When my daughter, Yalonda, was very young I taught her to always be aware of her surroundings.

Well, I pay attention to things; therefore, I could be labeled an “observer,” because I use my sense of sight as a tool to help me write editorials and daily inspirations. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are people who are noisy and unobservant. They do nothing but gossip with any information they may have gleaned.

I'm a person who serves as an observer in order to give people a little perspective – to see things in a different way. Being the observer that I am, I noticed that in various parts of town there are many broken windows and streets littered with trash.

The broken windows seem to be a metaphor, visible signs of disorder, in an environment that goes untended. Other signs of

Being forced to confront these blights can heavily influence how people feel about their environment, particularly their sense of safety.

In 1982, with their Broken Windows Theory, social scientists James Wilson and George Kelling suggested broken windows that are not quickly repaired will encourage people to break more windows in the same neighborhood.

According to the theory, broken windows not only invite more broken windows, but also encourage vandals to break into the building and damage it further. An un-repaired broken window suggests to people that no one cares and no one is monitoring the area.

An un-repaired broken window in a neighborhood suggests disorder. Wilson and Kelling believed that this suggestion of disorder encouraged people towards further disorder. Wilson and Kelling saw crime as the end result of a chain of smaller events, believing that crime originated from disorder. If disorder were eliminated, they believed

fewer serious crimes would occur.

On a basic level, the Broken Windows Theory demonstrates how people will follow the social norms of their environment.

People will often interact with their environment according to signals taken from the physical space around them. Monkey see; monkey do.

A similar phenomenon happens when people dispose of their litter in public places. Research has shown that people are far more likely to leave rubbish in a public space (on the street, in a park) if the public space is already littered. A clean, un-littered space suggests that people care, that littering is not allowed and that there may be a penalty for littering. A space already heavily littered suggests that people in the area don’t care, that there are no standards to live up to and that littering the area further is acceptable.

Though broken windows and trash are things that permeate some communities, as an observer I write this month to give the community a little perspective.

On the Japanese island of Koshima, there lived a tribe of macaque monkeys. It was the early 1950s, and a group of scientists had arrived on the island to study these curious creatures.

One day, a young female macaque named Imo (the Japanese word for potato) decided to start dipping her sweet potatoes into a nearby river before eating them. Her reason was simple and entirely reasonable – she saw sand on the potatoes and wanted to wash it off. None of the older and more mature monkeys had thought of doing this before–they would only brush off the sand with their hands.

Imo’s brothers and sisters saw her performing this unfamiliar cleansing ritual. Being monkeys, they began to ape her actions, plunging their own potatoes into the river. Soon, her mother followed suit as this monkey family discovered the joys of eating clean potatoes.

What the scientists observed over the next few years was a dramatic change in potato-consuming behavior throughout the island. The practice of potato washing spread rapidly through

the entire macaque colony, and within a decade, every capable macaque on the island was washing potatoes.

It was not only the technique of potato washing that the monkeys learned. At some point during those years of monkey-tomonkey knowledge sharing, Imo discovered a second hack to make her potato consumption more pleasurable–by dipping her potatoes into the ocean instead of the river, the saltwater would season the potato and make it taste better.

After each bite, she would dip the freshly exposed section of her potato back into the ocean to enhance its flavor. This habit spread just as quickly through the macaque community. You see, I've often heard people say that “one monkey doesn't stop no show,” but one monkey changed a culture.

So, urge the people in the community to stop monkeying around and let's work together to be the change that we would like to see. This is just from an observer who offers a little perspective.

Blue-Light Special Having trouble sleeping? Many of us do as we get older. The solution might be as simple as wearing a certain type of goggles.

Researchers have known for a long time that seniors have trouble sleeping, and they know why: Our eyes change, and during the day we don’t get enough “blue” light, one of the colors in the natural light spectrum.

That blue light affects our circadian rhythms — our natural 24-hour cycle of wakefulness and sleep. If we don’t get enough of it, our sleep suffers.

This is apparently a big problem in nursing homes and medical facilities where the type of lighting is chosen for safety. It doesn’t promote proper sleep patterns, however, and can cause serious sleep disruptions for those who stay there, especially those who are unable to get out in sunlight.

A 2005 study of patients in a longterm facility tested whether exposure to the blue light would increase the length of time the patients would stay asleep. They were checked and found to be asleep 90 percent of the time, as opposed to 67 percent of the time for those who hadn’t had the light treatment.

Over the years, scientists have been experimenting with different types of lighting devices. Until the glasses came along, research was done with specially built light boxes. That meant a patient had to sit in front of it for the prescribed few hours.

I’ve seen photos of these goggles.

They look a lot like regular glasses with a thin bar of blue light across the top that shines down around the eyes.

These goggles aren’t ready just yet.

More testing has to be done. But I suspect the lines will be long when they do come out.

Stress Tests Help Detect Heart Disease DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had an EKG in preparation for surgery.

The doctor said it was abnormal. I was sent for a stress test. I could not do the physical stress test, so I had a chemical one. I was told that the results were OK. No one told me why the EKG was abnormal. I am very concerned. Is it OK just to go on living as I have been, or do I need to do something?

I have searched the Internet for information but can find none. — M.D. ANSWER: A resting EKG is a good test, but it’s not the ultimate heart test.

Things can look strange on a resting EKG. In order to find out if those strange-looking things are significant, the next step is to do a more sophisticated heart test, one that is more sensitive in detecting true changes and more specific in eliminating EKG changes that look odd but don’t truly represent heart disease.

That’s where a stress test comes in.

During a stress test, the person exercises, usually on a treadmill. All during the test, an EKG runs. It shows changes if the stressed heart isn’t getting enough blood when it has to pump harder. You didn’t have the treadmill variety of a stress test; you had one where a drug stressed your heart. The end result is the same.

Your stress test must have removed the suspicion of heart disease that arose from the resting EKG. Do you play cards? Your stress test trumped

your resting EKG. It’s OK for you to go on living just as you have been. If something was wrong, the doctor would be obliged to tell you so.

The pouch can cause swallowing problems. Food can get caught in it and remain there. When it finally leaves the pouch, it has a most unpleasant odor.

There are many surgical procedures to remove the pouch and shore up the throat tissue. Scopes are used by some doctors. Recovery is quicker with the scope. After surgery, you will not be allowed to eat or drink for a day or so, longer for the standard operation. The results are almost always excellent.

How to Make an Impact Through Volunteering and Civic Engagement

Let these amazing stories behind Points of Light’s Daily Point of Light Award honorees inspire you to action: • 17-year-old Henry Morse of New Orleans helps run CultureAid Nola. “We are a no barrier, no stigma food distribution center that helps feed over 600 families a week.”

Morse arrives at the center every Saturday at 5:30 a.m. and leads volunteers in packing and handing out food to members of his community. “I got involved in March 2020. It grew into something that I am extremely passionate about,” says Morse.

• After a 30-year Navy career, William Hicks now volunteers in the AARP TaxAide program. In addition to personally preparing tax returns for senior and lowincome individuals pro bono, he serves as training coordinator for the state of Maryland, leading efforts to train and certify tax preparation volunteers.

• “A small drop in the ocean can make a big differ-

ence in the world,” says fourth grader Rayansh Boddu, who joined Recycle My Battery as a vice president and recruited more kids to spread the word.

He’s also actively working on Smart Can, which will use AI technology to sort materials needed for recycling in trash.

He’s placed over 20 battery bins in different locations and collected more than 25,000 batteries for recycling so far.

Getting Started Motivation among Americans is high. In a recent Points of Light survey, a third of respondents said they plan to volunteer more than they did before the pandemic. But figuring out where and how to make an impact is not always straightforward and online resources can help. Points of Light Engage is the world’s largest digital hub for in-person and virtual volunteering and community engagement opportunities. There are also 177 innovative volunteermobilizing organizations in 37 countries that are a part of the Points of Light Global Network. They provide realtime information on pressing community needs. The site also offers tips for safely volunteering, along with inspiration for alternative means of getting involved through Points of Light’s Civic Circle, such as using your purchasing power, lending your voice to a cause or urging your employer to action.

“We hope you’ll take the time to look for volunteer opportunities and to thank a volunteer in your life,” says Paquin. “Every action, no matter how small, can have an impact and change a life.”

Emotional Self-Care: Feel to Heal

I have been enjoying the information on self-care.

We have learned what selfcare is and the different components that are a part of self-care. We have learned about social selfcare and cultivating our connections and relationships, we even discussed setting boundaries. In the last issue, we discussed work self-care and how to work smarter and not harder. Let's go a step further this month. Let's learn emotional self-care. Now I get it. No one likes to discuss their emotions and feelings.

A lot of times we are encouraged to keep on pushing, be strong, and not waddle. It is important to remain balanced and not avoid our emotions while also not being led by our emotions.

Emotional health is a

critical part of our holistic wellness. How you feel on the inside influences not only your mental wellness but your physical wellbeing as well. Learning emotional self-care will lead you to possess a happier and healthier life.

Emotional self-care refers to the act of becoming aware and identifying what you are feeling and allowing yourself to channel those feelings in a way that benefits your overall wellness. Your emotions directly connect to how you feel every day. I encourage you to not ignore them.

Knowing how to express yourself healthily will equip you to handle the circumstances of life. When you ignore, avoid, and attempt to suppress your emotions, you are more likely to experience depression, stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. You are probably wondering what it means to practice emotional

self-care? What does it look like? I have provided some tips below: 1. Know Your Feelings: It's natural to want to hold your emotions inside but doing so can be detrimental.

An important thing is to learn to feel and be in tune with your feelings. I have provided a feelings wheel to help increase and build your emotional vocabulary.

2. Understand your emotional needs: It is okay selfish. Choosing to focus on your emotional needs first will help you and those around you.

3. Set boundaries: If you struggle with putting yourself first, then you probably also struggle with saying "no." If something or someone is hurting you emotionally, it may be good to evaluate their or its place in your life. Set boundaries and make sure they are respected.

4. Pinpoint your emotional triggers: As you

become in tune with your emotions, you will notice patterns. Think about what causes you to feel uncomfortable, and then shift the focus to reduce the impact on your mental wellness.

5. Embrace quiet time: Having quiet time to rest and recharge is valuable to your emotional health, especially in today's fastpaced society. Take some time to meditate, practice breathing exercises, or write in your journal. This can help increase mental clarity and a better understanding of your feelings.

Corinth ministry provides furniture and household items to those in need

By Lucy Weber For those in need, a couch or a bed can be an answer to a prayer.

For a year, The Sheltering Tree ministry at Oakland Baptist Church in Corinth has been providing furniture and household items to those who find they need a helping hand.

“It’s been unique how it happens,” said church member Donna Miles, who organized the church’s ministry. “I may get a call from someone who says they’ve got a couch or loveseat or something to give away. Then, within minutes I get a call from someone who needs a couch or a loveseat. I’m amazed at how it works.”

“I don’t think we’ve got a week without giving away some furniture,” she said.

“It’s been great to see how the Lord has worked.”

Before Christmas, a local woman’s house burned and the church took up a collection. “With all the money donated, we were able to meet her needs and had money left over so we paid three months of rent,” she said.

As soon as Sheltering Tree volunteers loaded it all up, there was an immediate need for the items.

er” and realized that with Miles’ background and other dedicated volunteers that the ministry could work. Church members have been generous in their response.

Last winter, a woman without heat in her home contacted The Sheltering Tree, but the ministry didn’t have any heaters.

Miles said she put out a text to church members that led to a member going out to buy a truckload of heaters. That woman got immediate help and now there are heating units in storage for it people need them this winter, Miles said.

Calvary Baptist Church in Corinth has donated storage space for the furniture and other items, and other churches are helping too. “We’ve been blessed to see how He has pulled the community together,” Miles said. “We want this to be a community ministry, and it is growing.”

Miles said the ministry always has a need for volunteers who can help with physically moving the donated items into storage and then into the homes of those who need the items. “We need more people to help,” she said.

Another part of the ministry is the giving away of Blessing Bins. The group creates boxes full of necessary items that families may need. “We fill the bins for specific rooms and personalize them to the RE-ELECT families in the initial contact,” Miles said. Bins are created for welcome, kitchen, bedroom and MAYOR bathroom.

Those are just a few of how quickly God responds to those in need through the ministry, Miles said.

The Sheltering Tree helps anyone who needs assistance, Miles said. Local agencies know of the church outreach and they will refer people who find themselves in need of specific furniture or other items.

“Our goal is to ultimately gain the trust of the people we help so that we can share the Gospel with them. We try to stay in contact with them.”

Many of the families helped come from hurtful, abusive or addiction situations and they’re working to make a better life. “A lot don’t trust well, and we’ve got a place for them to trust,” Miles said. “There are a lot of women who have had to leave their homes quickly and find themselves where they and their kids had nothing.”

Items like beds, couches and baby furniture are big needs. “Small appliances are in hot demand too,” she said. “We tell people we can only give what we have.”

Miles, who has a degree in social work and a commitment to helping others, said the idea for this unique ministry came from her running into people who needed furniture to get their lives on track.

Prayer warrior eases others' burdens by lifting them to Lord anonymously

This prayer warrior is a member of Chewalla Baptist Church in McNairy County, Tenn., and leads a prayer box ministry for those who anonymously seek God's love and healing through written requests.

"We want to show the love of God. When I think of many people have prayed over me and how God has shown up and shown out, I want to do that for others. That's my prayer," she said.

Denton and her aunt Wendy Bowers began leading a Bible study for women in the McNairy County jail before Covid hit. "When the good Lord opened up that door for me to go, I said let's go." On Saturday nights, she and her aunt led the women in studying the Bible and encouraged them to share their prayer requests.

The jail had a strict anonymity policy and no names could be used. At first, the women in the group hesitated to trust Denton and Bowers and only offered very generic requests. "When they saw we could be trusted, we would tell them to pour their burdens out and allow us to take that burden off them.

"We would take those prayer requests to our Sunday School class and those members would pray for them all week long," she said.

study, it is once again halted because a recurrence of cases there now.

"We couldn't go in again so that started me thinking about my church family who are not releasing their burdens," she said, so she proposed to the pastor and deacons at Chewalla Baptist that the church start a similar, anonymous prayer ministry. "We didn't know how many are struggling with problems."

With the blessing of church leadership, two, locked prayer boxes were put in the church.

"Because I want people to feel comfortable (releasing their prayer concerns), I asked people to be on the prayer team to be tightlipped, to show discernment and compassion."

Once a week, Denton will gather the contents of the prayer boxes and hand them out to prayer ministry team members to take home and pray. Now, Denton is preparing for a third prayer box to be added outside the church building, and along with a

Blessing Box supplying free cans of food for the community to take.

At the church's annual Picnic in the Park that was open to the entire community to celebrate the Fourth of July, Denton announced the church's plans for a third prayer box that will be available in the parking lot so anyone can write down their requests for someone to pray for them anonymously. "We want to show them we really do care and show everyone the love of God. "Maybe they will see how we care and they will eventually step over our church threshold. We hope this shows that churches do care. We would love to see other places pick this idea up and do it."

"God knows who these prayer requests come from.

No one else needs to know.

We want them to know it will all be private," Denton said. "We're treating folks like they want to be treated."

6 Things to Know About COVID-19 Vaccines for Children Under 5 (StatePoint) COVID-19 vaccines are now available for children under 5 years old, and the American Medical Association (AMA) is urging parents to get their children vaccinated.

“The wait for this moment has been excruciating for parents who were ready on day one for their children to receive a vaccination to prevent severe COVID,” says Jack Resneck, Jr., M.D., president of the AMA. “While there is overwhelming scientific evidence showing the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, we know many parents and families still have questions.”

kids under 5: 1. The vaccines are safe: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reviewed all trial safety data before authorizing and

recommending vaccines for children under 5. The vast majority of side effects were mild, including irritability and crying, sleepiness, fatigue and loss of appetite.

2. The vaccines are

effective: Both the PfizerBioNTech and Moderna vaccines are effective at preventing severe disease.

Based on 230 pages of data, regulators said the vaccines show a strong immune response in children, and are somewhat effective at preventing symptomatic disease.

3. They’re widely available: Vaccines will be available at pediatricians’ offices, as well as from primary care physicians.

4. COVID-19 poses a danger to children: According to the CDC, COVID-19 is a leading cause of death among children ages 0-19 years.

months to 4 years, there have been more than 2 million cases of COVID-19, more than 20,000 hospitalizations, and more than 200 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

5. There is more than one dose: Like most vaccines, the COVID-19 vaccines involve more than one dose. Pfizer’s vaccine is a three-dose primary series at one-tenth the dosage of the adult formulation. The Moderna vaccine primary series is a two-dose regimen, spaced four to eight weeks apart, at one-fourth the dosage of the adult formulation.

Booster shots will likely be part of the regimen, too, just as they are for other age groups.

6. Getting up to date is important: Make sure your

child is up to date on all vaccines when they get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Adolescents and adult immunizations declined during the pandemic and an estimated 26 million recommended vaccinations were missed in 2020 as compared to 2019.

Pulled Pork Is Perfect for July My father was born and raised in Winston-Salem, N.C., the perfect place to find a delicious pulled-pork barbeque sandwich. The Piedmont triad area where he grew up is famous for its pork barbeque and highly seasoned, vinegarbased sauces. Pigs are plentiful in that area of the South, so barbeques featuring the whole pig -- split open and roasted over a hardwood charcoal fire, or using just the pork shoulder -- are popular. After the meat is cooked, it's "pulled" off the bone by hand, sliced, shredded or chopped into pieces, mixed with barbeque sauce and served on a bun.

Pork shoulders are the front leg of the pig and are fairly inexpensive cuts of meat. The shoulder includes two cuts: the Boston butt, which is a rectangular roast from the upper part of the

front leg, and the picnic shoulder. The Boston butt is the cut of choice for pulled-pork sandwiches.

Select a Boston butt that has a white-fat cap and is marbled with fat throughout the meat. The fat and the collagen (the connective tissue) "baste" the meat as it melts away. The collagen also turns into simple sugars that make this typically tougher cut of meat moist, tender and flavorful as it slowly cooks.

Pulled-pork barbeque sandwiches were used to entice potential voters to attend political rallies. These flavorful sandwiches definitely have my vote.

This crockpot recipe for pulled pork is perfect for anyone who can't barbeque the traditional way. Serve the pulled pork with a scoop of coleslaw on the sandwich or on the side, along with some baked beans, corn on the cob and sweet, lemon-flavored iced tea, and you'll have the makings of a Southernstyle barbeque no matter where you live!

Barbequed Pulled-Pork Sandwiches

This recipe is a great way to tenderize an inexpensive cut of meat and conserve energy by using the crockpot. The salsa infuses the meat with flavor while it cooks, and the barbeque sauce is the perfect finish. You'll have enough pulled pork to feed a crowd, or you can freeze any leftovers for another fabulous meal!

5 pounds boneless pork butt, cut into 2-inch chunks

2 large onions, sliced 1 jar (16 ounces) Pace Chunky Salsa or Pace Pineapple Mango Chipotle Salsa 1 1/2 cups water 1 bottle (16 ounces) barbecue sauce 1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar 2 tablespoons prepared mustard 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon salt 24 hamburger buns

1. Place half the onions in the crockpot. Add the meat and then the rest of the onions. Pour the salsa and the water over and the pork and the onions.

2. Turn the crockpot to the HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours or on the LOW setting for 7 to 9 hours or until the pork is tender and can be shredded easily with a fork.

3. Remove the pork and onions from the crockpot and discard any of the remaining liquid and accumulated fat. Let the meat cool slightly. Shred the pork, using two forks. Mix together the barbeque sauce, vinegar, mustard, brown sugar and salt until well-combined.

4. Mix the shredded pork and onions with the barbeque sauce. Return the barbequed pork to the crockpot and cook on HIGH for another hour. Serve about 1/2 cup shredded pork in each roll. Top with coleslaw, if desired.

Serves 24.

The Mental Health Crisis of Moms: What You Need to Know

(StatePoint) A new survey reveals that the mental health of American moms is going largely unattended, with many living under a near-constant state of stress and few seeking support to ease the burden.

The research, commissioned by MDLIVE, an Evernorth company and leading provider of virtual care services in the United States, finds that 33% of mothers feel stressed or overwhelmed by their responsibilities as a mom at least five days a week.

Drivers of their stress and anxiety may include financial concerns, ripple effects of the pandemic, including the mental health crisis among teens, work responsibilities and being a caregiver simultaneously to both children and aging parents.

Yet, for many moms, the prospect of managing their mental health has become a source of stress in and of itself. For 37% of moms, concerns about their own mental health are among their biggest stressors, second only to finances (40%).
