Betts brings a world of experience to lead Macedonia MB Church

Dr. Eric Betts

By Lucy Weber A missionary who has traveled the world, Dr. Eric Betts has found his church home in the pulpit of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Corinth. Betts started leading the church, which celebrated its centennial last year, on Easter Sunday this year. He and his wife of 21 years, Trina, live with their three children in Florence, Ala. Betts also serves the Athens State University Religious Studies program, teaching on leadership, strengths finding, interfaith relationships and ethics. "In my life I've realized that everything happens for a reason. What you went through in the past is preparing you for what you do right now," he said. "When you get outside your area, you expand and see the world through different lenses. My traveling prepared me for Macedonia."

Betts' missionary work took him to Betts to Botswana, Barbados, Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Bermuda, Malaysia, New Zealand, France, Rome and Germany. In Uganda, Betts said stayed with people living with no electricity and no running water but they showed their hospitality over and over again. "It helped me get my priorities together. That teaches you to appreciate what you have and when you're blessed." Macedonia MB Church has a warm and welcoming congregation, Betts said. "One of the things that stand out to me is that the doors are open to grieving families. Macedonia reaches out to grieving families, even if they're not a member of the church. We have a very strong benevolent ministry - I've never seen one on that see BETTS pg 4
