, you can move the puddles/ribbons of epoxy back and forth across the floor to evenly coat it. 7 Start broadcasting your flakes after about 1/3 of the floor is coated and wet with mixed Epoxy Base Coat. Waiting until the complete floor is coated will enable the epoxy to start the drying process, preventing the flakes from sticking to their full capacity. Before actually broadcasting, we recommend doing what is called a “refresh”. A refresh is basically rolling back (another time) through the area which you already coated to re-wet the epoxy, which will result in better flake adhesion. 8 5 gallon buckets are a great way to transport flakes for broadcasting. Filling 5 gallon buckets ½-¾ of the way with flakes is an easy and convenient way to keep the job moving. 9 When broadcasting flakes, make sure you keep your broadcasted flakes away from the edge of where you stopped rolling epoxy (try and stay around 2 feet back from the epoxy edge). You don’t want to have flakes right up to the edge of the epoxy and then when you have to put down/roll more epoxy, you may be rolling over flakes and creating a visible ridge. 10 Wearing spiked shoes during application will allow you to walk around and into the epoxy and top coat without leaving footprints. It is best to not walk in your spikes through the already broadcasted areas (you don’t want to slide/scrape the floor with your spike shoes). 11 Depending on where your project is located and what your client’s desired surface texture is will depend on what you will use to seal your flakes. Discuss seal options with your Business Development Representative.

PROTECTOR IMAGES PERSONAL PROTECTION It’s always recommended to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task at hand and follow your employer’s safety policy. STARTING OUT: DECISIONS

(For in-depth instructions, see Prep Manual) 1 Where will the logo be placed? 2 What shape and size will the logo be? 3 What will the color/design of the logo be? 4 Will the logo be placed over a solid colored or broadcast media background? 5 Will the logo be installed before or after the rest of the floor coating is applied?

LOGO INSTALLATION 1 Lay the logo on the floor in the desired location. 2 Using tape, tape around the edges of the logo creating the exact outline of where the logo will be installed. 3 When logo installation is being done after the rest of the floor coating has been applied, sand the taped off area. 4 Clean the sanded area and let dry. 5 Using protective paper and tape, cover the area immediately surrounding the space where the logo is to be installed. 6 When applying over a solid colored background, apply solid color now and let dry. 7 Center and lay the logo in the designated area. 8 Using small pieces of tape, tack down the logo on the top and bottom approximately half the length of the logo, creating two halves which can be lifted. 9 Lift one half of the logo, apply a thin layer of desired sealer on the floor surface under that half of the logo. 10 Lay logo using a roller with sealer working from the inside out while smoothing out wrinkles & air bubbles leaving a thin coat of sealer under & on top of the logo. 11 Repeat with the second half, remove the small tape pieces which were used for tacking. 12 Allow sealer to dry. 13 Multiple coats of sealer can be applied until desired texture is reached. 14 Remove all protective specialty tape, paper, plastic, etc. 15 Make sure project area is clean, presentable, and free from debris.

TIPS & TRICKS Installing a floor logo can be done before or after the rest of the floor area is coated, it is based on job necessity. - It’s best practice to sand the previous coating where the logo will be applied. - Unless installing a large logo, little material will be needed. Mix small batches. - Be aware of the recoat windows of products being used. - The first coat of material used to lay the logo in should be applied thin. - If installing the logo prior to application of floor coating, protect the logo from application issues like: bleed, spiking, etc… - When taping designated area and shape of logo, leaving an 1/8” variance is handy. - If necessary, using an iron, iron out the bends in the logo. - If a more vibrant logo color is desired, it’s best to install the logo over a solid-colored background. - Using a plastic putty knife may help in getting rid of air bubbles. - If using fast drying material, watch the edges of the logo for pop-ups and press them down as the material cures out. - YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLjkhC36v1w

TIPS & TRICKS 1 QUICK PATCH: Only mix up small amounts of Quick Patch at a time (typically measure out 4 oz of Part A and mix with 4 oz of Part B) but quickly and thoroughly. Mix no more material than can be used within one minute (Quick Patch will cure quickly). 2 PROTECTORFLEX JOINT FILL: Unlike Quick Patch, this product is very slow. It is recommended to use Protectorflex Joint Fill after prep is done and you are not coating until the next day (the colder the slab, the slower the set). If removing overfilled Protectorflex Joint Fill with a grinder (the next day), it is advised to “seed” the wet joint fill with sand to make it easier to grind. 3 MATCH PATCH PRO 80 JOINT FILL: Carry extra rags to catch and clean up any drips. Make sure caulk gun is always facing tip down throughout process. 4 FLEXKRETE: You have to mix in the Flexkrete catalyst BEFORE adding sand/aggregate, failing to do this will result in the product not setting. The sand/aggregate MUST BE DRY AND FREE OF MOISTURE (use kiln-dried sand and NOT PLAY SAND), failing to follow this will result in the product not setting. Moisture in the repair area will have the same results as adding wet sand, so it may be advised to torch the repair area to drive away any moisture. Flexkrete may be sticky to trowel but misting your trowel with acetone will make troweling much easier. 5 LRB/TAV: Never mix in more TAV than 1 part TAV to 2 parts LRB (you can add less TAV for a thinner mix if desired). Be aware the LRB/TAV mixture will shrink slightly in a few days during curing and any joints, cracks, pits may show a slight concave look.

TIPS & TRICKS 1

RESIN:

Make sure you use cool water to mix your resin. Don’t use water that has been baking in the sun all day from a garden hose. Hot mixed resin = faster texture = less fun. Mixed Resin = 1:1 mix of concentrated HD Resin + Water. When making “Mixed Resin”, do not spray the top of the resin from the nozzle of a garden hose (this will cause the resin to foam and it will take longer to fill properly).

TOOLS & MASKING:

Keep your magic trowels clean. Designate certain trowels for texture and other trowels for epoxy. Magic trowels with dried epoxy or texture on it will not allow you to put your texture down as smooth as possible. When masking walls, use painter’s tape along the base molding (approximately 1/16” up from the floor). Run ½” stencil tape on top of the base of the painter’s tape (this fiber reinforced tape makes it easier to pull tape when finishing up).

GROUT COAT:

When applying grout at the recommended square footage, when it is dry, it should feel like sandpaper. Also, DO NOT apply too thick (trying to create “build”) with this coat. This texture, at this viscosity, is NOT meant to fill or be applied thick. Wait until the grout coat is completely dry before attempting to design your wood planks with stencil tape. On interior projects, this means waiting until the next day.

DESIGN:

To keep things random, use three different sized jigs (pre-cut paint sticks or wood trim pieces) to quickly measure each plank. 7”, 9” & 11” jigs are three example combinations for varied plank sizes. Use random sizes to keep things stress free (and looking natural). Write sizes on your wooden jigs. If doing 7, 9, and 11-inch width planks . . . write 7, 9 and 11 on your measuring sticks with a black magic marker. You’ll want to have two of each size (one set for each worker designing the planks). End of planks/cross pieces: Randomly place tape ¾ of the way across the plank/tape to create the end of planks. When taping and walking back toward your helper, you’ll want to walk on the tape line to tack it down. Use a 4” or 6” mini roller frame + cover on a broom handle (roller cover has tape wrapped around it to stiffen it) and roll up and down the tape line to tack the tape down tightly to the grout coat. Don’t roll before walking down the tape first (the line can get wavy if you don’t walk on it first).

TEXTURE COAT:

Magic trowel technique: Pour puddle of texture down and magic trowel from one side of the room to the other side focusing on coating 3-4 planks at a time (depending on your plank widths). You want to be able to still faintly see the tape through the texture. When using an angled broom, it is essential to first cut the soft-bristled ends (the “fuzzy” part of the broom) off with scissors. You need the stiffness of the upper bristles to make the grain impression. There is no need to put down pressure on the angle broom. The weight of the broom is all you need. Make sure not to drag excess texture to the ends of your boards Don’t try to get fancy and “artistic” here with the angle broom. Just walk straight. When brooming texture across the floor, continue until you are several feet away from a wall and pick up on the broom. Put the broom against the other wall and broom back into AND past where you just textured and pick up on the broom.

CREATING KNOTS:

LESS IS MORE when it comes to making knots! With a 2” brush, twirl, then extend the markings above and below the knot (study the way real wood knots look and you’ll know what we’re getting at) or you can stab the wet texture with brush and do a quick twist in one direction . . . There really is no wrong way to do this . . . ugly knots look good when stained! Smaller knots look better than bigger knots.

SCRAPING & PULLING TAPE:

SCRAPE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE WOOD GRAIN! When removing tape, put pressure and pull on the tape towards you as you lift up the lines of tape. IF you pull/bend the tape over against the texture, you will leave many strands of tape fiber embedded (and you’ll have to spend a bunch of time trying to scrape it out). If creating nail holes at the end of your planks, now is the time to do so. When sweeping and vacuuming up the debris from scraping and pulling tape, DO NOT ROLL YOUR VACUUM across the floor. You may (and probably will) leave marks across several planks if you do. PICK UP the vacuum, set it down and repeat this process as you need to.

STAINING:

Staining the whole floor by hand looks the most realistic. Here is one stain formula to follow: On your main color of the floor, hand stain approximately 70% of the floor with 4 parts water to 1 part Classic Rustic Concrete Wood Stain. Walking around in your socks and moving around to random boards (while having your stain in a 16oz squat cup) is the way to go. On 15 % of the floor, dilute the stain concentrate 6 parts water to 1 part concentrate stain (for lighter colored boards). On the remaining 15% of the floor, mix up a new batch of stain at 3 parts water to 1 part concentrate stain (and apply a bit heavier) for darker colored boards. Bark Brown can be used as well for darker boards (or use a mix of 50/50 Classic Rustic Concrete Wood Stain + Bark Brown). Use a quality paint brush to stain. A 3” paint brush is a good size to utilize. With the corner of your brush, soak up some stain and then let it drip into your knot texture. This puddled stain will randomly flow around the knot texture and dry darker than the rest of the board.

SEALING:

EXTERIOR Work in smaller areas. Roll out sealer and then crosshatch without redipping. “Thin to win”. Seal when surface temps are steady or going down (evening is typically a good time to seal). When slab temps are increasing, concrete is breathing out and bubbles can happen. When slab temps are decreasing, concrete in breathing in / sucking the sealer into it. If you see “spiderwebbing” in the acrylic sealer while rolling, in means that area is already drying or your roller is dry. Wait until the first coat is not sticky to do the second coat (you don’t want to step in sticky sealer and cause discoloration or damage to your uncured coating.) INTERIOR The MOST IMPORTANT TIP: “OUT OF THE BUCKET AND ONTO THE FLOOR.” Leaving the epoxy too long in the bucket will cause it to heat up and start smoking. DO NOT POUR HOT EPOXY ON YOUR PROJECT. Use The Concrete Protector’s large low viscosity mixing wand for mixing Neat Coat Epoxy. This is the correct mixing wand to ensure that you are not whipping air into your epoxy. Whenever you break a kit, you must premix Part A for 3 minutes BEFORE pouring out of the bucket. 1.5 - 3 mixed gallons at a time is a typical amount to work with. Do not use a high-speed drill. Do not mix so fast that you get the “tornado effect” in the product as it spins around the bucket. At this speed, you may suck air down into the epoxy . . . potentially entrapping it and possibly causing bubbles.

TIPS & TRICKS (CONT.) Make sure the room is at a steady temperature or the temperature is on the decrease when applying the epoxy. A room with floor temps rising while curing may cause the slab to breathe out and possibly cause outgassing bubbles). Do whatever it takes to control room temps. If it means putting aluminum foil on the windows to block and reflect the sun, then do it. Use the appropriate labor force for the job that you’re doing. Most residential projects may require 3 workers. One person dedicated to mixing only. One person as your “runner”, taking buckets of mixed epoxy from the mixing area to the floor, and one person as the main applicator/finisher. Make sure you have a “mixing bucket” and a” job bucket”. When mixed epoxy is poured into your job bucket, make sure that the job bucket is sitting on a clean surface. IF wearing spiked shoes when applying your epoxy, make sure you are wearing dull or rounded spikes. Sharp spikes + a heavy installer = floor damage. Consider investing in rubber sport cleats if you need to walk in your epoxy while installing. 10

REPAIRS IF NEEDED:

Scratches: Using a non-scratch Scotch Brite pad, rub surface, then clean to see if that removes the scratch. You may then have to “spot wax” with our acrylic floor finish (High Noon or Satin Armor Floor Finish) . . . only if necessary. If there is a deeper scratch and the Scotch Brite pad/wax doesn’t do the trick, use 220 grit sandpaper or screen (or higher) to lightly sand the spot/area then 1 - 3 coats of acrylic floor finish. If damage occurs through your top seal coats and into your texture coat, a furniture wood stain pen is a good tool for stain touch-ups.

DESIGN

Tile, Diagonal Tile or Ashlar Slate designs are the most common designs done. With that being said, a completely seamless Tuscan Slate (no taped design . . . just texture and color) is a great system to sell in some situations. For example, a sidewalk with control cuts every several feet may look less “busy” with no design at all. You may want to sell it and explain it as looking like “large pieces of slate” in each area (between each control cut/expansion joint). Speaking of control cuts and expansion joints, on exterior projects you are honoring any existing control cuts/expansion joints (you are not filling them in). Tile and Diagonal Tile designs are best sold as larger tile 24” - 36”. The bigger the tile, the less taping you have to do laying out the design! Ashlar Slate design is random squares and rectangles. Borders taped out around the edges of the slab can make for a nice decorative touch (if that is what your client is desiring). Borders can be textured with a different integral color mix or stained a different color after it is dry. A Diagonal Tile pattern, Ashlar Slate pattern or seamless Tuscan Slate on the interior of the border all look great!

TEXTURE COAT

Most contractors prefer a slightly “thicker mix” on the Texture Coat compared to the Grout Coat. 7.5 - 8 quarts of mixed resin per bag of texture for this coat is typical. If doing a design, make sure to do 100% coverage over design lines in order to highlight grout lines. However, it should be applied thin enough as to slightly see the tape lines through the texture. Once you’ve coated the floor in an area and the texture begins to look dull (it starts losing its “wet sheen” look as it starts to dry), get down on your knee pads and move the trowel randomly around the texture on the floor. When applying blobs of texture to the surface, drop them no more than 3 feet away so you can easily reach with your trowel to knock them down. When knocking down texture, don’t hold your trowel flat (slightly tilt the trowel up on edge as you move it across the surface). By doing this, you are “knocking down” and flattening the blobs of texture, closing up the surface and leaving behind limited “open spaces”. TIPS & TRICKS (CONT.) Don’t move your trowel in a “windshield wiper” type of motion (you will be able to see all of the texture moving in the same pattern/direction if you do). If multiple people are troweling on the project, switch back and forth with each other every few minutes (everyone has their own unique troweling technique and if you stay on one side of the slab while someone else is always on the other side, you will be able to see a distinct texture difference between the two areas). Practice makes perfect!

Practice on sample boards and/or your own concrete to make sure you get the technique down.

Sell projects off of something you’ve done (ie, sample boards where you know the technique and coloring recipe). When removing stencil tape, put pressure and pull on the tape towards you as you lift up the lines of tape. IF you pull/bend the tape over against the texture, you will leave many strands of tape fiber embedded (and you’ll have to spend a bunch of time trying to scrape it out). When sweeping and vacuuming up the debris from scraping and pulling tape, DO NOT ROLL YOUR VACUUM across the floor. You may (and probably will) leave marks. PICK UP the vacuum, set it down and repeat this process as you need to. 7

STAINING

Pump up sprayers (or better yet our SMK sprayers) work great to spray stain over your texture. There are multiple techniques to stain: 2-3 colors sprayed “wet-on-wet” or one stain followed by another after the first one has dried. The biggest thing to remember is to start light (you can always apply more). Practice on sample boards ahead of time to get the look you are going for. The reason we typically go with a dark grout coat is to allow us to pull stencil tape and stain by allowing the stain to flow to the low areas. Light-colored grout lines require different techniques for staining (not staining to slight puddling). Leaving the tape on and spraying stain to puddling will still have stain bleed under the tape and on the light-colored grout lines. Leaving the tape on and staining with HVLP or airless sprayers would be required (or individually staining tile or other designs with foam brushes). The stain needs to be completely dry before sealing.

SEALING Exterior Sealing: Work in smaller areas. Roll out sealer and then crosshatch without redipping. “Thin to win”. Seal when surface temps are steady or going down (evening is typically a good time to seal). When slab temps are increasing, concrete is breathing out and bubbles can happen. When slab temps are decreasing, concrete in breathing in / sucking the sealer into it. If you see “spiderwebbing” in the acrylic sealer while rolling, it means that area is already drying or your roller is dry. Wait until the first coat is dry before applying the second coat (you don’t want to step in sticky sealer and cause discoloration or damage to your uncured coating.) Interior Sealing: Neat Coat epoxy is ideal for “build” to smooth out the low areas. It can be applied anywhere from 55 sq. ft. per gallon and higher. Applying at 55 - 65 sq. ft. per gallon is obviously going to give you more build and a smoother surface than when applied at 100 - 120 or more sq. ft. per gallon. With that being said, many clients like the texture of Neat Coat applied at 90 - 100 sq. ft. per gallon, but if they are wanting a completely smooth floor (they want to see the texture but not feel it), you’ll have to apply and charge for 2 thicker “build” coats. The MOST IMPORTANT TIP WHEN USING EPOXY: “OUT OF THE BUCKET AND ONTO THE FLOOR.” Leaving the epoxy too long in the bucket will cause it to heat up and start smoking. DO NOT POUR HOT EPOXY ON YOUR PROJECT. Use The Concrete Protector’s large low viscosity mixing wand for mixing Neat Coat Epoxy. This is the correct mixing wand to ensure that you are not whipping air into your epoxy. Whenever you break a kit, you must premix Part A for 3 minutes BEFORE pouring out of the bucket.

TIPS & TRICKS (CONT.) 1.5 - 3 mixed gallons at a time is a typical amount to work with. Do not use a high-speed drill. Do not mix so fast that you get the “tornado effect” in the product as it spins around the bucket (at this speed, you may suck air down into the epoxy . . . potentially entrapping it and possibly causing bubbles). Make sure the room is at a steady temperature or the temperature is on the decrease when applying the epoxy. A room with floor temps rising while curing may cause the slab to breathe out and possibly cause outgassing bubbles. Do whatever it takes to control room temps. If it means putting aluminum foil on the windows to block and reflect the sun, then do it. Use the appropriate labor force for the job that you’re doing. Most residential projects may require 3 workers. One person dedicated to mixing only. One person as your “runner”, taking buckets of mixed epoxy from the mixing area to the floor, and one person as the main applicator/finisher. Make sure you have a “mixing bucket” and a” job bucket”. When mixed epoxy is poured into your job bucket, make sure that the job bucket is sitting on a clean surface. IF wearing spiked shoes when applying your epoxy, make sure you are wearing dull or rounded spikes. Sharp spikes + a heavy installer = floor damage. Consider investing in rubber sport cleats if you need to walk in your epoxy while installing.

REPAIRS IF NEEDED:

Scratches in epoxy: Using a non-scratch Scotch Brite pad, rub surface, then clean to see if that removes the scratch. You may then have to “spot wax” with our acrylic floor finish (High Noon or Satin Armor Floor Finish) . . . only if necessary. If there is a deeper scratch and the Scotch Brite pad/wax doesn’t do the trick, use 220 grit sandpaper or screen (or higher) to lightly sand the spot/area then 1 - 3 coats of acrylic floor finish.

Tile, Diagonal Tile, Ashlar Slate, and Grand Flagstone are the most common designs done with this texture. With that being said, a completely seamless Venetian Stone Texture (no taped design . . . just texture and color) is hard to pull off in most situations. Every trowel line is visible and much practice is needed to pull this look off . . . some have referred to this look as the look of “frosting on a cake” . The grout lines of any design pattern will break up most trowel lines and the project will look more pleasing to the eye.
