May Higgins celebrates her 100th birthday

Two of Australia’s much loved icons have just celebrated their 100th birthdays, one is Ginger Meggs, who made his debut 100 years ago in the Sunday Sun, and the other is Cobar’s May Higgins who turned 100 on Sunday.

Those who know May Higgins, know what a truly amazing lady she is.

At 100, May still lives in her own home and, while she does have a bit of help around the house and garden from family members, she is still very much independent.

May (or Shelia May Manns as she was born on November 21, 1921 in Wrightsville, and delivered by Nurse Punch) was one of 14 children.

She married Norm Higgins in 1943, during World War 11, and the couple had six daughters.

May said Norm never felt “outnumbered” by the females in his house and very much loved his daughters.

The Higgins family were involved in the community with May and Norm helping out with the town marching team and later the swimming club.

May still attends the Cobar Swimming Club’s presentations each year to award the Norm Higgins Overall Most Improved perpetual trophy.

With six children, May said she was kept busy as a housewife and she also took in some sewing which she enjoyed, along with handicraft work.

These days May said she’s had to give up sewing as her eyesight has deteriorated but she still likes to knit and is kept busy with orders for her knitted coat hanger covers for Cards of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth 11, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the Governor General David Hurley, Federal Member Mark Coulton and a certificate from family and friends.

Rachel will call last drinks on Sunday

Buffaloes kick off fundraiser

A project to raise funds to build memorials at the Cobar Cemetery to honour former Cobar residents Kate McKenzie and Johnny the Balt (John Kowalski) has been kicked off with a generous donation of $500 from the members of the Cobar Buffalo Lodge.

Pictured above is Jill Weaving, who’s heading up the graves restoration project, with Bev and Terry Clyde from the Buffaloes last week. Details of how to make a donation to the project can be found in the committee’s advertisement on Page 16.

When licensee Rachel Warren calls “last drinks” this Sunday night at the Great Western Hotel it will be the last time she does it.

Rachel has chosen not to renew the lease and along with a few of her staff, she’s heading to the Sunshine Coast to take on a new venture in the hospitality field.

Rachel and partner David Portelli took over the lease of the Great Western in October 2016 and the couple went in with plans to make lots of improvements.

They didn’t all come to fruition but Rachel said she’ll be taking some good memories of the place with her, in particular from their very successful Orphans Christmas parties.

“We started doing them for people who didn’t have anyone to celebrate with at Christmas and then people would travel to come and see their family in Cobar and then they’d all have Christmas here,” she said.

They had 164 for the first Christmas Day lunch in 2016 and it kept on growing.

“The biggest one we had was 360 people.”

While a new lease has yet to be signed, Paul McGirr who owns the hotel, said he’s “had interest from a few different parties”.

Mr McGirr said they were currently speaking with one local party and one from interstate however he wasn’t sure if anything would be finalised by the time Rachel finishes up this week.

“It’s more than likely we’ll be running it,” he said.

Rachel said she hopes Mr McGirr will now take the opportunity to “pour some money into it” as it could be really “amazing”.

Local band Ballz n All to join in Christmas celebrations Local band, Ballz n All, have been booked to play at this year’s Christmas Street Parade & Gala Shopping Night.

Sponsorship from Glencore CSA Mine and Sandvik for this year’s event has enabled the Cobar Business Association to amp up the night’s entertainment and bring in the live band to play after the parade.

While the annual community event has always provided plenty of family fun, the addition of Ballz n All with their “in your face, pub rock” style of music should make the night more appealing to a wider age demographic.

Made up of Mark Kotynia, (bass player/ manager/sound and lighting guy/roadie), Kahlia Martin (guitar and vocals) and Degen Brown (lead vocals and the triangle), the Ballz n All band formed about three years ago after a few drinks.

“We’ve all known each other for a long time,” Mark said.

“We came up with the idea (after about 15 Johnny Walkers) that we should get together and do a gig.

“We debuted at a ‘Four on the Floor’ [at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club] and people loved it.”

The trio hadn’t been playing together long when they got booked for the ‘Gig on the Grass’ concert at Ward Oval as part of the Grey Mardi Gras Festival in April 2019.

Their performance was very well received with many locals saying their set was the standout performance of the night.

“On the ‘big stage’ is where we really come to life,” Mark said.

“It was a buzz for us all to be able to entertain our community and we gave it everything we had. That was our chance to show the community ‘here we are - get ready!’.

“It probably was the event that launched us, as we hadn’t been together long at that point,” Mark said.

Ballz n All then started getting noticed around the central west and on average were doing three gigs each month.

They were also still all working in their other jobs: Mark as a Light Vehicle Fitter at the Peak Mine; Kahlia in finance department, also at Peak; and Degen who’s had a few different starts and Mark says he’s currently a professional house renovator.

They played at the Beerfest in Condobolin, the David Bowie Festival at Carinda, Duck Creek Races at Nyngan, as well as other race meets in the area.

“We also played regularly in Parkes and Bourke and have done many private events in the region and travelled about 1,200km per month,” Mark said.

However the COVID pandemic hit in March 2020 and had a big effect on the entertainment industry. For the past 18 months the band has had a limited number of opportunities to perform together.

“It was a real struggle having everything locked down and cancelled, especially when

our calendar was becoming so full.”

Mark said they were however lucky they still had day jobs, as all of their music work was cancelled.

He said their gig calendar is now starting to fill up again and, along with the Christmas Street Parade night, they’ve also got a number of other Christmas parties lined up and more gigs in Bourke and Parkes.

They’re also booked to play at the Golfie on New Year’s Eve and have bookings into next year for the Tottenham Races, the Coonabarabran Show and Condo Beerfest.

“We’re about to release our merchandise, so look out for that on Parade night,” Mark said.

Aerial survey highlights priority mineral targets

A recently completed aeromagnetic survey of Legacy Minerals’ licences near Cobar has highlighted copper-gold targets along the Lachlan Ford Belt.

Legacy Minerals, in participation with Geoscience Australia and the Geological Survey of NSW, completed over 1,000km of flight lines during the survey.

The company reports the processing and interpretation of the data gained from the survey has identified 21 high priority targets including the Yarrawonga prospect, which has been deemed an “area of significant interest”.

Legacy Minerals’ exploration manager and executive director Thomas Wall said the survey results from two of their licences gives them further encouragement.

“Cobar-type deposits are primarily structurally controlled deposits, requiring the structural ‘plumbing’ and ‘traps’ for the these deposits to occur and we are seeing this ingredient here,” Mr Wall said.

“The major structures identified in the aeromagnetic data trend through the entire length of both tenements.

“This new data, in conjunction with the previously completed AEM [Airborne Electromagnetics] survey, has focused our attention on priority targets for follow up surface geochemical sampling work,” he said.

“Having these untested targets only a few kilometres from the world-class Peak Gold Mines and CSA Mine is very positive and we look forward to defining quality drill targets.”

Council reviews a few items in budget Cobar Shire Councillors will be presented with a report at tomorrow night’s Ordinary Council Meeting that calls for an increase of $70,000 for the 2021/2022 Budget.

Council’s director of finance and community services, Kym Miller said “a robust review” of operating and capital income and expenditure for the first quarter of this financial year has been conducted “Only significant items are recommended to be adjusted in this review,” Mr Miller said.

In his report he advised the Sewer fund requires an increase of $40,000 in operating costs to accommodate unforeseen work needed on increased blockages which are appearing in the system and the cemetery operating costs also need to be allocated a further $30,000 for extra work that was not initially allocated.

Mr Miller said while there are some minor variations to some expense lines, “they do not influence the budget position significantly and tend to offset one another”.

He also reported on a few other matters that may have further impacts on the budget at a later date.

With regards to Council’s proposed capital and major projects, Mr Miller said the current economic environment was “proving to be very difficult with construction costs exceeding initial quantity surveys by significant amounts”.

“Demand for construction work is very strong and this is impacting prices tendered,” Mr Miller reports.

He advised that Council had already resolved to make a further $80,000 available and “this figure may require further consideration in the Quarter 2 Budget Review”.

Mr Miller also reported that early indications on costings for Council to upgrade the recently acquired Cobar Memorial Children’s Hostel so that the COOSH (Cobar Out Of School Hours) childcare centre can run out of the building would require some key works, including a suitable kitchen, toilet and some cosmetic changes which are estimated to be in “the order of $250,000”.

“This item will be workshopped and formally considered by Council when it is able to do so,” Mr Miller said.

Mayor praises Cr Yench’s service This Thursday will be the last Ordinary Meeting of the current council which is now in Caretaker Mode until after the election is declared on December 4.

A meeting was being held in Narromine to-

day which is the initial meeting of the central NSW councils. This is the equivalent of the old OROC (Orana Regional Organisations of Councils).

OROC used to benefit its members by combining electrical power bills and road sealing charges which led to them getting considerably lower costs amongst member councils due to economies of scale.

Looking to kick-start a career in Ag? The Australian Government celebrated National Agriculture Day last week by announcing a $5.1 million grants program that will help recent school leavers to start a career in agriculture in their gap year.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said AgCAREERSTART would give recent school leavers opportunities, experience and skills to enter the agriculture sector and provide longterm pathways to agricultural careers.

“An agricultural gap year opens up a whole universe of amazing careers in this thriving, important sector, from livestock and cropping to technology, innovation and entrepreneurship,” Minister Littleproud said.

The new Agventure pilot program, to be delivered by an industry consortium led by the National Farmers Federation, is a structured

employment program to help young Australians to start a career in agriculture in their gap year. Participants will be employed by the agricultural sector under award wages, be fully supported throughout, including relocation assistance, ongoing pastoral care and provided accredited training in operational skills important to safely working on an operational farm.

“It’s about encouraging young Australians to give working in the agriculture sector a go and provide a taste of what a regional lifestyle can offer,” Minister Littleproud said.

Agriculture offers many diverse career opportunities, and this program aims to give participants training and insights into the rewarding, challenging and varied experiences that work on farms can offer through a placement with participating farms.

“Some of our judges can be wowed with a big display of Christmas lights, while others are just as impressed with Christmas decorations that include inflatables, wooden cut-outs, tinsel, baubles, music and special effects.

“We do ask our judges to look at the overall display and then rank each one.

“They each get a score out of five and we tally all the results to find our winners.”

More good rain

The rain on Sunday that continued on and off into the early hours of Monday morning has been welcomed by residents in Cobar with a total of 26.6mm recorded in the Bureau of Meteorology’s rain gauges.

Temperatures were mostly very warm last week with 32.8 degrees the top daytime temperature on Thursday before it climbed to 35.6 degrees on Friday.

Saturday was slightly cooler with 29.5 degrees the maximum daytime temperature before it dropped to a much cooler 15.5 on Sunday.

Monday started off fresh with the mercury recording 13.8 degrees at 7am before reaching a top of 20.3 during the day.

The Bureau is predicting milder temperatures with possible rainfall for the remainder of the week with a top of 29 today and a very high chance of 10-20mm of rain while tomorrow is expected to reach a high of 25 with the chance of rain and a thunderstorm.

Friday should be partly cloudy and 22, Saturday is forecast to be slightly cooler and 20 degrees while’s Sunday predicted high is 23.

Long service recognition

Productive meeting Cobar VIEW Club Ladies conducted a productive meeting while enjoying good company and fine food last Tuesday at the Empire Hotel.

Discussion centered around the club’s Christmas raffle which will consist of prizes of Cobar Quids and Gift Vouchers in support of local businesses.

Funds raised go to VIEW Club head office to support the five students the Cobar club sponsors in the Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ project.

Arrangements for the club’s Christmas party were also finalised at last week’s meeting with a hands-on run through of the gift swap game, to iron out any queries as to how it would operate.

A fun auction of Phyllis Budd’s famous rum balls will be a feature of the day and members are encouraged to take along a guest and dress festively to enjoy the music, games and Christmas cheer.

Vaccination rates are pretty good

Between 80-90 per cent of Cobar’s residents aged 15 and over are now doublevaccinated for COVID according to the Department of Health’s updated figures as of Sunday.

Cobar sits near the bottom of the state’s ranking with many of the Sydney Local Government Areas (LGAs) having reached rates of more than 95 per cent of their populations that have received two doses.

A number of central and western area LGAs are also showing rates of more than 95 per cent and include Dubbo, Orange, Cowra, Narromine, Warren, Gilgrandra, Forbes, Parkes and Griffith.

The towns of Bourke and Nyngan are registering 90 per cent while Broken Hill is at 86.6 per cent.

Brewarrina sits below Cobar with the Department of Health showing only 70-80 per cent of residents have had their second vaccination.

After two recent positive tests for COVID fragments at Cobar’s sewage plant (on November 4 and 8), there have been no further positive detections in the past week.

Fed funding for Cobar Shire Council drought affected communities Public Notices

The Australian Government is backing communities impacted by and recovering from drought, with 38 new projects sharing in over $1.3 million funding.

The funding was announced yesterday as part of Round 22 of the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal’s Tackling Tough Times Together program.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said this federal funding injection will be amplified by coinvestments that bring the total value of the projects to over $3.3 million.

“As a proud regional Australian, I know only too well how long the impacts of drought are felt, and with the additional economic pinch of COVID-19, it’s important now more than ever that we keep standing side by side with those hard-hit communities,” Deputy Prime Minister Joyce said.

“This initiative funds economy-boosting community events like regional fairs or arts shows, smaller infrastructure upgrades that improve communal amenities, volunteer facilities or accessibility, or purchasing vital equipment to bolster local operations and existing projects.

“These projects not only provide muchneeded economic stimulus to communities but also help reduce social isolation, drive leadership development and skills training, increase social and educational participation, address disadvantage for youth, reduce volunteer fatigue, and build local capacity.

“Our regions and agricultural hubs are essential to our national identity and economy, so when our farmers and their communities face the realities of taps running dry, it’s vital we rally around them to tackle those challenges together – and that’s exactly what this program is doing.”

Among the 420 projects are community events such as extra RuralCONNECT Activity Days for isolated children and families in Louth and a Food and Wine festival in Stanthorpe.

Christmas/New Years Office Closure Residents and visitors are advised the Cobar Shire Council Administration building including Service NSW located at 36 Linsley Street, Children Services, Cobar Shire & TAFE Library, Euabalong Works Depot and Council Works Depot will be closed for the annual Christmas shutdown from close of business Thursday December 23, 2021 through to Friday January 7, 2022, re-opening on Monday January 10, 2022.

The Great Cobar Museum Information Centre will be closed from end of business Thursday December 23, 2021 through to Monday January 3, 2022 and will re-open on Tuesday January 4, 2022.

Kubby House Childcare Centre will be closed from end of business Wednesday December 22, 2021 through to Monday January 10, 2022 and will re-open Tuesday January 11, 2022.

Tucker truck was welcomed

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Tucker Truck was in Cobar last week offering a free community barbecue lunch on Tuesday and breakfast on Wednesday morning and used the opportunity to “have a chat” with locals. In light of recent events that have impacted the local community, the RFDS was committed to showing their support and make the public aware of the services they can provide including Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol support. May celebrates 100th birthday

As Norm’s health deteriorated in his late 50’s, May became his nurse and she looked after him at home for three years before Norm died at age 60.

May said she’s grateful to have had a mostly enjoyable life (apart from losing her husband and two daughters too early to illnesses).

She lists her family, that also includes 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren (plus another on the way), and seven great, great grandchildren, as the best things in her life.

Her 100th birthday this week has been a “mini family reunion” with most of her family joining her at the Empire Hotel on Saturday for her 100th birthday lunch (May was one of the last to leave on Saturday night).

There were more celebrations and cake on Sunday for her “actual birthday” and May was still celebrating when we spoke to her on Monday.

May said she’s seen a lot of changes in her life, some good (“bitumen roads, but they’re all falling to pieces now” and washing machines beat the old copper she used to use in the back yard) and some bad (the pandemic).

Apart from a few aches and pains, May said she hasn’t had too much to complain about.

May said she didn’t have an actual goal to reach 100.

“I just thought I’d go along as I am and I’ll continue to go along as I am.”

Those plans include continuing her weekly outings with the family for dinner at the Empire and having a “doctor approved” gin each night to help her sleep.

• Good on Ya to Maree Punzet from Maree’s Mobile Bookkeeping who kindly donated a wheelie walker to the Services Club to be used by the elderly (or anyone needing assistance) at the club. It will be of help to some of the patrons who have gotten a bit frail but don’t want to impose on family or friends to bring their walkers with them. Now the club has one ‘on tap’ to save them the trouble.

Lilliane Brady Village Recreational Activities Officer Casual Position POSITION SUMMARY The provision of leisure and recreational activities to enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, and emotional wellbeing of residents at the Lilliane Brady Village.

Duties: • Determine each resident’s psychological, leisure, spiritual, social, and emotional needs, and any barriers to participation in leisure and recreational pursuits in accordance with the Lilliane Brady Village’s policy and protocols.

• Develop and display a monthly ‘Activities Program’ that reflects the preferences of residents.

• Develop, in conjunction with each resident or their representative and care staff, individualised activities programs to address special physiological and/or psychological needs of residents.

Chief Executive Officer The Cobar Local Aboriginal Land Council is seeking suitable applicants for the above position. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will be responsible to the Members and will report to the Chairperson and Board of Directors.

DUTIES: To undertake duties involving the day-to-day administration and financial management of the Land Council in accordance with the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1983). This will include maintaining the organisation's policies and guidelines in its endeavours to achieve community objectives set out in the Community Land and Business Plan, with an emphasis on submissions, maintaining accountability and capacity building. We also manage a growing housing stock of 27 properties & additional blocks of land.

ESSENTIAL: Applicants must have experience in office management and administration, the ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.

Strong communication and negotiation skills together with an understanding of Aboriginal issues and experience in WH&S practices.

Solid practical experience running funded projects and programs.

It’s the CATS biggest turn-out in memory, with 33 the previous best attendance.

The club’s Short Course (300m swim/10okm ride/2km run) current record holder, Hannah Young was back in town on the weekend to defend the course record she set in January this year.

On Sunday she went one better and beat her previous record to set a new time of 39 minutes 55 seconds.

Isaac Theakston set a new personal best (PB) time of 35.54 which was just 30 seconds off the men’s Short Course record.

The Handicapped winners on the day were Team Young & Old (Chris Powell and Tolu Adesina) who completed the long course (500m swim/20km ride/4km run) in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 34 seconds.

Another Long Course team, The Naumans (Tommy Bryan, Zac Broughton and Nauman Faisal), finished in second place and Isaac Theakston was third overall in the handicapped event.

In the Try-a-Tri event there were five individuals and three teams with a total of 14 competitors overall taking on the 200m swim, 5km ride and 2km run.

It’s hoped the rain didn’t scare them off and they’ll be back again for more events.

Win for Golf Club

Golf Club chased down 135 runs to win their 40 Overs senior cricket match over Empire with two wickets in hand on Saturday.

Empire chose to bat first and quickly found themselves in trouble when they lost Jay Egan (2), Tarun Bheemireddy (0), Thomas Plater (0) and Tristen Everett (4) to be floundering at 4/21. They continued to regularly lose wickets.

At 8/65, it seemed as though it was going to be an early day before Jed Noonan blasted 54 runs off 44 balls. Noonan was the last batter dismissed for Empire, but he had taken them to a competitive total of 135 runs.

Josh Brown was the best of the Golf Club bowlers taking 4/28.

In reply, the start of Golf Club’s innings mirrored that of Empire. Golf Club were struggling at 4/19 after losing Alex Fraser (4), Josh Brown (1), Jake Harbison (6) and Craig Youd (5). Mark Fraser and Jason Hampel came together at the crease and combined for a 81 run partnership before Fraser was dismissed for 42 runs and Hampel for 48. Golf Club still needed 22 runs to win. At 8/115, Peter Robinson (16no) and Ben Griffiths (8no) scored the required runs for Golf Club’s victory.

A small contingent of five bowlers braved inclement weather on Sunday for social bowls at the Golfie.

Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey played double lead for two sides and, with David Schofield and Karen Daly, they opened play with a +4 end.

Eight Yabbies finish on the podium The prizes were shared around with eight of the 11 Yabbies competing at the Cobar Men’s Swimming Club’s swim last Tuesday finishing up on the podium.

Scott Toomey won the 30m handicapped freestyle event after finishing within 0.06 seconds of his nominated time.

Close behind was Chris Powell with 0.09 seconds off his nominated time while Murray Harland swam into third place with 0.50.

Thomas Jones edged out the rest of the field to win the 50m event with a time of 0.13 off his

nominated time. Second was John Claus (0.28) while Harland was again third on 0.91.

Harland picked up the pace in the 100m event coming in first with 0.32 seconds off his time.

Toomey swam into second place with 0.44 and Peter Christen placed third on 0.84.

Christen teamed up with Lucas Hardy to blitz the Brace Relay event finishing within 0.46 seconds of their time to claim the win.

Powell and Toomey were second with 2.16 and Jones and Paul Swainston finished third on 3.81.

Nyngan golfer wins Sandgreens

The NSW Sandgreen Championships men’s golf event was held at Nyngan over the weekend and rain on Saturday night and then again during the second round on Sunday did not deter the local favourite, David Rose, from winning.

Rose used all of his local knowledge to defeat Mark Hale of Mudgee by two shots over the 36 hole event.

Other winners were Brad Webster from Nyngan (36 hole handicap event) and Paul Besgrove from Dunedoo picked up the Vets Scratch title. Mark Beetson, representing Nyngan, won the Vets handicap event and Warren golfer Joe Walker won the Junior title. The teams event was won by the Nyngan trio of Beetson, Greg Matherson and Tim Lewis. The only Cobar player to bring home a trophy was Peter ‘China’ Brien. He won the raffle.

Golf in Cobar over the past week started with a Stableford competition last Wednesday with Corin AhSee the winner on 36 stableford points. Colin ‘Butch’ Eves (34) was second and Max Phillips, with 32 stableford points, finished third on a countback.

Eight players took part in the Stableford competition on Saturday and Peter Lawrence continued his good form to win the event with 37 stableford points.

John Potter made a rare appearance on the golf course picking up second place with 36 stableford points and Bill Fugar snuck into third place with 35 stableford points decided on a countback.

Sunday’s competition was washed out.

Weather permitting, the Men’s Golf program for the coming week will be a individual Stableford today, and the Bushies v Townies will tee off on Saturday morning. (It’s believed Townies’ captain Mick Banister is still working on his game plan.)

Sunday’s Individual Stableford will be played in conjunction with the Medal of Medals playoff between Mark Fraser, Mark Martin, Will Brown, Peter Robinson, Jason Foster, Alec Fraser and Bill Fugar.—Three Aces

Season wraps up Tilpa win a close Twenty20 match The end of the Cobar Lady Golfers 2021 season is drawing to a close with only three games left on the calendar.

Today’s match looks in doubt if the predicted rain shows up but with luck the course may dry out sufficiently for the weekend’s competitions.

A Stableford game is scheduled for today and Saturday with a par three Stroke game on Sunday to end the season.

Fay Hardwick came in with an even card to finish on top in the mid week par event last Wednesday.

The runner-up was Sally Bannister on a countback from Geraldine Francisco after each posted -3.

Nearest the Pin prizes on the 3rd hole were awarded to Fay Hardwick and Daphne Cross.

The Learners Day four person Ambrose on Saturday was a close finish.

The rules of the day were a learner in each team (who on many occasion showed up a few A Graders!) were required to have three drives each.

The winning team, Glenda Peebles, Sally Bannister, Narelle Kriz and new comer, Michelle Deppeler, scored 61 1/4 net just ahead of Pat Polack, Jannine Wilkin, Geraldine Francisco and new starter Tena Blignaut on 62 1/4 net.

The Nearest the Pin competition on the 8th hole proved to be a bit tricky with only the A Graders staying on the fairway. Narelle Kriz was the closest to the flag.

It’s hoped the new ladies will join in the 2022 competition and, with the definite potential they showed on Saturday, they could well be in the top grade very quickly.

Although the rain held off for Saturday’s game, the inch of rain on Sunday however put a stop to any golf that day.

The Lady golfers held their Christmas party and presentation night on Friday at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club with a wonderful meal prepared by the club’s manager Luke Anderson, along with his mum and helpers, and the night was a huge success.—T’d Off

The Twenty20 cricket competition commenced on Friday night with Tilpa defeating Hombres by eight runs.

Batting first, Tilpa made 6/120 from their 20 overs. Tilpa got off to a poor start, losing Tony Polack for a golden duck and Tarun Bheemireddy for a duck.

Josh Brown (44 runs) and Rhys Lloyd (22 runs) steadied Tilpa’s innings and, after another mini collapse, Thomas Plater finished the innings off scoring 15 not out.

Graham Harbison was the best of the bowlers for Hombres taking 2/19 off two overs.

A good bowling display from Tilpa held Hombres to 4/112 off their 20 overs.

The run out of Jay Egan by Josh Brown when Egan was on 46 runs turned the match back into Tilpa’s favour.

Needing 22 runs off the last 13 balls, Roger Mitchell (13 not out) and Ben McBride (8no) could only manage 14 runs. Rhys Lloyd returned the best figures of 1/4 off two overs.

Bluebottles dominate the competition The Bluebottles team finished with two wins from their two games in the Cobar Junior Touch Football competition’s double header of games night last Thursday.

Their two wins shot them way up to the top of the competition ladder in the Juniors division. Bluebottles currently have 10 points with Red Devils in second place on five points, with Bumblebees a point back in third spot with four points while the Orange Blazers have one point.

The competition ladder in the Seniors division is a bit closer with Blue Kingspan just out in front with six points followed by Green Geckos and Blue Warriors (Red) both on five points and Warringahs are still in the hunt on four points.

In last week’s games the Bluebottles were pushed in both games and finished with two narrow wins, 6-4 over Red Devils and 7-5 over Bumblebees.

In other Juniors games Bumblebees narrowly beat Orange Blazers 3-1 while the match between Red Devils and Orange Blazers finished in a 4-all draw.

In the Seniors division, Green Geckos dominated the night with two big wins, 11-1 over Blue Kingspan and 10-4 over Yellow Warringahs.

In other matches Blue Warriors (Red) also had two wins.

They beat Blue Kingspan 6-1 and also got the better of the Yellow Warringahs with a 5-3 victory.

Cobar Senior Rugby League’s 2021 season was officially wrapped up on Saturday night (and well into the hours of Sunday morning) with the club’s presentations at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The night was a chance to celebrate and recognise the club’s best of the season in what has been one of its most challenging years to date.

The club’s perpetual award winners this season were: League Tag player Brennah Aumua who was the club’s Highest Try Scorer of the season while First Grade’s goal kicker, David Watson finished the 2021 season with the Most Points.

Under 18s (and First Grade fill in) Benjamin Griffiths collected the Daryl Bannister Memorial Trophy as the Rookie of the Year; Under 18’s Jarrod Hilton was named the Player with the Most Potential; and League Tag’s Neve Carter was named the Most Improved Footballer of the season.

First Grade fullback Ashley Davies collected the Norm Armstrong Most Consistent Back award while Thomas Plater was named the club’s Most Consistent Footballer.

Plater also earned the Eric Martin Club Best and Fairest Award.

Ebony Aumua was presented with the Rob Gilligan Junior Clubman of the Year trophy for her dedication to the sport while the Clubman of the Year award was shared by the executive committee.

The First Grade team awards went to: Nathan McAndrew (Coach’s Award); Gerald Mackey (Best Forward, Most Consistent Forward and Mackey also shared the Barry Fox Most Dedicated Player with League Tag’s Kayla Hasson); Ashley Davies (Best Back); and Thomas Plater (Best and Fairest and Players’ Player).

League Tag’s team awards went to: Neve Carter (Coach’s Award); Tyler Chiswick (Most Dedicated); Brennah Aumua (Most Consistent Player). Their Best & Fairest award was shared by Kayla Hasson and Brianna Watson and the Players’ Player award was shared by Tyler Chiswick, Zoë Egan and Brianna Watson.

The Under 18s team awards were won by: Kai Greenwood (Coach’s Award); Edwin Smith (Best Forward); Zane Taylor (Best Back); Benjamin Griffiths (Best and Fairest); and Seb Best (Players’ Player).
