Israel and Hamas at war after years of tension Kate Verity News Editor

On Oct. 7, members of the militant group Hamas invaded the state of Israel, killing over 1,400 Israelis and injuring at least 4,500. Israeli civilians were overrun and caught off guard, resulting in a death toll larger than the last 15 years of aggres-

sion in the Israel-Palestine dispute combined. Hamas, which has been classified as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States since 1997, also killed at least 30 U.S. nationals in the assault. Additionally, 203 people were taken hostage and into Gaza. That same day, Israel declared war on Hamas. In response to the attacks, Israel rained air-

strikes down on the Gaza Strip, the territory to the south of Israel. Although Gaza is occupied by Israel, Hamas has held political control in the region for years. As of Oct. 19, Israel’s counter attacks have resulted in over 3,400 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries in the Palestinian territory. The Israeli Defense Forces, or IDF, is the national military of Is-

rael. They called for the residents of northern Gaza to evacuate into the south. As of Oct. 21, the United Nations says that at least 1.4 million Gazan people have been displaced, and over 500,000 are in U.N. shelters. However, these airstrikes only preempt the ground invasion the IDF is preparing to mount. See ISRAEL | Page 3

Cracked out on Celsius

Does Celsius have methamphetamine in it? Drew Oldham Opinion Editor Earlier this month, a wave of horror and hysteria came upon the worldwide community of caffeine addicts. Mass panic upon caffeine consumers came when a few creators on TikTok posted videos of the wildly popular Celsius energy drink yielding positive urine test results for methamphetamines, cocaine and benzodiazepines. This shocked, terrified and outraged people who regularly consume Celsius, as many of them feared greatly for their health upon seeing these videos. They felt deceived by the beloved brand, as when they be-

Allied Arts is a local nonprofit organization seeking to share art and inspiration throughout the community of Milledgeville. Throughout the month of October, Allied Arts has been hosting its first annual Haunted Milledgeville exhibit. The exhibit began on Thursday, Oct. 5, and will continue until Tuesday, Oct. 31 in the Allied Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day until the exhibit is closed. The Haunted Milledgeville exhibit boasts works from both professional and amateur artists, including stu-

dents and alumni from GC. It was brought together by program coordinator Kristin Allen and seeks to bring Halloween themed events to Milledgeville in time for the spooky season. The event holds a mix of art and photography from Milledgeville’s most notoriously haunted locations. “I want to display my art to hopefully help inspire any artist, young or old, to keep creating,” said Edward Lee Burnam, an artist involved in the exhibit. “This is my first time being involved. All the responses and compliments have made me want to continue to share my art with [Allied Arts] and our community.”

There are a wide variety of categories, including, but not limited to, Central State Hospital, GC’s Sanford Hall and Harrison House, the Governor’s Mansion, the Tate-Walker House, Memory Hill Cemetery, the Voodoo Murders of 1887 and the Georgia State Prison Farm. Many locations around Milledgeville have deep and often chilling histories behind them. This exhibit showcases this history through works of art. Included with the displays in the exhibit are booklets that offer additional information about the history behind the art. See HAUNTED | Page 6

Five sports added to the 2028 Olympic Games Drew Bogumill Staff Writer The LA28 Organizing Committee has proposed five additional sports for the Olympic Games in 2028. These sports are baseball and softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash. Three of the five proposed sports have previously been sports contested at the Olympic Games. These include baseball and softball, cricket and lacrosse. “Both baseball and softball would be awesome to see in an Olympic Game,” said Christian Davies, a junior management informa-

tion systems, or MIS, major. “It would be nice to be able to cheer for players that I know in a sport that I love to watch.” Unlike its only previous appearance at the 1900 Paris Games, cricket will not be a two-innings-a-side competition. Instead, the proposal calls for a limitedovers, 20-20 format for the event. For lacrosse, the proposed format is Sixes Lacrosse. Lacrosse appeared in consecutive Games in the early 20th century, with Canada winning both gold medals awarded in the sport. “I would love to see lacrosse in future Olympic Games,” said John

Nagy, a senior mass communication major. “For one, it would definitely favor the U.S., but it would also be awesome to see a real contact sport being played between countries.” Baseball and softball were most recently included in the 2020 Tokyo Games, where the host, Japan, took both gold medals. Following its discussion of the LA28’s proposal, the International Olympic Committee’s, or IOC’s, Olympic Programme Commission will issue a recommendation to the IOC Executive Board.
