By Angela Rogalski Hard work, dedication and fortitude are three qualities that will take you far in life, just ask Kimberly AveryWright. Wright has been with NASA for the past 25 years and knows that she found her niche and her passion when she joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration fresh out of university. There's nowhere else she'd rather be. She is a woman who loved math and science from as far back as she can remember, so the fit was perfect, and continues to be so.

Wright is from Guys, Tennessee and graduated from McNairy Central High School in Selmer, Tenn. and she's the youngest of seven children. After high school she attended Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss. and graduated in 1990. After obtaining her undergrad degree in mathematics, she went on to attend Howard University in Washington D.C. on a full scholarship for electrical engineering.

The traffic was slower outbound from the city but still an ever-present menace to his children, Alex, 5, and Jadelyn, 11, as they waited with nearly 40 other youngsters on the few feet of shoulder between the housing project and the bustling, noisy highway. Bus 28 would be along soon to take the children to school, but 15 minutes is an eternity to a child, especially a little one, full of oatmeal and giggles and just itching to run and romp and smite the Pokemon monster who appears on his phone.

Shalonda Patterson Dreams Come True With Faith, Perseverance & Hard Work

By Angela Rogalski Realizing one's dreams through faith and hard work is a path to success that many young people believe strongly in, and Shalonda Patterson is certainly no exception to that opinion. From the very beginning of her academic and professional careers, she has excelled and driven herself toward that dedicated direction.

Patterson was born in Corinth and was a graduate of Corinth High School in Shalonda Patterson 2009. She was crowned Miss Corinth High School during her time there and was also in the Hall of Fame. After graduation, she attended Mississippi State, where in 2013 she graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Communications, complete with a double concentration in Public Relations and Journalism. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority while at MSU. Patterson didn't have to wait long after graduating from MSU to begin her professional career.

"Immediately after graduating from MSU, I became the Regional Admissions Counselor for Metro Atlanta/South Georgia," Patterson said, "where I lived in Atlanta and was responsible for recruiting students in Georgia to attend MSU." Wanting to expand her career growth, she transitioned into the field of talent acquisition, which is where she utilizes her skills and talent today.

"Currently, I am the Talent Acquisition Partner for a premier sales performance agency, T-ROC (The Revenue Optimization Companies) based in Miami," Patterson said. Editor’s Corner Seeing Yourself Through The Eyes Of Others

This month I would like to continue with a topic I wrote about in our previous edition, the way in which we understand ourselves and how we are viewed by others. If life has taught me one thing it's that there are no -- or at least very few -- simple answers. Truth is usually found somewhere in the middle, in the sprawling gray area that covers so much of our existence.

Fanatics and fundamentalists will not like this idea, but I believe that moderate, even-handed, thoughtful people are the ones who make the world go around.

In 1994 actress Jodie Foster played the title role in the movie "Nell," about a young woman who grew up in a mountainous wilderness, detached from civilization or viturally any form of human con-

tact. The movie dealt with issues like the self, community and identity and asked the question, "To what extent, if any, can a person truly be human if they're not around other humans?"

Foster's Nell conjures up images of the noble savage, a stock character in Western civilization, popularized by the philosopher Jean Jaques Rousseau, that is supposed to represent the innate goodness of uncivilized man. Of course, Hollywood fashioned a romantic although less than compelling outcome for the strikingly lovely, feral Nell, but the larger issues at work in the screenplay give us reason to pause and think.

In the Seventeenth Century, the French philosopher Rene Descartes coined the famous dictum, "I think, therefore I am." In other words, the only thing of which Descartes could be sure , he said, was himself as a thinking, acting agent.

Everything else, including the world around him, could be called into doubt.

As philosoophers had done since ancient Greece, Descartes was trying to somehow explain the existence of the self as it related to the outside world.

Descartes's solution was somewhat egotistical and self-centered but it held sway for centuries.

Closer to our contemporary era, philosophers and

theologians have come to understand that what we call the self is actually a complex combination of factors, including genetics and the all-important socialization that takes place from the moment we are born, even before. The self, we now know, emerges within community, as a conglomoration of our own thoughts as well as the feedback we receive about ourselves from others. For the theologian, sin is always communal sin and, for the philosopher, the self is always a communal self.

As long as we're discussing the great thinkers and teachers in Western civilization, let us not forget the Apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians 13:12, the convert from Tarsus tells us that "now we see as in a mirror, dimly." Perhaps what Paul was trying to say was similar to what ancient Greeks before him and European philosophers after him were trying to say, that we understand ourselves only vaguely, indirectly, second-handedly, through our own spiritual searching and through the reflection we receive from our fellow humans.

Life is radically subjective. What does that mean?

It means that we filter reality through our own consciousness, including our own history, life experiences, biases, prejudices, convictions and beliefs. If you don't believe this, just

Wright said today she has evolved into various other responsibilities with NASA. "I teach Information Technology specialists and I also work in the Chief Information Officer's office here at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. In this organization I'm responsible for all of the information technology related to NASA and that includes networks, the communication between Earth and the International Space Station, website development, application development; just anything that is ITT-related in the organization."

After 25 years with NASA, Wright added that her motivation to get out of bed and head to work is as strong today as it was in the beginning.

"Part of it is the fact

that I have always loved math and science, even as a small child," she added.

"Initially, I was going to major in pre-med. I wanted to be a pediatrician.

Actually, I was a senior in high school and was prepared to go to college for pre-med and then on to medical school, when I met a guy at career day who told me how many opportunities there were for females in engineering because women were so rare in the field. And because I was good at math, I decided to try it. I also liked science very much, so I found out that I loved engineering."

Wright said she still felt that same excitement about what she does at NASA as she did when she began.

"Even after 25 years, it's great. To know that I'm working for NASA, the premiere agency that puts men and women into space and took the first man to the moon and back, and continues to explore our universe, is awesome to me. The excitement of having a small part in all of that is amazing and is a huge adventure of science.

I've worked directly with astronauts; I've seen an

actual shuttle launch in person. It's just all of those things I had read about as a child or seen on television growing up; I'm now living it. It's very cool.

And Huntsville is a great place to raise a family and it's home."

Wright is married to her college sweetheart, Keith, and has two sons; one who just graduated from school and is heading to Auburn in the fall on a soccer and academic scholarship, and her youngest son, who is a sophomore in high school and also plays competitive travel soccer and basketball.

With every new program or project that NASA develops, Wright said her excitement with her career choice builds all over again.

"When you think you've seen it all, a new program will come up. For example, right now there's the new space launch system, SOS, which is taking the place of the shuttle, and that's being developed here at Marshall. This is another huge milestone for the space program and is supposed to be in use around 2020. It's always exciting."

"I enjoy motivational speaking and inspiring youth/young adults to simply live out their dreams and to seek that path God has created for them because what He has in store for us is so amazing and more than we can ever imagine," she added. with these people and hearing them tell me how happy and excited they are about their new jobs and thanking me for my help, it's really humbling and so gratifying.

My goal as a whole is to change a life every single day, whether it's with a conversation or a simple smile."

Patterson gets home to Corinth quite often and credits the support of her family for her success too.

"Both my parents live in Corinth and my brother is currently a student at Ole Miss," she said. "I come home to see my family at

Afterall, his children were what he worked for, anyway, he said. Stewart takes his job and his role as a provider for his family very seriously, he said, but he takes his role as protector of his family even more seriously.

The children who bustled around Stewart ranged in ages from six to 16. They jostled each other.

The girls loosened clasps in each other's hair, talked about their clothes and jabbed at their phones with dexterous fingers. The boys shoved and laughed and darted back and forth. One boy pretended to dribble and shoot a basketball. Cars whizzed by on Cass Street, so close the children could feel the breeze as the vehicles passed. A row of mailboxes stood bolted to the concrete, the goose-neck frames reaching out even further over Cass Street. A white, picket fence framed the scene, as Stewart put it, lending an heir of safety and tranquility that might be deceiving.

"The road is just so close and it would be so easy for an accident to happen," said Stewart, never taking his eyes off the children.

"Pedestrians often drive too fast through this area," said Stewart, adding that they sometimes even drive around the bus when it is stopped and has out its caution bar least once a month. They're great."

Patterson is single, but said someday she would love to have a family.

"But I'm not focused on that right now. I'm very goaldriven, so right now I'm just concentrating on my career.

When it comes to networking and being involved in the community, and whatever I need to do career-wise, I'm definitely doing that."

On the opposite side of the Hunt Project, Jasmica Blake also stood guard. Like Stewart, Blake, was dressed and ready for work, but her children, five-year-old twins, JaKyron and JaKylan, as well as 11year-old DicaByrion and her neighbors' children came first, she said.

Blake stood far enough away so that the older children did not feel crowded, yet close enough so that the little ones, like her twins, stayed out of harm's way.

Other parents frequently join her in the mornings, Blake said, sharing the responsibility of watching over the children as they wait for Bus 28.

Blake described it as communal labor of love. "All children and parents, along with teachers, take part in the experience of education," said Blake. The quality of the overall educational experience, including unique, uncreatable moments, like riding the bus, was what she hoped to protect, Blake said. "I remember when I was a child, how exciting it was getting on the bus, said Blake, smiling. "We were taught that riding the bus was a privilege, not an absolute right, and our parents taught us to value it and to respect the driver and authority figures at school."

Like many children, Blake's have occasionally been bullied during their commute, she said, something she hoped to prevent by spending time with them at the bus stop. Blake and Stewart both said that parents in their neighborhood have formed an unspoken alliance, a kind of unofficial pact, as Blake put it, that they would band together to ensure that their children stayed safe and got the most out of school. That especially included being safe at the bus stop.

Community Care An African proverb says that it takes a village to raise a child. First Lady Hillary Clinton borrowed the saying for the title of her 1996 memoir and it has since become part of the contemporary, Western

lexicon. Parents at the J.B. Combs Apartments take the proverb to heart. As Blake put it, "We all have some share in bringing our children up to be young ladies and young gentlemen."

Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar said that the efforts of parents like Blake, Stewart and their neighbors are invaluable to him and his deputies in making sure that children, whom he described as "our most valuable resource and the future of our communities," are safeguarded. "Since school has started back a top priority for us is the boarding and off loading the children from busses," said Tolar.

"As much as we try, we can't be all places at all times, and we thank and encourage parents, like these, for contributing to the safety of our children." Tolar also stressed the importance of using the proper child-restraint devices for parents who drive their children to school.

Deputy Chief Josh Fortenberry with the Corinth Police Department agreed with Tolar. "Children deserve our protection above anybody," said Fortenberry. "Anytime parents take ownership of their communities, including safeguarding children boarding and disembarking busses, we support and applaud those efforts and we want them to know that we're a resource in case they need any advice or assistance. We encourage and welcome calls."

As the bus pulled up, Stewart was as vigilant as ever. He watched as his children boarded, falling in line with the stream of the other youngsters, ambling up the steps and taking their seats as the folding door closed shut and the stop sign retracted against the side of the bus.

"I'll be here, watching, making sure they're ok," said Stewart, easing toward his vehicle and off to work.

Across the housing project, Blake was nostalgic. "The best morning stories come out of times like these," she said. "Just think of the experience. Once upon a time we didn't have this," said Blake. "Old timers had to walk miles to school.

What a privilege it is to ride the bus and what a formative experience in a child's life."

Memory Lane Let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? We seniors have seen a lot of changes in the world since we were born.

In 1941, gas was 19 cents a gallon, which equates to $2.95 in today’s money. Bread was 8 cents ($1.24 today) and milk was 34 cents ($5.29 today). The very next year the production of autos was halted.

A car cost around $800 ($12,000 today) but after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor, rationing went into effect and car owners were limited to five tires. Other things were quickly added to the rationing list: bicycles, stoves, gas, coffee, butter and sugar.

Most homes had “Victory” gardens in the yard.

In 1946, rationing finally ended, and the use of the car increased. The first drive-in bank teller opened. We had punchboards instead of lottery tickets, and Slinkys and Tinkertoys, as well as Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. If we had a phone, it was probably on a party line, and we had a number like SYcamore 4-0160 or 0551-J1.

The first computer (ENIAC) was built. It weighed 30 tons and took up 1,800 square feet. The first Roosevelt dime was issued (worth $1.20 today), and only 6,000 families owned television sets.

By 1952, nearly 17 million families owned televisions and we were introduced to TV dinners. We watched the debuts of “Dragnet” and “The Today Show,” and “The African Queen” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the movies.

The Roosevelt dime’s buying power went down to 83 cents.

Loud Snoring Can Signal Sleep Apnea DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have sleep apnea. Before being treated by a sleep specialist, I was very sleepy during the day and had no energy. My specialist prescribed a mask that pumps air into my nose.

It helps somewhat. Later a friend told me about Provigil. It makes me feel much better, but I am not 100 percent. What else could help me?

— J.K. ANSWER: “Apnea” is Greek for “no breathing.” Sleep apnea is periods during sleep when a person stops breathing for 10 or more seconds.

There can be five to 30 or more such spells every hour. Quite often, an apneic period is preceded by snoring that gets progressively louder and louder. At the end of the no-breathing episode, the person grunts and half-wakens and then starts breathing again. This fragments sleep and leaves the person sleepy and without energy the next day.

The problem lies in a narrowed passageway for air as it travels through the throat en route to the lungs.

Redundant throat tissue blocks the natural airflow.

Weight loss is one way to get rid of excess throat tissue, if one is overweight. Don’t drink any alcohol from the evening meal on, because it relaxes throat tissue.

The mask you wear is called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). It delivers air under pressure so it can pass through the obstruction in the throat. Don’t abandon it.

You can ask your dentist about fash-

ioning a device that keeps the jaw forward during sleep. That opens the throat too. Stick with your Provigil, since it’s working for you.

There are a number of surgical procedures that can pare excess tissue from the back of the throat. And there is a new remedy called the Pillar Palatal Implant System. It consists of three small, plastic rods inserted into the back part of the upper palate to keep it propped up. For some, a droopy palate obstructs airflow.

Since you’re doing pretty well with the way things are going now, you might not want to upset things with any more treatment. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 68-year-old male in excellent health who exercises regularly, but I have trouble sleeping for more than five or six hours a night. To get the desired seven to eight hours of sleep, I’ve been taking a sleep aid (diphenhydramine), and have not noticed any unpleasant side effects.

Are there any long-term problems with taking this sleep aid on a frequent basis? — S.P. ANSWER: Diphenhydramine is one of the first antihistamines to be marketed. One brand name is Benadryl. Sleepiness is a side effect of most of the early antihistamines. In other words, you take the medicine for its side effect of drowsiness.

Millions of people have taken this drug since it was first marketed. You can take it on a regular basis.

September in the Garden

September will bring new life to the garden with the appearance of late summer and early fall blooms and colored leaves. The cooler weather will revive heat stressed gardens and be a relief for gardeners as they continue the late summer clean-up of flower beds and add autumn blooming plants to the landscape. *Continue pulling weeds and clean up perennials that have finished blooming.

Trim back salvias to force a new bloom cycle. Pull out spent annuals and cut back any overgrown annuals to encourage fall blooms. A dose of fertilizer will boost blooming. Annuals have an important place in the fall garden, as many will continue to bloom until the first frost. *Many fall blooming perennials are available in garden centers now. Some good choices for our area are asters, "Autumn Joy" sedum, Japanese anemones, Russian sage, and chrysanthemums.

Fall is also a good time to plant hardy ferns and ground covers. * If patio pots need refreshing, consider repotting them with ivy, ornamental cabbage, parsley, snapdragons, mums, lettuce, or small

boxwood plants. * Plant salad vegetables in a prepared bed or large container. Sow seeds of lettuce, spinach, radishes, and beets. No salad tastes quite so good as one made with greens gathered from your own garden. *Fall is the time to dig and divide irises, daisies, and daylilies. *Many plants will re-seed in the garden if seed pods are left to ripen. If you prefer to collect seeds to sow at a later date or to scatter in another area of the garden, collect seeds when they ripen. Label each variety and store the seeds in paper envelopes in a cool, dry place until you need them.

Be sure that the seeds are thoroughly dry when you store them to avoid mildew. *Many tender plants will root easily, so take cuttings of coleus, geraniums, dragon wing begonias, and basil before cool weather comes.

Snip 4 to 5 inch cuttings just above a set of leaves.

Remove any foliage that will be below the water line and place cuttings in jars of water in bright light. Feed the cuttings with liquid fertilizer. Roots should appear in several weeks. Pot the cuttings and enjoy the plants on a sunny window ledge through the winter. *When selecting chrysanthemum plants, choose those with tight buds, as this will ensure an extended blooming period. Plant mums in beds or pots where they will receive full sun and water them well. They need to be kept moist but well drained. *Begin preparing houseplants that have summered outdoors to be moved in for cold weather. Prune back and repot as needed. Be sure to inspect plants for any

insects, lizards, or other pests before bringing pots inside.

Sweet Autumn Clematis Sweet autumn clematis (Clematis terniflora) is one of the joys of the late summer garden. It is a deciduous vine which is covered in August and September with billowy clouds of small, creamy white, star shaped blooms that are deliciously fragrant. It is the easiest of all clematis to grow, requiring only a sunny spot and good drainage. Even though its growth habit is considered rampant, it does not harm plants on which it climbs. It can be kept in bounds with a severe spring pruning and unwanted seedlings can easily be pulled up. Autumn clematis may be grown on a fence or trellis or it may be left to climb into trees and shrubs where it will reach for the sun and provide a spectacular late summer show.

Watch for the fall wildflowers in our area. Asters, goldenrod, ironweed, Joepye weed, and great lobelia will be covering the fields.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Kids Drug-Free this School Year

(StatePoint) All parents want to feel confident that their children are happy, healthy and focused on the future. The unfortunate reality is that drug use can derail these goals and put a strain on families.

Parents can do a lot to curtail their child’s risk. Here are three tips to help keep kids drugfree this school year and beyond.

1. Get kids active in extracurricular activi-

ties.

Adolescents aged 12 to 17 who participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to use alcohol, cigarettes and illicit drugs, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

Many extracurricular activities are known to have positive effects on students’ grades, attention span and behavior. Afterschool activities will keep kids engaged in something positive while they are outside the classroom and also provide an incentive for staying healthy. If your school lacks a particular activity in which your child expresses interest, investigate offerings at local community centers.

2. Open the lines of communication.

The importance of communicating with your child can’t be overstated. A regular, open dialogue will make children more likely to talk to you about peer pressure and stress—the kinds of factors that can lead to drug use.

You can foster communication by regularly sitting down to dinner as a family and checking in on homework and school projects.

Encourage children to invite friends over, so you know more about others with whom they

spend their time.

3. Test your child.

If you suspect your child is experimenting with drugs, there are tools that can help you find out for certain in the privacy of your own home. Seventy-five percent of high school students have used addictive substances, according to CASAColumbia.

Fraser Finds Passion In Preaching St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Rev. Ann Benton Fraser fit together like a match made in Heaven.

Fraser is the first rector at the church, which moved from a mission to a parish in 2008. Fraser who came to the church in 2009, appreciates the congregation "because they mean to be Episcopalians. They are thoughtful people who want to dig deeply and learn about their faith.

Fraser grew up in Louisiana in a family who was active in their Episcopal parish. She was an actively involved in the church's youth

program locally and at the state level. She grew up attending a church camp, and it was at that camp, when she was a counselor during college, where the seed was planted for a life in the church.

"I came alive there," she said, adding that working as a counselor made her realize that she wanted that commitment to her faith to be a lifelong vocation.

After graduating from LSU, Fraser worked for a few years at a non-profit before attending the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee. Following graduation, Fraser served two years in Manhattan in a fellowship program. There, she heard that St. Paul's was looking for a rector.

"I had been looking all over and I knew that the Episcopal Church in Mississippi was a healthy place to

For Laundry Night, church members select a laundry in town to visit and spend time talking with the patrons and paying for a wash load or two.

Preserving the Past - Childers Hill woman uses canning to feed her family, body and soul

By Galen Holley Childers Hill - The process originated in a time when folks had to preserve precious, summer produce through cold, unforgiving winters, and Nettie Ruth Stackins still uses canning as a way to nourish her family. "My mother and brother raise the gardens and my sisters and I do the canning," said Stackins, a Childers Hill resident who enjoys the craft of "putting up" as the old-timers call it, that is sealing vegetables in quart jars to be eaten later. Mason jars, a pressure cooker and plenty of fresh, garden goods are the tools of Stackins's trade, along with knowledge of the craft, passed down to her by her mother, Edith, and grandmother, Irene, on sweltering, summer mornings and evenings, in a kitchen made hot from within and without, blanching snap beans and tomatoes. "It's something that we did together and I enjoy the taste, the memories and the just process of canning," said Stackins.

Focal point Kitchens are as stubborn as mules. They plain refuse to yeild their places as the focal point of the home. Families today spend a lot of time in front of the television or, worse, with their eyes glued to their phones, ignoring each other, but kitchens are where the real sharing happens. That's where folks, especially in the South, get fed. It's where men raised right still take off their hats, where decent family stories get passed down over clinking dominoes and the real good ones get whispered over the fanned-out tops of playing cards, where leftover bacon and biscuits sit out on a paper plate and folks grab bites right up until supper.

For Stackins, her kitchen is where she talks to her nieces and nephews while she fixes their favorites, like her potato salad, or carrot cake or fried corn. Something about food and the preparing of it, stirring the mayonaise into the potato salad or licking the spoon and bowl after pouring the cake batter, brings family members closer, Stackins said. "I have a lot of great memories of cooking with my mother and siblings and I cherish those times," said Stackins.

Skilled craft As Stackins put it, the process of canning isn't complicated, but it takes a seasoned touch. The steps are simple enough. Start with fresh tomatoes, for example. First, peel them. Then, bring them to a boil for about 10 minutes.

While the tomatoes are boiling one should warm up the Mason jars by submerging them in hot water for a few minutes, according to Stackins. "One shouldn't pour scalding, hot tomatoes into cool glass," Stackins said. Stackins warms up her lids in hot water too, so that they'll be malleable and seal nicely. The pressure cooker should have just enough water to cover the submerged jars, Stackins said.

Once she pours in the tomatoes and screws on the lids, Stackins can put seven jars at a time in her cooker, she said. Finally, Stackins locks down the cooker and 11

pounds of pressure and about 15 minutes later, voila, canned tomatoes, great for use as a soup base, to add to spaghetti or to just eat with a gooey grilled cheese or a hot, buttered pone of corn bread and a wedge of sweet onion. The duration of pressurized cooking varies according to the type of cooker one uses, as well as the type of food being canned, Stackins said. "You open the cooker and hope to hear each lid pop softly, which tells you they are properly sealed," said Stackins.

The produce will keep as long as the seal on the jar holds. As Stackins whimsically pointed out, many canners have closets and pantries full of dusty, old jars that time has forgotten, their contents, like butter beans or jelly, still as savory and delicious as the day they were canned.

Six Ways to Save On Your Next Car

By Nathaniel Sillin Looking for an eco-friendly subcompact or the thrills that come with a sports car? Perhaps the practicality of a sedan or a spacious SUV better fits your needs? No matter what type of vehicle is calling your name, planning your purchase can help you save as much money as possible.

Consider these six savings tips while shopping for your next car.

Whether you're concerned about upfront, monthly or long-term costs, there's something here that can help you.

1. Look for a fuel-efficient car.

Buying a hybrid or all-electric vehicle rather than a gas guzzler could help you save money on long-run fuel costs.

Plus, state and federal tax credits might give you some additional upfront savings.

If you're sticking to a fully gaspowered car, you can still save money by choosing a fuel-efficient model.

Once you pick a class of car and determine your budget, use the Environmental Protection Agency's miles-per-gallon rating for each vehicle to estimate and compare the monthly fuel costs.

2. Compare the long-term costs of different cars. In addition to fuel, consider the long-term costs of maintenance, repairs, insurance, taxes, depreciation, fees and financing.

To help you with the calculations, Kelly Blue Book has a 5-Year Cost to Own tool that lets you compare longterm costs for 2015 and 2016 models.

Edmunds's True Cost to Own® tool does a similar thing for 2010 and newer

models.

3. Buy a "new-to-you" car. Buying a used car rather than the equivalent brand-new model can usually save you money. However, you'll want to look at each used car on an individual basis.

Consider how it feels during a test drive and its history if you can access it.

You may be able to buy a warranty for your used car, or you could purchase a certified pre-owned (CPO) car from a dealership. Dealers inspect CPOs before selling them with a manufacturer's warranty. If you're not buying a CPO, you could hire a mechanic to perform a pre-purchase inspection. It's not a guarantee, but the inspection can help ensure you won't get caught off guard by any unexpected issues.

With the right deal on a used car, you might be able to buy the car outright instead of financing the purchase.

By paying cash, you avoid accruing interest, making monthly payments and worrying about loan-origination fees.

4. Negotiate the purchase. Most

people don't enjoy haggling with a car salesperson, but even non-confrontational negotiating tactics can help you save money.

For example, once you pick a make and model, you could shop online for available vehicles at nearby dealerships. Reach out to each dealer's internet sales team and ask for their best total cost, inclusive of taxes and fees.

Take the lowest offer and ask the other dealers if they can beat it. If one of them can, take your new lowest quote and again ask the rest of the dealers to go lower. Keep going until you get a price that works best for you.

You could use the same tactic with dealerships outside your area.

However, you may have to travel and pick up the car or pay to transport it.

Another helpful resource is negotiation services like Authority Auto, which negotiates competitive prices on new and pre-owned cars. For a fee, the online service negotiates each part of the process to get you a better deal and

take some of the stress out of the carbuying experience and only charge a percentage of what they save you.

5. Consider leasing instead of purchasing. Taking out a lease is similar to purchasing a long-term rental. You'll have to return or buy the car at the end of the lease, and you may have to pay fees if you drive too many miles or damage the vehicle.

The lease down payment and monthly payments will be lower than buying the same car outright. However, you can still save money by shopping around and negotiating because the down payment and monthly payments depend on the vehicle's sale price.

If you like to drive a new car and always want to be under warranty, starting a new lease every few years could make sense. On the other hand, there's more long-term value in buying if you tend to have a lot of wear and tear on your cars.

6. Use alternative means of transportation. Forgoing the purchase of a car altogether might not work for

I keep my pattern from tearing by spraying them with spray starch. 3. I also sharpen needles by stitching through very fine sandpaper. These tips have worked for me for many years.”

• “It’s almost time for Scouts to start up again. I have been washing uniforms and sashes, and find this trick to be helpful when it comes time to stitch on badges. Put a bit of plain school glue on the back of your badge, place it where you want it on the sash, then let it dry. It will stay in place long enough to stitch the edges.

When you launder it, the glue will wash right out.” — R.D. in Florida • Solve the case of the tricky screw: Coat problem screws with clear fingernail polish right before you insert them. They will hold tightly after that.

1. All students must believe within their hearts "I will do my best this school term."

That is the necessary contract a student must make for self.

2. "I will respect myself, first of all. And, I will respect the other students and all teachers, administrators, janitors, secretaries, and cafeteria workers.

I will respect other's property and obey my parents and teachers about bullying.

Besides, I will report to my teacher, a school official if necessary, and my parents if someone begins to bully me or another student.

3. " I understand the need for security at my school; therefore, I will follow the official's instructions." Security is necessary for the smooth operation of any institution.

4. "I believe reading, writing, science and mathematics are most important to my success regardless of what I choose to do in life."

Basically, one's success in life can be judged by how well one does in those subjects. It's like a map to success in life.

5. Parents, it's your turn____ regardless of the level of training your child is enrolled in to study. Parents, you are the students' overseers.

Love and observe your child.

Praise them for their good jobs. Everybody loves praise, even adults, like us.

Yet, correct your child when needed.

Parents, you and the schools working together is the best way to insure your child will receive a good education.

Parents, if you disagree with something you think is going on at the school, express it to the teacher or an appropriate school official, not your child.

Negative communication about your child's school in front of your child will accomplish no positive results. Remember,

children are supposed to believe in their parents. Always make sure your child is obeying all the school's rules. That is significant to your child's success. If the school has a dress code, it's the parents' responsibility that the rule is followed. Know what your child wears to school each day. If you are at work when the child leaves for school, you and your child can work out a plan for accountability. By the way, Your child can maintain his individuality without disobeying the dress code; also, decent hair styles and hair color for school needs to be considered.

6. Schools have a MAJOR responsibility!

That responsibility is to educate all students: the accelerated, the average, the low achievers and the handicapped.

Being a retired teacher and later a retired counselor educator, I know that is a challenge.

However, most educators welcome that Job. Hopefully, like me, most educators chose that job because they love helping students. The major roles of the educators include: 1. Quality___ that means the teachers must follow the state guidelines and instruct their students so each receives what is needed at his/her level of understanding.

A. Objectivity______ that simply means the educators will be non-bias regardless of levels, or any other label placed on the child.

B. Administrators have responsibilities too. Besides the total operation of the their buildings, the principals must know what is being taught in each classroom within his/ her school, usually this is done with lessons plans and acceptable classroom visits.

C. Finally, all school employees must be qualified and dedicated.

7. The Community____ am I saying people living around any school have a responsibility? Yes, I am. Driving to or in and around the school requires obeying all posted signs.

Attending school functions require following the rules of the occasion. Local citizen may wish to join the Parent Teacher Association, if there is one. Retired persons within the community can volunteer their services. Some of you may be retired teachers, principals, policemen, security persons, librarians, or persons who can perform services needed at the school.

Contact the school administrator. They usually welcome volunteers. The good news is, volunteers have the right to choose the day or days and time.

To the students, parents, all educators, and the community too, remember each of you plays a significant role in the education process. Grilled Ratatouille Pasta

Blueberry-Raspberry Summer Pie When you combine fresh blueberries and raspberries, you combine much more than berries. You combine magic!

1 (4-serving) package sugarfree vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix 1 (4-serving) package sugarfree raspberry gelatin 1 1/4 cups diet lemon-lime soda pop 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 1/4 cups fresh blueberries 3/4 cup fresh red raspberries 1 (6-ounce) purchased graham cracker pie crust 2 (2 1/2-inch) graham cracker squares, made into crumbs 1/2 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1. In a large saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry gelatin and soda pop. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring often. Remove from heat.

Stir in cinnamon. Add blueberries and raspberries. Mix gently just to combine.

2. Spoon hot mixture into pie crust.

Evenly sprinkle graham cracker crumbs over top. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. When serving, top each piece with 1 tablespoon whipped topping. Makes 8 servings.

This unique take on ratatouille allows you pair that delicious summertime grilled flavor with pasta!

Salt Pepper 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed with press 1 medium red onion 2 medium zucchini 1 large eggplant 2 large orange or yellow peppers, quartered 1 pound (about 4) ripe plum tomatoes, cut lengthwise in half 1 pound gemelli or elbow pasta 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 1. Prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling on medium-high. Heat covered 6-quart pot of water to boiling on high. Add 2 teaspoons salt.

2. In small bowl, whisk vinegar, oil and garlic.

3. Cut onion crosswise into 1/2inch-thick slices. Trim zucchini and eggplant; cut diagonally into 1/2inch-thick slices. Brush half of vinegar mixture on one side of onion, zucchini, eggplant, peppers and tomatoes.

4. Grill tomatoes 6 minutes, zucchini and eggplant 10 minutes, and peppers and onion 12 minutes, or until all vegetables are tender and charred, turning over once. Transfer vegetables to cutting board. Cool slightly, then cut into 1/2 inch pieces.

5. Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling water as label directs. Drain; return to pot.

6. Stir mustard into remaining vinegar mixture. Toss with pasta along with parsley, vegetables, 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Serves 6. ?
