The roots of the fear of abandonment can often be traced back to our earliest experiences in life.

Our relationships with caregivers during infancy and childhood lay the foundation for how we perceive and approach relationships later in life. If these early bonds were secure and loving, we are more likely to develop a sense of

The fear of abandonment is a common human experience, and knowing that others have faced and overcome it can be reassuring. Seek support from friends, family, or a therapist who can provide guidance and empathy as you work through your feelings.

One powerful way to overcome the fear of abandonment is by cultivating self-love and selfworth. Often, we fear people leaving us because we are afraid they will discover that we are unworthy of love and belonging.

Building a strong sense of selfesteem can counteract these negative beliefs. Practice self-compassion, learn to appreciate your unique qualities, and remind yourself that you are deserving of love and connection.

Another crucial step is to work on improving your communication skills. Often, fear of abandonment can lead to unhealthy communication patterns, such as bottling up emotions or lashing out in anger. Learning to express your needs and emotions in a

healthy and assertive manner can strengthen your relationships and reduce the chances of misunderstandings that may trigger abandonment fears.

Does Your Student Need Internet Access? Here’s What to Know (StatePoint) With students back in the classroom, providing the resources they need to be successful is top of mind for parents and educators.

Yet for the millions of students limited by lack of internet access, their education hangs in the balance.

Today, one in five U.S. households lack this essential resource, highlighting equity disparities for students across the country.

T-Mobile’s Project 10Million, a $10.7 billion nationwide initiative aimed at helping to close the digital divide in education, is offering free internet connectivity and mobile hotspots to up to 10 million eligible K-12 student households.

her sophomore year. She graduated from high school in June with honors and an Associates of Arts degree in cybersecurity, thanks to

having internet connectivity that allowed her to also tackle college courses through a local running start program.

She credits her success, and the fact she’s now starting a bachelor’s program this fall, to her hard work and dedication and to Project 10Million.

“Having me, my parents and my three siblings all doing our work at the same time, watching videos and online lessons, doing Zoom calls — our internet slowed down to the point where I couldn’t really use it for school,” says Almazan.

“Once I got the T-Mobile hotspot and service, I didn’t struggle as much, and it made doing my classwork so much easier. I don’t think I could have been able to get through high school without the hotspot.”

Today, internet connectivity is a basic need for remote and hybrid learning,

allowing students to effectively complete homework assignments, research, collaborate with peers and communicate with teachers.

Fortunately, T-Mobile’s Project 10Million is an ongoing initiative that is offering hotspots and internet connectivity to eligible students.

Almazan encourages families struggling with internet connectivity to look into Project 10Million.

Flu Shot Update In previous years certain groups were advised to get a flu shot: those who are age 50 and above, have a chronic condition, are a caretaker for someone who’s ill and so on. Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising that everyone age 6 months and older get a shot.

Not only that, but the vaccine against the big-name flu from last year, H1N1 (also called “swine flu”), is now included in the regular flu shots.

Does your doctor think you should have a flu shot this year? Now is the time to ask. Chances are the doctor’s office will even have you come in for your shot. Be sure to ask about the increased strength “Fluzone HighDose” vaccine for seniors above age 65 year and whether you should have that one instead of a regular shot.

There are also a number of other places to get a flu shot.

Be sure to call in advance, because not all locations will have vaccine at all times.

Whether or not you get a flu shot, this is the time to stock up on hand sanitizer and sanitizer wipes. Take a small package of sanitizer wipes with you to the grocery store to wipe down the handle of your cart.

Is a Daily Vitamin Really Necessary?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My adult daughter is unable to take vitamins without upsetting her stomach. She has taken them with and without food, and at different times of the day, to no avail. She takes no medicine except for thyroid. She has no gastrointestinal problems. — V.H. ANSWER: Has your daughter tried different brands of vitamins? The filler in some brands might be the cause of her stomach upset. Fillers are inactive ingredients that keep the tablet together.

The question really is: Does your daughter, or anyone, need to take a vitamin (multivitamin or otherwise) daily? Vitamins are nutrients that the body doesn’t make for itself (except vitamin D). They’re needed in extremely small amounts. The era of beriberi, scurvy and rickets is all but over since the discovery of vitamins.

Most doctors have never seen a case of those vitamin deficiency illnesses.

Vitamins don’t pep us up and they don’t prevent heart disease or cancer as was once thought. In excess, they can be troublemakers. In spite of this, we’re conditioned to believe that we need a daily multivitamin. Half of the adult American population swallows one every day.

We can meet all vitamin needs through foods, with the possible exception of vitamin D. A diet that supplies fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and some meat provides the necessary vitamins. Meat is the source for vitamin B-12, but vegetarians can get that vitamin in other ways. Vitamin D is a problem for many. Sunshine converts a substance

people don’t get enough sunshine exposure to achieve skin production of D, and people in northern climates can’t get enough during winter months. All it takes is 15 minutes of sun exposure on the face, arms and legs three times a week. Age is another possible factor in failing to meet vitamin demands if older people subside on a marginal diet of tea and toast. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had a foot reconstruction operation some months ago. The foot doctor said I had to be off Celebrex until the foot completely healed. I had been on it for several years. I have osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Since being off Celebrex for four months, I don’t have any more pain or stiffness than I did while I was taking it.

Do I really need it? — V.M. ANSWER: If a medicine isn’t doing anything for you, why take it? You’ve taken Celebrex for several years and now you’ve been off it for four months with no worsening of your symptoms.

I’d say you made a strong case for not continuing it. Many, many other rheumatoid arthritis medicines are on the market. It’s time for a change, or perhaps for a medicine rest if your doctor agrees. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: When patients are admitted to a hospital by ambulance and their prescriptions are given to the hospital staff, are they returned to the patients upon discharge? These are expensive medicines. — E.M. ANSWER: The medicines ought to be given back to the patients upon discharge. If they aren’t, an inquiry should be made. Listening and learning is one way to honor others' lived experiences and get a fuller scope of an issue.

Young people can commit to thoroughly researching causes they care about, talking to those working toward solutions and holding space for those impacted. Adults can connect with the young people in their lives, inviting dialogue that allows for sharing different perspectives and finding common ground.

These are the driving ideas behind the work of high schooler Kristie To, who became a leading force in Asian American racial justice when she founded Hearts Against Hate. Among the initiatives of her nonprofit is distributing Asian history and Asian American Pacific Islander civil rights curriculum to children.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Department of Health notes women with the highest risk include AfricanAmerican women, who are more likely to die from breast cancer as their tumors are often found later in life, when treatment is less effective.

Women over the age of 50 are also at a higher risk.

Those with female relatives who have had breast cancer, such as a mother, daughter or sister, are at a greater risk for getting breast cancer. Being overweight after menopause is another risk factor for breast cancer.

It is recommended that women who are age 40 or older receive bi-annual breast screenings. Breast cancer can develop without early signs.

By Sabrina Bates It is estimated that more than 2,000 women in Mississippi will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Between 20152019, breast cancer had the highest incidence rates in women across the state.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), more than one quarter of women in Mississippi do not receive life-saving screening. The state has one of the lowest breast screening cancer rates of older women in the nation. But … It isn't all bad news for Mississippi women.

Thanks to partnerships between medical facilities across the state and MSDH, women who are uninsured are likely eligible for lowcost or free mammograms and breast cancer screenings. The services are available through federal and matching funds that allow for mammography screening through contracted providers to uninsured women between 50 and 64 years of age. Women 40 to 49 are eligible for screening mammograms when special funding is available.

Those who qualify for the program include uninsured, underinsured, medically underserved and minority women, and whose household income is at or below 250 percent of federal poverty level. For example, a household of three is eligible if their

following symptoms are encouraged to let their health care provider know as soon as possible: • New lump in the breast or under the arm.

• Thickening or swelling of part of the breast, or any change in size or shape.

• Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.

• Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.

• Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.

• Pain in any area of the breast.

Maintaining a healthy weight, an active lifestyle, a healthy diet and quitting smoking can help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Many speculated about the possibility of his car being tampered with that day, but nothing ever developed from any type of investigation.

Many will recognize Buford's story from the semi autobiographical movie, "Walking Tall." A sequel was reportedly in the works before his death.

Addie Sanders will perform from 12-1 p.m. and the Ramer Baptist Trio will take the mic from 1-1:45 p.m.

Line-up for the parade begins at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church and ends at Selmer City Park. Visitors to the evening events are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs for more live music at Selmer City Park. Sulphur Thyme performs from 4-5 p.m. Chelsea Rhodes performs from 5-6 p.m. ELVIS (performer Jack Curtis) will take the stage from 6-7 p.m. The Dawg Creek Band will finish out the evening's entertainment from 7-8 p.m. Organizers of the day's events promise crafts, music, food and history.

Community members near and far are welcome and invited to help McNairy County celebrates its 200-year history in Tennessee.

Sweet Potatoes Are Welcome at Any Meal

We're advised by medical experts to eat more fruits and vegetables daily to promote good health. Among their recommendations are to eat cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables several times a week to help reduce the risk of certain cancers such as colon and rectal cancer. Kohlrabi is a relatively unknown cruciferous vegetable.

Cruciferous vegetables -- other than cabbage -- include broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts and beet and mustard greens.

Kohlrabi is a simple, nutritious way to incorporate more cruciferous vegetables into your diet. The leaves of a young kohlrabi can be used in the same way as kale. One cup of raw

kohlrabi has only 40 calories and is high in vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Kohlrabi helps to stabilize blood sugar and is helpful for those with hypoglycemia and diabetes. It also can be effective against edema, candida and viral conditions.

Here's some tips for selecting and preparing kohlrabi: Kohlrabi is available yearround. Of kohlrabi's two varieties, the purple globe is sweeter and tastier than the apple-green.

Both have a pale green, almost ivory-colored flesh inside.

While the entire vegetable is edible raw or cooked, the small, young kohlrabi, about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches in diameter, is ideal for its flavor and texture.

The giant size is woody, and has a fibrous texture and inedible outer layer. The larger kohlrabi globes definitely need to be peeled before eating.

Remove the stems by pulling

or cutting them off the kohlrabi globe. The leaves can be chopped and cooked along with the bulb, or used as part of a tossed salad. The leaves have a mild flavor and take well to salad dressing.

Store kohlrabi in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper. It may maintain good quality for about one week.

Although kohlrabi stores well, yellow leaves indicate that the vegetable is not fresh.

You can use kohlrabi in variety of ways, including sliced or cut into julienne strips and eaten raw; grated, diced, fried or roasted like potatoes; steamed, stir-fried like water chestnuts or bamboo shoots, or grilled. Now that this supermarket mystery has been solved, give kohlrabi a try!

CRISPY KOLARABI CAKES 4 Kohlrabi bulbs (approxi-

mately 1 1/2 pounds) 2 teaspoons sea salt Kohlrabi leaves from bulbs, (if available) washed and finely chopped 3 green onions, roots removed, and green tops and white parts chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs 1/2 teaspoon grated or ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon cayenne or dried red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1. Peel (large bulbs) and shred kohlrabi using a box or cheese grater. Sprinkle the kohlrabi with the salt and place it in colander to drain for 30 minutes. Squeeze out any excess moisture by rolling the shredded kohlrabi in a paper towel and wringing it out.

2. Combine the kohlrabi with the kohlrabi leaves, the green onions, eggs, breadcrumbs, ginger, cayenne or red pepper flakes, and the pepper.

Blend well.

3. Heat the oil in large skillet over medium high heat. Form patties by placing two heaping tablespoons of the mixture in the oil and pressing it flat with a spatula. Fry until patties are golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt.

Serve with applesauce, or a dollop of low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt mixed with chopped mint as a sauce.

Freddie Mac offers the following preparation tips for homeowners: Protect Your Investment A home insurance policy is an important layer of protection, generally providing you with the funds needed to repair a damaged property to its condition prior to an incident.

Here, coverage can vary greatly depending on the company and plan you choose. To avoid surprises, it’s important to review your policy carefully and make sure you understand what is and is not covered. For example, flooding is not generally covered by homeowner’s insurance, so if you live in an area at risk of flooding, consider a separate flood insurance policy. Working with your insurance agent or broker can help you determine the types of plans and coverage that make sense for your budget, property and possessions.

Keep in mind that after a disaster strikes, you will need to list your possessions and verify any losses for an insurance claim.

Taking a home inventory beforehand will make the process much easier.

Establish a Saving Strategy Create an emergency fund with a goal of saving enough money for three to six months of regular expenses. It’s best to keep your emergency fund separate from your regular savings account unless there’s an extreme need. While this can be challenging for any family, households that have emergency budgets in place tend to be better prepared to face disaster. Any resources you can put away will help you be more resilient if the time comes.

Secure Your Home

Regular home maintenance can help protect against the dangers of natural disasters, such as flooding and hurricane-force winds.

Cleaning gutters and drains, for example, can prevent water from collecting around your home. You should also be sure you have a sump pump in good working order, and that your foundation and roof are in good condition. If a storm is in the forecast, clear your lawn of items that may be damaged, destroyed, lost, or cause damage to your home. You should also cover windows and shut off utilities. Many of these precautions can also protect against tornadoes, which can develop quickly and often arrive without warning.

Make Safety Upgrades Before buying a particular house, you may want to consider the area’s history of natural disasters, and take stock of the home to ensure it’s up to code and has the safety features needed to protect you and your family.

Whether you’re a current or prospective homebuyer, you can reference information provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (known as FEMA) to help you assess which hazards could impact your home, and identify relevant safety upgrades that can strengthen its defenses. For example, earthquake damage may be mitigated by installing flexible gas line connections to prevent leaks and fires and by securing exterior structures like decks, porches, garages and carports. Homes at risk of storm surge could benefit from reinforced garage doors that can withstand water and high winds, storm shutters, high-impact glass windows, and flood-resistant insulation and flooring.

Depending on the scope of renovations, you may consider taking out a loan to cover the costs. There are a variety of refinance products available that allow you to leverage your home’s value to fund renovations. Talk to your lender to find the right financing option for you.
