Take a sneak peek at new TAFE Connected Learning Centre Cobar’s new state-of-the-art TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre (CLC) will now also include a new multi-trades workshop.

Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the investment in this first-class education facility is a major win for Cobar and

shows how the NSW Government is delivering for the region.

“I can confirm the next-generation CLC will be complemented by a new multi-trades workshop,” Mr Farraway said.

“This latest investment will extend the range of delivery available through the new

CLC, with integrated practical delivery from the dedicated trades workspace.

“And Cobar is the very first location to receive this game-changing extension to the CLC delivery model.

“The roll out of these new modern TAFE NSW facilities is testament to the NSW Government’s commitment to regional communities across the state.”

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the new multi-disciplinary trades workshop is a significant boost for training in Cobar and is specifically designed to operate cohesively with the new Connected Learning Centre.

“The multi-trades workshop will operate alongside the Connected Learning Centre to provide the best that vocational training has to offer in the local community,” Mr Lee said.

“The two new facilities will work in tandem to expand educational opportunities to students in the area – which means people can live and learn close to home.

“Importantly, the facilities will improve learning and job outcomes and provide students and employers with greater choice and better access when it comes to quality educaCobar’s proposed new TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre, to be constructed in tion and training.”

Donation for Cadets

The team that has led Cobar Shire Council for the past five years will continue for another term following the re-election last week of Cr Lilliane Brady as mayor and Cr Peter Abbott as deputy mayor.

Cr Brady was challenged by Cr Jarrod Marsden for the position of mayor however she defeated Cr Marsden six votes to four for the position.

As Cr Abbott was the only nominee for the deputy’s role, he was duly elected to the position without the need for councillors to vote.

Police investigate cow slaughter Cobar Police are investigating the shooting of a cow that occurred on a Lerida Road property last week.

The incident is reported to have taken place sometime on Friday or Saturday.

The animal was gutted at the scene and then removed.

After discovering the evidence, the landholder reported the matter to police.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have information about the incident or if they noticed anyone acting suspiciously on Friday or Saturday in the Lerida Road area.

Information can be reported to Cobar Police or to Crime Stoppers.

With regional shows being cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dubbo-based, family-owned, Monster Grill amusement group have been travelling around the western area putting on mini shows. They were in Cobar over the weekend to entertain local families with show rides, games and treats. Owners Peter Brown and Louise Wilson said they received great support from the community and showed their appreciation by donating their entry fees of just over $1,500 to the Cobar 221 Army Cadet Unit (Louise is pictured above with local cadets Amara and Riley Bottom). The Cadets have also been struggling to fundraise this year due to COVID restrictions and Monster Grill’s donation will help with their ongoing operational costs so the Cadets can continue to train and serve the community.

Researcher wants to know what we know about energy

University of Newcastle senior lecturer and researcher Dr Hedda Askland was in Cobar this week interviewing local people, businesses and community groups as part of her research for the Sustainable Energy Advocacy Coalition project.

Researcher and senior lecturer from the University of Newcastle Dr Hedda Askland was in Cobar on Monday to talk to locals about what they envision our energy sources would look like in the future.

Dr Askland heads up the Sustainable Energy Advocacy Coalition project which has been funded by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

“The project seeks to understand what ‘sustainable energy futures’ are proposed and supported in NSW,” Dr Askland told The Cobar Weekly.

“It is an open study that looks at various types of energy but we are really interested in how people relate to or think about different types of energy or how they see the future of energy and the energy mix.

“We are all consumers,” Dr Askland said.

“All of us are stakeholders in the future of our energy.

“A lot of research has already been done of particular energy sources and people support for example coal, or wind or solar or nuclear but not much has been looked at of how people see those energy technologies coming together.

“Ultimately what we are trying to do is to see what people think about this; what type of information do they get; what type of information do they think is important to receive in order to make decisions around this; who do they see as being the key decision makers and who are the key opinion leaders within differ-

ent communities; who are the people that essentially take the voices of the community to people that make decisions and vice versa, who are the people who inform the community but also become leaders or champions of particular types of energies.

“It’s wide raging in terms of us not limiting ourselves to one type of technology but we really try to look at this issue quite broadly.”

Dr Askland is keen to talk to people from all walks of the community and said people don’t need to have any technical experience to take part in the survey.

“We want to speak to everyday people,” she said.

Cr Yench ejected from meeting

Cr Peter Yench was ejected from last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting after he refused to apologise to Mayor Lilliane Brady for comments he had allegedly made at a previous meeting.

Cr Brady called for an apology from Cr Yench for remarks he made at Council’s July Ordinary Meeting about her and about Council being “a bullying society”.

“I don’t feel that the statement you just made was the truth,” Cr Yench said.

Cr Brady said that she had checked the video recording of the meeting.

Cr Brady again asked would Cr Yench “apologise without reservation” for what he had said. He refused and in accordance with clause 15.16 of Council’s Code of Meeting Practice, Cr Brady moved that Cr Yench be expelled from the meeting.

Cr Janine Lea-Barrett suggested that Cr Yench should view the video evidence before he be ejected or made to make an apology.

Cr Jarrod Marsden called for councillors to “please get on with the business of running this Council” and said he had had enough of the personal issues between Cr Brady and Cr Yench “detracting from our ability to be an effective Council”.

Cr Julie Payne agreed with Cr Marsden and said she believed that Councillors had failed to observe a number of Local Government meeting protocols and on numerous occasions various members had not adhered to the Model Code of Conduct.

Hospital management gives assurances Councillor calls on community to read Newey plan Western NSW Local Health District acting chief executive Mark Spittal has defended local health services in response to recent media attention on Dubbo and Cobar’s health services.

“When a person comes to one of our hospitals, they want to receive the best care, advice and support,” Mr Spittal said.

“I guarantee you that for all of us who work in health that’s exactly what we go to work every day wanting to deliver.

“In truth, the vast majority of people have a good experience with our hospitals and health services,” Mr Spittal said.

“They understand what’s happening, and why. They feel taken care of.”

Mr Spittal explained that over the past 10 years the Dubbo Health Service had grown in size and complexity and continues to grow.

He said the number of patients admitted to Dubbo Hospital had grown by 46 per cent; the

number of elective surgeries performed has increased by 38 per cent; and the numbers using the emergency department are up 122 per cent since 2011, including a 68 per cent rise in the more complex resuscitation and emergency categories.

Mr Spittal said in response to that, Dubbo Health Service’s budget had grown by 90 per cent to more than $125million.

Mr Spittal admits that they don’t always get it right.

“When that happens, we take it very seriously, I have an obligation to patient and staff confidentiality and can’t comment on specific cases no matter how much I might like to.”

This is the case for all health staff.

“I can assure you, though, that we are working with patients and families all the time to be open about their experiences, and to involve them in the process of making improvements,” Mr Spittal said.

Yench’s calls to stop work rejected Cr Peter Yench’s motion to put a halt on construction of the Ward Oval Community Hub was defeated at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Cr Yench called for no further action be taken on the Ward Oval Community Hub project until such time as Councillors were supplied with a full project costing and a five year business plan to decide on the affordability of running and usage costs for users groups.

He was concerned the hub could become a “white elephant” and a burden on council.

While Cr Yench’s motion was seconded by

Cr Julie Payne so that the matter could be debated at the meeting, Cr Payne, and the eight other councillors present at the meeting, did not support the motion and it was lost.

Cr Jarrod Marsden said he disagreed with the way the motion was worded.

“I don’t disagree that we should have a business plan for a council asset,“ he said.

Cr Marsden said a lot of the questions Cr Yench raised could be answered in a less formal environment of a workshop.

“I don’t think we should stop what we’re doing in the meantime as far as progressing this project,” he said.

Dear editor Finally the Plan Of Management (POM) regarding the Newey is released.

To my knowledge there has never been a Business Plan, forward costings, economic studies or survey results documented to support the decision to encourage Free Camping at the Newey.

Originally funding of this project was to be based on a grant application for $200k.

However funding for $300k has now been allocated in the budget courtesy of the ratepayers to implement the POM. Of course the “first bite of the cherry” will be spent on consultants, surveyors etc before any capital works or enhancements begin.

As seen in the plan, 13 designated parking bays for self contained Recreational Vehicles (RVs) have been proposed. Naturally in prime positions.

Council has advised they will not be policing this activity.

The current Centenary of Federation walking/cycling path appears to be relocated to the edge of the water (a waste of money in my opinion) to make way for the parking bays.

Users of the track will share with the proposed RV traffic flow.

Surely completion of an all weather track all the way around the Newey would have funds better spent.

There will also be removal of a significant amount of vegetation to create designated camping bays.

These are some of the reasons why I do not support Free Camping at the Newey.

Other issues concerning management of the Newey include safety, noise, views, privacy, vehicle access, rubbish, ongoing costs, loss of local ownership, services and utilities and water management.

You as the public control the outcome at the Newey so I urge any of you who care about the Newey’s future to have a look at the plan and put forward your submissions to Council’s General Manager expressing any concerns or ideas which may enhance this wonderful asset we have.

Locusts hatching Landholders are urged to be vigilant and look out for locusts following reports of recent hatchings in the south of the shire.

The locust population increased to medium density in the Cobar, Wilcannia and White Cliffs districts in April with Western Local Land Services (Western LLS) reporting high numbers of locusts near Cobar.

Western LLS Senior Biosecurity Officer and Emergency Management Coordinator Robynne Wells-Budd said there was evidence of locust eggs being laid in Autumn and now, with the onset of the warmer spring weather, they are starting to hatch.

“When the ground gets to around that 26 degree mark they start to hatch,” Ms WellsBudd explained.

“We have got hatchings south of Cobar down The Wool Track road and there will be more out there. The best time to get them is when they are still in the band, that’s when they are easiest to control.”

Model T Ford club visits Cobar on their outback jaunt A group of members of the Outback Model T Ford Club passed through Cobar on Friday on their jaunt through Western NSW. The four members and their partners/friends, who hail from Junee, Parkes, Goulburn and Wellington regularly travel around Australia in their early model cars.

This year they were to travel to Cape York in Queensland but had to change their plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After leaving Cobar they were headed to Trilby Station, Tilpa, Cultowa Station, Emmdale, Ivanhoe and Hillston camping along the way.

“We’re in no hurry,” club member Colin Macaulay from Junee told The Cobar Weekly.

And in their vintage vehicles, the oldest of the group dates back to 1915, they are definitely not in a hurry when their cars are powered by 20HP engines and their average cruising speed is only about 60km per hour!

“We can probably go out to 80 on a good, straight road,” Colin boasted.

“We like to have a good look at the scenery along the way.”

The strong, swirling winds on Friday on their drive up from Nyngan had proved to be “a bit hairy” as their cars only weigh between 800-900kg (even towing their camper trailers they are still lighter than an average modern car!).

Colin said they were all pleased to be able to stop in Cobar for lunch and to stock up on groceries.

He said all of the cars have their original engines, diffs and gearboxes.

They have however been rebuilt “with little tweaks here and there to make them more safer and reliable”.

Mayor pleased to be re-elected

On Thursday, the September Ordinary Council meeting was held.

It was pleasing to see Councillor Peter Abbott re-appointed as Deputy Mayor, as he has been a wonderful support to me and a wonderful friend.

On Monday, I was interviewed by ABC Radio Central Coast on Cobar.

We discussed how the community rallies together to fundraise and what a good town Cobar is.

Two close games Course is continuing to be difficult of netball played Two close games were played in Round 9 of the Cobar Senior Netball competition on Saturday with eight points the difference in one game and nine in another.

Pumpettes finished as eight points winners (40-32) over Hot Shots.

After getting off to a good start, Pumpettes had a four goals led by the first break however Hot Shots came back in the second quarter to wear down that lead to be just two points the difference at half time.

Pumpettes came out firing after half time and had pulled away to take a six points lead by three-quarter time.

They maintained that intensity going into the final quarter and held off Hot Shots to claim a 40-32 win.

Pumpettes’ best on court was BJ Townsend with Hot Shots well served by Emily Gough.

JKM beat Real Steel 36-27 in their close match.

Real Steel had a narrow 9-7 lead at the first break but JKM had a big second quarter outpointing Real Steel (10-4) with JKM up 17-13 at the halftime break.

JKM continued to call the shots winning the third quarter 9-6 before a late recovery by Real Steel saw them win the final quarter 9-8.

JKM however had done enough earlier in the match to finish with a nine point win.

Kym Sutton was best on court for JKM while Haylee Prince was a stand-out for her Real Steel side.

In the other Round 9 matches played on Saturday Divas had a big 71-20 win over Gumnuts and Sharpe Shooters defeated Mid Strength Merinos 52-17.

Mid Strength Merinos tally last week of 17 points was their highest scoring result of the season to date and they achieved it despite only having five players available for the game.

They were well served by Chloe Polack while Sarah-Jane Bottom was a stand-out player for Sharpe Shooters.

Divas’ best on court was Janette Booth while Gumnuts’ best player was Laura Barnes.

Teams will have a general bye this Saturday due to the long weekend.

The local golf course is continuing to prove difficult with the winning scores from the Ladies Golf competitions over the past week showing how tough the going was.

Fay Hardwick was the winner in last Wednesday’s Par game finishing the day on -3.

Sally Bannister was the runner-up with -6 on a countback from Daphne Cross.

The Marie McManus Memorial Day stableford attracted 17 players on Saturday.

Ann Dunn with 35 points finished as the winner with Ben McManus presenting the trophy on behalf of the McManus family.

Narelle Kriz took out second spot with 33 points followed by Jannine Wilkin in third place with 32.

Countbacks separated Geraldine Francisco and Daphne Cross (31 points each), Fay Hardwick and Marlene Wynd (30 each) while An-

gela Fryer scored 29.

Sunday’s Trophy Day winner was Julie Livingston. Livingston only needed 32 points to claim victory from the field of 16 players.

Fay Hardwick and Ann Dunn posted 31 points each; Daphne Cross and Marlene Wynd had 30 points apiece; and Di Greer finished the day with 29 points.

Geraldine Francisco will now play Barb Barklimore in the Match Play final after Francisco won her match against Jannine Wilkin on the 16th hole, to finish three up with two to play.

This week starts with a Stroke game today and a Stableford on Saturday.

After winding the clocks forward for the start of Daylight Savings, Sunday’s game is a two person Ambrose with a draw for partner.

The winner was the ever reliable Max Phillips with 35 points followed by Jarrod Starr with 34 points and back in third place was Peter ‘China’ Brien.

A good field of 22 players contested the 7th round of the Captain’s Trophy competition on Saturday. The winner was Jarrod Starr with a score of 71 net. He won on a countback from Bill Fugar and Max Phillips.

In 4th place was Scott Fitzgerald, a visitor from Warren, with a score of 72 net.

Roosters couldn’t contain Swans second half fight back Throughout the first half of the Christie & Hood sudden-death semi final First Grade game at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Sunday things were going according to plan for the Cobar Roosters.

The Roosters scored the first two tries of the match and were leading the Dunedoo Swans 18-14 at the half time break.

However their game plan fell to bits when the Roosters returned to the field in the second half and the Swans took control of the match to walk away with a 32-18 victory and claim a berth in the 2020 season grand final.

The Cobar side looked good right from the outset of Sunday’s game and were dealing with all of the heavy punishment the Swans’ defenders were handing out.

Following an early penalty which improved the Roosters’ field position, the Cobar side’s patience was rewarded when their powerful Forward Jack Govett forced his way over six minutes into the game to score first points.

When Jimmy Neyland then landed the long range conversion, the Roosters crowd were encouraged their side could produce a win.

Shortly after a breakaway run by Lock Loma Atuau had Cobar back on the attack and pressure and patience on the line paid off once again when Fullback Tim Hilliam spun out of a tackle and crossed out wide to score.

Nyland once again nailed the sideline conversion to give Cobar a 12-0 lead.

Just before the first drinks break, Dunedoo took advantage of a penalty on the half way mark and when the Roosters defence gave the Swans’ pacey Fullback Nathan Orr a bit too much room, he ran around them and scored out wide. The sideline conversion attempt was waved away and the margin was now 12-4.

After the break the Swans scored two back-to -back tries to take a 14-12 lead before the Roosters regrouped and Hooker Jarrad Whitty (who was heavily marked all game by the Swans’ defenders) touched down for a try.

Neyland kicked his third goal to put the Roosters back in front at 18-14.

The Roosters defenders foiled Dunedoo’s

attempt at a try just before half time to ensure the home side held on to their narrow four point psychological advantage when they went to the sheds at the long break.

That psychological advantage however seemed to work in Dunedoo’s favour and they fought back hard in the second half pounding the Roosters into submission.

Little A’s to fold?

The Cobar Little A’s athletics club is in danger of folding if a new committee is not soon elected.

Outgoing club president Tegan Gilbert said they have made two attempts to hold an annual general meeting and neither was very well attended.

“At the last meeting there was only Rebecca Everett [the vice president] and I,” Tegan said.

Tegan said a number of past committee members had left town or (like herself), were not able to commit to serving on the committee again this year.

Little A’s has always been a popular sport in Cobar. The club had 58 kids registered last season and 76 the year before.

“It would be a shame if Little A’s had to fold and quite a few kids will miss out on participating,” Tegan said.

“Little A’s is a good experience for kids, they get to try different events and learn the rules and regulations.

“It’s a social and fun experience.”

For the more serious and committed athletes, there’s also the opportunity of competing at Zone, Regional, State and National carnivals.

“We need at least five people for the committee and we hope they do come along to our third AGM on October 7 so the club doesn’t fold.”

Cobar’s attack also waned in the second half and they didn’t give themselves the opportunity to score as they had done in the first half.

With the Swans running in three unanswered tries, the clock was ticking down and with just six minutes to play, the Roosters needed three tries of their own to win, however Dundedoo held on to claim the 32-18 victory.

Bantam Roosters book grand final berth The Cobar Bantam Roosters were in sensational form for Sunday’s Castlereagh Rugby League Youth league elimination semi final and easily discarded their Gilgandra opposition from the competition with a 50-4 win.

Sunday’s semi final was the final hurdle for the young Roosters on their way to the 2020 grand final where they hope to defend their 2019 Premiership title.

Going into Sunday’s game, the score was one apiece with Gilgandra having defeated

Cobar 16-12 when they hosted them in the opening round of the competition on July 18 but Cobar came out on top in Round 6 on August 22 finishing with a big 48-10 win at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The Roosters were in a hurry to stamp their dominance on Sunday’s semi final game and the match was barely a few minutes old when Jacob Christie ran in his first try which was converted by Lochlan Ford.

Christie ran in two more tries during the Roosters win while Ford contributed another

12 points to their tally with another six conversions. (He only missed two long range shots in the whole game.)

While both sides had an equal share of possession in the first quarter, the Gilgandra visitors were unable to penetrate their try line as the Roosters showed great commitment in defence.

The Roosters went to the first break with a 6-0 lead and it wasn’t until midway through the second stanza that Gilgandra’s secondrower Ty Sutherland scored out wide after persistent attack on their try line.

The attempt at the long range conversion was waved away and the score was now 6-4.

Christie however changed that with a midfield break to race away and score his second try under the posts to make for an easy conversion for Ford.

Shortly after star fullback Ash Davies crossed untouched and ran around to score under the posts to make for another simple conversion for Ford which he kicked just after the half time siren.

The Roosters went to the sheds with an 18-4 lead.

It was all one-way traffic with the Roosters shifting into fourth gear for the remainder of the game.

Immediately after the re-start Davies crossed out wide and ran around and could have scored under the posts but chose to pass the ball off to Tyler Coughlan in support.

Coughlan put the ball down to record his first try for the season.

Ford’s conversion put Cobar ahead 24-4.

Soon after Coughlan swivelled out of a tackle and forced his way over to score back-toback tries (which Ford again converted).

Full of confidence, Coughlan looked unstoppable near the line and he had a hand in setting up the next try when he slipped through the defence and slipped the ball out to his centre Jacob Christie on his way to the line on Sunday to score the second of his three tries in Riley Porter in support who scored in the corthe Roosters’ 50-4 semi final win over Gilgandra. ner.
