Community comes together to remember our lost miners Each year one of the main events on the Festival of the Miner’s Ghost program is ‘A Night to Remember Our Lost Miners’.

The event is organised by local Barry Knight and this year’s was held on Sunday night at the Services Club (after rain forced the change from the outdoor venue at the Heritage Park).

Barry said the service was an important one for Cobar residents to honour those who have lost their lives working in the mines of the Cobar Shire.

Catholic priest Fr Paul Finucane opened the event with a prayer and Cobar school students sang the national anthem.

Barry welcomed two guest speakers, Greg Braes, who worked for 32 years as an underground miner at Broken Hill, and Sandra Collins (nee Bailey) who was the first woman to work underground in NSW. Mr Braes said having a strong family history connection to Cobar and mining in Cobar, it was an honour to be asked to speak at the service.

“Today is a very significant yet sombre day, as we pay our respect to those who have lost their lives,” Mr Braes said.

“The memorial commemorates those who have died in the Cobar mines, but also those who died from mining related diseases, such as my grandfather, who was a miner, and died of silicosis.”

Mr Braes, who has been the vice president of the Mining and Energy Union South-Western District since 2008, said it was important for governments, mining companies and unions to work together to keep all our mine sites safe.

“As we remember those we have lost, we renew our commitment to be ever vigilant and to keep fighting for continuous improvements in safety,” he said.

Mrs Collins spoke about her experiences working at CSA Mine in 1985 as a 26 year old trainee miner and her long fight to be allowed to work underground.

She succeeded and became the first woman to work underground in a mine in NSW. Mrs Collins outlined the work she undertook and recalled the names of many of the former CSA miners who mentored her (and at times stood up for her) and her career progression in mining which has led to winning a number of

mining awards.

As part of the night, Cobar High School students and teachers performed their own composition, ‘They Were Miners’ and local musician Shane Josephson sang ‘Hard Rock Miner’ which he wrote for the first service in 2017.

Cobar High student Tiana Jones also recited a Miners Poem and the local Mines Rescue and emergency services personnel formed a Guard of Honour for wreaths to be laid in memory of lost miners.

Best dressed at the ball

Cobar Shire Council’s Cr Michael Prince and general manager, Peter Vlatko, had the job of judging the Best Dressed at the Stomp. Jive and Bump dinner dance at the Services Club on Friday night with Cobar’s Emily Miller, dressed in 50s theme, judged as Best Dressed Lady while Sunshine Coast visitor, Keith Howdin, was named as Best Dressed Man. The dance kicked off a busy weekend of Grey Mardi Gras events.

Council makes land purchase

Cobar Shire Council has entered into an agreement with the State Government to purchase the land where the former Cobar Hospital was located.

Council will purchase four parcels of vacant land in Woodiwiss Avenue/Lerida Road where the former Cobar Hospital and Community Health buildings were previously located.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko advised councillors at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting that as directed by Council, Cobar Shire had entered into an agreement with the State Government to purchase the four parcels of land for $370,000 (as per the figure set by the State Government).

Mr Vlatko said the contract has been signed and they were just waiting to make payment.

Cr Julie Payne raised a question at the meeting asking how Council’s finances are situated as Council was to consider making other land/building purchases.

Mr Vlatko said the hospital land purchase had been allowed for in Council’s budget.

The purchase of more land/buildings was also discussed (in confidence) at last week’s meeting.

A report from the general manager was tabled for Council to look at purchasing the Grand Hotel and adjacent café buildings in Marshall Street with the idea of seeking grant funding to develop the site as a main street precinct.

The idea to develop the two vacant buildings was one of the suggestions made at the recent CBD community consult sessions.

High grade copper The latest drilling results from Peel Mining’s Wirlong Project, 30km southwest of Nymagee and 80km southeast of Cobar, have continued to demonstrate the potential of high grade copper.

Drilling at the site commenced in April and included 38 holes for 20,813m.

The company released their drilling results in an ASX announcement last week with Peel CEO Jim Simpson advising their infill and extensional drilling at Wirlong has concluded.

Mr Simpson said the latest drilling results, along with the earlier drilling results from their Malle Bull project, will now allow Peel to progress to an updated resource for their South Cobar Project.

“Results to date confirm the quality of the Wirlong copper deposit and that Wirlong will be a significant component of our South Cobar Project,” he said.

“The significance of the infill drilling should not be understated as it has improved our confidence and understanding of the structural controls and geometry of mineralization.

“The completion of this drilling also allows us to move to exploration decline design and permitting with greater confidence,” Mr Simpson said.

More rain in our local gauges

Another 6.6mm of rain on Sunday and 27.2mm up to midnight on Monday has added to our already record rainfall for the month of October.

The Bureau of Meteorology reports Cobar’s total rainfall for the month of October was 210.8mm.

This rainfall record well and truly beats Cobar’s previous record of 130.5mm recorded in 1934 (which we reported last week).

Local landholders have also fared very well for the month with the Sinclairs receiving a total of 309.8mm at Berangabah in the south of the shire and Phil Harley at Balowra (Nymagee) had 274.2mm for the month.

The Bureau is predicting Cobar could be in for some more rain later this week with possible showers on Sunday and Monday.

Some cooler temperatures are also expected this week with 16 the maximum today, tomorrow should reach 19 and a top of 22 degrees is expected on Friday.

Saturday’s forecast is expected to be a top of 25 and the mercury is predicted to reach 27 on Sunday and 29 on Monday.

Making school zones safer places

Upgrade work is currently underway to make the school zones in our community safer.

Cobar Shire Council has recently received funding from the Federal and State Governments as part of the School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program to upgrade the school zones within our community.

The School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program aim to make the journey safer for pedestrians on their way to and from school, and when walking within school zones.

It’s part of the $540 million NSW Federal Road Safety Program.

Council has received funding from both Round 1 and Round 2 of the program to carry out the upgrades.

Work is being carried out in all three school areas including work upgrading pedestrian access in Barton Street and Maidens Avenue near Cobar Public School.

Repainting of line marking is being carried out in Blakey Street near Cobar Public School, in Woodiwiss Avenue near Cobar High School and in Bourke Street near St John’s Primary School.

Work is also being done in Barton and Marshall Streets to upgrade a well used walking route of students.

Cobar’s St Vinnies community last week joined in national celebrations recognising 100 years of service for Vinnies shops. Starting from humble beginnings in a shop in Newtown in 1922, the St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) now has over 220 shops across the state. Council to install a bore at Euabalong Regional NSW forgotten in the Federal Budget Cr Peter Maxwell has received the support of his fellow Cobar Shire Councillors in calling for the installation of a water bore in Euabalong.

Cr Maxwell brought the matter to the attention of councillors at Thursday’s October Ordinary Council meeting and requested that it be treated as a matter of urgency.

While he praised Council for allocating $1 million towards the upgrade of the Euabalong and Euabalong West Pump Station, he said once the river goes down after flooding the village will still have problems with their water

supply.

“Once the river goes down, the black water comes back into it,” Cr Maxwell explained.

He recommended that Council put a bore down at the end of Hercules Street in Euabalong. Cr Maxwell said it would be close to the powerline and it’s been determined there is a flow of water at about 25 feet.

He suggested this may circumvent the village’s continued problems with their water supply.

Councillors voted in favour of installing a bore at Euabalong.

Wool Track road is still a priority Cobar Shire Council has applied for $6 million worth of State Government grant funding to upgrade a section of The Wool Track (Cobar to Ivanhoe Road).

Cr Bob Sinclair called for an update on what was happening with The Wool Track at last week’s Cobar Shire Council Ordinary Monthly Meeting.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said council had been very keen to work with adjoining council, Central Darling Shire, to apply for joint funding for the complete upgrade, which was estimated to be in the vicinity of $70-$80 million.

Mr Vlatko said the State Government originally indicated they had a pool of approximately $500 million for fixing country roads

but later revised that figure to just $80 million.

He said Council was then advised by the government to only apply for partial funding to improve a section of the road.

“We were working with Central Darling to put in a joint submission for $4 million to put some black bitumen down or repair some serious areas of The Wool Track,” Mr Vlatko said.

He said during all the changes, Central Darling decided to go ahead and put in their own submission and so Cobar Shire was left to also make their own submission.

Mr Vlatko said the $6 million Council has applied for would extend the current sealed section on The Wool Track for another 30 to 40km.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has slammed Labor’s first Budget, saying it’s a major blow for regional communities.

“The biggest loser in this Budget is regional Australia,” Mr Coulton said.

“The slashing of the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) is a devastating loss for communities throughout my electorate.

“This program injected more than $46 million into the Parkes electorate since it was established, funding projects that are making a real and tangible difference in many of our communities,” Mr Coulton said.

“Childcare has been trumpeted as a winner in this Budget, but that is not the case for regional Australia. Childcare affordability is not the main issue for our regional families – accessibility is.

“Funding rebates does nothing to help those families in the Parkes electorate who are unable to return to work because they can’t access childcare in their town. Of the $4.7 billion in childcare measures, there is no money to create one new childcare facility.

“Families will also be worse off as a result of this Budget, which is in complete contrast to Labor’s election promises. In fact, families will be at least $2,000 worse off by Christmas.

Cost of living pressures will only be exacerbated with electricity and gas prices set to rise sharply. Interest rates have already gone up and are predicted to go up a further 75 basis points, which is ripping hundreds of dollars out of households each month.

“Basin communities across the Parkes electorate face the prospect of indiscriminate water buybacks. Despite having no dollars listed, Labor has clearly indicated they are going back to the dark days of water buybacks, in an effort to return 450 gigalitres to South Australia.

“As a former show president, I’m also very disappointed to see the Budget will not proceed with Round 2 of the Agricultural Shows Development Grant program and a partial reversal of the Agricultural Shows and Field Days program.

“These programs were introduced to help our agricultural shows and field days recover from the impacts of COVID-19, and have kept these important local events from folding,” Mr Coulton said.

• One group who went above and beyond to help out over the weekend was Al Ewan and his Cobar Cranes team who, not only helped with setting up the stage and equipment for the Gig on the Grass at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval, but Al and crew also mowed and whipper-snipped the entire grounds to ensure the venue looked immaculate!

from various places including the Sunshine Coast, Mudgee, Cairns and Sydney here for the Grey Mardi Gras Festival. They got into the spirit dressing up in theme and attending all of the events. The group also spoke highly of Colby Lawrence and said his “charismatic personality is undeniable!”

• A Good on Ya this week goes to out Nymagee’s Good Samaritans, Paddy and Catherine Bolam and Steve Nicholson who recently helped bus driver Kate Moloney when the bus “conked out” near Nymagee. Not only did Paddy help tow the bus, he also fixed it and got it back on the road!

• There were some scary (and some very wet) looking kids and their parents out trick or treating on Monday night for Halloween. Now that’s dedicated!

Familiar faces return for Yabbies 50th Anniversary reunion The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club 50th/51st Reunion was held over the weekend with more than 200 people attending.

Swimmers from 10 different clubs, along with current and former Cobar Yabbies and their partners and families, celebrated the club’s milestone of 51 years (as COVID forced the cancellation of the 50th Reunion last year).

The weekend of events commenced with a Meet & Greet at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Friday night which was followed by town tours and a swimming carnival on Saturday.

The weekend culminated in a huge Reunion Dinner on Saturday night, also at the Golfie, and a Recovery Brunch on Sunday morning.

Bob Clark, one of the club’s founding members (and organiser of the reunion weekend), was given the honour of leading the Yabbies team on a march into the venue at the dinner.

The team were decked out in Gladiator costumes and the Yabbies club uniform (shirts and budgie smugglers).

The Cobar Yabbies current club president, John Carswell, welcomed everyone, including past pool managers, Michael Francisco and Brad Wynd.

He also read out a message of congratulations from the club’s founding secretary, Reg Chandler (who was not able to attend).

He briefly outlined the club’s history, praised all who had taken on executive roles throughout the club’s history, including Harley Toomey, who has served as the club’s treasurer since 1978.

“Yabbies is all about mateship, having a laugh and looking after each other,” Carswell said.

In addition to a delicious two course meal, the evening included a Yabbies Race and Calcutta and an auction of memorabilia.

Approximately $2,000 was raised from the auction and a raffle which is to be donated to local charities.

Former Cobar residents Karen and Trevor Menadue (from Melbourne) and Bruce Kennedy (from Tuross Head on the south coast) dodged flood waters to get to Cobar for the Cobar Yabbies 50th Anniversary Reunion on the weekend.

Golfers were sort of back on course The Cobar Lady Golfers were able to get out on the course over the weekend although no cards could be entered for the last official days of the 2022 season as there were only six holes open due to the water still laying around on the back section of the course.

Susan Goonrey slogged it out in the damp conditions for Saturday’s Stableford game to finish with 28 points for the win.

Barb Barklimore and Julie Livingston both scored 25 points and were awarded second and third places respectively after a countback.

Barklimore, Livingston and Michelle Deppeler were all pin winners on the 8th hole.

Players numbers were up by four from the previous day with 11 starters for Sunday’s game.

The scores reflected the extra day of no rain

with Julie Livingston improving her score from Saturday by nine points.

She finished with a total of 34 points on Sunday to take home the win.

Fay Hardwick was runner-up on 31 points followed by Susan Goonrey on 30 and Barb Barklimore on 27.

The closest to the flag on the 8th hole were Sally Bannister, Susan Goonrey and Karen Walsh (who was back in town for the weekend).

If the weather holds out, this week’s games comprise of a Stableford today, a Par 3 Stroke on Saturday and a Stableford variation (select own partner) on Sunday.

These games could be subject to change depending on how much of the course will be open after rain this week.—T’d Off

Warmer weather brings out Yabbies

The Presidents Race

Presidents (or the president’s representative) from 10 swimming clubs, along with the president of the Western Districts Swimming (Cobar’s Bill Fugar, second from left) lined up to contest the President’s Race at the Cobar Yabbies 50th Anniversary Swimming Carnival at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday. The Open Carnival race winner was Ian Goodman from Grafton, with Rodger Bruce from Gosford winning the Four Way Carnival title. Cobar’s club president, John Carswell (4th from left) finished third in the Four Way Carnival. The Four Way carnival is an annual event conducted by the Cobar, Forbes, Gosford and Nelson Bay clubs. Warmer weather has brought out the Yabbies in bigger numbers with 17 swimmers lining up on the blocks for last Tuesday night’s competition swim.

Bill Fugar had the best time of the night when he swam spot on his nominated time to win the 50 metres freestyle handicapped event.

Paul Swainston had the next best recorded time of 0.06 seconds off his time which earned him a win in the 30m swim.

Lucas Hardy claimed a win in the 100m swim after finishing within 0.16 seconds of his nominated time.

The minor placings in the 30 metres swim were filled by Stephen Clark in second with 0.13 and Greg Clark was third on 0.18.

Jason Toomey finished second to Fugar in the 50m event with 0.63 seconds off his time and third was a tie between Murray Harland and Lucas Hardy, both with 0.75 seconds off their times.

In the 100m swim Jason Toomey, with 0.65 seconds off his time, ran second to Hardy with Chris Powell finishing back in third place with 1.11 seconds off his nominated time.

The swim on Tuesday night was a good warm up for the Yabbies 50th Anniversary Carnival on Saturday with the Cobar swimmers dominating the podium in most events.

Record breaking numbers for bowls Another drawn game in senior touch competition Two tries by Amie Hill, one of them scored in the closing stages of the game, helped her Phat Athletes team to a 4-all draw with the Red Hot Chilli Steppers in their Round 3 game in the Adults Senior Mixed Touch Competition last Thursday.

Phat Athletes fought back from a 4-0 half time deficit after Olivia Deighton and Kayla Hasson-Williams scored a first half try each for the Red Hot Chilli Steppers.

Hill’s two tries in the second half tied up the match and helped to earn her the game’s Best & Fairest three points.

Team mates Matt McBride (2 points) and Kai Greenwood (1) also shared in B&F points.

Urban Strength scored their first win in the competition last week after downing Haymans Snowflakes 13-6.

Elias Aumua was hard to catch running in six tries to help Urban Strength to their win.

Aumua earned B&F three points with two points going to Graeme Barton (Haymans Snowflakes) and Trent Fulllagar (Haymans Snowflakes).

The DC & C Barracudas kept their unbeaten record intact with a 10-2 win over DJW Dingoes in their Round 3 game on Thursday.

Aisha Schofield led the scoring for her DC & C Barracudas team with three tries which also helped to earn her B&F points.

Nathan McAndrew, Marty Turton and Brianna Watson also touched down for tries for DC & C Barracudas with Tyler Coughlan and Lochlan Ford scoring a try each for the DJW Dingoes.

DJW Dingoes’ Luke Newton and DC & C Barracudas’ Brianna Watson shared in the game’s B& F points with Schofield.

The other match of the night was a onesided affair with The Butchers butchering the Rusty Snails to win 17-0.

The Rusty Snails couldn’t contain the fast running young Butchers side, and in particular were unable to contain Sarah Morley who finished the game with a six try tally (which contributed 12 points to her team total as female tries are worth double points).

The Butchers’ other try scorers included Tommy Bryan (2), Zac Broughton and Genie McMullen. Broughton (3 points), Morley (2) and Rusty Snails’ Ben McBride (1) shared in the match’s B&F points.

A record breaking field of 32 bowls enthusiasts from near and far thoroughly enjoyed playing social bowls on the very fast and well tended greens at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Sunday.

The well deserved outright winners with +21 on the day were masterfully skippered by Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey.

His team included Alan Kennedy (from Maroubra) and locals Tony Polack and Peta Zazoniuk.

Their rivals were Gerard Livingston, Kelly Beard, Greg Clark and Jim Nixon (Malabar).

Sydney trio Mick Cawley (Skipper), Peter Rowley and Barbara Cawley joined forces with Cobar’s legendary Doug Hudson to take out runners-up bragging rights after they had a +14 win over Gold Coast’s Skip Audrey Mexted who led the side of Randal Hall, Keran Durston (Maroubra) and Allan Gardoll.

In another fours social game, Bian Smith, John Goonrey, Scott Toomey and Karen Daly won by +8 over Les Houghton, Scott Mayne, first time bowler Gary Williamson (Malabar) and Janet Murphy (Narooma).

Gold Coast’s master Skipper Steve Mexted guided his team mates John Veneris (Maroubra), Ian Goodman (Malaney QLD) and Paul Burgess (Mingara) to a nail biting +1 victory over John ‘Shark’ Daly and Narooma cohort’s Peter Murton, John Rowley and Bob Murphy who decreed that their game was

brilliant right to the bitter end!

The coveted George The Giraffe Award recipient was Les Houghton whose thrice wrong biases surpassed Shark’s one wrong bias and Zazoniuk’s three rink wrong bias, although it was impressive!

Meanwhile, on rink 2, the first Triples Championship game for the season was played with the side of Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, David ‘Ooze’ Knight, and Michael Sargent finishing with a +23 win over the team of David Schofield, Marlene Wynd and Shine McIver.

Team Sargent’s win sees them go through to the next round.

Later in the afternoon in the Pairs Championship competition, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and John ‘Shark’ Daly fought a tough duel with Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Barry Bargwanna.

Ooze and Shark led the way right up until the 15th end but from then on it was all about Duck and Baz who eventually finished with a +6 win, which will see them go through to the final.

Thursday’s social bowls winners were Marlene Wynd, Barbara Barklimore, Karen Daly and Peta Zazoniuk.

The Cougars Opens and 18s teams both finished as winners over their Dubbo Goannas opposition to firm up their third places on both the Opens and 18s competition ladders.

The Cougars Opens, which included Cobar Roosterettes’ Kayla Hasson-Williams, comprehensively beat the Goannas 46-18 while the 18s (with Cobar’s Sarah Morley in the side) won their Round 5 game 38-22.

Sarah also lined up with her 16s team and they went down 38-0.

The Cougars 14s lost 52-0 while the 12s were narrowly beaten 22-20 in their game.

Women’s NSW State Sand Green Golf Championships with over 100 players representing 21 towns.

Yabbies fastest in the pool

The Cobar Yabbies swimmers dominated in the pool for the Cobar club’s 50th Anniversary Carnival including in the 50 metres sprint race with Cobar Yabbies swimmers finishing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Two narrow wins

SpongeBobs and Flamingoes both scored narrow one point wins in their 13-16 years Junior Touch Round 3 games on Thursday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

After leading 3-2 at the half time break, Spongebobs continued to hold the upper hand to finish with a 5-4 win over Green Guns.

Jaxon Burke put three tries on the board for SpongeBobs in the first half and then backed that up with two more in the second half to see his team through to the win.

Green Guns was well served by Damon Bruce who scored two tries in the first half and two more in the second half to keep them in the hunt.

Best & Fairest points were earned by: Green Guns’ Toby Greenwood and Kai McCosker along with SpongeBob’s Sophie Clark.

The Flamingoes had a close 6-5 win over the Untouchables in their Round 3 match last week.

Untouchables had a narrow 2-1 lead at the half time break after Eli Martin and Zach Snudden broke through to score a try each while Oisin McMullen responded with a try for the Flamingoes.

McMullen went on to score two more tries in the second half along with team mates Rhylee Patterson and Lachlan Brookman.

Sarah Morley and Jack Rogers scored second half tries for the Untouchables but it wasn’t enough with the Flamingoes finishing with the one point victory.

McMullen’s hat trick of tries helped him to earn the game’s B&F points with Axel Fairfull (Untouchables) and Patterson also earning B&F points.

The Red Rangas had a big first half in their game last week with the Orange Socks and, by half time they led 4-0 after Ella Oborn had scored twice.

The Orange Socks fought back in the second half. They kept the Red Rangas scoreless while Talas Burke ran in two tries for them, however it wasn’t enough and Red Rangas held on to claim the 4-2 win.

Sharing in the game’s B&F points were Hugh Le Lievre (Red Rangas), Rubi Reid (Orange Socks) and Addison Cull (Orange Socks).

The other Juniors game was a try scoring fest with Zara Patterson scoring three tries, George McDonald (2) as well as one each to Harpa Martin and Alfie Toomey to help their Bananas to a big 11-2 win over The Blues.

Late consolation tries for The Blues were recorded by Logan Fennamore and Hugo Josephson.

B&F points were earned by Patterson (3), Bria-Jane Brookman (2 points for The Blues) and McDonald (1).

Netballers conduct some experiments Over the past six rounds of the Fast5 mixed netball competition, each team has been experimenting to see which is the optimal quarter to use their Power Play option.

Teams decide at the start of each game which quarter they wish to nominate to use their Power Play option and all points scored during that quarter are doubled.

In last week’s games, Why Did We Say Yes? (WDWSY?) opted to use their Power Play in the first quarter in their game against CynSteel.

It proved to be a handy tactic which gave them a big 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and put them in the driver’s seat for the rest of the game. By half time they led 23-10 and, despite the two sides shooting goal for goal in the second half, WDWSY? already had plenty of points on the board and they finished the match with a comfortable 32-19 win.

KML dominated their game last week to beat 2 Fast 2 Furious, 30-15.

KML had elected to use their Power Play in the second quarter, but ironically it was the opening quarter of the game where they scored their most goals (10 points compared to eight points in the second quarter).

It seemed that KML spent most of the second quarter defending, which was a good tactic as they kept the 2 Fast 2 Furious shooters very quiet as they only added one point to their tally in that quarter. By half time KML led 18-6 and, despite a late comeback by 2 Fast 2 Furious in the final quarter, KML finished with a comprehensive 15 point win.

All Class continued their winning streak in the competition and easily accounted for Watch & Learn, 35-15, in their Round 6 game last week.

A big effort in the second quarter (where All Class had elected to use their Power Play option) netted them 14 points and helped them to finish as easy 20 point winners.

Round 6’s Favourite Fiver players (as determined by their opposition) were: WDWSY?— Peta Hill; CynSteel—Luke Mellross; KML— Jayden Harvey; 2 Fast 2 Furious—Hannah Carroll; All Class—Nicola Harbison; and Watch & Learn—Bianka Jacobson.

Old Roosters reunited

Players from Cobar Rugby League’s 1971 and 1972 First Grade sides and Clayton Cup winners reunited in Cobar over the weekend. Big celebrations for the Cobar Yabbies Over 150 swimmers registered to contest the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club 50th Anniversary Carnival at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Saturday.

The 50th Anniversary Carnival was also combined with the Four Ways Swim, which is contested each year between the Cobar, Forbes, Nelson Bay and Gosford men’s swimming clubs.

All events, apart from the 50 metres Open Sprint, were handicapped events, with the winners being the swimmers who finish closest to

Bondi swimmers finished first and second in the Open 30m with Pat Drury spot on his nominated time and Dan Brown was second on 0.04. Bert Deegenaars (Twin Towns) was third with 0.18.

In the 50 metres nominated time swims, the Cobar Yabbies once again dominated the placing for the Four Ways swim with Owen Small first (0.00), Chris Powell was second (0.04) and Scott Toomey was third (0.15).

The Open 50 metres winners were: 1st—Paul Widders (Cronulla) with 0.19; 2nd—Wilson Burns (Grafton) 0.21; and Gavin Batcheler (Bondi) 0.22.

The Yabbies continued the charge in the 100m event with Rob Dickerson winning the Fours Ways title with 0.50 off his time, Peter Christen was second (0.60) and Greg Dimond was third (0.84).

The 100m Open Carnival winners were: 1st—Campbell McKeller (Bondi) with 0.19; 2nd—Peter Green (Cronulla) on 0.25; and 3rd—Paul Drury (Bondi) on 0.41.

The Cobar Yabbies also cleaned up in the Four Ways 50 metres Open Sprint with Peter Christen touching the wall in first place with a quick time of 26.91 seconds with Owen Small second (28.53) and Andy Thomas was third (32.44).

The final event of the day was the 10x50m nominated time relay. Cobar won the Four Ways title after finishing within 0.64 seconds of their nominated time. Forbes was second on 2.44 with Nelson Bay third on 16.56.

The winners of the 50m nominated time event at the Cobar Yabbies 50th Anniversary Cronulla finished first in the Opens relay Swimming Carnival on Saturday were all Yabbies with Scott Toomey, Owen Small and with 1.63 seconds off their time; Bondi was second (6.43), and Grafton was third (7.37).
