“She is a combination of gentle and strong,” said Professor David DeBonis ’79, an audiologist in the program who is a former student and close friend of Sister Char. “She is a true humanist; her spirituality shapes her life. She also knows how to use her gentleness.”

Charleen Marie Bloom was born in Albany. She came to Saint Rose to study education and soon became inspired by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ.) After deep reflection, she left the College following her sophomore year to enter the CSJ community. After taking her vows, Sister Char completed her undergraduate degree at Saint Rose.

She earned advanced degrees in communication disorders; a Master’s from The Catholic University in 1967, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1970. She returned to Saint Rose to establish the undergraduate communication sciences and disorders program and expand the graduate component, while also helping secure state and national certifications.

She is the author of two books and numerous articles and book chapters. She has presented at conferences worldwide and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Federal subpoenas were issued to force the reporters to name their confidential sources. The pair faced 18 months in jail. Burton and her team fought to have the subpoenas withdrawn. The writers ultimately continued their work and never revealed their sources.

In 2006, Burton won a case that gave Albany’s Times Union the green light to continue its probe into corruption among top state officials. She successfully argued in New York State Supreme Court that the newspaper had a right to the records showing how the officials had spent taxpayer money.

Burton is a member of Hearst’s Venture Committee, which funds digital initiatives, and is a leader of HearstLab, which supports early-stage businesses led by women. She is ever-aware of the need to mentor women in the law. As a panelist during the 2016 William Randolph Hearst Lecture at Saint Rose, for example, she brought along a group of women lawyers who work with her at Hearst.

Burton joined the company in 2002 and was appointed to the Hearst Board of Directors in 2013.

Burton has been recognized by the National Press Club and the New York Press Club. She was named an Outstanding Woman of the Bar by the New York County Lawyers’ Association. Burton served as a Fulbright Research Scholar at Thammasat University in Bangkok.

The Carondelet Medal

The J. Spencer and Patricia Hunter Standish ’50, G’57 Endowed Chair in English

The medal is designed as an award for an individual who, through working in the community, has enabled others to move toward a fuller development of their personhood. Thus is the larger human family nourished. The recipient has given evidence of commitment to a constant striving for excellence, as well as to equal access to education, as seen in the College’s early role in the education of women.

In addition, the recipient is one committed to the Saint Rose tradition of the liberal arts, understood here as education of the whole person, and to those moral and religious values that are consistent with Judeo-Christian tradition. Finally, in conferring this medal, The College of Saint Rose recognizes the individual for exceptional contributions to education, which, in the broadest sense of the word, is the passing on to others that which one has received.

J. Spencer and Patricia Hunter Standish ’50, G’57 contributed funds for the establishment of an Endowed Chair in English, as English (medieval) literature was Patricia’s undergraduate and graduate major at Saint Rose. This chair honors Patricia’s lifelong commitment to the study and teaching of literature and to the continuing values of English studies in the 21st Century. The J. Spencer and Patricia Hunter Standish ’50, G’57 Endowed Chair in English honors the accomplishment of an English faculty member demonstrating exceptional scholarship through a research project designed to enhance the learning experience of students in the English Department. The recipient is recommended by a committee of English faculty with the final selection by the Provost and the President.
