LoveHer Charm School: Shaping Hearts, Building Leaders and Inspiring Change Designed with intention. Driven by impact. Defined by love. That is the vision behind LoveHer Charm School, an initiative created by Demetra Tubbs Sherer to help young women discover their worth, strengthen their confidence, embrace their voices and walk boldly in their purpose. More than a traditional charm school, LoveHer Charm School focuses on healing, self-discovery, personal development, mentorship and leadership. The program helps young women recognize the strength they already possess while developing the practical skills and confidence they need to navigate life. Tubbs Sherer is an author, speaker, coach and community leader who has built her life's work around turning personal experiences into opportunities to help others. Rooted in faith, strength and real-life experience, she uses her voice to encourage people to heal, grow and step boldly into who they were created to be. Her professional background includes serving as a former executive director, award-winning entrepreneur and multi-million-dollar real estate producer. She has led teams, launched successful ventures and owned an upscale neo-soul restaurant that became a gathering place for connection, conversation and community. Tubbs Sherer also made history as the first Black woman to receive the Restaurant of the Year award from the Governor of Mississippi, an accomplishment that reflects her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. Today, she continues to pour into people through speaking, coaching, mentoring and community leadership. Her approach combines transparency, wisdom, humor and the kind of encouragement that challenges people to rise higher, think bigger and walk confidently in their purpose. LoveHer Charm School provides hands-on workshops Return Address: P.O. Box 1292 Corinth, MS 38835 designed to teach practical life skills that can prepare parPOSTAL PATRON ticipants for challenges and opportunities beyond the program.
Meaningful mentorship connects young women with women who are willing to share their experiences, provide guidance and encourage them to reach higher. The program's Heart to Heart Collective provides a safe environment for real conversations, connection and personal growth. Through shared experiences and encouragement, participants are reminded that they do not have to navigate their journeys alone. Tubbs Sherer's philosophy is reflected in the heart of the LoveHer experience: “We don’t just talk about transformation, we live it. We grow together through real conversations, powerful experiences, and intentional moments that build confidence, spark healing, and strengthen purpose.” That philosophy reflects the belief that meaningful transformation happens through relationships, experiences, encouragement and opportunities to grow. LoveHer Charm School emphasizes that a young woman's transformation is about much more than appearance. It is about developing character, confidence, purpose and leadership. The program encourages young women to become comfortable with who they are while continuing to grow into the person they were created to become. LoveHer Charm School is also seeking women who are willing to serve as mentors and share their stories, wisdom and experiences with the next generation. The community is invited to become part of the mission through mentorship, partnerships and financial support. Contributions can help provide resources, opportunities and life-changing experiences for young women. The message is simple but powerful: Every young woman has value, Demetra Tubbs Sherer a voice and a purpose. By investing in her today, the community can help shape the woman—and potentially the leader—she will become tomorrow. In the vast savannas and dense forests where elephants roam, the social structure of these magnificent creatures offers profound lessons for human society. Adolescent elephants, much like young men, require the guidance and presence of mature males to navigate the complexities of growing up. The absence of father figures, whether in the animal kingdom or in human communities, can have significant repercussions. As we draw parallels between teenage elephants and young men, it becomes evident that the presence of fathers is crucial for the well-being and development of both. Elephants are known for their intricate social structures and deep familial bonds. Within these groups, the role of mature bull elephants is indispensable. Adolescent elephants, particularly males, undergo a critical phase where they learn social norms, behaviors, and survival skills. In the presence of older bulls, young

The Role of Fathers in Shaping the Future: Insights from Elephants to Young Men male elephants learn to manage aggression, understand mating rituals, and develop social etiquette within the herd. In environments where mature males are absent, often due to poaching or human interference, young bull elephants exhibit abnormal behaviors. They become more aggressive, disrupt social harmony, and sometimes engage in destructive activities. This phenomenon underscores the importance of male role models in the animal kingdom, where the guidance of experienced bulls helps channel the energy and curiosity of young males into constructive behaviors. The parallels between adolescent elephants and young men are striking. In human society, the presence of a father or a father figure plays a similarly crucial role in the development of young men. Fathers provide a unique form of mentorship, offering les-
sons in responsibility, discipline, and emotional regulation. They serve as role models, setting examples of how to navigate the challenges of life with integrity and strength. Research consistently shows that young men with active, involved fathers are more likely to succeed academically, exhibit better psychological health, and develop healthier social relationships. Conversely, the absence of a father can lead to a higher risk of engaging in criminal activities, substance abuse, and experiencing emotional distress. The guidance and support from a father figure help young men to develop a sense of identity, self-worth, and a framework for making positive life choices. In both elephants and humans, the absence of male role models creates a void that is difficult to fill. However, recognizing this gap is the first step towards

addressing it. For young men, communities can play a pivotal role by providing mentorship programs, encouraging positive male role models, and fostering environments where young men can receive the guidance they need. Programs that connect young men with mentors—be it through sports, education, or community organizations—can offer the support and direction that may be missing in their lives. Additionally, encouraging fathers to be actively involved in their children's lives, regardless of marital status, can significantly impact the development of young men. The stories of teenage elephants and young men converge on a fundamental truth: the presence of a father or father figure is
indispensable in the journey from adolescence to adulthood. The lessons from the animal kingdom remind us that the roles fathers play are not just about providing for the physical needs but also about nurturing the emotional and social growth of the next generation. As we look to the future, it is imperative to recognize and support the role of fathers in shaping young men who are confident, responsible, and capable of contributing positively to society. Just as mature bull elephants guide their young, so too must human fathers guide their sons, ensuring a legacy of strength, wisdom, and compassion. Whoo! Whoo! Until Next Time! All Aboard!

Think Before You Click: Understanding Social Engineering Scams (StatePoint) October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a reminder that staying safe online starts with understanding how cybercriminals operate. One of the most common scam tactics is social engineering, which uses manipulation to gain access to information, accounts or money. Imagine receiving a text that appears to come from your bank claiming your account has been locked. The message urges you to click a link immediately to restore access. Instead, the link leads to a fake website designed to capture your username, password or authentication code. Social engineering succeeds because it exploits normal human instincts -trust, fear, curiosity or urgency -- to persuade you to act before verifying a request. Awareness and preparedness can help you recognize and avoid social engineering scams. What to Know About Social Engineering It takes many forms. Social engineers may contact you via email (phishing), texts (smishing), phone calls (vishing), social media or fake websites to trick you into sharing sensitive information or clicking malicious links. They may use publicly available information or impersonation tactics to pose as trusted organizations, colleagues, friends or family members. Scammers often create urgency. Unexpected requests that demand immediate action are often a warning sign. The goal is often access. Social engineers may seek passwords, financial information, account access or money. The Anatomy of a Social Engineering Scam • Contact: You receive an email, text, call or social media message. • Trust: The message appears to come from a trusted source. • Urgency: You’re pressured to act quickly or keep the request confidential, so you don’t stop to verify it. • Request: You’re asked to click, share information, download software or send money. • Compromise: The attacker gains access to information, accounts or funds.
Five Ways to Protect Yourself • Pause and verify unexpected requests through a trusted second source before responding. • Be cautious when clicking links in emails and texts. • Watch for urgency and emotional pressure. • Protect your accounts with multifactor authentication (MFA) and strong passwords. • Keep devices and software updated. “Cybersecurity Awareness Month encourages all of us to be more intentional about our digital habits,” said Christian Winward, chief information security officer at PNC Bank. “Social engineering attacks are designed to influence you into acting without caution, so strengthening account security and taking a moment to verify unexpected requests can help you better protect your personal and financial information.” Simple Steps to Strengthen Your Security Because many social engineering attacks are designed to steal login credentials, MFA adds an extra layer of protection if a password is compromised. MFA can be enabled in just a few minutes on many email, financial, shopping and social media accounts. If you receive an unexpected
authentication request, pause before approving it. Take a moment to confirm the request is legitimate through a
trusted source. Legitimate organizations generally will not ask you to share authentication codes or verification details. Helping customers and communities recognize fraud and cybersecurity threats is part of PNC’s ongoing commitment to security awareness and education. For more information on best practices to help increase your awareness and preparedness, visit the Security & Privacy Center on PNC’s website. While scam tactics continue to evolve, most social engineering attacks follow the same pattern: establish trust, create urgency and encourage quick action. Recognizing those warning signs can help stop a scam before information or money is lost. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, enable MFA, review your account security settings and build the habit of verifying unexpected requests before responding.

Why You Should Consider a Rate Lock-In When Securing Your Home Loan
(StatePoint) When it comes to home loans, interest rates matter – a lot. Differences as small as one-quarter of a percentage point can save you thousands of dollars over the life of a home loan. One thing to keep in mind as you move through the mortgage process is that your interest rate isn’t guaranteed until it’s locked in. A rate lock can help you stay on budget and protect you from rising rates before closing. What is a Rate Lock and Why is it Important? A rate lock is an agreement between you and your lender. It guarantees that the interest rate you are offered won’t change for a set amount of time — even if rates go up before you close. A rate lock means you don’t have to worry about the ups and downs of the market while you wait for your loan to close. Knowing your interest rate ahead of time can also help you set a monthly budget. Without a rate lock, rising rates could push your payment higher, which could make your new home harder to afford. When Should You Consider Locking Your Rate? The right time to lock in your rate depends on the current market, how close you are to closing and how comfortable you are with risk. If rates are lower and you’re happy with your loan type and monthly payment, it may be smart to lock it in. Your lender is your best guide. They can help you decide when to lock your rate and how long to keep it locked. What You Should Know Before Locking Your Rate. Rate locks are only good for a set period. Standard locks are offered for 30, 45, 60 or 90 days. You’ll need to close your loan before the lock expires or you
might lose the rate. Some lenders may charge a small fee for rate locks, while others may include it under covered costs. Usually, a longer lock period will have a higher fee. Ask your lender if there’s a cost and whether it’s refundable. If interest rates drop after you’ve locked, you usually stay locked in at the higher rate. Some lenders may offer a “float-down” option, which lets you take advantage of a lower rate if one becomes available. Terms and availability of floatdown options vary, so ask your lender what they offer. Rate locks do offer some flexibility. If you find a more attractive rate from a different lender, you are not obligated to keep your rate lock. If you choose to work with a different lender, any rate lock fees paid should be reimbursed. Always get your rate lock agreement in writing. It should clearly state the interest rate, the type of loan, the length of the lock and any associated fees. To see how your mortgage rate can impact the amount of your monthly payments, use Freddie Mac’s Fixed-Rate Mortgage Calculator. Additional Freddie Mac resources for homebuyers can be found at https://myhome.freddiemac.com/buying. A rate lock can be a smart move, giving you more control, stability and peace of mind during what can be a stressful time. Just be sure to talk to your lender early in the process to learn your options. A little preparation can go a long way toward easing your homeownership journey.

Jerwaski Marshall: “Jawz” Takes a Bite Out of the Food Scene By Justice Reid From a Love of Food to a Growing Platform That Helps Local Businesses Get Noticed For Jerwarski “Jawz” Marshall, what began as a simple love of food has grown into an opportunity to entertain people, discover hidden food gems, and help local businesses attract new customers. A native of Rienzi, Mississippi, Marshall has turned his personality, appetite, and willingness to share his honest opinion into ItsJawzFoodReviews, an online food-reviewing platform that has gained a following throughout Mississippi, the Shoals area, and surrounding communities. “I’m really just a regular guy who turned something I enjoy into something bigger than I ever expected,” Jawz said. His journey into food reviewing wasn't something he originally planned. Jawz and his best friend started their own YouTube channel simply because they wanted to have fun. As they began creating content and eventually expanded to Facebook and TikTok, something unexpected happened—people started watching. The comments increased. People began recognizing him. Then came the messages from viewers saying they had visited restaurants because of something they saw in one of his videos. That was when Jawz realized his hobby could have a much greater purpose.
“I started noticing there are a LOT of small businesses that don’t get the attention they deserve,” he said. Today, Jawz travels around looking for restaurants, food trucks, bakeries, and those small “hidden gems” that people may pass every day without realizing what they have to offer. His goal is not simply to eat but to introduce his audience to places they may have never considered visiting. For Jawz, the food always comes first. He looks at how the food tastes, whether it is properly seasoned, how fresh it is, how well it is prepared, and whether the portion is worth the price. One of his most important questions is simple: Would I order it again? While customer service, cleanliness, presentation, and price also matter, Jawz says the taste of the food is what ultimately stands out to him. “Sometimes looks can be deceiving,” he explained. Some of his most memorable food experiences have also come from places where he least expected them. Rather than fancy restaurants, Jawz says the small mom-and-pop establishments often surprise him the most. “You walk in and you’re not expecting much, then the food comes out and you’re like, ‘Ohhhhh, okay! Y’all got something going on over here!’” he said. He remembers the burger from Inez Drive Inn as one example. He also points to Fourth Planet BBQ in the Shoals as a restaurant that exceeded his expectations and left a lasting impression.

DREAMS....from page 7 to different situations in different ways. His long-term goal is to find ways to help people receive treatments and solutions based on their individual needs. For him, education is not simply something required to remain eligible to play football. It is part of the person he wants to become. Being a student-athlete at a major university comes with its own set of challenges. He has had to learn how to manage academics, football, physical and emotional fatigue, relationships, social life, and mental health. There is very little room for wasted time. He has learned that organization and prioritization are essential. "It is necessary to find a balance of time management skills," he explained, "because it helps me to prioritize and try to keep everything organized so I don't become overwhelmed by having so much going on." That discipline has become one of the greatest lessons of his college experience. His senior year of high school provided two moments he will never forget. He was selected to participate in both the Under Armour Next All-American Football Game in Orlando, Florida, and the Polynesian Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. Being selected to participate in both prestigious games was a dream come true. He was also the first and only studentathlete from his high school program to be selected for both games during his senior year. Then came Clemson. One of his most memorable moments was realizing that all the sacrifices had finally paid off. "Who would have thought a little guy from Rienzi, MS, would be here as a starter for Clemson University?" he said. He also earned his letter during his first year at Clemson. The journey, however, has not been without adversity. He has suffered two season-ending injuries—setbacks that could have easily caused him to question whether continuing was worth it. But he refused to let the injuries define him. Rehabilitation became another chapter in his development. Instead of allowing the setbacks to become the end of his story, he used recovery as an opportunity to return bigger, stronger, and leaner. He understood that he had worked too hard to stop.
The Community News Flash
The injuries may have interrupted his journey, but they did not determine his destination. His immediate goal is clear: he hopes to play in the NFL. But he also understands that eventually his football career will end. When that day comes, he wants to use what he has learned to help and motivate others. He hopes to encourage people to set goals, believe in themselves, and pursue those goals with hard work and determination. His faith will remain a central part of that journey. He encourages others to keep the Lord first in everything they do, believing that with hard work and determination, anything can be achieved. Perhaps the most important part of his story is the message he has for young people who come from small communities and have dreams that seem bigger than their surroundings. "Keep working hard, keep showing up," he said. "You have to believe in yourself even if no one else does." He knows that young people from small towns may sometimes have to work harder to gain exposure and opportunities that are more readily available in larger communities. But he believes the extra effort is worth it. "You may have to prove yourself a little more than others that come from places that have the resources more readily available to them," he said. "But staying focused on the prize and achieving them is worth it." His message is simple: Don't let your ZIP code become your ceiling. "Just because you may be from a small town shouldn't determine your worth," he said. "Some of the best talents come from small towns; you just have to find a way to showcase yourself so others can see the talents that you have." From Rienzi, Mississippi, to the Clemson football field, his journey is a powerful reminder that big dreams don't require a big hometown. They require someone willing to believe, someone willing to work, and someone willing to keep showing up. For him, that someone was first his mother, then his family, and ultimately himself. The dream started in Rienzi. The journey continues at Clemson. And if his determination is any indication, the best chapters may still be ahead.

STEM Education is on the Rise in America’s Afterschool Programs (StatePoint) Millions of people are concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological advances will take away the jobs people need to support themselves and their families. But a new study finds that many more afterschool programs are providing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education to prepare children and youth for the workforce of the future. The study from the Afterschool Alliance, “Afterschool STEM Takes Off,” finds that 92% of parents of afterschool students now say their child’s program offers STEM learning – a significant increase from a decade ago. But access for students in rural communities and lowincome families is lagging, and more than three in four children and youth whose parents want afterschool programs for them are not enrolled at all. There has been a dramatic jump in parents reporting their children engage with STEM in their afterschool programs, from 69% in 2014, to 73% in 2020, to 92% – or 6.4 million students – today. A majority of families today (54%) report that their children engage with STEM in afterschool at least two or three times per week. But parents with low incomes report significantly less frequency than parents with higher incomes. Rural families also face barriers to accessing STEM in afterschool, with 88% of rural families reporting that STEM activities are available in their child’s afterschool program, compared to 96% of urban parents.
Rural parents also report less tech and computer science in afterschool programs than urban parents. “STEM literacy is no longer optional. It’s the foundation of nearly every aspect of our world today. We’re counting on the next generation to ensure AI and other innovations are used responsibly and in ways that improve our lives,” says Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant. “Afterschool is an optimal setting for STEM education because it creates opportunities for students to explore their interests and see how hands-on engagement with STEM can solve real-world problems outside the school day. We are thrilled with the tremendous uptick in afterschool STEM learning.” Most parents agree this is important. Three in five (61%) report satisfaction with the STEM offerings in their child’s afterschool program. Among the other findings: • There were increases in STEM in afterschool from 2014 to 2025 in every state.
• Parents of boys and girls report similar levels of access to STEM in their child’s afterschool program, but parents of girls prioritize computer science, technology and engineering less than parents of boys. • Parents prioritize STEM, and specifically computer science, more as their children age. According to advocates, the following policy recommendations will continue the progress: • Increase funding to meet the demand for afterschool and summer programs. • Ensure afterschool programs are included as partners in legislation focused on education and training in emerging STEM fields. • Increase targeted investments in computer science, technology and engineering offerings in afterschool programs. • Increase investments in afterschool programs serving rural communities. Why You Don’t Need All Day to Make the Best Smoked Ribs (StatePoint) If you’ve spent a full Saturday committed to the 3-2-1 method for ribs, you know the math: three hours of smoke, two hours wrapped, one hour to finish. But six hours is a long time to watch a smoker. Ben Palmer, the pitmaster behind Grill This Smoke That and Exmark ambassador is sharing his timesaving strategy for putting some of the best ribs you’ve ever made on the table in about three-and-ahalf hours, while even having time to stripe the lawn while they cook: Ingredients: Ribs 2 racks of pork spare ribs or St. Louis–style ribs Yellow mustard (binder) 3-4 tablespoons all-purpose barbecue rub 3-4 tablespoons honey powder rub (or sweet rub of choice) Butter Bath Pour-Over 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 2 cups apple juice 1 tablespoon all-purpose barbecue rub 1 tablespoon honey powder rub Directions: Remove the membrane. The first thing that separates good ribs from great ones isn’t what you add to them, it’s what you remove: the membrane on the bone side. This is because the membrane doesn’t
break down during cooking the way the surrounding meat does—it stays tough, fights every bite, and blocks the rub from doing its job. To remove this membrane, start at one corner, use a paper towel for grip, and pull it free, then remove remaining strips, if any. Thirty seconds of work, and the finished rib is a completely different eating experience. Apply binder. Before seasoning, add a binder. Yellow mustard works well and won’t leave any trace of mustard flavor on the finished ribs, but it gives the rub something to grip. Without it, you’ll lose seasoning every time you handle the rack. Season in layers. Start with an all-purpose barbecue base, then add something with sweetness on
top. A rub with honey powder builds color as it cooks and rounds out savory notes underneath. Apply the same process to both sides. Rest. Once the racks are seasoned, get them into the fridge. They can sit for up to 24 hours, but even one hour gives the rub time to set and you the window to fire up the smoker and dial it in. Fire the smoker. Start at 275 degrees F, boneside down on the bottom rack. That initial higher heat sets the bark faster and gets smoke working into the meat right away. After that first hour, flip the racks meat-side down, move them to the top rack, and drop the temperature to 225 degrees F. Make the pour-over. One of the best things about smoking meat is what it frees you up to do while it’s happening. After the first rotation, stripe the lawn or water the garden while the ribs do their thing. Right after that, put together the butter bath pour-over: combine half a stick of butter, 2 cups apple juice, and about a tablespoon of each of the rubs you used in a small pot. Set it in the smoker to melt and heat up. Flip again. After the second hour, flip ribs meat side up and rotate positions in the smoker for even cooking. Continue at 225 degrees F, checking periodically. Wrap. When the bones start to protrude from the meat, that’s your cue to wrap the ribs. Lay out two
sheets of heavy-duty foil. Place each rack meat-side down, pull the edges up to hold the liquid, and pour about half the butter bath over each rack. Wrap them tightly (no gaps) and get them back on the smoker. Unwrap the ribs. After 30 minutes wrapped, unwrap the ribs. If you want to sauce them, this is your window. Otherwise, brush a layer of the butter bath across the top and get them back on the smoker to cook uncovered for another 15 to 20 minutes. Then, pull a bone from the middle to check your work. A clean smoke ring and juicy meat that holds together without falling completely apart means you did it right. After that, all there’s left to do is throw them on the board and call everyone over to enjoy. For Ben Palmer’s full methodology, as well as inspiration for how to care for your lawn while your ribs are cooking, visit Exmark’s Backyard Life site, a unique multimedia destination with a focus on helping homeowners make meaningful improvements to their outdoor living experience. The 3-2-1 method takes six hours and has the potential to produce ribs that fall apart too easily. You can shave off hours of preparation time and achieve that bite that competition-style ribs are known for.

Survey Finds Storm-Ready Americans Are Missing Key Step in Repair Prep
(StatePoint) Most homeowners feel reasonably ready for storms this time of year. In a new national survey, the T-Rex Tape Storm Readiness Report, more than half (63%) confidently rate their home’s preparedness for storms a 7 out of 10 or higher. While Americans are close to stormready, the research suggests the real test comes after severe weather strikes. “We wanted to look past the checklist people already know and understand readiness once storm damage actually happens,” Kerry Haugh, director of Product Marketing for T-Rex Brand, says. “Forty-eight percent have tested batteries for emergency devices and 45% trimmed trees around their home. Preparing and protecting homes is top of mind. What we found though is there’s a gap between preparedness and readiness.” The Missing Repair Step Eight in 10 Americans have experienced unexpected home damage that required a repair, and nearly half (43%) say it’s happening more often compared to five years ago, citing aging homes and severe weather as the top reasons. Yet only 30% say they have organized their repair tools as part of their storm preparation, and just 51% say emergency storm supplies would be easy to find. The Fix-It-Fast Instinct Most feel confident tackling storm-related repairs themselves: 58% are comfortable sealing a small leak to keep water out, and 46% are comfortable securing a broken win-
dow or door. There’s also an instinct to respond quickly: More than half fix storm damage within 24 hours of noticing it. On the other hand, a third say damage has grown larger or more expensive at some point simply because they waited too long to address it. When asked what delays a repair, cost and the need to hire a professional rank highest, but 24% point to not having the right supplies and 20% cite not having the right tools. Reaching for the Wrong Tool Fifty-nine percent of Americans are aware that, unlike traditional duct tape, repair tape is designed for heavy-duty repairs, like patching, sealing and waterproofing. They also have specific standards for what it should do: 59% expect repair tape to keep water out, and 56% expect it to hold through the rain. What’s surprising is that while duct tape is stocked in 69% of emergency storm kits, waterproof repair tape, built for extreme weather conditions, is included in only 37%. When storm damage strikes, 75% of Americans have used duct tape because it was the only tool available and 63% reached for it during stormrelated repairs, more than any other option they had handy. A Tape Made for the Moment This repair gap is the idea behind T-Rex Brand’s evolution of tape: Unexpected repairs are on the rise, so the tape built to handle them had to change. T-Rex Ferociously Strong Waterproof and Repair Tape is a versatile, fix-all for any environment. Its Flex-to-Fit Technology and a solventless UV acrylic adhesive grip wet, rough surfaces, like concrete, metal and wood, seal out water, air and moisture, and even work under water. The tape has a strong hold in extreme temperatures until a permanent repair is possible. For more information about T-Rex Tape, visit https://www.trextape.com/why-t-rex.

Here Are 5 Things to Do to Lower Your Healthcare Costs
(c) AnnaStills / iStock via Getty Images Plus
(StatePoint) Healthcare is expensive. Families feel it every time they pay an insurance premium, pick up a prescription, open a medical bill, or put off care because of worries about the cost. For many people, it’s getting even harder. Changes to Medicaid, healthcare tax credits, and new program rules will make it more difficult for some families to keep their insurance or afford care. Advocates say that people should not have to fight this hard to see a doctor or pay for medicine and that healthcare should be about helping people live healthy lives, not about confusing bills, paperwork, high costs, and record profits. Big changes are needed to make healthcare more affordable. But there are practical steps you can take now to help avoid extra costs. 1. Use what you’ve got. If you have health insurance, federal law says most health plans must cover preventive care at no cost to you. This includes annual check-ups, vaccines, blood pressure checks, cancer screenings, and other basic care to keep you healthy. These visits matter. Detecting a health problem early can help you avoid a bigger, more expensive problem later. When you schedule your next doctor’s appointment, ask two simple questions: “Is this preventive care?” and “Will I have to pay anything for this visit?” Researching this ahead of time can help you avoid a surprise bill. 2. Shop around. Not every doctor, hospital, or pharmacy costs the same. Your insurance
15
plan usually has a list of “in-network” doctors and facilities where care costs less. Before you make an appointment, check whether the doctor or clinic is in your network. If you go out of network, you could pay much more. If you don’t have insurance, many communities support occasional access to free health screenings and care. Also ask where a medical test or procedure will cost the least. Sometimes the same scan, blood test, or treatment costs more at a hospital than at a clinic, imaging center, or outpatient office. A call to your health insurance plan may save you big bucks. 3. Ask for help. Don’t ignore bills you cannot afford. Call the billing office and ask for help. You can ask: “Do you offer financial assistance?” “Do you have charity care?” “Can I get a payment plan?” “Can this bill be lowered?” Many hospitals and clinics have programs that can reduce bills for people who qualify. You can also ask them to check for mistakes. Medical bills are confusing, and errors happen. 4. Take care of your health. No one can control everything about their health, and many people face barriers that make it harder to stay healthy. But small steps can help prevent bigger health problems and bigger bills. If you are able, take your medicine as directed. Keep up with care for conditions like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, or heart disease. Try to move your body, eat nourishing foods, and get help when something feels wrong. 5. Speak up and take action. One person cannot fix America’s healthcare affordability crisis alone. One Nation, Overcharged is a grassroots movement that is bringing people together to demand better. That means speaking up, sharing your story, and calling for a system that puts people over profits. The grassroots effort is powered by voices like yours. Whether you have thousands of dollars in medical debt, are fed up with high healthcare costs, or simply believe that we all deserve better, you can visit OneNationOvercharged.org to learn more, sign up, and add your voice. Medical costs are on the rise, but people can take steps to reduce their own bills, as well as join efforts to change the status quo.
How to Create a Business Succession Plan: A Guide to Getting Started
(c) designer491 / iStock via Getty Images Plus
(StatePoint) For many business owners, succession planning is often pushed aside by dayto-day demands. But having a clear plan for what happens to your business once you’re ready to step back is one of the most important ways to protect what you’ve built. PNC’s Business Owner Wealth Insights Report shows that nearly 70% of owners agree planning for the future is important, but 1 in 3 have not yet formalized their succession plan. One of the biggest barriers: its perceived complexity. Start With Alignment, Not Mechanics The most effective succession plans start with clarity on outcomes – not mechanics. Start by clarifying your priorities, including financial goals, business direction, and stakeholder expectations. This alignment will guide key decisions, from choosing a successor to structuring the transition. Jim Benedict, head of Business Owner Solutions, PNC Private Bank, said: “We tell clients to ‘begin with the end in mind.’ How would they like their family wealth and business to be structured? What do they want to accomplish? What’s important to them? Once we know the answers to those questions, we can look at succession methods and wealth structures.” Identify and Develop Future Leadership The next step is determining who could eventually lead the business. Potential successors may include family members, partners, employees or outside buy-
ers. Each option brings distinct considerations, including whether the successor has the skills to lead, how the transfer will be structured, and what level of involvement the current owner will retain. Create a Transition Timeline A phased transition over several years allows for: • deliberate leadership development and mentoring; • gradual transfer of responsibilities and relationships; • reduced operational disruption; and • greater flexibility in structuring ownership transfer. Get a Realistic Business Valuation A professional valuation provides a clearer picture of financial health and helps guide retirement, tax, and other transition decisions. It also gives an owner a reliable value to incorporate into personal financial planning and a framework to evaluate whether unsolicited offers are credible and worth pursuing. Communicate the Plan One of the most overlooked aspects of succession planning is communication. Businesses successfully navigating succession tend to focus on three areas: • Clarity: defining roles, expectations, and the future leadership structure. • Alignment: ensuring key stakeholders share a common understanding of direction. • Consistency: establishing regular opportunities to revisit and refine the plan. Review and Update Regularly Review your plan regularly, especially after major business changes, leadership shifts, or personal life events. Keeping the plan current helps ensure it stays aligned with your goals and your company’s needs. Steps You Can Take Today • Document your top two or three succession goals; • Identify at least one potential successor; and • Schedule a conversation with a trusted financial or legal advisor. Creating a succession plan may feel like a future concern, but planning ahead can help protect your business, support your employees, and make the next chapter smoother for everyone involved.

5 Ways Everyday Americans Can Welcome Military Families Home This Fall
(StatePoint) Most Americans move every five to seven years, and that’s enough to turn your whole world upside down. Imagine doing that every two years—a new town, new school, new sports team, new doctor—and multiply that by 600,000 families. That’s normal life for a military family, and many of their neighbors don’t realize it’s happening right next door. Every summer, the biggest “PCS” (or Permanent Change of Station) moving season quietly comes and goes. Blue Star Welcome Week (BSWW), running Sept. 26-Oct. 4, is a nationwide activation that brings communities together to help military families feel at home the moment they arrive. The good news is that it’s easy for anyone to get involved, and it makes a difference in the lives of military families. Here are five simple ways to be that welcoming neighbor, no matter where you live. 1. Attend a BSWW event near you or plan one of your own. Communities across the country host events designed to bring military and everyday Americans together. Find one near you to join, or create your own block party or event. 2. Deliver a welcome note or help restock a family’s pantry. A new family on the block doesn’t know where to find a good doctor, a trustworthy babysitter, or the best pizza place yet. Share a welcome note with your go-to favorite spots, or deliver a warm meal during move-in week. You can also build a welcome basket stocked with pantry essentials that families usually have to toss out every time they move.
3. Make a military child feel like less of the “new kid.” Military children repeatedly navigate new schools, activities and friendships. A classmate’s invitation to sit together at lunch or a coach’s welcome at practice can make all the difference for a kid starting over (once again). 4. Ask your employer to get involved. Businesses, schools and community organizations all have a role to play. Encourage your workplace to host a Welcome Week volunteer day or donation drive for relocating military families. 5. Spread the word about Welcome Week. Only 39% of military families feel a true sense of belonging in their community, meaning for most families, every move means starting over, without a local network. The more everyday Americans who know about BSWW, the more families feel supported when they arrive. “Supporting military families should be easy, meaningful and even fun. That’s the idea behind Blue Star Welcome Week,” says Kathy RothDouquet, CEO of Blue Star Families. “You don’t have to do something big to be a good neighbor. Just show up, lend a hand, make a connection and find a way to ‘Do Your Part.’” This fall, you can support military families in your community with Blue Star Families during Welcome Week. To learn more, and to discover more ways to make a difference, visit bluestarwelcomeweek.org. Whether it’s an official event or your own small gesture, this fall presents an opportunity to show up for military families in America.
