Mrs Harland said it’s a bit like when colour television was introduced into Australia on March 1 1975, or as they were calling it back then, ‘C-day’.

“We’ve done some “test transmissions” to get used to working with full colour and we think we just about have things ready to go.

“Unlike on C-day 1975 when viewers needed to fork out around $1,000 (which is equivalent to $5,500 in today’s prices) for a colour TV, The Cobar Weekly customers will only see a slight price rise in the cover cost from $1 to $2.

Ward Oval upgrades still on track to be finished early 2024 There’s been plenty happening at Cobar Shire Council’s two construction sites at Ward Oval over the past few months.

The Cobar Weekly was invited for a walkthrough of the new Early Learning Centre (ELC) and multipurpose hall construction sites last week with the contractor, David Payne Construction’s project manager Harry Denham, supplying an update on the works.

Mr Denham said the project was slightly behind schedule but that’s not unusual for a project of its scale and location. He said it’s still on track to be completed early next year.

He said the project was delayed due to the erection of the framework on the ELC taking longer than estimated.

The new multipurpose hall (which contains a kitchen, bar, an indoor open dining area, a stage, a designated office space, male and female toilet and changeroom amenities as well as undercover outdoor spaces) is being built concurrently with the ELC. Work on the hall was previously about a week or two behind the ELC however with its hold up, the David Payne Construction team has pivoted and moved their focus to completing the hall first.

“We’ve reversed the plan,” Mr Denham said.

Work commenced on the hall’s roof last week with the window sub frames planned to be installed in December.

Drought funding

NSW Farmers has applauded the Minns Government’s new $250 million Drought Ready and Resilient Fund (DRRF) designed to assist farmers prepare and respond to drought conditions.

NSW Farmers’ president, Xavier Martin said the clarity the government has provided early in the drying cycle will help farmers with making their business decisions.

Through the DRRF, eligible primary producers can apply for a low interest, fixed term loan of up to $250,000 which can be repaid over a period of five or 10 years.

The loan can be used to fund a broad range of products, activities and services, including: the purchase and transportation of fodder and water; livestock feeding equipment; veterinary and animal welfare professional services; genetic banking; fencing and containment pens; shade structures; planting of trees; farm income diversification projects; pest and weed control; solar power conversion; soil conservation and earthworks; training and development; infrastructure repairs and maintenance; and the purchase and installation of new onfarm infrastructure.

“These loans, announced before the drought hits hard, help farmers to make proactive decisions,” Mr Martin said.

“Farmers are always subject to climate variability, and having faced significant drought and disaster impacts in recent years, know that having a plan and some certainty as to how best to prepare for adverse conditions is critical.”

Premier Chris Minns said the fund was a “commonsense initiative that allows farmers to get ahead of the dry season and protect their livelihoods”.

Macquarie Home Stay facility

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW is to be recognised in a very special way for its long-term support of Dubbo’s Macquarie Home Stay (MHS).

The MHS purpose-built accommodation facility for people accessing medical services in Dubbo, last week announced it would be naming its new accommodation expansion, the ‘CWA of NSW Guesthouse’.

The CWA of NSW’s association with MHS first began in 2015 when the Dubbo branch sold its CWA Rooms in Wingewarra Street, with part of the proceeds donated to Macquarie Home Stay.

The association has also agreed to donate an additional $120,000 in order to sponsor a whole pod of rooms.

Rod Crowfoot, MHS Managing Director, said CWA of NSW members across the state advocated for vibrant and resilient rural and regional communities, and were big supporters of the role Macquarie Home Stay played in helping their communities.

“The CWA of NSW and their many branches are highly respected and make positive change in our communities.

“The board of MHS wanted to acknowledge the support the association has provided over the years, and believed the naming rights to this important expansion recognise the valuable role the association has played in not only supporting us, but also supporting the communities from where our patients and their loved ones travel to stay with us,” Mr Crowfoot said.

More unsettled weather expected

We’ve had a week of unsettled weather with thunderstorms threatening most afternoons, but the only rain recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology last week was 2.4mm after Thursday night’s storm.

The Bureau is predicting more unsettled weather for the week ahead with showers and possible storms expected every day up until next Monday.

This week there’s a good chance we’ll get some decent rain, with up to 20mm expected to fall tomorrow and also on Thursday.

Today is expected to reach a top of 32 before a late thunderstorm brings in a cooler change with 26 degrees the predicted top temperature for tomorrow and also on Friday.

It will warm up a bit on Saturday to 29 degrees and 28 is the expected maximum for Sunday.

The Bureau predicts Monday will be partly cloudy and the mercury should reach a top of 30.

Sunday was our hottest day last week when it reached a maximum of 35.2 degrees (which is 5.6 degrees warmer than the average for this time of the year).

Every other day (apart from Friday) were all above average with 33.6 recorded on Wednesday, 31.8 on Thursday, 33.2 on Saturday and 30.1 on Monday.

Friday was our coolest day of the week (at 28.8) and closest to our average of 29.6 degrees.

Our nights have gradually started to warm up and, on most nights last week, the mercury hovered around 17 degrees, which is close to the average of 16 degrees for this time of the year.

The Bureau is predicting similar overnight temperatures again this week.

Mayor looks to future of region

Mayor Jarrod Marsden attended the annual Orana Outlook Forum last week in Dubbo which provided an insight into the future of the region, and looked at the challenges and opportunities for the year ahead.

This year’s forum had a focus on innovations and how they will impact the future of the region.

“The forum was very well represented by both government and private sector representatives.

“There were speakers on a host of very relevant major topics including roads and transport, housing, agriculture, tourism and others,” Cr Marsden said.

He said of particular interest were discussions in the area of housing, transport and tourism.

“Housing – the average rent in the region is now $570 a week!” Cr Marsden said.

“Affordable housing and more duplex/unit type housing is required as many three and four bedroom homes are being taken up by singles or couples with no children.

“Over 700 “Airbnb” type houses are also taking away houses from the rental market.

“Affordable housing isn’t public housing, it’s based on a percentage of average income, and anything over 30 per cent is considered unaffordable. We are sitting at 29 per cent so we are very close to crossing a bad line.

“Transport – at the moment there are 2.3 million sea container movements by road from the Newcastle port out into the Orana region annually. This is predicted to increase to seven million in the coming years.

“Road funding increases, more places for trucks to pull off the road overnight (especially oversize heavy haulage), and 38 new overtaking lanes for the region are being planned,” Cr Marsden reported.

“Tourism numbers continue to climb and are predicted to increase another 66 per cent in the next five years.

“There are some trends which I believe everyone in the Cobar Shire Council should take into consideration, including a big shift away from single day event travel with the average stay now 3.2 nights.

“We see this with events like the Mundi Mundi Bash with travellers going out into the region and then home again over a 7-10 day period.

“There is also a jump in people travelling just to see friends and relatives, with family and group re-unions very popular at the moment,” he said.

A new Australian citizen

Cobar Shire Council Mayor Jarrod Marsden last week officially conducted his first naturalisation ceremony to welcome local businessman Nay Linn as a new Australian citizen. Nay is originally from Burma and came to Cobar in 2014. He and wife Nandar (Amm) own the Cobar Thai restaurant which Amm established in 2011.

The pair were married in Myanmar in 2016 and have since welcomed two little Aussies, Nestor (who was born in 2017) and Noah in 2021, also pictured above.

Swimmers dive head first into 2023 carnival season A team of 12 swimmers from Cobar Swimming Club competed at the Macquarie Yabbies Swimming Carnival in Narromine on Sunday.

Henry Knight was the Cobar club’s shining star finishing with four first places, two seconds, three thirds and he also claimed a first place in the medley relay at the end of the day with Cobar team mates Harry Cousins and Nick Hodges (along with William Letham from Mudgee Indoor Swimming Club).

Other results from the day included: Clair Cousins—2nd in 50m backstroke and 3rd in 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke; Ashley Cousins—2x 3rd places; Isabelle Gillette— 1x 3rd; Molly Fitzsimmons (the Cobar club’s youngest swimmer who was competing at her first away carnival)—2nd in 25m backstroke; and Harry Cousins—2nd in 200m backstroke and 3rd in 100m backstroke (proving his training in backstroke is paying off).

Also attending was Thomas Knight (at his first inter-town carnival), who finished with some great personal best (PB) times and joined in the medley relay to help the club form a team.

Games played in Cobar’s cricketing woes continue damp conditions Round 6 of the Junior Touch competition was played in damp conditions at Ward Oval last Thursday.

In the 13-16 years games, which copped most of the rain, the Mighty Minions and Blue Bugs couldn’t be split and finished in a 4-all draw.

Blue Bugs had a narrow 2-1 lead at half time thanks to tries from Clay McDonald and George McDonald and both also touched down for another try each in the second half.

Ashton Dietrich put first points on the board for the Mighty Minions with Ashley Cousins and Josh Francisco their second half scorers and with Ashley’s try worth double points, the match finished in a draw.

Brussel Sprouts just got the better of the Pink Panthers in the other 13-16 years game to win 7-5.

The two sides were even at half time (2-all) thanks to first half tries to Maddie Bruce (Brussel Sprouts) and Sosie Barton (Pink Panthers).

Both sides scored three more tries each in the second half but with two of them scored

by Brussel Sprouts’ female players, Holly Watt and another to Maddie Bruce, that gave them a two points advantage in the final score.

Kai McCosker also added to Brussel Sprouts’ final tally of seven points with his second half try.

In Round 6 of the 9-12 years game between Redbacks and Blue Powerades, Redbacks finished as big 13-5 winners.

Sunday’s scheduled event was changed to a Captain’s Round Stroke event to catch up on a couple of events washed out earlier this year.

Brad Bannister was a stand out with a total of 67 net and he could be sporting a new handicap this week.

In last week’s Individual Stableford held on Wednesday, Brien Obray played a solid round of golf to defeat the other six players in the field coming in on 36 points.

In second place was Peter ‘China’ Brien on 33 stableford points and Ray Yench, on 32 stableford points, picked up third place.

Same same but different Yabbies

The results from the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club competition last Tuesday night were the same same but different.

The same names, Bill Fugar, Ben Plush and Paul Swainston, kept coming up in the results but in different podium places.

Fugar won the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event with a time of 0.03 seconds off his nominated time.

Plush was second (0.04) and Josh Mainey (for a bit of variety) was third with 0.09.

Swainston claimed first place in the 50m swim with 0.53 seconds off his time and just ahead of James Daymond (0.59) and Fugar (0.81) finished third.

Plush claimed a win of the 100m event with 1.03 seconds off his nominated time in front of Fugar (1.33) and Swainston (1.36).

Swainston and Mainey teamed up to win the Brace Relay dolphin dive across the pool, which they completed within 0.85 seconds of their nominated time.

Fugar and Plush were second (1.84) and Swainston also doubled up to claim third place with Dave Mexted (1.88).

Concrete Cowboys cement the top spot The gloves came off and the umbrellas went up when the Concrete Cowboys met the King Roosters in Round 6 of the Open Mixed Touch competition last Thursday night.

A thunderstorm that had been threatening for a few hours dumped a good deal of its rain on Thursday’s games, one of which was the match of the round between the two top sides, Concrete Cowboys and King Roosters.

The slippery conditions affected ball handling, decreased the number of try scoring opportunities and contributed to a number of errors in the match.

By half time the score was just 1-all with Ben Griffiths scoring for the Cowboys and Ted Smith crossing for King Roosters.

In the second half, Concrete Cowboys’ Neve Carter and Taylah Good scored a try each which ultimately helped the Cowboys to a 5-2 win.

With female tries worth double points, that made all the difference to the end result as King Roosters only added one more point to their tally with a try from Toby Greenwood.

With both teams having plenty of players who can score tries as well as very good defenders, the outcome may be a different result when the two sides meet in the semis.

CATS and Rusty Snails played a cautious game last week which finished in a 5-all draw.

Jayden Paul crossed twice for CATS, with Amanda Hyland and Damon Bruce scoring their other points. Kody Martin scored a double for Rusty Snails with Lisa Dormer and Ethan McLeod their other try scorers.
