INFORMATION FOR SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN JOINING A TRUST

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

“We work together, as The Collegiate Trust, to deliver the very best life chances for our pupils and students. To achieve this, we know that we must be a great employer to our team of 700+ staff, determined custodians of the facilities we hold on behalf of our communities, and role models for how to deliver the very best education for the 3- to 18-year-olds that attend our schools. Working in a school brings with it an awesome responsibility; working in a trust helps our staff to deliver on that responsibility.

We created TCT in 2015, out of a belief that the quality and success of Riddlesdown Collegiate enabled us to bring together other schools that would benefit from high quality collaboration. Since then, we have grown to become a family of seven schools in South London and West Sussex. Our approach to growth is not driven by a desire to be the biggest but by a determination to make a difference.

WHO ARE WE?

The Collegiate Trust grew out of Riddlesdown Collegiate, an Outstanding secondary school in Croydon. Now a family of seven schools in Croydon and Crawley, we are a charitable organisation with a sole purpose of delivering great education.

Our Trust is run by school leaders for the benefit of our communities and families, pupils and students, and staff.

We work together in order to achieve better and more rapid development than we might achieve as individual schools. This is summed up in our mission statement: Collaboration to deliver exceptional education

Our ambition for our collaboration is to offer the very best experience to every young person in our schools. This is summed up in our vision statement: Exceptional education for all

We believe that there are three key features to an exceptional education:

1. All pupils and students achieve their very best academically

2. All pupils and students benefit from a school experience that is rich in creative, cultural and physical learning opportunities

3. Schools invest in the personal and social development of each young person

OUR GROWTH HIERARCHY

SCALE is at the top of this hierarchy, not because it is the most important but because it is the most visible aspect of growth. We are looking for the right partners to join our Trust, schools that will add value and achieve benefit from working with like-minded colleagues. We have ambitions to grow to 12-15 schools by 2025.

The middle layer of our hierarchy covers the ACTIVITY that we choose to deliver ourselves in order to guarantee quality. This ranges from staff development and training to our catering and IT services.

The foundation of our hierarchy, the most important part of our growth agenda, is COHESION between our schools. This does not mean all doing the same but focuses on the development of new expertise through collaborative work – the partnership dividend.

» promote an exceptional and broad curriculum – within and beyond the classroom – which builds the strongest qualities in pupils and students across the Trust.

» support the development of leadership (including governance) and management through high quality collaboration, focused support and challenge, and partnership. We deliver our own suite of NPQ courses.

» support staff development across the whole of the curriculum, through expert facilitation of collaboration to develop new and next practice. This includes direct delivery of the Early Career Framework.

» centralise a range of non-teaching activities (eg. financial monitoring, audit, payroll, HR, governance support, estates management, marketing & communications) to ensure focus by Local Governing Bodies (LGBs) and Principals on pupil and student learning, development and achievement, and to deliver improved value for money within that central spend.

» deliver capital investment which provides the best possible facilities for students and staff across the Trust.

» achieve a partnership dividend – exceptional education for all within the partnership – as a result of collaboration.

WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED?

There are numerous, measurable ways in which our schools have developed and improved since joining The Collegiate Trust and each school in our partnership is achieving higher standards than before joining. We welcome the opportunity to share these with you in more detailed discussions.

The following case studies are typical of our work:

1. THREE EXAMPLES OF OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

Our host school has improved from OFSTED satisfactory in 2009, to good in 2012, then outstanding in 2015. Since then, standards at GCSE and A Level have continued to rise and the school has achieved World Class status.

Gossops Green Primary joined us in 2016 with consecutive requires improvement judgements from OFSTED. In September 2019 the school achieved a good judgement, with outstanding Early Years and outstanding leadership & management

The Quest Academy joined us in 2018 and has continued to deliver amongst the best progress scores nationally

2. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Curriculum development is at the heart of our schools’ work. Each school has prioritised the development of a rich, broad and academic curriculum, which responds to the needs of learners in the community.

Colleagues across Key Stage 1 have worked collaboratively to ensure that teaching and learning in phonics delivers rapid progress to develop reading and writing skills

In Key Stage 2 we have developed our Maths Framework, to support teachers in identifying and addressing misconceptions

Two of our primary schools and one of our secondary schools are developing the use of Accelerated Reader

Our sixth forms are preparing for our first Post-16 Conference in 2022

We constantly develop our curriculum offer to enable learners to gain an appreciation and understanding of creative, performing and physical arts, promoting leadership and engaging through an extensive range of trips and visits.

3. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Our network of school leaders has regular opportunities to collaborate and support one another to develop the best educational approaches.

The annual Governance Development Day brings together local governors, trustees and members to work with senior colleagues in

developing effective governance practice

We deliver NPQML and NPQSL in partnership with UCL Institute of Education

Across the Trust there is an excellent programme of formal and informal coaching and mentoring to support from early career up to senior leadership

Cohesive working across the trust provides our leaders with opportunities to broaden and develop wider leadership skill. Leaders who demonstrate improvement and impact in their area of responsibility will support other leaders to implement and replicate the most successful strategies.

4. IT STRATEGY

We have built one network for the entire Trust so that you can log on securely in any of our schools and have access to all of your files and resources.

Our five year, 2.5 million pound IT strategy ensures that each school’s infrastructure and hardware is up to date and highly responsive, with state of the art terminals and interactive screens in every teaching space supporting creative learning and better outcomes year on year.

Our central team of IT professionals provide expert support to our schools ensuring a resilient and robust network that allows for a hassle free teaching experience, while a small MIS team uses full remote SIMS integration and analytics to provide accessible data to inform improvement planning.

HOW DOES GOVERNANCE OPERATE WITHIN TCT?

Exceptional education within TCT is driven by a strong Local Governing Body in each school. Whilst the Trustees are legally accountable for all schools in the Trust, the Scheme of Delegation places a clear responsibility for leadership of the school on local governors, through which each school maintains its clear and separate identity.
