Milledgeville Fire Chief charged with simple battery
GBI investigates alleged fight at fundraiser event at Baldwin County High School Chance Curbow Staff writer Milledgeville Fire Chief William Collier was arrested and charged with one count of simple battery on Nov. 29 following an alleged physical altercation at a charity event. The incident occurred between Collier and former firefighter, Willie
Tennyson, at the Baldwin County High School Gymnasium on Oct. 22. The Milledgeville Police Department requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, or the GBI, on Oct. 25, and when they made the decision to arrest Collier, he was booked into the Baldwin County Jail. According to Bald-
win County Jail records, Collier was booked into a cell at 11:46 a.m. on Nov. 29 after being allowed to turn himself in. Tennyson had resigned from the fire department earlier this year but was at the gymnasium wearing the same shirt that active fire department personnel were given to wear during the event.
“It’s really weird that someone would show up and try and participate in a job they recently quit,” said Sairsha Connor, a sophomore mass communication major. “I don’t think the fire chief was right to grab the shirt off another man, but I do understand frustration with someone posing as a member of his team.” There has been a
probable cause hearing for Collier’s case. Neither Collier nor his attorney attended the hearing, but GBI Special Agent Zachary Plock presented the findings of the GBI investigation. “It’s pretty baffling that someone in this type of position of power thinks they can do whatever they want without any repercussions,” said Dylan
Almond, a sophomore computer science major. “He probably thought since he is the fire chief, nothing would happen.” Reportedly, Collier took the shirt off Tennyson’s back, and it was confirmed in the investigation that Collier made physical contact with Willie See FIRE CHIEF| Page 2

JEN’S JAMS: THE FIVE BEST ALBUMS OF 2023 Jennifer Crider Editor in Chief
5. “KAYTRAMINÉ” - KAYTRANADA & Aminé: Everything that KAYTRANADA touches turns into gold, and every album that Aminé has created has somehow topped the one before. So, needless to say, I had extremely high expectations, especially after the release of the first single from this album, “4EVA.” The collaboration of KAYTRANADA’s funky beats that were reminiscent of the ‘70s disco sound and Aminé’s lighthearted, goofy and oftentimes braggadocious lyrics resulted in the perfect summertime album. The standout songs from this album are “Master
P,” “letstalkaboutit” and “Who He Iz.” Although this album has a very special place in my heart, it is receiving the No. 5 rank due to the fact that it does not feel very cohesive, making it feels like somewhat of a mixtape rather than a structured album. If there was more of a storyline behind this album and better transitions throughout, then it would definitely be placed higher in this ranking. However, I am very excited to see what KAYTRAMINÉ will produce in the future. 4. “The Loveliest Time” - Carly Rae Jepsen: I am a passionate and firm believer that Carly Rae Jepsen deserves an exponential amount of more praise
and recognition. Unfortunately, radio stations overplaying of her hit song “Call Me Maybe” in 2012 has overshadowed her entire discography, leaving ignorant people to assume that this is all she has to offer. But in reality, Jepsen is a pop powerhouse with an eclectic and experimental discography. Although each song on “The Loveliest Time” sounds different, the album feels cohesive. Songs such as “Kamikaze” and “Shy Boy” have an ‘80s pop sound, while others, such as “Psychedelic Switch,” have French synth influences. Jepsen’s combination of indie, folk and See ALBUMS | Page 11
Championship weekend has officially come to a close, and it ended with a very controversial decision on Dec. 3 during the College Football Playoff selection show. Some of the most notable games this past weekend were the SEC Championship between No. 1 Georgia and No. 8 Alabama, the ACC Championship game between No. 4 Florida State and No. 14 Louisville and The Pac-12 Championship between No. 5 Oregon and No. 3 Washington. Oregon was looking for revenge on Washington after a close game in their matchup earlier in the season. In that game, Washington scored a game-winning touchdown to Rome Odunze from Heisman candidate Michael Penix Jr. with 1:38 left to win 36-33. A win from Oregon in the Pac-12 championship would have put the Ducks in the playoffs and kept Washington out. Once again, this game did not disappoint, as Washing-
ton kept their spot in the playoffs with a thrilling 34-31 win over Oregon. Washington dominated in the run game, with Dillon Johnson rushing for 152 yards on 28 attempts with three total touchdowns, two of which being rush-
ing and one passing . Alabama and Georgia was another exciting game between the two SEC powerhouses. Georgia went into the SEC Championship riding their 29-game winning streak with a chance to be in the CFB Playoff
for their third national championship in a row. However, football fans speculated that with a Georgia loss, the playoff committee might have no choice but to leave them out of the playoffs. Alabama bested Georgia 27-24 in another SEC Championship classic between the two football programs. The two teams played an evenly split game, with Georgia having only 15 more yards of offense and a turnover. Alabama won the turnover split with no turnovers and only one more first down than Georgia. “It was tough to watch Georgia after the first drive,” said Jacob Johnson, a senior accounting major. “They weren’t playing bad football, but the first possession was night and day compared to the other offensive possessions. I don’t know what changed.” Georgia’s one loss this season to Alabama was enough to keep the Bulldogs out of the playoffs and just enough to put the Crimson Tide in. Leaving Georgia out of the playoffs is tough for many fans despite all of Georgia’s success leading up to the loss. See FOOTBALL| Page 6
No win November: Why are the Pistons so dreadful? Drew Oldham Opinion Editor
It seems that God himself has come down from heaven to condemn the Detroit Pistons franchise to eternal suffering, cyclical mediocrity and overwhelming dissapointment. It has now been 40 days since the Pistons have won a basketball game. By the time this article is published, this drought could be as long as 45 days in the likely scenario that they continue to lose.
This recent losing streak has left sophomore exercise science major Ben Stone utterly distraught and dumbfounded by the lack of effective management of this team. “As a Detroit fan, it is exciting to finally see the Lions succeed after many years of patiently waiting for a good sports team in Detroit,” Stone said. “However, the Pistons are a hopeless dumpster fire that reminds me of the long-standing curse on my city, which is that two good things
can’t happen at once in Detroit, Michigan.” This disastrous season began with promise, as the Pistons managed to win two of their first three games. Their first win of the season came against the Charlotte Hornets, thanks to an impressive 24-point performance from shooting guard Alec Burks. Their blowout win against the struggling Chicago Bulls came in spite of a 50-point performance from Zach Lavine, largely thanks to a 25-point and 10-assist effort from
promising young guard Cade Cunningham. However, the glory days did not last long, and they were not even that glorious. Since starting the season 2-1, the Pistons find themselves on a 19-game losing streak that spanned the entire month of November, earning the colloquial label “No Win November” and has now to snuck into the first half of December. The Pistons active losing streak is tied with several teams for the 14th longest losing
streak in NBA history and is the longest losing streak in the team’s 82year history. The pain that this losing streak has brought to the Pistons franchise is only
intensified by the fact this franchise has seen hardly any success since many of us were born. See NO WINS | Page 12
