The Pumpettes netball team has won back-to-back Lip Sync for Netball titles after they claimed the ‘big lips’ trophy on Saturday night at the Cobar Netball Association’s fundraiser at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club. While the Pumpettes’ (pictured above at right) rendition of Bruno Mars’ The Lazy Song didn’t score the highest with the judges, the girls however did have some very good backing and with an extra 38 points in bribes ($1,900) it saw them finish as the winners. St John’s School ‘Bellas’ staff (pictured at right) collected this year’s People’s Choice award with their Pitch Perfect performance. The Quarantine Queens (WSPA dancers Alex Hernando, Seigrid Peters, Angela Francisco and Laura Barnes) scored highest with the judges (29 out of a possible 30) for their version of American rapper Todrick Hall’s Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrubs. The fun night raised over $12,000 for the netball association.

Outage affected 2,763 customers Essential Energy crews responded to an unplanned power outage affecting 2,763 customers in Cobar on Friday.

Essential Energy’s Operations Manager, North Western, Damian Smith said the network’s protection equipment activated at 12.14pm after detecting a fault on the high voltage transmission lines powering Cobar from Nyngan.

“Attending crews re-routed power around the local network and restored supply to all customers by 12.41pm,” Mr Smith said.

Investigations revealed that the outage was caused by a fallen power pole as a result of heavy rain in the area.

Last Thursday’s Council Meeting was a relatively long one of two hours and 40 minutes with quite a bit of discussion surrounding many of the items.

The rain event last week was excellent for Cobar, giving the lawns and parks a good soaking and helping with the volume of water held in local storages as well as at Burrendong Dam. Saturday’s Rugby League knockout carnival was a great event. The Cobar Roosters side played some very good team football with several players showing patches of brilliance.

In the end the Cobar side finished on top.

Georges Lenz, the originator of the Sound Chapel, will be back in town on Sunday to inspect the progress of the build and perhaps give it a spin.

Last Friday, Saturday and Sunday Council held an end of season pool party with free entry, free slide and free inflatable at the pool.

On Friday night Council also provided a free sausage sizzle at the pool which was a great opportunity for Council staff to talk to the youth of Cobar and find out from their perspective what their interests are and what they would like to see happen in Cobar.

On Monday I spent a short time at the Lilliane Brady Village recognizing the efforts of the staff who have gone beyond the call of duty to put in their own time while there has been a critical shortage of regular staff at the facility.

Today we have a meeting with Aurelia (Peak Gold Mines) and following this meeting we’ll have a Far North West Joint Organisation discussion with respect to the Cobar to Sydney air service with Fly Pelican.

I am happy to report that our General Manager Peter Vlatko has finally been released from hospital but will need time to recuperate from his procedures but we’re hoping he’ll be back at work soon.

Youthie is set to partially reopen

After being closed for the past year, the Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre (the Youthie) is set to re-open.

Cobar Shire Council was forced to close the centre at the end of March 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic and it has remained closed in readiness for renovation work.

Following delays, the building work is now not expected to commence until October 2021 and so Council has decided to re-open parts of the centre until the renovations commence.

Cobar Shire Council’s Director of Finance and Community Services, Kym Miller said the upgrade work has been delayed after the first round of quotes came in well over budget.

Mr Miller said a decision was made last week to partially re-open the centre.

He said Council had been approached by the local police as well as some of the centre’s regular users to see if it could be re-opened.

Police were concerned that with the Youthie drop-in centre closed, local youth were finding other ways to fill in their spare time.

Cr Julie Payne also raised the matter at the February Ordinary Council Meeting and asked if the centre could be re-opened until such time as the proposed building work commenced.

The Youthie’s drop-in centre, canteen, squash courts and gym will re-open to the public after Easter.

It’s expected they will remain open until the beginning of October when renovations are now expected to commence.

Mr Miller said the Youthie upgrade project has been revised and Council is working towards a new plan to upgrade the centre.

“The new plan may possibly see the top floor re-open,” Mr Miller told The Cobar Weekly on Monday.

In the original plan, the public would not have had access to the second floor as it could not be made accessible to all (ie the budget would not cover the installation of a lift).

At Council’s public meeting at the end of 2019 where the preliminary plans for the Youthie upgrade were revealed, there was strong negative feedback from a number of user groups who had expressed their disappointment that they would not be able to have access to the facilities on the upper floor.

The centre will reopen on Thursday April 8 and will be open from each week from Thursday to Sunday until October.

Building water turbines

A group of 250 students from eight different school groups from across the western region took part in the annual Outback Science & Engineering Challenge at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club yesterday. Students were tasked with eight different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges including building an efficient water turbine to generate electricity. Pictured above testing the turbines is Cobar Shire Council’s water engineer, Aldrin Lobo, who said he was very impressed with the students’ efforts.

Cash for showground improvements Cobar’s Ward Oval is one of eight showgrounds in the Barwon region to benefit from more than $2.82 million in funding under the NSW Government’s COVID-19 showground stimulus program.

Upper House MP Sam Farraway last week announced that Cobar’s showground along with facilities in Narrabri, Mendooran, Bourke, Tooraweenah, Warren, Baradine and Coonabarabran will all get upgrades to improve their showground facilities and infrastructure while supporting local work.

“Our local showgrounds are multi-use community hubs so it’s terrific to see this further $2,827,290 investment in infrastructure upgrades to keep them safe and functional for

future generations,” Mr Farraway said.

“Showgrounds provide facilities for agricultural shows and community groups with many also serving as relief centres during bushfires and floods to provide shelter for residents and animals and a base for emergency services,” he said.

The grants are aimed at providing a community kickstart by improving the safety, use and condition of showground infrastructure while also stimulating communities with work for carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters and other trades as well as suppliers.

Cobar has been allocated $383,100 to upgrade the Ward Oval carpark facility and roadworks.

Staff are first to get the vaccine

Dr Afshin headed up the local Cobar Primary Health Care Centre (CPHCC) COVID19 vaccination team that began administering vaccinations in Cobar last week.

Among the first to receive the dose as part of phase 1b of the Department of Health’s vaccination program were CPHCC staff members, including practice nurse, Sandy Negfeldt, pictured above with Dr Afshim. The centre is now taking bookings for vaccinations for eligible members of the public under phase 1b, which includes: people aged 70 and over; healthcare workers; critical and high risk workers; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 55 years and over; and adults with an underlying medical condition or disability.

Serious assault Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed a serious assault that occurred in the main street on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 11am outside the Cobar Furniture One store.

Police report the incident involved three males, one of which was a 33 year old Cobar man who was arrested later that day at a local business and charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

It’s believed he assaulted his 35 year old male victim leaving him with severe facial injuries.

The victim was taken to Cobar Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward.

Drugs and a gun

Cobar Police have arrested and charged an 18 year old man with firearm and drug offences following a traffic stop last week.

Around 8pm on Friday the man was stopped for a RBT/RDT while he was driving along Woodiwiss avenue.

When the vehicle was pulled over, police noticed the man, who was the single occupant of the vehicle, had possession of an unauthorized firearm and ammunition in his vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with possessing a firearm without a permit and possessing ammunition without a permit.

Drug charges are also pending after the 18 year old returned a positive random drug test.

He is expected to appear at the April sitting of Cobar Local Court to answer the charges.

WNSWLHD staff now vaccinated

Staff at the Cobar Health Service have been among the first western area residents to receive the first jabs of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

The Cobar staff rolled up their sleeves to be vaccinated when the Western NSW Local Health District mobile vaccination team recently visited.

The team is operating out of the Dubbo Hospital Vaccination Hub which is a central point of storage and distribution for the vaccinations that will be distributed to thousands of staff across the Local Health District.

Director of Dubbo Health Service’s Emergency Department, Dr Dan Stewart, said the vaccination was a safe and effective way of protecting the community.

“Staff here in Dubbo know what it’s like to care for COVID-19 patients, and we all know that COVID-19 has had an extraordinary impact on our communities,” Dr Stewart said.

Chief Executive of the Western NSW Local Health District, Scott McLachlan, said that vaccination of frontline health staff was an important milestone for communities across the region.

“We all want and need our local healthcare workers to be safe and healthy.

“COVID-19 vaccination is key in protecting them, and everyone else in our community,” Mr McLachlan said.

“The role being played here in Dubbo, as a vaccination hub, is very important.

“To get both doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to our staff is a huge undertaking and the Dubbo hub will be the logistics centre for all that activity.

“It’s a massive exercise but one we’ve planned in great detail.

“The COVID-19 vaccine offers an additional measure of protection and I want to join Dr Stewart in encouraging all health staff, and in fact everyone in the community, to take advantage of having the vaccine when it becomes available to them.”

Community recognition in NSW Parliament for local resident Well known local Kyle Loughran was presented with a Community Recognition certificate on Monday by State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler’s staff.

Each sitting day of parliament, members may read out a one minute Community Recognition Statement that congratulates or acknowledges the achievements of people or groups in the community; recognises charity work, retirement or honours and awards; or expresses words of thanks or condolences.

Last Wednesday Mr Butler chose to speak about Kyle, who he said had a “positive attitude to life and commitment to the town”.

“Kyle is a Director on the Board of the local RSL Club and also owns and operates a window cleaning business which allows him many opportunities to engage locals or visitors in conversation about his real passion — sports – be it local or international competitions,” Mr Butler said.

Mr Butler also spoke of Kyle’s recent appointment as the Manager of the Cobar Roosters Rugby League Under 18s side and praised him for his dedication over many years to assist both the junior and senior football clubs.

“Kyle has also been involved with the local tennis club and loves a good fair game of pool.

A long meeting

Despite not having a very big agenda, Cobar Shire’s Ordinary Monthly Meeting on Thursday was a very long one.

The meeting went for more than two and a half hours with the first hour of the meeting taken up by discussion of Cr Peter Yench’s three notices of motion.

His first motion for Council to put forward a representative to the NSW Water Directorate was lost with councillors not seeing it of being any benefit.

Cr Yench’s second motion to take immediate action on a preliminary report from the Cobar Economic Resiliency Project was lost as councillors thought it prudent to await the final report before taking action.

Only part of Cr Yench’s third motion (that councillors be issued with a report of successful grant outcomes over the past two years) was supported by his fellow councillors. The other three parts of his motion were lost.

In the meeting proper, Councillors approved all of the requests for donations.

They also agreed (in principal) to allocate two areas at the Cobar Airport for the construction of further hangars.

Councillors also discussed the Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment—Western Gas report at last weeks meeting.

Cr Yench said he was keen to see the Western Gas project go ahead as he had been pushing for a gas supply to Cobar for a number of years. He said it would be an economic bonus to have a gas power station in Cobar.

Cr Bob Sinclair encouraged his fellow councillors to research the subject further following a shift towards fracking of gas, which he said is “a very contentious issue around Australia”.

Cr Peter Maxwell said he’d recently attended a meeting about the proposed gas project where a number of affected landholders we very concerned as to how it will affect their bore water supplies.

Our native frog looks a lot like Queensland cane toad A frog that looked very much like a cane toad was caught in a local’s backyard last week and handed into the Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) Cobar office.

Western LLS senior land services officer Brian Dohnt took delivery of the suspect amphibian on Thursday and had the job of determining if it was a cane toad (which is poisonous and classified as a pest).

Mr Dohnt said while it did look a lot like a cane toad, it was however an Eastern Banjo Frog which is native to the area.

Like cane toads, Banjo Frogs can be quite warty but while the toad is dry, Banjo Frogs are moist.

“The concern is that people think they are cane toads because of the size of them and how they sit up like a toad,” Mr Dohnt said.

By frog standards Banjo Frogs are large (up to 8cm) but cane toads are much larger – up to 15cm.

“We do not want people to be killing them because they are a native frog,” Mr Dohnt said.

“If any landholders have got any concerns and they see a frog (or toad) and catch it, they can bring it in to us and we can identify it.”

Mr Dohnt said a cane toad has previously been found in Cobar.

He said about four or five years ago it was found that a cane toad had hitched a ride on a golf buggy trailer brought to Cobar from Brisbane.

Vinnies is looking for volunteers

Vinnies is looking for locals wanting to give back to the Cobar community by volunteering at the Marshall Street shop.

Vinnies NSW Regional Retail Manager Tanya Gooden said after the Vinnies Cobar shop temporarily closed last year due to COVID-19, it has reopened with safety measures in place to ensure the wellbeing of volunteers and customers.

“We have a lovely group of volunteers who have been able to make a positive impact in the local community,” Ms Gooden said.

“For a lot of people the events of the past year have highlighted the importance of community and looking out for people in need.

“There’s a great community of people within Vinnies shops, along with the knowledge that the sales are used to support people who fall on hard times.”

The Cobar Vinnies store is one of 225 retail shops that operates throughout NSW to offer a range of pre-loved items for customers to purchase.

Sales from Vinnies shops are used to fund support services offering food, clothing, financial aid, crisis accommodation and other assistance.

Volunteering requires people to donate a few hours of their time each week to help with roles including customer service, sorting donations and maintaining the day-to-day running of the shop.

Hot and sunny all Easter weekend After a week of mild weather, it’s looking like it will be a very warm Easter with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting it will be warm, dry and sunny in Cobar all over the Easter long weekend.

The Bureau is forecasting a top of 30 degrees for Friday and Saturday and 31 for Sunday and Monday.

This comes after a mild week of below average temperatures.

Light rain on Wednesday night, registered 0.02mm in the gauge on Thursday morning with the temperatures reaching 24.8 degrees later in the day.

Friday was slightly warmer at 25.2 with Saturday reaching a top of 26.7 and 26.9 was the maximum on Sunday.

A cool change overnight had Cobar residents waking up on Monday morning to a crisp 10.6 degrees at 7am, before reaching a top of 24.8 degrees later in the day.

Young detectives on the job

Young detectives in the making, Keelan Atuau, Henry and Clare Thompson, Lenny Hill, Kasalia and Aisea Fakahua attended last Thursday’s Little Wings puppet show at the Cobar Bowling and Golf Club and helped puppeteer Jenny Ellis to solve the mystery of the missing blue items. The interactive free show was well received by the 170 children and adults in attendance. Jenny also visited the Cobar Preschool to help children to make their own puppets. Shows and puppet making workshops were also held in Bourke and Nyngan last week with the Little Wings western area tour funded by the NSW Government’s Restart Program and delivered by Outback Arts.

LiveBetter team out and about

LiveBetter staff and clients dressed up in red on Friday to help create awareness and support Ronald McDonald House in Orange. Several staff members and clients have had cause to use this supportive facility which provides a home away from home for sick children, or children undergoing medical procedures. The house is jam-packed with toys and games, has an indoor playground and provides lots of family friendly activities. CPS welcome new faces to their P&C Alex Lennon has been welcomed as the new president of the Cobar Public School P&C committee.

Alex took on the top job at the group’s recent annual general meeting.

He will be assisted by Emily Miller as vice president, Erika Muldoon in the role of secretary and Courtney Campbell as treasurer.

Flood assistance extended to Cobar Cobar Shire residents who have been adversely affected by recent storms and floods are now eligible for clean up and recovery grants.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton announced earlier this week that eligible residents, primary producers and small businesses in the Cobar, Brewarrina, Gilgandra, Gunnedah, Gwydir, Lachlan, Moree Plains, Narrabri and Walgett local government areas can now apply for recovery grants through the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

He said the Australian and New South Wales governments have agreed to cost share recovery grants to small business of up $50,000 and grants to primary producers of up $75,000.

“The package will provide direct assistance to those who need it, helping people get back on their feet sooner,” Mr Coulton said .

“These storms and floods have been an enormous blow on the back of the drought, but I know that communities in the region are resilient and, with the support of the Australian and NSW governments, they will recover strongly from this latest set-back.”

Learner feedback

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler is calling on learner drivers in his electorate to share their driving experiences with the Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety.

Mr Butler is a member of the committee which is looking at what support learner drivers in rural and regional NSW need in order to meet the requirements for getting their driver’s licence.

“I know young people in the bush can face greater challenges when it comes to meeting the requirements to get their L plates.

“This can have a huge impact on their ability to get an after school or weekend job, participate in sports and education opportunities.

“The inquiry is calling for ideas on how to address issues such as limited access to training and licensing services. It also includes looking at how driver simulators and other technology could assist learners.”

Mr Butler said the Committee wants to hear from individuals and community groups in rural and regional NSW about their experiences of obtaining a driver’s licence and how it can be improved.

Submissions can be a few lines telling the Committee about your experience.

The Cobar Girl Guides are thrilled to have been able to move into their new Guide Hall in Maidens Avenue. The girls are also busting to test out all of the new facilities including their camping area in the back yard (which they had hoped to do last week but it was too wet after heavy rain).

• The Cobar golf course has many obstacles,

not only for golfers but also for the many people who walk, ride their bikes (and even drive through the course). When competitions are being played it then becomes even more hazardous with balls flying around the course.

Golfers have requested that locals consider not using the course at all when competitions are taking place as they are concerned someone could get seriously injured.

• We hear Mayor Peter Abbott joined the Lilliane Brady Village staff for morning tea on Monday morning to acknowledge the staff for all their hard work and to praise many who “have gone above and beyond” while the facility has been short on staff.

• Who’d have thought there were so many talented people living in Cobar! And most of them are teaching our children! Good on Ya to the Cobar High School, Cobar Public School and St John’s staff members who took part in the Lipsync for Netball fundraiser at the Golfie on Saturday night. And well done to the St John’s Bellas who took out the People’s Choice award. Good on Ya also to all the other Lipsync performers for a very entertaining show.

Local photographer (and a Cobar tourism officer) Samantha Smith has had one of her pics (which was taken at the big ‘COBAR’ sign) featured on the front cover of The Wanderer magazine April edition which is reportedly Australia’s largest RV Club magazine. That’s great promotion for Cobar. Well done Sam! • Good on Ya to Fire and Rescue NSW Station 256 retained firefighter, Alex Lennon who has recently returned from helping out with the clean up effort at Port Macquarie after last week’s flooding event. Alex and the station’s famous ‘Black Panther’ tanker were part of Strike Team Quebec, and he worked alongside other fire crews from Delroy, Trangie, Dubbo and Warren.

• WOW! How exciting is the news that former Western Studio of Performing Arts Cobar student/teacher Tainga Savage is

part of the cast of the musical Hamilton which premiered at the Sydney Lyric Theatre on Sunday!

• Believe it or not! Len Fitton is one of the

luckiest blokes we know after he had his much loved Akubra hat, that he lost about nine months ago, recently returned. Len lost it on a trip to Trangie and thought it had blown out the window. Turns out he’d left it at the Trangie Cultural Centre. Without a name on it, the staff went through their visitors book contacting everyone to see if they could find the owner as they knew it was a pretty special hat. (It was very special as it had five $100 notes tucked into the brim which Len said made it fit better).

Good On Ya to Trangie’s Jenna Moss who ensured Len’s hat (and cash) were safely returned.

PUBLIC NOTICES Cobar Quids

Cobar Quids are a ‘shop locally’ initiative of the Cobar Business Association and operate within guidelines set down by the Australian Mint. They can only be spent in Cobar. Individuals cannot redeem them for cash, only businesses can. The Cobar Business Association ‘sells’ Quids to organisations and individuals to be used as prizes, rewards, bonuses or gifts.

When someone pays with Quids in a local business, that business can then redeem the Quids for cash at Cobar Shire Council (the association’s collection and dispensation agency). Many of Cobar’s businesses accept Cobar Quids—you can buy groceries, gifts, toys, homewares, clothing, jewellery, fuel, meals, alcohol, stationery, magazines, lottery tickets, tyres, electrical goods, craft supplies, makeup, perfume, coffee and beer. You can also use Cobar Quids to pay bills like council rates or your water account.

As per the Australian Mint guidelines: Businesses cannot give cash as change for Quids and individuals cannot ‘cash in’ their Quids at a business or at Council. However, if you have a $50 quid, you may swap it for smaller denominations (e.g. 10 x $5) if you are worried you won’t spend all $50 in one go.

The Cobar Quids program aims to encourage residents to keep their money circulating in Cobar.

HEAVY VEHICLE PLANT MECHANIC Council is seeking to appoint an experienced, trade qualified Mechanic to join our Workshop team. Teams decided for touch grand finals Some outstanding touch football was played by all teams in the semi final decider games on Thursday afternoon at Ward Oval.

The winners from each match, Orange Blazers, Yellow Jackets, RND’s and Blue Marlins, have earned themselves spots in tomorrow’s grand finals.

In the juniors competition, it was the top team, Orange Blazers, who progressed first to the all important grand final game, after they secured a big win in their match with Blue Thunder.

While Blue Thunder played their best game of the season, the Orange Blazers stepped up to run in some quality tries to help them secure their grand final spot.

Rowdy Barton, Jaxon Waugh and Clair Cousins were best on ground for the Blazers.

Talas Burke played his game of the season for the Thunder and was well supported by team mates Cohen Nicholson and Rhylee Patterson all game.

In the other juniors game a very determined Yellow Jackets side upset the Red Devils to win their elimination match by one try.

Gabriel Harris crossed the try line three times for the Devils, but it was the combination of George McDonald and Kai McCosker that proved to be the winning difference that helped the Yellow Jackets to victory.

For the Devils, Billy George, Nate Martin and Lila Armstrong were all strong in attack.

Eli Martin and Lara Stephens were among the Yellow Jackets’ best on field.

Orange Blazers in tomorrow’s junior grand final. With a number of speedsters in both sides, it’s expected to be a fast paced game and, by all accounts, will be a thrilling grand final.

RND’s and Blue Marlins will meet in the senior grand final match tomorrow after they won their semis last week.

RND’s scored a convincing win over Afta Midnight despite Ryan Urquhart throwing everything in his game repertoire at his RND’s opposition.

The fantastic attacking combination of Zane Taylor, Troy Robertson and Aisha Schofield was what afforded the RND’s the win.

In the other game, Blue Marlins had to work hard for their win over the Green Beans.

The Green Beans pushed them the whole game with Kai Taylor, Maddie Bruce and Sosie Barton having strong performances in attack.

The trio proved to be very difficult for the Marlins to contain.

The Marlins’ Damon Bruce again was dominant in both defence and attack and, with a number of line breaks, he linked up with his inside players a number of times to have a hand in the majority of the Marlins’ tries which they scored on their way to the win.

The seniors grand final game will definitely be one to watch as both teams have flair in attack and are strong in defence.

RND’s and Blue Marlins will be out to assert their dominance and show off their improved touch football skills.

Presentations will directly follow each grand final.

CATS in a big hurry at the end of the triathlon season There was a field of eight competitors (and one official) up early on Sunday morning for the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) final triathlon event of the 2020/2021 season.

Fast times were recorded by all eight competitors with six members setting new personal best times.

The overall winner was Chris Freeman, in what was his first event for the season.

Freeman was the only Long Course competitor and knocked eight minutes off his previous best time from last season.

He set a new PB of 1hr 10min 33sec during the 500m swim, 20km ride and 4km run course.

In second place was Zac Broughton who completed the Short Course (300m swim, 10km ride and 2km run) in 37min 46sec which was also a new PB for him.

Finishing third was the new team of Greg McKervey and Bianka Jacobson who nominated a time of 41min and finished the Short Course in 38min 26sec.

Axel Fairfull had the fastest swim leg of the day; McKervey recorded the fastest run; and Chris Powell had the quickest bike leg.

Tommy Bryan and Issac Theakston finished with new PBs in both their swim and run legs while Axel Fairfull recorded a new PB on his run leg.

Following the event, the CATS members were treated to a barbecue breakfast provided

Roberts grabs the last lot of points

Tyler Roberts emerged from the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Tuesday night with the majority of the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club championship points at the clubs final competition swim of the season.

In his first season with the Yabbies, Roberts has been improving and last week won both the 30 metres and 100 metres handicapped freestyle events.

He was 0.03 seconds off his nominated time in the 30m swim and finished in front of Chris Powell (second with 0.16) and Bill Fugar (third on 0.21).

Roberts won the 100m event after finishing within 0.63 seconds of his nominated time.

Lucas Hardy ran second with 0.72 and back in third place was Paul Swainston on 0.88.

Matt Harland had a return to form to win the 50 metres swim.

He was 0.18 seconds off his time with Cameron van Breugel just behind on 0.22.

Hardy and Fugar tied for third spot after both finished within 0.38 seconds of their nominated times.

The Brace Relay novelty event was a walk across the pool with Powell and Swainston finishing as the victors with 0.24 seconds off their nominated time.

Second were van Breugel and Fugar with 0.25 and back in third place were Hardy and Roberts on 0.72.

With the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool to close this weekend, the Yabbies held their final event of the season, the Brace Relay championships, last night.

Absolutely glorious conditions for bowls A field of 14 bowlers took to the Golfie greens on Sunday in what could only be described as near perfect conditions.

In Game 1 John Daly combined with Randall Hall to take the bragging rights over Daly’s wife Karen and Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey after a close win of +3.

The second game was claimed by the combination of Doug Hudson, Dean McLeod and Craig Grimmond who finished with a +6 win over the team of John Goonrey, Barry Bargwanna and Kyle Roberts.

The overall winners of the day however

were Daniel Holt and Helen Boddy who did a demolition job on Don Roberts and Frank Singleton to win by a big score of +15.

This week’s winner of George’s Giraffe Award was John Goonrey who said his bowls were that far away from the head that he could probably be given next week’s award in advance.

Bowlers are reminded that the Championships draws have been finalised and dates for completion of the early rounds have been set.

Weather fines up for weekend golf

The golf course didn’t quite dry out in time for last Wednesday’s ladies Golf Par game but it was however fine for the weekend rounds.

The Vets Mabel McKenzie Brooch was played on Saturday with 14 participants.

The Division 1 winner was Narelle Kriz with Division 2 won by Geraldine Francisco and Glenda Peebles was winner of Division 3.

Marlene Wynd was the best senior vet.

A ball competition played in conjunction with the Brooch was taken out by Glenda Peebles with a score of 70 net.

Geraldine Francisco (75) was the runner-up followed by Marlene Wynd (77), Narelle Kriz (78) and Sally Bannister on 79 net.

The best with the short stick was Jannine Wilkin with 25 putts for the day.

Some very low scores were recorded in Sunday’s Stableford with many a ball lost in the grass on the fairways that have shot up after the rain.

Sally Bannister survived a countback from Geraldine Francisco to win the day after each scored 30 points.

Serena Fraser placed third with 28 points, Karen Manns had 26 and Ann Dunn finished the day with 25.

The Nearest the Pin winners for each grade on the 11th hole were Sally Bannister, Daphne Cross and Pat Polack.

The weather forecast for the coming week looks ideal for all the scheduled games over the Easter break.

Today and Friday will be Stableford rounds with a Stroke game on Saturday.

A Canadian (draw for partner) will be played on Sunday with a Par set down for Monday for those who aren’t ‘golfed out’ by then.

Roosters season off to a sensational start The Cobar Roosters ruled the roost on their home turf on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval when they claimed the 2021 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League pre-season carnival shield.

In front of an appreciative home crowd the

large and mobile Roosters outfit put on three dominant displays in their First Grade games, scoring a total of 74 points while only having their try line crossed on one occasion.

The Roosters opened the day with a first up 20-6 win over Gilgandra in Round 1.

The Cobar Roosters First Grade team has gotten off to a sensational start to the 2021 Castlereagh Rugby League season claiming the preseason carnival trophy at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday. The Roosters were undefeated in three games in which they scored 74 points while only having their try line crossed on one occasion.

They backed that up with an even better 30-0 result over Coonamble in Round 4 but it was the final where the Roosters would put on their best display to finish with an emphatic 24-0 win over Gulgong.

Gulgong didn’t have as smooth a run to Saturday’s final as the Roosters did.

In their first game in Round 3 the Terriers drew 12-all with Gilgandra and then had a close 12-8 win over Baradine in Round 5, with that match played just before the final.

The Roosters, led this season by new captain Loma Atuau, were definitely fresher going into Saturday’s final and it was their superior fitness (coupled with a full bench of subs) that saw them through to a walkover win of the Gulgong visitors.

Immediately after the kick-off the Roosters scored three quick tries and then pretty much had it all their own way throughout the rest of the match.

The Roosters were pleased to welcome back playmaker and goal kicker Jimmy Neyland this season after Neyland had announced at the end of the 2020 season that he would be retiring.

Neyland however had a change of heart and on Saturday looked to playing as well as he ever has.

The Roosters fans also got to have a look at a few of the new players this season including their new Hooker, Tom Platter, who has big shoes to fill taking over from last year’s superstar player Jarrad Whitty.

Like Whitty before him, Platter is also quick around the ruck and he crossed for a number of tries for the Roosters on Saturday.

Despite the fact that three clubs, Dunedoo, Trangie and Coonabarabran did not participate in the knockout carnival, the day provided a good pre-season hit out for the five clubs in attendance but certainly the performance by the Roosters suggests that they will be a force to be reckoned with in season 2021.
