The frightening history of Central State Katie Futch Asst. News Editor On Nov. 4, 1834, the general assembly convened at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville. At this assembly, Gov. Wilson Lumpkin proposed that the state needed to assist the “the lunatics, idiots and epileptics.”

Three years later, the Georgia State Legislature approved the construction of a mental asylum at the edge of Milledgeville’s city limits. In December of 1842, the Georgia Lunatic Asylum admitted their first patient, Tilman Barnett.

Barnett arrived on the campus chained to a horse-drawn wagon. He was a 30-year-old farmer from Bib County. His patient file described him as “a violent

and destructive lunatic.” He died not even six months after his arrival; his file labeled the death as “maniacal exhaustion.”

Of the first 50 patients admitted to the hospital, 29 died without leaving the campus. The causes of death were recorded as dysentery, convulsions, and general paralysis. By 1860, 283 patients inhabited the Georgia Lunatic Asylum.

Until 1866, they only admitted white patients. However, after the Civil War, they were required to allow patients of different races. In 1870, over one-sixth of the patients were African American.

Many of these patients had only their first name or no name in their file. One patient was referred to as “Negro Man.” Black and white patients were segregated. They lived in different buildings, received separate treatment, and were also buried in isolated cemetery plots.

By 1904, the hospital had 3,000 patients. It was renamed the Georgia State Sanitarium. By the end of the year, hundreds of patients died from tuberculosis. The staff pleaded Gov. Joseph Terrell for $10,000 for a quarantine building and new water supply.

In the plea written to Gov. Terrell, hospital superintendent Dr. Theophilus O. Powell wrote that caring for the mentally ill “should not be regarded as a burden, but a divine privilege.”

By the early 1930s, the hospital began

practicing routine electroshock therapy for patients. The doctors jokingly called this the “Georgia Power Cocktail.” They also performed lobotomies, a procedure that cuts the nerves connected to the frontal lobe to the rest of the brain.

In 1937, the hospital began involuntarily sterilizing its patients. They performed these procedures on patients who were deemed mentally defective.

Dr. Thomas Peacock, the hospital superintendent from 1948 to 1959, said that sterilizing patients was humanitarian and scientific.

“It is protecting patients from psychotic episodes induced by pregnancy and shielding children from mental trauma by psychotic parents,” Peacock said.

By the time the practice of sterilization was discontinued in 1963, the state of Georgia forced 3,300 patients to be sterilized in less than 30 years.

By the 1960s, the patient population of the Milledgeville State Hospital had grown to 13,000. Each employee was assigned to care for at least 100 patients. There were only 48 certified doctors, not one of them a psychiatrist.

In 1950, Peter Cranford, a doctor at the hospital, wrote that three patients died after escaping. Another patient vomited in the maximum-security cell. Hospital staff forced him to clean it up with a towel. They proceeded to demand he eat the

towel; he choked and died of suffocation.

These horrific events went unnoticed by the public until 1959. Jack Nelson, a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, investigated the newly named Central State Hospital. Nelson discovered that some patients were hired on as “doctors.”

He gained nationwide recognition for his story and ended up winning a Pulitzer Prize. This raised attention from the state of Georgia. Central State began its’ downsize to only a few hundred patients.

In 2007, the AJC discovered that 136 state hospital patients died under the hands of the hospital staff. One patient died from asphyxiation after he was restrained face down on the floor. Several died due to neglect and lack of treatment.

After a state-wide investigation, Central State once again downsized to a 184-bed facility. Today, only a secure facility for mentally ill criminal defendants remains open.

The 2,000-acre campus is completely abandoned, except for the Powell building, where a few administrative offices remain. The cemetery has some 15,000 metal stakes with numbers that correspond to the deceased patient’s file.

Jaylon Brooks Staff Writer The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has given Terrell Hall the Excellence in Rehabilitation award at the 44th annual Preservation Awards ceremony, held on Oct. 11 in Macon.

The purpose of the award is to recognize the best attempts at preserving historic buildings in Georgia.

Terrell Hall was first constructed in 1908, as a women’s dormitory, to be a part of the campus of the then-named Georgia State College for Women.

Originally it was dubbed Lamar Hall after Richard Lamar, Baldwin County state commissioner and a founding member of the Board of Directors.

Lamar famously didn’t approve of Marvin Parks, who was college president at the time, and Parks’ allies on the board eventually had the name of the dorm changed to Terrell Hall in 1913. This was done in memory of Joseph Terrell, who was governor of Georgia until 1907.

Terrell largely remained a residence hall until the 1980s when the history department moved in, and the building began to be used academically.

Over time, some of the mass communication and foreign language departments would end up calling the building home.

By 2006, Terrell was no longer being used as a dorm, and was completely dedicated to office space.

Renovations on Terrell officially began in January of 2017, with the rib-

bon-cutting event taking place in February of 2020.

Prior to the renovations, while most of the programs residing in Terrell Hall were from the Mass Communication department, many of their offices, classrooms, and organizations were scattered across campus.

“Students that were doing television production would have to go to the fourth floor of Atkinson, which we were sharing with the university communications department,” said Angela Criscoe, interim executive director in the school of continuing and professional studies.

It was because of this that former President Dorman and Provost Brown made the decision to dedicate the renovated Terrell Hall to the mass communications department.

During construction, those in the department were moved into Beeson Hall, though various professors were allowed to work with the architects to give input on specific changes they wanted to make.

“I told our department chair at the time that I knew a little about construction and would love to play a role in what the building would look like,” said Criscoe.

Criscoe acted as an associate professor in the mass communications department until this past summer and was privy to many of the renovations made to Terrell Hall.

After the renovations, Terrell Hall contained a variety of cutting-edge technology for the use of students, totaling $13.3 million.

Another key focus of the renovations was restoring some of the building’s more historic aspects.

This would include wider hallways, stripping off almost 30 coats of paint to restore the old wood flooring, higher ceilings and uncovering windows.

“Terrell Hall’s architecture has remained largely unchanged, and it’s the best preserved of the early campus buildings,” said Robert Wilson III, Professor Emeritus of history and university historian.

During the 1970s, many of these older features were obscured as part of a movement made to modernize the building.

Many much-needed modern features were added to the building, such as a central air-conditioning system and an elevator.

“There was a boiler

in the basement that we used for heat, and once they turned that on, they didn’t turn it off again until the spring,” said Amanda Respess, senior lecturer in the mass communication department.

“And you know how Georgia goes up and down with our temperatures.”

A great deal of work was put into Terrell Hall not just to ensure that it could cater to each and every need of mass communication students, but to also give them a glimpse into where it all started.

“In the department of communications, we teach our students how to communicate properly to the public and placing us in a forward-facing building on front campus is a message to the community that this is who we are,” said Criscoe.

Q&A with President Cox Katie Futch Asst. News Editor

On October 8th, WGUR’s Jonathan O’Brien, and Katie Futch, the Assistant News Editor for The Colonnade, sat down with GC’s new president, Cathy Cox. In this interview, they discussed Cox’s background and how its diversity represents the Liberal Arts Education, the tension amongst the faculty regarding COVID-19, and what she plans to do at GC. O’Brien: Go into your background for those of us who were on the younger side when you were Secretary of State. Can you talk about everything that happened before that and what’s prepared you for this moment?

President Cox: I grew up down in South Georgia, which is easy to tell when I opened my mouth that I am a true South Georgian. But I started in college thinking that I would study plant science. I had two great grandmothers who were gardeners and taught me to work in the yard with them. I loved working with plants. I started college at ABAC studying horticulture and agriculture. I thought that would be my career path until I spent a summer pulling weeds at Callaway gardens in 100-degree weather.

I decided that having a job in the air conditioning might not be so bad. I changed my major when I transferred then to the University of Georgia to journalism. I like to write, and I thought that would be interesting.

After graduation, I went to work for a newspaper in Gainesville, Georgia. The new kid on the block always got the job nobody else wanted: the crime beat. I went to murder scenes, car wrecks, autopsies and had to write about all of those things.

Then I also had to cover trials and defendants charged with a crime. When I went to the courtroom, I was lost. I did not know what the judges were doing or the language people were using. I decided I needed a legal education to write intelligently about what was happening in the courtroom. That’s why I decided to pursue a law degree at Mercer law school. Once I got there, I found out that lawyers write a lot. That changed my whole perspective on what I wanted to do with my writing career. After I graduated with my law degree, I started out practicing law in Atlanta with a large firm. I decided to go back to Bainbridge to practice after my dad became ill. I was the first woman lawyer down in South Georgia in about 10 or 11 counties down there, which was in and of itself, quite an experience. You know, people would come to the courthouse and say, let’s go watch the lady lawyer and see if the judge is going to make her cry. But it provided me a lot of opportunities, I think, to change some perspectives that women could be lawyers just like men and allowed me to pursue an interest in politics.

A couple of years after my dad died, I was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and got to serve in the legislature.

After two terms in the legislature, I had the chance to run for Secretary of State as the first woman to run for and be elected to that office. Which was another great experience. I served two terms as Secretary of State. In 2006, I ran for governor, and the voters decided I needed to do something else. So, I lost that election. But I see that as a win because that opened the avenue I had to go into higher education.

Then I got the chance to be President at Young Harris College and to go to work on a very small campus that wanted to grow from two years to four years and spent 10 years there as president. I became immersed in the liberal arts education process, and what it can do for today’s students. It made me appreciate all these different things that I have been able to do with my life and how the breadth of my education, though not a conventional liberal arts education, had helped me adapt to all these changes that I had been through.

Ultimately, I got the chance to go back to my alma mater at Mercer law school and become the dean there over the last four years, which was sort of tugging at my heart.

To do that at Mercer law school, I thought I wanted the opportunity to be on a larger university campus, and to serve as a dean since I did not come up in the traditional academic realm. And that was helpful to me, I think, in growing as an academic leader to work closer in context with faculty, and on curriculum issues, and those kinds of things. But when this opportunity came along, I felt like I had the right experiences to serve Georgia College well, but I was just excited to get this opportunity and to be a part of a campus that is doing so well as Georgia College is today.

Futch: It sounds like you have a lot of communication experience and dealing with large groups of people, whether it is your career in politics, your presidency at Young Harris, or being the Dean of Mercer law school. What is your key to success whenever communicating with large groups of people?

President Cox: You just have to understand how important communication is. But I look at communication as a conversation. I certainly prepare when I’m giving speeches, but I’ll tell you a story that sort of changed the way I approached speeches. When I was first elected to the legislature, I was at a chamber of commerce banquet in my hometown of Bainbridge, and another state official came to give the speech at our Chamber of Commerce banquet, and I was in the audience like everybody else.

A man came to give the speech and he gave this canned speech that had nothing whatsoever to do with anybody in Bainbridge. And I thought, what are we, you know, chopped liver? You have traveled from Atlanta down to Bainbridge, and you have given a speech to our chamber banquet, and you have not talked about one thing that relates to who we are and what we are doing.

It changed my perspective about how I give speeches and how I try to talk in interviews like this to just remember,

who is my audience? What do they expect? What do I want them to get out of this conversation? I always try to prepare speeches, to think I want this audience to leave here saying I got something out of this, she recognized why my time was valuable. My audience’s time is valuable. What is your message? What do you want to try to get across? Communication is just the essence of who we are. So you use it as a chance to establish a relationship with somebody and make it a two-way conversation if you can.

Futch: As a graduate of Grady College of Journalism, you understand what it is like to receive a USG education. What do you value most about your experience?

President Cox: I think about all the friendships that I made at every school that I attended, whether ABAC, University of Georgia, or Mercer law school. I made lifelong friends that I am still in touch with today. I hope that all of you are finding that at GC. If you invest time in building those friendships, these friendships will support you and enrich your life forever. But it takes a while. You have to be a friend to make a friend.

I had a meeting with students on my first Friday here. I asked students what they loved about Georgia College, and so many of them talked about their relationships here with other friends, which I thought was revealing about the students here at Georgia College and their maturity in appreciating the importance of relationships, they talked about how they love being able to walk down a sidewalk and have five people say hello to them and call their name on the way to class.

Maybe it’s because we’re all sort of in that post-pandemic world where we’re so happy to be back together. And I hope that lasts, I hope we can build on that and do other things to bring our community back together.

I know I got friendships from being a part of a residential campus, you don’t get that from online education. I mean, you might learn the basics of a discipline online, but you don’t build those kinds of relationships that can add so much to your life. You might also meet somebody that’s ultimately going to be your law partner, somebody that will hire you, somebody that networks you into another job refers a case to you as a lawyer, 20 years from now, I mean, the relationships and the way people interact, and what that will do for your life and your career, you just will never be able to measure.

O’Brien: There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of tension amongst the faculty here at Georgia College. How do you plan to bring things together to keep the Board of Regents and the faculty happy?

President Cox: There’s one thing you learn in politics and that is besides developing a thick skin is that you will never, ever make everybody happy. It’s not that I won’t try, because I will try. I would love for everybody to be really happy about working on this campus, just as I want every student to be excited about attending college here. But at the end of the day, if we try as hard as we can, everybody’s not happy.

But we have to be realistic about what our situation is.

First and foremost, we want everybody to be safe. We’re part of the university system. We have to follow the guidance that we get from the university system. They are following and developing guidance based on CDC guidance, and the Georgia Department of Public Health.

We can look at that and modify that for our campus purposes.

You also have to think about where we are. We are lightyears from where we were in August. We’re light-years from where we were last spring. I want to figure out if we are doing everything we can to incentivize and encourage vaccinations because we’re never going to find our way out of this pandemic until we can further vaccinate our population and encourage people to feel good and safe about getting vaccinations. There’s a good chance that we could have further upticks in the virus if we don’t further get our populations vaccinated. I want to drill down into how we can do that. But we’re in a much better place than we were at the beginning of the semester. We have to deal with the reality that can make us a little more comfortable today than where we might have been with mitigation efforts that were needed at the first of the semester.

As a leader, you always have to know you want to give people a chance to be heard, you want to come up with the best ideas possible from people, and then you have to move forward in the best way you can.

O’Brien: One criticism of your predecessor has been that he wasn’t as accessible as most people would have

liked. What are you going to do to try to connect with the campus community?

President Cox: I don’t think you’ll be saying that about me. When I was president at Young Harris, the favorite thing I loved to do was just to walk the campus and get to know students. I would walk the campus at night, where I could see students when they weren’t in a rush between classes, and had a chance for conversation. I have a yellow Labrador Retriever dog, Ellie Mae, who would love to walk the campus with me and meet all of you students.

So if you’re not fearful of a 12-year-old puppy dog who certainly won’t hurt you, you may see me. If you see the lady walking around with the dog, it’s me, please speak to us. Because I want to know you. I want to be a part of your activities. I want to know what you enjoy. I want to know what your career path journeys are. I want to know why you’re excited to be here. I want to know what you love about this place, I can’t help grow this college and strengthen it. Unless I know what you think we’re doing best. Unless I know what you think we’re not doing best if I don’t know what’s driving you crazy. I don’t know how to fix those things. So I hope you’ll find me to be very accessible.

Futch: How do you plan to increase diversity and inclusion on Georgia College’s campus?

President Cox: I had a good track record of improving diversity and inclusion at Young Harris College. We were able to grow our student body diversity, improve the faculty and staff, ratios and numbers in diversity over the time that I was there. So there are a lot of ways that I can think of. And a lot, I think, are already in the works here.

I want to drill down and understand how that’s going to work and how we can enhance that. But there are nuances. Not all student populations have the luxury of getting in a car with a family and making a campus visit.

So I want to make sure that our virtual visits and virtual tours of the Georgia College campus are robust so that students who can’t drive down here can see our campus and feel good about what they see. And I also want them to know that you can come to Georgia College and you don’t necessarily have to have a car because our shuttles will take you to the grocery store and Walmart and so you don’t have to have a car to get everywhere.

So I want to figure out what the students need? And how can we reach out to students of all backgrounds and all needs? But diversity is one thing. But inclusiveness is another thing and how do we assess the environment here for inclusiveness? How do we make sure that students from all walks of life feel included and welcome on this campus?

That’s something I’m going to be embarking on a listening tour this fall. I’m very serious about listening. I didn’t come here with a grand plan to say I can do everything better than what y’all have been doing. I’m coming here to say, I’m very impressed with what you’re doing. But I want to listen, so I understand it. So I can figure out how we can even do better things and enhance what we’re doing. I want to know where we’re perhaps struggling and, and understand more, why that is, and where we’ve got some weaknesses that we can address and shore up.

But you will never improve diversity if you don’t have a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. And so you kind of have to tackle that if you want to improve the ladder.

O’Brien: You’ve done so many different things. What’s been your biggest challenge?

President Cox: My biggest challenge is just getting sleep.

You know, I just like to do a lot of things as you can tell.

I guess in some respects, the job I had as the dean kept me in such a box of limited authority. I didn’t feel as challenged as I wanted to be. And I think the role of a president gives you more challenges, maybe sometimes more challenges than you want on any given day. But I like to be challenged, I hope all of you as students are going to pursue careers that challenge you. I don’t ever want to be bored in life. I think life is far too short to be bored.

So I hope you all pursue jobs and careers that you find to be interesting, that keep you thinking, keep you on your feet, keep you awake at night, and keep you challenged.

Because I think that’s what life is all about. I think that’s what makes life interesting is to be challenged and to find hard things. Because ultimately, when you accomplish those things that are hard, you find this great sense of reward and enrichment, and how great learning is, and when you’re just going through the motions and rinse and repeat every day.

GC SOCCER LOCKS IN FOR FINAL STRETCH OF THE SEASON Soccer dominates in Senior Night showdown Bailey Clark

Contributing Writer The GC soccer team held their Senior Night Saturday, Oct. 16. The Bobcats dominated Young Harris College, picking up a 3-0 victory.

GC took the lead early in the first half, knocking in their first goal in the eighth minute of the game. Senior Alyssa Bergamini scored a dominant-foot goal from the 18-yard box.

Twin sister Alexis picked up the assist as she possessed the ball on the right-wing for the cross to Alyssa inside the box.

“When I got the cross from Lex and I saw the spacing between me and the defender, I knew I had to get the shot off,” Alyssa said. “I felt the ball off my foot. When it comes off your foot right, you can tell if it has a chance to go in, which it did.”

The twin-tandem goal marked the second time the twins have been involved in the same scoring play. The first instance came in the 2021 spring season, also on Senior Night, against conference foe Georgia Southwestern University. Alyssa also scored off of an assist from Alexis on that occasion.

“I was going to shoot the ball, but I read the defense and heard Alyssa call for the ball,”

Alexis said. “She had the better spacing, so I passed the ball off.”

The soccer IQ among the sisters is impressive, to say the least.

The Bergamini twins excel at reading opposing defenses and their speeds, and they often judge the placement of goalkeepers to facilitate passes and shots.

The GC offense caught fire on Senior Night as two other Bobcat goals came in the match. Senior Cassie Balzano scored the team’s second goal in the 32nd minute.

Balzano received the pass from fellow senior Becca Morris. Morris, a defensive midfielder, captured a 50/50 header around the midfield mark to finesse the defense and get the pass to Balzano.

With that play, the Bobcats surged ahead 2-0.

Not even five minutes later, the third and final goal also came off the foot of Balzano. The senior soccer star is on the cusp of making history as she inches closer to second all-time in goals at GC. Balzano received the ball from speedy freshman Aralyn Everett for the scoring kick. Everett got the ball around the 50-yard mark on the right side of the field and dribbled downfield to get the pass off to Balzano. The goal put an exclamation point on a successful Senior Night

outing as GC clobbered the Mountain Lions in a one-sided 3-0 victory.

The dominant Senior Night win was extremely important to the seniors, and it could not have happened without Adams and her defense.

Adams made her presence known in every aspect of the game, getting steals and eliminating the spacing between opposing forwards, as well as rifling off two shots.

Morris also made her presence known throughout the match as she won a majority of her 50/50 balls in the midfield, helping the Bobcats to dominate time of possession. On top of her assist, she also had three shots and took the pressure off of her forwards.

Senior Ryann Smith led the Bobcats on the defensive side of the ball as the home team held Young Harris to six total shots. Smith constantly patrolled right outside of the GC 18-yard box to eliminate spacing and apply pressure to the Mountain Lion offense.

“Senior Night was such a good environment,” Alyssa said. “We played as a team. We played for each other, and that made all of the difference in the world.

Being able to score in one of my final matches as a Bobcat was amazing, especially since Alexis was on the assist.

As the season comes to a close, the Bobcats’ next game will mark the last time the GC seniors suit up in the blue and green and play together at home.

“The energy was so much fun to play in,” Alexis said. “Everyone on the team was positive and cheering for each other. Our parents were there, and it was an amazing night.”

The Bobcat seniors have bright futures ahead of them. Alyssa plans to attend postgraduate school to get a master’s degree in Kinesiology.

Meanwhile, Alexis will use her extra year of eligibility to play a fifth year at GC. She plans on earn-

ing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health with a minor in Management Information Systems.

Bobcats stumble in shutout loss Hayden Flinn Staff Writer The GC soccer team took their fifth loss of the season in a home game against Clayton State Wednesday Oct. 20. After falling to Lander 2-1 this past week, they currently sit as the sixth seed in the PBC with a record of 8-6.

The Bobcats started the game strong. Although possession of the ball proved fairly even to start, the Bobcats had good looks at goals early with a couple of shots that either just missed or were saved by the opposing goalkeeper.

Defensively, the Bobcats started the game off strong. Clayton State had a tough time penetrating the home team’s back defensive line early, which set up opportunities for GC. As the game progressed, Clayton State chipped away at the Bobcat defense as they found an opening midway through the first half.

The Lakers scored in the 18th minute of the first half after a cross to the middle of the field set up a strike for an oncoming forward.

While GC had possession of the ball longer than their opponent in the first half, the Bobcats found themselves trailing 1-0 heading into halftime.

Clayton State made the most of their limited opportunities as they were able to do the one thing the Bobcats couldn’t do all night: finish.

During their losses, finishing has proven a big struggle for the Bobcats.

They gained plenty of opportunities throughout the game but could not

seem to punch it in when they needed it most.

To open up the second half, Clayton State came out strong after scoring an early goal to go up 2-0 on the Bobcats. The score came off of a free kick where players were scrambling in the goalie box trying to get the ball out. With a few GC players out of position, the Lakers found an opening and punched it into the back of the net.

During the second half, Clayton State did a good job preventing the Bobcats from setting up plays. The Bobcats could no longer control the ball

like they wanted to as the Lakers put pressure on them all over the field.

Eventually, frustration started to settle in for the Bobcats.. By the end of the game, the two teams were extremely physical with one another.

The contest saw multiple cards given out, players leaving early due to injury and free kicks, as well as a penalty kick for the Lakers which they converted to move ahead 3-0.

By the end of the game, the Bobcats simply seemed tired. The Lakers had done a great job of wearing their de-

fense out all game long.

As the matchup neared its conclusion, the Bobcats moved away from their style of play in an effort tot pull off a crazy comeback. Unfortunately, the team could not do so as they fell to Clayton State 3-0.

“I think we’re in the depths of the season, so it’s just all about coming out and playing 90 minutes each game,” said junior team captain Brooke Adams. “We have to make sure we come fully prepared for each game.”

Throughout the game, the referees made a few question-

able calls that affected the focus of the players.

“I think we were just in our heads too much today, and we were our worst enemies tonight,” said head coach Tinna Gallagher. “We just got frustrated over things that we can’t control, and that hurt us, so we need to do a better job being mentally tough.”

With two games left on their schedule, the Bobcats look to end their season on a good note. Their next game comes Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Queens in their last home game of the regular season.

Bobcats battle at home tournament but walk away winless Sean King

Contributing Writer Over the weekend, the GC volleyball team hosted the Peach Belt and South Atlantic Conference Crossover Tournament. The Bobcats faced the Mars Hill Mountain Lions on Friday afternoon and had a very intense opening match.

The first set stayed close the entire time as neither team led by more than four points. The Bobcats were consistently down by one or two points for the first half of the set until they came up with three big time defensive points to take a 15-14 lead. Despite their strong defense, the Bobcats went on to lose the close set 25-21.

The Bobcats suffered a slow start in the second but regained momentum with a big block by middle back Sarah Mangan to tie the score of the set at 8-8. Unfortunately, the visiting Mountain Lions pulled away and took the second set 25-18.

The Bobcats came into the third set and went the first 10 points without scoring. How-

ever, the team was able to win the next six consecutive points to make a thrilling comeback.

Halfway through the set, the team tied it up at 15-15 and brought the crowd to their feet.

While the Bobcats did lose the third set 25-22, they demonstrated exemplary mental strength and toughness with their comeback push. Despite her squad’s defeat, head coach Gretchen Krumdieck expressed pride and optimism after the match.

“We do that sometimes where we just get down a little bit and it kinda gets away from us, but getting back out of it was really good for us mentally,” Krumdieck said. “We just needed to close it out. I think we didn’t start out great this last match, but we finished so much better and looked like such a different team. I’m pretty pumped, and our record does not show how good I think we are. We just gotta stay in the process. They’re fighting all the time, and they’re not giving up, so that’s encouraging.”

the Bobcats took on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears and got off to a slow start. The Bobcats lost the first set 25-12 and lost the second 25-14 as they found themselves in a hole.

After the second set, the team had a minute to talk over their strategy, and they came together in the third set. The Bobcats took an early five-point lead and maintained the advantage for the entire set, winning it 25-20.

The Bobcats went on to dominate the fourth set with another big 2520 win, tying the match at two sets apiece. They made some great plays in the fifth set but ended up losing 15-5. After two more losses on Saturday, GC finished the weekend tournament with an 0-4 record.

One of the most pivotal players in the Lenoir-Rhyne match was senior setter Lauren

Talele, who went down on her ankle early in the second set but bounced back up almost instantly.

After the match concluded, she explained what went through her head on the impressive play.

“I needed to get up and help my team, no question about it,” Talele said. “One of the refs said ‘You’re hurt,’ and I said, ‘No, I’m not.’ I was gonna stay in the game and play.

If Talele hadn’t made the decision to get back up and fight, the game may have gone much

Spooky cinimatic favorites sure to send shivers down your spine Rebecca Meghani Staff Writer As Halloween approaches, everyone is preparing for the thrill of the day through all spooky aspects. The popularity of the horror genre has only grown because people love the sensations that they derive from it. Students lean more into horror during October, the spookiest month of the year, and celebrate the day as much as they can.

Most commonly, people get their excitement through horror films.

They have hooked audiences with the effects that these horror elements have on people.

Though the popularity of horror is continuously rising, people often prefer films over books. For some, it is about the experience that one receives from watching films.

“It’s really about the atmosphere of the mov-

With the increasing interest in horror rising, so have the number of horror films. In recent years, many new films, adaptations, and versions have shown up. Opinions vary on new versions because of the horror preference that people have.

“Most of the time, a remake is going to be an American version of an internal film and a majority of those remakes are going to be absolute garbage.” said Jack Howle, a sophomore political science and economics major, “Take the German film Funny Games, a horror movie designed to make you glued to the screen.

New versions of horror films have been highly criticized when comparing them to the original.

“For the most part, in the early 2010s, they were taking all these R-rated movies from the 1980s and 1970s and turning them into PG13.” said Dr. Alex Blazer, “They weren’t better, they were more mass-marketed and whitewashed or sanitized.”

While some are not fans of the new versions, there are others that believe new versions have potential to be good.

“Some newer horror film versions like IT is better than the older version IT,” said Jesse Butler, junior accounting major, “But in some cases, like Friday the 13th and Halloween, the classics are better.”

While there is much to be said about the topic, sometimes it is best to just enjoy what we have.
