Alex Marshall’s Journey From the Ball Fields to the NFL
By Justice Reid Not every path to the National Football League begins on the football field. For Corinth High School graduate Austin Marshall, the road to the NFL was built through hard work, technology, preparation, and a passion for sports. Rather than pursuing a career as a player, Marshall discovered that he could make an impact on the game from behind the scenes. Today, he is entering his sixth season with the Baltimore Ravens, working as a member of the team’s video department. Marshall’s journey began in Corinth, where he grew up with his parents, Anthony and Kelly Marshall, and his brother, Alex Marshall. The family spent about 13 years living in the Shady Grove community before moving into the city limits of Corinth. always loved sports and wanted to continue to work in sports,” he said. That competitive spirit continues today. Marshall, his father, and his brother have taken up golf as a hobby, although Marshall jokingly points out that the competition has been somewhat one-sided. “Even though they haven’t beat me in a round in a year or two, we still call it a competition,” he said. Some dreams begin on a neighborhood ball field. For Alex Marshall, that dream began in Corinth, Mississippi, where family, friendship, baseball, and a love for sports helped shape a journey that would eventually lead him to the National Football League.Today, Marshall is living a dream that once seemed far away. Now in his second year with the Atlanta Falcons, he is building a career in professional football—not as a player, but as part of the team working behind the scenes. His journey is a reminder that sometimes achieving a dream requires taking a different route. Marshall describes growing up in Corinth as an awesome experience filled with family, friends, sports, and the outdoors. “I love the outdoors, and my
family is the reason for that,” he said. Some of his favorite childhood memories include playing backyard football, travel baseball, rabbit hunting, fishing, and riding bicycles through the Tree Streets with friends. Those experiences helped shape his appreciation for family, friendship, and an active lifestyle. Marshall attended Corinth High School, where he developed friendships that have lasted well beyond graduation. “High school brought me my closest friends that I talk to almost every day,” he said. “It showed me the power of friendship.” Marshall discovered his love for baseball at an early age. His family taught him how to throw and catch, while watching his brother play encouraged him to continue pursuing the sport. He eventually played baseball
throughout his youth and for two years in college. Although baseball did not ultimately become his professional career, the sport provided lessons that continue to influence him today. Marshall said his coaches were extremely hard on him because they wanted him to become the best player and person possible. “They gave me leadership skills and really showed me what being a team really meant,” he said. Those lessons would later become valuable as he transitioned from playing sports to working in sports. Marshall credits his parents with playing an important role in both his athletic and academic development. They supported his interests, provided him with the equipment he needed, and encouraged him whether he was performing well or struggling. “They always made sure I was having fun no matter how good or bad I was doing at the time,” he said. “They pushed me to have good grades and be great in the classroom.” His parents also taught him a lesson that extends far beyond sports—to treat people with kindness. “They’ve shown me to be nice to whoever talks to me,” Marshall said. “Someone else may be having a bad day and I could be the one who brightens it up.” See ALEX.....pg 4
