Newly-formed student band High Speed Dream performs at the Battle of the Bands event on Feb. 8.

Student band High Speed Dream wins competition, will open for Flo Rida at Homecoming concert Jaylon Brooks Asst. News Editor GC had its annual Battle of the Bands on Feb. 8. The groups, led by GC students, competed for the chance to open for Flo Rida at the Homecoming Concert on Feb. 25. The event was planned by the Campus Activities Board, held at the Magnolia Ballroom and judged by GC students. The competition was made up of three bands: High Speed Dream, Subject to Change and Parking Garage. Each group was given

15-20 minutes to perform their own selection of songs. Afterward, they were judged according to a set of criteria: technical skill, material used, stage presence, audience reaction and whether or not the performers seemed to be enjoying themselves. “The event was awesome,” said Walter Kelly, junior business management major. “It was great to see a bunch of different bands play, each with their own style.” High Speed Dream was the first band to perform. Emma Gullo, senior theatre

major, was the band’s lead singer. The band played a list of covers, featuring “Black Magic Woman” by Santana and “Superstitious” by Stevie Wonder. High Speed Dream was created three weeks before the competition, with Gullo having been introduced to the group through a mutual friend she met while working at Buffington’s. Despite not having known each other long, Gullo stated that she felt See BANDS | Page 2

Hannah Adams Staff Writer Although commonly advertised for celebrating those in relationships, Valentine’s Day is simply a day dedicated to love. This love covers many categories, ranging from a celebration of the romantic love between those in relationships to the love shared between people in friendships and for themselves. Despite the general outlook of society, those not in a relationship have an equal right to celebrating the holiday. Single individuals can take this time to choose a more positive outlook this year, and spend the day enjoying some self-care while celebrating the love they share with friends and family. Being single is a phase in life where an individual can capitalize on their own ambitions and spend more time on themselves. While taking this time for themselves, they can improve and achieve goals they were unable

to before. For some, this can look like working out, eating healthily or pursuing a new hobby. Grace Williams, a junior mass communication major, is excited for Valentine’s Day this year because she will be spending it surrounded by some of her closest friends. “I would say that I’m most excited to be able to hang out with some of my friends,” Williams said. “Whether they have a significant other or not, it’s still going to be fun to be with them and to kind of be able to do normal things and not have to worry about anyone else being around all the time. This isn’t a bad thing but I’m looking forward to hanging out with some friends during that time.” For Williams, spending Valentine’s Day as a single person is an exciting new prospect. She is looking forward to spending time in the company of those See V-DAY | Page 7

GC takes on top-dog Tampa Keller Pantsari

Contributing Writer GC Baseball took on top-ranked Tampa in their first three-game series of the season on Feb. 5 and 6. Energy and confidence were high from the players as they prepared to take on an exciting challenge. Unfortunately, the Bobcats struggled in their first game of the series as they trailed 9-0 at the bottom of the third inning.

The Bobcats stopped the bleeding in the fourth inning, scoring 3 runs of their own. Senior Sam Sly got things rolling for the Bobcats after doubling to centerfield. Sly advanced to third following another double from senior catcher Austin Holloway and scored later in the inning on an RBI-groundout to the second baseman hit by sophomore Brandon Bellflower. Holloway was then brought home after a single from Matthew Chester. The Bob-

cats scored their final run of the inning after a single to rightfield by freshman Dominic Arienzo, scoring Chester from second base. Freshman pitcher Aiden McConnell took the mound to pitch for the Bobcats in the fourth inning, and it did not take him long to find his groove and step up to the challenge. McConnell entered the game as a relief pitcher See BASEBALL | Page 4
