Cobar comes to life with weekend events

Narromine-based jockey Ricky Blewitt rode a winning treble at the Cobar Picnic Races on Saturday, the first of which was on Rebecca’s Quest finishing 1.5 lengths ahead of Scarpa in Race 2, the 1,000 metres Cynend Building & Construction Class B Handicap. It was the Cobar Miners Race Club’s second race meeting this year since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced and their first event where they were permitted to host a limited crowd. ABC Television’s Back Roads host Heather Ewart and her crew were also at the race meeting to interview Mayor Lilliane Brady, who is a horse racing enthusiast, and to get some extra footage for their feature on life in Cobar. Despite the bitterly cold weather, good crowds were also recorded on Saturday at the local rugby league and rugby union games.

Festival plans canned due to COVID-19 Charges laid over string of local break and enters

Cobar’s annual Festival of the Miners Ghost (FOMG) is still more than two months away, however organisers have already made the decision to cancel this year’s event.

Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith said the decision was made last week as the future looks uncertain due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“It was important that we be proactive with this decision and call it now rather than later even though the festival weekend isn’t until the end of October,” Demi told The Cobar Weekly.

“I believe this decision is the best and most responsible decision as it is very uncertain what we still will be facing come October with

the current pandemic and the restrictions regarding mass crowd gatherings.”

Demi said it was disappointing.

“Originally at the beginning of the year this would have been the biggest weekend on the calendar for Cobar with the FOMG and Back to Cobar reunion weekend celebrating 150 Years of Cobar.

“However the most important thing right now is that we abide by the restrictions, be responsible with our actions and keep our community and our surrounding communities safe and, fingers crossed, COVID-19 free.”

Demi said the committee will now reevaluate and she expects they will come back with bigger and better events and festivals in 2021.

Council to adopt a new conduct code Cobar Shire Councillors will be asked to adopt a new Model Code of Conduct Policy at tomorrow’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

Councillors, administrators, members of staff, independent conduct reviewers and members of council committees including delegates of the council must comply with the code in carrying out their functions as Council

officials.

Other matters to be discussed on tomorrow’s agenda include rehabilitation issues regarding the Louth Road Landfill; the donation of an industrial bin to the Cobar Rugby Union Club; the Road Capital and Maintenance Works Program; variations to the 2020/2021 Budget Estimate and an update on grant funding.

A man has been charged with nine offences following an investigation into multiple break and enters.

In May 2020, detectives attached to Central North Police District established Strike Force Lochlomond to investigate four break and enters in the Cobar area.

Police allege the offences occurred between August 2019 and March 2020.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 20-year-old man at a Brough Street residence last Wednesday at about 12.30pm.

The man was taken to Cobar Police Station and charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter in company, two counts of break and enter, supply stolen firearm, possess ammunition, possess unauthorised pistol, not keep firearm safely, and handle firearm under the influence of a drug.

He was bail refused to appear before Bourke Local Court last Thursday.

Central North Police District Commander, Superintendent Andrew Hurst, said the arrest serves as a reminder to anyone thinking of engaging in criminal activity.

“This arrest comes after some fantastic work by detectives in locating the man we allege is responsible for a number of significant offences,” Superintendent Hurst said.

“This doubles as a reminder to the public to make sure homes are locked and secured, security systems are installed and activated, cars are locked and to conduct responsible firearm ownership.

“We rely on the public to report suspicious behaviour, and to report any property that has been stolen so we can investigate appropriately.”

Freezing weather

Cobar shivered through a freezing weekend with an icy wind and cloudy conditions keeping temperatures down.

Saturday was the coldest, only reaching a top of 13.6 degrees after 0.8mm of rain overnight.

Sunday was also chilly with 3.8 degrees overnight before a top of 14.3, while Monday only managed to climb to a top of 15 after a cool two degrees overnight.

Temperatures this weekend will be a stark contrast to last weekend’s freezing weather, forecast to climb above 20 degrees.

Sunny conditions are predicted all week although there is expected to be some cool mornings.

A top of 17 is predicted today while tomorrow should drop to a low of two before warming up to 19 degrees.

Friday is predicted to have a low of five and a top of 22 degrees, before a fine and sunny weekend.

Saturday should reach a top of 23 and Sunday is expected to record 24 degrees, while 21 is the forecast for Monday.

Mayor pleased to see local events On Saturday, I attended the Cobar Picnic Races where there was a small crowd, and I am guessing this is due to the cold and windy weather (it was 13 degrees, but felt like 5 degrees), but it was good day had by all.

Whilst driving to the races we noticed that there was a big crowd at the Rugby League, I was also advised that Rugby Union played on Saturday too.

ABC Television Back Roads host Heather Ewart and her crew arrived in Cobar on Tuesday evening and they have been very busy filming the locals in town.

They had a mine tour, visited Mount Grenfell and visited a local property, and were here to see what it was like to live in a mining town. They were very impressed with the people of Cobar.

There is a Council Meeting on tomorrow evening. Meetings are still closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions but are livestreamed for the public to watch.

It rained this week and if the rain keeps up it will keep everything green.

The crew from ABC Back Roads television show have been in Cobar over the past week getting to know the locals. They met up with the Dust Bowl Fuel Burners car club on Saturday morning and interviewed John de Bruin about the next Running on Empty Festival planned for 2022. The crew also spoke to Mayor Lilliane Brady at the races, Junior Roosters club president Simone Knight and other local characters including Colby Lawrence and Barry Knight to get a feel for the town.

Local photographer shortlisted in prestigious competition A photo of a bullrider taken at last year’s Cobar Rodeo by local photographer Klae McGuinness has finished in the top 30 in the Mono Awards, a prestigious Australia and New Zealand Black and White photo competition.

While Klae’s rodeo photo hasn’t won him any prizes, it will be part of the Mono Nation-

al Gallery tour and give him a bit more exposure.

“Black and white is not really my thing,” Klae admitted to The Cobar Weekly.

“But in saying that, I’ve got nothing against it.”

Klae said he just prefers colour.

“We see in colour, colour is very dramatic

especially out here in the bush.

“But in a way black and white tends to take distractions out, you don’t have colours in the background grabbing your eye and you tend to focus on the subject more.

“It’s all about the tones and contrast that make up a good black and white photo,” he said.

“I think the appeal of black and white is the timelessness of it—this photo could have been taken last year or 50 years ago.”

Klae said it took a bit of procrastinating to pick which one of his photos to enter.

“I noticed that a photo taken at a rodeo had finished in the top 10 last year and I thought I’ve got some that are as good as that.

“I like this sort of stuff because it’s not easy,” Klae said about shooting photos at the rodeo.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen, which way the bull’s going etc, it’s all about camera control.”

While it is a great photo in colour, after Klae made it black and white you still notice that there’s a rider on a 700kg bull in the air, but you also see a lot more details about the picture—that the dirt is kicked up off the ground, there’s rust on the chute fence and you can see all the fine details on the bull rider’s shirt.

Klae said he hasn’t been keen on entering photo competitions in the past.

“I think art is in the eye of the beholder and it all depends upon what a judge likes.

Diversity key for Essential Energy’s longest employee You’d think a person would get bored after working for 47 years in the same field, however that hasn’t been the case for local Robert ‘Bob’ De Jong, who is currently Essential Energy’s longest serving employee.

Since he started his apprenticeship as a linesman’s assistant at the end of 1973 with the Macquarie County Council, Bob’s had three promotions and the company’s had five name changes—Macquarie Electricity, Western Power, Advance Energy, Country Energy and Essential Energy, as it is known today.

Bob said it’s the diversity of his job that’s kept him there all this time and needing to be a ‘jack of all trades’ also makes the job interesting.

A line worker’s day could include anything from repairing, replacing or constructing overhead and underground power supply networks, responding to emergencies, reconnections or disconnections, metering or supply quality investigations.

After growing up in the bush, Bob said working outdoors was something that he enjoyed.

After leaving school at 17, Bob worked for 12 months with his father, who was a builder.

“But he didn’t pay me so I moved on.

“I told him I needed a job where I could make money,” Bob said.

He then worked at Turton’s garage for 18 months before he was approached by Macquarie County Council’s foreman ‘Speck’ Gilbert to apply for the apprenticeship.

“He was involved putting the power on our property years ago where used to live out on the Coolabah Road,” Bob said.

“He knew me and encouraged me to apply for the job.”

After completing his three year apprenticeship (with the theory part completed via correspondence) Bob was promoted to linesman.

In 1993 he was appointed as Leading Hand and in 2002, after initially filling in as the team leader for 18 months, he was officially promoted as Team Leader at the Cobar depot.

Bob said he never really liked being deskbound and when things became computerized

he enjoyed it even less.

After being Team Leader for 10 years he decided to go back to working in the field.

“I’m back where I started as a linesman.

I’ve done a full circle and I’m enjoying mentoring the young people coming through.”

The “young people coming through” however have it much easier these days than Bob did when he first started.

Bob recalls none of the work vehicles had radios.

“We had no communication whatsoever.

“The worst and the best part of the job is being out in the bush in storms.

“We didn’t have any winches on our trucks and so if you got bogged you had to walk for miles to get help.”

Bob recalls on one job he had to walk 20km to get to the highway to flag down someone.

He said the biggest changes he’s seen over the years are in the areas of safety and tech-

nology.

The geographic area they service has also increased greatly as more and more rural properties were connected to power.

“When I first started our furthest trip would have been Nymagee, so about a 100km radius and back in 1976 we started the line south to Mount Hope.”

Bob could now be working one day in Cobar and the next in Bourke, Walgett, Broken Hill, Forbes or Condobolin.

“Just after Christmas we went down to Cobargo after the bushfires to help out replacing lines and poles that had all been destroyed.”

Bob did have plans to retire this year, however the COVID-19 pandemic has forced him to delay his retirement a bit longer.

“We had planned to do some travelling, but as we can’t do that at the moment, I might as well continue working,” Bob said.

Man arrested for choking female A man has been charged with multiple offences following a domestic violence incident on Friday night.

Police attended a local residence around 10.30pm on Friday night in response to a call regarding a domestic violence incident in which a female victim had been choked by a male.

When police arrived they found the man had locked himself in the house.

Cobar Police Sergeant Chris Power said police forced entry however the person of interest had decamped from the scene.

He was later located by police at 1.50am and arrested and charged with two counts of intimidation; two counts of contravene an apprehended violence order; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; two counts of common assault; intimidate and choke with recklessness; and breach bail.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Broken Hill Local Court via video link on Saturday morning.

Public speaking is a great skill to have and is used in lots of areas. It might be for work (lawyers, teachers, managers, sales, etc); for sport (coaches and team captains often get called upon to make a speech); or you might be asked to toast the bride and groom at a wedding; make an announcement over a PA system; or you could even find yourself in the spotlight up on stage!

• It’s sad news that this year’s Festival of the Miner’s Ghost has had to be cancelled due to the uncertainty around COVID-19 restrictions on crowd numbers. Barry Knight, who organises the annual Miners Memorial event as part of the festival, is hoping this year’s memorial may be able to still go ahead in some way, possibly televised via social media.

• Woohoo! Burrendong Dam (where Cobar’s water supply is originally sourced) is now sitting at 40.2 per cent capacity which is fantastic news. It’s a massive improvement from the less than one per cent it dropped to in January this year.

• Cobar had freezing weather over the weekend however there were still good crowds reported at Saturday’s Picnic Races, the Cobar Senior Rugby League and Junior Rugby League home games, the Cobar Camels Rugby game and a good crowd also turned out in the main street on Saturday morning for the Dust Bowl Fuel Burners coffee and cars day. And we hear there were also quite a few out on the golf course braving the cold weather.

• Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed an attempted break and enter at The John Mitchell

morning. Police report CCTV footage from the incident shows the perpetrator had their face and hands covered and so no ID or forensic evidence could be attained from the scene.

• We’ve spotted a few people wearing face masks in different businesses, around town, at a local school (and of course at the health service and medical practices). Unsure if you’re supposed to be wearing one? NSW Health advises wearing a mask is not mandatory, however they do recommend you wear a mask if it hard to maintain 1.5 metres distance form others; when caring for or serving vulnerable people; if you have any COVID-19 symptoms and are seeking medical care; or if you are going to get tested for COVID-19. Wearing a mask helps to reduce community transmission as COVID-19 is spread via coughs, sneezes or if an infected person speaks near another person.

• How good was the pre-game and halftime entertainment at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday with the Roosters Minis players running on to show off their skills before the First Graders, who were also very entertaining!

• Good luck to the Cobar Roosters First Grade and Ladies League Tag teams who travel to Baradine this Saturday for Round 7 of the Castlereagh Rugby League competition.

• Good luck also to the Nyngan Bulls/Cobar Camels side as they play Bourke in their last match of the round in the Western Plains Rugby competition at Nyngan on Saturday.

The team is tracking well for the semi finals which commence next week.

• Cobar’s senior netballers will be thrilled with this Saturday’s forecast of warm conditions after the woeful weather they’ve had to play in for the start of this season!

Naoko returns to win Picnic Cup

Having won the WesTrac Cobar Cup at the professional meeting in 2019, nine year old chestnut mare Naoko completed a feature race double on Saturday winning the 1,700 metres DJW & Wells Ventilation Cobar Picnic Cup at the 103rd start in a race.

Trained at Dubbo by Connie Greig and ridden by Brazilian born Leandro Ribeiro, Naoko settled near the tail of the field, with frontrunner Good Host setting a solid pace.

Cooee March (Ashley Boyd, $3 favourite) hit the lead in the straight but was overhauled and beaten in a close photo finish by Naoko ($4.60) which ran home strongly on the outside while Snatcha (Wayne Wheatley, $4.60) raced handy to the lead and held on for third.

During a long career Naoko has accumulated $123,705 prizemoney from nine wins and 22 placings.

Narromine-based Ricky Blewitt rode a winning treble commencing with the Wayne Marsden, Menindee trained Rebecca’s Quest in the 1,000 metres Cynend Building & Construction Class B Handicap.

Travelling wide near the lead from the outside barrier, Rebecca’s Quest ($4.60) staged a good performance to win from Scarpa (Maddison Wright, $2.20 fav.) and Vanzant (Leandro Ribeiro, $2.70).

Ricky Blewitt then had the mount on the Nathan Sinclair, Moree-trained I Am Dynamic in the 1,200 metres WesTrac Sprint where a rush for the early lead saw five horses racing abreast to the home turn.

I Am Dynamic ($6) enjoyed a good run behind the duelling leaders and won by a long neck from Another Plan (Wayne Wheatley, $4) which finished fast from the back of the field while Military Bay (Ashley Boyd, $1.80 fav.) battled on for third after being attacked for the lead.

From the Kylie Kennedy stable at Narromine, Wilburglen ($3.60) became the third leg of the Ricky Blewitt treble when leading most of the way to beat Small Dream (Maddison Wright, $3.50) and Get Up Alby (Leandro Ribeiro, $4.20) in the 1,400 metres Landmark Russell Class B Handicap.

Nyngan trainer Rodney Robb and Moruyabased jockey Maddison Wright combined to win the 1,000 metres Sullivan’s Mining & Hardware Maiden Plate with the strongly supported Our Town.

After racing on the outside of the leader, Our Town ($2.80 to $1.90 favourite) broke clear for a decisive win from Princess Zafirah (Ashley Boyd $2.50) and Cinders (Alan Barton, $5) which set the pace.—Colin Hodges

Camels back on their home turf

The Cobar Camels were back playing on the home turf at Alisa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval on Saturday when they hosted Walgett for Round 5 of the 2020 Western Plains Rugby competition. Combining with Nyngan this season, the hybrid Nyngan/Cobar team has been wearing the Bulls uniform however they donned the Camels’ traditional green and gold jerseys to take on Walgett on Saturday. Walgett had the edge in individual class, organisation and fitness to finish as 46-10 winners.

Players out in worst golfing weather After two weekends in a row of washed-out golf, golfers were finally able to get in four days of golf but it was however played in the worst golfing weather this season.

There was a small field of six players contesting last Wednesday’s Men’s Golf mid-week Stableford.

It was a sheepish Super-Vet Max Phillips, who, despite wearing a jacket, three jumpers and two beanies, picked up his winner’s cheque at the awards ceremony having scored only 28 points, on a day where the average score was a pitiful 22 points, a testament to the conditions!

Captain Peter ‘China’ Brien came an unrespectable 2nd with 26 points.

Friday was the annual Cobar Vets tournament and there was a good roll-up of 48 players.

Ten players braved the wintery conditions on Saturday to contest the 6th Round of the Captain’s Trophy, a Stroke event.

Alex Fraser, used to cold conditions crawling in and out of air-conditioners, handled the conditions best with a good score of 68 net, three

shots clear of Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence on 71 and Bill Fugar came in third on 75.

Nearest the Pins went to: 3rd hole–Bill Fugar, 11th—Greg Clark and 15th Mark Fraser.

The 7th and 8th were not won.

Sunday’s game was an individual Stableford with the weather still not good for golf.

Jason Foster scored a good 39 points to beat Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence and Paul Kershaw on 36 points with Ding getting up on a count-back.

Stewart Fraser came fourth with 34 points.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won on the 3rd and 11 holes by Mark Fraser, 8th Bill Fugar, and 15th David Tomek.

Greg Clark put in a big effort.

He played on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and helped out with the service of food and coffee on Friday for Veteran’s Day. The Monthly Medal, a Stableford event which should have been run in July, will be played this Saturday.

Roosterettes thrilled the big crowd with a comeback win

Roosterettes captain and co-coach, Bianka Jacobson did a good job of leading her team to a thrilling 30-26 win over Gilgandra on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Fugar and Stephenson win Vets titles The Vets Golf Championships, held last Friday, attracted 47 golfers from around the area including Warren, Coonamble, Nyngan and Brewarrina.

Bill Fugar took the outright men’s title with a scratch score of 77 and also picked up the Nearest the Pin prize on the 3rd hole.

The Stableford winner in Division 1 was Mark Martin with 34 points with Peter ‘China’ Brien was hot on his heels with 33 points for runner-up.

It was another close finish in Division 2 with Will Brown, on 29 points claiming the win from Robbie Cummins on 28.

Other nearest the pin winners for the men were S. McDougal, P.Shipton, Steve Manns and Mal Matheson.

Phill Gilligan made a welcome return to Co-

bar for the event and claimed the Longest Drive prize in Division 1.

Stu McCallum took out the Division 2 Longest Drive prize.

The Division 1 Ladies Scratch winner was Jenny Stephenson with 77 off the stick (the same score as the men’s winner!).

The Division 1 Stableford win went to Chrissy Gilligan on 34 points with Fay Hardwick a close second with 32.

Jannine Wilkin survived a three-way countback to win Division 2 when they all scored 31 points. Daphne Cross was the runner-up.

After trailing by 12 points at half time, the Cobar Roosterettes fought their way back to record a 30-26 win over Gilgandra to thrill the big crowd at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday.

Gilgandra had narrowly beaten the Roosterettes 25-24 in their Round 1 game at Gilgandra five weeks ago, and so the stage had been set for the all important re-match on Saturday on Cobar’s home turf.

After an intense seven minute battle, Gilgrandra opened the scoring with a try out wide but it wasn’t long after that Kayla Hasson replied for the Roosterettes.

Brianna Watson’s successful conversion put Cobar ahead 6-4 and Aisha Schofield extended the Roosterettes’ lead shortly after when she snuck over to score out wide.

Gilgandra wrestled back the lead and, with two quick tries before half time, they had taken the ascendency with a 22-10 lead.

The Cobar side returned to the field with purpose after the break with hardworking centres Bianka Jacobson and Tyler Chiswick directing Cobar’s play and it wasn’t long before Jezebel Hitchins scored.

A second try to Hasson then narrowed the margin to 22-18.

Watson’s converted try immediately after the drinks break put Cobar ahead but the celebrations were short-lived when Gilgrandra hit back with an unconverted try to grab back the lead.

The Cobar team however was fired up and you could see they didn’t want this game to be a repeat of the last.

Jacobson, Watson and Nichola Heagney teamed up in attack which resulted in a late try by Heagney and Watson’s conversion put Cobar in front 30-26 with two minutes left on the clock.

The Roosterettes dug in in defence to finish the match with a four point win.

Co-Coach Jay Egan said a few changes with their halves playing a more traditional role had worked for the Roosterettes for this match.

“They’re a classy side, with plenty of speed,” Egan said of the Gilgandra visitors.

“Our tagging still needs some an improvement but we were focused, our passing and ball handling was really good and they all wanted to win.”

Best and Fairest points went to Watson (3), Heagney (2) and Grace Burge (1).

Hasson and Chiswick shared the Players’ Player Award.

Rugged up golfers There were some brave golfers on the course last week tackling blizzard like conditions while rugged up like Eskimos.

Investigations continue as to the whereabouts of other missing golfers but locked doors, smoking chimneys and phones going unanswered are the clues uncovered thus far.

After previously being rained out, the first round of the Ladies Club Championships went ahead on Saturday in atrocious weather.

With so many layers on to keep warm, many a golfer had trouble swinging a stick!

The Scratch leaders after Round 1 are: A Grade—Jenny Stephenson with 124 and Narelle Kriz 130; in B Grade Serena Fraser is sitting on 152 with Marlene Wynd on 166; and Karen Walsh’s four ‘chip ins’ contributed to her leading the way in C Grade (180) from Joy Josephson (200).

Round 2 will be played this Saturday and an 18 hole game will also played in conjunction with the Championships.

Players not taking part in the Championships can still play in the 18 hole competition.

A field of 27 players turned out on Sunday for the Annual Pink Day Stableford (raising money for breast cancer).

Glenda Peebles, Chrissy Gilligan and Wan Sipatsa teamed up well to win the day with 33 points.

The individual winner was Janet Place scoring 38 points on a tough course.

Wan Sipatsa had 37, Glenda Peebles (improving every week) posted 36 followed by Jenny Stephenson 35, Narelle Kriz 33, Geraldine Francisco 32, Chrissy Gilligan 30 and Angela Fryer on 29.

In A Grade Jenny Stephenson and Janet Place claimed the Nearest the Pin prizes on the 7th and 15th holes; the B and C Grade pins on the same holes were both won by Brenda Fugar and Glenda Peebles respectively.

Pat Polack, Narelle Kriz and Jannine Wilkin were awarded the ‘Best Dressed’ team for the second year running.

Last Wednesday’s weather was mild for the Par game compared to the rest of the week with Jenny Stephenson winning the day on a countback from Daphne Cross after both scored -3.

Robynne Morton was next with -5.

The Nearest the Pin prize on the 3rd hole went to Jenny Stephenson in A grade, Daphne Cross and Marlene Wynd for B Grade and Sue Phillips in C Grade.

Roosters tackled the Tigers at TKMO The Junior Roosters kicked off another big day of rugby league on Saturday when they hosted the Nyngan Tigers juniors before the senior club took on Gilgandra at Tom Knight Memorial Oval (TKMO).

Cobar’s Under 10s started the day off right beating the Nyngan Tigers in a very close game. The Roosters came out on top as 34-30 victors. Try-scoring machine Rowdy Barton couldn’t be stopped running in a record five tries for Cobar with Jaxon Waugh also crossing for the Roosters. Rowdy, Jaxon, Cohan Nicholson, Aiden Hyland and Charlie Nicholson were responsible for their conversions and all shared the Coach’s Awards.

The Cobar Under 12s narrowly lost their game to Nyngan 16-10.

Nate Martin and Hayden Seng were their try scorers with Nate also landing one goal. Ryan Mugugia and Nate shared the Coach’s Awards.

Nyngan were too good for Cobar in the Under 14s match with the Tigers finishing as 44-4 winners. Jayden Paul was responsible for Cobar’s four points. Gage Walker and Reece Josephson earned the Coach’s Awards.

In the Under 16s game, Nyngan again finished as winners, defeating the Roosters 34-10.

Zane Taylor and Reynold Mugugia crossed for tries for the Roosters with Ryan Urquhart landing one conversion.

The Coach’s Awards were collected by Jarrod Hilton, Brain Chapula and Jayden Paul.

The Minis players had two runs over the weekend and, in addition to their regular games on Sunday morning, they also played a couple of exhibition matches at the senior games on Saturday in front of a big crowd.

This week’s Under 6s Coach’s Awards went to Cameron Fennamore and Keelan Atuau while the Under 8s Coach’s Awards were earned by Riley Jeffries and Logan Fennamore.

Junior Roosters gave the Panthers a 48-10 drubbing The Cobar Roosters Under 18s recorded a 48-10 drubbing of the Gilgandra Panthers in Round 6 of the Castlereagh Youth League competition on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The big win more than made amends for the young Roosters narrow 16-12 loss when the two sides last met in Round 1 at Gilgandra and puts Cobar in third spot on the competition ladder above Gilgandra.

After leading 18-10 at half time, the Cobar juniors finished strongly to record an emphatic 38 points win in front of a big home crowd.

Ash Davies, with three tries, led the scoring for Cobar with Seb Best and Zane Taylor each running in two and Jacob Christie also touched down for the Roosters.

Lachlan Ford landed eight goals to help the Roosters to their big win.

The 18s have a bye this week and next week take on second placed Binnaway.

Beetson back in the winners circle

Brad Beetson teamed up with Gerard Livingston to win Sunday’s social bowls game at the Golfie last week.

Beetson won on a count back from Craig and George Fraser after both teams Jacob Christie on his way to the try line for the Cobar Rooters Under 18s. Roosters play out a grinding 16-all draw It’s been said before that Cobar Roosters rugby league teams are hard to beat at home and that was again the case when the previously unbeaten top of the table Gilgandra First Grade visited on Saturday.

The Round 6 match of the Christie and Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition was an exciting game that finished in a grinding 16-all draw.

The Cobar side, which just keeps getting better each week, had a score to settle from Round 1 in which Gilgandra finished as 40-20 winners, and while they would have liked to have claimed a win, the Roosters demonstrated they were equal to the competition leaders on

Saturday.

Played in very wintery conditions at Tom Knight Memorial Oval, the home side took a 10-6 lead to the break after fullback Tim Hillam swivelled out of the grasp of would-be tacklers early in proceedings to commence what was to be territorially a big half for the home side.

It took until the 33rd minute before the Panthers were to register their first points, courtesy of a try to their classy second rower Alex Ronanye.

Luke Ritchie raised the flags from the conversion and the visitors took the lead 6-4.

That lead however was short lived with the

Rooster’s rangy centre Nathan McAndrew benefiting from some good ball movement down the left flank and he plunged over out wide to score.

To the delight of the Roosters crowd Jimmy Neyland nailed the sideline conversion to complete the first half scoring.

The break did the Panthers no harm and their livewire hooker, Jamie Towney soon had the visitors back in front when he was able to force his way over from dummy half in the third minute for a converted try.

With good field position being offered on a platter to the Roosters through a series of conceded penalties, the Panthers were on the back foot and forced to defend their line grimly, something that they were called on to do repeatedly throughout the second stanza as the Roosters launched attack after attack.

They did however crack when Cobar’s second-rower Sione Fakahua, was able to touch down after 11 minutes of the second half had elapsed to score what was to become a very important converted try for his side.

The Panthers responded at the mid-way point of the half when Towney was able to go in again out wide to lock the scores up at 16-all.

From that point the game was well and truly in the balance and, with Cobar applying the pressure, it seemed only a matter of time before they would edge ahead as they repeatedly pounded the Gilgandra line.

The visitors however were equal to the challenge and their resilience in defence over the final stages of the game was the key to them being able to bank the very important one competition point for the draw which sees them remain two points ahead of the Roosters on the competition ladder as the race to the minor premiership heats up.

Cobar however will be buoyed by their recent performances and they most certainly are well and truly a major premiership contender.
