Eight people charged in police raids An aerial search Eight people, including four Cobar men, have been charged with drug and rural crime offences in a joint operation in the Cobar/Hillston area.

In May 2021, detectives from NSW Police Central North Police District Criminal Investigation Team established Strike Force Greeve to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs and rural crime-related offences in the Cobar and surrounding areas.

Strike Force Gunbower was subsequently established by Murrumbidgee Police District in December last year, to carry out investigations in the Hillston area regarding the alleged supply of prohibited drugs (methylamphetamine and cannabis).

Investigators from Central North and Murrumbidgee then combined forces to investigate alleged rural crime offences – in particular, the theft and illegal sale of goats, as well as drug supply and the unlawful sale of firearms – occurring on the border of the two police districts.

Simultaneous search warrants at properties in Cobar, Hillston and Mount Hope were carried out last Thursday which resulted in the arrest of eight people.

At four properties in Cobar, officers seized methylamphetamine, cannabis plants, cannabis leaf, prescription medication, drug paraphernalia, property suspected of being stolen and liquid believed to be GHB. A 36-year-old Cobar man was charged with 12 counts of supply prohibited drug, six counts take part supply prohibited drug, eight counts of deal with property proceeds of crime, five counts of supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, larceny, damage property by fire/ explosion, two counts of possess prohibited drug, cultivate prohibited plant, and knowingly

direct activities of a criminal group.

A second Cobar man, aged 36, was charged with take part/supply prohibited drug.

A 39-year-old Cobar man was charged with four counts of supply prohibited drug, deal with property proceeds of crime and possess prohibited drug. All three were refused bail to appear at Bourke Local Court last Friday.

A 50-year-old Cobar man was also charged and will appear at Cobar Local Court in May. He was charged with participate criminal group/contribute criminal activity, take part/ supply prohibited drug, two counts of supply prohibited drug, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, possess prohibited drug and cultivate prohibited plant.

At a Hillston property, officers seized methylamphetamine, cannabis, ammunition, and more than $7,000 cash.

A 57-year-old Hillston man was charged with 11 drug and firearm offences and appeared at Griffith Local Court last Friday where he was formally denied bail and will reappear in May. A 38-year-old Hillston woman was charged with supply prohibited drug (knowingly take part) and granted bail to appear in Griffith Local Court in June.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man at a second Hillston property who was charged with supply firearm to person unauthorised to possess it.

(It’s alleged the man facilitated the supply of four pistols.) He was granted bail to appear in Griffith Local Court in May. His firearms licence was also suspended.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at a property at Mount Hope and was charged with participate criminal group/contribute criminal activity, and two counts of recklessly deal with proceeds of crime.

NSW Central North Police District and Murrumbidgee Police District officers investigating the supply of prohibited drugs and crime-related offences, found 700 goats in an aerial search last Wednesday.

A PolAir helicopter was used to search an area covering 120,000 acres across Bundure, and Kidman Way at Mount Hope, Illawong and Landervale.

They located approximately 700 goats, which police will allege were unlawfully obtained.

Among the herd, police identified Boer goats, which are domestically bred.

The goats were seized and if owners can be identified, they will be returned to them.

Detective Inspector Eugene Stek said rural crime in NSW is a significant issue and has a huge economic impact.

“It’s costing millions – not only in the theft of stock, but through the theft of other farming equipment, fuel and machinery, damaged fences, loss of income and it also introduces biosecurity risks.” Det Insp Stek said.

“What police will allege occurred here is that the goats were stolen from several properties and sold illegally. Those who we allege are involved, believed they were operating undetected,” Det Insp Stek said.

“Western and Southern Region removed the district boundaries to work together to disrupt and take down this alleged syndicate.

“Farmers are the backbone of our country; this joint resolution shows that police will come at rural crime and drug offenders from all angles, and deal with them under the full force of the law.”

Neale calls for Darwin attack to be remembered

RSL Sub Branch Cobar president Kain Neale led the Anzac Day service in Cobar on Monday and vowed that all the sacrifices and events of war will not be forgotten

by Australians.

Mr Neale welcomed returned servicemen and women, those who had a family member who served in the forces or were there representing emergency services, local clubs or local schools and members of the community to Monday’s service in Drummond Park.

“Whilst we all may be from different backgrounds, what we share as we gather here today—our understanding about how all this matters, why this cenotaph matters, why we think it is important to continue to honour their sacrifice so that we can live freely today—is what is important,” Mr Neale said.

He said while many national Anzac Day ceremonies this year are taking time to commemorate a number of important anniversaries in Australia’s military history, one very important event was however being overlooked, the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin.

“Two air raids killed at least 243 Australians on Australian soil and 300-400 were wounded,” Mr Neale described the attack on Darwin in February 1942.

“The first attack lasted about 40 minutes and the second 20-25 minutes; 461 bombs and torpedoes were launched in Pearl Harbor, 681 were dopped in Darwin.

“The attacks were the first on the Australian mainland and signaled a new and sometimes desperate stage of the war,” he said.

“If Australia had not stood beside the US and prevailed in New Guinea, it may well have ended with a Japanese invasion.”

Mr Neale said at the time the Australian Government censored the information given to the mainstream media and the public about the attack.

“It would be an outrage to forget it again now,” Mr Neale said.

Charity day raises over $30,000

Cobar Roosters Rugby League Club committee members Tia Turner, Mollie Harley and Chris Deighton with the signed football jerseys, boots and a football that went under the hammer at a charity auction on Saturday night. The auction raised $19,100 and, along with the proceeds from raffles, a 100 Club, the bar and barbecue, the day raised more than $30,000. Deighton said they are just awaiting a couple of invoices to finalise it all and then the profits will be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Two more candidates for Parkes A total of nine candidates have now nominated for the Seat of Parkes with two more nominations coming in before the House of Representative division was formally declared at noon last Friday.

Derek Hardman from the Indigenous— Aboriginal Party of Australia was a new nomination and secured the No 1 position after a random ballot draw also took place on Friday.

Peter Rothwell (Liberal Democrats) scored No 2 on the ballot paper draw, Deborah Swin-

bourn, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate (the other new nomination) was drawn out as No 3.

Incumbent Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton (Nationals) was drawn out at No 4 and United Australia Party’s Petrus Van Der Steen is No 5.

Independent Stuart Howe was drawn out at No 6, Labor’s Jack Ayoub received No 7, Green’s Trish Frail got the No 8 spot and Medical Options Party candidate, Benjamin Fox was last candidate to be drawn out at No 9.

Community and visitors combine for a special Anzac service Australian Navy Commodore Ray Leggatt joined the local community to commemorate Anzac Day this year.

After leading the street march on Monday, Commodore Leggatt was invited to give an address at the service that followed in Drummond Park.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War and the service and sacrifice on the Gallipoli peninsula and on the Western Front over a century ago and should not be forgotten.

Commodore Leggatt said we should also look at other more recent events that happened closer to home.

He said many events in World War II are more significant to Australia, as the conflict was not just happening on the other side of the world, but it was also occurring in and around our country.

Commodore Leggatt said when Australians and New Zealanders gathered together 80 years ago to mark Anzac Day in 1942, our nation was then facing the most direct threat in their history.

“A terrible war was being raised and it was on our doorstep,” he said.

The months proceeding April 1942 were even more awful with defeats in Greece and Crete, the Siege of Tobruk, the sinking of Australian warships, Parramatta, Waterhen, and later HMAS Sydney and then Japan entered the war with attacks in South East Asia and the Pacific.

In December 1941 there were defeats at Pearl Harbor and in the South China Sea and the new year 1942, brought worse news.

“Most shocking of all, was the fall of Singapore in early February and the surrender of the Australian 8th division followed by a frantic retreat south and west, defeats in the Java Sea and the Sulu Strait where Dutch, British, US and Australian ships were sunk, HMAS Perth and USS Houston in Sulu Strait and HMAS Yarra south of Java defending fleeing convoys.

“Darwin was bombed for the first time in February 1942, and in April HMAS Vampire was sunk in action defending a small British aircraft carrier, Hermes, off Sri Lanka.”

He said with the advance of the Japanese, the defence of Australia became “a desperate maritime campaign put forward by a coalition of nations by soldiers, sailors and aviators in the waters and islands to our north, around our coast, by sea, land and air.

“On Anzac Day in April 1942 the defence of Australia was at its darkest hour.

“The usual turning points of the war in the Indo-Pacific—the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal—only took place in May 1942.”

Commodore Leggatt said the character of those who served us 80 years ago, in the darkest days leading up to April 1942, should be what inspires us in the future.

“Co-operation in the face of adversity, courage to engage against an enemy seemingly without weakness, determination to learn to overcome and to succeed.

“Their service in the direct defence of Australia reminds us what really matters.

“Their service guides us to that which is best in ourselves, encourages us that we can prevail for the greater good and inspires us to go on to better and brighter things.

“Lest we forget.”

Constable David Bates raised the flag and Cobar historian John Collins, who has a family connection to Nymagee, was invited to give this year’s Anzac Day address.

“It is important, now more than ever that we celebrate Anzac Day and that we recognise the sacrifice that young men and women have paid in all theatres of war over the last 120 years,” John said in his address.

“In many cases the supreme sacrifice was paid. Many returned and went on to lead normal lives, but also there were many who found it difficult to resume a normal life after and they also became casualties of war.

“So we owe it to these brave men and women to never let it be forgotten, and Anzac Day is our way of remembering and never forgetting.”

John said it was good to see that Anzac Day events were getting bigger each year and ensuring those who had made sacrifices in wars would not be forgotten.

In his address he painted a picture of what Nymagee looked like when World War I broke out in Europe in 1914.

“Nymagee was still a bustling town of approximately 2,000 people,” he said.

He said a lot of young men and women enlisted to serve and fight from country towns just like Nymagee.

“Some were only in their teens or early 20s.

“The Honour Roll in the Nymagee Hall shows the names of many who enlisted during the first and second world wars.

“However those few names mentioned on our Honour Roll are just a fraction of the men and women who enlisted and had connections with Nymagee,” John said.

“The number runs into the hundreds in both wars and they all have a story to tell.”

Council to discuss swimming pool plan Two community transport options News

Cobar Shire Councillors will discuss a concept design and business case study for the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool at today’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Under the Resources for Regions funding (Round 7 and 8), council had allocated funding to produce a Masterplan and business case study for the proposed upgrade to the pool.

Council contracted the Facility Design Group to prepare the original concept plan which was taken to a number of community consultation meetings for feedback.

Based on that feedback, two concept options have been prepared for council to consider.

The first option addresses the core issues with the entry, kiosk, amenities and staff facilities and has been costed at $2,294,457.

The second option includes a potential Stage 2 and allows for the addition of an indoor

multipurpose pool.

Option 2’s estimated capital cost is $9,929,467.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko said in his report to council on the matter that it was council’s intention that the project be ‘shovel ready’ for the next opportunity for grant funding and to also let the community know what is planned for the pool complex.

“In consideration of the options, it is clear for the residents of Cobar, Option 2 in terms of its operational costs is significant and would create long-term budget stress,” Mr Vlatko said.

“In conclusion it is recognised that Option 2 is desirable but it is not affordable given our rate revenue and current population trends.”

Mr Vlatko recommended that councillors chose Option 1 which would “ provide a first class facility” at an affordable cost.

Mayor Abbott comes out swinging Cobar Shire Council Mayor Peter Abbott didn’t take a traditional approach in his Anzac Day address at Drummond Park on Monday.

Cr Abbott instead used the forum to denounce those who have taken much of our freedoms, that the freedom that men and women fought and died for during the two world wars and numerous conflicts since.

“Few if any would be happy with what they see today. I know my forbears would not.”

Cr Abbott listed a number of freedom robbing occurrences including the assassination of US President John F Kennedy, the Port Arthur massacre (which he said served to disarm the population), and the September 11 attacks (which brought increased airport security).

“Each and every one of these items has resulted in yet more erosion of our basic human rights,” he said and warned the impending removal of cash and other “central control” measures were not in our best interests.

For some time Cobar was without a community transport service that could help Cobar residents attend specialist medical appointments in Dubbo and Bourke.

Now it appears we have two providers of community transport which has created some confusion in the community.

The matter was raised for discussion at yesterday’s Cobar Community Services Forum in an effort to clarify each provider’s role and clear up the confusion as to what each service does and doesn’t provide and who can use each service.

Australian Unity reinstated a community transport service in Cobar in January 2021 with funding provided through the Commonwealth Home Support Program and the NSW Government’s Community Transport Program. They provided Cobar with a 10 seater bus and employed a local driver. The service operated three days a week. It however folded a few months later but was re-commenced by Australian Unity earlier this year.

The meeting was advised yesterday that the contract for the delivery of Community Transport services in Cobar transitioned from Australian Unity Ltd to LiveBetter Community Services in January this year.

LiveBetter advised the meeting they have been providing a five day a week service since January for any residents who are transport disadvantaged.

Cadet leader was VIEW’s speaker

Cobar VIEW Club held their monthly meeting last week and their April meetings are traditionally centred around Anzac Day (and all those who have been and still are involved in the Australian Defence Forces).

RSL Sub Branch Cobar member and Cobar Cadet 221 leader, Colleen Boucher was the guest speaker at last week’s meeting and outlined some interesting facts about ANZAC traditions.

Mrs Boucher spoke about the significance of rosemary, which grows wild on the Mediterranean shores and was brought home by a wounded digger from Gallipoli and also of the Last Post that ends the soldiers’ day.

VIEW members also learnt the Ode of Remembrance is the fourth stanza of a poem by English writer, Laurence Binyon, called ‘For the Fallen’ and the guard of honour around the cenotaph when service personnel stand with reversed weapons, is called the Catafalque Party.

The Gunfire Breakfast, hosted by some RSL Sub Branches, harks back to the liquid measure issued to troops to give courage for the upcoming day’s battles.

The Anzac biscuit, or what was originally known as the Soldier’s biscuit, was made by wives and women’s groups from ingredients designed to survive the trip over to the troops and still remain edible!

During the meeting family mementos and stories from World War I and II, and Afghanistan conflicts were also shared with the meeting’s lunch of an Aussie Cottage pie, a berry pie and custard served on enamel plates, topping off the themed event.

Former VIEW Club member, Sr Patricia Vagg’s passing was honoured by a minute’s silence. Sr Trish had been a good friend to many and actively supported the club’s work with The Smith Family during her time in Cobar.

Members agreed to continue the club’s involvement in The Smith Family ‘Learning for Life’ program, with monetary contributions going towards essential school requisites, after school assistance and personal mentorships for two primary school aged and one secondary student.

Cobar VIEW Club’s fundraising efforts are directed towards this worthwhile initiative.

Council to take over the ROEF A plan for Cobar Shire Council to take over the running of the Running On Empty Festival (ROEF) is to be discussed at tonight’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

The first ROEF was organised by a community committee in September 2018 and proved to be very successful.

Following on from that success and, coupled with a strong demand by many who attended, it was proposed the festival would become an annual or biennial event. Uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic delayed the second festival to September 2022.

Planning for this year’s event is already well and truly underway by a committee of volunteers headed up by John de Bruin.

In a presentation Mr de Bruin made to Council in 2020 about the festival, he also made an informal request that Cobar Shire Council take over the future running of the festival.

Mr de Bruin said this would ensure that there is appropriate transparency with all accounting for ROEF and, in particular, that the appropriate funds are assigned to the development of the War Memorial in Drummond Park.

In his report for today’s meeting, council’s director of finance and community services, Kym Miller, recommended council transition into bringing the festival in under council’s banner.

“This would also allow the strength of council’s resources to support the event as well as ensuring its future,” Mr Miller said.

“The Parkes Elvis Festival has been of a similar nature and is now a council event.”

Cr Kain Neale and council’s tourism manager Demi Smith are both members of the current committee.

Holiday fun comes to an end

With schools going back this week, it signaled the end of the school holidays and the end of Cobar Shire Council’s school holiday activities. Making the most of the last day of the holidays on Friday at the Cobar Shire Library were Ember McDonald, Queena Jieng and Dayna Armstrong who had some ‘Foodie Fun’ decorating biscuits under the guidance of library staff member Joanne Miller. Last week the library also offered Hama beads workshops and made roll-up pencil cases and pencil holders for kids aged 5+ years.

Local kids get to go to skate school in school holidays There’s not too many kids who would put their hands up to go to school during the school holidays, however when it’s a skate school, there’s always plenty of takers!

The crew from Totem Skateboarding were in Cobar last Friday and partnered with Cobar

Shire Council to offer a Community Skate Workshop.

They offered free newcomer, beginner and intermediate workshops along with a self expression jam session and finished up with a demo session with community interaction.

Since 2010, Totem has grown to become the largest and longest running skate event company in Australia.

They have paved the way in designing and facilitating free (Local Government and State Government funded) community development sessions across Australia.

The Totem Skateboarding philosophy encourages skate students to go at their own pace under the guidance of their coaches.

By combining the physical and creative elements of skateboarding, Totem gives students the opportunity to try out and practice a wide and unique variety of skills to build selfesteem in a fun, safe and supported environment.

CSA Mine is looking for an experienced Shaft Driller (Vent Rise Operator) to join the team. You will work in a team that is focused on safety, while driving to meet the plan. You will work in one of the world’s most iconic mining districts, which has the second highest grade copper mine in the country.

About the role

The successful applicant will have:

• Permanent full-time position • 7/7 continuous shift • Residential status however FIFO / DIDO will be considered

• Experience working in underground mining • Efficient operation of equipment including concrete pumps,

for applicants with extensive experience • Career progression opportunities • Competitive remuneration and quarterly bonus incentives • 12 Weeks Free Transit Accommodation followed by residential allowance for residential status

Youth & Community Development Coordinator The Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre was closed in 2020 due to the covid restrictions imposed by the Public Health Order at that time. That forced closure period eventually lead into the commencement of the construction project that is set to completely transform the centre inside and out, with the newly renovated facility expected to be officially open for business in August 2022.

Affectionately known as the "Youthie" to locals, the upcoming re-opening has presented the opportunity for a Youth & Community Development Coordinator to join our team in June 2022.

Big day of rugby union

Cobar Camels Rugby Union player Travis Schintler (at right) lined up with the West Western Plains team (with players from Bourke, Nyngan, Brewarrina and Warren) to take on the East Western Plains (Coonamble, Walgett and Gulargambone) on Saturday as part of the Western Plains Rugby Union and Classic Wallabies (the alumni of all Wallabies that have retired from the game) in a big day at Coonamble.

It was another big weekend of golf in lead up to Open It was yet again another big weekend in the Men’s Golf competition with games played over the three days of the long weekend.

On Saturday the second round of the Captain’s Trophy was played, and Corin Ah-See finished as the winner on a countback from Bill Fugar after both had a 71 net score.

Golf Captain Alec Fraser was in third place with 72 net.

Newcomer to the men’s competition Brandt Pattinson had 67 net off a provisional handicap of 18.

Nearest to the Pins (NTPs) prizes were won

by Greg Clark on the 3rd hole and Bill Fugar on both the 7th and 8th holes.

For Anzac Day’s Stableford competition Garry Wilkin was showing good form ahead of the Epiroc sponsored Cobar Open this weekend.

Wilkin’s 36 stableford points was a two over par off the stick.

A three-way countback was required to separate the minor placings with Mark Fraser claiming second place, Geoff Dunne was third and Stewart Fraser finished in 4th place.

NTPs were won by Scott Mayne on the 8th hole and Max Phillips on the 15th hole.

This Saturday the Herford Cup Four-BallBest-Ball versus Par event will be played.

New season, new game day and new teams for netball comp The Nymagee Magpies and Pumpettes were the first to take the court in the new season of Cobar Netball Association’s Senior Ladies 2022 competition on Tuesday.

Pumpettes finished as eventual 47-33 winners but it was a see-saw game to start with as players settled back into, what has been for some, a break of close to eight months away from the court.

Pumpettes led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and a big second quarter effort had them up 21-13 at half time.

The Magpies fought back to win the third quarter 12-10, but a big finish by Pumpettes saw them through to a 14 point win.

In the late game, Real Steel played JKM Dynamic Fitness and they had to finish their match in the rain.

JKM got off to a confident start and were up six goals at the end of the first quarter.

The game then flipped and Real Steel took control of the next two quarters as wet conditions slowed the scoring.

JKM fought back strongly in the final quarter to finish with a 25-22 win.

Ay-Jays Café forfeited their match to Divas.

Four minutes later the Panthers crossed and the conversion by Shian Chatfield improved their lead to 12-4.

Dunn and Mayne win Nutrien Russell Stableford games Nutrien Russell sponsored both the men’s and ladies golf Stableford competitions on Sunday with Ann Dunn finishing as the ladies winner while Scott Mayne came out on top in the men’s competition.

The ladies game attracted 16 competitors and resulted in a close finish.

Dunn had 37 points to claim the win with Marlene Wynd the runner-up, just behind with 36.

Then followed Sue Phillips (35), Narelle Kriz and Susan Goonrey (34 each), Sally Bannister (32), Barb Barklimore (31) and Karen Manns on 30.

Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd hole were Fay Hardwick, Sue Phillips and Pat Polack while on the 15th hole Narelle Kriz, Karen Manns and Reina Cross were closest to the flag.

The men’s event attracted 22 players with in-form Mayne the winner with 42 stableford points.

Will Brown finished in second place with 40 stableford points.

A countback was then required to separate Jason Hampel in third place and Geoff Dunne in 4th place, after both finished with 39 stableford points.

Geoff Rorke finished in 5th place with 37.

With both teams looking dangerous each time they hit their respective try lines, it was the Panthers who looked set to score next in another attacking raid.

An intercept by Roosters handy centre, Tim Hillam, thwarted that attempt and possession was returned to the Roosters.

Shortly after they improved their lead when Atuau scored his second try.

Atuau’s powerful run through multiple Gilgandra defenders saw him again score under the posts.

Another easy conversion for Plater on the half time siren had Cobar to go to the break with an 18-10 lead.

The Roosters got off to a poor start in the second half immediately handing the Panthers possession after the ball was dropped.

After more errors, the Roosters spent two

more sets defending before the referee’s whistle started blowing in their favour.

Rooters’ halfback (and the 2021 Castlereagh Player of the Year), Plater made the most of the retreating disheveled Panthers defence and looked to go right.

The defence went with him but Plater quickly weaved back left to score next to the posts.

His successful conversion, his 4th for the game, put the Roosters ahead 24-10.

Gilgandra narrowed the gap to 24-14 soon after when Towney scored his second try of the game after pouncing on a grubber kick over the line.

Possession see-sawed with penalties and errors and the Panthers were again knocking on the door on the Roosters’ line however they did not penetrate.

Cobar looked like scoring again after a breakaway run by winger Ben Griffiths, who was caught 20 metres out. Plater looked like sensationally finishing off Griffths’ effort with a try however referee Ben Trudgett ruled it a ‘no try’.

With 10 minutes left to play and Gilgrandra’s fitness waning, Gerald Mackay pushed over for the Roosters and gave Plater another easy conversion in front.

Taking advantage of two Panthers players tending to cramps, Watson scored his second try in the dying stages of the match.

Hitting the line, he looked to his wing but decided the easiest option was to score himself.

Plater’s final attempt at goal, his first from out wide, was the only one he missed in the game and Cobar finished with a 34-14 win.

Atuau and Hillam shared the referee’s Best & Fairest points in the game along with Gilgandra’s Towney.

Cobar Best & Fairest points went to Jed Noonan, Plater and Zane Taylor.

The Cobar Roosters will have a bye for Round 2 this week with the Binnaway club not able to field a First Grade side this season.

The Coonabarabran Unicorns will also not be Cobar Roosters’ Best & Fairest player from Saturday’s game, Jed Noonan forcefully fielding a First Grade team this season which resisting the Panthers defenders efforts to tackle him. will leave eight teams in the 2022 competition.

Roosters 2022 season is off to a fine start The Cobar Roosters started off the 2022 Castlereagh Rugby League season in the same fashion as they finished last year, in fine form, beating the visiting Gilgandra Panthers 34-14.

The Roosters’ opening round game on Saturday afternoon in front of a home crowd at Tom Knight Memorial Oval was a charity fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service with the club raising more than $30,000.

It was a warm 24 degrees when the main game kicked off and it wasn’t until mid-way through the second half that a cooling breeze blowing across the field brought some relief for the players.

Despite the Roosters leading from start to finish, Saturday’s match was a hard fought one with both sides guilty of numerous ball handling errors.

In a post game interview, Roosters captain/ coach Loma Atuau admitted it had been a “scrappy game’.

“It was the first game of the season, it can only get better from here on in,” Atuau said.

And while both teams at times had trouble hanging on to the ball, it was the Roosters’ superior level of fitness that saw them through to their 20 point win in the end.

“The back line worked really well together, and that comes on the back of our forwards going forward,” Atuau said.

“Our forward pack has always been big and leading up front trying to dominate their forwards—obviously everything’s going to play off the back of that.”

And it did with the Roosters’ big, mobile forwards scoring five of their six tries in Saturday’s game.

Captain/coach Atuau opened the Roosters’ account 10 minutes into the game scoring their first points under the posts, which made for an easy conversion for Thomas Plater to put the Roosters up 6-0.

Gilgandra replied five minutes later with a converted try of their own to level the scores.

Shortly after David Watson muscled his way over for a try and Plater’s conversion gave Cobar back the ascendency at 12-6.

A ball handling error by the Roosters from the re-start put the Panthers within striking distance of the try line.
