Paul E. Durr – Businessman Goes From Military Missiles To Monument & Vault Company

Durr and his wife, the late Sheila Avery Durr (retired teacher of Selmer Middle School ) are owners and proprietors of the business. Durr, “I didn’t always work in the monument and vault business.” According to Durr, he went from a career as an engineer working with military Hawk Missiles to establishing his monument and vault Paul Durr company.

Looking back over his life Durr recalled, “I finished high school in Corinth in 1973.” After that he explained, “I went into the United States Army for three years. The military put me back into school for a year so that I could pursue my passion to study electronic computers. Actually I was a candidate for the Improve Hawk Missile, Redstone Arsenal, in Alabama. I volunteered for the draft for two years. I needed direction for my life after graduation, so I decided to give the United States Army two years of my life, with the intention of going to school while I was there. That was my goal.”

That means creating beautiful and unique Easter bonnets and dresses ordered by mothers who want their little girls to shine on Sunday, April 12. While last Easter, big and bright floral patterns were the rage, Leach said this year she expects to be sewing a lot of pastels this year.

There's still time for the Corinth seamstress to create her one-of-a-kind looks, Handmade by Lisa Leach. "Orders can take one to two weeks. I don't mind last minute," she said.

Leach's love of sewing began when she was a child.

"I learned to sew from both my grandmothers. I'd see them quilting, making aprons," she said. "My mom's mom would stay with us, she put me behind the sewing machine. My mom is also an amazing seamstress."

We first learn to balance at a young age. We learned to balance ourselves when we learned to walk.

We learned to balance ourselves to ride a bicycle. If the seesaw on the playground became unbalanced, we fell off. Age brought us new things to balance, like a checkbook. Of course, we always hear the advice from the doctor, "You must eat a well balanced meal. I'm still learning the art of that one. Like seesaws and other childhood endeavors, our lives must remain balanced, or we will "fall off," so to speak.

Everything in the universe must remain balanced. "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction," were Newton's famous words.

If the water in your pool becomes too acidic, it certainly won't be crystal and sparkling clear when you get ready for a dip. If the pH of soil is unbalanced, good luck getting your tomatoes to grow this summer. If our bodies' temperature

gets too high, it works to eliminate the cause.

To be able to accomplish that means we must be in good health. How can we stay in good health if everything in our lives is unbalanced?

Focusing too much on one or more aspects of our lives can throw our lives and our bodies off balance. Great, you got that project turned in on time. But how much time did it cost you from something else? Wonderful, you made all those meetings and picked up the slack for others, but at what cost to you? Everything in life has a price tag on it. How much are you really paying for things in life?

I have known people who seem to have everything. They have good jobs, great spouses and kids, a nice home to go to after a long day, and yet they've told me they're unhappy.

They feel something is missing.

Maybe if you're like them, your life is out of balance. Maybe you spend too much time at work or volunteering, or helping that family out at church that you forget to take care of yourself. When we are out of balance, we tend to lose focus and perspective. Little things to worry about take up much of our time when we lose focus of what is really important. This leads to drama and dysfunction and causes us to become petty. So what do you need to stay focused and balanced?

Faith is of utmost importance when it comes to maintaining a healthy life. When was the last time you let an issue "go" and just had faith it would work itself out?

Having dreams and goals is also important. We have to have something to strive for or we become complacent.

Making time for friends is also important. It's fun just to get together with the guys to watch a ballgame or have a girl's night out.

Friendships help keep us balanced.

Of course, a healthy diet and exercise help keep our body balanced to help fight off disease and sickness.

Don't worry as much and remember to keep God and family first. It's easier said than done, I understand.

But give it a try. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 says, "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: …..A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to case away. A time to reap and a time to sew."

Trusting this verse can help you to lead a more balanced life. Trust that God knows what is on your heart and mind, and that in His time, solutions will come, and problems will get solved. If we don't take care of ourselves, how can we take care of other people, or fulfill our obligations at work, or be there for our families? Life is about balance, and if we're not careful, we may fall off. Speaking of balance, the dishes in my sink have balanced about as long as they're going to. I had better get on them.

The school lasted one year and from there I went to Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. where I was stationed.”

After his decision to sign up for one more year, he went to a missile and electronics school. These were the missiles that would shoot down the jet fighter planes. Vietnam was still going on and he was trained to troubleshoot those missiles.

At Fort Bliss, Durr said he did the work that he went to school for. “We had a shop and there we maintained the equipment for the missile school.

After 18 months of military service I left Fort Bliss and went back to Tennessee. There I met my wife and we had two children, Nikki Durr Grey and the late Paul “Avie” Durr, both are educators in the Atlanta , GA. school system. My wife taught school for 33 years in the Selmer School District. She passed away

The women's home is a four-bedroom, three-bath house with a huge kitchen and living room with a pond in the back. The men's home has four bedrooms and two baths. Residents of the homes are required to attend sobriety meetings and attend church in addition to working. Residents stay about six months to a year.

The homes help them find jobs and gain the skills they need to take care of

almost three years ago after 40 years of marriage.”

After marriage Durr then went back to school and graduated from Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1979.

Upon receiving his associates degree in Electronics, he was hired by TVA in 1980 to work at Yellow Creek Nuclear Power Plant, Iuka, Miss. as an electrical inspector. He also worked for TVA for two or three years and then went into the private sector for about 20 years.

In 1992, Durr explained the Lord put on his heart to start Durr Monument & Vault company. “I didn’t have the foggiest idea what to do,” he adds. “It took me two more years to answer his call. In 1994, I lost my mother and that was an eye-opening experience. I came home to be with her on her death and I didn’t leave anymore. I started the business from scratch.

And thankful to God, it’s still going strong.” Durr etched in stone a final quote from his interview stating, “We are all going to leave this old world and join the eternal Resting Place, if we get it right with the Lord.” themselves. Transportation is provided.

Residents pay a portion of their salaries to the homes, and a portion to savings so they have money to live on when they graduate from the program. The homes allow residents to learn and grow spiritually in a healthy environment with encouragement.

The homes have a 10 p.m. curfew.

"The residents have got to start transitioning into real life, with nobody over them," Roberts said. "A lot of the graduates stay in the area where the support is and give back in their own ways."

With all the community support, the transitional program is a success, Roberts said. "The Bridge House is thriving. We're making it work."

She began her Designs by Lisa Leach about eight years ago. "I started making things for friends and it spread by word of mouth."

Leach started out creating hair bows for pageants and is still known for her bows.

This are not simple bows but rather elaborate and beautiful works of art. "I make a lot of pageant bows. They are OTT bows, over the top. When the girls come out on stage wearing them, people recognize my work."

Leach mostly sews custom orders, asking customers' what they want to see on their children. "Most of the time, they say just do what you like."

Some of her customers she's been

dressing since they were born. "I love that," Leach said.

She is known for mixing all different fabrics in her creations. "I don't do plain and simple. I'm known for mixing plaids and colors, stripes and polka dots. I don't really make any two the same. I like to find different fabrics. I like to use old patterns from the 80s."

Leach said she's known for ruffle pants for little ones. One of her signature looks is a romper that ties around the neck and has ruffles on the bottom.

"My favorite thing to make is first birthday outfits. I'll do a whole bundle. I also do a lot of babies' coming home from the hospital outfits," she said.

For Leach, sewing is fun. "It's a way of being creative. It's peaceful for me. I'd rather just sew and get creative."

Tips to Easily Shift to Daylight Saving Time

(StatePoint) Spring is just around the corner, which means that so too is Daylight Saving Time (DST). While many people look forward to the start of DST all winter long seeing it as a marker of warmer, longer days ahead, making the actual shift is not always so simple for your body, mind or schedule.

Here are a few ways to “spring forward” with ease: 1. Expect mornings to be a bit touch and go for the first several days. You may be extra groggy as your body adjusts to the new schedule.

Luckily, there are plenty of eye-opening ways to energize your morning, including getting some exercise (even

if it’s just a quick 5-10minute routine), playing uptempo music, hydrating and eating a healthful, proteinrich breakfast. And of course, there is always coffee.

2. Likewise, it may take a few days before you start to feel sleepy at your typical bedtime. Create a winddown routine in the evenings that will help relax you and get you primed to feel sleepy. This can include meditation, journaling and shutting down devices that emit blue light.

3. You’ll already be losing an hour of the weekend when DST starts, so don’t waste any time manually set-

ting your watches and clocks forward. For those who prefer a simple timekeeping device this process can be simplified. For example, by linking the Casio Edifice EQB1000D-1A to a smartphone, you can get the correct time not only in your current location, but for over 300 cities around the world (making travel smooth sailing as well). The watch accounts for both time zone and daylight saving time status of your current location, giving you one less to-do on this already short weekend.

Don’t let the transition to longer evenings create undue stress for you and your family. With some smart strategies, you can adjust to DST with ease.

Nearing 65? Don’t Delay on Medicare If you’re a younger senior, it’s not too early to start thinking about Medicare. It’s not something you can do at the last minute ... and it can be complicated.

Your best bet is to bookmark Medicare’s website (www.medicare.gov) on your computer so you’ll have it handy. Second best step is to take the quiz on the front page of the site: Find Out If You’re Eligible. The summary at the end will give you some answers you need, such as on what date you’ll become eligible for Medicare.

Some rules: • You need to apply during the three months before you turn age 65 if you want Medicare Part B to start when you become 65.

• Medicare Part B covers things that Part A doesn’t. Part B covers doctor visits, physical therapy, home care and outpatient hospital care. Part A covers care in a hospital, some home care, and nursing facilities.

• Medicare Part A is free. You don’t pay for it as long as you have worked enough quarters for Social Security.

If not, you’ll likely have to pay.

• Medicare Part B costs $115.40 at this point and will be deducted from your Social Security check each month.

• Your initial enrollment period starts three months before your 65th birthday. If you haven’t signed up in time, Part B will be delayed for three months. Then, if you still don’t sign up during open enrollment each year, your monthly premium will go up and stay up forever.

Parts A and B are just two pieces of the Medicare puzzle. Familiarize yourself with the rest of it well in advance, including Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D).

Viruses Sometimes Attack the Heart DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had the flu and called his doctor for medicine.

Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was having a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart.

I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have?

How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it? — R.R. ANSWER: Your friend had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart.

Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was first identified.

Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infection (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal disorder (stomach flu) might precede it. A young person — and your friend is considered young — struggling to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause.

Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one person to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus.

We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed, since nearly all Coxsackie infec-

tions are minor troubles. In cases like your friend’s, medicines to keep the heart beating forcefully usually can tide a person over the dangerous period of heart failure.

Many times, the problem is nerve malfunction. Quite often, health cannot be restored to the nerve, but things can be done. How to Talk to Your Children About Tough Money Matters

Clinical psychologists note that when kids don’t have enough information about something, they may become anxious, make up their own explanations -- which can include blaming themselves for a perceived problem -- or seek information from other, potentially unreliable sources.

They recommend talking to your children about financial concerns, keeping in mind that the level of detail shared should be based on your child’s age.

Preschool and Elementary Age Experts suggest limiting financial discussion with very young children to the basics. If the economy is struggling, you might tell them that this can happen when businesses spend more money than they have and have to pay back what they borrowed, which means those businesses don’t have money to spend on other things, like employees. You might also explain that when money is tighter, they may need to wait a little longer to get certain items such as new toys. Psychologists emphasize the need to be honest, but reassuring, letting children know that tough financial times are only temporary and that you will always provide them with everything they need.

“Tweens” and Teens Children in this age group are old enough for you to explain what financial terms mean and why the economy doesn’t always perform well. You might also provide an overview of how credit works,

introducing terms such as interest, risk and liability.

You could also engage your kids in family budget decisions, particularly should you feel a financial pinch. If they want to go on a vacation or buy that new video game system, ask for their ideas on how to save up the money. If you can’t afford to eat out as often, let them pick a favorite restaurant for a special monthly or quarterly meal. You might also consider encouraging older children to get jobs so they can earn their own spending money.

College Kids Experts say that at this age, families should be open and straightforward when discussing finances. In addition to helping college-age kids understand a change in the economy or other financial development, explain what it could mean for your family’s financial situation and whether it could impact them. Tell them how you’ve been spending and saving, describe struggles you’ve faced, and outline the steps you’ll take to shore up finances. You can also help them build their own budgets and saving plans. Being honest about financial mistakes you’ve made can help your children avoid them in the future.

Cast-Iron Cooking

I've joined the cast-iron cookware collectors' cult.

We're a small but passionate group with a common cause: the restoration of antique cast-iron cookware.

I can't pass up a thrift store or garage sale without purchasing one or two pieces, as long as they're in good condition. My cast-iron cookware is not just for display; I use it on a daily basis.

My love affair with castiron cookery began when my mother, Angeline, gave me the heavy, black, castiron skillet that originally belonged to my grandmother, Willie Mae Davis. The thing I love most about

cooking in my grandmother's cast-iron skillet is that it's a direct connection to my history and heritage. I don't fry foods very often, but my heirloom skillet is my pan of choice for the task. As I stand there turning pieces of fish or chicken in the bubbling, hot oil, I think about all the other women in my family who have done the same with this pan.

In times past, properly seasoned cast iron was the nonstick cookware of its day. It can stand up to high heat and almost any type of utensil without damaging its surface. Cast-iron cookware also leaches small amounts of iron into the food, a helpful benefit for those who have iron deficiencies. Cast iron heats up slowly, so using the cookware requires a little plan-

Recently, I purchased a large, cast-iron skillet for my daughter, Deanna,

which she immediately put to use to pan-sear fish. So, from mother to daughter to granddaughter and greatgranddaughter, the cast-iron tradition continues in our family, one fabulous meal at a time. And to think that it all started with a single

Sprinkle the bottom of the skillet evenly with the salt.

Wash the chicken pieces and pat them dry with food-safe paper towels.

Sprinkle the pieces with the pepper and poultry seasoning. Place the chicken

pieces, skin-side down, in the hot skillet. Cook on high for 3 to 5 minutes.

Cover the skillet with a heavy lid and turn the heat down to medium. The chicken will release juices and fats that will "fry" the chicken and crisp the skin.

Let the chicken cook about 30 minutes.

Remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside on a plate. Combine the flour with the juices in the skillet until smooth, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the water or broth. Stir to combine. Turn heat to high to thicken. Add the butter.

Turn heat down to medium.

Place chicken in skillet, skin side up. Cover skillet with the lid. Cook the chicken about 15 to 20 minutes until tender. Serve over rice. Makes 6 servings.

To begin, what is a society?

In this article society means what goes on in a community, county, or state. Of course there is a national society and international one as well. But let's just discuss the community, county and state. It is the habits and customs of all the people living in a particular location, for example, Corinth, Alcorn County, and Mississippi.

Each individual plays a role in a society. Do citizens practice what they preach? Do they obey the rules of their city, county and state?

That may seem elementary and some items may be. In Corinth do all the citizens place their garbage in can and bags as directed to be picked up on certain days? Do all citizens pay county taxes as required? Finally, Mississippi requires all drivers to purchase a driver's license. Do you know anyone who slip and drive, breaking the state law?

Each person on this earth has a responsibility to his/her society.

Remember, God placed all of us here for a reason. During the early years, around eleven

or twelve, a child is trying to figure out how to become a gift to society.

Home, church and school, the three most important institutions, need to teach and model values for the children to see.

1. Each child must learn to respect self and all others.

Cursing and lots of negative language need not become any part of children's conversation.

2. Dress decently with clothing properly placed on the body.

And, surely, the clothing must be clean.

3. Eat balanced diets in order to be healthy. Fast food can be eaten sometimes, but not daily.

4. Drinking alcohol beverages is off key for children and all Adults must know when to quit.

5. Some states have legalized pot for recreational us.

Yet, no one knows what it will do to the body. Using it for medical Reasons according to instruction from a doctor seem reasonable.

6. Learn to control temper.

No one deserves to hear another Person out of control.

You get the idea. God placed all of us on this earth for a reason. It is the responsibility of each adult to assist children around to become good citizens.

Let's do better in 2020.

Roasted Vegetables Cooked until they are tender and golden, these roasted vegetables can accompany almost any winter meal — especially roasted meat and poultry.

Oriental Chicken Express Today, Chinese dishes are almost as American as apple pie! This filling main dish is no exception.

1 1/4 cups diagonally sliced celery 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/4 cup diced green onion 1 (16-ounce) can fat-free chicken broth 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 1/2 cups diced cooked chicken breast 1 (8-ounce) can sliced water chestnuts, drained 1 (8-ounce) can pineapple chunks, packed in fruit juice, drained 3 cups hot cooked rice 1. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute celery, green pepper and onion just until tender. In a covered jar, combine chicken broth and flour. Shake well to blend. Pour broth mixture into skillet with vegetables. Stir in soy sauce.

2. Continue cooking over medium heat, until mixture starts to thicken, stirring often. Add chicken, water chestnuts and pineapple. Mix well to combine. Lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until mixture is heated through, stirring often.

3. For each serving, spoon 1/2 cup hot rice on a plate and spoon about 1 cup chicken mixture over top.

Serves 6.

• Each serving equals: 214 calories, 2g fat, 16g protein, 33g carb., 298mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 1/2 Starch, 1 1/2 Meat, 1 Vegetable.

Cut potatoes into 2-inch chunks.

Cut root ends and stalks from fennel bulbs; cut each bulb lengthwise through the root end into 4 wedges.

Cut each onion into 4 wedges. Cut each squash lengthwise into quarters; discard seeds. Cut each quarter crosswise into 2 pieces. Cut carrots and parsnips crosswise in half. (If carrots and parsnips are thick, cut thick portion lengthwise in half.)

2. Preheat oven to 400 F. Evenly divide vegetables between 2 large roasting pans, each about 17 by 11 1/2 inches (or between 1 large roasting pan and one 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch jelly-roll pan). Toss vegetables in each pan with 2 tablespoons olive or salad oil. In small bowl, mix bouillon, pepper, salt and thyme.

Toss half the seasoning mixture with vegetables in each pan.

3. Arrange pans on 2 oven racks.

Roast vegetables 30 minutes, stirring once. Switch pans on oven racks; roast 20 to 30 minutes longer, stirring once, until vegetables are tender and nicely browned.

4. Remove vegetables to warm large platter. Pour 2 tablespoons hot water into each pan, stirring to loosen brown bits. Pour liquid from each pan over vegetables. Garnish with thyme sprigs. Serves 8.

3 Ways to Weather the 2020 Tax Season

(StatePoint) Over half of U.S. adults say financial stress negatively impacted their personal health and work performance in 2018, according to new research from Lincoln Financial Group. When it comes to tax season, preparation is key to easing anxiety, according to experts.

“Tax season can be stressful for many people, but it’s also an opportunity to strengthen your financial plan,” says Michael Corr, chief estate and business planning strategist, Lincoln Financial Advisors, National Planning Team.

“The good news is that there are some simple ways to manage the process.”

To weather the 2020 tax season, Corr offers these tips: Get the 411 Whether preparing your own tax return or paying a professional, good organization saves time and money. In addition to collecting the common tax documents (e.g., W-2s, 1099s and mortgage interest statements), you should gather receipts, evidence of contributions to charities and 529 plans, and basic information on assets sold during 2019.

Also consider milestones that impact taxes, such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, adoption and sale of a home.

Organizing this information is the first step toward ensuring timely filing.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act significantly increased the standard deduction for federal tax purposes. For the 2019 tax year, the standard deduction is $12,200 for individuals and $24,400 for married couples filing jointly. This higher deduction amount means many taxpayers won’t itemize deductions, thereby simplifying tax return preparation.

Be Proactive Consider what actions you can take prior to the end of tax season to lessen its financial burden.

For example, if you qualify and act prior to April 15, you may deduct contributions to an IRA up to $6,000 ($7,000 if you’re over 50) on the 2019 income tax return.

Maximum Simplified Employee Pension IRA contributions of $56,000 for 2019 can be made any time prior to the tax filing deadline, including extensions.

Or, if you participate in a high deductible health plan, you may be eligible to contribute to a health savings account with pretax dollars through April 15. For the 2019 tax year, the contribution limit is $3,500 if you’re single and $7,000 for families, with an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution for those 55 or older.

Use Technology Embrace these technological advances to reduce tax preparation and filing burdens: • Whether self-preparing or hiring a professional, tax information from documents filed with the IRS (W-2s, 1099s. etc.) can be downloaded directly into tax-prep software, so be sure to access electronic versions of these documents.

• Online banking makes it easy to manipulate account information and organize data about relevant expenses paid during the year, like estimated tax payments, medical and tuition payments and business expenses.

• The IRS has offered the opportunity for electronic filing of tax returns for several years.
