Celebrating 100 years!

Edna Neale has been waiting a long time for “her letter from the Queen” and it arrived earlier this week (along with numerous cards and congratulatory letters) in time for Enda’s 100th birthday today. Born in Glebe in 1922, Enda came to Cobar in 1948 with her husband Bill who took on the role of Roosters captain/coach.

Cobar was where Edna raised her two children and then welcomed seven grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and nine great, great grandchildren into her family. Edna has always loved cooking, gardening and partying! The Lilliane Brady Village has been Edna’s home for the past three years and, after she missed out on a big birthday bash last year due to the COVID lockdown, Edna’s family and friends are making sure today’s celebrations will more than make up for that. Happy 100th birthday Edna!

Iron Ringer committee progressing with monument plans The Iron Ringer committee met last week and has progressed further with their plans to build an Iron Ringer monument in Cobar.

According to Cobar history, the term Iron Ringer was a privileged title that could only be bestowed on people who were born in Cobar.

The committee aims to build a monument adjacent to the Miners Memorial Park as a celebration of the Iron Ringer identity.

Committee chair, John Collins, advised last week’s meeting, that he had met with Michael Prince from local engineering company, KML Industries, and discussed their proposed ideas

for the monument, which local artist, Peter Rogers, has drawn up in a concept plan.

KML is no stranger to building Cobar icons, having constructed Cobar’s Big Beer Can in 1990 as a tourism initiative of the Grand Hotel licensees at the time, Chris Condon and Peter Payne.

KML has also been involved in constructing the entrance signs to Cobar, built the unique bin covers in the CBD, converted the loader buckets for use in the skate park, manufactured the CBD bus shelter, and built the shade shelters in Drummond Park and Dalton Park.

While the build site has yet to be confirmed as being a suitable location, the committee is progressing with other plans, including ideas for fundraising to cover the cost of the build.

The committee will meet again next month.

LBV comes out of lockdown

The Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) is now officially out of lockdown with the last resident being declared COVID-free on Friday.

A total of 30 of the 34 LBV residents contracted the virus, along with 13 staff members, which necessitated the aged care facility being locked down for the past month to prevent any further infections.

Festival to showcase Cobar connections music talent While Cobar’s Running On Empty Festival (ROEF2022) next month will be “all about the cars” it will also have a focus on music.

All of the live music at this year’s festival has a local connection.

ROEF’s headline band, Edgecliff, who wowed Cobar audiences on New Year’s Eve at the Golfie, are coming back.

The young Sydney band, headed up by Will Howell (who inherited his music talent from his dad Jason Howell of Typhoon fame and great grandfather Keith Mitchell from The Tymekeepers) has been commissioned by the ROEF committee to write and record an original tune for the festival.

Their track to mark the 40th anniversary of the movie, ‘Running On Empty’ was recorded earlier this year at the Forbes Studios, Sydney.

It was then engineered and produced by Calum Howell and mastered by Mike Tucci in New York.

Edgecliff’s new track will be premiered at ROEF2022’s Cocktail Party at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club with the VIP guests in attendance the first to hear it.

Well-known Cobar muso, Shane Josephson, the Cobar ‘God Father of Rock’ will be in charge of sound, stage and light production for most of the ROEF2022 gigs.

He will however hand over the reins to someone else when he joins his old Burnt Earth band (which includes Jim Sloan - lead guitar/ vocals, Paddy Bourke - bass/vocals and John Wayne Josephson—drums/vocals).

Shane has also invited his nephew, Taine Josephson, to bring his Brisbane-based four piece alternative rock band, TAINE JOSO, to Cobar to play as part of the festival.

TAINE JOSO has been described as a fusion of Soundgarden and Tool, playing alternative rock mixed with more progressive and technical elements.

According to the band’s bio, “TAINE JOSO brings metaphoric lyrics inspired by classic literature to their expansive vocals and precise musicianship.

“The band writes music that resonates with people and hits on some element of universal truth, bringing raw emotion and expression to every performance and song, to create a truly unmissable show.”

They list musicians Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin and Devin Townsend, to name a few, among their music icons.

“Ultimately, TAINE JOSO want every one of their tracks to stand out from the other and to have a story and landscape of its own.”

To date, TAINE JOSO has released four studio singles and is set to release their debut album later this year.

A fresh, newly put together group, Charged Up, comprising locals Sam McBride (vocals/ guitar), Jake Muldoon (lead guitar), Stuart Taylor (bass) and Aaron Francisco (drums) will make their first live appearance as part of ROEF2022’s Friday night line up of entertainment at ‘Bands Night’.

And if that’s not enough, the band that stole the show at the Gig on the Grass concert at Cobar’s first Grey Mardi Gras festival in 2019, Ballz n All Trio, have again been booked and will play at ROEF2022’s opening event, A Night at the Museum.

If locals and visitors are looking for a “home grown” vibe, they will certainly experience it in the great line up of music for this year’s festival.

Start of spring

Tomorrow is the first day of spring and, after a cool start (of five degrees), it’s looking like it could turn out to be a nice day.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Cobar is expecting a top of 20 degrees tomorrow while Friday should reach 18 with a slight chance of a shower.

The forecast for both Saturday and Sunday is tops of 19 degrees.

Temperatures over the past week have varied with Cobar’s lowest minimum temperature of the week recorded on Wednesday when the mercury dropped to 0.4 degrees.

Our warmest day was Sunday with the Bureau recording a top of 23.9 degrees.

Public Notice Revised opening date – Ward Oval Cobar Shire Council is currently working on the oval upgrades at Ward Oval. These upgrades include installing new irrigation systems, new footpaths around the ovals and new oval fencing on the re-aligned ovals.

Students give voice to their ideas

St John’s School held the finals of their Public Speaking competition at the school last Wednesday. Pictured above are Year 2’s finalists Sophia Le Lievre, Michael Rogers and Xavier Foster, whose topic was ‘Country life is better than city life’. Students in other classes were tasked with discussing the benefits/disadvantages of three day weekends, the pros and cons of shorter school days, gave their views on nets in the oceans and Kinders were required to recite a nursery rhyme. The competition’s judges were impressed with the students’ highly developed speaking skills.

Mayor fails to gain full support

Mayor Peter Abbott last week called for support from his fellow councillors in petitioning all levels of government to support a Commonwealth Postal Savings Bank Bill to pass through Parliament.

Mayor Abbott put forward the recommendation as a Mayoral Minute to the August Ordinary Council Meeting last Thursday and called for the motion to also be forwarded to the next Local Government NSW conference for consideration and support.

He cited the need for a “post office people’s bank” to be established in the wake of continuing closures of bank branches and ATMs which are leaving many communities, particularly in rural areas, without access to financial services.

While Cr Julie Payne complimented Mayor Abbott for putting up the recommendation and “for having a crack” at fixing the problem, Cr Payne said she could not however support the recommendation.

From her first hand knowledge as a bank employee, Cr Payne advised the meeting that the training needed to work in a bank is “quite extensive”.

She said apart from banking at local bank branches, customers do have other options in how they can choose to bank, including online banking.

She said banking facilities are also offered

“You are far better lobbying the banks to keep their branches open rather than going for a Commonwealth Postal Savings Bank,” Cr Payne said.

“We had a Commonwealth Bank once and what did we do? Privatize it!

“I just think we should lobby the banks to keep their branches open in the country areas.”

Cr Payne said pushing for an alternative bank “could be the last nail in the coffin” for some local branches where banks may be considering closing their rural branches.

The vote on Mayor Abbott’s recommendation was divided with six councillors in favour of putting forward the recommendation while four voted against it.

The recommendation was carried.

Cr Payne was one of the four who voted against the motion and requested that it be noted that she did not support Mayor Abbott’s recommendation.

A Dry July

Re-launch of Operation Stock Check The Rural Crime Prevention team have relaunched Operation Stock Check, an ongoing and proactive operation to prevent livestock theft by disrupting the movement of stolen stock throughout NSW. Operation Stock Check was initially launched in August 2020, and allows officers of all ranks to inspect vehicles carrying livestock to identify and target loads which may have been stolen.

Livestock theft has a significant impact on farmers across the state, with over $8.5 million worth of cattle and sheep reported stolen in the past two years alone.

Officers have re-commenced livestock carrier inspections and are also conducting rural patrols targeting known transportation routes.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the NSW Government’s biggest increase in police numbers in more than 30 years had delivered an additional 10 Rural Crime Investigators to help the Force stay ahead of the game and disrupt criminal activity before it occurs.

“We have more than doubled our Rural Crime Prevention Team over the past five years and now have 63 specialist investigators stationed across all corners of the state.

“While rural crimes like stock theft may not dominate the headlines, they are a huge kick in the guts to our hardworking farmers and their families with the potential to cripple entire livelihoods,” Mr Toole said.

“That’s why we’re ensuring police have the right resources to proactively run these operations and protect regional communities.”

Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree APM said the NSW Police Force takes livestock theft extremely seriously due to the devastating impact it can have on farmers.

“This operation is one of a number of steps the NSW Police Force is taking to protect the livelihoods of our farmers, who have enough to deal with without having to worry about criminals stealing their stock.

“Officers will also be interacting with farmers and engaging with members of their rural communities to ensure they are protecting their stock in every way they can, because prevention is key,” Ast Commissioner Greentree said.

State Rural Crime Coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside, said Operation Stock Check is urging livestock carriers and farmers to always check their paperwork to ensure it is complete and accurate, ensuring their livestock is traceable.

“Operation Stock Check isn’t about targeting truck drivers, it’s about ensuring carriers and farmers are making the appropriate checks; including that the animals are fit to load so that when you are pulled over by police it is a simple check and you can go on your way,” Det Chief Insp Whiteside said.

“Livestock carriers can expect to see an increase in vehicle checks in an effort to disrupt the illegal transportation of stock, whether it be large trucks, small trucks, utilities, trailers or horse floats.”

Since its inception in 2017, the Rural Crime Prevention Team has grown to 63 specialised officers, located at 26 regional NSW locations.

The Cobar Shire received some scattered showers with a total of 4.8mm recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology in town over the past week.

The Bureau’s records show we received 1.6mm last Wednesday while showers overnight on Monday (and up until 9am yesterday morning) registered a total of 3.2mm.

Some landholders in the east of the shire fared better with Anita Burcher reporting 25mm in their rain gauge at Four Corners Farm Stay and Donna Cutting reports they also had 25mm at Lowan.

Dave Harrison at Nullawarra, south west of Cobar, reports they received 6mm in their rain gauge.

Golfie beat the Bourke visitors The Golfie hosted a round of Pennants Bowls on Sunday with games played between Cobar and Bourke.

Expert skipper, Tony Brown, guided his Cobar team of Bian Smith, John ‘Shark’ Daly and David Schofield to a well deserved victory over Bourke with a resounding +9 win.

Another win was also recorded by the Cobar side of Barry Bargwanna, David ‘Ooze’ Knight, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod who defeated their Bourke opposition by +5.

Kyle Roberts, Don Roberts, Doug Hudson and Peter ‘China’ Brien’s game against the Bourke visitors ended with a 16-all draw.

Cobar won overall 65 to Bourke 51. Cobar will next play Warren in Warren this Sunday.

In Sunday’s social bowls at the club, the winners of the day were Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe and Helen Boddy who beat their opponents, Karen Daly and Allan Gardoll with a magnificent score of +21!

Shine McIver and Randal Hall, finished as runners-up after winning by +16 in their game with David Thomas and Scott Hilton.

Not the farewell they wanted

The Cobar Roosterettes were beaten 40-4 by the Coonamble visitors in their Castlereagh League Tag game at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday.

It wasn’t the fitting finish to the season the Roosterettes would have been planning to farewell their co-coach Tyler Watson (nee Chiswick), who played her last match with the side on Saturday before she soon leaves town.

Georgia Boland was their lone try scorer and also shared in Best & Fairest points along with Bianka Jacobson and Jezebel Hitchins.

Hitchins was voted Players’ Player.

Wilkins were consecutive winners Golfers enjoyed perfect match conditions over the weekend with a good roll up of 13 teams contesting the Mixed Foursomes Championships on Saturday.

The winners (for the second consecutive year) were Garry and Jannine Wilkin with a scratch score of 115 over the 27 holes.

The runners-up on 121 were Alec Fraser and Julie Livingston.

The Wilkins were also the Net winners on the day with 94 ½ net.

In second place were Peter Lawrence and Robynne Morton-Lawrence with 101¾ net followed by Alec Fraser and Julie Livingston (104½ net) and Mark Fraser and Pat Polack on 105¼ net.

The men’s competition Nearest the Pin prize on the 8th hole was won by Stewart Fraser and Narelle Kriz was closest to the flag on the 3rd hole for the ladies.

The P&R Lawrence Four-Ball-Best-Ball charity day attracted 16 lady golfers on a beautiful warm and sunny day.

Narelle Kriz and Jannine Wilkin teamed up to win the day with 43 points. Robynne Morton -Lawrence and Tina Gordon placed second with 42 points while Barb Barklimore and Pat Polack were third on 41.

The Nearest the Pin winners were Jannine Wilkin (3rd hole), Sally Bannister (7th), Daphne Cross (8th and 11th) while Marlene Wynd picked up the pin prize on the 15th hole.

The Men’s Golf P&R Lawrence sponsored Four-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford day on Sunday attracted 22 players.

Garry Wilkin and Jason Hampel combined well to finish as the winners coming in with 43 stableford points.

They were one shot clear of Chris Powell and Scott Mackenzie on 42 stableford points.

A countback was then required to separate third and 4th place getters, with Jose Palma and Peter Robinson pipping Alec Fraser and Paul Kershaw after both teams came in with 41 stableford points.

In the individual competition, Hampel defeated his playing partner Wilkin on a countback.

Both finished with 37 stableford points.

The only Nearest to the Pin prize to be won was by Max Phillips on the 8th hole.

Today’s game is a Par round and the previously postponed July Trophy Day Stableford is to be played on Sunday.

There are quite a few changes to the program in the coming months, including the Men’s Open, the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Day and the Captain versus President Day. Players are advised to check the golfers’ board at the club for revised dates.

This Saturday the men will also play host to the Western District Pennants teams.

Only one darts game was played

Empire Barflies got the better of the Golfie Spearchuckers, 6-5, in the only game played in the local darts competition last Wednesday night.

There were no other games played with the Empire Pirates forfeiting their scheduled game to Golfie Dartaholics while the Golfie Gophers and RSL teams had byes.

Hundreds and high scores were recorded for the Empire Barflies by Rodney Coleman 125, Lesley Hooker 101 and Craig Youd 116, 100 and the high scorers for the Golfie Spearchuckers were Robbie Cummins with 119, Dick Tulloh 125 and Zeb Tulloh 100.

The ladies highest peg out for the week was 99 by Lesley Hooker who also recorded the ladies highest dart score of the week (101).

Robbie Cummins (40) had the men’s highest peg out while the men’s highest score was 125 recorded by both Rodney Coleman and Dick Tulloh.

Roosters Under High scoring results in Mini’s games 12s’ grand final dreams dashed After finishing the 2022 Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League regular season as undefeated minor premiers, the Cobar Roosters Under 12s’ hopes of a grand final berth have been dashed.

A tough 12-0 loss to St John’s Blue in the final on Saturday in Dubbo cost the Cobar side a grand final spot and brought their glorious season to an early end.

The Under 12s coach, Graeme Barton, spoke to The Cobar Weekly on Monday and said despite the loss, he is still very proud of the team’s efforts in Saturday’s game and throughout the whole season.

“They’re an awesome bunch of kids, they play for each other,” Coach Barton said.

“They played the way I wanted them to play on Saturday.

“They attacked well and they defended very well.

“It was 6-0 with seven minutes to go, so it was still anyone’s game,” he said.

“St John’s Blue just capitalized on a couple of errors and that was ultimately the final difference.”

He said the St John’s Blue opposition and their coach had done their homework going into Saturday’s game.

“They were on top of our key players all the time.

“They shut them down and didn’t give them any room to move.

“They also had a lot of Dubbo support which also worked a bit in their favour.”

Coach Barton said understandably his young Roosters were upset after Saturday’s loss.

They were to have had a team de-brief session yesterday where Coach Barton said he would be encouraging players to look ahead to next year.

“For now the focus will be to get behind the Senior Roosters,” he said.

A couple of high scoring games were played in the Cobar Junior Soccer Club Mini’s division games on Saturday.

A total of 10 goals were netted in the Liverpool versus Chelsea game with Liverpool finishing as 8-2 winners.

Ashton Hyland and Jack Presig scored four goals each for Liverpool while Leo Neale netted both of Chelsea’s two goals.

United won their match with Wanderers 7-0 with Logan McKenzie dominating to score six goals for United while Sam McKervey booted the extra point into the back of the net.

The match between Rangers and Rovers was a low scoring, tight tussle with Rangers eventually claiming a 1-0 victory.

Tom Geppert was the lone goal scorer in the game.

The Mini’s Gumnut Milkshake Awards for the week went to Logan McKenzie, Lenny Hill, Ollie Tranter, Dayna Armstrong, Joe Arnold and Grace Cavalot.

Divas and Magpies firm as favourites Divas (A Grade) and Nymagee Magpies (B Grade) are headed to next week’s Cobar Netball Senior Ladies competition grand finals after their wins last week.

Divas well and truly accounted for Pumpettes, 52-32, in their A Grade quarter final game last Tuesday night, making Divas hot favourites ahead of next week’s “big dance”.

Pumpettes matched Divas for the first quarter with the scores locked at 12-all at the break.

Divas then outpointed Pumpettes 2:1 in the second quarter, netting 14 points while Pumpettes only managed to sink seven goals.

Divas repeated their domination in the third quarter and then found some extra “oomph” in the final quarter to stretch the final margin out to a 20 point win.

Liverpool played a very strong offensive game in their match with Rovers. Liverpool finished with a big 11-2 win.

Rovers couldn’t break Liverpool’s streak of goals despite some strong defence by Mark Hibbert.

Tom Preisig and Cooper Trudgett were in fine form as both scored four goals each for their Liverpool team, with Jake McKervey and Cooper Raffaele adding the extras to their big tally.

Mark McBride and Joseph Theakston scored a goal each for the Rovers.

The Mids awards went to Max Ellison, Charlie Nicholson, Joshua McMillian, Zara Patterson, Xavier Foster, Indigo Mundy, Tom Preisig and Cooper Trudgett.

The Seniors competition continues to be evenly matched, despite Spurs missing a couple of their strikers in Saturday’s game.

Rangers took advantage of their absence to finish with a 4-3 win. Jacob Theakston and Norman Faisal both scored doubles for Rangers while Isaac Theakston (2) and Fraser Talu (1) netted Spurs’ goals.

The Magpies led the B Grade quarter final game from the get-go and they never gave their Gumnuts opposition any opportunities to makes in-roads on the scoreboard.

After leading 29-13 at half time, Magpies barely took their foot off the accelerator throughout the second half and they finished with a big 28 point win.

In last night’s preliminary finals, Pumpettes had another shot at a grand final spot when they took on JKM in A Grade while Gumnuts played Real Steel for the spot in B Grade.

The winners of those matches will contest next Tuesday night’s all important grand final games.

Roosters play a must win semi

St John’s Yr 3/4 side claims the cup St John’s School Year 3/4 netball team claimed the Ridley-Trudgett Cup in their division at the Ridley-Trudgett Gala Day in Warren last Friday.

The team finished the day undefeated to claim a win in the Year 3/4 division.

St John’s School and Cobar Public School 5/6 teams also competed at the gala day finishing with mixed results.

The two 5/6 Cobar sides met each other in

the first round with the match finishing in a 6-all draw.

CPS then lost their next three games to Warren Central, Warren St Mary’s and Walgett (who went on to finish as the 5/6 winners) but finished the day on a high with a win over Nyngan St Josephs.

St John’s 5/6 team recorded a win over Warren, another draw with Nyngan and went down to Warren St Mary’s and also Walgett.

The Cobar Roosters will host the Gulgong Terriers in the Christie & Hood First Grade minor semi final this Sunday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval (TKMO).

The Roosters finished the 2022 season in third spot with 47 points, close to the top of a very congested points table with Narromine finishing as minor premiers with 48 points and Gilgandra was second, also with 48.

Gulgong, with 43 points, claimed the final semi final spot ahead of Dunedoo, who finished the season in 5th place on 41 points.

Minor premiers, Narromine host Gilgandra on Saturday in the major semi final with the winner to go straight into the grand final.

The loser of that game will play the winner of the Cobar /Gulgong match.

The two times the sides have met this season have both been close encounters with Gulgong claiming bragging rights in Round 3 when they downed the Roosters 30-24 while Cobar triumphed 24-16 when they hosted Gulgong at TKMO in Round 10.

If Cobar can replicate their form on Saturday, when they produced a dominant 64-16 win over the Coonamble Bears in the final round of the regular season at TKMO, they can win again this week.

Cobar dominated their match with the Bears scoring four tries in the first 20 minutes.

Despite lacking some of their bigger players through the middle due to injury, the Roosters made the most of quick plays of the ball.

Captain/coach Loma Atuau led the Roosters try scoring with three tries, Nathan McAndrew and Tom Plater scored two each while Ash Davies, Jack Brown, Ben Simon and Jed Noonan also crossed for a try each.

Plater finished the game with a 100 per cent conversion rate, successfully landing all 10 of his conversion attempts.

Best & Fairest points went to Everett (3), Noonan (2 points and Players’ Player) and one point was earned by Plater.

CPS claim Nyngbar trophy … again!

The Cobar Public School (CPS) athletics team brought home the Nyngbar trophy after winning the point score competition at the annual athletics carnival held in Nyngan on Friday. CPS has won the trophy for the past five consecutive years.
