Women in Business dinner on Friday night Guest speakers at the dinner were former Cobar Business Association president Shaat the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club as part owner of JKM Dynamic Fitness Gym, Amie ron Harland said all three speakers were imof the NSW Government’s 2022 Small Hill, electrical engineer Janine Lea-Barrett and pressive and gave their audience plenty to think about.

“We asked each speaker to share their experiences in business and how they seem to have it all—run a business, have a family and also have time for personal interests and study.”

Seigrid advised there’s never a perfect moment to start a business after she’d shelved her original business idea for nine years before eventually making it happen.

She recommended that passion be your driving force and to trust your gut as to what feels right for you.

Being flexible and able to adapt as she went along helped her to succeed.

She encouraged women in business to support each other, to be personable and to show they care about their customers.

Amie attributes her success in business to her passion for the fitness industry, to making the most of the opportunities that were presented to her, to being empowered (through education and life long learning) and to be willing to surrender if needed (ie asking for help, advice or ideas).

Janine threw down a challenge to the dinner guests asking them to reflect on what they considered “having it all” was.

Cobar Rotary generously supports Tour de OROC ride This year’s Tour de OROC charity ride raised almost $150,000 for the Macquarie Home Stay accommodation facility in Dubbo.

Among the group of riders in this year’s charity event were Cobar cyclist Trudy Griffiths, former Cobar resident and retained firefighter Chris Freeman (from Mudgee) and another former resident, Stuart Harland (who now lives in Dubbo).

The riders and their support crew were given a warm reception as they rode from Bourke into Cobar last Thursday afternoon.

They were met with a cooling spray of water (provided by Freeman’s Fire and Rescue NSW Cobar Station 256 former crew) along with a group of local bystanders who cheered them on as they rode in.

Thursday was Day 4 of the six day 1,140km ride with the group having ridden 160km that day from Bourke to Cobar in very warm conditions Rotary Club of Dubbo South president Matthew Dickerson said while this year’s event had come up a bit short on the $170,000 tally they raised on their last ride in 2020, they were however pleased with the huge effort put in by all those involved.

Trudy was one of the highest individual fundraisers with a tally of close to $8,500, Chris individually contributed $2,348 (which included a $500 donation from the Cobar Firies) and Stuart raised $3,961.

Andrew Graham from the Rotary Club of Dubbo South spoke at Thursday’s dinner and praised the Rotary Club of Cobar members for their warm welcome, their practical help with catering and also their donation of $1,000.

“The success of an event like this depends so much on the local communities we go through and to be able to rely on the Cobar Rotary Club is just fantastic,” Mr Graham said.

Rotary Club of Cobar secretary Gordon Hill said the Cobar club had supported the biennial Tour de OROC event since its inception in 2013.

“It is something that is essential for our community. I think statistics prove that one in five people who use Macquarie Home Stay come from the Cobar district, so it’s a facility that is well used and Rotary have been keen to support it all the way through,” Mr Hill said.

On Monday Trudy said apart from “a sore bum” she’d pulled up “pretty good” after the ride.

“They were a great bunch of like-minded friendly people with a supportive crew.”

The Rotary Club of Cobar hosted the Tour de OROC riders and crew for dinner and breakfast at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club last week. In addition to feeding them, the Cobar club also handed over a donation totalling $1,000 with the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club also chipping in with a $500 donation. Sydney band, Edgecliff, booked to play two gigs in Cobar Emerging Sydney band, Edgecliff, has been booked to play at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club this Easter and will also return in September as the headline act for the Running On Empty 2022 Festival.

While the band of former school mates may be based on Sydney’s northern beaches, one of its members, lead singer and guitarist, Will Howell, has a strong connection to Cobar and Cobar’s musical history.

Will learnt his craft as a musician from his father, Jason Howell (of Typhoon fame) who, in turn, learnt from his grandfather, Keith Mitchell (from The Tymekeepers).

“Our family has been involved in music in Cobar spanning over 60-70 years,” Jason said.

“William’s great, grandfather Keith Mitchell was the founding member of The Tymekeepers.

“They played shows for the entire area at clubs and pubs and were the main entertainment for most balls and dances of the era.”

Jason said Typhoon started their musical

career in his pop’s back shed, which was where the Tymekeepers before them had gathered regularly to practice.

“I would be in there from a very young age listening and watching the group master their tunes,” Jason recalls.

He said his grandfather Keith taught him and brother Brad, and also Typhoon’s other band members, Jason ‘Moon’ Arnold and Gary ‘Locko’ Loughran, how to put together their tunes and prepare for a show.

“Typhoon were very fortunate to have Keith get up on stage and play with us at one of our gigs at the New Occidental Hotel,” Jason recalls.

“Keith got a great reception and was labelled ‘the oldest living teenager in the world’.”

Will started out playing gigs with Typhoon at age 14.

He played as their lead guitarist in 2019 at Cobar’s Tribute Night for Keno Josephson and he’s also played with his dad and uncle at a few COHOE Roosters Rugby League Masters

“Will also played the very first Running On Empty Festival with Typhoon back in 2018 and he really enjoyed being on stage with Terry Serio [from the Running on Empty movie] and performing the movie’s theme song It All Comes Runnin’ Back.

“So it’s very special the Edgecliff band get to do the 2022 festival on the 40th year anniversary of the cult movie,” Jason said.

Jason is now Edgecliff’s manager and is stoked about bringing Will and the band back to his home town of Cobar to play.

“Edgecliff’s early learning days mirrored that of Brad and I,” Jason said.

“They’re five young boys who all went to high school together and had a passion for music. All but William had never played a musical note before picking various instruments in my jam room!

“Each member of Edgecliff learnt their craft at our house, which has brought back so many fond memories of the early days way back when we cut our teeth learning from all the great muso’s Cobar produced.”

Jason said Edgecliff (made up of Will, Kai, Jesse, Nick and Jacob) have evolved and are now one of the premier acts to come out of the northern beaches.

Their debut single Waitless (which the boys described as a “hard edge, 70s psyche rock/ post grunge style”) was released in April 2021, and one the band describes as their “benchmark track”.

It was quickly followed up by their second single, Belong to the Crowd, which was released last May. In addition to the release of a number of Youtube clips and playing gigs around Sydney (when COVID does not interrupt them), Edgecliff has recently released their new single Calling For More which will feature on their first EP later in the year.

“Edgecliff has recently signed and have been taken onboard by On The Map PR team which is super exciting for their future,” Jason said.

After their Easter performance, Edgecliff will be back for Running On Empty’s 40 year reunion in September.

Cobar Shire Council swears in their 12th councillor

Cobar Shire Council’s newest councillor, Michael Prince, was officially sworn in at last Thursday’s Ordinary Council Meeting. The election of Mr Prince to the council, via a by-election vote earlier this month, now sees the council with a full complement of 12 councillors. Cobar Shire Council welcomed new councillor Michael Prince to their Ordinary Council Meeting last Thursday afternoon.

The election of Mr Prince at the recent by-election now brings council up to its full complement of 12 councillors.

With only a small meeting agenda, Mr Prince’s first meeting as a new councillor was only a short one and the meeting was completed in less than 40 minutes.

In the absence of the mayor Peter Abbott and deputy mayor Jarrod Marsden (who were both apologies for the meeting), councillors elected Cr Bob Sinclair to act as the meeting’s chair.

In discussions on the General Manager’s Operational Report presented to council, Cr Julie Payne raised concerns about the water budget deficit.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko advised that due to the significant cost of supplying water to Cobar residents, staff will be providing council with a true understanding of what will be required to ensure the water fund does not continue to be in deficit.

Mr Vlatko advised the complete budget will come before council and then go out for public comment before it is adopted.

In discussions about grant funded projects, Cr Lillian Simpson called for an update on the Town Hall Cinema Carpark which is on hold due to the structural integrity of the adjacent Town Hall Cinema building.

Mr Vlatko advised the hall roof appears to be collapsing. He said Council is awaiting a report from a structural engineer on the state of building before any repair work can be carried out or it needs to be demolished (if repairing it is not a viable option).

The workshops aim to improve participants’ awareness and understanding of mental health issues and highlight the connection between mental health and personal safety.

They give participants confidence, strategies and pathways to find support when needed to help preserve their mental health and that of their family members and friends.

Topics covered include: stigma around mental health, risks to mental health, anxiety and depression, destructive thinking, acute stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), dementia, suicide, affects of alcohol and drugs on mental health, tackling the tough conversations, relationships, financial stress and succession, ways to build and maintain good mental health and where to go to get support.

Long power outage

Seniors love new activity

Essential Energy crews responded quickly to an unplanned power outage in Cobar on Sunday afternoon.

The electricity network’s protection equipment activated automatically after detecting a fault, switching power off to 2,772 homes and businesses around 6pm on Sunday.

Crews commenced a patrol of the electricity network and located a broken crossarm on the mainline between Nyngan and Cobar, which is likely due to the storm which impacted the area.

After ensuring it was safe to do so, crews were able to restore power to affected customers just after 8.30pm on Sunday using a secondary power supply.

Repairs were carried out on Monday and the network was returned to its normal configuration later that afternoon.

Cooler mornings

The stormy weather last week brought cooler conditions with Friday morning dropping to a low of 13.2 degrees.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, it was Cobar’s lowest temperature recorded so far this year.

Thursday’s minimum was 15 degrees before reaching a top of 29.6 during the day.

The mercury only reached a top of 21.8 degrees on Sunday and it was followed by a cool night with residents waking up to a low of 14.9 degrees on Monday morning.

The scattered showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, Thursday and also overnight on Sunday only put 3.4mm of rain in the Bureau’s gauge in Cobar for the week.

A top of 31 is expected today while tomorrow should reach 28 degrees.

Friday and Saturday should be partly cloudy with a maximum of 25 forecast for both days while Sunday’s expected top is 27 degrees.

The cooler mornings will also continue with 13 the expected minimum on Friday, 12 on Saturday, 13 on Sunday and we’ll be waking up to a predicted 15 degrees on Monday.

A newly introduced activity on this year’s Seniors Week program, a painting workshop with local artist, Seigrid Peters, proved to be a big hit with the 12 participants on Friday morning at the Services Club. COVID booster pop-up clinic in Cobar tomorrow Staff from the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) will be conducting another pop-up COVID vaccination clinic in Cobar tomorrow.

The walk-in clinic (from 9.30am to 4.30pm) at the Services Club will provide Pfizer vaccines for 12 years and older and also kids Pfizer for five to 11 year olds. No booking is required.

WNSWLHD experts, Dr Mel Berry, Medical Director Clinical Quality and Patient Safety, and Emergency Medicine Specialist, and Dr Allan Kerrigan, Paediatrician and Staff Specialist, are urging people to get a COVID19 booster as soon as possible.

Both have worked extensively during the WNSWLHD’s pandemic response.

Between the COVID Care in the Community program and frontline work, Dr Berry and Dr Kerrigan have drawn on their experience to outline why a booster should not be delayed.

Dr Berry said studies show that the immunity created by COVID-19 vaccines wanes over time.

“We’ve seen how effective vaccinations have been in protecting people from serious illness.

“Hospital admissions haven’t risen at the same rate as case numbers,” Dr Berry said.

“But that protection reduces over time and we’re now entering a time of year when people typically get sick more often.

“Boosters give the immune system a jump start, so you have an added layer of protection.

“It’s a simple equation – get your booster and your chances of getting seriously ill are significantly reduced.”

Boosters strengthen the immune system, helping to maintain a higher level of protection.

For immunocompromised, boosters and third doses build a response similar to those not immunosuppressed.

Dr Kerrigan said getting a booster will also protect your loved ones and your entire community.

“Boosters may help prevent transmission, and the protection they give helps to keep those around you safe as well,” Dr Kerrigan said.

“With higher rates of disadvantage and chronic disease, our district has a large number of people at greater risk of serious illness, which includes the elderly and immunocompromised.

“We all know someone at greater risk, so even if you don’t think you need that extra protection at least do your bit to help protect them.”

The Omicron variant is highly-transmissible and can spread quickly through communities.

Vulnerable communities have a greater risk of serious illness if transmission occurs.

Some of the state’s most vulnerable communities are in Western NSW. Getting a booster will also help reduce the impact on health facilities and protect frontline staff.

Caring for COVID-19 patients requires significant, additional resources and that impact can affect other services and the operation of our health facilities.

The pressure on the health workforce is increased when staff are required to isolate.

COVID is everywhere and we all have the power to help reduce its impact.

CSA Mine is a high-grade underground copper mine located in Cobar, Central Western NSW. Employing over 400 people, CSA Mine is now looking for a new member to join the team.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic, proactive and outcome focused Compliance Officer to join the Health, Safety, Environment and Training department.

In this role you will be responsible for: • Identifying, evaluating and advising on compliance obligations, controls and compliance systems to support the HSET Management System • Implementing compliance oversight and quality assurance processes to monitor existing policies, procedures and operational practices to ensure effectiveness of compliance obligations and controls • Implementing ongoing review processes for key compliance policies, procedures and manuals to ensure they are up to date and aligned to current standards of compliance, and up to date with legislative requirements • Preparing reports to Management on any significant breach of, or material deviation from, the Compliance Policies, Frameworks and compliance obligations.

• Developing and implementing a CSA Mine records management auditing program to ensure ongoing compliance • Implementing and managing weekly targets for Safe Task Observations, Workplace Inspections, JSA reviews and Contractor audits to ensure site compliance • Maintaining the Mine Record Book to ensure legislative compliance and the capture of all material engagement with external regulatory authorities • Maintaining the CSA Mine auditing program • Ensuring Health Safety and Training inspections, monitoring and reporting is completed on time and in line with the internal CSA Requirements and any other legal or regulatory requirements • Ensuring documentation and records meet relevant CMPL and legal requirements • Managing general HSET administrative duties including purchase orders, letters, communication forms, meeting minutes, posters, graphs, archiving etc.

About you: • Proven Certificate IV in Business Administration (desirable) • Certificate IV in WHS • Australian Driver’s Licence • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a related role (preferably in the mining industry)

Two tactical games of netball played out

Two very tactical games were played in Round 8 of the Fast5 netball competition 2 Marshall St | 6836 2102 last Tuesday night with Fast Fobs and CynSteel finishing as winners. cobarrsl@bigpond.com At half time in their match with KML, Fast Fobs narrowly trailed 9-11 however they took a big lead when they elected to play their powerplay quarter in the third quarter.

Their gun shooter Sam Vaka rarely missed and took full advantage of the double points scoring 18 points for the quarter.

Elleise Woodbridge did her best at the other end of the court trying to keep KML in touch when she scored a three point supershot but the Fobs had a 27-16 advantage going into the last quarter.

It was however KML’s turn to play their powerplay and they had some work to do to wrestle back the 11 point deficit.

Things were looking up when Woodbridge scored her second supershot for the game (which was the first six point goal for a player this season) however KML were unable to convert any more goals after that and Fast Fobs finished with a 31-22 win.

Best on court for Fast Fobs were their centre court players Elias Aumua and Jayden Paul while KML were well served by Woodbridge and also their defender Molly Carter.

The Favourite Fivers of the match (as chosen by the opposition were Sam Vaka (Fast Fobs) and Jayden Harvey (KML).

Why Did We Say Yes? (WDWSY) only had 7pm five available players for their Round 8 game Betty’s room last week against CynSteel.

It was a hot night and they knew it would be Members only ~ Limited numbers hard for them to keep up and so they chose to use their powerplay in the first quarter given Saturday 3.30pm they would have fresh legs.

It worked in their favour but only gave them a narrow two point lead going into the second quarter.

They did however match CynSteel for much of the second quarter but Cynsteel pulled ahead to lead 9-8 by the half time break.

CynSteel opted to use their powerplay in the third quarter and they scored 10 more points to push their lead out to 19-11 going into the last quarter. By then both teams were tired and goals were hard to come by. CynSteel eventually finished as 22-12 winners.

CynSteel’s best players were their shooters Brianna Manns and Mollie Harley while WDWSY’s best on court were Keetah Richardson (shooting) and Troy Hill (centre and defence).

The Favourite Fivers were Troy Hill (WDWSY) and Rex Adams (CynSteel).

Finals will be played next Tuesday with the top team to play fourth spot while second and third will play off. The winners of both games will then progress to the grand final the following week.

The 2022 Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League season will get under way this Saturday at Gulgong’s Billy Dunn Oval with the annual League Tag and Youth League knockout competitions.

The season will commence next Saturday for the First Grade teams with the Seniors knockout to be played in Gilgandra.

The competition proper will commence on April 23 when Cobar hosts Gilgandra in a fundraising day for the Royal Flying Doctor Service in a Round 1 clash.

Tough going on the golf course

It was tough going again on the golf course this past week for the men golfers.

In last Wednesday’s Stableford competition, Steve Manns managed to score only 33 points but that was good enough for him to claim first place.

Ron Craw, back playing golf after a long time away from the sport, took out second place with 32 points.

The other four scores were not worth mentioning.

A Four-Ball-Multiplier was contested on Saturday.

Men’s Golf captain Alec Fraser and super vet Max Phillips cruised to an easy victory with 67 stableford points.

In second place were Scott Mayne and Geoff Rorke on 60 points.

Jay Egan and Peter ‘China’ Brien had to be content with third place after they finished with 53 points.

Rorke was the winner of the individual competition with 37 stableford points.

Second place was taken out by Max Phillips with 37 points.

Barflies were big winners last week The Golfie Spearchuckers, Golfie Dartaholics and the Empire Barflies all recorded wins in last Wednesday’s darts competition.

Golfie Spearchuckers won their match 7-4 over Empire Pirates; Golfie Dartaholics also finished with a 7-4 victory over Golfie Gophers; and the Empire Barflies had a big 11-0 win over Western Outlaws.

Hundreds and high scores were recorded by: Empire Barflies—Craig Youd 121 and Jubilee Tovakuta 100, 121; Golfie Dartaholics—Ben Jebb 100, Craig Jones 125 and Brian Sylvester 100, 100, 100; Golfie Gophers—Robert Henderson 100 and Les Hooker 100; Golfie Spearchuckers—Dick Tulloh 133 and Robbie Cummins 124; Empire Pirates—Brendhan Freeman 100 and Waylon Ward 100.

Tequila Hooker with 52, had the ladies Highest Peg Out with Cec Hargraves (77) recording the highest for the men.

In tonight’s matches the Golfie Gophers will take on Empire Pirates, RSL Diggers meet Golfie Spearchuckers and Golfie Dartaholics are up against Empire Barflies.

The first round of the Captain’s Trophy competition was played on Sunday with Corin AhSee far too good for the other 14 players in the field. He won with a score of 67 net.

Stewart Fraser was in second place with a net score of 70.

The always consistent Max Phillips picked up third place with 71 net on a countback from Rob Cummins also with a 71 net. Greg Clark, with a 72 net, picked up 5th place.

Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by AhSee on the 3rd hole, Phillips on the 7th hole, Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence on the 8th hole, John Potter on the 11th hole and Stewart Fraser won the 15th hole.

This Saturday morning there will be a Working Bee on the course.

A Three Ball Classic will be played on Saturday afternoon (rules on notice board) and an Individual Stableford is set down for Sunday.

CHS’s rugby team beats Nyngan side The Cobar High School boys rugby league team hosted Nyngan in the Tom Kemp Rugby League Cup competition at Tom Knight Memorial Oval last Wednesday.

The Cobar side opened the scoring before Nyngan started to pile on the points and the visitors led by six points at the half time break.

Three unanswered second half tries by the Cobar boys put Cobar back in the lead and they finished as 28-18 winners.

Display of various bowls techniques Sunday’s social bowls games at the Golfie attracted a slightly smaller field this week with others off in Nyngan for their President’s Day event.

The winners at home were the doubles team of Tom Overend and David Thomas who finished with a big +16 win over Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod and veteran Doug Hudson (whose wrong bias in one game took out the neighbouring rink’s bowls!)

A newcomer to the sport, Scott Hilton, was welcomed to the greens and, while he bowled several wrong biases, it was noted he has an awesome bowling technique. Hilton’s team mates included Shane Carter and John Claus and their opponents were Jim Goonrey, Glenn Ratcliffe and Allan Gardoll who won their game by +13.

The Nyngan Bowls President’s Day was well attended with 18 triples teams from Nyngan, Trangie, Warren, Tottenham, Bourke, Coonamble, Peak Hill and Cobar in attendance.

Unfortunately rain put an end to the day’s event after only six ends of what should have been a full day of 32 ends.

The Cobar team of Kyle Roberts, Don Roberts and John ‘Shark’ Daly were declared winners ahead of the runners-up from Nyngan and Trangie.

Last Thursday’s social bowls game of triples at the Golfie finished in a +6 win for the team of Karen Daly, Marlene Wynd and Sandra Zazoniuk over David Thomas, Shine McIver and Barbara Barklimore.

Yabbies share the prizes around

The Yabbies shared the podium glory around at last week’s Senior Men’s Swimming Club competition swim with no one swimmer dominating the night.

Tyler Roberts was the first winner of the night when he finished within 0.13 seconds of his nominated time in the 30 metres freestyle handicapped event.

Just behind him was Chris Powell on 0.19 and Murray Harland finished in third place with 0.34 seconds off his time.

Harland raced home in the 50m swim to win with 0.06 seconds off his time leaving second place to John Claus (0.19) while third spot was filled by John Carswell (0.25).

Matt Harland claimed a win in the 100m swim with 0.15 seconds off his nominated time.

It was the best time by far with Bill Fugar back in second place on 2.38 and Powell was third with 2.53.

Lucas Hardy and Jason Toomey teamed up to win the Brace Relay novelty event finishing within 0.34 seconds of their combined nominated time.

Second place went to Paul Swainston and Murray Harland (0.91) and third place was filled by Claus and Powell on 1.37.

Golfers welcome interested learner players to join them Lady golfers conducted a ‘learners day’ on the Cobar course on Saturday but with a number of interested learners unavailable to attend, another learners day is scheduled to be held later in the year.

Glenda Peebles was the Stableford winner from Saturday’s game after finishing with 33 points.

A three-way countback was then needed to separate Barb Barklimore, Susan Goonrey and Ann Dunn after each scored 32 points.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Fay Hardwick for A Grade, Ann Dunn in B Grade and ‘learner’ Nadine McLeod picked up the C Grade pin.

Marlene Wynd had a comfortable win in last Wednesday’s Par round posting a score of -1.

Robynne Morton was the runner-up with -4 while Ann Dunn finished in third spot with 6.

Julie Livingston and Marlene Wynd were closest to the flag on the 7th hole.

The slight drizzle of rain on Sunday kept the dust down for the eight players taking part in the Vet’s Mabel McKenzie Brooch event.

The Division 1 winner from the day was Narelle Kriz, with Robynne Morton finishing out in front in Division 2 and Division 3 went to Ann Dunn.

The senior Vet winner on the day was Fay Hardwick.

A big hit in touch comp

Valiant effort by undermanned Cougars An undermanned Castlereagh Cougars Under 19s side put in a valiant effort in their Women’s Rugby League grand final game up against Woodbridge on Sunday in Bathurst.

The Cougars were short on numbers, including losing their captain, Cobar’s Hannah Carroll, during the match.

Carroll tried to play through the pain of a shoulder injury she’d sustained playing up in the Cougars Opens side semi final game last week however she had to retire early from the

grand final game on Sunday.

The team also had to make do with a few Under 17s girls to make up numbers.

Woodbridge however were too strong winning the grand final 56-6.

The Cougars were credited with having some of the best players in the competition, however being low on numbers in a few games, especially the grand final, let them down.

All of the Cougars players were praised for their dedication this season travelling hundreds of kilometres to play and train each week.

The Seniors division of the Junior Touch Football competition took a big hit with COVID affecting player numbers last Thursday however a number of juniors stepped up to fill in and ensure all the games went ahead.

In the Juniors division, The Big Pineapples finished as 10-9 winners last week over Red Rockets and Smurfs finished out in front, 8-6, over Rangas.

In the Seniors games, Blue Berries finished as 13-10 victors over Green Bwoins, while Yellow Bellies came out in front over Termites, also winning 13-10 in their match.
