I'm sure we've all heard the saying “All good things must come to an end” and at one point we all wished that the inevitability of change would never come. Well, the revival and production of the Collegian Newspaper for the last academic year has been nothing short of a good thing. Although The Collegian will continue, the time has come to hand the editor in chief and other titles over to the leaders who will shine after us. Thank you to Mrs Greaves, Ms Wade, The Harrison College PTA, Harrison College Alumni and Harrison College staff for making this experience so enjoyable for the team and for the unwavering support.

Our 2021-2022 Team has produced three successful issues which only signifies the beginning of its legacy filled journey. As I, Hannah Sealey say goodbye to my post as editor in chief, Ella Emtage Deane, Zan Valere, Kenya James and Christiane Hennis bid adieu to their roles as editors. Along with Nia Morris, Macaria Thorpe and Keilani Talma saying “so long” to their roles as reporters while Rheanna Griffin and Nina Barshini pass on their roles as writer and graphic artist, respectively, we will never forget the experience of working with the Collegian Journalist Team. We assure you that the newspaper will be in capable hands with Zaria Elcock as editor in chief and her team in the upcoming school year!

Key Club The Key Club’s motto is "Caring for our way of life". This club is the largest student lead service organization in the world which seeks to give back to the community by helping others in need. The members demonstrate the core values of Key Club which are leadership, service, character building, and inclusiveness.

The 2021-2022 President of the Harrison College Key Club is Micah Williams of Upper Six. He shared the current activities of the club. Currently, they are carrying out a mentorship program not only within the club but within the school called the ‘Kolij Support Squad’, which they have already initiated.

Key clubbers are mentors to younger students throughout the school so that they can not only guide them in their studies but give them advice, for example, assistance with finding suitable tertiary education and personal growth. Additionally, the club participated in a Key Club District Grocery Drive. To accomplish this, they collaborated with organizations and Key Clubs around Barbados, to register names of families or persons who need help and groceries and other essentials were donated to them. The groceries were packaged by members and given back to the organizations to be distributed out to the families.

Key Club continues to demonstrate the resilience of the youth and Harrisonians as they continue to strive through the challenges posed by the restrictions of Covid-19. The members have been meeting online every Wednesday from 4:30 pm-5:30 pm. Even though it is not their most ideal situation, they are still able to enjoy their icebreakers and meet their goals thus far.

"New members are always a necessity as a lot of the club’s members were in the past graduating class and we are just trying to rebuild that Key Club spirit", the president pointed out. Furthermore, more members are graduating soon, therefore, those interested in joining the Key Club family and sharing the zeal to serve others are directed to contact any of the following Key Club 2022-2023 officials to state their interest: President Gabrielle Charles-Soomer -

Keisha Belgrave - Ms Belgrave particularly likes teaching C.A.P.E Mathematics because she finds it is a more interactive side of Math and it is easier to engage with students as most students are keener about the subject at that stage. She has been teaching at Harrison College for 18 years so far.

When asked what her second choice for a job would be, she said that she could see herself being a doctor or more specifically a paediatrician. She also believes that teaching has helped her to develop better skills in relating and interacting with people.

Sean Hunte - Mr Hunte is the one teacher that you may spot walking around the school, with a backpack on. He expressed that in another life he may have been a pastor instead of a teacher. His least favourite part of math is the counting aspect of Mathematics.

When asked how he would change the style of how Math is taught in schools, Mr Hunte suggested that the implementation of technology and devices in the subject would be easier and make learning more interactive.

Natasha Greenidge - Mrs Greenidge is the acting First Form Year Head. She likes to garden and tends to her plants often. She is a strong believer that all students need to have a structure in their lives to excel. Mrs Greenidge has been teaching for 23 years, 4 of those years being at Harrison College.

Her best experience as a teacher is when past students come back and see her and thank her for her contributions to their lives. When asked what she would change about the current school system, she revealed that similar to the proposed Academies of Excellence, she would let students go to a school focused on their interests.

B M S- N EW S L E TisTone E Rof the many Joslyn Persaud Mrs Persaud Mathematics teachers that you may see around the school. Apart from normal school times, she enjoys and appreciates working with students on study leave, who take time out to work on their weak areas in the subject. When asked what other subject she may have gone into, Mrs Persaud revealed that when she thinks about it she always sees French as the subject that she would most likely be able to go into, although she said this reality is only expressed in her head. Finally, one thing that you may not know about her is that when she is not marking math papers and planning lessons, she is most likely doing one thing, watching K-Dramas.

Peter St.Hill - Mr St.Hill has been teaching for 26 years splitting his time between Queen’s College and Harrison College. He prioritizes taking in nature and bird watching when he can and being away from the hustle and bustle of life in his free time.

His favourite topic in Math is Calculus and in particular how it is applied. He also believes that more information and communication technology would boost the efficiency of teaching mathematics in schools, such as using projectors in schools and internet access allowing students to see videos and online resources that he is presenting in real-time.

Latoya Watkins - Ms Watkins chose to become a teacher because of her particular love for teaching and children. Professionally, she has been teaching for 9 years at various schools such as The Ursuline Convent, The St.Michael School, and of course Harrison College. When asked what her favourite experience being a teacher is, she revealed that she truly enjoys it when she teaches a topic to students that have little to no prior knowledge of the subject and they leave the class grasping the topic fully.

Her aim in teaching is “To never leave anybody behind”

Patrick Cadogan (Head of the Deparment) - Mr Cadogan initially wanted to be an Accountant but after studying the sciences at University, he decided to pursue a career in Mathematics. Mr Cadogan’s favourite topic in Math is Algebra because he finds that it sets the foundation for other Math topics, even at much higher levels. He had short stints of teaching at The Ursuline Convent and Coleridge and Parry School before settling in HC, 29 years ago. He also stated that he has always had a love for numbers, and from secondary school, he knew that his future career would be numbers-based. When asked what he would change about how math is taught he stated, he would increase the amount of contact time with students, like extra revision classes and time to reinforce the topics taught.

WHY SHOULD I START COMPOSTING?

Advice from the Environmental Club.

Besides reducing the amount of garbage you have to take out at the end of the week, here are some beneficial reasons to start composting!

ITS A NATURAL FERTILIZER- You can use the compost, in turn, to nourish future plants, trees or crops replacing the need for fertilizer.

IT REDUCES COSTS- You can ease your parents' wallets or your own since you have a natural homemade fertilizer.

REDUCES GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS- Did you know that when we send our waste to the landfill, the waste is decomposed anaerobically? Which means it decomposes without the presence of oxygen. Anaerobic decomposition of fruits and veggies releases greenhouse gases. A way to avoid this is by allowing the gases to break down naturally and aerobically (with oxygen).

SAVES WATER- When used to aid plant growth, compost helps the soil to retain moisture enabling you to water your plants less regularly.

WHAT CAN I PUT IN MY COMPOST PILE? Fruit and vegetable scraps, for example, banana peels Cardboard and paper.

These provide a great source of carbon.

Remember to tear the cardboard into smaller pieces first as this helps it to break down faster.

Teabags, plant prunings and grass cuttings.

These are fast to break down and provide important moisture.

Now that you're convinced to start a compost pile, it's time for you to find out how to start composting. All you need to get started is a container to hold the compost and the waste material. You can even use an old barrel.

-Place your compost bin at the desired location and put some material into it.

- Keep the components moist (this aids the breakdown process) Turn the components occasionally. You can use a small fork or a stick. (this too speeds up the process) /Now you're all set to start your compost pile. Wait a few months after the last set of fresh material has been added and you can start using the material in your garden when the material has a rich dark brown colour.

Get to know your schoolmates' cultures.

This segment is all about discovering those in Harrison College who have diverse Caribbean backgrounds. How well do you know the people who you go to school with everyday?

While she was born in Canada, Kenya James spent her infancy and early childhood years in St.Vincent. However, this was not her final settling place, at the age of five (5) she moved to St.Kitts and lived there for over 8 years, she then moved to Barbados at the age of 13 and has lived here since then. While Kenya moved a lot, the culture of her many ‘hometowns’ has still had a significant impact on her life.

One such impact is the food lost when she moved away from St.Kitts and St.Vincent. Kenya boasted about the many delicacies of the beautiful islands, she marvelled about how Vincentians often eat blackfish (pilot whale), manicou(opossum) and iguana meat while also informing us that in St.Kitts they actually eat the green vervet monkeys that we see roaming around our island ever so often. For Kenya, the many foods which were native to these islands had a grave impact on how she enjoyed their cultures.

Kenya notes many differences between St, Vincent, St. Kitts and the Barbadian culture, on being, the way that Christmas is celebrated. Most if not all countries have a version of carnival or Crop Over celebration at different times of the year and St.Vincent and St.Kitts are no different. In this case, both countries have this celebration around Christmas. St.Kitts celebrates Jouvert (jew-vay) which is celebrated right after Christmas. It is a celebration where people paint their skin in black oil and wear masks and is typically a day full of dancing and partying. Similarly, St. Vincent's Nine Mornings is celebrated for nine mornings leading up to Christmas, this celebration takes the form of groups of people going around to villages and singing and playing steel-pan.

Kenya also admitted to majorly missing the many sites and breathtaking views that St.Kitts and St. Vincent offer. She advises us to take a trip down to these islands and specifically visit Vincentian waterfalls and the Grenadine island of Bequia and advocates Brimstone hill, a fort in St.Kitts.

Although Kenya has lived in a few places, they still hold a special place in her heart and form many parts of her identity. Kenya did not abandon the traits and cultural impacts that these islands had on her, embodying what it truly means to have Kolij Caribbean culture.

Musicians At HC Donna-Lisa Yearwood is a young lady who has always had music play a significant role in her life. As a current Lower 6th student studying Economics, Communication Studies, History, and Sociology, the 17-year-old always grew up with Music and the Arts in her life. Donna-Lisa exclaimed that although she initially started playing the steel pan when she was around 9 years old as a way to avoid dance practice, music became an escape mechanism.

Donna-Lisa is also a singer and has been singing for as long as she can remember with her parents' careers as professional singers playing an influential role in that love. She has had the pleasure of performing at many events including Harrison College’s Mosaic VII: Rhythms ‘Round the Sandbox Tree in 2020 and at the Caribbean Festival of Arts. She also had the opportunity to be featured on the international TV station Kids Time 3ABN in an episode where they focused on Barbados. Donna-Lisa also explained that she was 1 of 4 kids chosen to be flown to Tennessee in the United States to record in a recording studio; however, due to unforeseen circumstances, the trip was cancelled.

Around 6 months ago, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a young lady emerged with plans of great ambition. This young lady is no other than Divine Innis of Lower Science 1, who is the founder of ‘My Glitzy Haven’.

Divine is currently undertaking Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at CAPE Level, however, she expresses her admiration for her place in the beauty industry. Divine possesses a distinct joy in producing cosmetic supplies, especially lipgloss bundles and all of the “pretty, glitzy stuff”. At ‘My Glitzy Haven’, Divine stresses that all customers are free to express their feedback and all attempts will be made to accommodate each customer and consistently improve products whenever possible. In her own right, Divine has a lot on her plate and is trying her best to balance her business with the rigours of her everyday life, however, she emphasises that she sees her business as a long-term endeavour and wants to keep it running successfully.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Fighting Back : Local organization combats Gender-Based Violence (GBV) From November 25th to December 10th, The United Nations hosted its 30th annual “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign. This human rights-based initiative is used as an organizing strategy for activists and organizations across the world to call for the elimination of violence against women and girls. With over 6,000 organizations in almost 187 countries around the world, including Barbados, this campaign seeks to expand the conversation on this critical issue and push for change. Dance4Life (D4L) is one of our local organizations that has joined the global fight against Gender-Based Violence.

D4L was originally founded in 2009 with the slogan “start dancing, stop aids”. The organization’s original priority was addressing HIV aids and attempting to mitigate its spread by educating students on the disease. However, as time progressed, the founders began to realize the true depth of the intersectionality of HIV, sex education and gender-based violence.

Audrey Lorde, an American writer, feminist, womanist and civil rights activist, once said “there is no real issue that is a single issue because all issues have an interconnected relationship”.

This concept was seen during D4L’s earlier sessions when students began to broach questions which led to discussions surrounding some of the facets of Gender-Based Violence. It was then that the decision was made to implement conversations about Gender-Based Violence into the sex-ed discussions. This was the conception of D4L’s venture to shift HFLE from a basic level, obstinacy focused sex ed classes, to a safe space where young people feel comfortable learning, growing and sharing.

For Kayla Archer, D4L’s Communications Officer, whom our reporter Macaria Thorpe interviewed, connecting with counterparts who are equally driven, remains one of the most enjoyable aspects of her job.

“Through D4L it's not just about acquiring information but rather the feeling you get when you connect with people who are just as passionate and committed to the cause.” Working with D4L has not only provided opportunities for Kayla to work with and learn from her counterparts but it has also provided an environment in which she has been able to learn many life lessons and various skills. One thing she has learned is the importance of balancing short and long term goals, a skill she says is not intuitive.

An early example of this lesson came when Kayla, only a teen herself, participated in a summer camp at the Girls Industrial School. The harsh realization of the stark dichotomy between her life and those of the girls in the Industrial School was difficult for a then 17-year-old Kayla to process. She felt powerless. She was later encouraged by the knowledge that the goal of the summer camp was to allow the residents a moment of respite. She realized that this seemingly minor goal was equally as important as the larger, long term goal of reforming the system in its entirety. It is an understanding that she carries with her to this day.

Below is a photo of the girls in our club (Ella Emtage, Imani Gaskin, Macaria Thorpe and Sanaa Elcock), along with other girls from the world representing Harrison College and girls throughout the Caribbean on a Zoom call with Niñas Valientes. Niñas Valientes is a non-profit organization that aims to achieve gender equality through several initiatives. This Zoom call was also connected to UNICEF and the girls who represented our school and country will be participating in a Review Committee to generate a UNICEF Toolkit that will help to battle the fight against gender equality and genderbased violence.

“That’s how a lot of these campaigns work, focus on the stuff in front of you, don't undervalue them even though it doesn't seem like enough at the time and just keep that long term goal in mind to keep that direction” Dance4Life has a few of these macro-level goals aimed at helping to combat gender-based violence and aid survivors. These include the creation of a ministry whose sole purpose is advocating for the rights of women and girls in Barbados, a step already taken by many other countries. Secondly, the creation of safe houses to shelter survivors of GBV who need to remove themselves from abusive situations.

Underpinning these frameworks is the basic need for the empowerment and support of girls. It is vital for young girls to have circles where they can give and receive love and encouragement and build comradery. These communities help to create confident young women who are better equipped to handle male manipulation and to exist without male validation.

Although the process of combating Gender Inequality and Gender-Based Violence is tedious, organisations such as Dance4Life tirelessly fight to foster change for future generations. The United Nations' ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign has been a successful weapon in the global arsenal to help bring about that change while educating women and girls about the power of their voices.

Well, read on because we have some tricks and tips you should consider: Be well organised and make deadlines your priority.

Get a calendar, whether an online app or a good old paper diary, and write down all your deadlines, exams, group meetings, and school events. You will have dozens of different assignments during your college years and the sooner you find a routine that fits you, the better. Prioritise never handing in an assignment late. Being diligent and dependable is always a plus!

Find a note-taking system that fits you.

Typing notes with a laptop might be faster and easier than by hand but, as a personal preference, writing with an actual pen might help you remember the content of the lecture better. Explore what works best for you in each topic so you can make the most out of your notes once revising or studying.

carrot cake Perfect Study Treat!

It's always nice to have a treat while working hard, treat yourself, your friends and your family to a nice decadent comfort cake. Follow the instructions below for the best results! :)

COOKING TEMP: 350 DEGREES FARENHEIT

COOKING TIME: 25 MIN

INGREDIENTS CAKE:

▢ 2 cups all-purpose flour spooned and levelled

DIRECTIONS CAKE: Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Grease and flour the bottom and sides

▢ 1 1/2 tsp baking powder ▢ 1 ½ tsp baking soda ▢ 2 tsp cinnamon ▢ 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg ▢ 1/2 tsp salt ▢ 1 cup vegetable oil ▢ 1 cup sugar ▢ 3/4 cup packed brown sugar ▢ 2 tsp vanilla ▢ 4 eggs room temp ▢ 3 tbsp sour cream (greek yogurt

In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Set aside.

Then in a separate large bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together the oil and sugars until evenly combined. Then beat in the eggs, vanilla and sour cream until no sugar lumps remain. You may need to turn off the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Then with the mixer on low speed, carefully beat in the flour mixture followed by the grated carrots. Be careful not to over mix.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan spreading it to the edges then bake in the preheated oven for 20-35 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean and if you give the pan a gently nudge the middle doesn't Allow cake to cool fully in the pan before frosting.

FROSTING: In a large bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat together the butter and cream cheese until very well softened and evenly combined.

Then turn the mixer down to low speed and carefully beat in the powdered sugar about 1 cup at a time, followed by the vanilla. Then beat in the whipping cream 1 tablespoon at a time as needed, or add in a little extra powdered sugar until you reach the desired consistency.

Frost the cooled cake, then decorate with chopped walnuts if desired.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects the way we think, feels, and how we act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, make choices and carry ourselves and the way we choose to live. Mental health is not only important for teenagers going through a rough time at school but at every stage of life. Many people are under the impression that mental health issues are not real problems. Make sure to educate yourselves to suit and remember to stay true to the belief that mental health impacts and affects everybody from childhood and adolescence all the way through adulthood. As teenagers, we should never be afraid to reach out if we are struggling; there will always be someone willing to help us whether that be talking, keeping us company or helping us get professional help if that is what you need.

MENTAL SICKNESS CAN BE A SILENT KILLER but don’t let it control you and captivate your life. Take the wheel and become the narrator of your story.

When life puts you in tough situations, don’t say “Why me”, say “Try Me” :) !

Always remember that protecting your mental health during exam season is the most important skill you need in order to achieve success!
