Adding a bit of cheer this Christmas

Cobar Weekly’s 2020 Christmas Cheer competition, sponsored by Peak Gold Mines and Cobar Powerhouse, was expertly judged by the Cobar Girl Guides, Lilliane Brady Village residents and Cobar Weekly staff with five winners selected. Robyn collected $500 worth of Cobar Quids. While many parts of eastern Australia were hammered by heavy falls of rain causing flash flooding this past week, Cobar has been lucky to record steady rain with more than 16mm falling over the past few days.

In town, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 0.4mm in their rain gauge on Friday, 0.6mm on Sunday, 1.2mm to 9am Monday and by 9am yesterday there was another 14mm in the gauge bringing the total for the week to 16.2mm.

Some parts of the shire fared better with 26mm recorded at Carline north of Cobar, 21mm fell at Florida (Canbelego area), 20mm was recorded at Louth, the Evans’ had 15.4mm at Tambua, the Sinclairs to the south had 11mm, (while the Maxwells near Euabalong only had 6.4mm) and in the Nymagee area the Moselys recorded 10mm.

The welcome rain also brought some cooler weather with Monday’s top temperature only making it to 19.3 degrees, well below the average for this time of the year of 31.6 degrees. Most days last week were below average with 31 recorded on Friday, 31.9 on Saturday and 27 on Sunday.

It looks like the rain is gone with today expected to be mostly sunny with a predicted top of 27. The warm weather continues tomorrow with 30 the expected top while Christmas day will also be sunny with light winds and a top of 33. Boxing Day will be warmer again with 35 predicted.

A special Christmas delivery

Visitors are not permitted at LBV

The Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) aged care facility has this week been shut down to visitors in response to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases being reported in NSW. The Australian Government Department of Health issued a directive on Monday to all NSW residential aged care facilities that they were to exclude visitors until further notice.

Visits, unless they are essential for medical or personal care issues, are currently suspended.

This may mean that family members may not be able to visit their loved ones, or take LBV residents out for a few hours, on Christmas day.

Maree Wheeler, assistant director of nursing at the LBV, said while the restrictions are to be reviewed on Wednesday night, she does not expect it will change.

“We’re now doing what Sydney has been doing for a while,” Mrs Wheeler told The Cobar Weekly.

“Up until now our isolation has really been of benefit to us. I feel sorry for those who have made plans for Christmas,” she said.

“It will be very sad for residents as a lot of families do come home at Christmas to visit their parents.”

Mrs Wheeler said the lockdown precautions are for the benefit of the residents who are among the high risk group in our community.

She said the tightened restrictions will put additional stress on staff who are all working hard to keep everyone safe.

As per the Department of Health directive all staff (and exempted visitors) now must wear a surgical mask while in the facility.

“We’re doing our best, we hope people will understand and won’t be too hard on us,” she said.

Mrs Wheeler said in lieu of not visiting their relatives, families may like to phone or make a Skype call at Christmas.

She said a Skype call can be organised if family members contact the LBV prior to Christmas day to arrange it.

Mrs Wheeler said where there are exceptional circumstances (for example, a dying relative), visitors may be granted access.

Our local seniors may have missed out on the annual Cobar Shire Council Seniors Christmas party due to lingering COVID restrictions but they weren’t forgotten.

Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko and his staff, with the help of the local Girl Guides, delivered more than 160 Christmas hamper boxes (and some Christmas cheer) to our local senior citizens in their home last Thursday. They are pictured delivering to Brennan Centre residents Sue Duffy, Ruth Bradshaw and Faye Moore.

The Cobar Weekly staff farewell a long term employee

A few years ago Tahnee decided to move over to the “other side of the business” and became our Advertising Manager, which gave her the opportunity to use her creative ability.

She also wears a few other hats—she’s our IT Manager, co-ordinates our social media and is responsible for the printing side of the business.

During her time with The Weekly, Tahnee has been responsible for a number of innovations, including designing our website, setting up our Facebook Page, creating online subscriptions, upgrading our computers and is she has been the creative talent behind a number of our gorgeous features, competitions and themed window displays.

Tahnee said it wasn’t an easy decision to resign from The Weekly but she felt it was time for a change.

“It has been a pleasure to be part of such a wonderful community organisation that makes a real difference in Cobar,” Tahnee said.

Managing editor Sharon Harland said Tahnee will be missed.

“Over the years Tahnee has made a considerable contribution to The Weekly and much of the paper’s ongoing success can be attributed to her efforts and dedication to the role.

I am pleased and proud to advise that the Council delivered 200 hampers with the help of Santa and the Cobar Girl Guides last week to the senior citizens of Cobar Shire which includes properties around Nymagee, Euabalong, and Canbelego.

These hampers were warmly welcomed by the residents in lieu of their annual Council Seniors Christmas Party.

Council staff also hosted a Christmas morning tea for the residents of the Lilliane Brady Village last Wednesday.

A big well done to the Cobar community for their wonderful support and understanding during this COVID period that we all had to endure.

On behalf of your Council, I would like to wish the community of Cobar a very Merry Christmas and all the best for a better 2021.

Ambassador is an advocate for change in rural Australia Cobar’s 2021 Australia Day ambassador, Shanna Whan, is a passionate ambassador for health and change in rural Australia.

A professional speaker, CEO and founder of Sober In The Country (SITC), she regularly features on radio, television and the stage right across the country.

Ms Whan is just as comfortable speaking in a community hall or a dusty paddock, wherever she is needed to share the message, she will go.

Since 2015, Ms Whan has become a national personality pioneering unprecedented social impact around alcohol awareness, education and change in rural and remote Australia.

She advocates and fights for those who ‘stick their hand up’ and acknowledge they need a hand overcoming addiction, particularly those in geographical isolation or those who cannot get help or ongoing support in a timely manner.

Ms Whan said there are also a lot of stigmas that still abound in rural communities.

“As a recovered “invisible” alcoholic who had to rebuild her own life from Ground Zero at the age of 40, I have dedicated 15,000 volunteer hours to using front-line lived experience to start a conversation that’s since become a national charity,” she said.

Ms Whan believes an entire demographic of hard working, rural men and women have been overlooked and she’s taken up the challenge to fight for change and support in this sector.

Ms Whan was a finalist for the AgriFutures Rural Woman of the Year in 2017 and also a finalist in the 2018 SHINE Volunteer of the Year awards. Last year she was a NSW Rex Airlines Regional Woman of the Year finalist and is a nominee for the Australian of the Year (2021) - Local Hero award.

Christmas message from Police A state wide traffic operation, Operation Christmas/New Year, will commence tomorrow and you can expect to see plenty of police out on the roads ensuring motorists arrive safely at their desired destination.

Central North District Police Inspector Trent Swinton said during this period all police will be conducting random breath and random drug testing and Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will also be conducting speed enforcement duties – double demerit points will apply during this period.

“Before operating a motor vehicle or motor cycle please ensure you are in a fit state to do so; be well rested and free from the effects of drugs and/or alcohol,” Inspector Swinton said.

“If undertaking long distance travel please plan to stop every two hours to reduce the impact of fatigue or if you at anytime whilst travelling and you are tired, please pull over immediately and have a break.

“Also please ensure you drive to the conditions - weather forecasts indicate it could be a wet holiday period - please take it easy in the wet and if it happens to flood - do not drive through flood water!

“If you are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy a holiday away from your normal residence it is important that your house is left fully locked and secured. Lock all windows, doors, garden sheds, gates and garages.

“Please stay safe during the festive period.”

Preschool grants

Louth Preschool is one of 23 Preschools and day care centres across the Barwon electorate to benefit from a recent round of State Government funding.

Louth Preschool has been allocated $15,000 from the more than $11 million Quality Learning Environments (QLE) grants program.

The program provides not-for-profit community and mobile preschools and not-forprofit long day care services across the state with funding to purchase resources and activities which improve physical or educational learning environments.

Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway said the QLE grants are greatly welcomed in the community, especially after a tough year with drought, fire and COVID-19 for early childhood services.

“The grants will fund improvements to physical spaces by enhancing the quality of the grounds and buildings of services,” Mr Farraway said.

“They can also be used to provide specialised educational programs for children to address identified educational needs.”

Louth Preschool will put their funding towards the construction of a new outdoor play space and storage area.

Presentation day Cobar High School held their annual end of year presentation day last week at the school.

Brooklynn Mackay was named as 2020 DUX of the school and was also recognised for Outstanding Academic Achievement as First in Year 12.

Among the other end of year award winners were: Connor McMullen—Best All Rounder in Senior School, ADF Long Tan Award and the Bruce Mitchell Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship; Hannah Carroll—University of Newcastle Academic Excellence and Bill & Chattie Prisk Memorial Award for Most Outstanding Sportsperson in 2020; Mitchell Chaplain—Bill Venner Memorial Award for History and Outstanding Academic Achievement First in Year 11; Braydee Mackay— CHS Ex Student Award for Achievement and Outstanding Academic Achievement First in Year 10; Sophie Clark—Best All Rounder in Junior School and Outstanding Academic Achievement First in Year 9; and Riley Bottom—SRC Contribution & Efforts and Kath Miles Cooperation & Services.

Interest & Participation in Several Sports Award winners were Luke Giurin and Sarah Morley, while the Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship went to Neve Carter.

• Emergency services were called around mid- families (with 35 children). We are lucky to

• Cobar Public School has farewelled a few staff members this year including: Sandy Baker who is retiring (after teaching at CPS for 26 years) along with Luke Coombes, Jen Hamilton, Britt Martin, Rachel Gentles and Montana Daniel. St John’s School have this year said goodbye to Julia Maclay and Cobar High School is also losing a few staff members with Helen Spencer, Sue Donaldson and Zac Finn all moving on this year.

We hope they have all enjoyed their time in Cobar.

• This year’s Junior Touch competition has been hailed a great success and with all the positive feedback from players, parents and spectators, it is hoped junior touch football is here to stay in Cobar!

• With more new cases of COVID-19, Cobar Hospital’s visiting policy has been tightened up again and is as strict as it was during lockdown earlier this year. Only one visitor per patient is permitted and no visitors under 18 are permitted into the hospital. Also only one parent is permitted to attend if a child needs to visit as an outpatient and that parent is also requested not to bring any additional children.

• Good on Ya to the Cobar Shire Library staff.

CatholicCare Housing Support Worker Alanna Josephson reports the Library staff have once again done a great job organizing their Christmas Tree appeal. This year it helped out 16

have such a generous and caring community.

• Cobar Police have happily reported that it’s been a very good December so far crime wise. And to keep the statistics low, Police will be increasing their drink and drug driving testing over the festive season.

• Have you been out for a Christmas Lights drive yet? There’s some great displays. Along with our Christmas Cheer competition winners in Gould Street, Beersheba Court (off Singleton Drive), Bradley Street, Bathurst Street and Nyngan Road, there’s also other displays in Fletcher Street, Mopone Street and a few businesses in Marshall Street are looking festive and bright.

• It’s been a tough week for us here at The Weekly having to say goodbye to Tahnee Tomek (after almost 14 years). Tahnee can pretty much do anything and knows pretty much everything, so she will be very much missed. She has however offered to continue help out as we transition into “life without her” and she’s also keen to join the Cobar Weekly Association as a committee member, which is fantastic news!

• We’ve been lucky to have the help of a few uni students, Abbey Geyer (for five months) and Abby Carswell and Gabbi Lennon this past week, along with a past employee, Bella Coughlan (who gave us a few hours of her time last week to help create our Christmas Greetings feature). Abby’s also going to be doing a few more weeks work during her holiday break on our digital archiving project. We thank them all for the contributions they have made to The Weekly.

A mixed bag of results for Yabbies It was a mixed bag of results from the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club weekly swim last Tuesday.

Rhys Lloyd was first to receive a winner’s Yabbies stubby holder with a win in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim.

Lloyd finished within 0.06 seconds of his nominated time ahead of John Claus (0.09) and Scott Toomey was third on 0.22.

It was a tie for first place in the 50m event with Chris Powell and Murray Harland both finishing within 0.06 seconds of their nominated times.

Back in third place was Bill Fugar with 0.09.

John Carswell with 0.37 seconds off his time, narrowly pipped Fugar (0.38) to win the 100m swim.

Toomey finished in third place with 0.44.

Carswell teamed up with Paul Swainston to win the Brace Relay dolphin dive across the pool event with a time of 0.44 seconds off their time.

Cameron van Breugel and Aaron Finn were second on 0.47 and Harland and Fugar, with 0.59, finished third.

Nymagee claim Paula’s trophy

Nymagee claimed the Paula Potter Cup cricket trophy after a two wicket win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Tottenham finished with 9/124 from their 20 overs while Nymagee chased them down to finish with 8/127 in 19.3 overs.

Matt Bolam was named Man of the Match finishing with fantastic bowling figures of 3/5.

Chad Buckman also bowled well for Nymagee finishing with 2/17.

Mitch Holt (30 not out), Phil Harley (30) and Jade Buckman (22 not out) top scored for Nymagee to help them to their win.

Kai was rewarded with the Player of the Grand Final title for his efforts in both attack and defence, along with his sportsmanship.

The Blueys were elated with their win and in a show of great sportsmanship all players congratulated the Electric Eels on a fantastic game.

Megan Giurin was the Junior Girl top try scorer for the season and George McDonald was the leading boy try scorer for the Junior Boys with an incredible tally of 21 tries for the season.

Rowdy Barton collected the Junior Boys Best and Fairest trophy for his season-long sportsmanship and encouragement of younger players. Sosie Barton was a standout player and her quality skills in attack and defence and her ability to include all teammates on the field earned her the girls Best and Fairest award.—contributed

Damp weather made conditions very tricky for the brave dozen who turned out for Sunday bowls at the Golfie.

Don Roberts, Barry Bargwanna and Narelle Kriz were too strong for Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond, Geoff ‘Herbie’ Dunne and Karen ‘Kaz’ Daly.

Leading the entire game, they won by +11 and must have thought that they would be taking home the bacon (or ham on this occasion). Grand final games were both thrillers The Junior Touch grand finals were played in trying conditions on Thursday afternoon, however, the kids didn’t seem to notice the heat while playing.

Both games attracted a large amount of spectators to Ward Oval in what was reminiscent of Cobar’s touch football former glory days.

In the senior grand final game it was a confident Mighty Red Roosters who were victorious over the Green Machine.

First to score however was the Green Machine who started the game strongly and had

the Roosters on the back foot.

Both Jaxon Burke and Tahj Foley played exceptional games in attack, both breaking the line a number of times forcing the Roosters to play a scrambling defensive game.

It was the Roosters though, directed by Zac Broughton and Jayden Paul, who returned fire to put their side in front.

Aisha Schofield picked up a great corner try after some solid driving attack by the Roosters, and Oisin McMullen fooled everyone with a great dummy pass to cross the line and score.

A small lapse in concentration by the Roosters allowed the Green machine to edge closer with Kai Greenwood picking up a length of the field try but at fulltime it was an elated Mighty Red Rooster’s who were eventual winners 7-4.

Kai Greenwood was named Player of the Grand Final for his quality attacking skills and directional play.

Sarah Morley was the top try scorer this season for senior girls, while Tahj Foley scored 11 tries to finish as the senior boys top try scorer.

Each week Best and Fairest points are awarded by the referees.

Female Best and Fairest was young Maddie Bruce, who each week displayed a natural talent for touch football and a willingness to learn, while Ethan McLeod was awarded male Best and Fairest for the senior competition.

“Ethan was also a pleasure to referee each week and matched his older teammates in both skill and sportsmanship,” Coordinator Lisa Travis said.

The junior’s grand final game was a tightly contested and exciting match that saw the Blueys edge out the Electric Eels in sudden death extra time.

The teams couldn’t be split at full time drawing 6-all.

Nate Martin dominated through the field for the Eels along with Drew Barton and Lila Armstrong and they were well supported in attack by Lara Stephens.

The Blueys were well served by playmakers Kai McCosker and Parker Cryer all game with Megan Giurin also strong in attack scoring a fantastic diving sideline try in the final stages of the game.

Zara Patterson and Billy George played their normal solid defensive games and Sosie Barton chased down a flying Piper Allen who was attempting a length of the field breakaway run.

With a tie at full time, the thrilling game went into a drop off with the match winner scored by Kai McCosker in double extra time.
