Town Council begins year with new leadership, plans for police station New ordinances establish land-use taxation, collection of delinquent fees or taxes, and vacation of town-owned utility and landscape easements.

At the first Blacksburg Town Council meeting of the year on Tuesday, Jan. 9, four women took the oath of office to join the governing body. Susan Anderson, Lauren Colliver and Susan Mattingly were sworn in as council members after winning their seats in November’s election, and Leslie Hager-Smith was sworn in as Blacksburg’s first female mayor.

The oaths of office were administered in a symbolic gesture by Mary Houska, a former professor at Hollins University who received a doctorate in economics from MIT. She has lived in the same home in Blacksburg since 1964 and served as president of the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County for many years after joining in 2000.

Anderson and Hager-Smith are veterans of the Town Council, but Colliver and Mattingly are new. Their election leaves four women on the council and two men. A seat on the seven-member council remains open because of Hager-Smith’s election as mayor.

According to Hager-Smith, the council plans to appoint a new member in the coming weeks.

The Blacksburg Town Charter allows the council to fill that seat until the next election in 2019 by a majority vote of the members. A comparable situation occurred in 2006 when Mary Holliman filled Ron Rordam’s seat after he was elected mayor.

At the conclusion of the public meeting, the council went into a closed session to discuss potential candidates as well as threatened litigation over leases on the town-owned North Main Street water tank to internet service providers.

As per the town charter, the council elected a vice mayor at the start of the meeting. The vice mayor can serve as acting

mayor if needed or replace the mayor in the period between elections. The council members unanimously voted Anderson as vice mayor, replacing Hager-Smith who had served in that capacity last year.

The council also voted unanimously to approve several ordinances during the meeting. One permitted the town to use collection agencies or attorneys to collect delinquent fees or taxes from residents in exceptional circumstances. Two ordinances vacated town-owned utility and landscape easements near development projects that have been approved or under review, allowing them to proceed.

Another ordinance established land use taxation, which allows the town to charge owners of certain types of agricultural, open space or forested land (determined by the Montgomery County Commissioner of the Revenue) at a lower rate. This is designed to discourage landowners from selling to developers and preserve undeveloped areas.

According to Town Attorney Larry Spencer, landowners would owe roll back taxes in case the use of the property changes.

Town Manager Marc Verniel made a presentation to the council about the town’s proposed Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for the next five fiscal years and opened the floor to comment. The plan gives estimations of the major expenses that the town expects to incur in the next five years.

The most significant project included is a new police station to address overcrowding in the current facility. At this time, the town is considering putting the new station on the old Blacksburg Middle School property on North Main Street. However, this is conditional on several factors — plans to turn the rest of the property into a mixed-use development are still awaiting approval. The CIP budgets $16.5 million for design and construction.

Also included in the CIP are $9.375 million for the design and construction of a new town-owned parking deck on Progress Street and several hundred thousand for improving streetscapes downtown. @Jones_MattRyan

A salad bar renovation and more grab-n-go options are scheduled to come to Owens, according to Dining Services. Multiple shops will relocate to increase operation efficiency and decrease wait times for students.

They gave us feedback over the last couple years, and that kind of gave us a little bit of direction in what path we are going down the road.”

Flip’s will be moved to the space where Philly City is currently located.

The space where Flip’s is currently located will become a weekly rotating bowl concept. There will be three types of menus: Korean, Mediterranean and Thai. According to Grove, all of the menus were inspired by popular Mediterranean and Asian fast food restaurants. The Korean menu was inspired by Bibibop Asian Grill, which is known for its Korean-style rice bowl, while the Mediterranean and Thai menus were inspired by Cava, a fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant and Tom Yum District, which serves Thai-flavored rice and noodle bowls.

In addition, Grove said there is a possibility that the new place will be able to serve sushi and breakfast.

According to Grove, Flip’s will replace Philly City and absorb its menu items. However, Dining Services is still studying whether the cooking systems at Philly City can handle cooking some of the menu items at Flip’s.

Bowl Dynasty will receive some changes to its menu. Dining Services will keep the popular items, such as General Tso’s chicken, and incorporate

new items, which were inspired by Honeygrow, a popular chain fast food restaurant.

Carvery and Lotsa Pasta will receive a new look as well as some changes to their menus.

La Cantina will be renovated to increase its operational efficiency. Grove described the current operation at La Cantina as “dysfunctional,” and said the changes in the future will get people in and out quicker.

According to Faulkner, the renovation of Owens is something that Dining Services has been thinking about for a long time.

“Owens has been in discussion for at least since 2008 with regards to some updating and retrofitting. We have put an addition to West End Market that opened

Owens Food Court will see new changes in the near future. The 27-year-old dining hall will receive two renovations in the next two summers.

Originally opened in 1991, Owens Food Court is located in Owens Hall, which was built in 1939. According to the VT dining website, the Owens Dining Center received its name from longtime university mess steward J.J. “Pops” Owens and won the Bronze Award from the American School and University magazine for outstanding interior design in 1992. Currently, there are 12 shops in Owens Food Court.

According to Brian Grove, associate director of Dining Services, there will be two phases in the renovation process that will take place in the summer of 2018 and the summer of 2019.

In the first phase, the university will remodel the salad bar currently located in the center of the food court. According to Grove, it will change the appearance of the salad bar and open the space up.

“It will showcase the food court in a better manner by removing that big island in the high tower that sits above that salad bar,” said Ted Faulkner, director of Dining Services.

Pho bowls, which are a Vietnamese dish made of soup, noodles and meat, will also be served at the salad bar. The pho bowls are currently served at Bowl Dynasty.

More grab-and-go options will also be added to the food court.

“We know times are changing.

Students want to come in, grab, go, and get back out, and we are trying to be a little more efficient,” Grove said. “We’ve seen great success with the new graband-go area in West End Market, so we are gonna kind of play off of that, and expand that line here in the food court as well.”

In the second phase of the renovation,

the whole backline of the food court will receive a brand new look. Some shops will be relocated. Dining Services will also add more items to the menus at each shop.

“The backline is probably the biggest expansion project that we will do in there,” Grove said. “It’s kind of exciting to see that one coming into play.”

his is the time of year when we’re all told to be reflective, so I will — for a while — even if I don’t think it is wholly necessary.

The year 2017 has become a meme of sorts — people poke fun at how supposedly awful the year has been, and it’s not hard to see why. There have been mass shootings, humanitarian crises, terrorist attacks; North Korea might be able to strike the United States with a nuclear warhead. Climate change continues to take its toll, with 2017 yet again on pace to be one of the hottest years in Earth’s history.

Politics, depending on your views, may have contributed as well. Repealing net neutrality was mostly panned by the general public. And with President Donald Trump in office, nearly every policy decision has been extremely polarizing, from nominating and appointing a new member of the Supreme Court to initiating tax reform. His volatility on the international stage, especially, has many people worried for what the future has in store.

For me personally, the year has had its ups and downs. I lacerated my vocal chord not too long ago, and couldn’t talk normally for eight weeks. I had personal and family medical scares, among other troubles. Even here at the Collegiate Times, I’ve been subject to quite a bit of backlash from readers in the past few months.

But there’s been some good too, both personally and big picture, though I won’t get into that. No one really talks about what went well in the year during this time. It’s all about what went wrong, and how things could be better in the new year. The celebration of New Year’s is centered around the idea of a clean slate.

No matter what happened in the past 365 days, the next 365 could be the best of your life.

Though, the whole concept of a new year being a turning point is kind of ridiculous. Historians all disagree on periods of history, and when the divides in time actually take place. It really doesn’t mean much of anything, though. Periods of time exist to give us a better, if more flawed, understanding of the world, and for no other reason. Years are really no different.

I just watched “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” for the first time, and if you haven’t seen it, the premise is this: Scott, a nerdy 22-year-old, needs to defeat his dream girl’s seven evil exes in order to date her. Now you’re probably asking what a ridiculous movie like that has to do with New Year’s. Well, while it’s a crazy movie, its message is poignant and completely relevant: Everyone has baggage, and it’s difficult to get away from the past sometimes. As the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, 2018, life will go on just as it has any other day. The problems we all have had in the previous year are still there.

But that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be cause to celebrate. Think of all the good things that happened in 2017, to you, your family and friends, and the world at large, and how those could all continue into 2018. Think of how great 2018 will be, not just how much better it might be than what’s come before. Even without the clean slate so many people cherish, life will go on.

content, Spotify just doesn’t match up to Apple Music. Because Apple Music has deals with big artists like Drake and Taylor Swift, it often gets albums before anyone else. For example, Drake’s 2016 album “Views” was only available on Apple Music during its initial release.

Celebrities having brand deals with streaming services can be frustrating, and everything would be a lot easier if everyone just put their music on every streaming service at the same time. For now, the best way to alleviate that stress is to get Apple Music.

Another aspect of Apple Music that many people don’t discuss is how the lyrics to every song are directly below it, ready to be read. For me, knowing every word to my favorite songs is very important. It can get frustrating to constantly have to look up lyrics on the internet, or open up Genius to search the song. Luckily, Apple Music makes it easy for me to sing along to every song in my library.

Thanks to streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify, we have the ability to listen to millions of songs within seconds. But which streaming service is the best? Even though Spotify and Apple Music both have their advantages, Apple Music remains supreme when it comes to getting new music first.

Originally, I used Spotify’s free option to listen to music. I eventually became tired of hearing advertisements every three songs, so I decided to try Spotify Premium. I took full advantage of my premium membership for around three months. The most enjoyable aspect of Spotify was the Discover Weekly playlists which introduced me to a lot of new music. However, I became severely disappointed with Spotify when I figured out how low its library limit is:

From Jan. 16–28, the 2018 MLK Jr. Celebration Committee will be holding a competition in which students will be reciting original speeches in order to acknowledge the reverend’s birthday and honor his legacy.

Looking for a constructive way to spend your time during syllabus week?

The MLK Oration Competition, going on from Jan. 16–28, gives the community a chance to see some very talented Virginia Tech students recite original speeches to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. As the VT Cultural and Community Centers website states, the competition “is a celebration of self-understanding, integrity, and courageous leadership.”

Virginia Tech sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students are invited to apply for the competition, for which they were asked write, memorize and perform a speech inspired by given Dr. King quotes. The top four finalists in the competition will receive a cash prize of $500.

As chair of the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and assistant director of the Black Cultural Center, Kimberly Williams said that through the oration competition, “Our department wanted to instill a new student-centered tradition that evokes King’s legacy considering 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of his death in April.”

“We just really want to champion our talented Hokies and spotlight their intellection, performance and social justice.

This is our first year and we would like to further the awareness of King and critically harness his legacy as less of an abstraction and direct his representation into a new tradition,” Williams said.

Williams noted that in addition to

student speakers, semi-local activists tied to the Civil Rights Movement and even Rev. Dr. King himself will be spotlighted at the oration event. These individuals include Oliver Hill, a civil rights attorney from Richmond; King’s adviser, Pauli Murray, who was pivotal in black women and queer activism and Elizabeth Johnson Rice, who led a protest against a racist business in Norfolk, Virginia.

The MLK Oration Competition is a part of Virginia Tech’s celebration of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through “Hidden Figures: Community Practice of MLK.” This initiative includes a series of speeches, seminars and exhibitions from Jan. 16–28.

From the competition and other events, Williams hopes that Virginia Tech students continue to research King’s speeches, but wishes that there was more research done on his intersectional and international activism.

“I hope people learn more about King’s community partners and his family that also shaped him like the grace and tenacity of his wife, Coretta Scott King, who wrote Matthew Shepard’s parents a letter after his murder … I hope people realize that he was a man who loved jazz music, Aretha Franklin and his children, and that we are human, just like him, and can all continue his legacy if we try, fail and keep on trying,” Williams said.

The 2018 MLK Oration Committee was assembled “through surveying which campus partners could cultivate, bolster and support this idea through its infrastructure and support,” Williams stated.

In this, a talented and diverse group of

Virginia Tech faculty and staff members with expertise in communications, marketing, research, activism and more came together to compile and organize events to enrich the Virginia Tech community.

These events were also possible through support from the Department of Religion and Culture, Cultural and Community Centers, Virginia Tech Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, Residential College in West Ambler Johnston, Office of Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives and Student Affairs.

The Cassell Guard Executive Board has a list of things all students should do at a basketball game before graduating. Don’t be the person who doesn’t check off all the boxes — here’s what you need to know.

When asked what five things every student should do at a basketball game before graduating, here is what Khan suggested: Storming the court after a big upset win is the number one thing every Hokie should do.

Hold a Fathead during a game. These fatheads are passed out by the guards before each game, so you should get there at least 30 minutes early go snatch one up. Many of them feature the players’ faces, but others are more comical like the horse on the treadmill and Ron Burgundy.

Make it on the jumbotron during a game. You’re more likely to get on the screen if you remain standing during timeouts and dance whenever you get the opportunity.

Be a part of a funny chant. For

example, during some of the other team’s penalty shots, the executive board leads the “Ring of Fire” chant.

This is mimicked after the scene from “Finding Nemo” where the fish chant rhythmically, growing in volume, which continues until the shot is made or (preferably) missed.

“Go all out in being a part of Cassell Guard,” he concluded. “Be as loud as you can. Deck out in Hokie gear. Wear face paint.”

Being a part of Cassell Guard is not just joining the executive board, it is simply the act of going out to a basketball game and helping to defend our castle.

Students can get tickets to most games by entering the lottery; winners are awarded free tickets. Otherwise, men’s tickets are $20, and women’s are free.

As the “Home Alone” hero Kevin McCallister said: “This is my house. I have to defend it.” So goes the spirit of Cassell Guard, the student section at Virginia Tech basketball games.

As exemplified in last season’s sold-out Maroon Out game, the Cassell Guard can have a measurable effect on what happens on the court. During this home game in February, the men’s basketball team beat top 10 UVA. The student section was packed and electric, filling the Coliseum with an energy that helped motivate the team as it fought back from 14-points-down at the half to a double overtime victory.

Student representation at basketball games has been a tradition in Blacksburg for decades. Traditionally, students took a medieval castle theme, wearing Burger King crowns to games.

Cassell Guard as we know it began in 2009 when the Student Government Association launched a program to revamp the game-day spirit. This program included selecting 15 “Generals” of the Cassell Guard, students who would sit in the front row and lead the section in chants. These Guards were given free front row tickets that came with a strict attendance policy and responsibility to uphold Hokie Respect.

Today, the Guards are known as the Cassell Guard Executive Board. The board functions as a student organization, with students in leadership positions, a GobblerConnect page and representation at GobblerFest. They run promotional social media pages that post up-to-date information on women’s and men’s basketball in an effort to get students involved.

At an early-season men’s game against University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 10, the executive board led

a holiday theme that they had promoted over social media. Dawning their ugly holiday sweaters, tinsel and Santa hats, the members brought an extra ray of spirit to the game, which the Hokies won 93–40.

The students on the executive board participate in many other organizations at Virginia Tech, including Greek life and Relay for Life, and many also hold jobs. However, they dedicate a significant amount of time to basketball.

According to board member Zahid Khan, the time commitment can be substantial, since they are expected to attend every men’s game and at least 50 percent of women’s games, but is worth it. Khan, a junior, serves as the director of Women’s Basketball Promotions.

“I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

I’ve watched Virginia Tech basketball ever since I was a kid, and I saw those crazy fans in the front row and I’m like, ‘That’s gotta be me,’” Khan said. When

Virginia Tech had never won four consecutive bowl games in program history coming into its meeting with Oklahoma State (10–3) in the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28. That streak will live on after the Cowboys’ 30–21 victory.

Facing a high-powered Cowboys’ offense, the Hokies’ game plan was apparent from the start, and for the most part it played out the way they wanted it to. Virginia Tech (9–3) ran the ball 50 times for 248 yards while controlling the time of possession. The Hokies’ offense had the ball for 38:13, while Oklahoma State’s offense, led by senior quarterback Mason Rudolph, was on the field for 21:47.

Rudolph got his offense firing early as the Cowboys went right down the field on the opening possession. The drive would, however, stall and they settled for a 31-yard field goal.

Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson responded on the team’s opening drive. Jackson and running back Deshawn McClease led an eight-play, 76-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard touchdown run by Jackson.

The Hokies continued to control the tempo of the game into the second quarter, but the momentum turned after an 18-play drive ended with a Virginia Tech turnover.

After coming up just short of the end zone, the Hokies had the ball at the Cowboys’ 1-yard line. On first and goal, Jackson fumbled the ball on the exchange with running back Steven Peoples and Oklahoma State recovered the ball. According to Fuente, the play took just a little long to develop.

“Just a mesh that those two guys have made 10,000 times and just rode it a little bit long,” Fuente said. “That’s something

you feel really comfortable with doing because you’ve done it since day one and didn’t execute.”

That play went on to loom large later in the game even though the Virginia Tech defense held the Cowboys to just a field goal and maintained a 7–6 lead.

The lead would soon disappear courtesy of the Cowboys’ quick-strike offense. Rudolph connected on three consecutive passes, and running back Justice Hill finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Oklahoma State a 13–7 lead at the half.

“I don’t feel very good about this game. I think I missed too many throws.

I hopefully got better as the season went on, in some aspects,” he said.

After the game, redshirt-senior Andrew Motuapuaka spoke about his final game in a Hokies uniform.

“It was tough taking off that jersey and seeing the guys’ faces. We’re all family and we’ll be brothers for life.”

Fuente also had nothing but good things to say about his quiet leader.

“At times like this and with questions like that, I wish I was a better linguist. He doesn’t talk a lot, but he works his tail off.

It’s just an honor and a privilege to get to coach him and be around him on a daily basis,” he said.

Needing a quick response, the Hokies showed their grit with a nine-play drive of their own. On third and goal at the 9-yard line, Jackson found receiver Eric Kumah, who took the ball away from the defender for a touchdown. Kumah finished with five receptions for 72 yards.

However, it didn’t take long for the Cowboys to answer. On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, Rudolph went deep for receiver James Washington, connecting on a 65-yard touchdown pass. Rudolph finished the night 21–32 for 351 yards.

Defensive coordinator Bud Foster was asked postgame about whether Rudolph and the Cowboys’ offense was as good as advertised.

“We mixed in a lot of different coverages tonight and that just goes back to his experience. They are as good as advertised,” he said.

Foster spoke about the breakdown

after the game.

“We were scrambling just a little.

They went up-tempo and just caught it.

That guy (Washington) is going to get his catches,” he said.

Virginia Tech kept grinding away after a defensive stop. Jackson came back and led the Hokies down the field before running in his second touchdown of the night. He finished with 16 carries for 50 yards.

Needing a big stop from its defense and trailing 27–21, Virginia Tech had the Cowboys at third and 11, but Hill broke off a 31-yard run which set up a 38-yard field goal for Oklahoma State. With that kick, the Cowboys led 31–20 with just 2:34 remaining.

Virginia Tech would get within striking distance, but Jackson’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete and the Cowboys held on for the win.

There will be more holes to fill in Bud Foster’s defense this fall than many previously thought.

On Wednesday, Terrell and Tremaine Edmunds announced via Twitter that they would be declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft.

The announcement by the former Dan River High School standouts opens more voids in a defense that has already lost defensive lineman Tim Settle, who announced he was headed to the draft last week, as well as departing seniors Andrew Motuapuaka, Greg Stroman and Brandon Facyson.

Tremaine departs after a junior season in which he received All-American accolades and was a finalist for the Butkus Award, which is given to the best linebacker in the country. He led the Hokies in 2017 with 109 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, and five and a half sacks. Tremaine concludes his career in the maroon and orange with 226 tackles, 35 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks.

The Danville, Virginia native also becomes only the sixth Hokie since 1987 to have recorded 100 tackles in backto-back seasons joining the likes of Jack Tyler, Vince Hall, Mikal Baaqee, Ben Taylor and George DelRicco.

Many speculate that the 6-foot-5, 250-pound linebacker is among the best players in the draft. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper has Tremaine as the 14th best player in the draft, while his colleague Todd McShay has him ranked 31st.

If the projections hold true, Tremaine would be the first Hokie to go in the first round since the Bears selected Kyle Fuller with the 14th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Elder brother Terrell departs after a redshirt-junior season in which he was

named to the third team All-ACC after compiling 59 tackles and two interceptions before missing the final three games of the season due to shoulder surgery. The former Dan River Wildcat standout started for the Hokies for three seasons. He also was named as an honorable mention All-ACC in 2016.

Terrell wraps up his career in Blacksburg with 182 tackles, 14 pass breakups and six interceptions.

The defensive back graduated with a degree in multimedia journalism this past December.

Terrell joins Antone Exum, Brandon Flowers, DeAngelo Hall, Jimmy Williams and Willie Pile as the only Hokies since 1987 to have at least 150 tackles, five interceptions and 20 passes defended through their junior season.

Some feedback has shown that the defensive back could go as high as the second or third round.

The duo will try to become the first set of brothers to be drafted in the same year since David and Chris Carter in 2011.

The former Dan River High School standouts will try to add to the family lineage in the NFL. Older brother Trey Edmunds, who played for Virginia Tech from 2012–15 before transferring to Maryland in 2016, currently plays for the New Orleans Saints. Their father Ferrell played for seven seasons in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1989 and 1990 as a member of the Dolphins.

Out of the many brothers who have came through Virginia Tech, perhaps the Edmunds have had one of the greatest impacts.

native became the head coach at his alma mater, Virginia Tech. Throughout his tenure, he compiled a 238–121–2 record.

His 238 wins are the most in school history.

Beamer’s Hokies finished in the top 10 five times and won 10 games in 13 seasons, as well as winning three Big East championships and four ACC championships.

Having only been to six bowl games prior to his arrival, Beamer guided the program to 23 bowl games in as many seasons. The Hokies won 11 of those, including wins in the 1995 Sugar Bowl and the 2009 Orange Bowl.

In 1999, the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Famer earned National Coach of the Year awards as he led the Hokies to a National Championship appearance at the conclusion of Tech’s first ever 11-win season and the first undefeated regular season in school history.

The five-time conference Coach of the Year will join former Tech head coaches Andy Gustafson and Jerry Claiborne and players Hunter Carpenter, Carroll Dale, Frank Loria and Bruce Smith as Hokies who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Beamer Way has left a tremendous impact not only on Virginia Tech, but college football. Perhaps the most recent being the 2018 Rose Bowl, where Beamer’s son Shane’s special teams unit at the University of Georgia had its own edition of “Beamerball.”

While the accomplishments of the former Hillsville High School quarterback are lengthy, perhaps the latest one could be the greatest.

Throughout a coaching career that changed Blacksburg forever, Frank Beamer has accumulated a long list of accomplishments.

On Monday, the coach that led the Hokies into Lane Stadium for 29 seasons received another notch in his belt when the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame announced that the former Virginia Tech head football coach has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 in his first year on the ballot.

“I’d like to thank our administration and former Virginia Tech players, coaches and support staff,” Beamer said in a press release Monday. “Without them, we wouldn’t have enjoyed the success we did as a football program.”

The 2018 class will be inducted during the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, 2018, at the New York Hilton Midtown. The honorees will be inducted

shortly after at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Beamer joins the likes of former Texas coach Mack Brown, 1997 Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson, former Miami safety Ed Reed and former Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson in the 2018 class.

Over the course of a 35-year head coaching career, Beamer accumulated 280 wins, which ranks sixth in FBS history and is 13th best among a college football coach at any NCAA level.

At the time of his 2015 retirement, the Virginia Sports Hall of Famer was the winningest active coach in FBS history.

The former Virginia Tech defensive back was an assistant coach at Maryland, The Citadel and Murray State before being promoted to head coach at Murray State, where he led the Racers to a 42–23–2 record from 1981–86. His time in Kentucky was highlighted by a trip to the FCS playoffs in which the Racers also held a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title.

It’s everyone’s favorite part of going to a football game in Lane Stadium.

You’re waiting, you’re waiting, and then you hear those first few notes of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and the whole stadium knows what’s about to go down. There’s a palpable energy you can feel in your feet and you start jumping.

But why? Why do we jump and why do we do it to “Enter Sandman”?

Well, back in 2000, Lane Stadium was renovated and a new scoreboard was installed. The athletic department thought, “new scoreboard, new entrance video.” The department considered many songs, before settling on the one and only “Enter Sandman.”

The song was first played on August 27, 2000, against Georgia Tech. ESPN College GameDay was there and this game became known as “The Lightning Bowl,” because a thunderstorm hit Blacksburg after the teams entered the stadium but before kickoff.

And the jumping? Well, before one particularly cold night game that first season the song was used, a couple Marching Virginians started jumping up and down to keep warm before the team’s entrance. Soon the whole band was jumping — and when the rest of the stadium caught on, none of them ever stopped. @Meade_Katelyn
