A lot of us may feel that once we graduate high school or college, we are through learning. That may be true from the traditional sense of classroom learning. But we never leave the classroom of life. Each day presents unique opportunities to learn and/or teach. I call these opportunities "teachable moments" and my life has been enriched by them. One which stands out to me occurred during an annual trip to the optometrist.

Part of my routine exam required the dilation of my eyes. In case you're not familiar with the procedure, drops are used to widen your pupils. Vision is temporarily blurred by the drops. My vision was blurred and I had great difficulty seeing. I was asked to identify some letters by an assistant, and then was told to wait on the doctor. I sat there with my vision blurred, no longer seeing things as clearly as I had a few

What Are You Looking For? moments before. It made me pause and ponder on the various viewpoints we all have. What was so clear in my eyes three minutes ago now appeared entirely different under the fog of the medicine. My reflection was interrupted by the doctor entering, and we began to talk about the latest headlines in the news. One topic that was prevalent at that time was African-American males being stopped by law enforcement. The doctor expressed how difficult it was for him to imagine being an African-American male and being pulled over. I began to tell of one experience in which I was stopped by the police.

It was a beautiful summer day and I was delivering newspapers.

The windows were down; a breeze was rushing over me. I was traveling

down highway 45 and suddenly a law enforcement officer came up behind me. I wasn't speeding, I had my seatbelt on, and my tag was in date. He turned his strobe lights on and I pulled over. As the officer approached, I held my hands out of the window to assure the officer that I was not in possession of a weapon. He asked to see my license and registration. Then he proceeded to ask me to step out of the car and he searched me. I asked why he pulled me over. As it turns out, I had a silver tag plate around my license plate. The officer said that was illegal and it was a twenty five dollar fine. I asked him if he had a screwdriver so that I could remove the tag cover. He did, and so I removed the cover. It was humiliating and embarrassing for me. At

Life is a giant classroom and each day provides us with opportunities to teach and learn. In both instances, both the young boy and I were able to learn from our "teachable moments." In the Bible, Jesus used a teachable moment to teach his disciples as they experienced a storm. We too, must always remember that we can learn some of the most valuable life lessons from the storms we go through.

So remember the next time you experience a teachable moment, if you don't pass the test, you will have to take another one until you do. Ring, ring!!! Class dismissed!

The doctor and I continued our conversation and he told me of a story about his son. The doctor was out eating one evening with his son when they noticed a disheveled and bedraggled man. He certainly didn't look as though he "belonged" in this up-scale restaurant. Other patrons were giving this man frowns and stares. The doctor gave his son some money and instructed him to go see if the man needed anything.

His son and the man subsequently struck up a conversation. The son asked the man, "Sir, what are you looking for?" The man replied, "I am looking for Jesus." That was

Raising Men Lawn Care Service helps young men give back to their communities by mowing lawns or doing yard work -- free of charge -- for veterans, the elderly, the disabled and single mothers.

Smith sought to establish a program that inspires young men to learn and understand their value in society, and acts as a true father figure to many young boys throughout the country. While founded originally in Alabama, the organization now has a presence in almost all 50 states.

Seniors Notice More Than Youngsters Do A new study has shown that we seniors take in more information from the environment. Researchers call it “hyper-encoding,” when we notice more of what’s going on around us and merge it with other information we’re getting at the same time. And we’re 30 percent better at it than our younger counterparts.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re with your daughter talking to a friend, Mr. Jones, on the street, listening to what he’s saying. Not only do you listen to him, but you also notice that he’s wearing a red tie and a blue shirt.

Later you say to your daughter, “I’d like to buy your father a shirt like Mr. Jones was wearing.” To which your daughter will likely reply: “What shirt? I didn’t notice it.” Not only that, but if you happen to spot that same shirt in a store, you’re more likely to remember where you first saw it.

Does this make us wiser? Perhaps. I suspect we’re better at making decisions because we’ve noticed so much more around us over time. We understand cause and effect because we’ve witnessed events and taken in information, and when new information is presented, we can tie it to the previous events we’ve seen.

We’re good at problem solving, likely because of past experience. We take the parts and pieces and put them together in ways that our younger counterparts don’t. We tend to get good grades in classes we take, likely because we remember old information and tie it to the new.

On the other hand, this reduced ability to filter out extraneous information can explain why many of us find television commercials so annoying. Not only do we remember the content of the show we’re watching, but we can also recall the commercial information, repeated over and over.

Viral Infection Can Cause Dizziness DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I got a sudden attack of dizziness that landed me in bed. I couldn’t stand.

Finally, with the help of my husband, I got to the doctor, who said I had a viral infection called vestibular neuritis. I am taking medicine and am somewhat better, but the dizziness isn’t completely gone. Will it go? When? — L.T. ANSWER: I have to warn readers that the causes of dizziness are diverse, and vestibular neuritis, while common, is only one of many causes.

The vestibule of the inner ear has three fluid-filled canals that work like a carpenter’s balance, that gadget whose center contains a fluid-containing tube with a bubble in it. The balance tells the carpenter if a piece of wood is aligned. The inner ear canals tell people if they are aligned. They send signals to the brain that keep us balanced.

A viral infection of those canals or of the nerve that sends signals to the brain makes people feel like they’ve been put in the spin cycle of a washer.

Not only are affected people dizzy, they become nauseated and often throw up.

Symptoms of vestibular neuritis lessen in two to three days, but full recovery can take up to six or more weeks.

A cortisone drug taken within the first three days of illness can ease symptoms. And medicines like promethazine relieve dizziness and nausea, but they make some people so drowsy that they prefer the dizziness.

Put Band-Aids over your fingertips, and leave them on all night. You can do the same during the day, but it’s a bit inconvenient. In about three days, the cracks should be filling in. Continue this treatment every third or fourth night.

The same thing works for the feet.

You don’t use Band-Aids, but you do cover your feet with socks before going to sleep. Don’t apply petroleum jelly during the daytime. It might make you somewhat unsteady. It takes longer for feet to heal. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does the consumption of foods packaged or wrapped in aluminum foil pose a risk for contracting or accelerating Alzheimer’s disease? — M.E. ANSWER: The answer is no. The brains of some Alzheimer’s patients have more than the usual amount of aluminum. Some have interpreted that as indicating aluminum as a cause.

Historic Meigg Street & The National Cemetery

By Hugh Horton In 866 Congress passed the National Cemetery Act for the purpose of re-interring all Federal military personnel who died during the Civil War. In later years, free burials and markers were offered to all veterans in good standing of future wars.

To provide for the re-burials, a 20-acre plot was purchasing a mile or so Southeast of the town, a picket fence installed with gates at the North and South entrances and a superintendent's lodge near the South gate.

Except for the few hundred Federal graves from the Siege and Battle of Corinth, thousands of boxes containing remains along with stone markers were shipped to Corinth from various points from all over this part of the South.

To facilitate the transfer of the boxes and stone from the Depot

to the cemetery, a gravel road was constructed from the West end of Wick Street (near the Depot), and it followed what used to be Grant Street Southeasterly where it then connected with Meigg Street at the signal light near Rogers Super Market.

Meigg Street continues East to the cemetery and continues along the North side to the front gate.

There, the road stopped. No other roads or streets were in the vicinity.

To enhance the appearance of the road, two iron bridges spanned the creeks between the Deport and the front gate of the cemetery; one within the first few blocks of Wick Street and the other a few yards West of where Crater Street enter Meigg.

Old timers may still recall the bridge with its big iron banisters spanning a wide ditch where we pre-teens spent many happy

hours of our childhood with our sailboats and catching "crawdads."

Through the years the street's name has acquired an extra "g."

In interest of history, it might be well to revert to the name of its benefactor, Quartermaster General Montgomery Cunningham Meigs, under whose administration the road and cemetery were constructed.

The Corinth National Cemetery is situated approximately ž miles Southeast from the railroad depot in Corinth, MS. It is a point of interest to the tourist not only as a shrine of our heroic dead, but also as memorial to one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The remains of soldiers were gathered from some 15 or 20 battlefields and skirmish grounds in Corinth, Iuka, Holly Springs, Guntown and Farmington, MS

and from Parkers Crossroads, Middlebury and Brittons Lane, TN and from various scattered camps and hospitals in Tennessee

and Mississippi. The internments are from 15 different states and number over 7,000,3996 which are unknown.

The Corinth High School sophomore was inspired by his two older brothers to start playing basketball as a 5year-old. But, a heart problem resulted in Jordan getting a pacemaker when he was a secondgrader.

"I couldn't play anymore," he said. "I can't play physical sports."

But that hasn't put his love for the sport on the bench. The 5-foot-7 inch student serves as a manager for the Corinth High basketball team, and he loves to watch games on TV too.

He is also a huge Michael Jordan fan and wears the NBA legends jerseys.

To share his basketball knowledge and passion, Jordan also created his own basketball league for the children and teens who attend Easom Community Center's day camp, where he volunteers. Along with his eighthgrade neighbor Elijah, also a volunteer, he coaches kids ages 7-10 and 11-15 in all the necessary skills. There are enough children at the center to fill a team in each age group, and the day campers were happy to join up, he said. "It's going pretty good so far."

"I'm the head coach," he said, of the team, the Easom Yellowjackets. Jordan directs the older teens while Elijah leads the younger bunch. "It

feels good to teach. I love going to help at Easom."

Coaching the boys and girls, he said, is "just as much fun" as playing himself.

Jordan's working with younger children in the neighborhood inspired the basketball league. "Those younger kids came over and said 'Thank you for teaching us.'" The adults at the community also like the idea of the basketball league, he said.

The two young coaches are teaching their teams how to take charges, how to run the court, how to shoot and score and all the other techniques that make the game so much fun to watch and to play.

Jordan said he can lead his team in running plays on the court, but it's hard sometimes not to go full speed when he's showing the players how to

improve their game. "I have to take care so I don't over exert myself" which can lead to passing out, he said.

Jordan makes sure to follow the advice of his doctor.

"I'm in good health as long as I take my medicine, and doctor says I can play like I do. I can shoot around, but I can't run."

Jordan stays active and competitive. "I go bowling, and I play video games. I'm mostly an outside person."

Coaching this summer will help him when he's on the sidelines for the high school team. "This will help me be a better manager."

And, of course, learning more at the high school level will help him be a better coach next summer, Jordan said, when his basketball league starts up again.

Wynn hard at work on campaign for House District 38 seat

By Lucy Weber A relentless campaigner, Lisa Wynn is ready to be the state representative from District 38 in the Mississippi Legislature.

"My focus will be on legislation for my area," Wynn said.

The Starkville resident has a solid platform of goals she wants to achieve to benefit those who live in the House of Representatives district, which includes portions of Oktibbeha, Clay and Lowndes counties. "We need to expand the Medicaid rolls, decrease the prison population, create jobs, jobs, jobs, fully fund education and see community resources used in District 38."

Wynn, who served on the Starkville Board of Aldermen for four years, has aspired to be a part of Mississippi's lawmaking body since high school. "I always said when the time was appropriate that I would run."

Wynn's campaign for the District 38 seat in a special election two years ago was hampered greatly by a fall that left her with three broken bones in her right ankle.

As a campaigner who likes to meet voters personally by knocking on as many doors as she can, Wynn's ability to get out to do that was slowed by being on crutches.

This campaign, the ankle is fine and Wynn has already worn out one pair of shoes and is working on her second pair as she travels throughout the city and rural areas of the district to ask folks for their votes. "I am back and 100 percent Lisa," said Wynn, who is known by her signature hats. "I am never not campaigning. I make sure each week I am in each county meeting voters."

Wynn said she is seeking the office because the incumbent, who won that special election, has not been responsive to the voters' needs.

"I believe we need to hold all politicians accountable. The incumbent's voting record has not been beneficial to the community. He voted against a state lottery that would support important infrastructure needs and he voted to give $2 million to private schools."

The race will be decided in the Aug. 6 Democratic primary. There are no other party candidates on the November ballot.

"It is a tall act to fully fund education, and our present legislator is not interested in doing that," she said, adding that students deserve the state's education budget to be at its top amount. "The state spends more money on prisoners than teacher salaries."

Wynn said she supports criminal justice reform that would reduce the number of prisoners going into the system and saving the state money.

In the district, Wynn said a once proud high school, Moore, in Oktibbeha County has sat empty and unused since the consolidation of the county-city school systems.

"It could have so many purposes, and right now it's dormant. I would sponsor legislation to see it become a community resource center," she said.

Wynn, who works as a project manager for Gladney Construction, said she plans to continue to campaign tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the election to get her message across to voters. "My heart is sincere, and my intentions are pure."

Pulled Pork Is Perfect for Fourth of July My father was born and raised in Winston-Salem, N.C., the perfect place to find a delicious pulled-pork barbeque sandwich. The Piedmont triad area where he grew up is famous for its pork barbeque and highly seasoned, vinegar-based sauces. Pigs are plentiful in that area of the South, so barbeques featuring the whole pig -- split open and roasted over a hardwood charcoal fire, or using just the pork shoulder -- are popular. After the meat is cooked, it's "pulled" off the bone by hand, sliced, shredded or chopped into pieces, mixed with barbeque sauce and served on a bun.

Pork shoulders are the front leg of the pig and are fairly inexpensive cuts of meat. The shoulder includes two cuts: the Boston butt, which is a rectangular roast from the upper part of the front leg, and the picnic shoulder. The Boston butt is the cut of choice for pulled-pork sandwiches.

Select a Boston butt that has a white-fat cap and is marbled with fat throughout the meat. The fat and the collagen (the connective tissue) "baste" the meat as it melts away. The collagen also turns into simple sugars that make this typically tougher cut of meat moist, tender and flavorful as it slowly cooks.

Pulled-pork barbeque sandwiches were used to entice potential voters to attend political rallies. These flavorful sandwiches definitely have my

vote. This crockpot recipe for pulled pork is perfect for anyone who can't barbeque the traditional way. Serve the pulled pork with a scoop of coleslaw on the sandwich or on the side, along with some baked beans, corn on the cob and sweet, lemon-flavored iced tea, and you'll have the

makings of a Southern-style barbeque no matter where you live!

Barbequed Pulled-Pork Sandwiches This recipe is a great way to tenderize an inexpensive cut of meat and conserve energy by using the crockpot. The

salsa infuses the meat with flavor while it cooks, and the barbeque sauce is the perfect finish. You'll have enough pulled pork to feed a crowd, or you can freeze any leftovers for another fabulous meal!

5 pounds boneless pork butt, cut into 2-inch chunks 2 large onions, sliced 1 jar (16 ounces) Pace Chunky Salsa or Pace Pineapple Mango Chipotle Salsa 1 1/2 cups water 1 bottle (16 ounces) barbecue sauce 1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar 2 tablespoons prepared mustard 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon salt 24 hamburger buns 1. Place half the onions in the crockpot. Add the meat and then the rest of the onions.

Pour the salsa and the water

over and the pork and the onions.

2. Turn the crockpot to the HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours or on the LOW setting for 7 to 9 hours or until the pork is tender and can be shredded easily with a fork.

3. Remove the pork and onions from the crockpot and discard any of the remaining liquid and accumulated fat.

Let the meat cool slightly.

Shred the pork, using two forks. Mix together the barbeque sauce, vinegar, mustard, brown sugar and salt until well-combined.

4. Mix the shredded pork and onions with the barbeque sauce. Return the barbequed pork to the crockpot and cook on HIGH for another hour.

Serve about 1/2 cup shredded pork in each roll. Top with coleslaw, if desired. Serves 24.

HOMECOMING: A TIME TO REMEMBER

J. Moffett Walker, Retired Counselor & Author Corinthians, July brings a great time to get together to see old friends and make new ones.

Tommy, my husband of 57 years, a native of Corinth and a 1958 graduate of Easom High School, and I will be there to enjoy the many activities the committee has prepared for us.

Friday, July 5th, from 1:00 P. M. to 5:00 P. M. I will join the leaders at St. John Community Center, as requested, to greet incoming people who register.

However, I will be there with my eight books, including the new one, Daybreak, Nightfall, Life, my memoir.

The Fiesta later on Friday, July 5th with D. J. "Sugar Daddy" Owens at the Crossroads Arena Banquet Hall, on 2000 South Harper Road, I will be wearing denim and pearls while showing books.

The fun time begins for everyone with the parade on July 6th. That is especially true for the children waiting to grab a piece of candy or a balloon, thrown to them from floats and other vehicles that make up the parade. Moreover, it is important that I remind parents to keep the children safe.

Don't forget the Picnic July 6th after the parade. It will be at the Crossroads Regional Park/City Park When I see the word picnic I think about the G_O_O_D F_O_O_D! We all like to eat! I will be there also with my books.

On Saturday, July 6th beginning at 9:00 P. M. you can dance and listen to hot music from Checkmate Band of Jackson, Tennessee, at the Crossroads Arena Banquet Hall. You may desire free literature about the eight books. Not only that, but anyone getting a book will receive a free usable prize.

The annual memorial service is Sunday July 7th beginning at 3:00 P. M. at St. Mark Baptist Church, 1000 Scott Street.

Pork Tenderloin with Peach Glaze

Crunchy Deviled Eggs 4 hard-boiled eggs 2 tablespoons fat-free mayonnaise 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 1 teaspoon dried onion flakes 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1. Cut eggs in half lengthwise and remove yolks. Place yolks in a medium bowl and mash well using a fork.

Add mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, celery seed, onion flakes and parsley flakes. Mix well to combine.

2. Refill egg white halves by spooning a full tablespoon of yolk mixture into each. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

• Each serving equals: 73 calories, 5g fat, 5g protein, 2g carb., 142mg sodium, 0g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Meat

Pork tenderloin is as lean as skinless chicken breast, with only 3 grams of fat and 120 calories per 3ounce serving. Grill with fresh peaches to add health-boosting fiber, carbs and vitamins A and C. 1 lime 1/2 cup peach preserves 1 (1 1/4 pounds) pork tenderloin 2 bunches green onions 1 teaspoon olive oil 4 medium peaches, each cut in half and pitted 1. Prepare outdoor grill for cooking over medium heat. From lime, grate 1 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice.

2. Make Peach Glaze: In medium bowl, stir preserves, lime peel and juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper until blended. Spoon 1/4 cup glaze into small bowl.

3. Cut pork tenderloin crosswise in half, then cut each piece lengthwise in half. Place pork on hot grill rack; cover and cook 5 minutes. Turn pork over; brush with glaze from medium bowl. Cover and cook 5 to 6 minutes longer or until pork is browned on the outside and still slightly pink on the inside, brushing several times with glaze remaining in medium bowl.

Transfer pork to cutting board.

4. Meanwhile, toss green onions with oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper. Place green onions and peaches, cut- sides down, on same grill rack; cook 3 minutes, turning green onions over once. Transfer onions to platter. Turn peaches over and brush with glaze from small bowl; cook 3 minutes longer or until browned and tender.

Transfer to platter with green onions.

5. Slice pork and serve with peaches and green onions. Serves 4.

Is There Enough Creativity in Your Life?

Two-thirds of adults in a recent survey say they seek to use their creativity more in life, and 77 percent would rather give up their Netflix subscription for a year than their favorite creative hobby. “The scientific community knows that creativity offers huge benefits to individuals, both directly and via benefits to health and happiness,” says Mark Runco, director of Creativity Research and Programming at Southern Oregon University.

The survey also revealed the following insights: • Doctor prescribed creativity: Science has legitimized creativity as a critical component of well-being, and doctors are

increasingly prescribing creative pursuits as part of medical prescription regimens. If given the choice, 57 percent of U.S. adults would rather take up a new creative hobby than start a new medication, if assured by their doctor it would have the same health benefits.

• Handmade happiness: The majority of those surveyed love both the process of making something from scratch, as well as the joy they received from the finished project. Three in four U.S. adults currently participate in at least one creative activity, with baking, gardening, cooking (beyond everyday meals), home décor and DIY crafting being the most popular.

• Happy accidents: Success as an endgoal is increasingly being put on the backburner, as more people realize that mistakes are just a natural part of the creative journey. Indeed, 75 percent of those surveyed say making a mistake doesn’t take away from their enjoyment in what they’re creating.

• Parents on board: Seventy-seven percent of parents want their children to have more opportunities to be creative than they did when they were young. In thinking about their future, 79 percent would rather their children make just enough to get by in a creative job that they love, over making lots of money in a job they aren’t passionate about. Unfortunately, in parents’ eyes, today’s education system doesn’t place enough emphasis on creativity, with 61 percent agreeing that public education lacks creative arts focus and 72 percent saying that standardized test scores are prioritized more than creative thinking.

• Ego Booster: Participation in creative activities also appears to have a positive influence on adults’ perceptions of themselves. Those who participate in creative activities are more likely than those who don’t to describe themselves as optimistic, happy, passionate and joyful.
