Miners memorial is now officially open From concept to completion, the Cobar Miners Memorial has been a dream of local resident, Barry Knight, for almost seven years.

The Cobar Miners Memorial finally became a reality on Saturday when Barry joined Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton and Cobar’s deputy mayor, Jarrod Marsden, to officially open the memorial, which has been built at a total cost of $970,000.

The memorial pays homage to those who have been killed in mining accidents in Cobar and those who have died from mining related illnesses.

For Barry, the project had been a personal legacy prompted by the loss of a good mate, Harry Marshall, who was killed in a mining accident at the CSA Mine in 1973 when he was just 20 years old.

Being a longtime Cobar resident, Barry said he and his family also have connections with a number of other names that appear in the memorial.

Mr Coulton praised Barry’s vision and commitment to build the memorial which he said will commemorate and safeguard Cobar’s mining history.

“The new memorial will be a drawcard for tourists, educating visitors to the area about past tragedies that have occurred within the mines,” Mr Coulton said.

Cr Marsden also praised the efforts of Barry, his committee, the community, and all levels of government in helping to build the Cobar Miners Memorial.

“The memorial is an amazing edition to Cobar and something that we can all be proud of,” Cr Marsden said.

Cobar’s Miners Memorial has been officially opened

A former Cobar resident Sandra Collins (nee Bailey) or ‘Super Sal’ as she was known when she worked as a mining engineer at the CSA Mine in the 1980s, was back in town for the Cobar Miners Memorial official opening on Saturday and is pictured above with Barry Knight. Sandra features in one of the information panels that make up the memorial having been the first female to work underground in Cobar (and NSW) after she challenged the NSW State Legislation in 1985 which previously did not permit women to work underground.

The NSW State Government contributed $396,000 to the build with the Federal Government also investing $349,000 and Cobar Shire Council and the local community contributed $225,000 to the project.

As part of the official opening celebrations, Colby Lawrence was invited to give a ‘Welcome to Country’ speech, Reverend Graham McLeod gave a spiritual blessing, museum curator Kay Stingemore ceremoniously rang the Miners Memorial bell, local musician Shane Josephson and the Cobar High School choir sang the national anthem (and also performed their original tribute songs to Cobar’s miners), Barry’s brother Jack Knight recited a poem he had written for the occasion, and the CSA Mine Rescue Unit and local ambulance and Fire & Rescue NSW staff formed a guard of honour as wreaths were laid by the community in honour of lost family members and workmates.

Barry was pleased to welcome back a number of former local residents, including Council staff member Angela Shepherd and Peak Gold Mine employee Chris Higgins who he said had both played major roles in the project.

He paid tribute to the valuable research carried out by museum curator Kay Stingemore and Cobar historian, the late Joy Prisk, and praised the support of local mining companies, council staff past and present, Cobar businesses, builder Heath Prendergast, all those who helped fundraise as well as his wife and family who have supported him throughout the whole project.

Community collective well received Council has been spending up big

The works of local artists Sarah Groat, Susan Singleton, Jessica Sinclair, Kylie Harvey and Liz Whiteman (pictured above) were on show at the Cobar Railway Station over the weekend. The recent completion of the Cobar Miners Memorial, a $970,000 project, is just one of 52 major projects Cobar Shire Council has been working on over the past 18 months.

Council released a list this week (see Page 9) of all their recent projects funded through Federal and State Government grants with the list totalling almost $67 million.

To date, Council has completed 20 projects worth $10,470,000 which include the Cobar Miners Memorial; Stage 1 of the water reticulation upgrade ($5.4m) with Stage 2 worth $3m currently out for tender; $1.5m has been spent on works to repair flood damaged roads; the Dalton Park Horse Complex new toilets cost $553,000 and $420,000 was spent on LED street lights upgrade.

A further $4.925m worth of works are nearing completion and include: $2.4m to upgrade the Great Cobar Heritage Centre; $750,000 for the construction of new footpaths; and $700,000 for a new truck wash facility.

The sealing of the Grand Hotel and Cobar Cinema carparks (worth $240,000) is one of four projects totalling over $1m that are expected to be completed by next week.

Council has a further 11 projects in various stages of progress which include the $15.5m Water Filtration Plant/water storage pump station; $1.7m on the sewerage pump station upgrade; $5.5m on upgrades to the Council administration building; and $1.5m to re-roof the town water tank.

A further $19m worth of projects are in the design phase and another $3.2m are currently at the tender stage.

High School’s high achievers

Telstra 5G service is now in Cobar

Telstra 5G coverage is now available in Cobar, with Telstra recently switching on 5G services as part of a national rollout of the next generation of mobile technology.

Regional General Manager for Telstra, Northern NSW, Michael Marom said the Telstra 5G connectivity in Cobar means customers with 5G mobile devices can enjoy a better mobile experience.

“There are more than one million 5G devices already connected to the Telstra network and thousands more 5G devices being added every week,” Mr Marom said.

“We’re continually expanding our 5G network across NSW and we’re adding up to 60 new Telstra 5G sites to the network every week across the country.

“Telstra has been leading the way in pioneering 5G technology and making 5G technology available to regional customers.”

He said the latest Telstra 5G roll out to Cobar and Forbes demonstrates Telstra’s commitment to regional Australia as they expand their 5G network across the country.

Mr Marom said the recent 5G network upgrade will also deliver improved 4G capacity and speeds.

There are now more than 3,100 Telstra 5G sites on-air in more than 160 cities and towns and 5G coverage available in more than 2,450 suburbs across the country.

More than 60 per cent of Australia’s population now lives in Telstra’s 5G footprint and Telstra has made a commitment to roll out its 5G network to 75 per cent of the population by the end of June 2021.

Councillors need to be “visionary”

Gail heads up the best delivery team Gail Higgins is a familiar face in our community, particularly on Wednesday mornings when she’s out delivering The Cobar Weekly .

You may have spotted Gail, aka ‘The Boss’ nicknamed by her LiveBetter helpers, Myshelle Gillette, Leah Mitchell and Ashley McMurtrie, as they reckon on Wednesdays it’s Gail that “calls the shots!”.

The LiveBetter team have the job of deliver-

ing and selling Cobar’s ‘Little Paper’ each week around the CBD. LiveBetter is a not-for-profit organisation that offers a range of flexible support services to their clients in Cobar and across regional NSW. They help to promote independence while also assisting people with a disability to live their best lives and achieve their goals.

As well as helping The Cobar Weekly out, Gail’s role helps her to connect with lots of members of the community which helps to improve her confidence and communication skills. She’s also learning valuable life skills such as money handling and time management.

Gail has been working with LiveBetter for over 10 years and spends three days each week with her carers.

She said her favourite part about delivering the papers each week is “saying hello to people, going to all the shops, and then having morning tea”.

As well as local businesses in the CBD, Gail and the LiveBetter team also deliver papers each week to Cobar High School, the Lilliane Brady Village and the Golfie.

Dear editor, I advocate for independent, free-thinking, and visionary candidates interested in running for the next Cobar Shire Council elections in September and I hope that a new crop of councillors will make better decisions than those made in the past.

I believe the Council lost its way in past years in making important decisions in a number of areas including the swimming pool, truck wash and the Newey.

The Cobar Swimming Pool is an important facility within the community and making it a multipurpose facility should be prioritised by Council so that it could be better utilised.

For example, the swimming pool at Singleton (a mining centre like Cobar) services shift workers 12 months of the year simply because it is heated and contains hydrotherapy pools.

Cobar Shire Council received a grant to construct a truck wash and Council now has a brand-new truck wash within its workshop compound.

It is not however for the use of private operators as was the original intention of building a new truck wash.

Council will need to apply for another grant to build another truck wash to service the needs of this sector of the community.

There has been much debate over the Newey Reservoir being a designated caravan site for free campers. Free campers are currently using the rest stop at the entry to town, camping at the Old Reservoir and even parking at the old hospital block.

I believe a clear decision should be made that rate payers and residents be entitled to keep the Newey area for their own use and enjoyment.

(At the moment there are reportedly eight swans and two clutches of black ducks enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the Newey and I believe opening it up to free campers could jeopardise that.)

We need people who will make the best choices for Cobar’s future.

• NSW Police will be holding a Rural Crime Community Forum in Cobar tonight. It’s estimated that $22.5 million worth of sheep and cattle were stolen in NSW between 2015 and 2020. Taking into consideration the loss of stud stock and animal by-products, the financial impact on our primary producers could realistically be over $60m in NSW alone. Tonight’s forum aims to give local farmers information about how to deal with rural crime and some tips to help avoid being a victim.

Bactrians draw

The Cobar Bactrians women’s rugby team travelled to Coonamble to play the Coonamble ladies side on Saturday and their thriller of a game finished in a 3-all draw.

The ever improving Bactrians continued to build on their great attacking and defending skills which ensured that the more experienced home side wasn’t able to call all the shots in Saturday’s game.

The Bactrians’ Players’ Player, Nichola Heagney, scored two tries in the match with speedster Sally Schintler running in their third try.

The Cobar girls displayed great teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the whole game.

Best & Fairest points were earned by Ellie Munro (3), Heagney (2) and Schintler (1).

There was a good turnout of 16 bowlers at the Golfie for Sunday social bowls with four games of pairs played.

David Thomas and Bian Smith claimed a narrow win over Randall Hall and Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond by a margin of +3 while John Daly and Michael Sargent accounted for Karen Daly and visitor Scott Parkinson with a margin of +4.

Sargent and Parkinson also shared the coveted ‘George the Giraffe award’ with both delivering wrong biased bowls that nearly ended up over the road in the pool!

Dave Knight teamed up with Alec Fraser (who finally had something to smile about after the Broncos dismal effort this round) and they easily took care of their game against Barry Bargwanna and visitor Jim Brackenreg with a win of +11 to claim second prize.

However all the action was in the final game where Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey teamed up with David Schofield to claim the bragging rights over big brother Jim Goonrey and Doug Hudson with a massive win of +25.

In Singles Championships action this week, Kyle Roberts progressed to the next round after defeating Barry Bargwanna 31-19 on Saturday. Roberts then backed up on Sunday with his father Don to take on Daniel Holt and Dean McLeod in a Pairs game.

The game was tight early but a huge seven shots win on the 14th end to Holt/McLeod proved deadly and, despite a spirited comeback from the Roberts duo, they eventually fell short by five shots, going down 26-21.

Cobar players progress in pennants golf Once again last Wednesday’s Ladies Golf competition game didn’t go ahead due to showers in the morning.

The Pennants round against Warren did manage to get played on Thursday with Cobar victorious in all five matches.

The next round against Dubbo was to take place on Dubbo’s home turf (and grass greens) tomorrow but as an inch of rain is predicted, it’s now been postponed to next Thursday.

Fay Hardwick collected the June Trophy prize on Saturday scoring 35 stableford points for the win. Geraldine Francisco’s 31 points gave her second place, followed by Sally Bannister with 26 and Karen Manns on 22.

Sunday’s Par game was a win for Susan Goonrey who posted -1 with Barb Barklimore the runner-up on -3 and Daphne Cross came home in third place with -5.

The Western District Ladies Golf Association Sandgreen Teams tournament was held in Trangie on Sunday in conjunction with the Trangie Ladies Open. Cobar was represented by 11 golfers on the day.

Although short by one shot for a countback in the Sandgreens title, the day was won by Trangie on a countback from Yeoval (calculated on the best two scores out of three players nominated).

The Cobar Under 11s went down 34-6 in their game against Dubbo South with Aiden Hyland (a try) and Rowdy Barton (a conversion) their point scorers. Coach’s Awards went to Nash Webster and Ben Edge.

The Roosters Under 12s were beaten 26-0 by their Dubbo opponents with Coach’s Awards earned by Aiden Hyland and Nate ‘The tackling machine’ Martin.

Cobar’s Under 13s went down 50-26 in their high scoring game against Narromine. Tries came from Jaxon Burke, Ashton Dietrich, Tim Eves, Harry Cousins and Axel Fairfull with Tim Eves kicking two conversions. Coach’s Awards went to Axel Fairfull and Ashton Dietrich.

The Under 14s were defeated 62-12 with Tahj Foley responsible for all of Cobar’s points.

James Turner and Lachy Willard collected the Coach’s Awards.

Cobar’s Under 16s also lost their game 45-4 with Jayden Paul their solo try scorer. Jayden and Zac Broughton shared the Coach’s Awards.

The struggle is real Golfers are continuing to struggle to score well on the Cobar course.

Jason Foster came in with a net score of 71 in the 4th Round of the Captain’s Trophy Stroke event on Saturday which was good enough to win him the event. The runner-up was super vet Max Phillips on 72.

Garry Wilkin snuck in to third place after a countback from Peter Lawrence, when both finished on a score of 73 net.

Nearest to the Pin (NTP’s) prizes were won

by Phillips on the 7th hole, Stewart Fraser (8th) and Wilkin on the 15th hole.

Chris Powell must have attracted the attention of the handicapper after he finished with 42 stableford points in Sundays Stableford event. In second place was Greg Clark who improved remarkably from last place the previous day to finish with 35 stableford points on Sunday.

Garry Wilkin pipped out another old timer in a countback for third place after he and Bill Fugar both finished on 33 stableford points.

NTP’s were won by Powell on the 3rd hole, Wilkin (8th) and Clark on the 15th hole.

The Darling River Pro Am at Bourke was held on Sunday for the first time in three years. Roosters allowed to run riot

The Cobar Roosters ran riot on Saturday in Round 10 of the Christie & Hood Castlereagh Rugby League competition to easily win their match 72-10 over Trangie at Trangie.

Cobar’s “quicks” couldn’t be contained by the Trangie defenders with four players, Ash Davies, Nathan McAndrew, Tim Hillam and Jimmy Neyland, scoring two tries each in Saturday’s big win.

Tristan Everett, Gerald Mackay, Ben Simon and David Watson also crossed for tries for the Roosters.

The goal kicking duties were also shared around with Watson converting three, Jim Delboux (2) and Neyland and Jack Brown also kicked conversions.

Cobar hosts Baradine this Saturday in Round 11 at Tom Knight Memorial Oval with the day highlighting mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Only two out of three scheduled games were played in the local darts competition last Wednesday and both of those matches finished with 8-3 results.

Golfie Dartaholics won 8-3 over Golfie Gophers and Empire Barflies also finished as 8-3 winners over Golfie Spearchuckers.

In the other scheduled game, Western Renegades forfeited to RSL Diggers.

Hundreds and high scores from last week were thrown by: Golfie Dartaholics—Kylie Tiffen 120, 100, Jason Arnold 100, 100, Craig Jones 135, 140, Larissa Johnson 101, 122, 140 and John Wayne Josephson 100; Golfie Gophers—Chris Hooker 100, 100 and Les Hooker 101, 121; Empire Barflies—Rodney Coleman 100, Paige Coleman 120 and Jason Holmgreen 105.

Larissa Johnson had the ladies’ highest score of the week (140) and also the highest peg out (122).

Craig Jones, also with 140, had the highest men’s score of the week while the highest peg out for the men was 69, recorded by Daniel Duell.

In their Round 10 game, Pumpettes finished as five point winners over JKM, 48-43, which helped them climb to the top of the A Grade ladder. They however had to share the points in their Round 9 game with Divas (which was pre -played on Thursday) after that match ended in an exciting 32-all draw.

Real Steel, who have been the best performers in B Grade this season, had to fight hard for their Round 9 win over Sharpe Shooters and, while they did have the lead throughout the entire match, Sharpe Shooters fought back in the second half and came to within just two points in the late stages of the game.

Real Steel held out to eventually claim a 4136 win.

Real Steel had an easier game in Round 10 up against Golfie Mystics winners 53-24.

In the other matches played on Saturday, in A Grade JKM ran out as big 60-29 winners over Hot Shots (who were short on players) while in B Grade, Golfie Mystics beat Gumnuts 35-18 in Round 9 and in Round 10 Sharpe Shooters had a 44-5 win over Gumnuts.
