Family Makes Mother's Day for One Corinth Lady Very Special By Angela Rogalski

By Angela Rogalski n a world of silence there are many things that a person within the deaf community might miss: the sounds of the birds in the trees, the ocean waves gently lapping at the shoreline, or the words of someone they cherish saying "I love you." But when you define those things within the context of someone who has been deaf their entire life; how do we know what they're really missing? Do we make presumptions about what they can enjoy or feel? It could be that a person who has never known the sound of someone's voice or any of the other beautiful experiences described above has a deeper and more meaningful appreciation for them than we could ever know. Chameka Mayes-Smith knows quite a bit about the deep emotions of someone who is deaf; her aunt, Angela Leggett, has been without her hearing since birth. Leggett is a native of Corinth, Mississippi and was born deaf. She attended Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, Mississippi at the tender age of 5-years-old, making departing from family and loved ones very difficult for such a young child. Mother's Day happens once a year, or at least, that's what the calendars indicate, even though if you're a mom, you know it's a stint that all of us enjoy 365 days a year. But for that one Sunday in May, the rigors of motherhood are set aside and families come together to honor and respect the woman or women who have held their family together over the years and worked tirelessly and endlessly to give them everything they've needed.
