In this special Mother’s Day feature, The Community News Flash honors one such woman, Patricia Morrison, whose life has been rooted in faith, family, and unwavering devotion to God. Patricia Morrison’s journey with Christ began at an early age on a Thursday night during a revival at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Kossuth, Mississippi. She recalls the sacred tradition of the mourners’ bench, where children seeking salvation would kneel as the mothers of the church gathered around them in prayer. That moment not only marked the beginning of her relationship with God but also planted the seeds for the woman of faith she would become.

As a mother, Patricia leaned heavily on her faith, especially during the early years. “Being a new mother, I had to believe that God was with me,” she shared. Over time, that belief grew into an unshakable foundation. Today, she confidently declares that she can do nothing without God. Standing firmly on the 27th Psalm, she finds strength in knowing that the Lord is her light and salvation—her protector in every season of life.

To Patricia, motherhood is defined by unconditional love, guidance, and support. Her proudest moments come from watching her children and grandchildren grow and accept Christ. While her journey wasn’t without challenges— times of exhaustion and financial strain—her faith carried her through. During difficult times, she turns to prayer and the Word, finding strength and encouragement in both.

Patricia’s influence extends far beyond her biological children. To her, being a mother means showing love and care to all children, whether related or not. This mindset reflects the example set by her own mother, who raised fourteen children with unwavering love and compassion, teaching them to love God and serve others.

As Patricia Morrison reflects on her life, her greatest joy comes from her relationship with God and the love of her family. Her desired legacy is clear—to be remembered as someone who loved God and people, a dependable presence in the lives of those around her.

It’s Mother’s Day, and like many of you, I find myself reflecting on the countless roles a mother plays. She is a nurturer, a provider, a protector, a teacher, a counselor, and sometimes even a referee. From the moment her children enter this world, a mother begins a lifelong journey of pouring into their lives—guiding, correcting, encouraging, and loving them through every season.

But among all the responsibilities a mother carries, one of the greatest—and perhaps most challenging—is the task of getting her children to listen.

Now, on the surface, that might sound simple. After all, how hard can it be to listen? But anyone who has ever tried to guide a child—or even an adult— knows that listening is not as easy as it seems. Hearing and listening are two very different things.

Hearing is automatic; listening is intentional. Hearing is passive; listening is active. And in today’s world, where distractions are

everywhere and attention spans are short, true listening has become something of a lost art.

We send our children to school to learn how to read, write, and speak effectively. We celebrate those who can articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently.

But rarely do we place the same emphasis on teaching the skill of listening. Yet, listening is just as important—if not more so—than speaking.

I was reminded of this the other day while having a conversation with someone. I was offering what I believed to be sound advice—words meant to help, to guide, and to possibly prevent unnecessary trouble. But as I spoke, it became clear that although the person could hear me, they weren’t really listening.

Their mind was elsewhere, their attention divided, and their response disconnected from what was being said.

In that moment, something dawned on me.

The One who designed the human body knew exactly what He was doing. Think about it— we were given two eyes, two ears, two lungs, two kidneys, two arms, and two legs, but only one mouth. That design is not by accident. It speaks volumes without saying a word. It suggests that we should observe more, listen more, and speak less.

Imagine how different our lives would be if we truly embraced that principle.

Children would avoid many pitfalls if they took the time to listen to the wisdom of their parents. Young adults would make better decisions if they slowed down long enough to hear the voices of experience around them. Even as adults, we would strengthen our relationships if we listened—not just to respond, but to understand.

For mothers, the desire for their children to listen is not about control—it’s about care.

Every instruction, every warning, every piece of advice is rooted in love. A mother sees what a child cannot yet see. She understands consequences that a child may not yet comprehend. And more often than not, her words are meant to shield her children from harm and steer them toward success.

So today, as we celebrate mothers, I offer a simple but powerful piece of advice to children of all ages: learn to listen more and speak less.

Listening can keep you out of trouble. Listening can open doors of wisdom. Listening can strengthen your relationships and

help you grow into the person you are meant to be. And perhaps most importantly, listening is one of the greatest ways to show respect and appreciation to the one who has given you so much.

Flowers are beautiful. Cards are thoughtful. Gifts are appreciated. But an obedient and attentive child—that is a gift that continues to give long after Mother’s Day has passed.

So today, and every day, let’s make a conscious effort to “listen up.”

Because sometimes, the greatest lessons in life are not found in what we say but in what we are willing to hear.

For more than eight decades, Mrs. Zannie Elkins has remained a faithful member of her church, a testament to her enduring devotion.

Her spiritual journey began with a simple yet powerful decision to give her life to Christ— one that would shape every aspect of her life moving forward. That decision not only strengthened her walk with God but also guided her role as a mother and educator.

“My faith gave me confidence to teach for 31 years,” Mrs. Elkins shared, reflecting on a career that extended far beyond the classroom. How Business Owners Balance Business and Personal Finance

(StatePoint) For successful business owners, managing wealth extends far beyond balance sheets — it requires carefully orchestrating growth, balancing business and personal financial priorities, and thoughtfully considering business succession planning and legacy.

PNC’s “Business Owner Wealth Insights Report” is the product of a partnership with leading market research firm, Ipsos, on a nationwide survey of business owners.

Its findings center on four themes: connectivity between business and private banking, balancing business and personal growth, family dynamics and governance, and philanthropy and legacy.

“As business owners juggle growth, personal financial priorities, succession planning and legacy, the need for a truly integrated approach has never been clearer,” said Don Heberle, head of PNC Private Bank. “This report shines a light on how prepared business owners are for navigating the complex intersections of business and personal wealth and the keys for unlocking stronger outcomes

for families, businesses and communities.”

Connectivity Between Business and Private Banking For most business owners surveyed (67%), business and personal finances are managed separately. Respondents believe there are potential risks associated with combining business and personal finances, with 83% saying that separating the two reduces the potential for conflicts of interest. Still, 89% say they are interested in receiving advice that considers both their business and personal needs, and 88% of respondents say they value having a dedicated advisor who understands both.

Business and personal goals are reviewed at similar intervals, with the majority saying they revisit their business goals (80%) and personal finance goals (75%) at least quarterly.

The Balance Between Business and Personal Growth There is importance among business owners in finding the right balance between growing the business and achieving personal

financial goals.

Most owners (91%) agree that achieving both personal and professional growth is equally important, but that success does not come without barriers, which include: • Personal time and resources (53%) • Financial constraints or market conditions (44%) • Choosing between business reinvestment and personal use of the business’ profits (35%) Family Dynamics and Business Governance Most survey respondents (92%) agreed that it is important to have a formal governance structure for their business. Separately, 84% said succession and exit planning is critical to the continuity of their business. Yet, only 63% said they have a formal exit or succession plan.

Among those without a formal plan, top barriers identified include lack of a clear successor (25%), family conflict in succession (15%), and lack of time (19%).

Philanthropy and Legacy Philanthropy plays a meaningful role in legacy planning. Two-thirds of respondents view philanthropy as part of their legacy, and 81% structure investment strategies to support charitable goals. Nearly 80% donate financially, and many involve family members — either actively (43%) or in future plans (26%).

“Today’s business owners are shaping legacy across generations,” Heberle said.

“When business and personal strategies are aligned, they are better positioned to create lasting impact.”

How to Live to Be 100 Years Old (StatePoint) Living to 100 may sound extraordinary, but research suggests it’s more achievable—and enjoyable—than many people think. Studies show the majority of centenarians rate their health as good, and large numbers of people in this age group are mobile, active and optimistic.

According to the American Medical Association, adopting these seven habits can improve longevity and quality of life: 1. Eat healthy. Think of food as medicine.

Choose nutritious, whole foods. Eat more fruits that are dark in color — blue, purple and red — to get the most nutrients, as well as fiber-rich vegetables, especially nonstarchy vegetables such as broccoli, carrots and leafy greens. Incorporate whole grains, nuts, seeds, lean meats and fish. Drink more water, or as an alternative, flavored or sparkling water with no added sugar.

Reduce your intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and unhealthy ultra-processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juices, is associated with a higher mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Eat fewer processed meats, which tend to be high in fat and heavy on added salt and preservatives.

Limit your intake of refined grains, such as breads, crackers, baked goods and white rice.

Drink less alcohol.

2. Exercise. Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity weekly. A recent study published in JAMA found that putting down the television remote and walking can improve healthy aging — highlighting the importance of small everyday habits.

3. Get enough sleep. Adequate sleep improves memory, reduces stress, improves mood, and primes the body’s natural defenses against disease. But sleep quality decreases with age. Improve your sleep quality by setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time, insulating your bedroom against noise, avoiding exercise within an hour of bedtime, maintaining a cool and dark bedroom, and limiting fluids within two hours of bedtime.

Also avoid alcohol before bedtime and make your bedroom a tech-free zone as screentime can impact your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep.

4. Live with purpose. A sense of purpose can lead to increased energy, motivation, emotional stability and resilience. Take time for self-reflection and try meditation or yoga.

them into action toward a goal that’s meaningful to you and benefits others.

5. Stay positive. To bust stress, take a break from decisions, connect with others, pet your dog or cat, write a to-do list (stick to three items), take time to recharge, laugh, sing, curb clutter, set boundaries, perform mindfulness exercises, practice gratitude, and seek help from a professional when stress becomes overwhelming.

6. Stay connected. Research shows that having social connections is a significant predictor of longevity and better physical, cognitive and mental health, while social isolation and loneliness are significant predictors of premature death and poor health.

Combat loneliness with social clubs and community groups, or by taking up a hobby, learning something new or volunteering. Schedule preventive care, tests and health screenings to help your doctor spot certain conditions before they become more serious. Your doctor can recommend needed tests based on your age, gender and health conditions — including colonoscopies, mammograms, gynecological and prostate exams, and vision screenings.

“Wherever the need is, we meet it to the best of our ability,” Payne said. “And one thing we’ve learned— you cannot out-give God.” Like many great endeavors, the journey was not without challenges. Payne recalls

times in the early days when she would show up for meetings and no one else would come. Instead of giving up, she used those moments to pray and trust God. Her consistency and faithfulness paid off. “God told me it was in its baby stages. I nurtured it with prayer, and one day it would stand on its own,” she said. Today, nearly 30 years later, the ministry is still standing strong.

Empowering women

remains at the heart of the organization. Payne teaches that a woman’s full potential is rooted in living according to God’s Word. Success, she emphasizes, is not measured by titles or achievements but by a woman’s commitment to grow spiritually and live with integrity daily. Debra Luster: A Life of Faith, Motherhood, and Lasting Legacy

By Justice Reid In a world where the role of a mother is often tested by life’s unexpected challenges, Debra Luster stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, strength, and love. Her journey is not just a story of raising children but a testimony of trusting God through every season—leaning on faith when the road was uncertain and celebrating His goodness in every victory. From the moment she gave her life to Christ to the legacy she continues to build today, Debra’s life reflects what it truly means to walk by faith and not by sight.

Debra’s spiritual journey began on May 30, 1971, when she was baptized at Berea Church of Christ in Guys, Tennessee. That decision became the foundation for everything that followed. As a mother of four, she quickly realized that faith wasn’t optional—it was essential. Through the ups and downs of raising her children, especially facing the challenges of caring for a child with severe allergies and recurring illness, Debra leaned heavily on God. Time after time, when circumstances seemed overwhelming, she prayed—and God made a way.

Her favorite scripture, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), became more than just words; it became her daily encouragement. It reminded her that even when she felt incapable, God’s strength would carry her through.

Motherhood, to Debra, is one of God’s greatest blessings.

She cherishes her four children, eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Among her proudest moments are seeing her children graduate high school—but even more meaningful was witnessing each of them give their lives to Christ. For Debra, success wasn’t just measured in accomplishments but in spiritual growth.

Her life in the church spans over 55 years of faithful service.

Whether serving as First Lady for nearly three decades or working quietly behind the scenes, Debra embraced every role with humility and purpose. She believes that true service is not about recognition but about being an example of Christ in action.

Through it all, Debra has learned that motherhood is not easy— especially when striving to do it God’s way. It requires patience, sacrifice, and constant reliance on Him. She encourages young mothers to raise their children with love and guidance, reminding them of the importance of laying a strong spiritual foundation.

Everything You Need to Know About Generic Medicines (StatePoint) At a time when many basic living expenses are rising, generic medicines play a critical role in expanding access to safe, effective and affordable treatments, helping patients avoid difficult tradeoffs between their health and other basic needs.

Asparagus Is Perfect for Spring Recipes Nothing says spring is here like a beautiful bunch of crisp asparagus. While asparagus is available year-round, it's much better when purchased locally.

Asparagus is easy to select and prepare, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors including green, violet, purple and white. It also grows wild and is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. The stalks range in size from colossal to small. Various types and colors of asparagus can be used without any noticeable difference in the taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest.

Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors

and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness.

The stalks should not be limp or dry at the cut and of uniform thickness.

If you're planning to use the asparagus on the same day, rinse it under cool water and pat the stalks dry with a paper towel.

Smaller stalks can be broken or

cut at the point where the stem naturally snaps. Peeling the end of thicker stalks with a paring knife or a vegetable peeler removes any woody stems and can be done up to 2 hours before cooking. Place the prepared asparagus in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to stay crisp until ready to cook.

Season the chicken pieces with the salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. Place the chicken, skin-side down, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Turn the pieces skinside up, and cook until golden brown and done, about 5 minutes.

Stir in the garlic and red bell pepper. Add the asparagus and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the zest and the chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 3 minutes. Serve immediately over hot rice.

(StatePoint) Americans overwhelmingly say brain health matters deeply as they age, ranking it on par with — or even above — physical health. Yet despite this concern, most adults acknowledge they do not know how to protect or maintain their cognitive health, according to the 2026 “Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures” report and a new nationwide survey released by the Alzheimer’s Association.

Eighty-eight percent of U.S. adults say maintaining brain health is very important, and almost all adults ages 40 and older surveyed (99%) say it is at least as important as physical health. However, only 9% say they know “a lot” about how to maintain their brain health.

More than two-thirds say they worry about their brain health and about developing Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

“Americans care deeply about their brain health and say that midlife is the key time to start taking steps to support it,” said Heather M. Snyder, Ph.D., senior vice president of Medical and Scientific Relations for the Alzheimer’s Association. “But many don’t know where to start and are looking for clear guidance on actions they can take.”

The report comes as the impact of Alzheimer’s disease continues to expand nationwide. An estimated 7.4 million Americans age 65 and older are currently living with clin-

ical Alzheimer’s dementia. Total annual costs of caring for people living with dementia nationwide — excluding unpaid care — are projected to reach $409 billion this year, an increase of $25 billion from 2025. Since 2000, deaths from Alzheimer’s disease in the United States have increased 134%.

Despite broad awareness that lifestyle behaviors influence brain health, the survey reveals a significant disconnect between belief and action — and between brain health and dementia risk. While 75% of respondents say lifestyle behaviors such as diet, physical activity and sleep are very important for maintaining brain health, only 46% say those same behaviors are very important for reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Only 50% report getting at least seven hours of sleep daily or most days, 39% say they eat a healthy, balanced diet regularly, 42% engage in mentally stimulating activities such as reading or puzzles, and just 34% report regular physical activity. Nearly onethird say they exercise less than weekly or not at all.

At the same time, Americans express strong interest in programs designed to support brain health.

Seventy-three percent say they would consider participating in such programs, particularly those focused on cognitive exercises

(57%), health monitoring (46%), nutrition (36%) and physical activity (26%).

Many adults view midlife — ages 35 to 64 — as a critical window for protecting brain health.

Nearly two in five (38%) believe people should begin taking steps during midlife, and 46% say formal brain health programs are most appropriate during this stage. At the same time, about one-third view brain health as a lifelong priority.

Health care providers are seen as trusted sources of guidance, but conversations about brain health rarely occur. Eighty-six percent of adults would welcome these discussions during routine visits. Yet only 14% report ever discussing how to maintain brain health with their provider, and just 11% say they have talked about reducing dementia risk.

“These findings highlight an opportunity to better integrate brain health into routine health care,” Snyder said. “People are motivated to protect their brain health, and actionable guidance can support those efforts.”

To address these gaps, the Alzheimer’s Association is working with partners across communities, workplaces and health care systems to deliver research-backed resources and programs. These efforts are informed by the landmark U.S. POINTER study, which found that combining multiple healthy lifestyle habits can help protect cognitive function.
