Family Makes Mother's Day for One Corinth Lady Very Special

By Angela Rogalski n a world of silence there are many things that a person within the deaf community might miss: the sounds of the birds in the trees, the ocean waves gently lapping at the shoreline, or the words of someone they cherish saying "I love you." But when you define those things within the context of someone who has been deaf their entire life; how do we know what they're really missing? Do we make presumptions about what they can enjoy or feel? It could be that a person who has never known the sound of someone's voice or any of the other beautiful experiences described above has a deeper and more meaningful appreciation for them than we could ever know.

Chameka Mayes-Smith knows quite a bit about the deep emotions of someone who is deaf; her aunt, Angela Leggett, has been without her hearing since birth.

Leggett is a native of Corinth, Mississippi and was born deaf. She attended Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, Mississippi at the tender age of 5-years-old, making departing from family and loved ones very difficult for such a young child.

Mother's Day happens once a year, or at least, that's what the calendars indicate, even though if you're a mom, you know it's a stint that all of us enjoy 365 days a year. I'll bet every one of you can probably name the best-known product that goes with each of the following brand names: Campbell's Michael Kors Levi's Kellogg's Kodak John Deere Oprah Apple Nike Blue Bell Polo Lexus Jif Emerson How many did you get correct? Probably all of them, right?

Let's face it, we live in a society where most people are "brand" conscious? When people talk about products they have bought recently one of the first questions that come up is, "What brand is it"?

What is a brand?

The term 'brand' originally derived from the stamping or marking of cattle or sheep for identification purposes. Outside of that use, branding usually had a

negative connotation.

Slaves, criminals, and adulterers were branded or tattooed to mark their disgraces. However, most people associate a brand with words or symbols that identify not only a product but also its manufacturer or producer.

Have you ever bought something and not looked at the label?

Maybe it was food or clothing and you forgot to read the label or read it wrong and experienced the consequences of that?

We have come to identify many products simply by their 'brand' names and in some cases even the quality of something by a certain 'brand' name. Even though, I wear different types of tennis shoes, I prefer Nikes because I know they make good quality shoes that will last me a long time. It's not uncommon for people to judge the level of sophistication of others by what 'brands' they own or use! Young people are very conscious about the brands of clothes they wear because it can make the difference on acceptance or harassment in some teen circles!

Today brands are everything and companies spend vast amounts of money to define their products and how they are portrayed. Yet, brands are no longer confined to companies. More and more people are concerned about their personal brands.

As I began to celebrate my 15 years of being in business, I thought about two things - my business brand and my personal brand. Because I allowed my personal brand to influence my business brand when I started the Community News Flash in 2001, I made a promise to myself that I would never sell or print alcohol

or cigarettes nor would I publish any negative stories. Did the thought ever run across my mind?

Sure, it did especially when the economy did a downturn.

However, fifteen years later, I can say I'm glad I didn't waver. I've been rocking along without having to sell one alcohol or cigarette ad or print one negative story. In order to achieve career and personal success, you have to be willing to stand out from the crowd.

For one Corinth woman, Mother's Day means one word each and every year: family. And for Barbara Walker that's all she needs or wants to make her day memorable. Walker is the daughter of the late Joe Willie Davis and Nannie Miller-Damons and has eight children, is the grandmother of ten and the great-grandmother of nine. As a retired cafeteria manager for over 30 years with the West Corinth Elementary School, she still loves to cook, but will tell anyone who asks very quickly that on Mother's Day her kitchen is closed.

"That's my day," Walker said laughing. "When Mother's Day rolls around, I sit back and relax."

As well she should. For over 30 years Walker enjoyed her job at West Corinth Elementary School, especially the interaction with the children and the joy she got from cooking, but said on Mother's Day she just loves spending that day with her children and grandchildren.

"I really enjoy cooking for my family," she added. "When they all come home, I love it. And a lot of them come over on the weekends all during the year. So, I get to cook for them quite often. But on Mother's Day, I let them do for

Walker said the entire family gathers at her house every Mother's Day, or as many of them that can, as some of her family lives out of state, and that's when the memories come back and she relives those days when her children were small and they were all at home.

"It feels just the same as when all of them were children. But today, my grandchildren and greatgrandchildren allow me to experience my own babies' childhood all over again. It's a simple joy that means so much. I also love my church family. I'm an active member of City Road Temple C.M.E. Church in Corinth. I am one of the oldest siblings in my family too and my sisters and brothers join us for Mother's Day as well, so I am very blessed. Whether it's Mother's Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas, when we have family gatherings, my siblings try to come over and participate too. So, it's a family day. And to me, that's what Mother's Day is all about."

As a child, Mayes-Smith had always been amazed at how her aunt overcame any obstacles or barriers she encountered as a deaf woman. Her aunt never let anything stop or hinder her from accomplishing any goal and her faith in God was and still is unshakeable.

"My aunt has been my inspiration throughout my life," Mayes-Smith said. "In fact, my present career path I give her credit for motivating me to follow. I was born and raised in Corinth and graduated from Corinth High School in 2000. I'm also a former Miss Lane College 2005, so I have my aunt's love for pageants. However, my background is in leadership; I was formerly a campus director for Strayer University, in Georgia and on the Delaware campus as well. Today, I am living in Atlanta,

The only way I could communicate was through facial expressions or expressive writing. However, as I grown into my preteen years my Aunt pushed me into learning the entire alphabet and additional finger spelling. Now as an adult, after long studies and examinations of the Deaf Culture really has encouraged me to learn more and to become actively fluent in the language.

As a native of Corinth, Mississippi, Chameka's Aunt Angela was born Deaf and attended Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, Mississippi at the age of 5 years old. Departing from family and love ones at an early age was a difficult time to accept independent living. However, Angela attended school in Jackson during the Academic school year, and visit Corinth during the summers. As a result, Angela successfully completed her high school diploma and attended Hinds Community College. Angela later went on to marry, and relocate to Hattiesburg, Mississippi as a young adult.

As a youth, Chameka was always amazed how her Aunt overcame any obstacles or barriers she encountered as a Deaf woman. Angela never let anything stop or hinder her from accomplishing any goal. In fact, two things she and Chameka have in common is traveling and mentoring to others. The Capricorns both enjoy visiting different states with family, friends and sometimes take pleasure in just traveling alone. Back in the days, Greyhound was the primary transportation for many individuals who did not prefer to fly, Chameka can recall many times when she was so nervous for her Aunt, however as she grown spiritually, she understood that it has always been GOD's Continuous Grace in everything we do in life.

In concluding, being a niece of a phenomenal Deaf woman has been one of the culminating events of my blessed life. More than anything, she has helped me

Mayes-Smith has been at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf for a little over a year and while she is on the business side of the school, being in administration, she said that she still feels inspired by the students she encounters on a daily basis and also by the challenges and accomplishments her aunt faced over the years when Mayes-Smith was growing up.

"I grew up with three other siblings and we lived with our mom and dad," she said. "However, both my parents worked, so my mom would get her sister, my aunt, to babysit for her. My aunt basically helped to rear us growing up and as a result of her being deaf and the fact that we needed to know how to communicate with each other, my aunt taught us children finger-spelling first, so that we could all tell her if we needed or wanted anything."

Don’t Just Sit There Numerous studies have shown us two things: It’s never too late to start being active, and a small amount of activity is better than none when it comes to better health.

Now there’s an additional benefit: Being active helps keep depression and other psychological issues at bay. Not only that, but a recent study shows that those with “psychological distress are four times more likely to be functionally limited.” The study, done on 91,000 adults age 65 and older, indicates that one-third of us don’t get regular exercise, and the number goes up even more for those 75 and older.

Another study on the same topic came to a serious conclusion: Those who have depression had better results from exercising three times a week than those who took drugs for their symptoms. All it took was getting 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise.

Other researchers have approached senior health from a different angle: A Psychological Bulletin news release from the Harvard School of Public Health reported on a study that compared psychological well-being to heart health.

It found that psychological wellbeing reduces the chance of heart attack and stroke. Specifically, being optimistic, happy and satisfied with life can reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event. Somehow those emotions not only protect us, but can slow down existing disease.

How then do we use this information? A simplistic look might be this: If we elevate our mood with exercise and gain a sense of emotional wellbeing, we’re also helping our heart.

And looking on the bright side of life gives an additional benefit: Those of us who are optimistic cut our risk of heart attack in half.

Weightlifting stops the wasting away of muscles and builds them up.

Older people are not going to develop the same muscle size that a 20-yearold can, but they can see a marked improvement in their strength and an increase in muscle size through weightlifting.

For your specific thigh problem, the squat is a good exercise. From the standing position, you bend your knees until your thighs are parallel to the ground. You don’t have to touch your heels with your buttocks. Lower yourself only to the position I mentioned. Farther than that can hurt the knees.

Start out doing the exercise with no additional weight. Your body weight is enough at first. As you gain experience and strength, you can use additional weight, either a barbell supported behind your neck and on your shoulders, or you can hold on to weights. When you start using weights, exercise three times a week with a full day’s rest between exercise sessions.

For your abdomen, the bicycle maneuver is one of the best exercises.

Lie on the floor and raise your legs straight up. Then bend the knees to a

right angle so your lower legs are parallel to the floor. Now start pedaling as though you were riding a bike.

When spring cleaning in the garden is completed, it will be time to implement the plans you have made for your summer garden. Whether your garden area comprises several acres or is limited to only a few well-placed containers, you will enjoy the process of selecting new plants and can look forward to spending time planting and tending your garden.

• Continue planting transplants of annuals, vegetables, and herbs. It is best to choose short, stocky plants. If nursery plants appear leggy, trim them back before planting to encourage them to fill out. Remember that the best defense against future problems is to select healthy plants to add to your garden.

• Summer and fall blooming bulbs such as calla lilies, ginger lilies, cannas, tuberoses, gladioli, and dahlias may be added to the garden this month.

• Mulch flower beds with 2-3 inches of organic mulch to deter weeds, conserve moisture, and give planted areas a finished appearance.

• Continue pulling weeds and be diligent with lawn edging to prevent aggressive grasses from creeping into flower beds. Use a sharp spade, edger, or string trimmer to cut a definite line between grass and flower beds.

• Maintain a regular spraying and feeding schedule for roses.

Use a fertilizer especially formulated for roses. Mulch roots to prevent weeds and conserve moisture. To help discourage diseases, keep fallen leaves and petals picked up and water roses early in the day so that the foliage will dry completely before nightfall. Monitor plants for diseases and pests and treat any problems as soon as they arise.

• Plant containers to beautify entryways, decks, patios, and porches. Use small shrubs and trees, annuals and perennials, vines, bulbs, and herbs.

When selecting plants for containers, read horticultural labels so that you will be able to group plants with similar light and water requirements. Always use a good quality potting soil and water and fertilize regularly throughout the growing season.

Gardening Definitions Botanically, flowering plants are classified as annual, biennial, or perennial. Annual plants germinate, flower, and die in one year. Some true annuals are corn, lettuce, peas, watermelon, zinnias, and marigolds.

A flowering plant that takes two years to complete its life cycle is termed a biennial.

Stems, leaves, and roots grow during the first year, then the second year, the plant flowers and produces fruit and seeds before dying. True biennials flower only once. Parsley, carrots, sweet William, foxgloves, and hollyhocks are examples of biennial plants.

Perennials are non-woody plants that live more than two years. They grow and bloom during spring, summer, and fall and then die back every winter.

Some examples are daylilies, hostas, peonies, jonquils, and iris. Many perennials can be grown as annuals. In our area, where we have freezing temperatures, we treat impatiens, wax begonias, coleus, geraniums, petunias, and many other peren-

nials as annuals.

Siberian Iris Siberian iris, a perennial that grows from a rhizome, is a very satisfactory plant for gardens in our zone 7. Its grayish green, sword-like leaves are ½ to 1 inch wide and grow to 2 feet tall. In spring to early summer, the bloom stalks rise above the leaves and hold 2 to 5 blooms which open in succession on each stem. The showy flowers can be purple, blue, deep red, white, or yellow. Butterfly Gardening In order to attract butterflies to your garden, you will need to provide a sunny area, have both host and nectar plants, and restrict the use of pesticides.

Nectar plants provide nourishment for the butterflies. Some useful plants include butterfly weed, threadleaf coreopsis, coneflower, Joe-Pye weed, bee balm, rudbeckia, verbena, salvia, phlox, lantana, zinnia, liatris, and Stokes' aster.

The host plants offer food for caterpillars. Abelia, dill, butterfly bush, Queen Anne's lace, fennel, sweet bay magnolia, parsley, passion flower vine, and sassafras are good choices as host plants.

Look for the spicebush swallowtail, Mississippi's state butterfly.

An Excellent Teacher, Defined

Albertine 'Peaches' Warren

By Donna Langston What sounded, to me, like squeals of student excitement, could be heard a long down the hallway at Corinth Middle School, as I followed three student escorts to Mrs. Albertine Warren's 5th grade classroom. The closer we got to it, sounds of "Ooh! OOOH!!

I know! I know!! Pick me, pick me!!!" became clearer and much, much louder. As I quietly eased into the room, I took a seat out of the way and began observing the lively group of students.

They were engaging in a competitive - boys vs girls JeopardyŠ style of science questions and answers and it was easy to see there were no bored students. They were jumping from their seats with their hands in the air, clamoring for Mrs. Warren to call on them for the answer to her questions.

To describe her students as enthusiastic participants would be an understatement.

It's not difficult to imag-

ine that Warren, as a student, may have been much like them. She moved fast and was quick to get to each student, checking their homework as she made her way around the room. She attended Frazier Elementary School and Sims High School in Holly Springs, MS. In high school, she was active in band and choir, and was the school news reporter for WDIA radio station.

Furthering her education, Warren earned her BA degree in music from Grambling State University.

Being a teacher's aide at Head-Start centers, during breaks from school, showed her teaching was for her, so she earned her Master's degree in Elementary Education from Bethel University, and certification in Educational Leadership from the University of MS. Along the way to currently teaching fifth grade science, math, English, reading, and social studies at Corinth Middle School, she taught kindergarten at Johns Street

Day Care Center, worked as a social worker for Mississippi Action for Progress, taught at South Corinth Elementary School, and has previously been Assistant Principal at South Corinth School and Corinth Middle School. After almost 37 years, it is obvious that Warren has a natural calling toward and a love for education, and she credits the Corinth School District for enabling teachers and students to have an enriched educational environment.

Warren speaks with a soft-spoken passion about teaching and her students saying, "I've always enjoyed working with the children.

They require me to be on my toes and I'm always challenged to think out-of-thebox." There is no passive teaching attitude in her classroom, where she provides a positive learning environment conducive for learning.

Just before they were to go to another class, I took the opportunity to ask her class a couple of questions: "Who can tell me the definition of a great teacher?" I asked. Jalen Stackins said a good teacher was "stern but nice". Cole Butler agreed.

Samuel Curtis added that she has to "love her job", Icsis Harris said she needs to be "intelligent", and Macy Hall determined that she needed to be "challenging". When I asked if they knew a teacher that was all that and more, they all pointed to Mrs. Warren. Sincere validation from the heart of a student.

For Mrs. Warren, it doesn't get much better than that.

Outside of teaching, Warren is very involved with Macedonia M. B. Church, where she has attended and served as pianist for over thirty years.

Stafford Entrusts Her Service to God

Reverend Loretta A. Stafford

By Nathan Weber Growing up in the small town of Biggersville, Miss., Loretta Stafford's comes from a close-knit loving family with strong Christian values. Today, Reverend Loretta A. Stafford shares those strong Christian values with her congregation at Warren Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Mantachie, Miss, where she serves as Pastor.

"I'm the eldest of 6 children, two girls and four boys," Stafford said.

"We grew up in a Christian home where we went to Church as a family.

Our family environment was based on family love, Bibical teachings, and fellowship with our Church family."

From an early age, Stafford loved going to Church, and serving God. She said that she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 12-years-old. Stafford enjoyed public speaking and chose to apply two of her passions.

"As I grew older, my relationship with Christ grew stronger," Stafford said. "In 1990, at the age of 16 I competed in an oratory contest at Lane Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church and her subject Matthew 6:10, 'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.' I ended up winning the competition."

"At the age of 17, I received a call from Brother TJ Davis to speak at City Road Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Dr. Eddie Jumper on a Youth Day Program," Stafford said. "My speech was taken from Proverbs 22:6 'Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it, which became a personal story of my relationship with God." This calling to the Word of God for Stafford began to fester in her veins, but she struggled to overcome the obstacles presented to a female in ministry. Stafford prayed and surrendered to the call of God. In 2000, Stafford was on a Bible trip in Decatur, Ill. A preacher came

at the Mississippi State Senate at the request of her longtime friend to speak that night and his sermon revolved around a woman running Senator Chad McMahan, on March 28, 2016. from the call to surrender her heart to God. That same year, Stafford dealt with the crushing blow of losing her father, Charles "Jam-Up" Stafford. Charles and her mother, Rachel Stafford, had been the biggest supporters of Loretta and were beacons of constant support and care.

Although she dealt with many tribulations in the year of 2000, Stafford delivered her first sermon on Sunday, December 10, under the leadership of Reverend Henry Damons Sr., at her home Church, Oak Grove Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Biggersville, Mississippi. She preached from John 3:16 and her subject, "John 3:16 Enough Said."

"This was especially tough and emotional after losing my father, but this was something I had been working and praying for as a servant of God," Stafford said. "I had found my calling and could feel my father's presence in the service, as I ministered the Word of God." For the last 16 years, Stafford has worked tirelessly praying, learning and teaching others the Word of God. She remarked that she is very proud and loves her congregation in Mantachie, Miss. at the Warren Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the relationship she has developed with Reverend Albert (Lady Suzette) Copeland and the Mt, Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church.

"We are a small country church with 30 members, but we are a very loving and spiritual church," Stafford said. "I preach the Word of God with relevant and timely stories from my own personal life experiences to my congregation. We are a Church family that love each other and share forth the love of God. Our congregation is here to love, grow and serve."

Her work as a preacher does not , stop there. Tips to Save Money on Paying Debt (StatePoint) Over extending oneself on highinterest rate revolving debt purchases is not uncommon. Indeed, U.S. households who use credit cards have an average of $15,799 in credit card debt, according to the non-profit Consolidated Credit Counseling.

“If you’re not strategic about the way you make repayments, you could end up spending more paying down your debt, and at rates that may increase over time,” says Stephanie Cutler, vice president of Wells Fargo`s Personal Lines and Loans.

A Visit to the Holy Land

J. Moffett Walker, Retired Counselor & Author The week of Easter found me in the beautiful state of Florida.

While visiting a son and his family in Hollywood and a sister and her family in Jacksonville, I grabbed the opportunity to go see the Holy Land in Orlando.

The Holy Land there is a wonderful architectural creation of reality.

Florida's Holy Land experience was worth purchasing the $50.00 ticket, standing in lines, walking across the campus, viewing miniature creations, meeting tourists and watching professional actors and actresses perform. It was educational observing historical displays and seeing/ hearing the dramatic presentations. Choosing from more than thirty-five presentations was not easy. However, I selected five for my first visit. I do plan to go back again.

To begin, I went to see the, "Tiny Town of Bethlehem." This room showed a miniature representation of the town of Jesus' birth. Seeing this miniature town helped me to understand two other presentations that dealt with the birth of Jesus and His crucifixion.

Next, I saw, "Jerusalem Model A. D. 66." It is known as the largest indoor model of the Holy City. One interesting point I learned was the origin of an old saying often used, "screaming from the roof top" came

from Jerusalem. Certain parts of the city the houses were built rather close together. The tour guide explained this possibly was the less economic section.

Residents sat on roof tops somewhat as we use our patios, and they talked by yelling across to each other.

The third session was, "The Fullness of Time Has Come." I became excited seeing and hearing actors and actresses perform familiar scriptures. Near the end of that portion we walked to another room and saw videos of persons representing Biblical characters. Royal curtains covered ten doors. As the curtains opened, one at a time, tourists saw pictures of well-known Biblical characters such as: Moses, David, Samuel and John.

As the pictures appeared familiar scriptures by or about those persons were quoted.

Finally, I witnessed, "Passion of the Christ Live Drama," an 85 minutes drama, kept the audience of about thousands plus, applauding. Although the story began with the birth of Jesus, including His life on earth showing several miracles He performed, nothing was more dramatic as His Crucifixion. It was significant to me also because I saw all of this on Good Friday.

The trip to Florida was an enjoyable one, but the trip to the Holy Land made the trip more worthwhile.

Honey-Glazed Radishes and Turnips

American Cheese Meatloaf If you ask the average person to list his favorite comfort foods, chances are that meatloaf would be on that list. Here is a wonderful new version to try. I predict that it will become a new favorite in your family.

16 ounces extra-lean ground turkey or beef 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon dried fine breadcrumbs 1 cup finely chopped onion 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reducedfat tomato soup 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 3 (3/4-ounce) slices reducedfat American cheese 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with butterflavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs, onion, green pepper and 1/3 cup tomato soup. Mix well to combine.

Pat mixture into prepared loaf pan.

Bake for 45 minutes.

2. Stir mustard, parsley flakes and black pepper into remaining tomato soup. Spread soup mixture evenly over partially baked meatloaf. Evenly arrange cheese slices over top. Bake for an additional 15 minutes or until meatloaf is cooked through and cheese is melted. Place loaf pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Cut into 6 servings.

Freezes well.

• Each serving equals: 200 calories, 8g fat, 17g protein, 15g carb., 484mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 1 Starch.

This quick vegetable side dish is perfect for spring parties. Radishes and turnips with a honey glaze and sprinkled with fresh mint and chive are a bright addition to any menu.

2 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 large shallot, finely chopped 1 1/2 pounds radishes, trimmed and cut in half or quarters if large 1 1/2 pounds small turnips, trimmed, peeled, and each cut into 8 wedges 1/3 cup water 1/4 cup lower-sodium chicken broth 1 tablespoon honey Salt Pepper 2 tablespoons thinly sliced mint leaves, plus whole leaves for garnish 1 tablespoon finely chopped chives 1. In 12-inch skillet, melt margarine or butter on medium-high. Add shallot and cook 2 minutes or until golden and tender, stirring occasionally. Add radishes and turnips; stir until well-coated. Stir in water, broth, honey, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook 15 minutes.

2. Uncover and cook 7 to 10 minutes longer or until vegetables are glazed and most of liquid has evaporated, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in mint and chives.

Transfer to serving platter and garnish with mint leaves. Makes 8 sidedish servings.

Open in Case of Emergency When I recently received a spur-of-the-moment dinner invitation, I politely asked if my hostess wanted me to bring along a dessert. She was grateful for the offer and said that anything I wanted to bring would be great.

I went home thinking I had the basic ingredients to put together a quick dessert, but I found the cupboard was bare.

I'd just given a dinner party and, evidently, I'd forgotten to restock my go-to dessert components. That's the beauty of a box cake mix.

You can open up a box of cake mix and turn it into almost anything. By making a few changes to the basic recipe, I've used the same box cake mix to make everything from a quick crust for a fruit dessert to a pan of brownies. I've even used recipes from the back of the box when I was at a lost for inspiration.

This recipe for Quick Chocolate Carmel Cake is a great "open in case of emergency" dessert. Now that I've used my last box of cake mix, I need to go to the store and restock my pantry!

QUICK CHOCOLATE CARMEL CAKE 1 box German chocolate cake mix (extra-moist type, or with pudding) Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake-mix box 1 can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk 1 jar (16 to 17 ounce) caramel, butterscotch or fudge

the wooden spoon handle while you're using it to make the holes, so occasionally wipe off the handle.

The caramel topping will be easier to drizzle if it has been kept at room temperature. If refrigerated, remove the lid and microwave on High about 15 seconds.

Instead of the toffee chips or bits, coarsely chop 5 bars (1.4 oz each) chocolate-covered English toffee candy, and sprinkle on top of the cake.

Trying to target a new audience? topping 1 container (8 ounce) frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 bag (8 ounce) toffee chips or bits 1. Heat oven to 350 F (325 F for dark or nonstick pan). Bake cake as directed on box for 13by-9-inch pan.

2. Poke top of warm cake every 1/2 inch with handle of wooden spoon. Drizzle milk

evenly over top of cake; let stand until milk has been absorbed into cake. Drizzle with caramel topping. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen cake. Cover and refrigerate about 2 hours or until chilled.

3. Spread whipped topping over top of cake. Sprinkle with toffee chips. Store covered in refrigerator.
