M

any freshmen and transfer students come to Columbia from suburban or rural backgrounds. For some, the combination of grit and glamour Chicago offers can initially be a shock. For others, the Windy City is just one of many urban areas they have visited or called home.

However, even for young people like myself— who moved to campus from the nearby suburbs— adjusting to city life is an experience that can be just as confusing as it is rewarding. Luckily, Columbia students have countless resources at their disposal to help make their transition as smooth as possible.

The first major lesson I learned when I moved to Chicago was that the part of the city I had visited throughout my life—the Loop—was just one small portion of the Chicagoland area.

I had no idea until shortly before the big move that the city encompassed a staggering 77 neighborhoods, each with its own culture and personality.

Exploring these neighborhoods required another lesson: learning how to use public transportation.

Columbia students benefit from access to Ventra U-Passes, which allow them to take unlimited rides on CTA buses and trains during the academic year.

to stumble upon.

Students who live on campus may not always need to travel out of the South Loop to explore, though. Columbia’s non-traditional campus spans several city blocks, encouraging newcomers to visit local shops and restaurants between classes.

Aside from offering a lively and inspiring campus environment, Columbia also provides many opportunities throughout the year for students to showcase their artistic work.

Participating in events like Biggest Mouth, Columbia’s annual end-of-the-year event that highlights the college’s musical talent, or Manifest, the college’s annual urban arts festival that celebrates student work, allows students to receive real-world critiques and praise for their dedication and creativity.

While you are getting acquainted with the city’s grid layout and its noteworthy museums, music venues and sporting facilities, remember that embarking on your college journey means profiting from a blank slate. Do things you’ve never done before, and do not feel limited by any expectations your high school friends and teachers might have for you. As a freshman or transfer student, you can create and set new expectations for yourself.

Fall in love with crafts you’ve never tried before or continue to study subjects you’re already passionate about. Do not worry about fitting into a mold because at Columbia, you don’t have to.

The majority of college students do not get to take classes in which their teachers know their name and take time to speak with them on an individual basis.

Columbia’s small class sizes allow professors and students to get to know each other on a more personal level than one might experience at a typical state school. This means that those students who hone their talent are usually able to build relationships with their professors that can lead to real networking opportunities, general career advice and even potential jobs years down the line.

Not every Columbia graduate will say they would do it over again the same way, but it’s up to you to make your time and money spent at Columbia worthwhile. Take in the bustling energy of the city that surrounds you and absorb as much new information and creative fuel as you can along the way. WHILE MOST COLLEGES welcome stu-

dents with pep rallies or homecoming football games, Columbia’s initiation is a little less traditional.

Columbia’s group of approximately 2,000 new students will gather on Sept. 4 at Grant Park for this year’s New Student Convocation. Every year, the welcoming event unites new students by inviting them to chant “Hell yeah!” along with one of the college’s top administrators. To many, being surrounded by students as they yell and curse might be offensive, but to Mark Kelly, vice president of Student Success, the “Hell Yeah Liturgy” is a beloved tradition.

“Convocation is a glorious moment for our college community because we assemble all of our new students— freshman, transfer and graduate students—who are joining the Columbia

community [along] with faculty, student leaders and organizations and college leaders to welcome them, celebrate their arrival and inspire them,” Kelly said.

The traditional “Hell Yeah Liturgy” involves Kelly introducing the nine principles of student success to new students and encouraging them to signify acceptance of each one by yelling, “Hell yeah!”

The principles include forming a creative crew, connecting with faculty, embracing diversity, exploring the campus, exploring the city, living intellectually, staying strong, building a body of work and focusing on career development.

“The ‘Hell Yeah Liturgy’ is this special moment of ritual where [new students] officially become part of [Columbia] and the weight of this incredible new creative talent entering the college [becomes] palpable to us,” Kelly said. “We want our students to embrace those principles and make them their own, understanding the ideas and values that drive how we

educate our students. These are all principles that are very dear to Columbia, and the ‘Hell Yeah Liturgy’ is [meant] to bring a sense of performance and playfulness to that moment.”

According to Sheila Carter, executive director of Student Engagement & Culture, Convocation will feature various activities throughout the day aimed at engaging new students with the college.

“The program will feature welcomes from our Faculty Senate President, [Greg Foster-Rice], and a special message from President [and CEO Kwang-Wu] Kim,” Carter said. “After the program, there will be music, a new student expo featuring campus resources, student organizations, alumni, games, activities and food.”

One of the largest student gatherings held before the semester begins, Convocation is part of the college’s annual “Welcome Week,” a seven-day events series designed to familiarize students with the college and the city leading

up to the first day of classes on Sept. 8.

“Welcome Week” includes a variety of activities ranging from tours of campus facilities to various neighborhood explorations and is a period during which new students can immerse themselves in the community, according to Kelly.

Formerly known as the two-week long “Weeks of Welcome,” the period was condensed to serve as the kickoff to a new, semester-long orientation program known as the First-Semester Experience, Kelly said.

“We will have an extended orientation process through the whole first semester with our new ‘Big Chicago’ courses and ‘New Student Commons’ class, so we’ll be working with freshmen on campus throughout the whole semester,” Kelly said. “One way of thinking about it is ‘Weeks of Welcome’ now become an entire semester of new student activities.” jwittich@chroniclemail.com ORIENTATION GUIDE

acclimated to their new surroundings at Columbia, they will also learn who the college’s higher-ups are and how certain individuals will impact their academic experience.

During the Fall 2015 Semester, President and CEO Kwang-Wu Kim will be one of many people working behind the scenes to make new students’ introduction to campus as smooth as possible.

The Chronicle spoke with Kim about the freshman year experience, his advice to commuter students and what new students need to understand about the college’s Strategic Plan.

What are you most looking forward to this academic year?

In year one, my primary focus was learning the place as well as I could, but also there were a lot of changes I needed to make in the leadership at the college, so I was very focused on that.

This past year was all about leading the development of the Strategic Plan. Those two things [are] never done, but most of the fundamental pieces are in place.

What I’m really excited about now is helping to guide some of the work to make certain pieces of the plan come alive. [This year] has a lot to do with the parts of the plan that are about connecting to the larger world, but also in-house examining the educational experience for our students and figuring out what we need to do to improve it. One other thing I’d say is this fall we’ll be really moving forward with the conversation about developing a new student center.

I’m very excited about that.

THE CHRONICLE: What should new students know about you as their president?

KWANG-WU KIM: I came to Columbia College Chicago because of the students. I feel like at some level I understand who our students are because—it may not look to our students like it’s true—but I feel like some aspect of who they are and what they’re trying to accomplish in their lives is part of who I am, too. I want students to know what I’m constantly thinking about is “What does the education have to look like to be truly valuable for our students?”

That’s what drives me.

What are your tips for a successful freshman year?

It all comes down to being willing to engage with lots of people. I really think the key as a new student is—in whatever way fits your own personality—to always be sort of stepping forward, to be asking the question, to be meeting someone new...to have that feeling when you see there’s a door and you’re not sure [what’s behind it], so you just open it. I felt like as an undergrad, I didn’t do that enough. I think about this a lot even though that was a long time ago.

my undergrad situation, I would have been much more that way, because there’s nothing to lose, right? You may come here thinking you know exactly what you want to study, but it’s really important to stretch yourself and try some things. You may discover there’s something else that’s actually much more compelling to you than what you thought you wanted to do, and you only get there by experimenting.

Do you have any advice for commuter students trying to get involved on campus?

For our commuters, the key to

involvement is to build it into your schedule. If you live on campus, it can be a little bit more spontaneous. I use my own calendar as an example. A lot of times people ask, “What does the president do all day?” and a lot of my work is actually sitting in meetings with people.

If I didn’t think about it carefully, literally, I would be in meetings with people all day, every day. I have to write; I have to think, so I block out a little bit of time in my schedule to do that kind of work.

Otherwise, what will happen is it’ll get pushed to the end of the day when I go home. Similar probably for a commuter,

It means they’ve come to a school that’s thinking about the present but also thinking about the future. [We are] asking the question, “What are all the things that we need to keep improving so that the education keeps getting better and better?” I hope that’s exciting because I don’t think students should have to worry about it too much. We want our students focused on their experience while in the background we’re just constantly trying to make it better. WHILE ATTENDING COLUMBIA,

most students will grow and learn to be better artists, citizens and leaders thanks to the various faculty and resources Columbia offers. However, students are not the only ones who will be improving—Columbia is set to grow as an institution as well.

Incoming students for the 2015–2016 academic year will enter the college as it begins to implement its new Strategic Plan, a 40-page document outlining Columbia’s goals for the next five years.

The plan calls for revised curricula, enhanced learning opportunities and the creation of a central campus center housing all student services.

“There are a lot of bold things in this plan,” said President and CEO Kwang-Wu

Kim. “I’m hopeful because it calls [for] many big things that we need to do to push our college to the next level.”

The plan, which is accessible through the college’s website, is divided into six main goals: Student Success; A 21st Century Curriculum; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Community Engagement; Optimizing Enrollment; and Aligning Resources with Goals.

“Underlying much of what is in the plan is our desire to improve student success,” said Stan Wearden, senior vice president and provost. “To me, this comes down to two essentials. A successful student is one who completes a degree in as timely a manner as possible and leaves the college prepared for a lifetime of rewarding employment.”

Feedback from the college community was solicited during all steps of drafting the Strategic Plan. In the Fall

2014 Semester, several collegewide forums allowed students, staff, faculty and alumni to voice their ideas, concerns and questions regarding each section of the plan. Additional feedback was collected online before drafting the plan and after sharing it publicly online.

“I’m enthusiastic that the college has embraced the process,” Kim said. “I understand we’re moving fast, but my sense is that people get why. We’re not going to abandon the idea that we’ve got to maintain an open dialogue [with the college] about what we’re doing.”

According to Wearden, the college will continue seeking community involvement during the plan’s implementation.

Students can expect to see several

objectives outlined in the plan already materializing during the 2015–2016 academic year, such as updated college advising services, a newly created Declaration of Major process and a revamped first-year experience.

Although the Strategic Plan calls for many large changes to occur throughout the next few years, Dick Kiphart, chair of the board of trustees, said he is confident it will improve the college experience for students.

“The Strategic Plan is a move that will enhance students’ educational experience,” Kiphart said. “It will provide an education for the future.” jwittich@chroniclemail.com

COLUMBIA’S CAMPUS IS located in the

heart of the Chicago Transit Authority system, and most riders inevitably develop a love-hate relationship with the CTA. It is easier to get around the city and get to class on time by hopping on a train or a bus, but it can also become an annoyance when you are being panhandled or having to listen to the death metal playlist the person

Whether you are waiting for the bus or riding the train, make sure you are always aware of those around you. Phones, purses, groceries and other carry-ons are frequently stolen on public transit. Keep valuables out of sight and always hold on to purses or backpacks. If someone is harassing you or makes you feel uncomfortable, alert the CTA operator, inform a security officer or relocate to another train car.

sitting next to you is blasting at the maximum volume.

Chicagoans of ranging personalities often reside on the CTA trains and have no problem making your trip uncomfortable or problematic. You will hear an array of CTA horror stories about robberies and run-of-the-mill sightings of crazy people. Many of such nuisances are unavoidable. However, you can hope for a smoother ride by following some simple steps and practicing proper CTA etiquette.

3. DON’T TALK BACK

Panhandlers will sit next to you and tell you their whole life story hoping you will donate a dollar, and when you don’t give them money, things could become hostile. The worst thing to do in this situation is acknowledge them and conduct a conversation. Keep a pair of headphones or sunglasses around so you can tune them out when needed and do not hesitate to switch train cars.

4. TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?

The CTA can be especially handy after hitting the bars in Wrigleyville with friends. However, bringing the party from the bar to the train is not a wise choice. Just because you’re having fun at 2 a.m. does not mean your fellow train passengers want to join in on your shenanigans. The report, published Oct. 24

by AFSCME Council 31, the union representing the city’s mental health employees, shows that 5,337 patients were being treated by the city-operated clinics before the closings. By July, the Chicago Department of Public Health reported 3,282 active mental health cases but could only account for the whereabouts of 2,798 of those patients, despite its promise to monitor everyone impacted by the closings, according to the report.

The 2,055 patients who left CDPH-operated clinics between the time of the closings and July were transferred to private clinics.

However, the 484 who remain unaccounted for have raised concerns.

The consequences of not having term limits is very apparent in the city’s mayoral history. The Daley bined 43 years. It was during those years that the Daleys gathered enough political standing to exert a large amount of influence over the council because the mayor’s power has more to do with connections and money than elected authority.

Term limits could return Chicago to its intended form of a strong legislative government.

On the other hand, term limits for aldermen, who also have no restrictions on how long they may serve, would be detrimental to their responsibility. Aldermen are involved in administrative duties in their wards, such as zoning, permits and 311 calls, alongside their political duties in the City Council.

It is beneficial for residents to es-

tablish a close relationship with aldermen through continued service because the alderman runs much of the ward’s day-to-day business.

Term limits are only one piece of election reform, though. Elected redrawing of their own district boundaries, which, as Chicago saw in 2012, can become very political.

Campaign finance reform could eliminate some of the problematic political donations made by people hoping to buy favors or city jobs from aldermen. Term limits are not a panacea for problems with city government and should be considered as part of a broad discussion concerning elections.

It might sound nice to impose term limits to get rid of career politicians, but some positions are suited for long tenures, such as those of aldermen. Limitation on

The $6.5 billion budget, which comes to $8 billion when grant funding is added, is the second Emanuel has drafted since he took schools and on structural reform among the city’s departments.

“We need to ensure that we are

not only righting our fiscal ship, but [that] we are making the tough choices,” Emanuel said. “We must be investing in our children, improving the quality of our neighborhoods, providing our small businesses with a leg up and promoting safety in Chicago.”

Proponents of the budget were supportive of the lack of a tax increase. Alderman Carrie Austin (34) guided the discussion among council members leading up to the meeting. She said this budget will help people in Chicago who

are struggling.

“We need to ensure low [tax] rates for Chicago residents,” Austin said. “Our financial team successfully tackled a $369 million financial shortfall. We did this through sound management and financial techniques that focused on health care, savings, improved debt collection and revenue growth reforms.”

The three aldermen who voted against the budget were Bob Fioretti (2), Scott Waguespack (32) and John Arena (45).

The dissenting members orga-

nized a “progressive caucus” to give the public an opportunity to provide input on the budget. The opposing aldermen disagreed with parts of the budget that support privatizing public services such as oversight of water reclamation.

“This budget is a statement of who we are, and the closing of the $369 million budget gap comes at the expense of good, middle-class jobs,” Fioretti said.

Emanuel said improving early childhood education and after-school programs, along with

providing students with eye examinations, are key issues the budget addresses.

Unlike last year’s budget, which increased taxes and implemented several new fees and fines, the 2013 budget does not include any new taxes or tax increases, Emanuel said. However, water and sewer fees and fines are set to increase because of the long-term lease of the city’s meter system, which was approved by former Mayor

Student groups allowed to discriminate A&C

tions at Columbia must include a non-discrimination statement in their constitutions, but not all colleges have this policy. A recent law in Virginia allows student groups at public institutions to discriminate in membership policies and still receive funds from the college, and other states are considering implementing this policy as well.

The Student Group Protection Act, signed into law March 22

by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), gives political and religious student groups the right to deny membership to students who aren’t “committed to that mission,” wording that narrowly avoids mentioning groups protected by federal law from discrimination.

The law is worded so it can allow a religious student group to ban gay and lesbian members because their sexuality isn’t in line with the group’s mission. Although colleges are allowed to reject an application

for a student group, a group cannot be punished for discriminatory practices under this law.

State Sen. Mark Obenshain (R–Va), who proposed the law, defended it by saying that a Democratic student group shouldn’t have to accept Republican members, but he fails to address why a Republican would ever want to join a liberal student group. The likely assumption is that such a person would be attempting to work against the goals of that group, but there are actually a lot of students who could learn by participating in campus organizations outside their belief systems.

The idea that such a bill is for the protection of student groups is based on the implausible idea that people would join student groups just to ruin them. The consequences of the law—actual discrimination against people based on sexual orientation—are too great

to justify the supposed goal. Public college funding shouldn’t be used for organizations that disallow people on the basis of their identity.

There’s nothing wrong with a student organization that is meant for a certain group of people, such as Columbia’s Campus Crusade for Christ or Students for Justice in Palestine, and at many colleges, these groups are still all-inclusive. even benefit all involved by encouraging well-rounded discourse.

Legislators in Iowa are attempting to pass a similar law, according to a March 27 press release from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. It is troubling that state lawmakers are allowing students to entrench themselves in their own ideas when college is supposed to widen one’s horizons.

Laws like Virginia’s Student Group Protection Act squander this facet of college education.

While Ocean is the most prominent emcee to admit same-sex orientation, he is such as the ’90s group Rainbow Flava, have been making music since the genre’s inception under the umbrella term “homo-hop,” or queer hip-hop, a style of music often containing aggressively pro-gay lyrics that directly confront the perceived homophobia of mainstream rap.

Juba Kalamka has been rapping since 1988 and worked with multiple music groups in Chicago in the early ’90s. Kalamka even-

tually became fed up with his personal dishonesty regarding his sexuality, which drove him to move to San Francisco in 2000 where he formed the homo-hop group Deep Dickollective, or DDC, with Tim’m West and Phillip Atiba Goff.

“I got to a point, I was kind of on the edge of coming out; I was married, had a kid,” Kalamka said. “I really didn’t feel like I had a space to talk about the stuff that was going on with me.”

Kalamka explained that DDC did not set out to change popular opinion about homo-hop, but to poke fun at the lack of recognition of the genre.

“We’re really doing some parodic black theater combined with hip-hop and poetry,” Kalamka said. “Even when I was doing DDC, there was no point at which I harbored any notion of that particular project becoming some kind of mainstream phenomenon. That wasn’t my intent.”

Eventually, DDC became a serious, sociallyconscious rap collective that helped pave the way for future queer hip-hop artists by directly addressing homophobia, racism and sexism.

Kalamka helped produce PeaceOut WORLD, the 2001-2007 and gathered known and unknown LGBT rappers and disc jockeys from around the world.

Kalamka said the queer hip-hop genre has since become more mainstream, primarily because some LGBT emcees aren’t trying to make a statement. They strive for fame and success just like anyone pursuing a career, he said.

“I think I was a little naive and disappointed,” he said. “I had this idea that

there were people who were participating in [homo-hop] for more than just, ‘I happen to be queer, and I’m experiencing this homophobia.’”

As an openly gay artist, Kalamka said he is aware of many record labels’ practice of tricking artists into believing they will be able to be true to themselves and then forcing them to conform to mainstream expectations once they’re signed.

“This is about money,” Kalamka said. “If you’ve got $50 and the person who signed you has $50 million, who has the power in that setup?”

Tessa Hall, assistant program director of music for Clear Channel Communications and a radio host at Washington D.C. station, HOT 99.5, said introducing anything not impossible.

Hall said much of the music considered for radio is provided by major record labels that have groomed their stable of artists to appeal to the mass market.

Some were gangbangers while others sold drugs. Some were reputedly wife beaters, killers, robbers and thieves. But the last thing one would expect from such a ruthless genre is homosexuality.

Hip-hop is among the last forms of artistic expression where homophobia is not only accepted, but brazenly encouraged.

The phrase “no homo” is a common slang term sprinkled throughout hip-hop culture meant to clear any doubt that a man is gay.

But the red-blooded world of hip-hop was

I was in a rap group, and all I desperately wanted was to be accepted. But I came to the conclusion that no matter how good I was, I was still gay, so it didn’t really matter.

Straight people in hip-hop really don’t want to have anything to do with gay people for the most part. Until recently, there’s been major association issues.”

Cazwell said he paradoxically began to create a name for himself once he bowed to the industry’s unwritten rules against homosexuality and left the hip-hop scene altogether.

After performing as an opening act for Lady Gaga, Cazwell was featured on her no. 1 hit, “Just Dance” in 2009. In August 2010, Cazwell released the song “Ice Cream Truck,” and its homoerotic music video went viral with more than 1 million views on YouTube in one week. Cazwell now holds a prominent place in the dance/club scene and performs in clubs worldwide.

“Rather than getting a culture to accept me, I just created my own scene and my own sound and had people come to me,” he said.

“I actually wasn’t expecting [the widespread success], which is unusual because I’m always expecting to be a huge hit. But sometimes you come up with really great things if you’re in the mindset that you don’t care what anyone thinks.”

Other LGBT artists say they’ve seen a shift in the industry. Lashunda Nicole Flowers, frontwoman of the lesbian hip-hop group Yo! Majesty, said most mainstream hip-hop is simply stolen from underground musicians.

“Mark my words, this Frank Ocean guy came out, and we’re gonna start seeing a lot more of these artists come out

of the closet,” said Flowers, who is better known as Shunda K. “Being gay is popular now. It just shows how fake all these motherf-----s were.”

Yo! Majesty gained a following after playing at the South by Southwest Music Festival in 2007, collaborating with producers such as Basement Jaxx and touring with Peaches, Gossip and the Brazilian new wave group CSS. Combining eyebrowraising lyrics with hip-hop, hard rock, gospel and electronic elements, Yo! Majesty harnessed a sound that was brand new to the genre.

Shunda K said she struggled with her own sexuality throughout her career. She describes herself as a devout Christian she also understands the industry’s power in pressuring artists to pretend they are something they aren’t in order to increase their level of fame, even if that means faking heterosexuality.

“The fans have no idea these artists are faking it to make it,” Shunda K said. “They just take their word and run with it. They’re just faking themselves for the purpose of selling records or for entertainment, but behind closed doors they’re boo’d up with the same sex.”

Shunda K said Yo! Majesty’s fanbase exploded once she was true to herself and that her proudest achievement—aside from having 30,000 fans screaming her lyrics at a concert—has been making an impact on her fans and encouraging them to be themselves.

“After Yo! Majesty shows, some people come up to us in tears,” she said, “Like, ‘Oh my God!

You don’t know how much you’ve impacted my life. Just because I’m gay or just because I’m a minority or a nobody, according to society, seeing you onstage tonight just made all that s--- go out the door.’ Being able to show integrity just to be successful is what it’s all about.”

Yo! Majesty recently regrouped after a long hiatus and hopes to release a single within the next year. Shunda K said she has different values in mind this time around after witnessing record labels’ control of the industry.

“Now my career is not about how much money I make, and having the fanciest cars and the best looking girls,” she said. “Now I’m going to really give you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. My eyes are wide open. I’m not being programmed to be controlled by the masters that be—the puppet masters.”

unsuccessful contract negotiations between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools, the teachers commenced striking Sept. 10.

Teachers spent the duration of the week picketing against the school board’s contract proposal, crease over the course of four years.

As a result of the strike, approximately 350,000 CPS students were to accommodate the large number of displaced children, CPS implemented a “Children First” contingency plan. The plan kept 144 CPS buildings open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

AS CITY OFFICIALS seek to improve energy and emissions policies downtown, O’Hare International Airport is setting its own national and international benchmarks for environmental consciousness.

At the fifth annual Airports Going Green Conference, held Nov. 5–7 at the Westin River North Hotel, 320 N. Dearborn St., O’Hare was recognized for its promotion of clean energy use and its plan to implement energy-efficient cargo lines.

During the conference, Mayor Rahm Emanuel praised the city and the airport, which he said is currently the second busiest in the country and leads the way in sustainability for airports both nationally and internationally.

“Going green used to simply be an afterthought,” Emanuel said. “It has become integrated into everything we do here in Chicago and at O’Hare. We have an opportunity to lead by example, not only for the going-green movement but also for the world.”

At the conference, Emanuel outlined plans to install solar panels on the roof of the air port, build an alternate fuel station for ground vehicles and switch all airport vehicles to hybrids.

The airport has already established an aeroponic urban garden that recycles the water it uses and grows vegetables for use in O’Hare’s restaurants. The airport is also the location of the FedEx World Service Center and Administration Building, home of the largest green roof of any airport in the country, which has reduced energy costs by 14 percent, Emanuel said. In addition, he said the airport is using 25 goats to graze on overgrown grass areas.

Emanuel emphasized the importance of energy sustainability and job creation as driving factors behind the green agenda, adding that job growth and environmental consciousness go hand in hand.

phers and editors fled to New York City Feb. 7–14 for the biggest bi-annual American event in fashion. An almost religious assembly, the Fall 2013 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was the center for a selection of the world’s most talked about fashion designers to present their latest collections. Magneto Ebony is part of the ballroom scene, a black underground subculture in which LGBT and straight competitors perform or “walk” in several themed categories—including Realness with a Twist and Executive Realness—with the goal of winning a trophy and cash prize, according to Marlon M. Bailey, assistant professor of gender and American studies at Indiana University Bloomington and author of “Butch Queens Up in Pumps,” a comprehensive examination of Detroit’s ballroom culture in which he once competed. “[At the ball], people can perform as whatever gender they want, suggesting that gender is not something inherent or biological,” Bailey said. “[Gender] is something we do, as opposed to who we are. Magneto Ebony said the ballroom scene is divided into the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf-Coast, South and Midwest regions, and the largest communities are in New York City, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Detroit and Chicago.

Chicago’s local ballroom community, which initially began as a celebration of sexuality similar to the scene in New York City, has grown into one of the nation’s largest, after East Coast ballroom members moved the tradition to the Midwest years ago, said Adonis Escada, a professional ballroom commentator.

Escada said the Chicago ballroom scene is uniquely built around family values, while New York competitors take no prisoners and favor a strict, business-like approach to their competitions.

Magneto Ebony said. “We really consider each other to be our family.”

With a panel of six to nine judges, a DJ and a carefully-selected commentator to guide the competition, each ball, Bailey said, is divided into an organized gender system of six general categories that have no meaning in the outside world—Butch Queens, Butch Queens Dressed categories in which participants compete, such as Realness and Runway, Bailey said.

He said most competitors perform in the Butch Queen category, which is a ballroom label for gay men. Butch Queen Dressed in Drag, however, is a gay man who wears women’s clothing solely for the purpose of competing at the ball. Costumes for this category range from everyday street wear to dramatic, runway-inspired looks. Bailey said the Realness categories are designed to portray “normal

Since joining the scene in 2003, Balenciaga said he has become “legendary” in his category of Schoolboy Realness, meaning he is a trendsetter within the ballroom scene.

However, Escada said gaining ballroom status has become less about the craft than it has been in years past. He said the community is now 90 percent politics and 10 percent talent, and it seems to rely less on perfecting a performance and more on social connections within the scene. While it used to take nearly a decade to rise to legendary status, he said people are now gaining the title within only two years simply because of favoritism.

Vogueing was made famous by Madonna in the ’90s, Bailey said.

But, despite using real Harlem ballroom members in her music video for “Vogue,” Bailey said the public didn’t make the connection that there was an entire underground community behind the choreography that has now expanded worldwide.

Bailey said the American public has been blind to the ballroom scene for years because of poor literary and media documentation.

“The nature of the ballroom has changed from being about creativity and a love of the art to being more about controlling [who wins] through personal relationships.”

Bailey explained ballroom houses aren’t physical buildings but rather who not only provide emotional comfort but also help the house prepare for ballroom competitions against other houses, he said.

“We bond together, eat together, travel together and shop together—we do pretty much everything together,” Magneto Ebony said. “[It alence of HIV in the black LGBT community, Bailey said. With such little coverage, he said outsiders have developed serious misconceptions about what happens at a ball, especially with the release of “Paris is Burning,” a 1990 documentary on New York’s ballroom culture in the ’80s.

Escada said a triumphant moment in ballroom history was when East Coast dance group “Vogue Evolution” competed on America’s Best Dance Crew in 2009, which he said showed the public what ballroom participants are physically and creatively capable of.

NEW STUDENTS HAVE many responsi-

bilities to manage as they settle into their new college homes. Between organizing your move-in date, color coordinating your new bedroom and choosing which “Welcome Week” events to attend, figuring out how to pay for your time at Columbia might be a bit overwhelming.

However, the college’s Office of Student Financial Services is here to guide new and continuing students through the process of understanding all things financial aid.

The Chronicle spoke with Cynthia Grunden, assistant vice president of Student Financial Services, regarding incoming students’ most frequently asked questions when it comes to loans, payment plans and refunds.

What is the Federal Stafford Loan and what is the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized loans?

Federal Stafford Loans are educational loans for students funded by the federal government. To receive a Stafford Loan, a student must be attending at least halftime. Stafford Loans do not require a credit check, and repayment on the loans begins six months after graduation or dropping below half-time enrollment. Students can opt to pay their loans before graduation, which will help them save money on interest. While a student is enrolled at least half-time, the government pays the student’s interest on a subsidized loan. An unsubsidized loan starts to accrue interest at the time it is disbursed. Eligibility for a subsidized loan is based on financial need.

THE CHRONICLE: What are the most common ways students pay for college?

How can students benefit from pursuing a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan? What types of students are eligible for this type of loan?

CYNTHIA GRUNDEN: Students use many methods to pay for college, including federal and state grants, federal loans, institutional scholarships, third-party payments, Veteran’s benefits and payment plans. Most students use more than one payment method within a semester or academic year.

A Parent PLUS Loan is a loan that a parent of a dependent undergraduate borrows to help the student cover educational costs. The loan is funded by the federal government and requires a credit check of the parent borrower.

The payment plan requires the authorized payer to sign an agreement authorizing a third-party to process a down payment, non-refundable payment plan fee and monthly installments on behalf of the college. ASIDE FROM THE tens of thousands of

dollars students and parents invest in a college education, it seems that textbook costs are continuing to rise, making purchasing class materials almost as stressful as securing financial aid and incurring student loans. However, many resources exist to help mitigate this problem and make preparing for the semester a less stressful venture. While campus bookstores are considered the traditional source of textbooks, they do not always offer the most affordable ones. We have compiled some handy— and cost effective—tools for finding books at bargain prices. Especially when working with a budget.

1. Chegg: This academic company specializes in offering online textbook and e-book rentals while highlighting available scholarships and internships.

The website is geared toward helping college students organize their course materials and professional resources, as well as saving up to 90 percent on used textbook rentals. The best part of the deal is that you can use the same box your books arrived in to mail the textbooks back to Chegg for free.

2. Campusbooks.com: This site functions as a price comparison engine.

Once your professors have uploaded the required textbooks on OASIS, simply search those titles or their ISBN numbers to find the cheapest available options to rent or buy new and used books or digital versions.

3. Textbooks.com: Textbooks.com allows students to search for their books by ISBN number or title to find the most affordable new or used version. The site also offers free shipping on orders over $25, which can limit the overall cost of textbooks per semester.

The site claims that all textbooks are hand-inspected for quality to ensure that students won’t run into missing pages or unrecognizably marked up chapters midway through the semester.

4. Amazon: Although the quality of the textbooks can be questionable at times, especially because there is no guarantee of hand-inspections, Amazon is a great resource for finding affordable textbooks when your wallet is hurting.

The site claims that students can save up to 90 percent on used textbooks and 40 percent on new books.

THE SOUNDS OF Chicago-based groove

band Woo Park’s debut album, Smokes, are hard to classify. Warm, bobbing bass lines and swirls of bluesy electric guitar add to the album’s jazzy feel, but everchanging synths and assorted drumming styles make the intricate workings of Woo Park stand out with vigor.

With two Columbia alumni as band members, Parker Grogan (bass) and Emily Nichols (vocals), the band’s success is growing. Along with its other three members—Christian Zwit (keyboard), Luke Sangerman (drums) and Brian Sanborn (guitar)—Woo Park has landed many major gigs, including their March performance at the South

by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

The Chronicle spoke with keyboardist Zwit about the band’s neo-soul

beginnings, jamming out and how Woo Park got its name.

THE CHRONICLE: Where does the band’s name come from?

CHRISTIAN ZWIT: [In] my old band we used to have pizza at our shows.

Everyone loved it because not only were we playing music, but they could also come and there’d be pizza. My thought was [that] we should name our band

something that everyone likes. I thought of this friend named Woo Park. He’s everyone’s favorite person, so we named the band Woo Park.

How was performing on FreQ Out? It went very well. Our songs usually have big solos and are extended, [but] we [only] had a four-minute window, so we had to arrange the music so it would fit, [and] that was a cool [experience].

How has your sound evolved?

Initially, it was very hip-hop neosoul. But as we all individually grew as musicians, we [all had] very different musical influences. No one could write a part [of a song] that the other person would’ve thought of because of all our different influences. It’s definitely come a long way in the past year.

Our music is dramatically changing all the time.

What was it like releasing your first EP? It was a long process. We went in [to the studio] not as prepared as we could’ve been, so the songs grew a lot from our initial intentions. Next time we’ll be more prepared, but it was interesting that the songs grew and came together over the couple months that it took to make the EP. AFTER A LONG day of work, I often

find myself struggling between a hankering for pizza and a yearning for mac ’n’ cheese. But why choose just one? Start making this carb-filled delight by preheating the oven to 425 F. Next, bring a large pot of water to a boil and add in 2 cups of elbow macaroni so it can cook as you prepare the cheeses and spices. Cook the pasta until it is al dente because it will be baked later on, making it softer. Next, grab a sauce pan and combine 2 cups of half-and-half, 3/4 of a teaspoon of dried oregano and 1 teaspoon of crushed red pep-

per. Let this mixture simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes.

Then, add 1/4 of a cup of cream cheese to the mixture, stirring until there are no chunks and the mixture has developed a smooth, creamy texture.

Add in 8 ounces of sharp shredded cheddar cheese and 3 ounces of shredded mozzarella cheese to the saucepan and mix so the combination remains smooth. After all of the cheese is mixed in, add the macaroni and the cup of water, which you have drained and let cool, stirring while you pour so the macaroni-cheese ratio is even.

Stir in the marinara sauce, the sundried tomatoes and the pepperoni.

Don’t worry if the mixture looks too liquidy, because the macaroni will soak up the water while it is baking in the oven.

Once the mixture appears to have a smooth texture, pour it into a casserole dish and sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the dish. Place the dish in the oven and let bake for 10 minutes to lightly brown the top of macaroni.

Next, check that the macaroni looks baked to your liking and remove from the oven. Set the dish aside and let it cool for 10 minutes before you dig in. Finally, serve your pizza mac ’n’ cheese goodness and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups elbow macaroni 2 cups half-and-half 3/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1/4 cup cream cheese 8 ounces sharp shredded cheddar cheese

3 ounces shredded mozzarella 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, to taste 1/2 cup marinara sauce 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes 3 ounces pepperoni slices 1 cup water

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Boil macaroni until al dente, strain when done.

3. In a saucepan, combine half-andhalf, oregano and crushed red pepper.

Let simmer for 15 minutes, stirring frequently.

4. Add cream cheese to mixture and stir until smooth.

5. Mix in cheddar and mozzarella cheese until sauce is smooth.

6. Add macaroni and cup

of water to saucepan.

7. Stir in marinara sauce, sun-dried tomatoes and pepperoni.

8. Mix thoroughly and pour into a 13-by-9inch casserole dish.

9. Evenly sprinkle Parmesan over macaroni for added flavor.

10. Cook in oven for 10 minutes to lightly brown macaroni.

11. Carefully remove dish from oven, let cool for 10 minutes.

team gains more visibility on campus, its original name has become a distant memory to those who have been at the college for longer than a decade.

Columbia was once home to the Coyotes, an unlikely baseball team from an urban arts college that won a championship in 2004 despite not being taken seriously by its more traditional competitors. The team first started playing at Waveland Park off of Addison Street, shivering by the lake and throwing trash in fire pits to keep warm. They eventually moved over to the University of Illinois at Chicago’s baseball field at Roosevelt Road and Halsted Street—a more traditional park with dugouts.

The original team has changed since, but it left a legacy.

Michael Moran, who played on the championship team, started playing tee ball when he was 5 years old. He stopped playing for the college’s team in 2006 to work on his photography-based senior thesis about the baseball team in 2007, when he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in photography.

Now, the closest Moran gets to baseball is playing drunken wiffle ball in his front yard during family cookouts.

Having remained undefeated until the first game of a double-header just before the championship game, Moran recalls winning against Northwestern University’s club team.

“A lot of those guys were stacked,” Moran said. “Those guys were probably Division I guys who just didn’t make the team, so we were playing almost the equivalent of a division baseball team. They thought they were

going to cakewalk in, and we ended up beating them.”

Known as the Renegades since 2005, Columbia’s baseball team continues to play without its own home field. The team currently practices at Dunbar Park, located at 300 E. 31st St., where the players are greeted by a poorly maintained baseball diamond with no bases, a home plate buried under mud and a mound nearly devoid of dirt. The grass is thick with weeds, and the balls bouncing off it during practice either ricochet off divots or hardly bounce at all, staying low to the ground.

Cory Merriman, the current co-captain of the team, transferred to Columbia from the University of Mount Union in Ohio. He said the current team has other problems aside from lacking a home field, such as players who don’t regularly attend practices.

“We have yet to have a practice where everyone on the team is able to show up and actually develop some on-field chemistry,” Merriman said. “A lot of schedules that guys on the team have conflict with each other’s. When the weekends roll around, that’s when everybody’s free, so we still want to put the best guys out there, but it’s hard for them to play together because they haven’t done it before.”

Wilson’s first season. Students at the time did not know the college had a team, and many still don’t. Wilson said before joining the team he was a “classic Columbia student” who did not know the college had sports, but playing for the Renegades was a worthwhile journey.

“It ended up being that outlet, and from there we started recruiting more,” Wilson said. “I became a captain my second semester on the team. That’s when the team started turning. We started getting more and more guys, and the rest is history.”

Merriman joined the team in the Fall 2013 Semester along with Connor Hudson, a pitcher who once led the National Club Baseball Association in strikeouts. It was that semester when the team ended its years-long losing streak.

Unlike Wilson, Merriman said he knew before enrolling that there was a baseball team at Columbia and would not have attended the college otherwise.

Still, he said it is not easy to win or to even compete without resources.

Merriman said the team is hindered by not having a home field and that it is not enough to be able to practice fielding in Roosevelt University’s Goodman Center, located at 501 S. Wabash Ave. However, the team now holds batting practices at an indoor batting cage multiple times a week. Through the Goodman Center and the cages, the team has a chance to practice when it is cold outside—as opposed to previous years,

when cold weather meant no practice at all.

Even without adequate funding from the college, the Renegades make do with what they have and what resources others allow them to use, such as the Goodman Center and B.I.G. Baseball Academy, the batting cages at which the team practices.

“We’ve gotten a great amount of batting practice that we were never able to get before,” said Mike Sempek, Renegades president and outfielder.

The team received more attention at the college at its first ever tailgate game and pep rally during the Spring 2015 Semester. Though there was food on the grill, it was not as lighthearted as Moran’s front yard wiffle ball games.

The game ended in a tale that summarizes the team’s struggles and inability to capitalize at key points in the game.

“People came out and got to see what we’re able to do,” Sempek said. “It stung.

We lost 7-6. We had bases loaded in the bottom of the last inning with Cory up.

Bases loaded. Two outs. He popped it up and we lost. All we needed was one run to tie it, and that would be huge for us. I personally didn’t play very well. I had one of my worst weekends of my whole career at this school. That was very tough for me.”

Sempek said it’s difficult for all of the players to perform at their best simultaneously, and with poor weather, a short schedule, traveling and minimal funding, it is hard for him and his teammates to fit the pieces together at the same time.

Joe Walsh, first baseman and pitcher on the team, said the biggest challenge the team faces is recruiting. The team has its capable, experienced players, but not enough to effectively fill all nine positions.

“We’re trying to build a program and create awareness because there’s guys here that play baseball, and they probably played at a pretty high level and they’re probably pretty good, but they just don’t know that we have a baseball team,” Walsh said. “That’s one of the

similarities between this team and the team when I first started.”

Ending the season with a 1-7 record, the team may not be championshipready at the moment. However, they are still fighting.

Walsh and Wilson both said the current Renegades team would crush the team they originally started playing for.

“We would smash that team,” Walsh said. “It’s really amazing all the way around how much better we’ve gotten since then.”

He explained that the Renegades team may not have won this year, but their improvement in the last few years has kept players optimistic.

“When a program doesn’t have a win for five years, then anything positive is a win for us,” Walsh said. “Scoring 10 runs in a game, that’s big considering the teams in the past have been no-hit, shut out and run-ruled over and over again. years in suburbia with nothing to do but pass time with friends strolling mindlessly through the mall, hanging out in front of the local movie theater or revisiting old elementary school parks, my freshman year self was thrilled to take on Chicago by storm when I came to Columbia in the fall of 2012.

Between the rich, artistic culture of Columbia and the urban setting of the city, I was eager to seize every opportunity that came my way. I knew that within Columbia’s hallways and throughout the City of Chicago were tons of new experiences waiting for me to take on, but I was overwhelmed. “Where do I begin?” and “How do I get started?” were the two questions picking my brain.

It is surprisingly easy for students to get caught up in the trap of complacency, spending all their free time locked up in a dorm room binge watching Netflix while an entire city full of people bustles outside the window. Do not be that student. Get out and explore the city, meet new people and try new things.

I have learned that you get out of Columbia what you put into it. Once you reach graduation and are about to receive your diploma, you will want to walk across that stage full of college memories that should last forever. The best way to develop those memories is to get involved.

Opportunities to get involved are everywhere, though. It’s just up to you to

take advantage of them. Columbia is full of activities, organizations and people that will all contribute to your college experience and the city is teeming with unique opportunities that can only be found here.

Starting with the New Student Convocation that kicks off your first year and running all the way through Manifest, Columbia’s end-of-the-year celebration of student work, the college hosts several events year-round that make connecting with other students and sharing your work possible.

Put your U-Pass to good use and explore Chicago. It is home to 77 neighborhoods, and all of them have different historical backgrounds and resources to offer. Visit Chicago’s many museums and attend as many street festivals or other events as possible. There is more to the city than the seven blocks that make up Columbia’s campus.

At the college, get to know your professors. They are knowledgeable, helpful and have many connections within the creative industries you can benefit from.

It does not hurt to build relationships with them.

Better yet, get to know your classmates. These students will be your friends, future colleagues and family while at college. Everyone comes to Columbia from various backgrounds, carrying with them different experiences, talents and perspectives. Through getting to know your classmates and collaborating with them, you can learn from those differences and build valuable connections that can last a lifetime.

Finally, get involved in the college community. Find a group, organization or program that interests you and join it. Through this experience, you will learn valuable skills, meet incredible people and leave your own mark on Columbia. I do not know where I would be if I had never joined The Chronicle.

It has taught me so much about my major and through working here I have made some great, long-lasting friendships. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there, because it will only make your college experience much more fulfilling. jwittich@chroniclemail.com

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET involved at

Columbia are everywhere. Among those opportunities, and one of the easiest ways for students to immerse themselves in the college community, is by participating in student organizations.

Columbia is home to a number of organizations catering to a variety of student interests. From the many sports teams offered by the Renegades to cultural organizations like HanGook, the Korean Student Organization, getting involved on campus unites students with common interests.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION The Student Government Association serves as the student voice on campus

and works with staff, faculty and administrators to ensure students’ time at Columbia is enjoyable.

“SGA is the voice between faculty, staff and students,” says Jerel Ballard, SGA president for the 2015–2016 academic year. “Unlike a lot of other colleges and institutions, here at Columbia they really involve the students. We sit in on important committee meetings, [and] we vote on important things that really do affect students on an everyday basis.”

Throughout the year, SGA holds several events to gather and express student input, including weekly meetings, the annual “Let’s Talk” forum that addresses student concerns and the “Pizza with the President” series, which allows students to voice their concerns directly with President and CEO Kwang-Wu Kim. Students interested in representing

the student body while dealing with campus issues can benefit from joining SGA. MUGGLES ASSOCIATION Columbia also offers several organizations catering to students involved in various fandom communities, including the Muggles Association, which gives on-campus Potterheads a place to share their love for the magic of J.K. Rowling’s famous “Harry Potter” series.

“A lot of times [the club members] will get into these conversations, and before you know it, you’re not just talking about characters or settings— they feel like real people and places,” said Sydne Garnett, a member of the Muggles Association. “You’re discussing all these character traits, things you admire and things you hate. It’s almost philosophical at times.”

Several organizations at Columbia also celebrate fandoms outside of the wizarding world of “Harry Potter,” such as the Whovian Society, for admirers of the “Doctor Who” series, and the Japanese Anime Club.

COMMON GROUND Led by Lex Lawson, coordinator of LGBTQA Culture & Community, Columbia’s LGBT and ally organization, Common Ground, focuses on the events and issues that most impact the LGBT community and seeks to make the college a more inclusive space for LGBT-identifying students.

“What’s really important to me about this role is supporting student leadership and creating space for people to build a community,” Lawson said. “I want to connect all the pieces of the college experience and provide all the support folks need to be successful [not only] at Columbia, but also onwards. [I work with] Common Ground to help that and support their leadership and vision.”

Common Ground often collaborates with other organizations within the Office of Multicultural Affairs, including the Asian Student Organization, Black Student Union and Latino Alliance—all of which enable students to get involved on campus. jwittich@chroniclemail.com

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

JEREL BALLARD, A junior journalism major, has been involved with Columbia’s Student Government Association since his freshman year. Ballard initially signed on as an at-large senator and by his sophomore year moved up the ranks to take on the role of vice president of Finance.

Under this role, Ballard oversaw the SGA budget, helped senators prepare SGA proposals for new campus initiatives and brainstormed strategies to help senators spend money on behalf of their departments. Ballard also mentored the SGA’s Committee on Internal Affairs, which plans events like Pizza with the President and helped drive SGA’s budget transparency efforts to make the college budget more accessible to students.

Entering the 2015–2016 academic year, Ballard has assumed a new role within SGA: president. Ballard began his term on May 17, taking over for previous president Sara Kalinoski.

The Chronicle spoke with Ballard about his new role as SGA president, his goals for next year and his thoughts on the current state of the college.

JEREL BALLARD: After being vice president of Finance and working closely with the previous president, I saw a lot of opportunity. We had one of the most successful years, and I want to continue that success. We have a great Senate right now and most senators are 24

How will SGA give voice to students?

When we have our classroom visits and forums, we [make sure] we are really addressing those concerns. Maybe we can have something next year like concern boxes around campus, or an easier way for students to reach SGA and not feel like there is a kind of bridge that they can’t cross.

How will you fight for college affordability?

What do you think are major student issues at Columbia?

The issues of tuition, classroom sizes, making sure students’ voices are being heard, textbook affordability and making sure that [costs are] kept below the

national average, and we are using the textbooks that we buy.

How will you effectively represent students?

I want people to realize I am also a student as well. So even though I am president, I will be attending their events. I will be supporting our senators when they have something going on in their departments and SGA will advertise it.

How will you keep students informed of major changes at the college?

Making sure our senators are well informed is one of the best ways to do it.

It starts with [the executive board] and making sure whoever is on the executive board for next year is informed.

Then we can give that information to our senators. Also, when we have our

I am a student too, so I also pay tuition and so does the rest of Senate. We go out to lobby every year to fight for tuition. We just came back from fighting for the [Monetary Award Program] Grant, which is a grant that might get cut for next year for Illinois residents. We are engaging in conversations with administration all the time. Anytime we are asked a question from students that we might not know how to answer, we point them in the right direction.

What are you most looking forward to?

I really look forward to the senate we are going to have next year [and] all of the great events and the great new ideas we are going to have. chronicle@colum.edu

GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH

other students, as well as the college and the city, are all key components to the First-Semester Experience, and this fall, Columbia is launching a brand new first-semester freshman program designed to ease this process.

The program consists of 14 different Big Chicago courses—weekly 2-hour lectures with smaller, biweekly breakout sessions every other Friday—and the New Student Commons course, which features smaller group sessions unrelated to the Big Chicago material held on alternating Fridays, according to Suzanne Blum Malley, interim dean of the School of Fine & Performing Arts.

Each Big Chicago course will have its own curriculum designed to engage students with the City of Chicago through various media and topics separate from that of the New Student Commons, which contains universal learning outcomes aiming to connect students with resources and activities throughout the college and the city, Blum Malley said.

“We have learning outcomes for the course, and every course is different, so what you learn in [one course] will be different from 26

[another],” Blum Malley said. “[The New Student Commons] is associated with the course, but it’s not connected to the course material. It gives students access to all of the student support facilities, introducing them to what’s available on campus.”

Big Chicago courses will take on a lecture-hall style for weekly meetings consisting of 50–180 students depending on the course—a step away from Columbia’s average class size of 16.67 students, reported by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in the Fall 2014 Semester. Each of the courses will be taught by a college faculty member along with graduate student teaching assistants. On alternating Fridays, students from each class will meet in groups of about 20 to perform teambased work related to the course material, according to Blum Malley.

“It’s the sort of class that doesn’t hurt from being a big lecture because there

is this second part,” said Jim DeRogatis, a lecturer in the English Department who is set to teach “Music & Media in Chicago.”

“Mondays will consist of a two-hour long big lecture, and Fridays will offer smaller breakout groups,” DeRogatis said.

New Student Commons groups, which will meet on Fridays that are not designated to the “Big Chicago” breakout sessions, will be led by peer leaders—student orientation leaders, peer mentors and resident assistants—who are trained to help new students get acquainted with the college and the city. This could include activities ranging from tours of campus facilities to a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago.

This course will take students on a tour through the fancy footwork of Chicago’s rich dance history. Students will learn various dance styles that portray the city’s past and current ideas about sexuality, race, class and gender and how Chicago’s dance scene has helped shape popular culture.

Through an exploration of the city’s deaf community, students will gain an understanding of the history of deaf culture in Chicago and the educational experiences of deaf people locally and internationally. This course will cover a range of topics, including deaf artistic expression.

HOUSED WITHIN CHICAGO’S bustling

South Loop neighborhood is Columbia’s unique urban campus. With more than 20 buildings spanning across several city blocks that include everything from classrooms to administrative offices, some of the most important buildings to new students include its residence halls.

Living on campus provides students with the opportunity to experience urban life and gain a sense of campus community.

Columbia has five dorms, including its original housing facility, Plymouth Court, and the most recent addition, The Flats. Each dorm varies in design, size and amenities, making them just as diverse as the students residing within them.

PLYMOUTH, 731 S. PLYMOUTH COURT Columbia’s first residence hall houses the Residence Life office, a student lounge and the college’s fitness and health centers. More than 300 students live in double occupancy two- or three-bedroom apartments. This dorm is located across from Bar Louie, a popular destination for college kids that offers daily specials such as $1 burgers or $5 martinis.

Many new students live in this dorm.

THE UNIVERSITY CENTER, 525 S. STATE ST. The University Center— commonly known as The UC—is home to many Columbia students. The UC also houses students from the neighboring Roosevelt, Robert Morris and DePaul universities. The building boasts the only oncampus dining hall and has student lounges and study rooms on each floor. Housing the largest concentration of 30

Columbia students, it thrives as a bustling social environment. Residents live above various restaurants, including Wing Stop, Epic Burger, Panera Bread and Panda Express, and have access to a 7-Eleven connected to the UC’s lobby.

THE DWIGHT, 642 S. CLARK ST. Formerly the headquarters of the Dwight Brothers Paper Company, The Dwight has been wholly renovated to become one of Columbia’s signature dorms. The lively aesthetics draw interest from students, and the building facilitates creative expression with a graffiti room and sky lounge. No semi-suites are available in the building because all of the dorm rooms are converted loft apartments that feature large windows and high ceilings.

PROS: Large spaces with high ceilings; most artistic amenities CONS: Long walk from campus; some bedrooms lack windows

777 S. STATE ST. The 777 S. State St. dorm offers large apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows,

an indoor pool and views of the city and Lake Michigan. The residence building is within walking distance of the Harrison Red Line stop, XSport Fitness and the famous Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria. The building is the tallest of the dorms and is popular among upperclassmen.

THE FLATS, 819 S. WABASH AVE. The Flats opened its doors to Columbia students in 2013. Unlike other residence buildings, the Flats have free laundry facilities and bike storage on every other floor.

The building has multiple fitness centers and is located in the center of Columbia’s campus, surrounded by multiple restaurants and bars. While the building is shared with East-West University, most residents are Columbia students.

How To Handle New Roommates Kyra Senese FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE: Treat your roommates as you would like to be treated. Most roommate squabbles can be avoided by simply showing one another common courtesy. Cleaning up after yourself, refraining from making excess noise on week nights and warning your roomies before you invite a bunch of people over are just a few simple ways to facilitate a happy and healthy roommate relationship.

BE OPEN-MINDED: Not everyone is looking to be best friends with their roommate. It’s great to establish a friendly relationship with fellow dorm-dwellers, but be sure to make friends outside of your dorm to ensure that if tensions arise, you can go elsewhere to blow off some steam. Columbia is home to more than 8,000 talented and creative students from across the globe, so get out there and find new friends. Do not limit yourself to the other kids who live on your floor.

GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER:

While it is not required that you become attached at the hip with your roommates, becoming acquainted certainly won’t hurt anyone. Even if you live with a random roommate or just don’t have much in common, getting to know each other early on can be beneficial in the long-run. Try to develop an approachable relationship so that communicating both of your expectations remains easy and clear throughout the year.

MAKE EXPECTATIONS CLEAR: Be upfront from day one. Being completely honest about your likes and dislikes from the beginning will help avoid conflict later in the semester. If chores seem like they could become overwhelming, decide on a routine or schedule to make sure your room doesn’t become the smelliest in the hallway. If you have morning classes, politely ask your roommate not to make a lot of noise on week nights when you are sleeping or cramming for a test.

These simple conversations can save you stress and help maintain a positive relationship throughout the school year.

CTA Red and Purple lines to experience renovations BIANCA MARTINEZ CONTRIBUTING WRITER

THE NORTHERN SECTION of the Chi-

cago Transit Authority’s Red and Purple lines may see major reconstruction in the near future. The CTA proposed a plan to improve old Red and Purple line stations with construction beginning as early as 2017.

Catherine Hosinski, a CTA spokesperson, said the CTA completed an environmental assessment for the Red and Purple Modernization Project’s first phase.

Hosinski said the project is a multifaceted program that will add passenger capacity to the lines north of their Belmont stations by rebuilding the stations, rail tracks and elevated infrastructure.

Hosinski said reconstruction of the Purple and Red line stations is imperative.

“This portion of the Red and Purple lines is among the oldest in our system and is nearing the end of its useful life,” Hosinski said. “By modernizing this infrastructure, we will be providing our customers with smoother and more reliable service as well as providing capacity for the anticipated population growth.”

Hosinski said the CTA has experienced a 40 percent increase in peak ridership during rush hour in the last several years. It is anticipated that 185,000 residents could move to the Brown and Red line service areas by 2040. The project will benefit current and future generations of riders.

Hosinski said phase one of the project would cost approximately $1.9 billion and could take up to four years to complete.

Katrina Balog, executive director of

the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce, said the reconstruction would enable several necessary improvements.

“The viaduct repair is going to be important because there are crumbling viaducts along the el tracks,” Balog said.

The project will also benefit the Edgewater neighborhood economically, Balog said.

“When [the CTA] did the Brown line renovation, they saw that home values grew over the decade by 40 percent, and 15 percent of all new construction permits were issued near the Brown Line station,” Balog said. “The more people that are able to use the stations, the more attractive it is to buy homes nearby.”

Keith McCormick, executive director of the Uptown Chamber of Commerce, said any improvements to public transportation would benefit local businesses.

“Uptown has four CTA Red Line stations,” McCormick said. “Those kinds of improvements make it better for the residents and tourists who visit and spend money in our neighborhood.”

McCormick said the stations need to be updated to better accommodate riders with disabilities.

“It would be great to have accessibility for senior citizens and people who have special requirements,” McCormick said.

Hosinski also said the project is necessary to better serve all riders.

“It will help alleviate congestion that is currently experienced and provide a more reliable, more convenient travel option for those living in Chicago,” Hosinski said.

Flaco’s Tacos: Located at 725 S. Dearborn St., Flaco’s Tacos sits within reach of all of Columbia’s dorms and offers a tasty alternative to the Taco Bell combos that college students often settle for in an effort to be kinder to their wallets than their stomachs.

Students who are 21 and older can also indulge in their $4 margarita specials on Monday nights.

Be a tourist: Many students come to Columbia having never even stepped foot in Chicago. Consider your freshman year the grace period to get your inner tourist out of your system before you are a full-blown Chicagoan and tourists become public enemy No. 1. Visit the Bean, take a selfie atop the Willis Tower skydeck and visit the Art Institute of Chicago—admission is free for Columbia students.

Leather Archives and Museum: The museum, 6418 N. Greenview Ave., says it serves the “fetish community” by housing a collection devoted to “leather, sadomasochism and alternative sexual practices” covering “all sexual orientations and genders.” On exhibition are BDSM watercolors by painter Morris L. Taylor, 82, who with his partner won the International Master/Slave contest in 2013.

The Money Museum: Located in the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, 230 S. LaSalle St., it shows you what $1 million stuffed in a suitcase looks like and offers tutorials on counterfeit money and how inflation saps your buying power. The place warns you not to bring firearms or stun guns. Seriously!

The Busy Beaver Button Museum: Displayed at the Busy Beaver Button Co., 3279 W. Armitage Ave., are 9,000 political and historical buttons, including one from Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 presidential run and a rare 1972 McGovern/Eagleton button. There are also pro- and anti-Prohibition buttons, one that says “Down With Pants,” and our personal favorite, “You’re so ugly, when you were born the doctor spanked your mother.”

The Pritzker Military Museum & Library: This museum has moved from below an Indian eatery to 104 S. Michigan Ave., where it hosts a huge array of war-related artifacts, books and films, many from the founder, Col. Jennifer N. Pritzker, the world’s first openly transgender billionaire.

The Peace Museum: This collection once housed relics of such figures as Dr. Martin Luther King and Beatle John Lennon. Sadly, it fell on hard economic times in 2007 and is currently without a home. Is it a metaphor? You decide.

Cafecito: Rated “Best Cuban Sandwich in Chicago,” Cafecito resides near the 33 E. Congress Parkway Building and provides an option that differs from the larger chains nearby such as Subway and Panda Express. They also have some of the best (and strongest) coffee in the area.

Panera Bread: This one is much less unique than the other eateries I have selected, but it simply could not be overlooked. I’m all for trying new things and exploring the countless culinary options Chicago has to offer, but when I am in high-stress situations I need comfort food. Conveniently located right next to the 33 E. Congress Parkway Building, Panera (and their mac ‘n’ cheese) has never failed me.

Tamarind: Located at 614 S. Wabash Ave., Tamarind serves up a variety of Chinese, Thai and Japanese meals on the menu. The staff is always super friendly and the service is quick, making ordering some tasty takeout an appealing option if you’re just on your lunch break at work.

Pauly’s Pizzeria: This is a more casual pizzeria in the area compared to the pricier Lou Malnati’s just down the street. Pauly’s lies at 719 S. State St. between the 777 S. State St. dorm and the Plymouth residence center. With a versatile menu and collegefriendly hours, I must say many of my foggy freshman memories involved stops with my best friends and roommates at Pauly’s before they closed up shop at 3 a.m. on Saturday nights.

Meet your neighbors: If you live in the dorms, step out of your comfort zone and knock on your neighbors’ doors to introduce yourself. Dorming in college gives you the luxury of having a tight-knit community of friends all living on the same floor as you.

Take advantage of that.

Get a questionable haircut: Shave your head, dye your hair or even wear a wig if you want to. It almost seems like an unwritten rule that every freshman must experiment with their hair in some way or another. With the newfound freedom that comes with going away to college, changing your hair is the perfect creative expression of your identity. Besides, if there was ever a time that it’s perfectly OK to rock a crazy ‘do, it’s your college years.

Change your style: Better yet, change your entire style if you want to. Going away to college gives you a clean slate. You can start fresh and work to become a new version of yourself that you have always wanted to be. Save up and go shopping for a new wardrobe, rock a new body piercing or even get a tattoo.

Study: It will be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life in the city as you are surrounded by new friends and opportunities, but do not lose sight of the true reason you’re at college: to get an education.

You’re not paying thousands of dollars in tuition every year for it to go to waste, so keep organized and stay on top of your classes.

As a Deaf Studies major, you’ll learn how to be an advocate for and with the Deaf community in the United States. The curriculum provides a coherent plan of study through courses in American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, linguistics, cultural theories, and practicums involved within the Deaf community. During your final year, you’ll take on an internship, which includes fieldwork and a capstone. A second BA degree program is also open to students.

Reckless Records growth continues in Wicker Park

front location of Reckless Records at 1379 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.

The new store, which sells new and used records, moved a couple blocks away to a larger space on April 16 to make room for more records, according to David Hofer, a new product buyer for the store. “[We were] bursting at the seams,” Hofer said. “We were out of shelf space behind and in front of the counter.”

Hofer, who has been with the company for 12 years, said he remembers feeling like he could not breathe in the previous location because of its size. He said it was becoming difficult to shop and work there, despite having storage units full of records.

Hofer said the move was triggered when a Wicker Park real estate company bought the old building, leading the owners to purchase the new space.

Ave. location five years ago and initially struggled to bring in the same volume of visitors as its previous southern Wicker Park location near the old Reckless store.

Linnane said he is hopeful Reckless will bring more business into the cafe and other neighboring businesses.

“What we are all aiming for is more foot traffic,” Linnane said. “We all sort of feed off of each other.”

Sam Bower, a Wicker Park resident, frequently shops at Reckless Records and said he did not realize the store had moved until he saw announcements plastered on the empty old store’s windows, but he appreciates the new setup.

“It is way bigger and smells brand new,” Bower said. “It is a good location.”

The welcoming energy and upgraded space will definitely bring Bower back to shop at Reckless Records, he said.

Hofer said the new store provides more space to work in, house records and host music events such as album signings.

“I believe [Reckless Records] is a great thing for this part of the neighborhood,” Linnane said. chronicle@colum.edu
